POLL: Would you like level cap to be raised?

Tolmos.8395

So the real question is not whether or not anyone “wants” it to be increased.

That is a stupid question.

It’s whether or not it “should” be increased.

There is no definitive “should”. Many of us have already played the MMOs that were destroyed by level cap increases, so we know the answer to that question is “no, it should not be increased”. And yet others (though far, FAR fewer in number) argue just as vehemently that they know the answer is “yes, it should be increased”.

At the end of the day, all of that just comes down to both sides stressing what they want by using any reasoning they can grasp to justify it. Both sides could write 10 page thesis papers based entirely on valid fact as to why their side should be the correct answer, and in the end it won’t change anything. Because what that really shows is that we all just want things to be a certain way, and will try our best to prove that way is right.

I don’t expect you to understand, but thems the facts. You just don’t like them.

I don’t think anyone here but you understands why WoW doing something makes it a core design principle for GW2 that would require the questioning of Anet’s sanity if they broke from it. >_>

Unless that is a sneaky way of calling this game a WoW clone at heart?

Because so far, raising the level cap is only something they stated an intention of doing… around the same time they stated “no grind”, “account bound dye” and several other “core” principles that went out the window. So them changing that and sticking with a level plateau system more akin to this game’s predecessor, instead of the level raising system of its direct competitor, would hardly be the end of the world you are making it out to be.

Don’t argue negatives. If the level cap needs to be raised, state why.

I’ve done that from day one and ever since.

The level cap needs to be raised because that has been established as the de-facto form of character progression.

Not only does it take you handily through all of the zones, but it also progresses your personal story. With new zones, and presumably an extension of personal story, the well-established leveling paradigm would be used to continue that progression.

Players would be confused if it happened any other way, and rightly so.

So your argument is “It’s always been done that way, therefor it must always be done that way?” That’s incredibly weak. The Holy Trinity was established as the de-facto form of MMO combat, do we need that implemented as well? Do we need all the other paradigms of MMO games, or can we get away with making some intelligent new leaps here? As I’ve stated, increasing the level cap is a remnant of skinner box sub games, and ALL it serves to do is slow players down to give the illusion of content being larger than it is. My street isn’t longer because the speed limit gets lowered, it just takes me longer to get to my house. Personal Story can progress just fine without increasing the level cap, as evidenced by the fact that by the time you get to the end of the existing personal story, many players (myself included) are already max level. And yet we still do it! Funny how a story guides itself regardless of reward. Either that, or I only read Lord of the Rings to increase my Literacy stat. As for guiding players through zones, I find the existing mechanics of dynamic events and hearts to be more than sufficient, and boredom with/completion of one zone will naturally lead a player to the next, regardless of being forced there to continue leveling.

Innovation is the key to moving forward, not rehashing ideas that have had their day.

Plus, just because WoW does something does not have to make it the industry standard. Sometimes doing something a little different is better.

Sadly, I agree.

Remember the 11000+ post mega-thread opposing Ascended gear? And they did it anyway, and then closed the thread saying we’d all “had our say”?

Yep, and then immediately told us in a blog post how “wildly successful” ascended gear was. =D

I’ll give em this- if GW2 fails they can always go into car sales. They would be awesome at it.

I wouldn’t call it clever, so much as misleading. Purposefully misleading, at that.

I dunno, if they ended that sentence with " and throws it out the window" it would be pretty spot on!

Female/male toons

I play male characters. And they always look as close to me as humanly possible.

Why? I suppose I have no imagination. I never play anything but male humans. lol. I just can’t see myself being anything other than a male human. :-P

I’m a male who chooses female characters in just about any game where the option is available. For me it has to deal with real life implications. The fact that women have been oppressed (and still are in some cases) just disgusts me. So this subconscious feeling of hate towards our history always drives me to pick female characters to watch them succeed in whatever story/game.

It’s a little joy, but I can’t take it too seriously of course. It’s just fiction. Nevertheless, point stands.

lolwut? I waited your entire post for the punchline… but it never came. >_>

So how would haveing it negative effect you.

  • Make current level 80 content obsolete, especially in the area of rewards
  • Make all current armor obsolete, resetting the gear grind from start so we can do it all over again
  • And that gear grind will be AFTER the new level grind, which all players will be subjected to
  • Introduce a power creep far worse than anything ascended gear and another tier of gear could ever do
  • Pointlessly undo all the work ANet has put into current class balance, as new levels will also bring with it new balance issues
  • Pointlessly gate content for no other reason than a lack of ingenuity to create content that doesn’t match WoW’s level for level

They’re obviously going to get raised if you follow the interviews, and it doesn’t matter to me. I honestly don’t care since I’m all about content.

