Ahh, yes, I will miss the berating of players for their builds, calling anyone who tried anything new a bad player, the insults and profanity barked at players in map chat, and lets not forget the things he said in some of the post that were removed by the moderators, man those were doosies.

None the less, I still hope he comes back. It was entertaining if nothing else.

Agreed. (S)he was usually pretty rude, sugarcoating their posts in fluffy condescension of happiness, and did a pretty good job funneling new Engineers into cookie cutter builds… but it was amusing watching people disagree on who was the #1 Engineer.

well I guess people can now talk about turret enginers witheout getting hate :P

And suddenly the Engineer forum feels a little brighter. It’ll be nice to see these forums get a little more friendly and see people become adventurous with build variety again!

Hurrah!

Maybe its time for an Anet survey ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tolmos.8395

I appreciate the feedback. I just wonder how such a survey could work. Most surveys are not essay questions. They’re like this:

  • Should we change [this thing]? Yes/No.

That seems unhelpful. First, things are seldom answered with just a yes or no answer. Instinct is to react, “Well, I need to know more about why you’re looking at that area,” or “That’s not as important as [these other things]” or “Yes, please change it [this way] and not [that other way].”

I don’t see why it can’t be supplementary to what you already do.

Right now, you say that the Anet team reads the forums- but that’s not a great indication of what the playerbase wants. You could, at best, count the number of for/against players on a topic and use the forum as a sample size, but that doesn’t seem very accurate to me.

Something like the “NPE” or “Ascended Armor” would be perfect examples of where a survey would come in. You guys read forums, come up with a solution, and then present it.

1) Would you want to see a new, dungeon attainable, armor set to continue character progression beyond Exotic armor? (Y/N)

2) Would you want all story chapters to be condensed into segments, attainable every 10 levels, as opposed to new story content every level/every few levels? (Y/N).

If every 2 weeks or so you present a survey in game, per account, for each user to take and answer these questions, you could continue formulating ideas as you do know, but add that 1 extra step to get a TRUE majority consensus from the current playerbase, as opposed to what the forums claim (“I disagree with you and everyone else on the forums, therefor the ‘silent majority’ that actually agrees with me just isn’t speaking right. Because obviously I’m right and speak for everyone!”).

That’s my $0.02

who is Vee Wee?

Well whatever Vee Wee is or does – he just PWND you my friend…

I have to say… from what I’ve seen Vee Wee is always polite, always helpful, always cheery and ever active…

This post has 1700 views at the time I’m posting – says a lot!

Reckon this post is a good opportunity for anyone who’s ever been helped out by a Vee Wee post or enjoyed his general cheeryness to say thanks…

So yeh, Thanks Vee Wee – keep the tips coming!

People like Vee Wee actually turned me away from the Engineer class all together, unfortunately. :-\

My favorite build in this class is Turret, straight up. Played it from day 1 of headstart until about 6 months ago (when I had to take a break from the game). When I returned, I stopped by engie forums to see what had changed, and saw nothing but hate for turret players.

Now, I can handle “Turrets are bad, and only bad players use them.” That’s pretty much how it’s always been, and I actually like that; it gives me far more satisfaction beating players in 1v1, or even 1v2, knowing that the build I’m running is kitten .

The problem is that Vee Wee, and players like him, perpetuate on top of that idea that even though turrets are bad, anyone who runs them and wins is just using them as crutch, and is just a bad player trying to make up for being bad by using AI.

In a nutshell? If you play turrets and lose, it’s because you ran a bad build. If you play turrets and win, it’s because you’re a bad player who needed turrets to win. No matter what- you suck. While I do play the game for my own enjoyment, there’s a lot to be said about not being looked down on when I PvP regardless of whether I win or not.

All together… the type of Engineer Vee Wee pushes onto other people is not the Engineer class I love. The actual class is versatile (moreso than any other in the game), and all around fun. But Vee Wee’s engineer? It’s rigid, more than even a necro or guardian. And the rallying of other players following his view of the class just makes the entire class simply unappealing to me. :-\

I would say they probably laugh at Engineer tears over being slapped in the face with this horrendous backpiece, but that would require they actually read this thread. Considering the last red response was months upon months ago… yea.

I’ve always kind of wondered if the goal was to phase out Engineers. Maybe they realized the class didn’t fit someone’s design vision, and if they ignore them long enough (randomly toss in a nerf or two along the way) that everyone will just class hop and go play something else.

