“another asura blown up experiment” (a gross understatement of Thaumanova’s lore)

what do you know about it that I have missed? what actually happened there or what do you know happened that is more than “the inquest had an accident during there experiments?”

not that it matters I want to see gods fighting, not much can beat that.

This is the only reason you can bring up against this Fractal to support your awesome millionth human god-related thing.

Then answer these questions, because I do not know what happened:
-What was the sample used? Where was it gathered?
-Were Destroyers involved? Was it krewe infighting? Was it sabotage? Did something simply manifest out of the experiment wreaking havoc and requiring containment?
-How were the major effects even contained to begin with?
-Why is there Ancient Fire Elemental Energy that keeps emerging there whereas the other effects tend to be the teleportation in of enemies from across Tyria, and the rest of its effects tend to be Chaos Magic related?
-What’s so crucial about Chaos Magic that the Inquest was inspired to continue its work, despite such a critical failure at Thaumanova Reactor?
These are just some questions.

We know the Fall of Abaddon happened, we’ve heard about it tons of times from GW1, we know it was divine disagreement that caused his fall.

I would also like to know more about the Fall, but not at this cost.

If the Thaumanova Reactor will lose because of a few spared gems for keys then I won’t really care because I think I probably won’t see either Fractal anyway. I just think there should always be paralleling contradictory threads in every forum, because it’s fun to see both sides.

say your right and something interesting happened, great. But maybe you’re wrong and its just another case of an asura experiment gone wrong. We already have CoE, and the fire elemental world boss. We can find the key and even fight the steam golem. I want something different.

It all points to the Grand High Sovereign and some inquest meddling. I would prefer a larger more complex story involving him (since he’s from the future or another reality) than a simple fractal. For the purposes of a Fractal it would be far more interesting to see the Abbadon fight. Deal with the reactor later.

Kiel as much as she’s trying to do good is a weak character not a leader, she should stick to guarding ceremonies. Did you watch the cutscene on the airship? she couldn’t even tell the leader of the zephyrites if she was liked or not, faltered at the first hurdle.

Sure Gnashblade is a greedy Selfish Charr but we have to pick one.

If I could I’d pick Marjory Delaqua. That’s a character that doesn’t fumble around like an idiot.

We don’t know why the reactor exploded. Also abaddon is dead who cares about him, the reactor might have something that matters about the current dragons. The inquest have been doing their own research in the dragons. What I say is if you want abaddon go to gw1, I heard he is mentioned a lot there. People who never did play gw1 even knows who he is.

Actually who cares about the reactor, they pushed the wrong button, it overheated and exploded. Zzzzzzzz… you get to fight a bunch of inquest (seen them) in the reactor (been there)

Abaddon is a GOD, and he fought amongst the other GODS in the heart of a volcano. yeah just slightly more epic.

And before anyone answers “Abaddon”, would you really rather have a visual representation of lore you’ve known for eight years over a chance to learn something entirely new about the world of Tyria in the Reactor Meltdown?

sorry but the lore so far has been fairly weak, given the chance to experience gods fighting each other is too good to pass.

Its a shame because based on my gut feeling between the two I would vote for Kiel in an instant, based on the boring lore so far I’m forced to vote for gnashblade.

I’m also hoping voting for gnashblade sends a message to Anet…. enough boring lore, lets have a more epic storyline.

[What if?] Stealth as a Boon

Stealth, is another issue in this game and plays right into the same category, it’s just so difficult to punish, and there is no real other counter for stealth than another stealth, there is no intelligent play behind; it’s just a free “do what I want” card.
If there was a reveal mechanic or a way to counter it, then you would see a lot more intelligent play and thought process put behind stealthing, but at the current state of the game there just isn’t.

Amen to that!

I’ve been crying, QQ’ing, whining little a baby since launch how stupid this is. No counter and basically a huge advantage is bad design. It was originally designed to used sparringly as one dev stated but its now completely spammable (if you are a thief, but not if any other class)

Stealth is tough to balance as no game I know does it well. I heard DAoC did a good job of it and recognised it for the powerful trait that it was. Things like you couldn’t restealth if you had line of sight. At the moment thieves have invisibility not stealth.

The forums are full of complaints and they are updated weekly with new ones. Anet thinks it’s fine and basically comes down to a L2P issue… supposedly.

