If I tell my kids we’re going to the movies tonight and suddenly I’m called into work and I can’t take them, I didn’t lie. Because when I said it, I had every intention of taking them to the movies. The situation changed.
I have to point this out, as I had this a lot growing up myself . . .
. . . kids of a certain age range aren’t going to understand that. What they’re going to understand is that you said one thing and then it didn’t happen.
What age range? I’d say the age range is around 6-42.
. . . what? Look at what politicians have to put up with over “lies, deceptions, and betrayals of trust”.
Well one developer did comment on this issue a while ago, though not an ArenaNet one, just to say “yeah, I didn’t expect they could do that”.
It happens a lot for my ranger when using a longbow
Where, how, and I want to check this out because I don’t seem to have this issue as much as you. I want to be able to replicate this.
Also as mentioned above as explained later about the grind line, which is often taken way out of context, they could have explained what colin was talking about a lot better and it would have saved them ALOT of backlash.
No it wouldn’t have. It just would have been heralded as “them making excuses” and trampled over all the same. Or calling them hypocrites just as much as is going on now.
Yeah, that was the part I went “this will be awesome if they can pull it off” and then I remembered this was to be an MMO. I probably wasn’t going to see it to the super-hyped-up extent people were drooling over.
. . . mostly because this isn’t my tabletop group, and I really don’t expect it to be possible short of doing that.
Question!
Hypothetically speaking, if I were to dip into the Sapphire Sanctum jumping puzzle this week, being from Stormbluff, would I be immediately whacked upon discovery or do I at least get to get to finish it and grab the chest before I am murdered?
Well it is, because what is said in that trailer simply is not the game.
I don’t hate the game, I just don’t being told I’m getting a banana cream pie to be suddently given a hershy’s kiss instead.
Yeah, that’s reaching with that analogy.
Didn’t this post already come around before? I mean, I even left messages on it any everything. Please tell me it’s not the meds again.
No you arnt nuts i posted in the last one too, they keep deleting them though. Apparantly they cant live with the fact that they lied in the video and its being brought up on the forums. Easy solution would be not to have lied in the first place.
. . . “lied” is what went on with WarZ. This is more “making promises they didn’t keep”, if you choose to see it that way. I saw it as ambitious, but ultimately doomed to fall short.
But then, I also like the game so I’m not qualified to talk about it

I’m stunned that anyone would prefer Spamadan to the Trading Post. I don’t even know what to say to that. After the first year I never even bothered selling my stuff, instead just threw it on one of my mules or gave them to friends. Having a system is infinitely better then no system at all.
I have a couple reasons to want interpersonal trading again.
First: Not having to have someone mail me payment for crafting them armor before I send it to them, or sending the armor and hoping they send me payment
Second: So I don’t have to send mail to a guildmate to share some Slaying Potions I got in a chest mid-dungeon. (I miss just being able to drop it on the ground.)
Third: As long as you weren’t rushing it wasn’t really possible to get scammed.
The centralized trading post is very useful but I would like the ability to do some back-alley dealing too.
I also think it’s funny how much people are lauding the difficulty of GW1.
The difficulty came in for the top 10% of the game. And of course, it came in so long as you didn’t, well, cheese the heck out of it.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved GW1. But there’s definitely some nostalgia warping memories.
Agreed.
I like that my character now feels more like a powerful hero rather then just one more person in a group of eight who is a pushover if he lost his healer.
Quoted because it’s so . . . so much how I feel. Sure, a thief prepared can still snap me like balsa wood . . . but I don’t feel in PvE that I need a healer or two stapled to my coat-tails.
I feel so bleh because seven years of playing that game and it’s moving on to the next one.
But I’ll get over it. I got over it when my copy of Link to the Past finally gave out :P
Lightbringer Tybalt Leftpaw: What part of “secret society” wasn’t explained to you?
edgeYou’re speculating, and ArenaNet denies it.
Back in reality, however, what has actually happened is the addition of more ways to remove ectoplasm from the economy.Didn’t we "speculate’ that loot drops were kittened up before the patch? Proove me wrong. Go play PvE (non meta boss or dragon events) for a week and see how many yellows, heck even greens, you get. Oh and lets see how much trash/nothing you get in between.
Either I have hit DR or the loot distribution is more kittened up (for me) than before.
I received a level 80 rare on the first mob I smacked yesterday. I think it was a level 4 spider. No, I am not kidding. I said to a friend on voice-chat “Sweet.. rare on my first kill”, so I happen to remember it.
I play about an hour or two a night and (if actively participating in events or what not) get at least one rare a session.
However, what does that really prove beyond the fact that rares still drop? Instead of me wasting time “proving you wrong”, why don’t you just prove you’re right? You, after all, seem to be the one with something to prove.
Like I said, I have not received even one rare weapon/armor since the patch, whereas I would before. I run around changing zones and try not to slay too many of the same enemies in a row. From my perspective something is suss.
Are you doing it on a character of at least level 40? I think the lowest level on Rares is 39.
I just want a tooltip for how much AR a person has equipped.
That I can deal with

