No it isn’t. That video was an excellent example of how to stupidly try to find a thief. Run round like chickens with your head cut off, don’t communicate, drop traps in non-choke points, overlap traps to minimize coverage, spam aoe on where the smoke IS, or trap has gone off, rather then in places the thief might go…..
It’s a perfect example of how to hunt for a thief WRONG.
please do tell us you sure fire ways to hunt down a thief. In that video he had 360 degree exit points since it was in open ground. So what choke points are you talking about. walk around dropping AoE on all the stairs leading to the walls in Stonemist?
Come on, I’d like to hear your ideas that are so good on how to hunt a thief that is invisible 100% of the time and can teleport large distances.
Advice to budding developers (because Anet’s won’t learn): NEVER put stealth classes in a mulitplayer game.
Well, stealth is alright if it is implemented properly.
Look at games like LoL/Dota – there is stealth there too but because there are counters (wards, dust of appearance) and because stealthed characters don’t have the best mobility and burst in the game it can be balanced.
Or DAOC…any damage takes you out of stealth, and you cant restealth as long as someone is watching you or you have DOT on you, and while stealthed you move way slower
someone posted DAOC stealth mechanics in another thread but missed some of those points. I think DAOC had it done brilliantly. Never played the game but it sounds great. Thieves already have the highest mobility so stealth should be dealt this way and it wouldn’t completely destroy the class, some skills would need a rework of course.

Good to see I’m not the only one
I actually gave up WvW outside from guild events because of it. I’d add “until they fix it”, but I don’t belive ANet considers it a problem. The funnies thing is, they said, they don’t want perma stealth, coz it’s “not fun”, yet they don’t nerf it when players learned to make it perma.
DAOC perma stealth made more sense…once you pop out of stealth, you could not stealth again as long as someone was watching you
oh I like this idea. that’s stealth! what thieves are in GW2 are wizards using teleport and invisibility.
I agree with the OP. This storyline is incredibly boring. Where are the powerful strange creatures that threaten us. Not some crazed wildlife high on plants threatening to destroy some worker contracts. OMG snore.
Wooden potatoes (youtube gw2 channel) has a great video on the wizards tower. He talks about what could possibly be up there, and who. I went and visited that town and saw all the elementals walking around. When he said they were possibly the people of that town used in horrible experiments of dark magic, I felt now this is a good story. lured as apprentices and then tricked into becoming test subjects by a crazed powerful necromancer.
I could imagine a dungeon where you went through the tower, boss fights being warped creations, finally making your way up the stairs to the tower of the tower where you fight his greatest creation and then him.
But nooooo, we get business contracts in a holiday resort.
Yep
Necromancers contesting keeps is so extremely easy. Go on a random wall – auto attack once – contested. And everyone keeps crying for thieves.
This is seriously another “Omg please nerf thieves” thread.I repeat again, this is NOT a theif nerf thread.
Many classes, other than thief can do similar things. This thread is for adding a minimal damage to walls/doors before it goes contested so one person cannot just sneeze on it to contest it.
That is true it is yet another thief thread. Always people having issues with thieves but not in spvp where they were correctly nerfed but in WvW where Anet think its pve.
Its not thieves so much as its stealth. mesmers have it as well. But only two on long cooldowns.
but this contested issue should be dealt with.
IMO the contested thing needs to be reworked to only occur when a thing is actually contested. Not when the lichens growing on the door/wall have been disturbed.
I agree! then we wouldn’t have to worry about uncatchable perma stealthed/teleporting thieves or necros that rub themselves all over the castle walls.
You all forget that the best class to contest keeps is a necromancer.
After a patch a while back they can use a trait and actually lifesteal of walls = contested waypoint (and dont tell me you can defend ALL your walls from all possible sides)
really?! that’s just stupid. God kitten it Anet.
If I had a massive castle and some single peasant was banging on the keep walls I wouldn’t alert my army and say “we’re under attack – this place is contested.”
solutions:
-if damage is taken while in stealth.. the damage numbers should appear the the player delivering the attack.