This, unfortunately, is true. The entire post is moot. Even though all but a handful of people on here are saying “NO”, the first time I’ve seen people who both love and despise Ascended gear actually agreeing wholeheartedly, this level cap raise will still happen.

And as long as at least 2 people like the change, we’ll soon after see a blog post talking about how “wildly successful” the level cap raise idea was. :-P

Most MMO players derive enjoyment from things other than “killing monsters”. The progression systems are very important to MMO players. It’s deeper than what most simple players need for enjoyjment.

You’re looking for simple “play” but there are layers in this genre that make that almost secondary, and rightly so.

The words you say are anti-level cap raising, but I get the impression that isn’t your intention.

Killing monster after monster after monster just to get a +1 to your level or a +1 to your armor and nothing more is the very definition of “simplistic”. It’s the most simple design you can possibly have, with the idea that your players enjoy such simplicity as they will jump for joy at the reward of their numbers arbitrarily getting bigger.

It was Mike O’Brien in an AMA on reddit that said the line about GW1 being stagnant.

Only for those that believe levels and gear are the only forms of progression did it seem stagnant. This is a very narrow minded view in my opinion.

Increasing levelcap is meaningless and lazy design it only widens a gap that should never have existed to begin with. Bigger numbers does not make for better gameplay.

As i have already said. Its kinda a big deal that GW1 was NOT open world. Unlike gw2 you could not move to the next part of the world unless you beet the one befor it.

If thay add all of cantha in an expac with a story not haveing levels would be a problem.

WHY would it be a problem? Why do the areas have to follow such a linear path that it requires gating to go from point A to point B? Why can’t I just run around the zone helping people, while following a linear story that sends me from one town to the next. The way the story instances you, it would be no problem at all for me to go back to a zone I’ve already completed in order to do my storyline quests. In fact, I had to do just that in the regular GW2 story because one of my quests was broken (a level 45 one) until after I hit level 80. That worked out just fine.

I don’t see any valid or sensible reason why levels are NECESSARY. Desired by some folks? Of course, everyone’s tastes are different. But masking that desire as a need when it clearly is not won’t do anyone any good.

No. Don’t want it. Don’t need it.

There’s no need whatsover to increase our power. People are used to ascended gear by now and things will even out again once Anet rolls it out in full.

To raise the bar again is just……no.

Progression does NOT mean we need to get more powerful.

This game and any mmo for that matter would be so much better if progression was achieved through the exploration of new content and the acquisition of new gear. Imagine what a breath of fresh air it would be if the devs weren’t bound by the worry of how something is going to be handled statistically and instead devoted all their time to simply making the world better, to putting more in it?

Progression through aesthetics, NOT through stupid numbers.

You asume that you actually get more powerfull from leveling which in this game is not the case do to the. Gear and skills are the only thing that actualy make you stonger.

Gear doesn’t, just skill.

3 months ago, players in full exotics had the best armor in the game, and the highest content in the game was designed around that. As Ascended gear rolls out, that armor becomes the best in the game and the new content is designed around that. In the end, your character in relation to whatever the “current” strongest monsters happen to be hasn’t changed one bit. You are still equally matched, in regards to the monster and assuming you have all the best current armor, as you were when you were in exotics.

When it comes to gear, you don’t progress forward. You either run at max speed to remain in the same place you were months ago, or slow down and get left behind.

So in that regard, I wish there was a faster method than 20 days for 1 item. I can log in and knock out a daily in 30 minutes. So 20 days at 30 minutes each day. But I do kind of wish there was an option where I could get it in 10 days for an hour each day. :-\

Will we have to wait another 2 months for the next venue (which will probably be WvW related since the first two were PvE related)? Ascended Amulets with Fractial Relics

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tolmos.8395

It should be added asap IMO. To me it makes no sense to not have the ascended gear as fractal rewards.

The daily laurel system is fine and all, but 20 days for a neck is too much and if you miss a day you cant catch up. This all smells very blizzrd/WoW to me, a big reason I quit that game. And why on earth limit item obtainment yet again this patch. There was an uprising with last patch and forcing people into fractals, now you force people into dailies, something that cant even be done at their own pace.

Add more options for gear obtainment, not less.

