For the majority of Living Story instances only one extra person is required to be able to make it through without much trouble. In fact the only part of the living story where the wife and myself (we ran it all as a duo) required help was the final battle with Zhaitan and if we were running different stories/races as in the beginning we ran those solo until the stories merged.

The one question I would have asked with regards to “how pretty the art is” is that if the pretty artwork is a driving force behind many of their decisions why not implement DX11 support versus the archaic DX9 thus letting peoples’ graphic cards determine how pretty the world is?

HUH? Siege Disabler that disables enemy siege

in WvW

Posted by: Theftwind.8976

Theftwind.8976

The root of the issue is in the poor design of towers and keeps and rather then fixing the flaws they add more gimmicks. Siege placed on a wall is easily taken out by a large zerg with no threat to them whatsoever. Cannons and oils can be taken out by standing against the wall where you are “obstructed” from above. If you are defending you are forced to stand on the lip of the wall in order to target the enemy but the enemy can aoe you anyplace on that wall. With the proper siege mastery any outer keep wall can be opened up before the swords pop which hurts smaller servers. Now add to all of that the issue with arrow carts and FOV manipulation or with the problems involved with placing ballistas on the walls where they can do some good and you can see the design flaws. It is interesting to note that the elite skill with ballista mastery is practically useless unless you are firing point blank, straight into an enemy zerg. Any elevation advantage and the arrow spread goes into the air.

So now they want to add a siege disabler. Think about the above design flaws and then on where a defender would have to stand to “throw” that disabler. Yep, on the edge of the lip or he will be obstructed but if he stands on the lip he will be yanked into the zerg below. Yet the attacker can easily stand below and toss the disabler up especially if it works in the same way as grenades do now.

Fix design flaws before adding gimmicks or it will just end up making things worse then they are now.

Siege Golem Mastery

in WvW

Posted by: Theftwind.8976

Theftwind.8976

Sadly any changes that have been made to WvW and the upcoming golem mastery have done nothing for defending an objective and everything for taking one. If you make it easier to take down walls/doors/siege then it is now then what incentive is there to upgrade anything? It is just going to become a karma train as EotM is now.

We have been asking for design changes in tower and keep walls that will allow defenders to hit attackers without getting the “obstructed” message. We have been asking for wider walls that would allow siege placement out of the range of attacking AOE’s. Ballistas are still useless on the walls, cannons are too easily taken out and arrow carts still abuse the FOV and can hit anywhere inside a structure. Add to all of that the target cap with siege staying at 5.

You cannot make WvW fun by placing all the emphasis and upgrades on the attacking side unless they are trying to emulate EotM and not everyone finds EotM fun.

/laugh

in WvW

Posted by: Theftwind.8976

Theftwind.8976

/laugh can really make me laugh at times. Take for instance about a week or so ago, the wife and myself protecting a tower against a breakout and 6 enemies. They failed and we laughed. So they start another bo but bring about 4 more people, and failed again. Now they were really upset so they came back with well over a dozen so we /laughed again and recalled. After all it was a paper tower!

I will use the /laugh emote up in the north camp when it is being camped by the enemy but they are too stupid to realize that the corners by the gate are invuln spots. They are so consumed with bloodlust that they charge in for a supposedly easy kill and die. That is worth a /laugh.

/laugh is great to use against NIKES who think they are stronger/better but run once their health starts to drop. Laughing at them will bring them back to the fight.

finally I will /laugh against those that think they are good enough to take on two or three solo and fail and fail and fail again, especially thieves.

Oh, almost forgot. I love using the /laugh emote on one of my Asurans just because it is so funny!

A matter of archetypes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Theftwind.8976

I would prefer magic over tech. Magic according to most literature has to be harnessed within the magic user before it can be used. It is a part of the caster whereas tech can be easily set aside making it less personal. For example Thor is a creature of magic and is always Thor whereas Iron Man, when he sets aside the armor is just Tony Stark.

In GW2 catch a mesmer asleep and they would wake up and be able to fight because the magic is part of them. Catch an engineer in bed and he would have to fumble around to gather up his tech before putting up a resistance.