Its the fact that they get the jump on you (which you have no counter for) and hit for insane amounts of damage. If that doesn’t work they stealth and run away, then stalk you again for another attempt. The designers have failed to understand balance in its simplest form. countering. If there is NO counter to stealth which there isn’t currently then the fun is taken out of the game (unless your talking about paying for a stealth trap from a vendor – hardly a counter when you see how small the trap area is, and the fact you have to pay for it.)

You misunderstand me. I don’t mind a bit of politics IF they did it like the game of thrones (warring factions on a huge scale, murder, ancient force threatening the world, mystery, betrayal) Not only that but the game of thrones characters are developed and interesting. If that’s what they are trying to do they are failing.

Lets check the GW2 story then shall we?

There is a somewhat large-scale war against Separatists, Flame Legion and other splinter factions of the races, the whole reason for the election is murder, the Elder Dragons is definetly classified as an “ancient force threatening the world”, there are

large scale wars? cities aren’t getting sacked nor are armies fighting each other. basically its a few random skirmishes scattered around tyria. You’re clutching at straws to call those fights “large scale wars” Neither are you getting kings overthrown or power shifts. nothing has changed.

Murder? a spark from a tree, it would of been much better if he wasn’t present at the ceremony and latter you found him later with a simple dagger in the back. Then you say one line (not the interrogation I hoped it would be) to each of the 6 you track down i.e.“go to star on map” and after that in lions arch you point to the character any idiot already knew was the killer.

dragons? there was no dialogue or interaction with zhaitan. press 2 to kill the lizard clinging to a wall. Zhaitans minions was basically a zombie invasion. countless millions of mindless reanimated people. You feel nothing chopping them down because they were lifeless souls, could of been an army of ooze.

Do yourself a favour and watch woodenpotatoes GW1 history lesson on the Flameseeker prophecies youtube link That story was amazing in comparison to what we have received so far.

That’s passive entertainment though. This is a game, interactive entertainment. There’s a desire for the culmination of both in a decent way. Clearly the OP doesn’t see the blending done well in this case, and that’s okay. He/she can ignore it until it passes.

Not like bleckish moments in your personal story at any rate…

True, but the OP seems to assume that fantasy can’t involve politics, and I simply corrected him and gave an recent example.

A fantasy story consisting only of magic and dragons and mythical beast would most likely be quite boring after all.

The stories so far have been about employment contracts at a holiday resort, one dimensional characters (unlike the 3 from the living story), election campaigns, roadworks (fixing roadsigns), babysitting refugees, even the fact that Mai Trin was not a priestess was so transparent I felt like I was reading a children’s book. Canach’s way of dealing with the situation by trying to kill the people he was supposed to be defending was so stupid.

Now look at one of the GW1 story arc’s. The bloodstones.

The bloodstones are five shards of a massive stone created by the Gods of Tyria and sealed with the blood okitteng Doric.

At least two of the bloodstones are used by the White Mantle and Mursaat to sacrifice the Chosen. When slain, the Chosens’ souls are channeled into the soul batteries – structures created by the Mursaat to keep the Door of Komalie, and ultimately the Titans sealed away.

The Chosen are commoners from Kryta who are taken by the White Mantle supposedly for recruiting. and are said to be taken away for learning magic at the Temple of the Unseen by the Grand Masters.

The truth, however, is that the Chosen are part of the Flameseeker Prophecies, destined to cause the downfall of the Mursaat. In the Maguuma Jungle the players learn that the White Mantle, servants of the Mursaat, are taking the Chosen into the jungle to be sacrificed on a bloodstone.

Here is a story involving the gods, titan’s, factions misleading you into thinking you’re doing good only to find out the truth – betrayal, horrible mass murder of innocents, then you seek revenge. Strong motives. If Anet are slowly ramping themselves to delivering a story like this they are taking their time about it.

Thobek.1730

Well then I’m not satisfied with the Living World. I’m fine with them drizzling out Living World content, but I don’t care if it’s monthly, bi-weekly, weekly, or even daily content additions, if it never actually goes anywhere then who cares?

I’m fine with the living world, but only if it acts to progress the war against the dragons. If they require an expansion to start tackling a new dragon, then they need to switch focus back to working on the expansion immediately and ditch all this Living World stuff.

So…the Living Story isn’t going anywhere simply cause we don’t know what the general big picture is currently? Also why should everything be dragons or bust? Just because you can’t see the destination doesn’t mean the journey isn’t worth taking or that the story is pointless.

It doesn’t have to be dragons or bust. At least not for now, and introduction of one of the other dragons would be nice. But in the meantime something better than next chapters election campaign would be a step in the right direction.