I should count, but I generally play for 2-4 hours and have gotten 3 Rares (outside of event chests), 10-15 green, and more blue items than I could count (they are usually salvaged for space).
Of course, this is anecdotal no matter what kind of evidence I collect so don’t worry about it I also have practically the entire guild getting better than me out of event chests.
Weren’t the Titans Abaddon’s creations and the Domain of Anguish shut off the ability to make new ones?
Think of it like this, if you will:
At the end of the jumping puzzles, you have a chest. You want that chest, right? Now imagine that creatures that you can kill no longer drop treasure – only crafting mats specific to them (so in the case of the dragons, it would be a unique crafting mat) that you use to craft things (armor/weapons/gear) yourself. Suddenly, the loot in that treasure chest is that much more rewarding, because it could be anything in there that you might be able to instantly equip and use (or sell) as opposed to something you more than likely already have better than.
This . . . is a compelling idea. -takes notes-
Edit: I thought it sounded familiar. That’s how Etrian Odyssey and its sequels handle gear. Monsters drop items . . . not coin, items, and every time you sell a specific (unseen) listing of items new gear is unlocked. Bosses have very specific drops turning into very nice gear . . . but the store actually tracks how many of the boss drops have been sold – it can be “sold out”.

. . . has the original poster replied at all in this thread beyond the first few posts?
1 – I want to see “Broken Ones”. For the reference, there once was a PC game called “Ravenloft: Strahd’s Possession”. One of the more difficult enemies were called “Broken Ones”, which basically were this – victims of a magical accident which left them twisted into half-people, half beast in ways which were NOT like “centaurs” or such. The reason they were difficult? Real time battle system and these things were very fast and in large ambush groups.
Something akin to those, reminiscent of the Afflicted, would be fun to see.
2 – The Return of the Awakened. I want to see the Awakened and Palawa Joko. I want to go clean up that mess in Elona. I want to stand in the Garden of Seborhim again.
3 – Smite Crawlers. Because the troll in me wants to see these things come out and play again and hear the screams of frustration.
And people why is everyone ignoring my Skins should be what we grind for argument?
Because it’s an opinion. I can’t argue against your opinion. I can, however, present to you the facts. The facts are that we can, but are not required to, grind for stats. Content is not gated behind a series of gear checks only passable by those with BiS gear. Until this changes, the “this game is a grind” argument is a baseless one.
Its not mine opinion. Area Net said this.
Read my post before commenting.
So you keep saying. Prove it. Provide one link to a blog or interview in which ArenaNet says what you claim they say. Just. One. Link.
Edit: And I’m still waiting for you to provide factual evidence of what the “majority” want.
Are you kidding me? Okay fine I’ll find you many links with Anet saying that. I’m shocked that your telling me to find somthing so well known but fine.
So if I find a few links what then? Will I be right and will you be wrong?
Can you just find him the links and we’ll find out?
. . . I know I’ve heard it somewhere and am convinced you’re right that it came out of ArenaNet but I couldn’t put my finger on when. Honestly, I really wish they’d started . . .
(. . . aaaand I just had a thought which has made me sit right back down again. )
Finishing the above. “Wish they’d started with Ascended armor and put the art team to work making it look pretty.”
Yeah exactly, break the mold of only fighting on flat ground and then get back to us. Someone who plays warrior/guardian will never notice this because they are always on flat tarrian right beside the mobs.
