I know ArenaNet has added new Healing skills, and was curious if they are planning on adding new weapon skills.

The way it would work would be analogous to a utility skill slot on a weapon. For example, when you equip Greatsword, you have 2 different #3 skills to choose from, or the like.

I think it could be a good way to increase build variety, if done right (huge qualifier there).

If so, I was wondering if ArenaNet was planning on making the game more balanced first, and if they were planning on providing better support for the weapon skills than they have for the new healing skills.

Any decent ele can heal or pop into water and get that 2k right back. Once he’s back over 90% he becomes immune again. So you really need to do a lot more than 2k damage to keep the conditions sticking.

Going to agree about that. Last 2 weeks or so I’ve noticed q times are horrid, matchmaking is kitten (my last round was 500-10 other team had a rank 13 10 and a 5…) and people are just kittened. I don’t remember the last foefire round where people defended mid after it was capped. I keep getting free full caps on mid idk why…

Honestly, I believe right now that the community could collectively balance the game faster and better than ANet could, if Anet put knobs into custom arenas to allow players to adjust the parameters for skills and traits.

The OP is right as a general rule. In order for it to work, either:

1) your near bunker has to be able to get to mid fast and your far runner has to be able to hold his own against their near bunker

or

2) You have 3 bunker-y players going to mid

Pvp is not about duels. Check pvp forums to see common opinions on thieves.

And empirical evidence from “common opinions” isn’t any better. Unless someone pulls numerical facts about how the thief has an overall mathematical advantage, I can only write L2P statements, because tourneys right now are not thief meta, but warriors winning tPvP.

Metas now all run thief as roamer. Not ele, not mesmer, not engineer. That’s because the thief is the alpha predator for that role.

The top 3 Mesmers all quit and rerolled thief. That should tell you something.

Take a look at the posts around here…

If I were the devs, I certainly wouldn’t be in any hurry to serve up any new content for the entitled jerks that believe it’s their right to constantly berate the company giving them free updates on their $60 game.

If I were a dev, I wouldn’t have an ounce of motivation to quickly provide additional content.

Because at the end of the day, they only thing they’ll get in return from the community is more complaints and more finger pointing.

If you were a dev with an attitude like that, you would have been thrown to the curb toot sweet.

Justin has always struck me as a guy that has nothing to hide. I’m guessing his work product is high quality, with few issues. But, he’s working in a box. And while his work in that box is probably excellent, I’m guessing the problems lie outside that box.

Justin, I understand the player base can be frustrating. However, I don’t believe we are myopic. The problems are real. The lack of progress is real. The lack of communication is real. I don’t see how that can be construed as being myopic.

That “looking forward” contained a roadmap. And it did make promises. There were no dates, just a huge window. A six month window. And, somehow, something went awfully wrong and very little of what was forecast was implemented over those six months.

How could something go so horribly wrong that major milestones were missed by up to a full six months? And what does it say about ArenaNet if they were not able to communicate these changes to their customers over those 6 months?

I’ve managed large software tasks with large teams ($15m+ USD yearly budgets). I know how to lay down a schedule and manage a budget. I’ve never laid down a plan so aggressive that I miss 50% of my milestones in a 6 month window. Whenever I believe I am going to slip a milestone, I immediately let my management and customers know and replan.

This is why we don’t like sharing dates. I know you’re waiting on things, and the wait is driving me crazy too, but saying we made promises when we clearly did not does not help get the content out sooner.

If you want greater transparency, like I do, then you must accept that dates, features, and plans are not a static promise. Things can happen to shift priorities, dates, or designs, causing things to changed, be pushed back, or accelerated.

Please stop.

People don’t want greater transparency. They want applicable, measured updates in a reasonable time frame. Sensotix has a right to be upset. He’s been one of the biggest advocates for PvP in this game, and the lack of timely updates and broken meta (cheese meta) has soured his opinion. That’s not his fault.

