Prophesies was harsh, and tragic, and dark, and full of twists. By Grenth, we were the villains!
I never even played GW1 but I read up about this storyline, and it sounded amazing. I can’t imagine what it felt like to play the game back then when you finally realised you had been mislead the entire time, and doomed the lives of innocents.
That kind of storyline is what we need, something that basically takes everything you think you know and flips it on its head.
everything so far has been horribly predictable. I’m hoping that come the 20th its going to be something amazing, not just. “hi I’m scarlet and I’m the leader of the aetherblades, who setup up the molten alliance” This we have already predicted.
Tl;DR of the Tl;DR of the TL;DR
Fix living world to be a living world for heroes or I quit.
you should delete this, “I quit” threats don’t normally go down well.
+1 and due to the amount of threads about this I’m sure Anet is finally aware that another festival is not what we want.
All the living stories outside of the frost and flame were open and shut cases. F&F hinted at the end that someone else was involved from the city. Why they don’t do this more often is beyond me.
They need to work on how this story is delivered, and no more festival+festival is attacked. That is getting a bit weak now, tbh it wasn’t a very gripping story to begin with.
Konig, what are you doing? Just stop. You have more than made your point.
Actually the more he posts the sadder he looks. He’s like" I don’t give a skritts behind" then continues to rant on which just goes to show it really does bother him.
having WP as a NPC doesn’t hurt anyone, and a lot of the community would like to see it happen. Konig you’re coming across as a jealous child “It’s not fair, his lore is incorrect! he doesn’t deserve it!”
Konig where is your body of work since you pride yourself on GW lore so much? Perhaps that’s what you should focus on instead of trying to discredit WP so much.
Its a shame about the 2-3 that disagree since they also have some site up about GW1 lore and are jealous of not getting the same attention. They should of said nothing and instead focused on delivering more lore to the community, now all I think of them is a bunch of attention starved jealous crybabies. Such a shame.
I think you have a poor understanding of the scale of all the lore that the community has researched. And then one guy makes some videos about it, in which he cherry picks his favorite theories.
SO WHAT if he cherry picks his favourite theories, he doesn’t claim to be the ultimate source of GW lore. I (and a lot of other people) find his videos entertaining and informative. A lot of his videos are speculative and he’s also the first to admit that. He even calls some of them “rants.”
He comes up with interesting conclusions, and tries to piece together links. So far the stories in GW2 have been very boring, but because of his “what if” scenarios I now find them interesting.
His latest is on the reactor (which hasn’t even come out yet) and he’s put together a very, VERY interesting possibility.
And remember its not even him putting his name forward, its the community that have enjoyed his theories and would like to see him receive some kind of recognition within the game.
So if you think someone else deserves the same treatment then make your own thread and suggest them, but to come in and be all negative just speaks volumes about what type of person you are, and the other jealous negative types trying to disrupt this thread.
I came back to guild wars 2 cause I heard the living story is suppose to really churn out some serious content and is really going to develop a story. All I’ve seen is a bunch of festivals (zepherites, dragon bash, jubilee and an election.) Whats next? ohhh thats right a anniversary bash, oh what fun…. not. Basically to wrap things up living world is really one big let down to me.
listen to the latest Woodenpotatoes take on the living story and its far from boring, unfortunately it’s only speculation at the moment and hasn’t happened yet.
Its a shame about the 2-3 that disagree since they also have some site up about GW1 lore and are jealous of not getting the same attention. They should of said nothing and instead focused on delivering more lore to the community, now all I think of them is a bunch of attention starved jealous crybabies. Such a shame.
Arena better be taking notes of this.
+1
If they had it planned then great, but if not and you have WP come up with this idea then fire the writers.
Every story since release has been quite boring, Then WP drops this mindbomb, such a huge difference from anything they have come up with so far.
meh I just tune into Woodenpotatoes youtube channel and get good 20-30min episodes on the lore with artwork each week.
His latest video on the reactor is so good. The problem is the depth of the story he is telling is not translating well in the game. They need to do some kind of long cutscene to fully explain the complexity of the story, if of course WP’s assumptions are correct, and if they are this is an amazing story. I’m off to watch it again.