How did we _Actually_ Kill Zhaitan?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Theftwind.8976

Theftwind.8976

Tech > Magic

Technology is greater then magic only because anyone can use technology but not everyone has the ability to understand and use magic. If magic existed in today’s real world it would follow the same pattern. Everyone can pick up a can opener and open a can of beans but only a few would be able to open that can with magic.

Technology is used as a bridge to place non-magical users on an equal footing. However to state that in GW2 technology is greater then magic might be an erroneous assumption. If it were then we would not have the need to embody our armor and weapons with magic. Plus we had the advantage of numbers using both technology and magic to take out one Elder Dragon.

Interesting! Someone decided to change the title of the thread for me. I surmise that asking ANET directly for a response to an ongoing issue is forbidden so they were forced to sanitize the thread. My bad, I will not be doing that again. It does bring up another question however. What are these forums for? If it is only to discuss things between players then that has been done in-game countless of times with no consensus.

After re-reading the CoC I suppose it falls under.

After seeing it mentioned once more on the forums in a thread that disappeared for another reason I would like to know an answer, one way or the other on the issue of rezzing downed players through the gates of keeps/towers. We have had discussions in-game on it to no end, some saying it is a cheat, others saying it is not due to the fact the players could/should pull you away from gate before killing you. Out of all the times it has been asked about in the past I have never seen a definitive answer from ANET on the subject and I do think one is required.

Is this a legitimate strategy or is it abusing an inherent flaw in the game design?

Open world dueling and the ability to inspect other’s gear adds less good to the game and more unsavory elements such as elitism and harassment. As well in WvW if you know before the fight begins that the runes/sigils your opponent is using and his gear set up you can easily avoid the fight or gank him or change your gear accordingly. Game breaking tactics in WvW!

Theftwind.8976

I get a chuckle out of some Guilds that think they are so good by camping the north camp. On both sides of the gate, in the corner, there is a small invuln spot. If I go to the ncamp with my engie as a solo only to find multiple ballistas and acs up and a goon squad outside the door I drop down to that spot. I cannot begin to count how many wannabee ubers, intent on taking out everything in their sight, that I have downed by dropping my turrets and my supply crate while they vainly try to slaughter me. I am not stupid enough to try to take such a camp solo but they seem to be lacking a bit of grey matter, especially when they run around the corner and into my flamethrower. Now I am only one person facing perhaps 6 or more in a sieged camp that belongs to them. They want to farm me……I farm them. Eventually they get smart (most of them anyway) and leave me alone.

Now I do not do that for every guild that tries to camp the north but for those that think killing me as I come out of the gate with a ballista and arrow cart and then laughing and dancing on me thinking they have accomplished something totally awesome then turn about is fair play.

New Keep/Garrison Upgrade

“Players attempting to access the Supply Depot without permission will be given a quick shock, and a small amount of damage or blindness.”

So on a claimed structure where the guild that claimed it and installed the electric fence is no longer online the fence will stay active not allowing the night crew access to the supply? I do not think that would go over very well.

One change they should make which would fix a few issues is to make a second/higher inner wall that siege can be placed on out of reach of AOE’e from players. The inner section would not have the railing/edge on it which would also solve the problems with ballista placement.

Mark, I have a possible solution. The majority of people think that because a thread/post receives no Developer feedback that the Devs have abandoned this forum. I do understand your position in that they do not have the time to reply to every post although they do read many. Currently you identify the posts that a Developer has replied in with a red flag. Perhaps you can add a different color flag that will inform the public on whether or not the thread has been read and taken into consideration even though there is no reply? At that point a reply would not be totally necessary as long as we know that someone has viewed our concerns. Currently there is way of knowing.

Just a thought.

Edit: I thought it over and refined it.

Let us say we have 3 threads concerning
1) Mounts
2) New maps
3) Arrow cart field of view

If the developer team has no interest in working on Mounts in the foreseeable future flag the thread gray. If it is under consideration such as new maps but pushed out until time permits flag it yellow. If it is currently under development/in process such as arrow carts ( okay I am hoping ) but with no ETA then flag it green. The current red flag can be left automated as it is now when a Dev posts in a thread. The other 3 can be a toggle for developers only that they can click on accordingly.

