The Silverwastes are REALLY bad

I agree, they’re pretty bad.

But mostly because I can’t choose a district/instance and can get shunted repeatedly into a dead instance where nothing is happening. And if that’s the case, I can’t do many events defending the forts because they’re not balanced for a single player to hold things off very well.

Other than that, I really kind of enjoy the map. In small doses. Which is just about how I enjoy the rest of the game – in small bursts of activity, then take a break until the next day.

Mawdrey 2 - the best dev idea ever

in Living World

Posted by: Tobias Trueflight.8350

Tobias Trueflight.8350

Unless you are talking about the Mawdrey skin it was one of the worse ideas ever because the situation with the excess bloodstone dust shouldn’t be occurring in the first place.

You are right, but I think this is an intent. They for some reason love to have inbalace in resource accessibility.

I think it’s simple. And not entirely by conscious design.

There’s so much Bloodstone because it has the easiest acquisition method – it’s incredibly easy to farm tons of it, or get tons of it as a byproduct of other farming. See, it mostly comes from champion bags, which are also one of the ways to get several nice pieces of valuable loot. Or even desirable loot – the exotic skins.

So you have Bloodstone guaranteed out of all the champion loot bags, rather than a random drop (like Dragonite and Empyreal Fragments are). But because you only need so much of it, and can only transform it at a set way . . . and it cannot be traded . . .

Well, you have a ton of it gathering on people as a byproduct of play. Largely as intended, because it’s not supposed to be the bottleneck for Ascended crafting. No, that’s supposed to be the Insignia and last-tier materials themselves.

Hence, you see this situation develop where people make Bloodstone Dust hand-over-fist as they farm other things. Mawdrey II was a sink which offers up some reward when you no longer need the Dust, or if you never plan on using it. Then the Star of Gratitude was created so you could sink Empyreal Fragments . . . because those are earned out of world chests.

Now the only one without a sink is Dragonite Ore.

And I don’t know if you were around, but this is not the first time a material sink was introduced into the game. The Bazaar of the Four Winds was where they got the sudden realization of how much silk, mithril, elder wood, and thick leather people actually farmed up. (Hint, it was a lot more than the Tier One materials.) The material sink there was trading off stacks of extra stuff for RNG boxes.

(GODS I wish I hadn’t turned in silk at all, but at the time it was actually pretty worthless.)

  • I’m 34 years old, and roughly 2/3 of that has been spent around computers and gaming. As such, my first actual gaming PC was a Texas Instruments 99/4a unit with expansion box and tape drive. My second was an IBM PC jr, and my third was a “let’s put extra parts together and get this working so you can stop hogging Daddy’s PC” special.
  • I’ve been playing MMOs since the first one to hit the net, though I gave a wide berth to World of Warcraft due to not wanting to spend money on a subscription fee. Already playing GuildWars at the time may have contributed.
  • I’ve played consoles for a large chunk as well, but around the time of the XBox 360 I kind of deviated from it due to console games moving away from what I enjoyed.
  • I’ve written two things which have been published, though on a strictly local basis. One was a nonfiction article, the other was short form fiction. I continue to write lightly as a hobby and to keep my skill sharp but I have neither time or money to spend chasing anything more than hobbyist writing.

Bag/bank space should cost gold, not gems

Tobias Trueflight.8350

The ‘time and gold are free’ argument is just so kitten ridiculous, that I see no need to argue it in depth. It is patently obvious that it is wrong. If gold was free, then gems would be free. And if time meant nothing, then why do people pay real money to make up for it?

See, there you go, going to the absolute furthest leap ahead of any sort of logic and making your counter argument look absurd. “If gold is free, gems are free” is just . . . no. You knew better before you typed it, because you’re more intelligent than that.

And time means different things to different people for different uses of the time. Time spent with my buddies playing several games of Magic is different than time spent mowing the lawn, or scrubbing pots, or painting my minature collection.

Even in the game, time spent with guildmates doing something enjoyable or chattering while sitting in LA or DR is different than hoping the RNGod smiles on me and bestows unto me Dawn or Twilight.

(And not the thrice-darned book…)

Time has no universal absolute value which can be put on it, aside from “one minute is sixty seconds”.

its not really absurd at all. Just because you enjoy your time spent doesnt mean it isnt valuable.

I enjoy drawing, does that mean i should give out drawings for free? nope. Many doctors genuinely enjoy helping people, should they work for free? nope.

wether you have fun or not is completely irrelevant to the value of time, or whether it is worth money.
but forget being worth money, because regardless, time is an extremely valuable commodity, regardless of money, its probably the most valuable commodity anyone actually has.

