Honestly, I wish they would scrap the whole “You need to take X trait line to use Y weapon” idea.
Torch, as well as Warhorn on ele have so much potential as weapons you just quickly swap to when out of combat, or even in combat in niche situations.
But the trait lines you have to take to use them are just flat out useless.

I know its so that people that didn’t buy the expansion can’t use those weapons, but it doesn’t benefit the game at all

I think alot of us would be happy if they scrapped the weapon based on Trait line Idea. I feel it just kinda clutters the whole process. We have been asking for new weapons and skills for a long time.

Anet finally listens.

Skills tied to trait line, not so bad, as you will probably want the traits that go with them anyway. But the Weapons? Not always. I wish they would change their minds on this too.

If you like the Paladin Support while DPSing arch type might just want to go with the Guardian, low hp base, but good support options with decent DPS potential. You will be very much a glass cannon as it has the same HP pool as the thief or Ele.

1) you can Farm any level that is higher then your personal level per tier once per day, some due to their instabilities are farmed more then others. While others you won’t find groups for because the instability is a pain. For example you won’t find many groups under level 10 or many that do 39 or 33. But that is my own experiences.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mistlock_Instability

2. Engi Condition damage is really good, I don’t think you will find that many groups will complain about it due to the recent changes as long as you learn the content.

I personally would never pay for a fractal or dungeon run. I have however sold and given them away.

A friend of mine (who usually due arah with) however does buy some paths now and then. To him he says, “Its a time vs reward thing.”

I know people who do it because they have the cash and don’t want to spend time doing the work.

Fractals 50 is a gamble though, sometimes you win, most times you won’t

The whole problem with defending an entire community is that the community isn’t wholly united in everything. Just one thing. Which is evident enough from this thread and the locked ones that even though we all enjoy doing dungeons, watching record runs and improving ourselves we will not agree on every topic.

We had a thread closed on this already. Let’s not let this one follow that track and be derailed. Instead lets try to focus on the purpose this thread was created for to start with.

Solo dungeons?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Talyn.3295

Talyn.3295

And btw, sorry I brought up McDonalds here. No idea why that triggered so many tr… uh… “not nice people”, but I do hope you get my point anyway.

You got to understand this is the dungeon forums, and due to developer neglect some of us have well.. to put it nicely lost our minds a little. The people here are not going to troll in a mean light. But we do have a tendency to get off topic or go crazy over something silly if the mood takes us. The people who trolled here would be some of the nicest people you would meet in game and would be happy to help you learn to solo content if you so desired.

Many people have ask for solo dungeons, and its not that people would be directly opposed to instanced solo content. The reason most of us solo dungeons now is for the challenge of it. But as it as stated earlier on, soloing a dungeon now isn’t going to be something to be taken on lightly. If the reason you want to solo the content is that you don’t like being part of a meta group and expected to change your build soloing wouldn’t be a good idea, doubly so if you have never done the dungeon before.

It isn’t likely that you will ever get an option for soloing dungeons though, we are lucky to get any kind of content updates for dungeons. We still have bugs and exploits that have been part of the dungeon community for years. For example Potions were bugged for up until the siege in lions arch during LS season two, despite multiple threads asking this to be fixed.

Dungeons are just not Anets priority right now.

Posted by: Talyn.3295

Talyn.3295

I will admit I was a little upset when they first announced the change. But then I realized that until now we have been beating our heads against a wall. And that’s it. Now I have the chance to bring in some friends who never did fractals before because they want those skins. It’s a good change when it means I can play with my friends. I would give up every “prestigious” skin I have for more ways to have fun with my friends. Because right now we really only have open world content, and a few dungeons or living story things. We need more things to do, and hopefully this will happen soon.

Maybe instead of worrying about if everyone will have a fractal weapon after this update we should be asking for skill based skins. Not worrying about skins that up until now have been up for grabs by RNG.

People have been carried through and gotten skins

People have bought fractals and gotten skins

People have just had dumb luck and gotten them.

If anet wants to add skill based skins I would be happy to support it, but I don’t see it happening because people would only complain there is no way for them to ever get them because the skill curve is way to high.

Maceless, Torchless PvE Builds?

in Guardian

Posted by: Talyn.3295

Talyn.3295

Meta is not torch if you aren’t running a hybrid or condition build. There are in fact, many equivalent meta builds you can run if you aren’t absolutely fixated on being in the top 1% of damage output.

Torch is very much a part of the Power Meta due to changes to Torch 4 and Radiance Trait Radiant fire. It can crit for 10k or more depending on might stacks and vulnerability. If I am lucky with Crits I can use torch 4 back to back.