I’m a ranger. I don’t fight on level terrain all the time, I generally try to be above my targets. I still don’t run into this with the exception of enemies which can’t path to me having insane health regeneration unless they had ranged attacks to fire back with.
I don’t understand what you are trying to say. Are you saying players who don’t put much time and effort into developing skill should be on top of a ladder or what? Im completely confused with your thoughts. I run into alot of casuals who play League. Its one of the most popular games in the world for a reason. Casuals play COOP vs AI and they enjoy it and there is constantly content (heros) coming out that offer new gameplay (all of which is free unlike GW2). Its seems like your hung up on your brothers gameplay and feel you have to play the game the way he does.
Not quite. I rambled quite a bit, but my point is that “cooperative versus AI” isn’t really playing the game. Stepping out of that box will be nothing but pain and tears for me, so really that’s the only option.
Some of the rares didn’t have upgrades, I take it?
Yes definitly. The ideal way to have done this would have been:
Grab lowest cost rares with upgrades that are maximum of 24s and no more.
Have entirely free Black Lion Salvage kits.Or even better farm 200 rares, get 8 stacks of free kits. ^^
But alas.. I didn’t have time or patience for that :P
I only noticed because the Kits should return an upgrade 100% of the time . . . and you didn’t have 200 upgrades. Which made me wonder what the heck happened . . . then I recalled picking up some rares in Fractals which had no upgrades
Yea sorry about that lol. Like I said it would have been best to do it that way, especially monetarily. 200 upgrades is always better than 157 haha.
. . . I would have chuckled all of them into the Forge. I’ve had decent luck with that lately, not so much with chucking in the blue junk. I started selling them again. sigh.
Lol well if you would like to donate about 50g, I’ll gladly do a Mystic Forge Rare test :P
I’d find that just as interesting, its too bad I don’t have like 300 gold, I’d test everything for fun haha. Maybe someday.. Someday! But then people will say “Why didn’t you just start your legendary?”, and I’ll have to do that too..
I can’t really donate the gold. Alas, the guild gets it first until we get to Guild Missions. :P
I could always donate rares but . . .

please remove invulnerable mobs.
the original guild wars one never had it.. . . yes it did. Though it would take the form of them being “friendly allies” until they attacked, they were still invulnerable until they gave their spiel. Or sometimes when the line of sight would be blocked on bridges . . .
Which would be a much better idea than what we have now because at least if they were friendly untill the fight they wouldnt be able to shoot at us while we are unable to shoot back and do damage.
I still have no idea where this is happening . . . I encounter it around water surface sometimes if I wind up fighting there but not anywhere else where something goes Invulnerable. I have had monsters “leash” back to start with an insane regen.
Among all the kitten flinging, I’m not sure if anyone has pointed out, there’s sort of a soft trinity.
Bruiser, Dps, Support
One Bruiser, and one support makes a world of difference in ease of the dungeon. Along with proper combo field usage.
This. I admit, I do get a giggle over the whole, “I love/hate the lack of trinity” when it hasn’t really gone anywhere. Even one of the devs referred to bunker builds as tanks at least twice in the last AMA. The only things that make it appear as a lack of trinity, is no outright dedicated healers, and an rng agro table.
It’s easy to slip into the parlance of the trinity (Tank, DPS, Healer) when they’re so fixed in the minds of developers and players as roles. How many of you build “a lil ‘tanky’” warrior? Or a “DPS” thief? I know someone who had a “healer” elementalist with water attunement.
While there is no classic trinity in this game, emulating it can get you far enough to succeed. It’s just not how the encounters are designed, to assume there’s a tank, DPS, and healer. It assumes there’s five players and balances accordingly.