Oh, that’s definitely better than “come over and do work for me for free, since it’s ‘just’ time being spent”.

560g? At 14g per 100 gems? That’s 4000 gems. Slipped a decimal point somewhere?

I will admit to being about four glasses of wine down on it when I ran the math. In my head. Mea culpa, I’ll change it.

(Yes. I do admit mistakes.)

And by free I think most of us using that argument means money isn’t being paid to ANet for that purchase. Sure those gems were bought by someone who then traded them for gold but once traded by the original buyer, it has no value to ANet, at least toward their bottom line.

Are you sure on that? It still has value, or rather it had value at one point. That is of more import to figuring out an absolute value which is what would need to be discussed when evaluating how to price these expansion purchases. Just because cash was not recently traded, doesn’t mean it stops being relevant cash was traded. It still happened. (If a concessions stand pays for something and holds onto it for two months, it still has value even if that money was spent last month and not in the latest invoices.)

What we are looking at here is one side saying they should be allowed to skirt the need for real money to enter into purchasing the Bag/Bank slots. People have pointed out, and I’ll join in . . . that is already the case. This is being asked for something which already exists.

If it’s liked, I’ll even set aside the concerns of what “win” is being paid for here or how it’s another unnecessary thing people just want quick access to.

Because the heart of the problem I’m having parsing this whole thing with “we just want it to cost gold” is that it already can cost gold through conversion.

People really need to give up this Time = Gold = Free falsehood. It is ridiculous…

Hey, I have some work that needs doing. Anyone want to do it? You will only use up your time, so of course I will pay you nothing.

The time is free if it’s play you’d be doing anyways. If you’re playing angrily for maximum gold efficiency, then I might suggest you can get better hourly elsewhere.

Shhhh, he’s trying to stretch to validate a point which might be valid . . . if he paid enough attention to change the direction he was going with this.

The “Time = Gold = Free” is indeed a bit of a falsehood, in regards to there being ‘no cost’. On the other hand, it’s skirting two particular issues which people who are in favor of the change are ignoring.

1 – The Bag/Bank Expanders are in the Gem Store and thus it’s always going to have real money used to pay for it. Even Gems bought through Gold do come from somewhere – they do not exist in a vacuum. Taking them out of the store and putting them up for just Gold means they no longer have a real money value and now need to have an arbitrary Gold value attached to make it more in line with what value ANet has set on the items.

(In case you’re wondering, it’ll probably be very high and thus not reachable without grinding Gold. Why? Because it’s set at 400 Gems. If you do the math, that’s currently something like 14g for 100 Gems, which translates into 56g. If they set it at a Gold value just as is, do you think it would be less or more than that amount?

So you’d have to grind gold . . . or you could buy Gems and transmute them to Gold in order to buy something which you used to be able to buy with Gems in the first place. And you’d have to buy more Gems since the conversion of Gems to Gold is not as good. I don’t quite see a win in this situation.)

2 – Whether or not someone values their time to sit down and make Gold with their time is irrelevant to the value of the item. It’s already been valued and the desire to own it corroborates the notion it has value. So it’s not valueless, therefore work must be done to acquire it, and you’re just quibbling on whether it’s worth $20 of your wages (which you earned with time away from the game) or X hours of game play (devoted only to earning Gold).

I don’t know about you, but my time spent earning wages is not as valuable as the time I spend playing the game to . . . you know . . . relax? . . .

1 – Why shouldn’t they?

2 – Who says they drop on an even basis for all players, at all times? Especially as some places the salvage item drops do not always include cloth salvage items . . .

1. Because they are different items, with different drop rates and different uses.
2. Youre right. I get more silk than leather on a general basis.

So should silk drop less or more?

It’s fine when there’s also a nodes to get some guaranteed basic materials by spending time instead grinding then spending coin.

So running from 1 silk node to the next should be implemented to avoid having to grind gold to buy it?

I dont even….

People really keep posting things that others haven’t been saying . . .

He’s saying you shouldn’t have to go farm gold to the extent it currently is held at. Something needs to change, be it adding some sort of node or other output or lowering the materials of Spools.

At least, that’s what I’m seeing.

And other outputs were introduced, which lead to silk losing 40% of its value over the last 4 months.

