All of the bosses in path 2 are soloable. Being at max range of Alphard and strafing back and forth will make most of his projectiles miss. The last boss is pretty easy too.

This picture reminds us once again that you shouldn’t judge people based on their class. Several minutes earlier this guardian told us in Lion’s Arch that he didn’t want to team up with 2 light armors and a ranger for Fractals level 20.
We managed to convince him to give it a try anyway, but he predicted that we’d find out in no time that it doesn’t work.
Our first Fractal is the swamp, we all do fine. Guess who is the first player to go down at Mossman? In fact, throughout the whole run our squishy players did really well. Our ranger hardly went down, our other necro a few times, and I hardly went down at all. The guardian was eating the dirt quite a lot throughout the whole run. It really all boils down to player skill. And no doubt some classes are better than others. There is an imbalance, make no mistake. And don’t get me wrong, this particular player wasn’t a bad guy. He finished the run with us, and we didn’t hear anything out of him after the first Fractal. So I’m not posting this to come down on the guy. But this attitude has got to stop. Just play together and have fun.
Do you realize that most boss aggro is dependent upon who has the most toughness+armor? So with a group of light armored players – the guardian has to eat most of the aggro. So, he’s going to go down more.
No, that’s not true. Boss aggro mainly deals with who is doing the most damage to the boss. It’s definitely more noticeable on Thief when you want to stay behind a boss and it wants to aggro to you for doing the most damage. The idea of the “Anchor Guardian” is a myth and nothing more.
For trash though, they certainly seem to target my guardian over others. In the dredge fractal after killing the champ, all those lil moles spawning from the carrier tended to target me, the only guardian. I probably had the most armor, even with using full zerk armor, I had 30 in valor. I noticed that after being downed repeatedly, none of my other party members seemed to be taking damage. I started running away around the tank, and lo and behold, just about every dredge followed me. So proximity was not enough to dissuade those moles from deaggroing. Of course, the rest of the party got kitten ed that all the dredge were chasing me as I tried my best to survive and made me stand still. Having one wall of reflection was not enough. After downing 3 times in rapid succession and getting a defeat, the rest of the party were downed and subsequently defeated in no time, suggesting to me that they must’ve had no armor in their builds. Before trying again, I swapped all of my zerk gear for knight gear, and my greatsword for a hammer, bringing my armor from 2600 to 3200 or so. At fractal scaling 38 this was enough to make those trash attacks that downed me after taking hits for a few seconds to barely even causing my health to dip. Might’ve just been the protection and AH procs for using hammer. Anyway point being, the “anchor guardian” is a thing, just not for bosses.
It could also have to do with you doing more damage than your team, you attacking first, or any number of other things Anet won’t tell us about.

Pugging at 48 is easier then pugging at low levels. I have yet to fail at a 48 run.
It’s not about completing but about using a brain.
Umm, what? At higher levels it requires your brain to complete them. Not sure where your going with your response. Those that fail fall out of coordination or need to watch a few more videos to get the tactics down. Lets be honest, a good player re skills depending on the fractal they get. At higher levels it is very rare not to see another player reset skills. That is a good indication the run will be successful.
I wish there were no Rabid-wearing Longbow / Brown Bear Rangers in Fractal 48, but unfortunately, I’ve seen them there more than once.

Sure, it’s a shame I never had people around me willing to speed run. No one I know does that, I have never ran a speed run (though I am quite capable), and anyone I asked—like Obal—just basically told me to roll warrior then we could talk.
I don’t really care about recognition though, I was joking (hence the Kind of a Big Deal phrase). I’m just glad that when I pug high level fractals, people don’t kick me. That’s all I ever wanted: to be able to do my favorite thing which is to ranger in dungeons.
And now I can. So many people are rolling ranger just because of that 5:27 cof run. It’s been so much better to play gw2…I was on the verge of quitting to be completely honest. For me, it was hard to reconcile my love of the ranger profession with the community’s rejection of rangers. Because if I wasn’t playing ranger, I wasn’t min/max’ing fun. If I was playing ranger, I just got crapped on.
Hey, Brazil, my man—I’m just glad to be here. You’re a better player than me anyways, you deserve all the recognition you get.
I have to work now. Bleh. Happy hunting!
It confuses me when people are nice to me…. I’d rather you just call me something insulting and say “Thanks, I mean it.” But anyhow, I’m glad that it helped you and I’m sorry for helping form the bias against Rangers.