Hell yes, if it wasn’t for Mr Potatoes I wouldn’t give two kittens about Guild Wars lore.
^^ spot on. I couldn’t care less about the lore at first since it was so hard to find. Thanks to WP I’m actually interested in it now.
HE should be an asura durmand priory, and appears in numerous libraries around tyria researching lore. I would even try to use his voice when you talk to him.
- Interesting stuff happening – pro Thaumanova
- Interesting teamplay mechanics – pro Thaumanova
- Stuff to do other than fighting – pro Thaumanova
just noticing some of your ‘pro’ thaumanova. Since you haven’t seen either fractal you have absolutely NO idea at all about stuff happening, mechanics or stuff to do.
Sorry but you’re just making crap up like you can compare to fractals that haven’t even been made. For all you know it could be one room with a inquest pushing the wrong button and the reactor blows. big deal.
bring on the golems and inquest… oh wait, we already have one of those. I guess it can’t help getting another one.
At least that 1 month of cheap waypoints will help me purchase a legendary… oh wait, waypoints are already cheap.
Maybe we can get an exciting story involving Kiel… oh wait she’s been here for months already and is nothing but a rent-a-cop and a bad one at that (nice job stopping that assassination right in front of her eyes). She does seem to turn up after we have done the work (Canach). Now she’s on the council and under magnus thumb…
Hope we’ve seen the last of her.
Gnashblade had so much better potential as a character.
Totally this. He was actually someone that could of been developed into one of the key characters of GW2. He was already off to a good start. Kiel was nothing but annoying from the first moment she turned up.
I hope we see very little of her from now on, If I see her smug face pop up in the future its just going to annoy the hell out me.
Sigh….I suppose.
I reckon.
this fractal better be something amazing, and those waypoints better cost next to nothing.
My reasons:
- I know her from a long time.
- She is a clear heroine
- She will reduce for 4 weeks the price in somthing that I use constantly.
- The fractal is not a key factor to me. A think that a fractal is a fractal, no the next 8th wonder. So I dont care which fractal comes.Thats why I like her over Evon.
really? those are your reasons?!
I known her for a long time as well and find her to be annoying and incompetent. Basically she’s just a town guard that got promoted to looking after a festival and allows someone to die. In fact she stumbles along in everything she does and then barks orders at us.
To me she is clearly not the heroine, playing more of a support role to point us in the direction of the next part of the story. She’s Trahearne 2.0 and turns up after WE have done the dirty work.
Saving a few silver. that’s worth it. I want to finally open those BL Chests sitting in my bank. Worth more than a few silver.
Fractal. Gods or Golem. easy choice.
If anything, we will probably get a cinematic of the balloon landing after a loading screen.
I like this idea but I doubt even that would happen. loading screen seems more likely
Really, people, you’ve been saying a vote for Knashblade is a vote for RNG, but it is actually quite the opposite.
WHY!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?
- Kiel will cause inflation:
- Cheaper waypoints simply increases…… blah blah blah
You had me at “Really” – vote for Evon!!
Yeah not kitten, it’s cat.
I had to click 450x to turn in all my tokens and it was such an epic experience… not!
I know right!! whoever designed this did NOT think it through.
OMG Anet why did you not have an option to vote in stacks?! and then use the buttons in stacks?! poor design.
I have a plaster on my finger now. (its for Evon so its worth it)
You’re not alone. I have friends that have taken a break because they don’t feel like grinding out more festivals. They basically say they will return when some decent content comes out. Which worries me since we’ve had back to back festivals for a while now and halloween and wintersday is coming up i.e. more festivals.
Most people enjoyed the Molten Alliance over the others, I will say its the best Living STORY they have released since launch and we still don’t know who was the driving force behind it. And I really hope we haven’t meet that person yet because so far I can’t stand any of the characters they have introduced to us, except Evon but they’ll probably screw that up as well.
HIGH END FANTASY <- this is what the stories should be about. not low end social political rubbish. If I have to deal with one more employment contract or trade agreement I’ll probably end up joining my friends on the sidelines until a better story arc is released.