I do agree with this. I thought the point of this was to spread out attainment over all possible venues of play. Rather than taking the path of making everyone happy (making all ascended gear available to all play paths), Anet is taking the path of making NO ONE happy (making different pieces of gear require different play paths, so everyone can guarantee they will have to do something they don’t like).

Fractals are hands down the easiest and fastest method of attaining ascended gear, and there is no reason why that sort of ease of gain should be waved in everyone’s faces with the first two items, then taken away with an “lol enjoy your dailies!”. :-P

Making all ascended gear available in FotM is a no brainer, agreed, but since this gear is pretty much the BiS “elite” type of gear, even allowing it to be acquired through tasks that require a fraction of skill compared to fractals is a little bit offensive. Lowering the price further so every 2-day-a-week-casual(no offense meant) can easily gear up in them defeats one of the main reasons ascended gear was introduced: as a reward for dedicated players.

I loled. This is the most nonsense post I have read since the days of Vanilla WoW’s MC raiders claiming raiding required some kind special skill only they had, and thus deserved to have the best gear of any aspect of the game and no one else deserved it.

I honestly can’t tell if this post is making fun of ignorant people who think that way, is trolling, or actually thinks along the lines of “if you don’t want to play my way you don’t deserve any rewards”.

Congratulations, Arenanet. You have managed to attract the best of the WoW crowd already. A truly wonderful addition to GW2’s playerbase. :-\

I mean, if you want to do dungeons – it can be done cross-server anyways.

PvP and WvW is not covered by guesting, so that’s not the case either.

So what do you want to do? Talking in LA’s map chat? Randomly running around? There’s like no content for guesting in GW2, besides the dragons\temples hopping.

With most of the maps currently rather empty, and events require you to solo them since you can’t find folks to run with, guesting will be a huge boon for finding folks to come help out. Grab a friend from another server and now you have 2 people. Gone are the days when you are limited only to yours.

Also great for dailies.

If the expansion involves an increase in the level cap and thus the subsequent obsolescence of all previous dungeons, content and gear… then no, I’ll quietly bow out and not look back. I came to GW2 to get away from that type of power creep / forced content obsolescence. If it exists here, I won’t have any reason to stay.

Now, if the expansions are less like WoW and more like GW1, where the level cap remained stationary, all content remained viable (people still run underworld today… that was introduced pre-2006!), and simply add more story, gear skins and mechanics, I’ll be all over that expansion. Can we make wvwvw realistic? You hand out structured pvp titles like candy, though wvwvw titles are unreachable. i have done open world pvp since day of release daily, and just today hit 10k kills. takes 250k kills for title. meaning if i continued to play daily i would reach my goal in 20 yrs. Same goes for every wvwvw title. if you do the calculations, and did the work it would take 12 to 20 yrs to obtain the titles if you played 24 hours a day. This is ridiculous. theres not one person in game with a wvwvw title, fix it. Also fix Sorrows Embrace vendor prices, been bugged since release. 330 tokens for gloves, 300 for shoulders, really?

A better fix would be changing what they consider a kill. I remember doing my first monthly, killing 5 or 6 guys during a zerg and finding out that, for whatever reason, they did NOT constitute being kills and I got 0 experience for them.

What should have been an hour long endeavor turned into a 6 hour long bout of frustration :-P

Then arenanet stepped in and “fixed” the drop rate. It has never been the same since.

Don’t forget dye is a big source of gem store income. It wouldn’t help them financially to let very many dye drop at all. They do far better to limit the number that drop in the game, so the main source will said gem store.

Seen many new threads about people complaining about unobtainable goals and such?
You need these flashy items, they are only a want.
Same goes with dungeon armor, they are a want not a need.
You beat just about everything in this game with rare gear, heck even with “green” gear.

By cosmetic grind, I assume you mean grinding for gear that has the EXACT same stats as others but only looks different, since that is it’s definition. Since Rares < exotics < ascended gear, and Legendaries will later become BiS at all times, those don’t particularly fit in the category so, I am forced to ask…

Tolmos.8395

GW2 isnt a grinder.

you can unlock an play 100% of the content without grinding and be as good as anybody else in wvwvw.

grind is for cosmetics or increased difficulty (fotm) only.

people who grind do it because they want to.
people who complain about the grind… i better not say my opinion ill get infracted.

You most certainly cannot be as good as anyone in WvW. With the addition of Ascended you cannot be as good as everyone in WvW unless you do fractals. Currently, just to get the fractal back item you’re looking at 22 runs(at level 10). A fractal usually runs about an hour, sometimes more depending on the group/fractals. Then we get to rings, 10 runs for a guaranteed ring you want. Maybe you get lucky and get the ring(s) you want from the daily, but I think many are like me and are 0/18. So that’s 30+ hours EASILY of running the same fractals over and over again just to get the best in slot gear to be equal to those that use it for WvW. I don’t know what you call it, but I call that grinding.