Of course, Guang and Brazil get all the credit for that build. If it wasn’t for Brazil and his meddling bear, I’d be kind of a big deal. Lol
You had a much longer time and a greater opportunity to do exactly what Guang and I did and you did not accomplish that.
Lol I hate making videos though :p
I did talk a lot about it but was always shouted down, made fun of, or basically ignored so I gave up. I had no street cred. You do, thank you for getting the message out.
Remember how Guang was treated at first? I was treated the same way here, on guru, and on reddit. I didn’t have the math and experience like Guang to argue my points as well as he does though.
Seriously, though, thanks for finally showing everyone that ranger is “OK”. I am grateful for that! Rock on!
why would people underestimate sword ranger
i believe each profession does relatively high melee dps and weaker range dps (well not engineer bcz they dont have melee)At the time people would post screen caps of their random ranger alt hitting for 1k sword crits and then they’d laugh about it. In reality, buffed and with level 80 traits, you can be doing 2.5k crits pretty easily, not to mention the pet. So I’d make that argument and I’d get 50 responses saying basically “you can never factor in pet because it’s usually dead”. Then I’d explain how my pets don’t die in dungeons and then they’d rip on me for taking a drake instead of a cat all the time.
I seriously could not win. Were you around to see those debates?
If you had made a video of a 16 second Evolved Destroyer fight, a really fast CoF run with visibly high DPS, anything like that, you could have gotten people’s attention. Coming into forums without any form of numbers or videos (videos are really the way to go) won’t get you far. The one video I’ve seen from you…. I don’t know if it was serious or not. I don’t think it really helped to change anyone’s mind, though. Numbers alone aren’t really enough to change most people’s mind unless it’s a huge single number like the last hit of Hundred Blades. That’s why people think that Warrior is the end-all of DPS. I’ve managed to somehow not provide any math and still gain recognition, but I think it’s because people are able to see the the damage I’m doing in videos.
Also, debates aren’t so much about winning. The point of a debate is to change the listener’s mind. Both parties of a debate often feel that they have won despite the circumstances.

I keep agroing the trash while trying to kill the gate keeper. And I dont’ seem to be able to kill any of the trash.
Do people try to kill the trash(if possible), or just try to kill the gate keeper best way possible without agroing the trash.
Skip the trash and fight the Aboms in the corner.

If only the best players wore zerker gear; seems to be mostly the opposite – but those ppl live in CoF P1
They actualy do, one of them just answered your post above me (edit: now two posts above me xD). That’s how dungeons in GW2 are designed. All you need to do is simply to punch the sandbag untill it’s dead. Problem for any zerker – pro, or not pro starts when his team simply lack dmg to put down enemy fast enough so they run of every possible cooldown to avoid and/or mitigate incoming damage. CoF for example is easy as kitten. 4 warriors tear through slaver in like what, 5-8s? With “pro” healing, toughness, vitality builds in your party it simply take AGES to bring one down – and if you have zerkarrior he’s most likely downed or dead if he couldn’t get rid of aggro. How about punching last boss without any result because your team can’t overcome his healing without 3 people being busy destroying the crystals? Or let’s take TA F/U – hundreds of people cry all over the place how impossible last boss is while all you have to do is to have decent DPS, some kind of projectile reflection and you tear through him in 20s or so not even pressing a dodge. It’s not rocket science. I’m average player that makes tons of mistakes and I maybe could lick Brazil’s shoes, and that’s if he let me to – I have completely no problem running content with full zerker team, that consist atleast one mesmer and one guardian. But when I join team that think it’s fun to bash enemy for half an hour well then that’s a whole diffrent story.
You don’t have to lick my shoes. Just make a fool out of all of the bad players you come across. I don’t even wear shoes, anyways.

