One handed sword for both hands: a Power focused melee weapon.
Daggers for both hands: a Precision focused melee weapon.
Hammer: long range weapon (1.200).
Axes for both hands: medium range weapon (900).
Maces for both hands: condition based melee weapon.
And that’s it. I hope we get no greatsword (it’s WAY overused) and no bow – we have already been shown that the hammer skills have 1200 range, and the axe skills have 900 range, so there’s no need for more ranged weapons.
I highly suggest that Revenants get a more thorough TRAIT system than all other classes to make up for the limited customization.
I would rather have a lot of legends – more than the 4 everyone is predicting – so we would have more options, even if less possible combinations in which to mix those options.
Based on what (little) information we have, that’s still useless in the current GW2.
The issue isn’t that we can’t interrupt the bosses. It’s that there’s no point in doing so. All bosses have slow attacks that can be dodged quite nicely. Why take CC skills and reduce your own DPS if you can just take more damage skills and dodge the boss’ big attack, instead of interrupting it?
Notice that the thing with the Wyvern is not that it has a strong, single attack – rather, it has been built so interrupting it also makes it more vulnerable to damage, which is something CC doesn’t do to any other boss in the game. In the end, it’s still about DPSing the boss faster, with CC helping in doing so, instead of interrupting a boss to really prevent it from doing something.
The current bosses in the game could be adapted so there’s actually a point in interrupting them… But let’s be real, ArenaNet is never going to rework so much of the original game.
From what I understood, and I might be wrong, if you interrupt the wyvern’s flight, you are not merely interrupting a single attack. You are interrupting an entire raid sequence while he is in the air, which I assume it means that you are preventing a massive amount of red circles and a stance that would make him incredible hard to target with melee weapons. A traditional, melee zerker party would probably get toasted while dealing little to no damage input in that scenario.
Exactly. The extra damage is a bonus. The actual reason you are CCing the wyvern is to prevent it from igniting half the battlefield while you can’t reach it.
Yep, and that mechanic is specific to the Wyvern. You are not interrupting an attack, which is (at most) what CC does to all the bosses currently in the game; the specific Wyvern boss has been made so CC is more effective there.
That’s not a bad thing. The bad thing is that, while CC and the new “Defiance” system have been made useful in a fight, they will still be useless in everything within the current GW2.

It’s a bit of a contradiction between what I liked about GW2 initially and what it has become. I liked exploration, finding random pieces of lore and doing events that told little, self-contained stories. I also liked fighting a wide variety of enemies with interesting motivations, Or at least somewhat interesting.
The issue is, you want good, polished and fun content. But ArenaNet knows they don’t need to bother with any of that – they can just add grind, and plenty of players will eat it up. Look at the Silverwastes – it’s basically copy-paste so we get the same thing four times, with the same kind of enemy dominating nearly the entire map, incredibly generic events most of the time, and lacking in polish (why haven’t the new currencies been added to the wallet?). Yet it’s one of the places that always has a lot of people playing.
ArenaNet has no need to make the things you asked for. Grinders will settle for much less, and that’s basically who ArenaNet’s target audience is right now.
Actually, poor communities help to cripple games that could have been great. Just take a look at all the grinding content ArenaNet has added to the game because there are a lot of grinders and farmers among the players. Heh, even ascended gear only exists because the community is rather bad.
This isn’t a good idea, to be honest.
The main reason why ArenaNet can release outfits is exactly because they’re basically a single piece. That means ArenaNet does not need to worry about how each individual piece would interact with the other armor options available in the game; and since each weight class has different styles, in order to avoid clipping the outfits would have to be different for heavy armor users, medium armor users and light armor users.
In other words, it would be a lot of extra work, which would mean less outfits.
I think the biggest speculation for the Guard Spec is Longbow, and I do /not/ want that at all.
Same here. I would prefer something preposterous like a main hand shield than a longbow (or shotbow, which would be even worse).
I also hope no one gets greatsword (other than the necromancers, which we know will get it). It’s one of the most overused weapons in the game. I hope revenants can’t use it, either.