I don’t buy into that. I feel the trend is moving far more towards horizontal than vertical progression. TF2 very active and the biggest online gaming phenomenas are MOBAs based around easy to attain progression and longevity established through the gameplay and variety of choices rather than power levels.
Yes, but I’m turned away from TF2 because I am an active liability to every team for not being quick enough to do much. Much the same on MOBAs such as League; I am nowhere near good enough to play League.
Purely skill-based games suffer from not being inclusive, despite giving people “leveled playing fields”. It still cannot be as bad as poker, which is also almost purely skill-based and claims a lot of unsuspecting players every year.
League has COOP vs AI. It caters to everyone. Even if your bad and want to play PvP, you can play solo and your ranking will drop you into a skill bracket you belong in, which uses a rating system similar to ELO.
I know about League. My brother plays it a lot and is climbing his way into Gold Bracket 5 (I think it’s the lowest one) tonight. I know enough about the play to know I cannot realistically play this game. I am too disadvantaged by my inability to micro or keep adequate map awareness.
It doesn’t cater to everyone. It caters to the elite and the skilled but allows everyone else to play kitten little matches to satisfy their desire to be “in” on the popular game. It caters to the people who take it way too seriously and spend hours daily honing their skills. The progression of the game is unsuitable for casual players, who will always be stuck at the bottom so the elite can stay on top easier.
Not everyone likes carrot and stick game play. Just because that’s the current ‘generic’ doesn’t mean it has to be.
This can be turned around to “pure skill based games” like MOBA. Not everyone likes those either. And FPS games like TF2, much the same. I meet people who absolutely abhor chess, and that’s as close to pure skill as you can get.
Also, I can perhaps see the carrot you’re talking about, but where’s the stick?
Yes, but I’m turned away from TF2 because I am an active liability to every team for not being quick enough to do much. Much the same on MOBAs such as League; I am nowhere near good enough to play League.

Of course they are inclusive. You just need to play with people of your skill level that’s all.
Is there a group of people who have the skill level “stinks like durian”?