There’s more to GW2 life than being a zerker in CoF path 1. Although, zerkers can make any path easier in any dungeon- unless they are dead practically the entire dungeon, screaming at everyone else since it’s clearly the other players fault that the zerker is dead. If only the best players wore zerker gear; seems to be mostly the opposite – but those ppl live in CoF P1
The best players do wear Berserker’s gear. Unfortunately, so do the people that are wannabe best players. They give us a bad name (me speaking as one of the best players, of course).

Not to mention full zerk ranger melts gate faster than full zerk thief (which is often taken to farm runs).
I’m not too sure about that.
I’m not too sure too, but this is just my personal impresion. However timing is very similar to say the least. You should do some tests and post it
I’ve already got this: http://youtu.be/tIu_ZktvlZ4
Ranger could probably do it fast with a Jaguar / Jungle Stalker, Hunter’s Call, Quickening Zephyr, and Sword. It’s something I’ll for sure test when I go into CoF next, but I have no idea when that will be.

You play a Necro, yeah? When you summon a minion, what animation does it do? And just in case you don’t know, have a video of the minion summoning animation:
Yes, but my minions do not appear underneath my enemies, and they do not make me extremely strong after I consume them.
Minion summoning as done by the necromancer, is not an attack that needs to be dodged, or can be dodged.
When an attack demands that you dodge, there has to be something visibly that you are dodging. Surely that makes sense?
oh my god how could you seriously complain about Lupi’s grub spawn being a bad tell
there’s no way someone could be this kittening obtuse by accident
Well then professor, why don’t you tell us what it is we have to dodge when Lupi summons a grub. Go on.
You combine a tell with a mechanic and BOOM! A boss attack! Add in a player with the ability to think logically and BOOM! a well-designed fight! Add in a player…. Nevermind.
Youtube Channel – http://www.youtube.com/t3llularman
But it screams out ’he’s about to do something!’, no?
Yes, but what? What is it that you are dodging exactly? Please tell me. You are not dodging a grub, because if you dodge, it doesn’t appear. There’s no projectile, and the boss doesn’t physically touch you. Nothing seems to appear on the ground either. So what is it with that move that we dodge? This is exactly what I mean. It’s bad. Other games would at least have him do something on the ground, that you’re obviously supposed to dodge, like an explosions of sorts. But it looks like he’s swatting a fly. It doesn’t look like a summoning at all. The only reason we can dodge it, is because we’ve memorized to do so. That is not good boss design.
You played GW1, right? That game had bad tells. You went to cast a spell on the Mesmer Stygian Lord in DoA? LOLJK it just hit you with Cry of frustration which has a 1/4 second cast time and killed you.
GW1 had visible skill/attack icons to make up for a complete lack of boss tells. But even then, the skill effects them selves were sometimes very bad. Like chaos storm for example, which looked like a tiny sparkle on the ground, while in fact it was a very painful area of effect attack.
If GW2 had attack icons underneath the healthbars of bosses, we would not be having this discussion. But all they have is active effects, boons and conditions.

According to http://www.gw2db.com/skills/14977-firy-blast there is some sort of icon associated with the attack. Interestingly enough, he has this icon under his name when you run down to the platform. You can see it pretty clearly in this video I have: http://youtu.be/mGJylZBKmos