And it’s still outside the range for the rest of its peers. Especially leather, for which . . . I’m sorry, I’m sorry, is incredibly cheap. NINE COPPER per piece. And it also doesn’t have a “node” to harvest from. But compare it to Silk Scrap right now at 2s 27c . . . that’s over twenty times as expensive.

Of course, as I said earlier in this topic – it’s not the only oddity going on, but Silk is the extreme outlier in the case of what the Black Lion trade value is among its peers.

So borderline pay to win.

lolno. You don’t need 8 bag slots on every character, or even on one character, to win anything. It’s “pay to hoard”.

Pay to hoard? Or pay for convenience. So what do you do instead? trash every item you can’t fit? waste time very 5 seconds you’re in a dungeon selling the loot, so often than you cant run the dungeon?

I already mentioned what I did. I carry some Salvage Kits with me and white/blue items get broken down. Bags get opened. I send crafting components to the bank storage regularly and keep track of whether I am full on anything. (Usually Bloodstone or Dragonite.)

Green gets held onto to sell. Rares will get checked to see if I got the skin yet, then broken down for the Ectoplasm (which gets deposited). Exotics . . . I don’t see often enough to have a rule for. “Stick in invisible bag and forget about it until later.”

Junk trophies I will throw out a small (1-2) stack if I need to. Green runes/sigils will be discarded if they’re a space issue. Rare runes/sigils are saved for Mystic Forge.

When do I spend time to break this stuff down? You know that period during a fight where you can pretty much stand still and auto attack without being at risk? Yeah. Also there’s usually time to click this stuff apart in small bursts. Rarely do I have total nonstop action even in WvW. (In fact, most commanders I follow do have “sell breaks”.)

I suppose the fact I don’t spend hours on hours doing this stuff is probably one reason I don’t have the problem of inventory space.

I still think the gem-to-gold and gold-to-gem conversion rates are absurd.

I honestly wouldn’t mind them having a $15/month fee to play and just get rid of the gem store altogether.

Can’t think of a single game that has a sub but not the equivalent of the gem store. Can you name some?

Dark Age of Camelot never had a gem store for over 10 years. I don’t think WoW, WAR, or Aion had gem stores either, but it’s been a while and they may have added them. All of those games had monthly fees, however. GW2 is the first mmo I’ve played without a monthly fee, and it’s also the first mmo I’ve played that has a gem store.

EverQuest did/does not have a Gem Store when I was playing, but it did have a rather hefty subscription fee (at the time). Ultima Online also did not have a Gem Store I’m aware of.

Dungeons and Dragons Online, however . . . was built entirely around its method of grabbing you by the wallet and shaking a little money out of you at a time.

You should probably check the definition of “lucrative”. It’s not really subjective when (almost) all the choices can be measured with a common currency, like gold.

The fact that you have almost everything in the game does not mean that the bag of laurels is still the most lucrative choice from the chest of loyalty. Not the most “interesting” or “exciting” perhaps, but certainly the most lucrative.

And, meaning little disrespect, you should read my post again . . . I don’t have everything in the game, or almost everything. Just that I can’t buy with Gold what I want, nor want anything which would require me to go fetch tons of Gold with Laurels.

It’s really not about the money.

There is no such thing as “enough Laurels” as long as you can turn each Laurel into ~1 gold. That’s ~20 gold right there, which you can use to buy the contents of the other selections and still have money left over (unless of course you’d be lucky to get 2 damask, which probably happens about 1 time out of every 8 or so).

Sorry to break your illusion of meaningful choice, but not selecting the laurel bag from the Chest of Loyalty is just throwing gold out of the window.

You should read my other posts, you’ll get a better idea of what I’m about. I don’t care if it’s an “illusion of meaningful choice”. The game’s full of such illusions, from what you want to choose when you create your character to what order you choose, to what dyes you want to use.

I don’t care about Gold – there is nothing I want bad enough which is out of reach. I’m not interested in Legendaries, so Precursors are off the slate. The permanent contracts? The only one of potential value to me is the permanent bank contract so I can stick it in my bag and potentially just carry less around.

By extension, things which earn me Gold aren’t as interesting because they earn me Gold as they are for what I can do with them. Crafting components are interesting because I can make items with them, hang onto them until I need them. Karma lets me drop Temple Armor at a whim on a fresh Level 80, but that’s about it. Dungeons only interest me when I run them within the guild and with less intent to speed-clear it than to just make it to the end alive.