I mentioned this in another thread, but I’ll post it here for safety. We’re working on a system to direct people through the Living World (and other) content to address many of the issues people have in experiencing a linear narrative in a non-linear setting. This is something we’ve been aware of for a while but we’re now able to talk about since the system is being built. I can’t go into specifics just yet, but the long term plan is to provide players with a central mechanism for tracking content and having a better understanding of the stories in the game.
I hope its an account wide journal,
- with stories added
- bios of main characters
- a place where you can click on an icon to view a cutscene again (carrying them around in bags is stupid)
- visuals like in the living story section
- even use it as a link to the TP to buy the equipment main characters are using
- clickable links to waypoints
- have a section where as you read the story there are achievement notices attached (as in this part is where you go to get X achievement)
- I’d like it to be a place where all those cool little stories the writers put on this site can be housed.
If Kiel wins I’ll get a quaggan disguise, infiltrate their community, explain how Kiel supports drift net fishing and eating dolphin fin soup to create the Great Quaggan Uprising.
have to admit when I first heard of the airballoons I got a bit excited at the prospect of flying above the trees and soaking in the views. But the way these maps are designed it can’t happen.
Its a shame really, that is one thing I did enjoy about other MMO’s was the flying. But I realise it breaks the immersion when you just fly everywhere. I wouldn’t want flying mounts but a hot air balloon ride would be awesome.
QQ much? I have seen way more Evon support than Keil.
so have i which makes me question the validity of those poll numbers…
So I just saw the update in the polls and after 9.5million tokens it still sits at 52%/48% which was the same as last week. I cannot believe that it is that close.
The forums are full of people wanting that fractal to be made, and hardly any positive threads about Kiel. She’s already been labeled Trahearne 2.0, other threads are questioning why anyone would like her. On my server the chat is always in favour of Evon.
I think we have hyped up the Abaddon fractal too much and Anet will skew the number in Kiels favour just to avoid a disappointing fractal that doesn’t live up to expectations.
calling it now, the race will be close and Kiel will unfortunately win, then we will get another inquest dungeon with golems.
2. Why is there no night in Tyria? Now some players are screeming against their monitor ‘’look to the sky, there is night!!!’‘. Yeah just and only in the sky, landcape is always sunny. If something would give me the feeling of a living world, it would be day/night. I don’t want a dark place like the Ice Shaman fractal (in the forest). But enlightened by moon and stars. I remember to have seen some night in a trailer, but i never encountered it ingame.
This is something I’d like as well. A decent day/night/morning/afternoon/evening and a good dynamic weather system.
I know they already have a day/night cycle but its kind of weak. What would be nice is if you could choose the darkness of the nighttime. Ranging from the night in the snowblind fractal to what they have currently which is kind of like a late afternoon. I really like the sound of crickets when its nighttime – that was a nice touch. But sometimes that’s the only way I know its night.
Some people don’t want it too dark, others do. Perhaps give people the option since you are basically throwing a filter over the textures anyway. maybe pick between a few settings or have a slider to adjust the darkness.
Dynamic weather, thunderstorms, blizzards, lightning, thunder, bright summer days, the red glow of morning, morning mist, the sun on the horizon casting long shadows. This kind of stuff would be amazing.
Have the shadows stand out more, currently you can be in areas where you cast NO shadow which is silly, as soon as that happens it looks like your character is floating.
/rant
I’d like to know how much maguuma spent on AC’s this week. I remember clearing bay of surperior AC’s during a failed attack only to return a few minutes later and they had built another bunch of them. Every keep or castle we approach is greeted with a hail of arrows.
Well.. I have to agree with Op. With the probably incoming Haloween festival, and certainly Wintersday, have one more festival just now is a little boring.
exactly! too much of one thing makes them all feel common. do three months of stuggling to fight some evil thing, then throw in a festival to relax. Not festival after festival after festival after….
I’m starting to believe the elder dragon true goal is to put an end to the infinite cycles of festivals. A noble, yet really hard task to accomplish.
I lol’d.
They sure know how to party, 3 months of non stop partying!! and next patch will be more partying…
I think they need to put down the drinks and start giving us gritty high end fantasy stories. enough with the parties!
More festivals, I say.