If they kick you inside a dungeon, its because of poor performance. I run longbow (or s/d)/gs full zerker with drake/cat(or wolf depending) and have yet to get a complaint. I’ve had people compliment me for something as simple as circling around a boss and timing GS dodges for 30 seconds while the other party member ressed the people who died. Its because people look at rangers and sigh because of what a noobtrap class we are. Easy to level, someone who looks at trailers are going to think we’re cool because we have a pet, people think we’re supposed to be snipers, etc. When you play well everyone is glad to have you, but when you play badly they don’t want you.
You are really better suited just to stand still only move when you need to dodge. Running in circles around a boss creates unnecessary clutter and is pretty irritating to a lot of people.
Lava frac. Standing still isn’t a good idea
You didn’t even comprehend what I wrote.
Not sure if you comprehended..
I was the only one on the boss and was tanking the damage in the lava fractal, the other person alive was ressing the people who got themselves wiped. Circling around the boss was the only thing that kept me from melting to burning. Why tank damage when you get away with minimal movement and dodge the Agony arrows? If you were also “tanking” his damage, you probably had on loads of Toughness and Vitality, the Fractal level was probably low, and in a case like that, being the one who survived by leeching from the party doesn’t make you the hero the party deserves.
I was full zerker, timing dodges and finishers in my water combo field. Not sure why you’re going on about me doing the wrong thing, it was the best thing to do at the time unless I felt like getting the other person killed.
Now you talk about wearing Berserker’s gear and dodging. You previously said “tanking the damage.” You don’t tank damage in Berserker’s gear. You’d also be better suited to drag the boss away from the person reviving and the people that are dead instead of circling around him.
Did he fail? No. Did he let down his group? No. Did his group praise him for his success and his ability to hold the boss while they were brought back since THEY did fail? Yes.
Why are you arguing bullkitten concepts of how you think it should be done? No one actually cares, because he did good. How exactly is anything you have to say here relevant when he succeeded and gained the admiration of his group in the process?
I get that you seem to feel you’re some sort of authority on how to play a Ranger, but when someone isn’t struggling and in fact doing well for the class, I think your “services” in that regard are neither needed, nor appreciated.
I feel I’m some authority on Ranger? No, not really. And if you are going to make remarks about how no one cares, you don’t understand what it means not to care.
Youtube Channel – http://www.youtube.com/t3llularman
I can’t reply anymore for fear of breaking my desk with my head. Guild Wars 2 has no problem with boss tells, people have problems seeing them because they want to tank, don’t care about looking for them, want to range and are never in melee to learn them, or any number of other reasons. The tells could instantly become 1000% more obvious to people if Anet took ranged weapons out of the game.

A boss fight like that should involve loads of trial and error. If not, there is no learning and there is no challenge. If people want hand-holding and don’t want to improve as players, they can fight Champions in Queensdale. It’s not an issue of bad design, it’s an issue of bad players not wanting to get better.
That is where you are wrong. Trial and error isn’t learning. Trial and error game play is memorizing.
To learn an encounter, it has to first be more complicated than simply tank and spank. It should require a strategy. You can memorize anything, and it would still not make you a better player. A good boss fight forces players to adapt/change their normal fighting strategy. It forces them to understand the mechanics involved. A good, but simple, example of that is Simin. You have to lure the wisps, and then hit her as hard as you can. The wisp-aspect is an added mechanic that you can figure out, and they coordinate.
Or take the two bosses in Molten Facility. Though by no means a required strategy, many players formed the strategy to switch targets whenever one of the two became enraged. The telegraphing of all the moves is crystal clear, but you still need to use your dodge well, manage aggro, and coordinate this strategy with your team. It did not come down to trial and error. You just had to be good at it. No trial and error required. Plus the dungeon even explained all the boss mechanics during the dungeon itself (such as the shock waves you can jump over). That is good design.
Wisps!? Do you mean Sparks? Do you think that Simin doesn’t involve trial and error to learn? Trial and error, experimentation, dying over and over trying to figure out what’s happening… Those are all wonderful forms of learning that will actually make you improve. Molten Facility was a huge hand-holding festival designed to baby bad players and people that complain about skipping mobs. The bosses in Molten Facility required you to stand still underneath them and attack them free from AoE. How is that a good design? It’s not. It’s catering to people that don’t want to improve and would rather have something easy to do, as is most of the Living Story experience. I don’t suppose you though Canach’s Lair was well-designed, too?
Youtube Channel – http://www.youtube.com/t3llularman
bosses should have totally random attacks that are not telegraphed or next to impossible to see coming. That would make boss fights much more difficult and we wouldn’t see anyone posting solo vids of how cool they are dishing and dodging. The fights would totally weigh heavily on how well a group of players play together.
That’s artificial difficulty. You can make any boss fight hard, by making the attacks random, unpredictable, hard to read, and instant-kill. But that doesn’t make it a good boss battle. That doesn’t even make it challenging. It makes it trial and error, and that is bad design.
For the record, I have no difficulty dodging that summon-grub move that Lupi does, but that’s because I know what it looks like, and know from watching videos what it does. That is still no excuse, it’s bad design. You could make that move obvious as hell, and it would still be the same fight. The only difference would be that it no longer requires trial and error. You would be able to recognize the move as dangerous on your first try.
Boss fights should be challenging because they require good timing, coordination and strategy. Not because they require fore-knowledge of what the dangerous attacks look like. A good boss fight is crystal clear on the very first attempt, and should only be deadly due to your own lack of skill.
A boss fight like that should involve loads of trial and error. If not, there is no learning and there is no challenge. If people want hand-holding and don’t want to improve as players, they can fight Champions in Queensdale. It’s not an issue of bad design, it’s an issue of bad players not wanting to get better.