Changing the character model limit helps more than changing the quality when it comes to big events, I find.
The side effect, at least for me, is that the character model limit replaces people by name tags. And the name tags themselves are ugly :P From a purely practical point of view, that is probably superior, you’re right. But from an aesthetic point of view, I prefer reducing character model quality – the placeholders are not badly done textures, they just all look the same.
I also have name tags turned off, which also helps a lot.
Interesting! I’ll have to try that some day.
The closest I can think of are the Ambrite weapons.

Press Esc -> open the Options menu -> go to the Graphics Options tab -> Set Character Model Quality to Lowest.
This replaces everyone else’s characters with placeholders. You won’t see what armor they are wearing or what the character looks like – you only see weapons and backpacks.
Advantages:
- It helps with optimization, especially in large events, since the models are less detailed and far less diverse.
- You avoid seeing a lot of ugly people.
- That guy who spent thousands in the Gem Store thinking people will stare in awe at his armor? You get to laugh at him as he looks the same as everyone else.
I only wish it would also hide backpacks, and replace weapons with placeholders too.
Specializations only get ONE NEW WEAPON
Source?
Tanks reduce damage and control mobs. That’s all a tank does. Support keeps tank and DPS alive
If a tank reduces damage and support keeps the tank alive, what about a character that reduces the damage the tank takes and thus keeps it alive? That doesn’t fit your definitions.
Warrior- Main Hand Pistol
Mesmer- Shield off hand
Ranger – staff two hander
Engineer – Hammer two hander
Guardian -Longbow two hander
Thief – Rifle two hander
Revenant – Axe main hand
Necromancer – Great Sword two hander
Elementalist – Sword Main hand
You people honestly think some professions will get 5 new skills through a two-handed weapon and others will get only 2 new skills, through an off-hand?
Wouldn’t it make more sense to believe that everyone will have at least 5 new skills, either through a new two-handed weapon or a new main-hand and a new off-hand weapon?
I expect A LOT more “unlock through playing” and not “through GEM store” content in new expansion ( referring to weapons/armours )
Unlikely. We will probably see very few skins available in the game through normal play. ArenaNet has to keep the art team making more skins for the Gem Shop, and between selling you a $40 expansion with 6 armor designs or a $40 expansion with 1 armor design, well, guess what’s more profitable for them?
In the end if you dont like it dont play it. Trying to call out anet for a single map you dont like is very disrespectful and straight up rude. There are lots of people who do like it and play it regularly.
I wonder when did it become “disrespectful” for one player to claim he doesn’t like something in the game. I guess some people wished this forum were nothing more than a rose-colored look at the game.
Do people like it? So try to imagine something: what if it had zero rewards? Would people “play it regularly” then? Do players like the map itself, or do they like the rewards they get there, with playing in the map being just an acceptable sacrifice in order to get those rewards?
Ah, and for the records…
(anet said ascended doesnt count as its optional).
ArenaNet has never said that. Funny that you quoted almost all of Colin’s post, and still got it wrong.
Bad design or not, it is very hard to argue with 1 of the most profitable G/h farming locations, if not the most.
Indeed.
That exists in all games. But that doesn’t mean the OP is representative of the majority and I don’t believe he is.
And you have nothing on which to make that argument stand. It’s – guess what – your opinion!
The line I have a problem with is when you say “that’s why Anet doesn’t have to make fun content”. But some people find that content fun. So Anet isn’t not making fun content.
See, Vayne, it’s the Manifesto thing all over again: you are reading it, but not understanding it.
Take a look at what I said. Did I say, “that’s why ArenaNet doesn’t make fun content”? Nope. Ergo, your reply that “some people find that content fun” is worthless. Did I say “that’s why ArenaNet doesn’t have to make fun content”? Yep! And guess what, it’s true – as the OP here has proved, people are willing to play through content even if it’s not fun.
I’m going out on a limb here but I suspect were going to get a two week SAB (Super Adventure Box) redux – worlds 1&2.
Is the guy who made SAB even working at ArenaNet right now? I thought he had left.