It may even clear up many repetitive threads!

A good portion of my time is spent solo roaming. I will re-cap camps, sentries and if I see a tower or keep that requires taking I will drop a cata on the wall and build it myself then call in the crew if and when I get the wall down. For an example I did that a couple weeks back while our zerg was over retaking our Hills. I dropped and built a cata at our Bay Worm gate and had it open and ready for the main crew. I tend to do that with my mesmer so I can slip inside and hide in case the crew does not get there immediately.

I have an issue with how Mark worded that sticky post.

“Due to the rash of necroposting on this subforum, anybody caught posting in a dead thread will be subject to infractions and possible suspensions from this point forward.
A dead thread is defined as any thread that has not received any posts in more than 30 days.”

A clarification is required here. First it states that anyone caught posting in a dead thread will be punished. Then it defines the thread as a post that has not received any posts in more then 30 days.

My question is, if someone resurrects a dead thread and I happen to post in that thread after it has been resurrected am I under threat of punishment? After all someone must have posted before me to resurrect the thread. Also what happens if someone resurrects such a thread and deletes his post after other people have posted on it? Would he get away and all others be punished?

Teach me how to solo camps

in WvW

Posted by: Theftwind.8976

Theftwind.8976

I have solo’d camps with my Guardian, Mesmer, Engineer, Thief and Ranger and grouping things up is not always the best solution depending on how your character is spec’d and what character you have on at the time. It also pays to check first if the camp is upgraded or if they have just caravan guards ordered with no place to go (no towers/keeps in that BL). If it is your best option is to pull and kill the scouts first. They are the biggest pain. If it has caravan guards focus the yaks and the extra guards/scouts will poof out.

Gathering them up works well with my Guardian and Engie, pulling works better with my Mes,Thief and Ranger. With a Ranger you can sit back, let your pet have the agro and cycle your pet out before it is totally out of health.

Out of all the camps in the Borderlands the NE one is the easiest to solo and with my Guardian I will have the camp in capping mode before the swords pop. I will drag everything to the spot between the supply hut and rock, drop wall of reflection, call up the Hounds of Balthazar and kill them all. Doing this the supervisor stays back and will be the only NPC left alive. All camps have some variation on this, just plan first before attacking.

Edit: I solo camps all the time. It frees up the main group to recap towers/keeps. I suppose on the more heavily populated servers taking a camp solo may not be the best option but on lower populated servers or in times where coverage is scant it only makes sense to solo camps. Why send 20 to a job that one person can do in the same amount of time>

Can you ever reach that point? Tomorrow is the “near future” but so is next week, next month and if you take the word future over a long enough span of years 100 years can be considered the “near future” as well.

It was well worded satire and you have the same chance of killing those one million yaks that you do to reach the “near future”.

Guilds in WvW whonever put on a commander tag

in WvW

Theftwind.8976

There are Commanders and I will call them Commanders that know what they are doing and I will follow them readily.

There are also those that think they are Commanders but make such boneheaded mistakes, refuse to listen to advice from anyone that is not a member of their guild or who will come in at the tail end of something leading their train and take credit for your hard work that I will not follow.

Those are the ones that whine if you are not on TS (and face it, not everyone can be on TS), whine if you do not immediately rally to their tag even if you are busy doing something else, lead their sheep to defend something then run off elsewhere with everyone having full supply but not repairing anything and run down anyone not in their Guild or group. Those type of Commanders may as well leave their tag at home as they have not earned the privilege of having me follow them.

As an example I will go back to just a few days following the last tournament. We were being pressed at our NW tower with only pugs/militia defending and called for help. There were 4 Commanders on our map “training” up in centaurs with their tags up and their guild. Four tags! One of theses so called Commanders called for “everyone to come to my tag” in map chat versus coming to help at the tower and in the end we lost that tower. After I complained about it I was told “it was just a joke, that they were busy training, a T3 tower was of no concern to them and to kitten”. There is no way in hell I would follow any of them no matter how big their guild is.