-If hit by a critical attack while stealth, you should be revealed
-All traps triggered by a stealth player should cause the player to be revealed
-Any attack from stealth if blocked should reveal the player
-If targeting a player that enters stealth, and not acquiring a new target before the stealth player reappears, should automatically re-target
-The first attack from dropping from stealth OR from being stealth should have the same bonuses as the attack from stealth.
-signed.
I like all these ideas.
currently a thief can just stealth and no damage will effect that stealth at all. nothing can break it. Which is stupid.
As for the video the OP posted – that’s just a disgustingly good example on how stupid stealth is in this game. Come on Anet – start thinking a bit harder. You started off saying “stealth is a incredibly powerful mechanic that should be used sparingly.” Now you let thieves have a perma stealth build option.
I like the what the Anet PvP developer said about thieves..
“we want to give them the highest burst and the highest mobility” – also included: the best evasion mechanic as well.
their failure to balance this class after 9months is a bit of a worry. It makes me wonder if they are like the blizzard devs who failed to make thieves work correctly after 8 years.
I play WvW pretty much 80% of the time. Thieves and stealth was one of the main reason I left WoW. You don’t leave straight away.. its just builds up over time until you say “fuk this! I don’t enjoy dealing with this class, its ruining the fun, time to play something else” then you find yourself returning less and less often. You also lose confidence that the developers have any idea what they are doing, which adds to the disappointment.
you totally need more than just one player to hit the door once to contest the waypoint for 3mins. Especially if its a thief that can do it. instant infinite stealth, shadow steps, teleports…
tbh I don’t think contesting waypoints is an issue I think its the class than can do it.
I just started a thread were I collected all the past letters from the previous karka-event in november. Maybe this (and reading of the GW2-Wiki) will help to understand the story.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/Lost-Shore-Old-Letters-from-the-Story
ok so I read those letters you put together and they are boring… sorry. Let me pick out some key phrases
“dangerously understaffed” = sounds like work.
“interested, available, and qualified” = sounds like a job interview.
“improve her academic credentials” = sounds like school
“any questions, complaints, or legal claims..” = boring
Everything is so formal and boring. How about some drama please, maybe some humour in there as well? A simple blood stained note “I’m coming for you!!!” and initialed says so much, whose blood is it, who initals are those? when are they going to strike – something so simple causes interest and mystery with some punch to it as well. These long winded letters induces sedation. The most interesting letters were from Canach, he had at least some type of emotion in them, and the second one was interesting because he had discovered a strange type of plant.
What would of been better if this plant had some kind of effect on him and his following letters would show the change.
Canach is an interesting character, I agree. He has developed since the Karka invasion, he is trying to do good but in a bad way. He is such an interesting character that people are not sure whether to side with him or blindly believe in other (npc’s) that he is all bad.
But building contracts on an island resort? Why did it have to be that? What a waste of a good character on such a bland theme. I could handle the refugees used to build something but not an island resort. I would prefer it if you didn’t even see any of the refugee workers and the consortium refused to allow you entrance to the building site.
Quests could revolve around doing quests for the consortium with each quest giving you another piece to the puzzle.
Make a mission (dungeon) where you had to infiltrate the maasive building site then escape using multiple options or paths. Find out what’s going on. Make that a dungeon, sneaking in (and then out) could be a solo or team dungeon.
Maybe during the break-in there could be some explosions or karka attacks and Canach could appear in a cutscene… and so on and so on…
I find the story a bit lacking. Basically we are on an island where a group is building a resort. Some refugees signed some contracts, now this guy wants to free them from their job obligations they reluctantly agreed to. All a bit boring tbh.
Reminded me of when I first watch star wars part one, and they talked about the trade federation, treaties, all that boring political stuff.
Give me good old classic storytelling with some meat to it. murder, backstabbing, betrayal, armies going to war, world threats, NOT sorting out building contracts of a beach resort.
Me too. The only problem that he has is that he is capable to do anything in order to screw the consortium (like he did in November).
But actually… who likes the consortium?