Now lets get into the exotic grind and “being equal”. Say I want runes of divinity on my character. They are at least 8g a pop, 6*8= 48g just for the runes. Say you make 2g an hour, that’s 24 hours of grinding for runes. The gear itself is 3-4g and average of 14 pieces(1 offhand),42g-56g, 21-28 hours of grinding. Perhaps you want the karma armor instead, 42k at 386(iirc) karma per event, 109 events per piece of armor. Now we do have the daily karma jugs for 4,500, so if we farm 1 piece a day it’s 98 events we need to do. Even at 20 events an hour(1 event every 3 minutes) that’s 5 hours per piece and 30 hours for a set. Dunegons are the same as well, do 20+ runs of the same thing over and over to get your armor set.

This game has an incredible amount of grind. It’s ignorant to just say you can get exotics easy at level 80 for most casuals. The only cheap exotics have very bad stats so you’re not exactly equal to other players. Ascended have just pushed the grinding to another level and I’m sure the new laurel system will be exactly the same, complete 100 events for 1 laurel and 50 laurels for an item!

I agree. What is annoying me is how they BROKE their manifesto so badly. Why bother even having that kind of manifesto? Your attracting the wrong player base. Have a wow styled manifesto then you’ll attrack the grinding player base.

Or how about you actually do dungeons and EARN your gear.

Because video games are work, amirite?

And also because dungeon runners are entitled to more rewards than any other playstyle in the game. Right? Right???

How about skipping level 1-30?

I always got a kick out of DAoC’s system of automatically boosting a player to ~halfway to max when making an alt. It would be about equivalent to GW2 starting you off at level 30 or 40 on an alt.

This game will never do that, though, since it would just result in even more level 80 backstab thieves in WvW…

Hello all,

Here is as close to proof as you’re going to get from an individual who spends their time keeping track of and reporting the goings on in the game industry. Enjoy:

http://www.mmorpg.com/blogs/Meleagar/112012/24237_NCSoft-Sold-Arenanet-and-GW2-Out-For-Nexon-Investment

After reading that, perhaps you can begin to see why some people express disappointment in the current direction of this video game. Further, before stating your counter-argument(should you be planning to), please come up with at the least, anecdotal facts to support a counter-theory. Thanks!

And this is the nobody conspiracy theorist from the edges of the net. Post is old too. Some guy who used to play CoH or is all broken up over the game not washing his car. He posted that so long ago, saying the game was going to fail and to expect all kinds of bad stuff in the gem store. And what happened? Nothing. Just more hyperbole.

lol “So long ago”. Like 3 months is the MMO equivalent of a decade or something. =D

When the conspiracy theorist are posting that the game is dead every single day for months, but the overflows are still up, it’s easy to group for dungeons, there’s people fumbling over each over at events and wvw ques are still there, three months seem like forever. Get something new, some proof behind something, ANYTHING, you say, and I’ll listen to you. Not this same horse you people have been beating for months.

I’m not sure which server you’re on but the only overflow my server (Tarnished Coast) sees is LA, and that’s just to cram into fractals. Orr is pretty empty even on weekends and low level zones look like a single player game. >_> Everyone is funneled into Fractals right now, fractaling away for their fractal gear.

I’m sorry, I’m not following what you’re referencing, at all? Could you spell it out for me? Why 3 months is important in some way?

Oh, he was talking about how ungodly old the post was, and it was written in the end of November, 2012 =D

I wish I ran plinx more when I did but I found it extremely boring lol. Fact is that gw2 has changed since release and some people(myself included) view these changes as more of a grind than fun. They are still making changes though so hopefully this stuff will get addressed.

I actually liked it because of how mindless it was. I queued up a few movies on the other monitor and made a weekend out of it. Started on a saturday morning by Sunday had enough for a full set of Orr temple exotic armor. Wanted a second set for armor switching / aesthetic reasons lol

I dunno about exploits, but I know there were a few people back when Plinx farm was active that saved up a few MILLION karma in preparation for making their legendary.

I feel sorry for folks who need to get all the necessary karma AFTER the Plinx farm went the way of the Dodo

Right, because they didn’t introduce karma jugs or anything. Karma pretty much rains from the sky in this game.