Yeah, only they don’t. Considering how NCSoft’s quaterly report mentioned how much of a failure the China release was, even after ArenaNet spent all that time and energy to adapt the game to the Chinese market (or try to adapt, at least), it’s clear that ArenaNet doesn’t really know where the money is.
perhaps they shouldn’t have tried to rip the players off then eh?
Indeed.
That means that saying it’s only for farmers (because I don’t farm and I like it) is simply your opinion.
Vayne, sorry to burst your bubble, but saying “it’s your opinion!” doesn’t invalidate an argument. And ironically, trying to refute my argument by claiming you like the map is incredibly weak, since that’s – guess what – just your opinion.
I don’t have to give evidence to support an opinion that I and other people are having fun.
Because you can’t.
You, however, would have to give evidence in your claims that it was lazy.
Already done. You simply ignored it (or didn’t understand it).
That’s how it works. You made the first statement and don’t really back it up at all. Why do I even need a counter argument?
Because that’s how this little thing called “having a discussion” works. I give one opinion based on arguments, someone replies with a different opinion providing counter arguments, and so on. And once in a while, someone who doesn’t understand what a discussion is pops in trying to mindlessly white knight, only to be proved wrong over and over.
Also Anet knows where the money is. If it was more profitable to stick to NA, then China and EU wouldn’t even have had the game.
I would love to actually see the stats on gear removed, something like everything would be celestial or no stats would be gained from gear. Instead, anet should focus more on traits because gear is one dimensional while traits change (at least should) the playstyle and improve roles. Also respeccing would be virtually costless.
I wish, too. Just as the game became a lot more open and with a lot more replayability when refunding traits became free, being able to change all your stats quickly would be a huge improvement.
But let’s be honest, ArenaNet would never do that. We would have a thousand grinders here complaining about how they spent half their lives grinding materials to make 10 sets of ascended armors, each with different stats, and removing stats from gear would make all that meaningless.
Just consider it one more thing in which grinders hurt GW2.
Without it, I would NEVER pay these 200 crystals for the episode where I just replay common events in Iron Marches. Without it I would stay as far away as humanly possible from the Dry Top aka “I can kick you from the cliff and you can’t”. Without it I would NEVER suffer another line of Marjory <3<3 Kasmeer dialogues and kept miles away from the “one dumb male & 4 wonderfull females” group.
Kinda sad that people are willing to go through content they don’t enjoy just because they get a shiny reward in the end. This is the reason why ArenaNet does not have to even bother trying to make fun content – they know they don’t need to, people are going to play regardless as long as they get a reward for it.
Content is subjective mate. There are people who think Living Story Season 2 has been fun especially when played back to back.
Yet the OP clearly states he hates it, but is willing to play it anyway just to get a reward. Hence my comment.
If everyone in this thread were to say “Oh man, you’re right, the repetitive activities in the Silverwaste could be described as ’grindy!”, what would the next step be?
Then my life’s work would be complete, and I would be able to free myself from the GW2 chains in my soul.
This isn’t the first time ArenaNet has done this. Between the Crown Pavillion, the Scarlet invasions, Dry Top and Silverwastes, they have clearly been making a lot of stuff that is just a grind box disguised as content.
People can either accept it, or speak against it. I’m speaking against it. I doubt it will change much, or that it will prevent HoT from being basically a giant grind box, but it’s what I can do.
Either you’re not understanding it’s meaning or you’re just cherry picking pieces that allow you to argue against.
Nope, I’m rather sure that’s what you are doing. Using a definition of grind restricted as something done “in order to level or to unlock content”, while the examples you have presented yourself (not to mention ArenaNet’s own definition) describe grind as more than that (gear, gold, currency).
Hello! My question as you can figure from the title: Will the boxed expansion come with at least 1 free charater slot? (or at least gems/voucher to be able to purchase one)
Probably not. ArenaNet does want people to pay them as much as possible.
Each definition said that grind was repeatedly killing the same mobs over and over, either in order to level or to unlock content.
Yeah… You didn’t read the text you have quoted, did you?