I used to play WoW and the story pre cata was so rich in lore and fantasy. War against the Lich King, Travel through a portal to another dimension to fight an outcast of the night elves who has assembled an army. Fight against the generals of a god. What do we get? an election campaign involving two boring characters for a trading company. seriously?!!?

If someone asked me about GW2 and said “what’s the story like?”

“Well this chapter we have these two characters we’re helping out to get elected to fill an empty spot on a trading company”

“No, I said GW2, the fantasy MMO, not SIM POLITICS 2.0”

I think alot of people have missed alot of the developing story.

This is the problem, if there is a story it’s not very well delivered. “You missed the story” ok, where was I supposed to look for it, obviously its not that important or doesn’t affect my character if I have missed it. The cutscene in the bar was probably the best storytelling so far, good dialogue, I was involved, amazing visuals…

Flame and frost was also done well, not the first part… sign post repair duty went on for way too long. But the conclusion was good. Actually there wasn’t a conclusion because you never found out who the dredge was talking about. I’ll be disappointed if it was the pirate girl (can’t even remember her name because she was boring as a character)

GW2 as much as I like it (which is a lot) the stories so far have been so underwhelming and I’m getting sick of people saying “just wait, something exciting will happen soon”

Throw your cap over the wall

There’s no big picture, and if so, we can’t see the shape of it, and so we can’t have any sense of anticipation. What’s happening after the bazaar? No clue. It could be in the Shiverpeaks, it could be in Ascalon, it could be on the moon for all we know.

…but set up a cool future event, something cool enough that people would buy a $50+ expansion just to experience it, and tell us that it will be happening in the relatively near future.

This is my problem with the living story as well, and it bugging me more and more. The new content looks amazing has fun little mini games but has no substance or progression. Just random little chapters which seem like hardly a task for the guy that killed Zhaitan. I’m now reduced to fixing roadsign posts, collecting kites, sorting out island resort employment disputes, helping with trade agreements, and coming up soon… an election. (the banners and election pins have already been datamined) OMG SO UNINSPIRING!!

For an example of what I want: A quest to find some ancient tomb (find clues to its entrance, a way to enter it (maybe by charging up an artifact by going to locations around the map), fight my way through through a huge dungeon (which has a linear progression which is unlocked in stages and you can return to a part you unlocked NOT paths), take on this strange mysterious individual and his generals, who we discover later comes from X, and his real intentions are Y. I want to find out that the person that sent us there was corrupted by this mysterious character and it was a trap, then when we have dealt with X we return to confront our trapper and he escapes at the end of the fight not before revealing there is another, a more powerful individual is behind it all and next chapter we have to go to another amazing location to work out how to defeat our new foe…

I want reoccurring characters I feel connected to (Kiel is just seems one dimensional compared to the charismatic characters from the 3 factions in my living story). I want an arch enemy that keeps eluding me so when I finally take him out it feels like an accomplishment.

in Bazaar of the Four Winds

Posted by: Thobek.1730

Thobek.1730

I like that they are going with different plotlines to what you would normally experience, but I can agree that there does need to be more ‘traditional fantasy’ in the mix as well. Flame and Frost was good but missed that fantasy mark a little bit.

forgot about F&F. That was also good. It was ‘us’ against an unknown threat, it developed and characters were involved that I kind of liked. Then we slowly discovered what was happening thanks to a spy leaving his reports scattered around the world. Those hints may me want to find out more. The dungeon was amazing and it felt epic, even planting the bombs and dashing to the exit before the place blew was fun.

I feel like two teams are working on the living story, one has it right and the other has no idea what fantasy is all about. I don’t play this game to be reminded of the real world. What’s next a mission about? resource consent? Maybe someone is accused of insider trading in the black lion trading company and you have to conduct due diligence on the parties involved going through 5,000 documents? (you’ll get an achievement for this)

First of all let me say Bazaar of the four winds is a beautiful fantasy setting, my god when I first turned up and made my way to the top it was amazing. The floating ship was so beautifully put together, even the sounds of grinding wood and wind really made it feel like you were so high up. Such nice work on the visuals and setting, now the bad part…

The story is so weak. WEAK! southsun was boring, dealing with disgruntled employee’s contracts. Contracts?! really sounds like a typical day at work.