Further by extension, I do things because I want to do them. Which includes even doing more than logging in, saying hello and adjusting a few items around my character inventories. I don’t want to hit a world boss? Skip it. Don’t feel like dealing with Claw of Jormag? I’ll just find something else to do – the game’s full of that.

About the only thing I fully regret is not getting in on a good Triple Trouble run when it was a hot thing to do. Never got to experience that.

Not really, it gives more than one item. The first time it was Damask, the second it was Elonian Leather.

The only way choosing the Ascended Mats is more lucrative than the bag of 20 laurels is if you really have trouble getting T7 mats (which you shouldn’t after SW was launched) or if you feel lucky enough to score two bolts of damask every time.

It’s not about lucrative for me. It’s about “I have enough Laurels, and the other stuff doesn’t interest me right now”.

No, no, it was about how it’s pay to win.

I think. I don’t know, I need another drink.

..no need to compare to gw1, I’ve not played it.

and the need to beat the boss after you’ve lost the achieve, is more infuriating than restarting.

and I get it… complete the entire instant.

but answer me this, if you can do the previous rooms perfectly…what do you gain by repeating the them?

GW 1 was worse. If you failed a mission you had to restart it period. There was no save your spot. If your party wiped you were starting over.

Bear in mind, a lot of missions in GW1 were also kinda short. Though difficulty spiked in a few places, and some where incredibly long (Prophecies missions notably were the offenders here).

And not everyone is willing to buy the cloth

Some players will completely ignore the trading post, and only consider what they get from drops, nodes and other gameplay sources.

That’s honestly what I do, or try to do. I’ve lately bought a few helpings but mostly because my time is more important than my gold. (Limited play time will do that.) And as a medium-armor main I rarely run directly into the bottleneck of Damask. But I do nonetheless notice it – I need 3 pieces for each insignia after all!

Most of the cloth comes from salvaging, not everyone has light armor characters at all tier ranges to salvage cloth from drops, but everyone can get wood and (metal) of all tiers, and since leather is less used and “hunting game” creatures drop salvageable leather fairly often, leather has no problems either.

. . . you meant metal.

As for needing light armor classes, never really noticed. I did drop research twice for myself on how often I see light armor versus someone else with a light armor class and my warrior. The difference was (if I recall) 2-5 pieces over the course of 100 drops. With most of my gear loot coming out of Silverwastes, though, and loot boxes not being affected by this weighted drop mechanic . . . so I was given to understand anyway . . . it became irrelevant quickly. I want gear to salvage? Silverwastes for half an hour doing events. I rack up quite a lot.

Why should be cloth the “bottleneck” material halting progress? It’s a basic material. People should not craft slower, but because they keep running out of cloth, but because they need more fine materials or better.

Really, I found Tier 4 a worse bottleneck and it was in Fine materials. But yeah, cloth nodes or some way of getting scraps would be nice. Too bad it’s a bit late to work it in well.

tons of gold is great advantage in WvW, and it was intended to be.
With infinite gold, you can probably get a full map of people playing on your dime.
You can have as much HQ seige as you want
you can outfit all of your soldiers in ascended
you can maintain non stop food buff trays at every castle.

Technically, the top one? You can do with real money outside the game. Always could. HQ siege? I understand the Guild ones are much better and easier to get your hands on.

Outfit all soldiers in ascended? Sure. And when they play like trash because they think they have the best edge, and get smashed, it’ll be hilarious to watch the QQ. I don’t know why people still pretend it’s a huge advantage worth paying for. Not when your enemy can win WvW by simply, well, not being where you are and evading a zerg they don’t want to fight. Or splitting coverage.

Finally, and you didn’t talk about upgrades. Sad. I expected that to be your first point.

Bringing up spvp, is a bit pointless as it is the only facet of the game designed not to give any advantages at all.

Yup, so that’s a nice chunk of the game infinite gold/loot space isn’t important in. Glad you noticed.

but yes, gold is in the game, so that players can trade in game value, by having infinite gold, you can get everything of value that players can trade. Some things of value actually are advantageous.

Of course some things of value are. But how much of that can be purchased with infinite gold which can’t be purchased with finite gold?

Second, actually read the suggestions tobias. They’re suggestions to punish those who die, and then sit there for minutes or longer until someone picks them up. It’s those people who are being targeted. If you die and promptly waypoint, you’re not the intended target. If you die and sit there for 5 minutes because you’re too lazy to run back, you’re the intended target. Frankly it’s sad. Events like Teq and THW pay out in GOLD kitten . You would have to be utter crap in combat and die 60+ times in 10-15 minutes before you’re “losing” money waypointing on death at these events.