“Level or unlock content”?
http://www.techopedia.com/definition/27527/grinding
Grinding most commonly involves killing the same set of opponents over and over in order to gain experience points or gold.
Gain gold is not “level or unlock content”. Your own definition is thus proven wrong.
http://www.examiner.com/article/what-is-grinding-grinding-video-games
“*Grinding is a term from the video game industry which is used to describe the action of repeatedly killing mobs inside of a video game in order to mass gain experience or currency*
Mass gain currency is not “level or unlock content”. Thus, again, your own definition is proven wrong.
This is the actual TLDR; from your OP.
I personally don’t like the Silverwastes so it’s bad and the devs are lazy.
Yeah, you would probably make a decent counter-argument if you didn’t TLDR and had actually read it. But then again, if you could give a proper counter argument about the points I have mentioned, you would probably have done so by now.
Using the Anet definition of grind, which has to do with ascended gear, it doesn’t fit. You don’t have to play the Silverwastes to get ascended gear. It has nothing to do with ascended gear.
Didn’t we already document that your interpretation of ArenaNet’s definition of grind is flawed? It’s in my signature, if you would like a reminder.
The Silverwastes, as far as PvE goes, is the best place to get ascended gear. Incidentally, that’s because you need to grind to get ascended, and the Silverwastes is the grindiest place in the game. It’s very little more than a grind box, in fact.
I’m just curious, would you rather find out about specializations next, or guild halls. Explain for us.
Specializations. If those have been well designed, they will change gameplay far more than guild halls, which will likely not be available to all players (I doubt all guilds will get one, due to the probably steep requirements), and which in the end will likely be more a way for people to socialize among themselves than a gameplay-defining feature.
Of course, we risk having specializations that are badly designed, deemed useless by everyone and never used, in which case guild halls could be more important. I hope that isn’t the case, though.
Is ascended required to do anything in the game aside from high level fractals?
Irrelevant. Again, as seen in my signature, ArenaNet thinks we shouldn’t have to grind in order to get the best gear in the game. Notice that they didn’t say we shoudn’t have to grind in order to get exotic gear – they have claimed they think we shouldn’t have to grind in order to get the best gear in the game.
Saying that it’s not grind because ascended is not required to do everything in the game is going against ArenaNet’s own definition of grind.
I had to go back 13 pages but I found a post from Anet that clarified what they meant. What surprised me though is that it was posted in a thread started by you.
Which is pretty much I have said, right here:
Perhaps you should look further into what they meant by grind.
Yeah, it’s in my signature. Taken from a topic I made about grind. Incidentally, it’s nice that you mentioned it, because…
Why were you surprised?
Which has zero to do with the Silverwastes. Thanks for playing.
It has everything to do with the Silverwastes. Ascended gear = requires grind = Silverwastes is basically a giant grind. Match, point, your loss.
Oh. I didn’t see the rest of your post addressed to that player until now. You do realize that those games are single player games, right?
…Uh, did you read what I was answering to? Specifically the part that said…
In the history of all MMOs, and basically every RPG as well, there has been no game that did not rely on grinding. It basically defines the genre.
Bolding by me. Unless you think “every RPG” has been a multiplayer game, my answer was addressing the topic at hand. How could you have missed that?
(edited by Test.8734)
I may be an optimist about this, but I think applying the current PvE meta to HoT meta is flawed thinking.
Let’s assume that the encounters in HoT are so different that the current PvE meta doesn’t apply there.
We would still be left with everything today, everything in the current GW2, being left with a meta strongly focused on zerker and zerker only.
And if you really think ArenaNet is going to rework ALL of PvE, well, that’s not just “optimistic”.
I’m sure the Revenant will have a legend more focused on direct damage. I only hope it isn’t imbalanced, so it’s more effective in PvE than the other legends, just like zerker is current more effective than anything else.
You claim this is a grindy game yet confirm that you dont need to to grind as quoted in your signature.
As seen in my signature, ArenaNet thinks we shouldn’t have to grind in order to get the best gear in the game.