I’m sorry to all the Engineers who are still around. It’s tough being unloved.

Anyone who cries that you use all of your build to 100% to beat them needs to reassess whether they should be doing 1v1 or not.

They are basically just crying that they lost and trying to find a way to shift the blame from them not winning, to you somehow cheating… because you didn’t hold back… suggesting that you should have held back against them because they are weak.

So actually, they are saying they are weak and you’re bullying them.

The problem with the OP is the definition of skill is very narrow. A warrior often thinks there is no skill getting crushed from range. Range think there is no skill face rolling in close combat. Etc. Etc.

AI is not mindless at all. A turret engineer, a MM and a ranger require you really know what you are doing to do it well. They are also easy to counter.

Skill is such a relative term. I play an engineer with 3-4 kits. I wonder if I have to be more “skilled” than a player who only has 2 weapons and a couple utilities. (Play other classes so the answer is no). It is just a different type of skill mate.

If I could like this 1,000 times I would. 10,000 even.

Every time I died to a backstabbing thief, I would say that required no skill. They pop out of nowhere, boom boom and I’m dead. So then I gave one a try and failed miserably. After an hour of not getting my intended results, I had to start to admit that there might be more to this than I thought.

I watch other Engineers flounder with their turret builds; I have no problem killing people with them and never have, but I also have over 1,000 gameplay hours devoted entirely to my turret engineer only, using nothing else. Knowing when to drop them, how to drop them, and when to pop their overloads are a HUGE part of the equation.

When I see people sit there and say “it requires no skill” now, after I spent literally hundreds of hours perfecting my gameplay using the build that before was called completely worthless, is a little perturbing.

I know I shouldn’t care, but it’s somewhat annoying to be stuck in a weird place where you suck if you win, and you suck if you lose… all because 1 or 2 people on forums don’t know how to counter a build once it gets buffed.

Honestly- I can’t wait until they nerf turrets again. I got used to them when they were garbage, and I liked using an unnoticed build and winning with something that wasn’t supposed to be usable.

Maybe turret engi takes so little skill that even backstab thief seemed hard to you in comparison…

At comparable skill levels below upper tiers, though – and in an awful lot of soloq, since it’s much more effective to hold points there due to lower expected levels of communication – the amount of effort and skill needed to win with an AI build is much lower than that needed for others.

This sounds like a cop-out to me. It sounds like someone running a pet build beat you, and now you’re trying to claim they really have no skill because they have pets and you don’t.

5 builds right here, right!? 5 Unique and different builds that offer distinctively different game play. Right? Is this build diversity? Is this what it means in this game?

My Mace now deals 5% more damage and gives me 250 more healing! Now I’ll play entirely differently.

Some classes are a little worse about it than others, but Engineer is great for build diversity. Of my friends that play this game, 3 of us are engineers. All 3 play completely different builds. I play a dual pistol turreteer, another plays a flamethrower gadget engie and the third plays a rifle + grenades/bombs elixir engie.

Sitting behind the keyboard on each of our engineers is vastly different. Beyond that you could go pure elixir, pure gadgets, there are a couple of other hobosacks… er I mean, kits you could run, etc.

Some classes are pretty homogeneous, but Engineers at least give a few options.

He is somewhat amusing, though his posts are usually combative, especially towards any builds that aren’t his own. But now? People act like I’m riding the flavor of the month train. It drives me nuts. My character’s build has been practically static since release, but now that it’s suddenly good I’m just another fotm turreteer.

I feel the exact same way as the OP. I have played a turret Engie since the very first day of headstart. It has been my main, through thick and thing, through sheer stubbornness alone. No matter how crappy turrets got… no matter how much we were hated, there I was- a lonely little turreteer.

Now there are turrets EVERYWHERE, and everyone looks like me like I chose the build because it’s FotM. I feel so very hipster because of this (I ran turrets before they were cool!), but dangit, I don’t like seeing so many of me around.

The hipster in me hopes they nerf the crap out of turrets soon.

Gw2 most grindy game ever..?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

I would prefer different grinds to affect different things. Instanced grinds for multiple new tiers of gear beyond exotic, whose stats ONLY affect those instances. Once you step foot outside you go back to exotic gear. Anet could then go crazy with tiers, and it would reduce the affect on external players thus reduce the whine (not eliminate, but reduce).