Like I said, if he doesn’t want to be in the top DPS builds, he doesn’t need to run torch. Very few people require you to be in the top DPS percentiles when teaming. If he did want to be in that top 1%, he wouldn’t CARE about PVE builds that don’t use specific weapons; he would just whatever gear gave him that top 1%. Clearly, that’s not what the OP wants to do.

I don’t care what the OP does or doesn’t do. I must have miss read what you were saying because to me It came across as you were saying Torch was not a part of the Power meta and only useful for Conditions or Hybrid builds.

best spec for leveling?

in Guardian

Posted by: Talyn.3295

Talyn.3295

Leveling isn’t to hard. but there isn’t a spec that is gonna be best for it, alot of it will come down to your playstyle. Keep in mind we are not a Tank as in most MMO style games. We have low HP and no ability to make mobs stick to us.

We are however the masters of damage mitigation. We have access to blinds through Radiance and weapons like sword, greatsword and blocks like Aegis Focus 5 and Virtue of Resolve. Or Shield of the Avenger or Wall of Reflection.

Your healing skills are only usefully for keeping people topped off on hp.

In so far as leveling, I haven’t leved a toon through normal methods in over two year, so there have been some changes. This is what helped me when I was leveling.

1. Attack non hostile mobs, you get an xp bonus based off the amount of time a mob is on the map. This means things people don’t normally kill will give you more xp so be sure to take advantage of this. (Moas also drop poultry which can sell for a decent bit on the trading post due to usage in WvW food)

2. Also harvest all resource nods you see, they give decent xp and you can use those materials or sell them. As things like Iron softwood etc are worth more since ascended gear was introduced.

3. Some event chains can be very good for leveling, but you won’t find many people doing them anymore. There used to be a good one in Kessex hills, to left hand side with the centaurs. but I don’t know if it works anymore. It would be harder to solo with the champs until you master the class.

4. Try and stick to maps near your level, those seem to help me level faster then fully completely lower level ones before moving on.

5. Take gear that increases your power trait into zeal which is our highest damage tree so you can kill faster in open world content. After you max Zeal, work on Radiance.

6. You kittene Retreat/Save your selves and staff 3 for swiftness so you can map faster. Bane Signet is also nice to slot if you don’t need a condition cleanse for mobs in the area. Open world content is painfully easy at this point so you shouldn’t have much of an issue with enemies in most areas.

I would suggest greatsword for your first real weapon, get the feel for it, and its skills as it is one of our most used ones. Number 3 can also be used to help you move about the world a little faster.

Mace is a solid choice as well, with either focus or Torch as an offhand.

Hope this helps a bit.

[PvE, Dungeons] Hybrid build?

in Guardian

Posted by: Talyn.3295

Talyn.3295

You really shouldn’t be doing a hyrid build in PvE dungeons.

Why not?
I think such a build could be fun to play.

While you are welcome to run whatever build you like. A hybrid build is not going to allow for the same dps potential as a build devoted to either power or condition damage.

Conditions are better since the update. But only if you commit to them. As they have a lower base damage now, then before the change. Of course this also means that they have a higher maximum damage as well.

“*Condition Updates *
Damaging conditions were all reworked to better ensure damage is properly delivered in large-scale combat. All damaging conditions have been changed to intensity-stacking, and the maximum number of stacks for each damaging condition has been raised to a much larger number that should never be hit under normal circumstances.

Burning:

This condition will now stack in intensity. The formula for this condition has been rescaled to account for the new behavior of damaging conditions and to put more focus on the condition damage stat. Creatures that apply burning have been rebalanced to account for this change.
New damage over time: 7.5 + (1.55 * Level) + (0.155 * Condition Damage)"

You could run a sinster build as in Obal’s guild. But you won’t crank out the physical damage, due to the lost of your critical damage from having no extra ferocity. Your main source of damage will be burning and to maximize it you will be playing differently then you would with a power build.

This is as close to a hybrid build as you are going to get.

I was in my bank guild and joined a group of three who are actually from my main guild, but I said nothing. The fifth was a pug. We started Arah p2. They failed the skip to Belka, despite having 2 thieves. Then they failed to chain stealth from Belka to Abom. In all of the skips, I had to rush ahead and improvised. At Lupi, they failed to push him to the wall until they gave up and just fought him in the open. At some points, Lupi was pushed to the wall, but the mesmer failed to one shot him. He then blamed me for dodging out of the wall. They went down a few times at Alphard. Finally, when they failed the skip to Brie, they kicked the other pug thief for ‘being bad’ and kicked me for leaving aggro at their safe spot despite me having run half way ahead and all the mobs already leashed.

Who said guildies are not being kitten?