Take a look – warriors are broken and the community knows it. The Balance Team, however, thinks they are fine. Thieves make all other berserker builds and all other roamer builds non-viable. The Balance Team, however, thinks they are fine.

Changes don’t arrive every couple of weeks. Rather they arrive every 4-5 months. !!! That’s insane. Take a look at League of Legends. They push balance fixes out every 2 weeks.

GW2 is supposed to be a AAA MMO. It is self-proclaimed. So, why shouldn’t the community expect the same quality and quantity of maintenance as in a AAA MMO?

The bottom line: there is no reason why the PvP community should not expect reasonable balance changes made to the game every 2 weeks. If such a reason does exist, it should be the imperative of ArenaNet to remove that reason.

As a mesmer main, this is a horrible idea. Mesmer is already viewed as a low skill class thanks to builds like PU running around, make it even more brainless and we might as well be renamed to warrior.

That may be, but it’s not viable. HS warriors are are a low-skill class and what is the story with them? Double warrior metas and an 8% HS nerf.

You tell me: Do you think ANet is raising the skill floor or lowering it?

I’m ok with that! After talking with really good Mesmers and participating/watching a lot of tournaments I feel like what the two posters above me and I are saying is pretty close to reality, currently.

I’m aware of the fact that Mesmers have a hard time to deal with the meta (our core Mesmer rerolled to Thief too). Totally agree with you here.

Marionette was not zergy. Great Jungle Wurm is not zergy. Tequatl is not zergy. Tower of Nightmares was not zergy. 1200 Citizen runs in LA content are not zergy (in fact, being zergy ruins the 1200 run for your entire server). Very few dungeon encounters are tank and spank group zergs. Queens gauntlet was not zergy. Aetherblade retreat was not Zergy. New TA path was not zergy. And that is only combat. There is a ton out there to do exploration wise or solo, and there is a healthy portion of the playerbase that enjoys that style of content.

Re-read. I excepted Marionette.

Great Jungle worm and Tequatl have a handful of mechanics combined with a massive DPS race. Tower of Nightmares was most definitely zergy. Nightmare Within was zergy. Lost Shore was zergy. Flame and Frost was zergy. Southsun was zergy. Clockwork Chaos was zergy. Queen’s gauntlet was broken.

Very few dungeon encounters are tank and spank group zergs.

What I don’t understand is how the PVE in this game is more profitable for ArenaNet than the WvW or the PvP?

The PVE in this game is not good. Open world content is nothing more than a massive zerg-fest. Orr has too much trash and not enough waypoints. The Zhaitan was a massive disappointment. Optimally running dungeons means you focus on maximizing dps, stacking and leashing. The Living World, with the shining exceptions of SAB, Halloween and Marionette, have all been zergy disappointments.

I can easily find many MMO’s that have better PVE content: Wow, LOTRO, Rift, etc.

However, the WvW and PvP in GW2 are different. WvWvW content – large maps to explore, huge fights, small skirmishes, etc. It’s better than any of its current competition. PvP has fluid combat and good balance.

But, ArenaNet has let WvW and PvP flounder. If they invested the time and energy into WvW and PvP instead of PVE and LW, they’d have the best world and team-based PvP in any MMO, ever. It had so much potential – and it’s simply being squandered.

Instead of having lousy PVE and outstanding WvW and PvP, we have a game with mediocre PVE, WvW and PvP.

I would say after March 18th is very much inline with that definition. Especially if one consider that they have confirmed that it will be released this year.
Which would make the planned time-frame between 14/3-31/12.

Where did they confirm it was this year? Was that the same place they confirmed it was coming the 18th of March?

Finally, are you serious? You may think an 8 month time-frame is acceptable, but I surely do not. If I had a contractor give me an 8 month window on when to expect my house to be finished, I’d fire him on the spot.

