Since I started MMOing in 1997, I have found very VERY few PvE encounters that I considered to require any level of “skill”. I was a hardcore raider in college (the free time allowed it), raiding for 4 of my 5 years in WoW and almost all of my 1.5 in Rift (didn’t really raid in the rest of the games I played, since I mostly played them for PvP). 90% of that raiding was as the main tank or one of the main healers in the raid. In all of that time, I can count the number of fights that I felt required true “skill” one 1 hand.
Liadri is in that category.
Because of the Liadri fight, I had to realize the flaws in my playstyle and my reaction speed, as well as create a new build specifically for the fight. Even with all of that, it was still probably one of the most difficult (by way of player skill) encounters I’ve seen in an MMO to date, if not THE most difficult.
It wasn’t about arbitrarily bigger numbers on my armor, or whether the tank knew the rotation of the AOEs or anything like that. It is about timed dodges while keeping up with your environment. It was about MY ability to play, not my ability to rely on someone else to keep me afloat. Any single mistake meant the end of the match And I loved every second of it.
So thank you. The mini I received from that encounter is probably the first virtual item, far above and beyond any “tier #” gear I RNGed into in a raid, that I actually feel accomplished having and showing off.
Definitely hope to see more like this fight in the future.
It’s BECAUSE Liadri requires so much skill that the reward is crap, and I’m ok with that. It took me a while to beat her, but I have a mini to show for it. That makes me happy. But I understand that many MMO players simply don’t want skill based content- they want # based content, time based content, etc. That being the case, there would be a LOT of mad people out there because they can’t Liadri’s reward, if that reward was something awesome.
This is a way to give those of us who want skill based stuff something to do, without harming (too badly) those who don’t want it at all.
Ya, I love the permanent axe. I really want permanent harvesting equipment. It is really a pain to “run out” of charges in the middle of nowhere or have to use up inventory space to make sure you don’t run out.
The problem with these is that if you have more than one character, you’re screwed. Because they’re soul bound.

I missed them the first time around due to financial difficulty (was job hunting), but now am ready to buy buy buy (job hunting successful!).

Engy can use a single Adept Major trait to get perma swiftness. They don’t have much of anything else that helps them move faster, but 100% uptime is 100% uptime, which is a hell of a lot better than what Mesmer gets.
100% uptime if you run kits, which pretty much negates all elixir builds, turret builds and gadget builds. Because thats the requirement on that trait- that you are wearing a kit for the movement speed increase.

The biweekly free updates would be awesome if they actually added stuff that stayed in the game. All these content patches and we don’t exactly have a lot to show for it at this exact moment…
This whole removing content idea isn’t exactly on my list of favorite creative things an MMO has done.
For me- Liadri, since she is physically impossible for me to beat. I’m mildly colorblind and the honeycomb shaped floor does an absolutely perfect job of masking the AOE circles on the ground. The result is that I literally cannot see even if a hint of them, and thus have to play out the entire fight not know where any of the AOEs are about to take place. The additional annoyance of a poorly designed combat arena where the tight dome causes the camera to do the mambo every time you stand near the edge doesn’t help =D
The clocktower, on the other hand, I thoroughly enjoyed. The design was amazing and, colorblind or not, there was no reason it couldn’t be beat. I enjoyed it.
The whole “limited time” thing in general is starting to get a wear a bit thin. It was a cool idea at first, but the longer it goes on, the more wasteful it feels. I start to find myself not bothering to do some of the living story because I have a choice between it or something else I want to do, and if I don’t choose it then I’ll miss out on it permanently.
I can appreciate them producing content every 2 weeks- that’s amazing. But whatever genius decided to REMOVE that content after 2 weeks isn’t exactly the brightest individual around.
So the moral of the OP’s story was “If you aren’t running full zerker, you’re a noob”.

So mesmers have 2 options and engineers have 2 options.
Mesmers get blink + focus. Engineers get a trait that only works with kits and they get Elixir B.

Are you kidding me ? What you have been using is a bannable offense,you by using a Fov hack gain advantage over other players who are not being able to zoom out and see as far as you can,by using that hack you can also use ac’s to shoot at places no other person can without that tool.

I was bullied pretty severely in high school. Well, that’s not entirely true… They tried to bully me severely in high school. I didn’t care for a second, and most degrading comments were countered by an even more degrading one.
Don’t get me wrong, bullying in schools and at work is a big problem, and should be dealt with, because I know not everyone can handle it the way I did (my brother for example struggled for years). But I don’t care for bullying over the internet (and especially on MMORPGS), because there is nothing that is avoided more easily than that, and the opinion of an unknown individual who acts like a 12 year old is not something you should care about, nor let it get to you.
It would be a better world if more people stopped caring about pointless stuff.
Being bullied is high school is lousy. But it’s being bullied/abused at a much younger age, during your formative years, that often leads to serious problems like the ones I’m talking about. You’re you. You’re the only you. And it’s nice that you can just turn off that part of you that separates online from the real world. I can too.