I did read it. However, I don’t have faith in the system to properly determine the difference, thanks. Bugs happen, and unintended code effects sometimes goes a while before it’s fixed because it takes some time to track down then replicate. I know this, so why would I chance adding something like “WP soon or lose everything”?

Frankly the WvW system would be best. If you arent revived within 20 seconds, you get shunted to the closest waypoint, and STAY dead, regardless of how close you were to being revived.

Do you stay dead in WvW if the timer runs out? I never actually let it run down. But yes, this particular method was the only one which seems fair to transplant. If you must do so at all.

I still think, however, doing these things are going to prompt more people to find a safe place to stand and AFK instead.

Yet iron still costs way less than linen, because it’s reliably farmable from (rich) iron nodes.

True, and there’s the other side of it too . . .

Linen is mostly of use two ways – on the tier it’s part of (Tier 4) and in Ascended. Now, I don’t know about you but I found Tier 4 had an anomalously high price point for Fine materials and base materials even.

For instance, Smooth Scale (80 copper) is worth roughly twice as much as Scale (45 copper) and Large Scales are worth 1s 89c. Weird, huh? It’s not like Large Scales tend to fall out of the sky in any high-level zones . . . wait, they kinda do. I literally fill up on them rather consistently. I had more Large Scales than Pristine Snowflakes until I finished up some Crafting disciplines.

But weirder things happen in the metal market. Darksteel Ingots 4s 27c versus Steel Ingots, 4s 42c . . . very weird it costs less for Tier 4 than Tier 3. Even more curious is how Iron Ingots are 4s 7c. Metal is so weird a market, Gold Ore sells at 84c . . . whew, it still makes little sense to me.

Cloth? Oh goodness, no nodes means it’s crazy what happens to it. Jute, Tier 1, is at 1s currently. Seriously.

I don’t know why there was no nodes for cloth materials, I really have no idea. But that and the notion I have of how many light armored classes are out there for farming purposes? I think that’s where a lot of the scarcity comes from. And why Damask is still going to be fairly stable at “oh Dwayna why?” for a long while.

There is a rather good way to farm wool. And I was sitting on a nice fat pile of Karma until I started making a serious attempt to work up a second character and bought his Temple Armor.

How do you farm wool? Well, there’s some centaur camps in northern Gendarren Fields where supply wagons are parked . . . supply wagons you can kill, and drop a bag of loot every time when they fall apart. Scraps of Wool are in the loot table fairly well-weighted. Not only that but the supply bags off centaurs there also drop Scraps of Wool.

Not that difficult. Or you can promote yourself some Jute – you’re not using it for anything else are you?

. . . also, Iron Ore is heavily inflated due to being used for two tiers of gear outside of Ascended. It’s used in Iron weapons and the following Steel tier; this means you need a lot of Iron Ore to craft up through those two tiers. Hence, it’s more expensive to buy outright.

Again, unless you promote yourself some Copper Ore.

As for Cotton, Linen and Wool? You can use karma to get those and you get enough karma playing in SW (if you don’t just chest farm) and I’m willing to bet the new zones will be packed full with events for even more karma income.

. . . I’m curious as to how? I know a couple quick ways to ensure Wool and Cotton, but Linen has been an odd one.

I just make it a point to declare that during Tequatl, Silverwastes, etc. People should not be ressing the fulling dead and that the dead should WP and get back.

And that makes infinite sense to me.

Did you seriously just bless this?

You guys at ANet designed this game to be a team effort and took away dedicated Healers/Revivers and gave us ALL the ability to res each other to encourage Team Work.

Now you just threw everyone under the bus since now the “WP if you’re Dead/Don’t res the Dead” group can now say “ANet says so.”

I can not believe you did that.

I can. I’ve seen her at big events with ANet tag on and not telling people “WP if you’re dead” to cut it out.

Besides “making sense” doesn’t mean people shouldn’t be doing it. I mean, let’s be honest . . . buying Keys and using them never made sense. Ever. Still gets done daily

Man your forgetting about all the items that are worth more then the salvage materials…… Not that I have seen many of those myself tbh

Edit
If your talking about rare/exotics you can tp those from anywere Chrispy.

Supposedly certain Dire/Berserker stat combination items are. But I haven’t seen a reason not to salvage/vendor them due to TP fees.

As for rares? Salvage em. The ecto is often more valuable.

Exotics? Tough call but I tuck em away to look at later. I don’t see all that many.