Gentlemen, this is a public relations debacle on Anet’s part. Yet they defend themselves instead of being forthright with the community. C’mon Anet! Your goose is cooked! What’s wrong with giving us an expected time range for the upcoming feature release?The community is in a uproar and hiding behind the veil won’t help. The mob must be appeased. If only Anet can offer clear, transparent communication instead of cloak and dagger terminology (“maintenance build,” “after living story”).

No, ArenaNet did not provide a time frame. What ArenaNet did is specify when they would not be providing the balance patch. For all you know, that patch could come in October of 2311.

A time frame would have been acceptable.

But that’s not even the core of the problem. The core of the problem is that it takes TOO LONG to push out balance patches. If the team pushed out fixes every couple of weeks, the player base wouldn’t be too worried that some of the big fixes were going to take months.

There would be progress.

They have, what, 3-4 guys working on the balance team? Take 2 of them and give them the task of pushing small adjustments out with every 2 week update (i.e. nerfs to HS). The other two can work on longer-term changes, like the Sigil stuff and Ele/Ranger redesign.

They’re getting paid the same regardless, so it’s not like there’s a cost increase.

Because if they don’t have a plan, they are grossly incompetent. Are you suggesting they are grossly incompetent?

These things change and if they say it releases on date X when in fact they have to postpone it until x+1, can you imagine how annoyed people will be?

Do you think there is a possibility of giving something other than a particular day? Perhaps a range that has both a begin date and an end date. March-April is better than “sometime after today”, which is basically what they’ve said.

You defend ANet at every turn. Uou cannot look at the situation rationally and recognize they really dropped the ball in terms of communication with the community. Are you some kind of shill for ArenaNet?

Personally I just play super casual now. There is no need anymore to care for something in which they clearly do not have the resources to care in return. Just expect the worst and you won’t be let down. Find another game to fill the time, until A-net catches up, if ever.

No idea when to expect balance updates. No idea when to expect PvP reward updates.

This has been the problem for over a year.

Regardless, these questions should be addressed by a member of ANET.

Except they really can’t answer them at the moment because they are caught in a lose/lose situation.

When it comes to the new rewards, the real question is how long are we going to be without rewards? That is really what we are asking. In reality, anything over a week will upset people. Over a month will cause a number of people to become upset. Lets face it, if they say May, that means at least 6 weeks without any rewards for pvping. Meanwhile WvW will be rewarded for their server populations. That’s going to upset a good number of the few remaining spvpers. They can’t win here because there should be no downtime for rewards. That is the real issue. That is the reason people keep asking for confirmation that nothing else is happening with the patch.

As for balance, that is a separate team. It is also separate from the pvp update. Yes, it needs to happen. However, it’s just something that’s being added to the conversation to show that players are upset that pvp still has nothing coming.

The questions proposed are a trick to trap the devs into admiting the issue. In reality, we just need them to hold off on the removal of rewards until the new system is ready. Of course we also need spvp updates to actually start happening.

And who’s fault is that?

ArenaNet says Guild Wars 2 is a AAA MMO. It’s only fair to compare it against other AAA MMOs.

Allie’s argument was poor – a new MMO should be able to leverage all of the best practices from other MMO’s, as well as learn from the mistakes of predecessors. In principle, there is no reason why GW2 shouldn’t be superior to WoW in terms of processes and QoL issues.

Instead it’s woefully behind its contemporaries in these regards: communication, frequency of patches, quality control, PvE balance, management of expectations.

Then ArenaNet mentioned the next patch after the end of the first Living World season is March 18th.

It’s a natural assumption to make: the balance patch comes after LW Season 1 ends. The next patch after LW Season 1 is March 18.

It’s not the community’s fault here: that’s really poor communication and poor management of expectations.

Custom arena controls don’t permit me to prevent a HS warrior from joining, but they do permit me to kick/ban people who do.

The issue with decap engi is that it is way too easy to play given its effectiveness. That plus all of the healing makes it over the top right now

Regardless, ANET has already said they are taking a look at this spec, so I wouldn’t expect it to last for long.

Well, I don’t think ANet is going to redesign the class at this stage. That’s an issue you handle during prerelease alpha.