They do not or are not supposed to. That is why I am having difficulty figuring this out. The camp was ours, in our BL, with no NPC’s around. The fight happened up just inside the ne gate of the north camp where we intercepted the group running in. Again there would be no NPCs around. It did drop when we put down one of the attackers because as I was about to stomp him a thief got me and downed me. I saw the chest at that point just as they stomped me. So it HAD to have dropped from the enemy player we downed. The only NPC that would drop badges would be the Supervisor but again the camp and Supervisor was ours.

It’s also not always the best way to be successful to zerg everything like in EoTM.

Sometimes the Commanders get wrapped up in their own self importance and the people follow blindly. I had my mesmer hidden in our Bay once and advertised a few times in chat that I was hidden and ready to port people in. I saw the dorito approach the Wurm gate and moved to position, took out the archer on the top, and stood there and watched as they furiously dropped 3 superior rams and built them to take the outer gate down. I dropped a portal, dropped down and set the second, and had 2 out of about 20 people take it. Never laughed so hard.

Now due to a low bandwidth ISP (living in the boonies) I could not run TS but found it fascinating that only 2 out of 20 bothered to read map chat and pick up on the portal although they read it when the Commander said “build left to right” “masters on rams” “take out the cannons”. So I scurry back, the camp was saved and my steel chest was still there! Excitedly I opened it to get…..wait for it……wait….. 2 Badges and 2 Empyreal fragments!!!!!!! That was it! When the action on a BL is light there is no need for a tag. You see something that needs to be done and you do it. I stick to our home BL and represent our little guild of 2 people, the wife and myself. If there is a push on a keep or tower and they call for people I will go, tag or no tag. If there is a camp to flip I will flip it. If there is a tower to capture I will set up a cata myself and start hammering away, eventually people will come over or I map call for help when the wall is down.

Too many people are sheep and need the tag to be effective. I do not have a tag, neither does the wife but there are many times we will have half a dozen people following us because we do what needs to be done. If there is a ktrain running we normally avoid it and go capture camps or other objectives, set up siege, refresh when needed, repair as required. Do not put yourself in the position where you need to be told what to do, find things that need to be done and do it.

What bothers me is the bottlenecks that are in the system and a good example of this would be with linen. When the game was new there were people through all the zones and therefore all tiers of materials were being harvested. The market showed this quite clearly as the highest tier (area) that people were currently in equated to the highest price on the materials harvested in that area.

Currently there seems to be a lack of people harvesting linen, rugged leather, hardwood or mid tier materials and I would hazard to guess is that many people are skipping these areas and using Tomes of Knowledge and pushing past this point. Linen for example will drop in a 60-70 area such as Fireheart Rise but by that point in time anyone leveling an alt has the resources to skip the area altogether. I know, as I have 9 level 80’s and only 3 have Fireheart Rise mapped.

The more shortcuts that you put in place that allow rapid character progression to level 80 the more upside down the market becomes and it ends up with lower tiered items becoming more costly then higher tiered items.

My suggestion would be to make the drop rates in a given area/zone proportional to the average number of people frequenting that zone. (adjust it monthly)So if the Cursed Shore has on average more people then Frostforge Sound the drop rates for gossamer would be higher in Frostforge. Eventually the map populations would balance out and so would the materials.

Theftwind.8976

Are you talking about the optional dive goggles spot at the very top that has nothing to do with Living Story but is just an optional JP/dive point of the zone?

The Living Story is taking place in the zone, the zone isn’t the Living Story. The zone is a new zone. It will have diving goggles/JPs/POIs/Vistas like a normal zone. Do you complain about dive goggles in other zones? Probably not because they are optional as well.

Some of this content is meant to be hard for players with more skill. That’s why they make it optional. At no point in the Living Story do they tell you to get to the diving goggles, you don’t even have to go to the platform below the diving goggles in the Living Story.

Considering I require 1 more Dive point for Dive Master (World wide) and also considering that they tie Achievement points to such dive locations (Dive Master, Prospect Valley) is it truly optional? If they tie achievement points to eye/hand coordination is it fair to others that lack that twitch skill? If they want to make it truly optional then give a title for it without the achievement points.