How bout give everyone equal stats and let skill and effort decide who deserves to win/move through content?
Because, generally speaking, those games tend to turn away far more people than they keep. They can be beautiful, wonderful games . . . but if people can’t play them then they won’t.
Oh, here’s what I do.
I check the clock, realize my Dailies should recycle soon so I put aside the piles of paperwork I have to slog through for my actual paid job.
I log in, see what the Daily requirements are and think about it before picking one of my characters to focus on and a direction to send them off in. Preferably some direction I won’t get bored in, which has sometimes meant WvW for “Veterans, Events, Kill Count, Variety” and such.
I listen to see if the guild is doing a dungeon run, since I’m always up for spending time with them. Maybe they just want to do Claw of Jormag or something, so I’ll hop over there and do it and maybe scour Frostgorge for those four Tier 6 material nodes.
About an hour after we’re done with that, I ask if anything else is going on . . . if not, I log out and go back to crunching out paperwork.
On the rare days I actually have time to call my own, I find something else interesting to do. Such as my charr’s personal story, or poking around on my elementalist to try . . . yet again . . . to get a good feel for the class. (I failed miserably during Beta Weekends so I shelved it as a class I’d try out. Along with thief. I simply can’t do a thief justice.)
I don’t have problem with world bosses drop decent loots but the bosses are too boring. Anet should redesign the fight and make it more challenging.
Have a +1, as I wholeheartedly agree. There could be some redesigns to these events to make them more interesting for the mobs of people who crush in on them and reduce them to “just don’t die and keep firing”.
I settled for exotics when Legendary weapons were “available”, and will continue to do so until I can actually get the parts together. As such . . . I like to think I’m a realist. Realistically, I’m not earning that Legendary or affording it anytime soon so just get comfortable and don’t think about “could have been shredding things with that awesome Twilight if I wasn’t poor”.
Ascended equipments aren’t prestige items. They are simply the BiS items in the game as when exotics were back then. If they maintained exotics as the BiS gear, with its variety of methods to be acquired, then there is no problem if they introduce equipments that only bears distinct advantage in strict situations (such as agony resistance).
Saying that one should be content on having exotics because ascended isn’t necessary is like stopping at level 98 in other MMOs when the max level is 99.
No offense, but in one game I stopped at 4500 when the max level was 9999. It just wasn’t worth the grind and the power difference was much easier to make up in other methods.
Although it doesn’t affect you as you are ok with it, technically, you’ve merely decided to settle [quit] at a certain point because not finishing the game as originally intended by the design doesn’t bother you. Like deciding to stop reading a book or watching a series halfway through because you have an idea on how it’s gonna end anyway.
Technically it’s more like hearing that one spoiler which makes you realize the rest of the series after your current point isn’t worth watching,. Kind of like what I do (with great relish) to people watching Lost, Fringe, or X-Files. There is something about watching the crushing despair when they realize their hopes aren’t going to be met.
By the way, there are tons of people who agree with me that Wheel of Time was a great series so long as you don’t go past book . . . four? . . . Or that you pretend Highlander only had one movie, no TV series, and no sequels.
I’m not talking about Ascended gear here, and I sincerely doubt you know the game series I’m talking about. Trust me, you would hate it, it’s grind-tastic.
Disgaea comes to mind. There are benefits to grinding to level 9999, and then rebirthing your chars to level 1 and do it again a couple times :p
It was! And I weep for the hours which were sunk into that game when I had my PSP and public transit . . . I look at the number and go “wow what the he-double-hockey-stick?!” . . .
But, I think it was proven to me it was more efficient to level to around 2500 and reincarnate from there rather than go all the way up every time. You stored levels the same regardless, and if you could level to 2500 four timms in significantly less time than to level to 9999 once (rounded of course), then it proved much better off for you.
And yes, for the record, I did admit to playing a game which was “grindy as a pepper mill”. And I found it good distracting fun for public transit at four hours a day and seven days a week.
No offense, but in one game I stopped at 4500 when the max level was 9999. It just wasn’t worth the grind and the power difference was much easier to make up in other methods.
If the power increase from this items isn’t important, remove them. They are clearly useless and unwanted.
I’m not talking about Ascended gear here, and I sincerely doubt you know the game series I’m talking about. Trust me, you would hate it, it’s grind-tastic.
I really wish I had encountered this so I could weigh in . . . the only time I had this happen was close to the surface of water some time ago, or “Obstructed” in one direction (me shooting them) but not in the other (them shooting me) . . . generally off a wall in WvW.
I settled for exotics when Legendary weapons were “available”, and will continue to do so until I can actually get the parts together. As such . . . I like to think I’m a realist. Yes yes ascended gear isn’t that much better but takes so much time to acquire. If it was like an ascended level item I can wait for a couple of weeks to get a piece. However, GW2’s initial design was to have us get BiS stats we want easily (exotics), so we can focus on doing the things we want such as wvw and fashion (legendaries) without having to worry about being left behind in stat progression. It was understandable back then that legendaries are difficult to get, they are prestige items afterall. When they introduced ascended and how limited our means to acquire them is, they ruined the game’s image imho. Regardless of how much you defend that it isn’t “necessary”, it will always be the BiS item and gives some advantage.
People who exclusively plays wvw back then didn’t have to worry about missing out on PvE events because they can get the same BiS stats just by doing wvw. By being forced to do dailies and dungeons just so they wouldn’t get left behind.
It’s silly for people to say it isn’t necessary. Nothing in the game is necessary. But the fact that it gives any form of advantage via stats defeats the original concept on horizontal progression that anet made me buy the game in the first place. Settling for exotics when better equipments are available is like being a defeatist or an underachiever.