His reasons are fine to me, I support his goal.In other hand I agree that making the karka angry is not the solution, so we need to stop him.
I just hope that we don´t kill him and he can return or even help us in the future. He can be the bad ally that everybody has. It would be nice to teach him how to do things in a more noble way. Please anet, dont kill him. Let us know him better!Making a balance, this is the interest that I have so far about the new presented npcs:
1.-Canach
2.-Rox
3.-Kasmeer
4.-Lord Faren
.
5.- Kiel
.
.
.
.
6.-Braham
You know you’ve given me an idea seeing that list. Perhaps Canach (who I respect and like) is part of the new destiny’s edge. We already have Braham and Rox – norn and Char. Now we have a sylvari – Canach.
He just needs to tone down his rebellious ways. It could happen
this is annoying, and I believe its because of all those unsocial basement dwellers who cried when they had to group/talk/interact with other people in a MMO game to complete the last dungeon.
let’s learn from this and stick to group dungeons from now on…
I agree that group dungeons are better than solo dungeons and that I will also prefer these. That being said, why can’t there be both an option for group play AND solo play? (with more rewards for group play to give incentive to it, of course.)
Also, why the weird ad-hominem attacks on people who prefer solo to group play. And are you honestly labeling people as “unsocial basement dwellers” because they don’t like instanced player interactions in a video game? That seems a little silly.
what I said was extremely silly, labeling all people that wanted to do it solo basement dwellers. Its more a reflection on how silly I find it that people can’t just join a group and experience a grouped dungeon event.
It also annoys me that because of this attitude of ‘people wanting to solo dungeons’, and that Anet is listening to them, its limiting things I can do in a group.
Its stretching the resources of Anet if they develop for both options. We limit the amount of content because Anet has to develop and balance dungeons for solo AND 5-man.
people should just join a group. how hard is it really to join a group? I have never come across and angry or impatient player yet. This isn’t the WoW toxic community where everyone chastises the other players for low dps, not keeping aggro, not healing enough etc. This community is full of helpful players.
I created a topic during F&F to discuss the merits/flaws of ending primarily solo content with a 5 man dungeon. It turned out to be a pretty contentious topic.
Whether this new ending structure to Southsun was a response to that or planned all along I think it is a great format.
Single player instance that tops off the story for those who cannot fathom entering a 5 man dungeon and an explorable mode on the side for those who do. Thats perfect imo.
Thanks Anet. Jus’ throwin’ it out there that I love that direction!
well I disagree, I play this MMO to do these things in groups, not solo my way through all the content.
I like to be social. I do not like this direction at all. I don’t want all dungeons from now on to be solo dungeons.
this is annoying, and I believe its because of all those unsocial basement dwellers who cried when they had to group/talk/interact with other people in a MMO game to complete the last dungeon.
let’s learn from this and stick to group dungeons from now on…
only thieves have the right to build full glass canon due to their stealth and superior escape mechanics.
I’m on sea of sorrows and its crazy how many people turn up for world events, I didn’t realize at first how many there were due to culling but I started to move around and wait then another 30 new characters would appear, take a few more steps and another 30+.
Even when I’m out questing I am always bumping into 2-3 people at any one time. no matter where I am
I haven’t been able to see southsun on my server yet – always in the overflow.
‘very high’ I believe that.
I have a couple of serious questions.
1. Did the person that came up with the math for this graduate from high school.
2. To prove it, please upload a copy of your high school diploma. How about just a copy of their resume. I don’t see his high school experience on there. Hopefully the other stuff can count as relevant experience for your assessment.
While the Glicko system is a staple of chess rankings and many other ranking systems, I think it is worth saying that the implementation of a tool is more important than the tool itself. This is where the famous phrase “The right tool for the job” comes in. For example, the screwdriver and hammer are both time tested tools, both are proven to be successful, but each has a very specific application. If I was trying to torque a screw, I wouldn’t want to use a hammer. Get the picture Jon? Someone’s qualifications don’t indicate the success of a system and it’s implementation. I’m by no means saying that the Glicko system isn’t the right application, because, well, I don’t know whether it is or isn’t. It doesn’t take a statistician however to say that the current ranking system is entirely broken… the biggest problem is that the servers are not all on equal footing. Why not create a system that encourages players to spread out to various servers… for example, why not control the maximum amount of players in WvW for one server by applying a cap based on the standard deviation of the lowest server? This would allow for some level of control, but won’t entirely prevent one team from outmatching another (by more than a standard deviation).