Rangers are decent enough, mostly used for Spotter and Frost spirit. They can do great condition damage since the recent changes as well. Mesmer is similar to guardian and can fill many of its roles nicely as well. But its timing takes a bit longer to master.

Necro has become slightly more useful in Dungeons, but still is hampered by its history and not always welcomed by pugs.

If you want something that is known for support, your probably gonna be looking at guardian. Guardian has alot of tools that primarily are used to keep other party members from taking damage. (Blinds, blocks, reflects, regen etc)

I hoped that helped a bit.

Thank you for your advise. It helped me.
I also saw that guardian has good support tools, however I am more used to play the “savage magic guy” than the “light magic knight”, which is why I wanted the ranger (and above all the druid in the next xpac).
Maybe I will try the two.

Is the ranger welcomed in dungeon and other group content ?

It really depends. Dungeons are really the only “group” content we have outside of like Spvp. WvW Roaming a power ranger with a long bow is deadly

In Dungeons the Ranger is a great class. Sadly it has a bad reputation. Mostly due to players not understanding how to play it. Many players got used to running with a Tank bear pet and a long bow in open world, then took this same approach to dungeons. It doesn’t work so well there.

So as a result many pugs like to kick rangers without giving them a chance. However if played right a ranger is great. I think you will find most experienced groups know this and are happy to welcome a well played ranger into their group.

We don’t know what druid is going to get in the expansion yet. So its possible you will get exactly what you are looking for. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I really think the Revenant will make a great support class.

Rev is gonna be in a worse place then Necros unless its gets some big changes.

I’m sorry to tell you there is no holy trinity in this game and will never be

Don’t understand why you are telling there is no holy trinity. Are talking about the tank/dps/heal trinity ? Yes I know.
I saw that arenanet has stated that this trinity was replaced by the dps/control/support one.
So I assume we can make a more support oriented character, and by that I am speaking about a half dps / half boon provider like those hybrid DPS we could find on vanilla WoW.

Or I am totally wrong ? Or you didnt read my post ?

It has been replaced by dps/control/support. But in this you have to realize that the trinity isn’t one where you fill one of those roles specifically. You are going to be doing all three of those at once.

You don’t really make a hybrid per say. Although depending on skill level you might need to add more toughness, healing or vitality to gear. Once you can read the attacks of the mobs and know when to dodge or when to use the correct defensive skills you won’t be taking as much damage. So at that point its like “Ok, I am wearing full clerics but I am not getting hit all that much, how much is the extra healing/toughness really helping?” At this point it might be time to start swapping into more offensive gear stats like Beserker or Sinister.

For example I play a Guardian. My guardian wears fully beserker gear.

My gear allows for me to provide DPS
However my Traits and my utility skills allow for me to support my team.

In some fights I use skills like Wall of Reflection or Shield of the Avenger to protect us from missile attacks.

In other other fights I use Stability or Aegis to prevent damage to my party. Example being the boss at the end of CoF path one. When the large Circle appears I pop ageis and my team is able to keep up with the DPS and not waste time dodging.

All classes bring a bit of this. The best being Guardian, Warrior, Elementalist and Thief, for various reasons. They allow for easy buffs (boons) and debuffs (vulnerability etc)

Rangers are decent enough, mostly used for Spotter and Frost spirit. They can do great condition damage since the recent changes as well. Mesmer is similar to guardian and can fill many of its roles nicely as well. But its timing takes a bit longer to master.

It’s sad. And I find it annoying and questionable some of the decisions made towards gear and how its gotten. Particularly Time gating.

I am not one to white knight Anet. I have my fair share of complaints about lazy game design and can point to several bad decisions that have been made by them.

There were however several good things that came about through decisions they made. Stepping away from the gear treadmill was one, and the idea of someone “stealing” a kill or your loot is another.

I guess its the military in me. But when I see something I just want it to be called as it is.

Edit: That way we know who or what to blame

Why is a “Gear Treadmill” such a difficult concept for people to grasp?

Curious why you ask? Because I have to say all the alternate progression just feels like the same thing coming back. Sure I’m not replacing gear, but I still have these barriers of entry that are annoying.

I won’t deny the barriers. But to me a barrier is a barrier. A gear treadmill is a gear treadmill. It’s like calling an apple and orange, sure they are both fruit and taste good, but they are not quite the same thing.

Legendary stats

lulz

A gear tread mill has two key factors

1) New Tiers are continually added. -Hasn’t happened
2) Each new Tier invalidates previous tiers. -Hasn’t happened

Stat choices aside, the fact my warrior is still using the exact same exotic greatsword I purchased for him shortly after hitting 80 almost three years ago now, invalidates your entire argument. It is just as viable today as it was then, despite the ascended introduction to the game.