this argument falls flat. just because wvwvw is often 1 sided doesn’t mean you should just say “well kitten it” and not even attempt to make it balanced 1v1.
this is the logic that has given us superpowered thieves/mesmers/eles for the past 6 months.
I seem to recall ANet saying once before “we don’t try to completely balance WvW”. So they’re not attempting to make it completely balanced.
By the way, some of those “superpowered” thieves/mesmers/eles have been good pickings if I catch them roaming 1v1. Especially anywhere near a cliff.
forgive me if i don’t believe stories from the guy who thought players got equal gear in world vs world.
my main gripe is the unbalance in wvwv. i don’t care about fractals. i just want some decent pvp.
Forgive me if you used “PvP” to mean “WvW” just to trap me with that. Classy.
i thought it was obvious that world vs world was the only pvp zone with ascended gear.
Well it would be obvious except there’s already a section of the game marked "PvP’. Which is different than WvW by a not-insignificant amount.
last time i checked the wvwvw forums are in the pvp section… because you know… it’s a pvp zone…
Last time I checked, it plays by PvE rules, because . . . it’s also PvE?
it doesn’t know what it is and that;s why it blows so much. the mobs and nodes should be removed and balance should be added.
anyway your defense is really failing so you should probably just give up. wvwvw is primarily a pvp zone and always will be despite the random pve elements that make no sense.
. . . you listed WvW as PvP and not WvW and then decided to skewer me over me calling WvW “PvP” as you did before you suddenly changed the term up just to laugh.
If I act defensible it’s because you went and swapped my Coke for Diet Coke and laughed that I must have poured Diet Coke for myself when I didn’t like it.
pvp means player vs player. please explain how wvwvw is not pvp.
There is a section of the game marked “PvP”, there is a section marked “WvWvW” which is usually shortened to “WvW”. So far in talking with people, they have been content to call “WvW” by that and “PvP” is reserved for that section. You know, “Heart of the Mists” in-game.
So when is player-versus-player not “PvP”? When there are two sections of the game which contain potential player-versus-player and only one of them is labeled specifically “PvP”.
Honestly, really, it’s my fault for not making absolutely sure you were on the same page as me in your terminology. I’m going to have to go back to being a pedant about nomenclature, I see, or risk being called a moron over a mistake. Such as “Maw” meaning “Jade Maw” and not “Frozen Maw”.
this argument falls flat. just because wvwvw is often 1 sided doesn’t mean you should just say “well kitten it” and not even attempt to make it balanced 1v1.

If I act defensible it’s because you went and swapped my Coke for Diet Coke and laughed that I must have poured Diet Coke for myself when I didn’t like it.
this argument falls flat. just because wvwvw is often 1 sided doesn’t mean you should just say “well kitten it” and not even attempt to make it balanced 1v1.
this is the logic that has given us superpowered thieves/mesmers/eles for the past 6 months.

Agony Resistance I’ll give you, though so far that’s sectioned off in a little corner of the game I never have to deal with, and neither does anyone else.
Roaming in WvW is subject to so many other things which feed into it that I’m not even going to get into it. Suffice it to say, if you are roaming WvW alone and have to fight more than one person, you are better off running for cover instead of fighting. And even if you have to fight one person, don’t take them on their terms, take them on yours.
I have to deal with it. So it is important to me. Just because you don’t do something doesn’t mean it isn’t as important. In those 1v1 fights sometimes it does come down to that little extra stat increase from gear.
Fix your quote attribution, it’s me who said that.

Dailies give me 4500 Karma, one Mystic Coin (which I’ve not used any yet since I don’t know what they are for or where I can use them),
Mystic Coins are used in special recipes at the Mystic Forge. Generally you can make unique exotic weapons with them. Look on the Wiki for “Mystic Weapons”.
They also are an integral part of getting Legendary pieces.