I’m glad you can melee him now.

Someone mentioned that in Mumble a week or so ago as well. I’ve personally seen it.

My biggest concern is Arah P4 might only give a measly 3 gold instead of 10g and a chance at rare skins.
It’s possible to make more than 10g within 2 hours. Considering Arah P4 takes 3-4 hours, I don’t think a 10g reward is that bad.
Path 4 takes 20-30 minutes with superhero speedrunners.
Can I run with you? Please? Pretty please? :|
Probably not, but you can learn our tactics, form your own group of farmers, and then farm it on your own. This video may help you: http://youtu.be/edcRz-WaszM

Interestingly enough, the one time I’ve encountered the “Only 5 seconds to DPS her” bug was trying the 4-1 the day the patch came through that addressed her healing. We let her heal after putting the 4 sparks in, she came out, we put 1 spark in, it didn’t work, we ran them normally but it prolonged the spark run, and we only had a few seconds to dps her since it was sort of panic mode. It still only took about 5 phases to kill her though.

I guess maybe the key here is to make sure you run the sparks before the 60-65% mark or else she will revert back to stage 1.
If she reverts to stage 1, she will again stealth at the 50% mark no matter how long it has been, even if that is only a few seconds? Makes a little more sense.
An endless cycle of stage 1 -> stage 2 -> stage 1 if you are not fast enough with the sparks.
I think the information about the phases resetting at around the 60% mark is the key here and is missing from a lot of guides/tutorials.
Seems like if your party doesn’t have high enough DPS, the best strategy is to DPS her to 50%, pull four sparks and place them into place while leaving the fifth alone, let her regen up to 75% and reset, then DPS her to 50%, run last spark, DPS her like crazy so she has no chance of regenerating up to 60% (Strategy is listed in the wiki).
Thanks for all the useful videos and posts. A true vet giving back.
The 4-1 method hasn’t worked for months. The only way to succeed with this fight is finesse in Spark pulling.

So, once phase 2 starts at the 50% mark you will be working with the 45 second window.
If you are slow with the sparks, and Simin’s health reaches 60-65% range again, she reverts back to phase 1 and nulifies the 45 second window?
Then once you get her to 50% again to start phase 2, the window ‘may’ be screwed up due to the reset?
She resets at 75% due to not running sparks, fight goes on as normal.

I’m not trying to beat a dead horse or anything, but watching that video it seems that they do a 30 second (roughly) spark pull to replicate the issue. If they do a 30 second spark pull and only have 3 seconds to DPS, that doesn’t add up to the 45 second window they should have had?
I must be missing something here, or it is just not clicking in my brain yet. If you are supposed to have a 45 second window how is a 30 second spark pull followed by a 3 second DPS window (around 33 seconds total, not 45) not a bug?
She goes back into phase one around 60-65% health it seems. This was something I picked up on while making that video and the one I had made before it. She resets completely if she heals to 75% health.

I wonder if there’s a possibility to solo him disguised as mini quaggan.
Brazil pro quaggan?
Hmmmmm….. I’ll see what I can do.