Ok enough with the Aspects already as well as the ever present jump here to jump there to jump up to jump down. Not everyone is of the Mario generation and not everyone grew up on Sonic the Hedgehog. A Living Story where your skills are secondary to some skills picked up from finding crystals just does not appeal to me and in my opinion they are already well overdone.

Take for example the Dive Point in Dry Reach. To get to that point you have to be extremely quick with the keyboard/mouse combination and hope you can get tot the top before your Aspect runs out of charges. This is all fine and dandy for a Mario super achiever but for us aging folks with slower reflexes it is frustrating as all hell. What is wrong with having the character you decide to use in these Living stories use their own skills?

To put it bluntly I have given up on the Living Story for this episode. it is just not worth the aggravation to get the achievements.

With a business model such as ANET uses it is important for them to maximize their cash flow. They maintain that cash flow through gem purchases and through the sale of the initial game. The latter is a one time event only and as the game ages fewer copies will be sold so they have to keep those people that actually buy gems buying gems. Face it not every one does.

So gold sinks are a must and in every game I have ever played people will always find new and innovative ways to earn that gold. Some people are very good at that and can amass large amounts of gold without buying gems even if that entails spending your game time flipping items at the Trading Post. Other people can put in longer hours and actually play the game yet will never have more then 50 gold. ANET knows how much total gold is in the system and what the average amount of gold is per person playing the game and will adjust the drops, nerf farming spots, or restrict/lower the amount of gold entering the system to keep to a gold/person average. They have to in order to sell gems which is where their revenue flow comes from.

The is one issue I can see with it is that unless they make allowances is that over time it does have a bearing on how easily people can earn gold. Those players that can amass large amounts will stay in the game longer then a person that barely makes enough to get by. Over time those people that never seem to earn enough gold will leave the game and the average amount of gold/person ratio will go upwards. It is no different then real life where all the money is concentrated in the hands of 1% of the population. The economy in the game works in the same way. With all the gold sinks in place, the nerfed farm spots and the restrictions they placed on gold entering into the system those that cannot figure out ways to beat the system and amass large amounts are at a higher disadvantage.

How to fix things? I do not know. I do understand why they have to throttle the amount of gold going into the system but I do not know how it can be balanced so those people that have trouble earning that gold can be on the same playing field as those that understand and know how to beat the system.

I am not certain if I hear it correctly or not but I could swear my Asuran engie says “on your feet, kitten!”

The kitten would be a female dog…….

My guild consists of two people, the wife and myself but we pull our weight in WvW and work with the other guilds there for the Server and not to stoke our egos. WvW needs some loving but we do not need nor want to change the format to GvG. As I currently have 9 level 80’s that I use in WvW and no longer play the PvE side of the game the OP’s suggestion would essentially force me to leave the game.

Rank 698.
One ascended chest that garnered me a pistol for my Engie. I now get excited when I get a rare as I usually get green items.

Use one of these 2 links.

Check regularly to see if your designated colour for the week has the specific keep/tower on each map that you require for map completion. If not try again later and keep checking. If it does immediately go to WvW and grab that Poi. Rinse and repeat until all are done. The only time that this will not work is if your server is constantly dominated and always one colour.

For the skill points you may, depending on your level and skill require one other person to assist. For vistas not in towers/keeps you can easily get to them by watching and avoiding combat.

Oh quit complaining people! There are other achievements to get! A million yaks to kill, one million objectives to take, one million to defend. I estimate, since I am currently 59 that I will need to live to be just over 100 to be able to complete those, but I am retired so to hell with fishing, golfing, travelling, visiting grandchildren and stuff in the real world, I can do it!

Gw2 Expansion Confirmed?

It was stated above that NCsoft stock is undervalued. Dropping the hint of a possible expansion to analysts would be a good way to drive the price of the stock upwards. That a “possible” expansion has been hinted at before with an ever changing release date tells me that it is only market manipulation to drive the stock price up so I will not hold my breath on an expansion until an official announcement with a believable release date has been made. In other words do not make much ado about nothing!