Basically, split grinds into 3 categories:

1) PvP grind – grinding for pvp loots, skins, level books, etc (lots of grinding because it really isn’t grinding as much as just doing what you’d normally do anyway)
2) Dungeon grind – grinding for tiers of armor that affect dungeons and ONLY dungeons. Outside of dungeons, this armor is reduced to exotic level(lots of grinding, because that’s really what dungeons are about anyway. No grind, no point in doing dungeons more than once or twice)
3) Open world grind – grinding for whatever in the open world. New skins, map completion, living story stuff, etc. (Minimal grind here. This is the area for the no grind people)

After the inclusion of Ascended gear to the game, I’m pretty much against the idea of dueling in anything except sPvP land. in sPvP, I know at least that we are on the same playing field when it comes to stats, and that a stat advantage had nothing to do with it. With ascended gear in PvE, I wouldn’t accept a single duel since I’d never known whether I’m about to fight a guy decked out in full purples just another exotic bum like myself.

Healing support need's improvement

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tolmos.8395

I love this game so much, but it really is DPS or gtfo. That’s part of the reason that berserker is so popular of a stat distribution; it’s like instead of going for healer/tank/dps trinity, they just tossed out tank and healer and made everyone homogenous. At the end of the day, our dungeons end up looking like WoW’s 5 man runs, except with only the 3 dps =D Which is amusing in its own right, I suppose…

As you can probably tell, I’m not a fan of GW2’s dungeon/group setup because of the lack of roles beyond
-DPS
-less DPS and some tiny amount of support, but still mostly just DPS.
Buuuut that’s ok. That’s why I play multiple MMOs. GW2 dungeoning isn’t for me, so I don’t play it for the dungeoning. I PvP and do open world stuff, and I get my dungeon antics in other games. With the new PvP change allowing me to get dungeon skins from sPVP, that makes it even easier to keep this setup.

Though I will say that despite my extremely vocal opposition to trinity in the past, at this point I’d take that in a heartbeat over what we have now. :-\ But that’s just me.

I’m looking to run a build for PvE solo and dungeon PvE that is pretty durable but can still dish out enough damage to not be worthless.

The only weapon I don’t have available to me is focus; otherwise, I can use pretty much any weapon that would suit the build. I’d prefer hammer be in there somewhere, but it’s fine if not.

My current armor, from my previous build, is: All Sentinel accessories, All beserker armor. I can replace any of these as necessary for a build, though if the sentinel can be made any of use of, that would rock (the price is hefty >_>).

So do you guys know of any still viable altruistic healing builds for solo/dungeon PvE, or if not, do you know something comparable that you might suggest? Thanks!

Here’s a crazy thought OP… you could, you know… complete the events and push them back the other way? I know, I know, it sounds way WAY out there, but that option does actually exist.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to post a series of videos showing how a solo player, at appropriate zone level, can solo group Dynamic content, particularly those involving champions, to illustrate how simple what you are suggesting is, while remembering this often happens in new player and sub 50 zones.

Some events require multiple people, not all do. There are some champions you can solo, others you can’t. Do what you can, ask in map chat for help with what you can’t. You’d be surprised how many people seem to show up out of nowhere when they see someone involved in an event.

Pretty much this. Take Orr for example: I’m doing map completion there and it’s basically empty on Tarnished Coast. I see 2-3 players TOPS each night as I roam, so I’m on my own for pretty much everything.

On my turret Engineer, I can take most events that involve large numbers of regular NPCs and a few Veterans. There are maybe 2-3 champions I can take alone. Any other event that involves several veterans and champs, I pretty much have to start begging favors from others to get them to come help me out.

Just do what you can get and ask for help on the ones you can’t, or skip them for the time being.

Anet, why dont you split PvE and WvW?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

I’m hoping they get around to doing that eventually. It would allow them to do 2 things:

A) Properly balance WvW PvP without breaking PvE by separating skill linkings between the two. A nerf to warriors in WvW would affect them in PvE.

B) Allow them to cap armor stats at exotic in WvW while allowing a near infinite armor progression in PvE. I do understand that there are some folks who practically need the 10% extra stat handicap that Ascended gear gives them in WvW in order to be competitive, but at the same time if anything gets added beyond Ascended gear it will start to do really bad things to that part of the game.