Aetherblade was great, starts of with a beautiful cutscene, sneaky pirates trying to disrupt the dragon bash, then you take the fight to them in a stunning dungeon (that area where the waves are crashing against the shore, heavy rain was so nice)

Now bazaar is here and OMG the first cutscene I get is about an election then talk to her further and its a trade agreement. This is a fantasy setting and I dealing with elections and trade agreements. FFS! stop it! from employment disputes to elections to trade agreements. This is how the star wars movies turned out first three were about adventure, the next three turned into a mess of trade agreements, elections (votes of no confidence) and the backlash from fans was severe.

TLDR… Stick to fantasy adventure, mystery, revenge, fighting against insurmountable odds, interesting villains, murder, romance, rescue missions… things that evoke emotions. Trade agreements and employment contracts do not.

On the world bosses I tend to agree with what you say. I’m one of the few I noticed that fight the mobs during teq because I don’t like to just sit there autoattacking the boss. They did mention that it only scales to a certain number and not beyond that. So many people are at world bosses on my server they don’t stand a chance. The number fighting is a lot higher than the scaling can produce an interesting fight (mechanics aside)

Jormag is on the right path, the debuff you get hurts so much you have to wait until its down before you can approach safely. The others should follow suit. In Teq the gun should HAVE to fire, or the mobs WILL attack from behind if you don’t take care of them.

Sea of Sorrows has a high Aussie/Kiwi population, so you might like to try guesting there to see if you have more luck finding people to play with.

Other servers that might have more oceanic players include Isle of Janthir and Gates of Madness, so you could also try guesting to them if SoS doesn’t suit you.

^this. SoS was/is an unofficial oceanic server. Heaps of people are on, map chat is always busy, lions arch has lots of people in it. Group events are so packed poor bosses don’t last very long, even when I’m in the most remote places in Tyria I always seem to bump into someone.

Sorry to say you picked the wrong server. I’m sure its a good server but just not for your timezone. How were you to know? you weren’t. People slowly worked it out since launch.

Its like when I picked a U.S server when I played WoW, and this was during its WotLK peak. Dead server was dead, but then when I logged in on the weekends and the americans were on, it was full of people. You just log on when no one is around.

Even though I like Dragon Ball, the rewards are weak for winning and AFK players ruin the fun.

Got my twenty wins but it was painful when teamed up with AFK drones.

How Anet didn’t see this coming is beyond me. Such an obvious place to AFK farm.

Disappointing end to the mystery. *Spoilers*

i like how we got the journal. I wanted a way to watch that again. I hope they do that in the future. My only issue is I don’t want to carry around a whole lot of journals. Need a bank slot for them.

I also agree the ending was a bit lazy. I would of liked it if you received stories from each of the representatives and using that info piece together who it was. It did seem a bit rushed.

They could of done it so you picked a character when you were ready to accuse someone. If you got it wrong you could guess again but receive less reward (so there is a risk)

The cutscene was amazing and it all went downhill very quickly from there. Perhaps the writers are having troubles working in this gaming format. cutscene – brilliant! questing/instances – not so brilliant.

This straight female says: Marjory is the hottest.

Well, this straight male says: Kasmeer is the hottest, but I wouldn’t say no to Marjory either.

More bad communication (spoilers inside).

People need to read the patch notes. It baffles me that people do not go and check after each update. If people don’t read the patch notes then it’s their own fault; not the dev’s. There’s no reason that people need to have their hands held.

this is absolute rubbish. A game should never have to rely on third party/external information to work or be understood.

WoW did this and it sucked. New expansion and everything changed – why? what happened? “You just have to buy this series of books, its all explained in there” – absolute rubbish!

MMORPG, patch notes on official site, its like saying “one shouldnt need to read the manual” in the old SNES days, believe it or not patch notes are part of what you got when buying GW2, so shut up.
Also for wow, you got 99% of the story (that they butchered in wrath of the kitten queen and are now trying to fix) by questing.

patch notes = what has changed/player manual = how to play the game, two completely different things. Imagine taking things to extremes (to prove a point) i.e. all quest information is given out via patch notes. “You must visit X, go see Y.” with no in-game prompts. How stupid would that be? Why don’t they take it a step further and include ALL quest information in-game. locations, times, etc instead of jumping around from one source to the other to get the complete picture.

understand? probably not…

Finally good writing!

I’ve forgotten how beautiful the zones are… Divinity’s Reach is stunning, haven’t been there for months. It shouldn’t feel grindy to go back to those zones (like the effigies), the story implementation here is exactly how it should be… awesome!

^ this. I actually stopped to take some screen shots. Lots of people running around that alley outside the bar, the musical contraption in the background, the confetti rainging down. Stunning. I hope to see Anet use Divinity’s reach more in the future.