Really? So you want to spend all the time you play in GW2 doing nothing but mini-games? Its like we’re not even playing GW2 anymore.
no I do not want to spend all my time playing mini games. Things like mini games and jumping puzzles should be fun little things to do outside the main bulk of the story. At the moment its the other way around.
Something better happen that is shocking and dramatic that knocks our socks off during this ceremony. "OMG I never saw that coming!! who is this new dark character that kidnaps the queen, its some kind of demon with a unique model never seen before, that cutscene introducing him was amazing!! now we have to group together and enter his realm (which will be a whole new area involving a progression dungeon of multiple parts!! with UNIQUE bosses to fight, dropping unique gear never seen before!)
something interesting better happen, and soon. I’m getting tired of jumping through hoops, carrying crystals, and any other mini game they throw at us. Seems like the mini game department is working overtime and the writers are slacking off – crack that whip!
assassination? I’m kind of with you on this one. Not so much the assassination part but something should happen to make this interesting.
just brainstorming a scenario here, but what if events triggered in Queensdale, that if successfully completed, forced the bandits to regroup underground? maybe in their place, new threats appear that trigger all kinds of new dynamic events. for me, if zones had a richer dynamic event experience, the world would feel much more alive. the living story is fine, but zones have become a bit predictable.
Some dynamic events already do this. In the Harathi Hinterlands there is a massive chained dynamic event which leads to eventually to a final assault against the Modniir centaur leader. You push them out of camps, you can fail this and they will retake the land.
So these world changing event already exist, are you asking that they should be included in the living story as well? This would be hard to do because people would complain about not seeing the content i.e. some group completing that part before others had witnessed it. You could do it in instanced events but that wouldn’t change the world.
I don’t like her. The only thing that made her slightly human was the fact she blew up the contracts, before that she couldn’t of been more 1 dimensional. Look at the 3 from your personal story. They were strong characters.
I find Kiel, Braham, Rox, lord Faren, Lady Kashmere all to be quite bland, they all have one type of personality. Canach has a slight edge as does Majory.
I do like Evon Gnashblade. I see him as loyal to Lions arch, he’s greedy, ambitious, He’ll be someone you wouldn’t want as your enemy but he also seems like the type that if he’s your friend he’ll never double cross you (only picked this up from the short story – he has a good heart and refused to use bully tactics on the LA people). In the short time you’ve met the guy, he didn’t trust you and lied to you (wise enough not to show his hand when he wasn’t sure who you were). Then you did a job for him and he was completely honest on his intentions to where the loot was going. He didn’t falter when questioned by the zephyrites leader while Kiel stumbled. He’s a good character.
No, they haven’t. If you compare it to other MMOs, they haven’t released full armor sets where we can earn them via dungeons or pvp. In other MMOs, you can earn full sets of armor by obtaining the next tier. GW2 has only had one full set of armor (Sky Pirates update), but only purchased via the Trading Post.
Tier? I guess you’re talking about WoW which is subscription based ($15/month) I’m looking at a 3 full sets of armor in the TP now for 800gems ($10). That beats your subscription based game for cost easily. They have also released the Aetherblade weapons, jade weapons, flame weapons, fractal weapons all easily obtainable (maybe not the fractal).
Perhaps what they should do is have rare drop in living story dungeons like the flame backpack but instead have it drop a piece of armor or the chance at a weapon. Would that be enough?
And that’s the problem. This gear isn’t earned. It’s just bought with gems or real money. Keep in mind, i’m talking about Living Story gear only. I want to actually earn it via dungeons or world events. I don’t want to earn only one piece, but full sets. For instance, the Karka Queen event could’ve dropped tokens to obtain a full set of gear, but we don’t get that. Instead we get things nobody cares about.
i understand what you are saying, but Anet still need to make money from this game and without subscriptions the gem store is the only way.
Or would you like it if you paid $15 a month and items dropped off the boss like the chest of world bosses. As in one guaranteed drop per dungeon completion. Soulbound and random.
Or dungeons bosses do drop items BUT the drop rate is very rare. So at least there is a chance of getting what you want depending on how much you want to grind it out.
What IS unrealistic to ask for is a guaranteed drop and no subscription. How does Anet make money to keep this game if that scenario happens. I’m open to suggestions..