Even though this was the creator of the glicko system, are they using it for GW2? Do you not think Mark Glickman could of possibly create a system specifically for WvW.
now I’m worried about the upcoming dungeon. I’m kind of siding with canach now… He’s not doing anything that bad for me to want to go after him and kill him, maybe bring him to justice but that’s it.
What happened to villains we learn to hate, not learn to feel compassionate about.
And if he cleaned out a molten facility then he’s not the smooth slick talking person the dredge was talking about while locked up under the black citadel.
I have a feeling the true villain hasn’t revealed themselves yet.
Why do you need to have Ascended gear at all? I haven’t got any Ascended gear on any of my characters and do absolutely fine. The only thing I can think of you’d need it for is Fractals, which is fairly self-contained (I don’t do Fractals though).
So why do people feel that they need them at all? Let alone for each aspect of the game?
Because ascended equipment gives you the slight edge over players with just exotics…
the OP isn’t talking about ascended items he’s talking about infusions, you know that +5 to one stat infusion. hardly an unfair advantage.
Yes, in a heartbeat.
^^
totally this.
I would be expecting an epic storyline and hope for some major non-dragon boss. But even if it still was another dragon I’d still get it.
got it tonight, picked up a conch had 3 karka’s up, got the crab, feared everyone and hit 3. they all died. got the achievement. I wouldn’t say it was easy to do, required a bit of timing but that’s why its called an achievement.
Server costs aren’t that much. You can check WoW server costs of blizzard on the internet, google it.
you could try but you’ll never get a true number, why? the costs are so small its basically a footnote under their expenses table in the annual report. Its also so small its grouped together with others costs as well – its that small.
Listening to WoW fanboys defend the constant monthly sub as server costs is so ridiculously stupid it makes me cry.
I’ll also go on to add the gem store is a amazing success, I know of people that budget $200 a month for the gem store. I’m a working adult as are most my friends and dropping $200 a month into a game we enjoy is nothing compared to how we can do the same one night drinking out in town.
(edited by Thobek.1730)
yeah welcome back, but bad timing you just missed the dungeon. No problem though even more new content will be out shortly.
-The community as a whole is a lot better than experiences I’ve had in other games. If I ask a question in /map I’ll get the answer 5x over without having to read “LoL Newbs!” A lot of time if I ask a question about an area someone will offer to waypoint near me and show me where to go and help me in combat if I need.
-Along that line and this goes with the XP thing, if I’m in a bind players will run up and bail me out. This has happened more times than I can count. I try to do the same when I have the opportunity.
I don’t get this community, where did they come from because everyone seems to be really helpful. How can WoW (my previous MMO) have such a nasty toxic community and yet this one is so much better?
As for the “end boss” fight, the first stage of the event could be against the Voice.
You know that jumping puzzle with the ghost pirate, what would of been good is when you move through Arah you can hear his voice like the ghost pirate, although not as clear, slightly difficult to pick up the works at first, maybe something like the sound of multiple voices talking (since he’s made up of multiple dragons) he could taunt you as you moved closer to his location.
Having the eye and mouth of Zhaitan never really worked for me, They seemed small at first (in scale, Zhaitan is enormous and the eye was barely taller than a human) and not necessary, they didn’t really provide much to Zhaitans development.
maybe even sell you an extra swing for 100 gems a swing =)
hot tip #142 – you can edit you post instead of posting 3 times in a row.
lol the dungeon the end, we blew them all up. they added a nice little finishing scene and that’s it.