I’m all for them separating WvW PvP and the rest of PvE even farther. That would be amazing.

It also seems to involve where your camera is facing, so I almost always point my camera right at who I want to target. Of course, I could be mistaken there and just pointlessly moving my camera… but meh, makes me feel better lol

You can also just simply click on your target as well.

If GW2 switched to a sub model, I really think they would lose out on money. They have loaded up their store so much with RNG that it has basically become virtual gambling, and there is a LOT of money to be made with that. Folks with gambling problems would dump as much cash into the game as they have available to try to RNG their way to nice stuff. I wouldn’t be surprised to find some folks paying $200+ per month in gems.

I’m not sure a $10 per month subscription would be able to make up for that loss…

9 runs in a row now (after last night) @lv 49, not even a ring. 8/9 receiving dredge as 3rd fractal, 5/9 having both cliffside and dredge. Not that cliffside is hard, it just makes the night that much longer.

I don’t think Anet has quite mastered the art of RNG. I mean, they have the basics down, but their percentages on drop rates are WAY off. They are still learning, though… give them time!

As their pride starts to take a sideline and they become more willing to admit that they probably goofed on a few things, we’ll start to see some major leaps and strides in the enjoyability of playing the game. They are just being REALLY slow about it lol.

Heh, looking at the recent year’s worth of patches, one can only assume that Anet thinks we all run only Grenades, hate having any other backpack besides our kit hobosacks, and are too OP to be left in our current state without a few nerfs. :-P

Mount up a hobosack and forget about your turrets for now. I’m sure in another year or two they’ll see some fixes and buffs, but for now you’d do better running ’nades.

I’d prefer the female one. Whenever my character runs, all I hear in my head is the old 1980s Conan the Barbarian theme =D

Huge patch coming out around April, around the launch of ESO. Maybe that will have some GvG love in it? =D

I can’t believe how shallow you all are.

Out of all the problems for the Engineer, which impact that game on a technical standpoint heavily, all of you are more concerned over a backpack than something with meat on it’s bones?

Why is this thread over 500 responses with 40k views but every other thread barely squeaks over 50 of the same problems combined?

If you really think your game has been ruined because you can’t see your “fluffy candy butt” and not because of core game mechanics, I got a line for you.

“You can’t see the forest or the trees”. I’d say “forest for the trees” but that would be giving you all to much credit on critical thinking skills.

“Omg, someone else in the game wants something that I don’t want and expressed an opinion I don’t agree with! Let’s make personal jabs at them, in order to express my selfishness in a meaningful and intelligent way! They won’t be able to argue with me calling them a ‘poopie head’! heeheehee”

One more month and this thread will turn one year old.

Happy birthday thread! May you live long!

I would rather have it die in a month with the issue it is related to being fixed.

We’ll probably be celebrating its 2 and 3 year anniversaries together. The only thing likely to cause that not to happen is if the thread gets closed or deleted. :-\

Why Still No First Person View?

I had always heard Arenanet didn’t know how to properly implemented a first person mode, even one that is just a basic camera on your person with no arms or legs visible. It was a running joke of “They can’t even make a first person mode; what makes you think they could properly implement blah?”

If they say nothing, eventually the thread dies and everyone just accepts it and moves on. That’s happened many times since the game released.

It really is a situation of “ignore it and it’ll go away”. And guess what? It does lol

Could someone post the description of the molten pick that stated that it was the best, would always be the best, and no infinite pick would ever come after it that had better features? I can’t find that anywhere. :-\

Yes, it’s a problem. It’s not crippling, it’s not class-ruining, it’s not even all that serious.
It’s still annoying and should be changed.

Crippling? No. Class ruining, in a game where aesthetics is one of the largest factors behind endgame rewards and real money transactions? Why yes, yes it is very class ruining, actually.

You basically have a choice- destroy the aesthetics of your character by running around with a hobosack that clashes with 90% of the armor you can wear, including some of the most difficult to get and certainly the most costly, as well as rendering useless any backpiece rewards you are given or purchase… OR, kitten your character by never using kits ever.

I’ve shelved my Engineer until the patch that hides these things finally goes through. If forced to choose between aesthetics or gameplay, I’ll choose option C) play something else until I can have my cake and eat it, too.