I feel it is currently to early to tell personally.
Ask me in……….maybe a year, and then I’d feel I could give a unbiased answer.
another year? its already been one.
i think the story in the living story have 2 issues
1-no fantasy epic(wars, gods, plagues, dark powers, etc…..) , it all center about social stories like (politics, elections, consortium and their capitalistic issues, canach’s Psychological issues about being second born..etc..) i know that they want it to be more mature but come on its a fantasy game, they can mix fantasy with maturity game of thrones.
you nailed it. Not enough high end (epic) fantasy. I think it can still be mature but mix that in with a high end fantasy story and I’ll be happy.
And that is another major problem!
I would´ve liked to just log in to the game and read up on the story so far, just to make sure what´s going on.And I cannot!
Instead I have to hunt through a Wiki Encyclopedia (yeah that helps with fun & immersion) or scour the site for some short stories.
That’s why I think they should have an in-game journal like they have done with your personal story although I would make it a bit more user friendly. They can also put in their little short stories from the website into the journal. Bios on notable characters, a bestiary, packed with supporting images because not everyone likes walls of text.
Also this ‘journal’ could be current with the latest content almost like a quest helper to keep people informed on what is exactly happening and what is required of you.

I’m a huge fan of epic open-world dynamic events and since I’ve had a hand or two in the upcoming releases, you should get ready.
I’ll be interested to find out your definition of ‘epic’
Ask around, and you’ll probably find any game you could hold up as an example of a “good story” would have detractors who would disagree. Nitpicks, technical details, or plot holes which make no sense due to various reasons . . .
Here’s THE thing,
I’m not even asking for all the little technical details to be fixed. All I am looking for is an exciting story. Plot holes shouldn’t be in there if they value themselves as competent writers.
compare the story arc’s of GW1 to GW2. One is high end epic fantasy the other is about menial tasks where the main hero isn’t you, or if it is the spotlight is quickly taken away by some npc.
Not only that but the delivery is poor, I see time and time again be confused about what is actually going on, where to go, how to complete X and the usual response is “you have to read the patch notes, you have to read this article to find out the background, you have to read this short story on the official website, you have to….” Have a method to read this in-game some where, a journal or sorts.
I have hope though as I have never experienced a MMO before where the company is constantly making changes which are improving the experience. I think in another 6 months the delivery will be much better and I’m hoping the storyline will be to. If we keep getting these sub par plots I feel like my GW2 days are numbered.
Of all the things wrong with the living story – gear isn’t one of them. They have released a lot of gear/weapons.
Nope. The stories in the first game just stuck with me so much more. They meant more to me than all these little mini stories we’re getting. To me its not leaving much impact on the world really since all the content is gone after the story swaps. I mean, in prophecies we followed an exiled prince leading a mass of refugees to what was hopefully a safer place. That had impact. We had the searing! Which changed the entire layout of ascalon after we got out of the tutorial!
Factions we watched an entire country become diseased with a mysterious plague and found its source. Along the way we witnessed different gangs inhabiting Kaineng and different people. Hell we had the luxons and the kurzicks which were warring over territory constantly and had an ever moving battle line on the map showing who was controlling what and it affected stuff in the game!
Nightfall we watched as a corrupt general attempted to take over the country with an evil god. We followed through with our leader gaining the support of the big shots to help fight back and even raised the nemesis of Turai Ossa to give us aid. We went all the way into Abbadon’s realm and killed him where we witnessed the creation of a new god!
Eye of the north, we watched as new races came into the world that we’d never seen before. Technology we hadn’t even dreamed of was introduced. We met the Norn, the Asura, we worked with our mortal enemies the charr! We absolutely hated the charr back then! We’d just as soon kill and skin them on sight to make a pretty rug out of them than work with them back in the day! We managed to make all those dysfunctional races come together to fight the destroyers.
All of these seemed to have a much heavier, lasting impact on the world as we knew it and the world was actively involved in the story with us. Those stories stuck with me pretty well. Right now I’m only even remotely interested in the current living story because of the fact that if Gnashblade wins we get a peak back into something that occurred in guild wars 1.