And besides, villains with personalities come with their issues. Pretty much all villains who aim for the destruction of the world are insane. And that gets really boring really quickly.
world domination or destruction. But if you look at some of the reasons they can be multiple and their techniques many. I’ve played many computer games over the years and had to deal with many end game villains.
Sephiroth (wants revenge) from Final fantasy was a a goody
Kefka (totally insane wanting world destruction and to become a god.)
Lich King in WoW(misguided, possessed), good story a hero so dedicated to protecting his homeland he uses dark power which unfortunately he can’t control and eventually awakens or frees the dead lich.
Liquid Snake / ocelot (insane perhaps)
These were great villains and had different motives albeit the same outcome. I had no connection with Zhaitan at all and to talk ‘through’ your minions makes the connection even worse.
The living story is heading in the direction I like “a fast talking city folk from lions arch” – this sounds interesting. i hope to be tricked, mislead, deceived, betrayal… then I’ll really want to finish this person off.
2:50… tell me this is not EPIC!!! those trebs at night…
omg that is aweome! how good would it be to even use it as a strategy – “We attack at night!”
I think someone mentioned the possibly a toggle switch in the options settings to make it darker would be nice. personally I would love to have it darker but I could see others not sharing my opinion.
I was just thinking dragons are a bad end game boss. They don’t communicate with you they just fly around seeing us as ants. There is no real engagement with the player.
I prefer some nasty lich, demon, demi-god, etc that mocks the player, laughs while he kills innocents, share dialogue with the players, turns up now and again to thawt your progression.
I guess my question is ‘what type of end game boss do you prefer?’
+1 vote for darker, it would add so much to the atmosphere.
I don’t want just to throw them I want to CRUSH THEM. creepy little kittens chasing me while I’m trying to complete the guild rush.
Also all mini games should have tournaments attached to them every now and again to make them extremely busy and with lots of numbers you could new people into them.
If they do fishing for the love of god don’t make it like WoW!! that was mind numbling boring. At least put some kind of skill into it.
But it does open up:
-daily fishing challenges
-weekly fishing tournaments. The current winner has his fish hanging by the wharf in lions arch. And the top fish ever caught (over the months) gets stuffed and displayed behind a bar at a tavern in lions arch.
-rare fish finds
-trophy fish (another tab to find and catch them all)
-another skill to level up
-find rare fishing spots
thieves can return to stealth way too often and way too easily.
My problem is thieves can return to stealth very quickly after unstealthing. Once a thief comes out of stealth for whatever reason they should always get the 3 second debuff, no matter what – hit or miss, and restealthing abilities shouldn’t apply stealth until that debuff is gone.
Anet wants to give them the highest burst and highest mobility of any class (this they said themselves in the video not 3 weeks ago). Giving them so much stealth as well without a hard counter is too much.
D/D zerker builds are not a highskill cap you can be bad and spam to win atm which is not good design. Losing the fight? stealth and run… no risk.
Re-read the posts, you’re not being told one thing and then told another. Here’s the facts, ignore whatever else you’re being told that contradicts these things:
- Unless the Thief was hacking, they were not immune to any damage.
- he wasn’t, but no one could tag him. We randomly dropped AoE, swung mindlessly in the area he disappeared. But he moved around so quickly it was difficult to do any real damage to him.
- If he was coming out of stealth for a very short duration of time (definitely less than the 3 second revealed duration time) then he was most likely using a dagger off hand and using dagger #5 Cloak and Dagger which does a half-decent amount of damage and puts the Thief in stealth for 3 seconds (4 if traited).
- ok this must of been it. Because it was seriously between .5 second to 1 second max.
- If this is what he was doing then the fact that you were finally able to catch him via CC is exactly how it should have played out and now you know for next time to CC him sooner.
- no one was able to react fast enough to re-target him and then apply some CC, the engineers turret was the only way we finally managed because that was instant. and he still went into stealth
- While doing this his damage is pitiful and actually managing to kill AND stomp anyone would be a miracle.