Peace

Legendary stats

Absolutely not. They are intentionally on par with the highest stats, they are purely for skins, animations and changeable stats on the fly. That makes them a luxury, not an essential gain, which they would be if stats increased.

To give them increased stats would go against their design and upset an enormous number of people who came to GW2 to avoid stat treadmills. After the uproar caused by Ascended, the game does not need more treadmills

I would hardly call Ascended a treadmill, its one tier gear. I really hate when people use the term “treadmill” out of context.

But on topic, as someone who has crafted more then 4 legendaries, no, the stats do not need to be any higher then ascended gear.

Understand: this game was released with EXOTIC being top tier… the fact most begun with rare armor and slowly adapted to exotic which made everythung faceroll caused some nerfs.. Even legendaries had exotic values as main stats…. no AR no nothing

then people said well exotic is SO EASY to get can’t we farm for an higher tier,

It happened, ascended jewelry was released with fractals…
After the jewelry followed weapons and soon later armor, Legendary stats were improved with the promise they’d always be comparable to the top stat available in the game, which would be ascended

The introduction of ascended made a lot of people happy they could make a ‘end game armor" and made many more people upset as this was to be a game of “horizontal” progression, so |A-net statedf it wouldn’t launch any new tiers with stat values above ascended….

Now legendary backs are coming to us, I’d expect legendary trinkets as well, the stats will be selectable but level comparable to ascended…. why? see bold part

In the future I’d expect:

  • ascended & legendary foods ?
  • legendary armor (e.g. ascneded level; selectable stats)
  • legendary trinkets, ( back has been anounced)

most of this gear is part of a gear treadmill especially if you’ve been playing since head start. Though in no way as bad as most other (MMO)RPG’s

During the first months requirements (gear expected in AC)

was rare armor & weapon with runes, and preferably exotic trinkets.
If you had no runes Ruby orbs were no problem

This changed to Exotic only, and gear checks for exotic, the fact people ran ruby orbs was tolerated less and less.

This changed into gear checks for ZERK ruby orbs were now and obscure part of the playerbase …

This changed into gear checks for “Meta” with ascneded trinkets and weapon preferably and in some cases even asc armor….

As legendary armor and trinkets wil add no stats it will likely shift to the previous step ncluding the armor being mandatory in 1 yr, maybe 18 months.

This requirement is in the end rediculous as armor and stats are being downscaled ANYWAYS leaving you with a cap comparable to rare armor with lvl 80 runes and lvl 80 trinkets downscaled to the correct level values in AC… rendering everything above exotic mostly a waste of time.

Still gear checks are bing performed, mostly to show people are above others.

As it is now
I have 2 characters with full ascneded armor, 1 has 2 full armors
I have 4 characters with 2 or more ascended armor pieces
I have 1 character with 1 ascended armor piece
I have 13 characters with full ascended weapons (all weapons for the main sets) sometimes secondary weapons are stille Exotic
I have 15 characters with 1 or more sets of jewelry and trinkets I also have 15 ascneded back items….
only 14 use their ascened as theirmain treinket sets (I have 1 character with exotic zealot trinkets due to the fact I still cannot buy asnceded ones.)
I expect some trinkets to trinkle down to the unfortunates not having trinkets… or armor…. but I’m not working fanatically to get legendaries as is. maybe in the future…

I do not need mandatory stat change to restart on soon to be 17 alts.

/sigh

I am well aware that when the game released Exotic was the best. However adding one tier of gear to a game does not make it a treadmill.

A treadmill is:

Oh I got rare gear. this is the best in slot

2 months later -> new content. New gear added exotics

Oh boy! I got exotic. Best in slot.

3 months later -> New content. New gear added ascended

Oh boy I got Ascended New gear best in slot!

6 months later -> New Content. New Gear Mystic gear

etc etc etc.

Each time you have to get that new tier of gear as the old set has become obsolete.
This has not happened in GW2. As exotic is still good enough for everything but very high level fractals. As I have heard Ascended was supposed to be in before launch, but didn’t make it so we started with exotic.

Regardless as if this was the case or not. One new Tier is not a gear treadmill.

But 3 legendaries?

Keep in mind that the new precursors will be acquired through a lengthy “scavenger hunt” style of collection achievement, and having to create that for every single new precursor will take a great amount of time.

Also note that they said they will be releasing more new legendaries as the story progresses.

Yeah I forgot about all that stuff, I just saw only 3 and went ._.

Aren’t they supposed to be starting out replacing the joke legendaries like the Moot and Quip?