Mesmers are not designed around large group fights. However, they aren’t viable as a roamer now and lack the sustain to bunker or group fight.

I agree with the OP. HS’s passive heal should have a completely passive component, and a more active component which requires some effort.
For example:
– 65% of the heal is passive
– 35% of the heal comes from landing non-burst attacks

This means the HS is as effective, and in some cases moreso, as it is today when the warrior is wailing away and hitting someone. This means damage avoidance (reflects, dodges, blinds, etc) would reduce the warrior’s healing effectiveness. Additionally it would make warriors give more consideration as to when they should use their defensive cooldowns and when they should disengage and leave.

This would also allow ANet to rebalance/boost the active heal.

Really, when you consider it, such a change would change warriors from a broken profession to a balanced profession with a much higher skill ceiling. Skilled warriors would still dominate nearly as well today, but there would be good counterplay.

I think this is mostly on the devs at this point.
People keep making threads, inciting discussion, brainstorming and the like but its all generally rather one sided.

yeah mesmer community has a lot of ideas, not all good, but a ton of suggestions:

for mimic there were a bunch of good ideas
for mantras many suggested reworking them into groundtarget aoes or something like this
scepter was discussed
swiftness was discussed
and all the issues u mentioned above, i experiance too, but even worse in wvw raids. nowadays if your veil is not perfect, u are a bad mesmer….because thats all we have to offer in wvw. veil and tw…

now we get downstate changes….o.0
the expected nerf to clone death traits
swiftness nerf on tc 50%
mimic not really made useful, followed by a massive cooldown…
swiftness on chaosarmor….
tw cd reduction
bug fixes that havent even been mentioned

all this apart from tw change shows me the devs havent read any of the suggestions and dont see the mesmers problem. i say it again, we lack aoe and the ones jumping in now saying no we got berserker and we got this phantasm…no we lack ao as a kitten light armor class because illusions die in ergs. we got no options to use groundtargeted aoes apart from chaosstorm.
chaosstorm is an aoe wich i love and this is what mesmers would need more in order to have something to offer in wvw. i fight in outnumbered situations where a smaller group does zergbusting and i experience the issues of the ai and no groundtarget aoe a lot more than someone who is in a giant zerg spaming 111 or a roamer.
my role is to veil on time and tw. that the only reason im on my mesmer when running with them. otherwise i go necro or ele.
utilitybot is not fun, but anet doesnt see that problem, but i experiance this every day. veilbot duty is pressure.
anet seems happy with the mesmer as they only see it in the duelists light, we give them inputs about how we experience the mesmer, but it gets ignored. since glamour nerf the wvw mesmer started to fall to the bottom of the bottoms, right next to the ranger.
oh well time to reroll i guess. too many bugs and no help for my game mode. hmm maybe dust off my ele and finish my warrior and main my necro. at least i have aoe and not ai.

As stated at the beginning, this isn’t to talk about the leaked balance patch notes, which we now know are not true (really good fake notes, however)!

I’d still like to know what roles Mesmers have. If Mesmers are to be roamers, then they need to stand on a competitive footing with thieves. This means:
– more out of combat mobility
– better defenses against (or better counters to) thieves
– a different way to spike aside from shatter-spike

If they are to have a role as group support, then they need:
– more reliable access to protection and/or
– more reliable access to vigor outside of critical strike damage
– Phantasms that don’t melt in AoE damage

I think we have enough conditions from AA in the game already. How about something very simple, and very straight-forward:

Scepter Auto Attack: Ether Blast removed. Ether Bolt and Ether Clone damage scaling increased 15%. Clones created by Ether Clone attack with 33% of the Mesmer’s Attack Power.

What does this mean? This means the Scepter AA chain is a 2-hit chain that spawns a clone every 1.5 seconds, and the clones hit hard compared to normal clones. On a typical condition build, the clones hit for around 100-120 damage each attack. On a power build they hit for like 200 / attack.