-he killed no one. because we had 20 guys circling the area laying down AoE, but he did manage to take out one of the siege weapons which takes a few hits to be destroyed. It still took forever to take out one guy. No other class would of lasted 1/20th of the time this guy did
You can pretty much remain permanently stealthed with proper timing, skills and initiative management (plus trait setup).
Although if you want to learn how to beat thieves and figure out what they’re doing it’s best to roll one and try it out.
I will eventually once I unlock some more slots. In the meantime they always remain a bit of a mystery with the crazy stealth things they can do.
I’ve come to live with the burst damage, its not being able to target them which is doing my head in.
Or he re-stealth after stealth = zero time to next stealth and only trolling you
BTW 20 people hunt one Thief like a noobs is stupid
So some thieves say you can and others say you can’t. Some say you could then couldn’t and now can again.
All I know is being visable for only 1 second at a time is bullkitten.
I’ve come here immediately after experiencing this thief in WvW popping in and out of stealth during combat so quickly he couldn’t of been visable for more than a second. Is this working as intended?
People were commenting on it as he zipped around a ground of abotu 20 of us. we finally managed to snare him thanks to an automated turret and AoE the space where we imagined him to be (he had restealthed again) It took forever to take him out after he destroyed one of our siege weapons.
I thought once you attacked you had a 3 second reveal debuff placed on you. I am wrong?
I forgot how good this looked. I would also me happy if they somehow incorporated the news feed and manual into the old login.
is it a corrupted file?
If so the repair function does not work. People have used system restore to roll back to when the game wasn’t corrupted and have reported success from that. I unfortunately have tried a complete rebuild and still having the corrupt file issue.
I tried removing some processes, not having any other programs runnings, disconnecting other drives just in case the game is clashing with something else on my machine. Played for a few hours last night without an issue which is good news so far.
Bad news is this issue has been around since launch and no solid solution on a fix has been supplied. Keep trying and post any findings you have.
I believe Anet are just as lost as we are on why this is happening.
What the kitten is this problem?! Its been happening to me a lot. I keep seeing “MainCli.cpp(589)” that appear on all my crash reports.
It seems this issue is everywhere, and even though I have sent through, what must of been, 60+ of these reports still the problem is not solved. You must have 1000’s of these reports from people by now since this problem has been here since launch.
Anet please stop with that automated reply. It doesn’t work and looks like a bs band-aid fix.
actually I didn’t know that, but you were right. I got rid of the smaller one and it didn’t effect the game.
why do I have 2 .dat files in my gw2 folder? what’s the smaller 33mb one all about?
ok so what it seems to be is a corrupted file within the game and even if you try and repair it that doesn’t work. The only option is to rollback to before the dat file became corrupted.
Sounds like Anet repair system is garbage but luckily there is a work around. Have yet to test if this actually works but will post back my findings later.
edit, I’m glad that worked for some. But I removed my entire Gw2.dat file and replaced it with one from last year before all this crashing started happening. Still broken.
This is frustrating as its happening more and more often. Doesn’t seem to crash unless I’m on my mesmer for some unknown reason.
(edited by Thobek.1730)
ok now its getting serious, before it was crashing during non important times. Now its crashing during dungeons. When I’m joined to a bunch of random people them having to wait 5 minutes while I ‘repair’ is now not fun for me or the 4 others I have grouped with.
FIX THE PROBLEM. and don’t give me this check disk response either, you keep saying that to everyone and it hasn’t worked for anyone.
Very annoyed right now.
Hi Andrizzay – Your Crash logs are showing CRC errors, what this means is that something has caused a file to be the wrong size and corrupted the installation. The first thing we want to rule out are issues on your drive.
Please do the following first to check and repair your drive:
1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Computer.
2. Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
4. To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
5. Click Start.
Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, don’t use your computer for any other tasks while it’s checking for errors.
Once that is complete, Please navigate to your Documents > Guild Wars 2 folder and in there you should see a file called Local.dat. Delete this file.
Once you’ve done this please repair the client again.
Hope this helps!
I have seen this suggestion on the web before. No, it did not work.
I too have seen this and tried it. Still the game crashes. What’s our next option?