Yet, Ascended gear, which is the best gear in the game, is incredibly grindy.
Ergo, by ArenaNet’s own definition, GW2 has more grind than they think the game should have. Thus, it’s a grindy game.
hunter has a lot more mobility / kiting you need to do, so whys everyone say mesmers hard when I’m getting top scores easily?
There’s no “hunter” in this game. WoW is that way →

Yeah, it’s in my signature. Taken from a topic I made about grind. Incidentally, it’s nice that you mentioned it, because…
Test: IIRC the was a recent discussion where this was clarified. There is no need to grind for anything in game. Exotics are easy to come by just by playing the game. Ascended isnt needed except for fractals. (Not getting into the stat increase, because it’s not relevant.)
Nope. You can see at my signature, or you can read that topic again for the details, but what you have described isn’t what ArenaNet calls grind.
It’s funny how often people try to defend the grind in this game. I have many times seen the argument “No, when ArenaNet said ‘we don’t want players to grind’, they didn’t mean that they don’t want players to grind! They meant [insert random meaning here that wasn’t even hinted by ArenaNet]!”. That doesn’t really work. ArenaNet has many times clarified what they meant, and the conclusion taken from their own clarifications is that the game has more grind than they claimed it would have. That, based from things all the way from the Manifesto to Colin’s recent forum posts.
In the history of all MMOs, and basically every RPG as well, there has been no game that did not rely on grinding. It basically defines the genre.
…Uh, no. The focus on grind is something recent, dominating western games basically after WoW proved that players are willing to go through content they don’t enjoy as long as they got a reward for it.
Take a look at classic RPGs, such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Phantasy Star IV, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. Did those rely on grind? Grinding was actually a way to make the game worse, by making those games easier than they were meant to be. In a few games, you were actually punished for grinding too much (in PSIV, for example, you begin to permanently lose abilities if your level is too high).
As consumers that’s really the only venue that’s open to us. Find the content we like and play that. And you know what, Anet may not have delivered the “grind free utopia” a lot of people were hoping for, but they were good about creating a game where most forms of content produce relatively equal rewards based on time invested.
The thing is, ArenaNet releases a lot of content that is just a massive grind. And the more resources they use to make grind, the less resources they have available to do anything else. Often, it looks like less that they are making a game to a diverse audience with different tastes, and more like they are making a game for grinders, and no one else.
Which is what the great majority of other MMORPGs has done. Incidentally, the great majority of MMORPGs has failed – how many successes have we had in the recent years? The rebooted Final Fantasy XIV, Rift years ago, and that’s pretty much it.
Are current meta is “zerker only”. You must have a meta
I disagree.
The issue with berseker isn’t that it’s the most effective way to PvE, rather that it’s the most effective way to PvE everywhere.
If we had better designed encounters so one area is actually different from the other, we could have one place in which zerker is the most effective build, another in which a combination of different roles in the most effective build, another in which conditions + control is the most effective build, etc.
We don’t need to have a single meta. If the game were well designed, we would have such variety that different scenarios would have different metas.
I’d imagine the specialisation deep dives will come out in one chunk since they’ll likely want it to come out before their PAX East playable demo.
Assuming we will have access to specializations in the playable demo. It may as well be that we will have access only to the Revenant.
That is entirely possible, but since it’s a major feature I can’t imagine them leaving it out of the playable demo that everyone will be watching.
Honestly, I think the specializations are not even done yet. Maybe we will have access to one or two (the Druid and the necromancer greatsword-using one), but I doubt we will see all of them.
I see players every day complain this game is too hard. Therefore a majority of players must think that. Logical fallacy is false.
Ergo…
Aside from the fact that I don’t believe you see people in mapchat complaining about this every day (I play more hours than you, I can almost guarantee it) and maybe I see a complaint in map chat once a week.
I never see players complaining this game is too hard. Therefore only a minority of players think that. Logical fallacy is false.
;)
Thing is, if i drop incompatible loot in a dungeon i do not want to wait 2-3 weeks until i get the kitten thing sold because there is already hundreds in the TP.