A guy in my guild broke the 2 million karma mark a week before the Plinx farm was nerfed. 2 MILLION.

That’s ~250 jugs of liquid karma, with the ALL the buffs active. =D

are you going to say something now about how you can buy karma in the gem store?

I wish you could. Would have saved me a lot of time in game. Even as fast as the Plinx farm went, a few bucks on the gem store in exchange for not eating out for a week would have been far easier.

Oh come on guys,..

Be a bit realistic please, if you’d only had a clue how much time it costs to add new content, look at what they released the past couple of months.

They have to have some things in place to keep players busy, still they do not force you to do it.

They’re trying to make sufficient money between expansions by the gem-store alone. To do that, people have to stay and keep playing. For people to stay, they have to have things to do and goals to pursue in the game that don’t run away faster than you can pursue them, or require you to abandon all real-life pursuits to inhumanely time-consuming grind.

Either they fix this, or this game never reaches its potential, at some point the Nexon investors will push their way in because they’re not making enough money, and everything will go to hell from there.

Man, what are you babbling about? What do you think people are buying in the gem store that is the root of all this evil? Explain yourself man.

Gems -> Gold. Basically, buying gold with which to buy mats, gear, consumables, etc.

So buying gems is bad because you can buy gold to then buy mats, which others can farm for free, and sell to the people who buy gold, so they can get gold, to buy legendaries, because they farmed mats. Odd, never used gems for gold, but I have a full set of exotics, and play the game as well as anyone with a legendary or who have bought gold. I prolly play better though really, cause I’ve spent more time in game.

Explain to me how buying gems ruin the game again? Or are you just upset because someone has more imaginary gold than you?

/shrug

All the same to me. I was just pointing that out. Personally, I’m fine with that fact that someone with deep pockets can have as much gold as their wallet will afford them. Time vs money and all that. If they have more money than time, then let em drop a $1,000, buy gold via gems and buy a legendary off AH with it. They’ll get their money’s worth.

But…you didn’t point anything out, did you think it was news that gems could be turned to gold or something? Come on, you’re part of the conspiracy crowd. Hit me with your best shot.

lol “conspiracy crowd”. I like it. Sure, I’ll hop into the group with the everyone else. But in this regard I’m not in agreement. If someone has a financial advantage IRL, I see no reason why they should be any less available to use that in game than someone who has a time advantage IRL and uses it in game. I feel no different about that in this game than I do about it in EVE online with the PLEX system or Age of Wushu with its… well, pretty obvious P2W system lol.

You asked what the perceived evil about the gem store was. That’s the perceived evil. Thought of mainly by people who don’t feel a financial advantage should equal an in game advantage.

Will we ever be able to change display name?

First off: Sorry for the grammatically incorrect title; I had to fit the thing into 45 characters.

I’d like to be able to change my account display name. I had no idea when I first signed up that this would follow me into the game, or that it would be my forum name. Is this feature coming anytime? I thought I saw a dev post about including it way back at launch, but that could be wishful remembering.

Can anyone give me some info on this?

Thanks!

I don’t remember hearing anything about plans to allow us to change that so far. I’m sure if it got suggested enough and they thought the effort would be worthwhile you might see this feature come about, but I haven’t heard of it being a proposed change.

Your claims to not make your hate personal are lies. Your post has already made your hatred for her personal.

Wow, do you even think before you write? Everything I’ve said about her has to do with her professional “accomplishments” and nothing more. How about you wipe the tears from your eyes, put the white knight armor in a corner and take a breather for a while?

What a hateful post you’ve written. Oh my, dyes are no longer account wide, the whole game is ruined. Wah! Now you’ve decided to blame here for stuff beyond the gem store. I recommend that you work on a large software project sometime, and then you’ll learn why there’s no way she couldn’t have the power you claim she has.

I love when people write such vague posts in the hopes of trying to look more knowledgeable about something than they are, while simultaneously trying to make the person they are replying to look less knowledgeable than they may be.

“Planes don’t fly backwards”
“I recommend you fly a plane sometime and you’ll see why that’s wrong.”

Even though the answer is obvious, everyone stops and goes “Oh man, this guy must be a pilot and have all this amazing knowledge that I don’t! He must be right!” without him actually ever saying any of that.

Nice spin, there.

Hey why not hate everyone that disagrees with you. Hmmm. I don’t see what planes have to do with anything. But the Easter Bunny says cars go Vroom. Don’t let your hate keep you up at night, and watch your blood pressure because strokes are nasty business.

lol Now I just wanna pat you on the head for being cute.