I never played GW1 and even i miss those stories. Reading your post really emphasizes the difference between the two games. What you wrote sounds amazing, what we have gone through so far in GW2 is lame.
different writers perhaps? perhaps they should get them back on board. maybe one month we can do political drama’s like elections, mini games and road sign fixing, and the next month fight some ancient evil threatening the kingdom.

Very nice summary, Vahkris.
I actually disagree with the others here; when summarised concisely, there actually has been a fair bit of plot progression.
sure there has been plot progression, but that doesn’t make it a good story. That’s what all the complaints are about. Also the fact its poorly deliver and boring doesn’t help.
that being said there are some little gems in the story which give me a spark of hope, unfortunately they extinguish it the next patch with more dribble.
I want the living story to be a STORY, not just a new carnival every two weeks.
I want it to be a good story… not what we are getting so far.
but I still like those mini games, best I’ve ever come across in an MMO. I just would rather the living story not suffer because all the time was put into mini games.
I’d rather have full expansions that are completely thought out and finished than have a weak Living Story. The Molten Alliance was well done and then the ball got dropped.
molten alliance dungeon was good as were the two mini quests leading up to it. The road sign fixing and heirloom Fedx quests were not though.
The stories are connected. You’ll find out more later this year.
If you string out the plot lines for too long, players will lose interest.
What I’ve gotten from the ‘Living Story’ so far:
Some power hungry Charr teamed up with some underground mole people (seriously? mole people?!?! O.o) the dredge have been around since original GW Prophecies in order to wreck Kryta they actually attacked the Shiverpeaks and Ascalon for some reason. A walking Cabbage (Canach- who is ‘Canach’ anyway? Canach was introduced in the original Karka attack on LA as head of the team that ticked the Karka off. he is also a Secondborn apparently And why should I care?) went to some random resort island (seriously?!?! a resort island?!?! what happened to fantasy?) and got some crabs angry for some reason. Pirates showed up and killed someone for some reason. Then some random merchants came on a flying boat technically, only one party of merchants comes from the flying sanctum and sold us stuff for some reason.
I have no idea what is happening in this game. I could talk for hours about the lore and story of GW1 but this new GW2 ‘story’ is just page 6 tabloid filler.
I honestly don’t see how you are planning to tie the story together in any sort of coherent and meaningful fashion. It’s so utterly fragmented as to be nonexistent.
Not to sound rude, but almost nothing of your plot summarise is actually correct. Of course that by itself might just imply that the story is too stretched for the masses to follow.
His summary may or may not be correct but that’s how it feels like, boring storylines with uninteresting characters doing non interesting things.
They need to pick up the pace. Create more interesting characters with more pressing problems, where tragic or heroic things happen. Have stronger scenes…
E.g. We meet braham cragstead is taken over, he seeks help and is turned down (so far so good) but everything from then on seems to just glide along. perhaps it would of been nice to see some people slaughtered at cragstead, or perhaps when we get to the end we see a pile of bodies and Braham rushes over and one is someone he knows. Or the main bosses kills the cragstead leader in front of braham. You don’t feel anything when all you see is a bunch of norn sitting comfortably with these fire domes. It’s lame. They need something to promote some kind of emotion, where at first you may be shocked, then sad, then angry, seek revenge, then triumphant and finally satisfied.
The cutscene with majory was a good one because it had atmosphere, which this game has with its visuals but lacks with its story. The part where you talk to the dredge in his cell was great. Why? because they introduced a new character who we knew little about. After that I wanted to learn more and still do.
The Canach storyline was boring, why? Well for obvious reasons its set around a holiday resort on a hostile island. Its just silly. Canach tries to help by killing the people he’s helping – ludicrous. The end was weak, escorting employment contracts off the island – not exactly riveting.
It seriously made me question the writers had any idea on how to make the transition from paperback to game. They have to start thinking bigger because or these minor hidden details are getting lost. It’s like getting a book then riping all the pages out, scattering on the floor and telling people to understand it. Because when you have an open world to explore and the story is everywhere that’s what it is like.
*There are more people interested in epic rather than lore
I’m into epic lore… reliving a major part of GW’s history which includes gods fighting doesn’t get much better.