So don’t try to sell the item for more than it’s worth, and you will sell it far faster than that.
In the manifesto this is what they were referring to. Its not required. Period.
You mean the "No one enjoys that. No one finds it fun” part of that comment didn’t exist?
On the flip side, some say we want certain things put into the revenant, without knowing the full class how can we know if the lack of your suggestions will matter or not?
Because ArenaNet is not going to simply read the players’ suggestions and implement them blindly. Heh, they don’t even do the things we ask for regarding content that is already in the game (see the NPE, the new Dailies, and so on).
The meaning behind the suggestions is what matters. If players complain that the Revenants lack mobility and ArenaNet has already made a legend focusing on mobility, they can just pat their backs and think “good thing we got that covered”. If players are complaining that Revenants are better than Necromancers are dealing with conditions, ArenaNet may want to check if necromancers aren’t in need of some changes (and they are). If players are complaining that Revenants get too much Stability, it’s a way for ArenaNet to remember if the way that boon has been reworked for the other professions has been done in a way so everyone gets a minimum of Stability.
As much as I think ArenaNet has been doing a rather poor job, assuming they lack the reading comprehension required to read the current feedback and turn it into something useful is quite offensive to them.
I’d imagine the specialisation deep dives will come out in one chunk since they’ll likely want it to come out before their PAX East playable demo.
Assuming we will have access to specializations in the playable demo. It may as well be that we will have access only to the Revenant.
Additionally, there is a taunt skill in Jalis’ legend that applies 3 seconds of taunt, slow, and costs 50 energy with no cooldown.
Which is single target only, as mentioned above. And there is no situation in which it would be better to taunt an enemy that does not have any kind of CC resistance than to just DPS it faster.
Taunt will be useless in everything we have today. It may be that some of the encounters in HoT will be designed differently, but in all the current GW2 content, between using a character as DPS or using a character as a tank, even if tanking worked, it would be better to use a character as DPS.
My healing signet only works when im ooc not during a fight, and i can only click it once and hope im not getting smacked hard whereas a dedicated healer would have me covered so i can get back in the fight.
I suddenly have flashbacks of GW1, in which Monk players would often complain about Warrior players who thought they could just jump in the middle of combat and attack enemies mindlessly, assuming the healers would have infinite healing and do nothing else other than healing them.
Now, this reason … is not worth anything. Why? Because we have the mailing system. Which actually makes scams WORSE.
People who trade through the mailing system deserve to be scammed.
The truth is, there is no good reason to implement a direct trading system when we already have the trading post. Direct trading is usually requested by players who want to scam others, or to fool people into buying stuff with higher prices than those available on the TP.
I’m glad this feature is not in the game, and I hope ArenaNet will never implement it.
i think it could be interesting if the generation was slower, but the revenant had access to skills that sped up the generation (not just filling the bar like life force, but just adding more positive ticks), kinda like how in GW1, energy management skills were important. “this is the skill i use to make sure i still have energy to operate in prolongued fights”.
The thing is, the Revenant doesn’t have access to that many skills. If there were a skill that helped with energy management and it were almost required, where would it be? In a weapon? But then all other weapons would have subpar energy. In a legend? But then all other legends would have subpar energy.
In GW1, we could choose to fill half our skill bar with high energy skill, and the rest with skills that gave energy; or we could fill our entire skill bar with low energy skills and avoid energy management skills. The Revenant isn’t that versatile – all of its skill bar is locked, be it through the weapon skills or the legend skills.
hay all reaaaly exited for heart of thorns…however ive been wondering….will there be new hairstyles, eye/hair color and other such character customization for all the races ?
Probably through the Gem Store only.
So I’m re-reading what I wrote and somehow I fail to see where I said I think that the Revenant should have anything superior to anything in any mode.
Zerk = superior to all other stats in PvE.
Strangely enough, I’m also failing to see where I said anything about PvE or what anyone chooses to use in any game mode.
Zerk = superior to all other stats in PvE.
So I’m re-reading what I wrote and somehow I fail
Indeed.