I actually disagree with the being bullied earlier messing you up more. In elementary school, I was bullied pretty hardcore. Not just verbally, but physically. By the time I hit late middle school, I started to identify what was causing the bullying and dealt with it. I changed schools in 9th grade and had a fresh start. A combination of dealing with the personal problems that caused the bullying, combined with becoming more physically active, changed my highschool experience entirely (in comparison).
The thing was, there were other students who went to my highschool who were not so lucky. They got picked on then and it was devastating. Everyone that I knew who had been picked on in some way during elementary or middle school, but not in highschool, came out without too terribly many anger issues and generally went on to have fulfilling relationships. But those who got bullied in highschool had it FAR worse. Many had anger issues, and most had great difficulty settling into relationships and were generally awkward in social settings.
To this day, I swear that being bullied in highschool is far FAR worse than elementary/middle school. The damage that I’ve personally seen done to individuals who were generally good people, just socially awkward, was horrendous. And yet some of the most successful (socially and professionally) people I’ve met went through some form of early years bullying.
Not really pertinent to the original topic, but I just thought I’d share my opinion.
I’m not making this stuff up. I was involved in a project for people who suffered early abuse (particularly sexual abuse) and the currently thinking is the younger you’re abused, and the more people who are involved, the worse it hits you later in life. There are quite a few papers that suggest this is true (though it can’t be proven of course).
Everyone is different and reacts differently. No one person’s experiences will be the same as anyone else’s, which is WHY I talk tolerance. You never know what someone else has been through.
Woah, now. There is a HUGE, HUUUUUUUGE difference between simple bullying and sexual assault. It’s like comparing getting kicked in the shin to getting shot in the face. I’m talking BULLYING here, not kitten .

Not sure this occurred to you, but very often the people most offended by such language are older, not younger. Different people grew up with different cultural standards.
If you think it’s okay to curse because it doesn’t offend you, well there’s not much I can say to that. But I think you’ll find that most of the people here arguing against freely used profanity are adults.
Over the years I’ve come to realize that age does not immediately exclude one from being immature.
I cannot be held accountable for someone else being overly sensitive. I’m sorry, but there are people who can so easily be offended that you could never appease them. This game openly states in its T rating that profane language is to be expected. Someone who comes into this game, sees profane language, and becomes “outraged” gets no sympathy from me.
This doesn’t include direct attacks, however. The T rating says nothing about harassment. But if the only issue is the language, then the problem is neither with the game nor the person who said the “bad words”. It’s as simple as that.

That means it’s for kids from 13+… I wouldn’t want my 13 year old exposed to some of the language here. People take swear words seriously because they are offensive, rude and often don’t want the youngest of our community to be exposed to that. To overlook this and assume that everyone is just being too sensitive is a little childish, try to think of everyone in the community not just a few you may know.
I’d also like to say I agree with a lot of what was said here as well, and that people really should try to relax a little while playing the game… You don’t need to flip out because you lose a tpvp match, your team most likely did the best they could.. your party probably did the best they could in that dungeon etc etc… Getting hostile about a loss or a failure does not help you grow as a person and certainly doesn’t help whoever you were playing with (they probably feel as bad as you do for the loss or failure). Instead try to be positive and inspire those around you to do the same to help build a better community.
Better not let that 13 year old watch cable television.
And definitely don’t let them go to school- far worse language used by students in the classrooms.
In fact, keep them indoors entirely. That’s the best way to keep them safe from the “bad words”

I would assume that he has, but what exactly could we expect doctors to do? They are hardly magical. Unless there is some issue that can be surgically fixed, the best they could offer him is medication to deal with it. Still wouldn’t help GW2, though. :-\ Would be a bit overboard to load up on Dramamine every time you want to play =D
I don’t know maybe he has a tumor in his balance area connected to the ears/eyes. Maybe the doctors could do surgery in his head to remove that, just my thoughts.

What if the environment is part of the challenge?!?!?
It depends on what they part of the environment they intend to make challenging. Some ideas in that regard can be clever and fulfilling. Others can be downright idiotic.
For example: Battles that have open edges along the sides, or platforms that you have to jump to, etc are clever and fulfilling. If you make the wrong move, you can fall off the edge and plummet to your death, so you have to play smart in order to win.
However, then compare it to this event. In this event, the “challenge” of the environment is that the floor is designed in such a fashion that certain individuals with a natural handicap are entirely unable to see the AOE indicator (not everyone, just certain individuals), and so that your camera bounces off the side of the environment if you get too close to the edge, and generally goes crazy because of the shape of the arena.
That is in no way, shape or form clever or fulfilling. It would take a raging fanboi of epic proportions to try to spin that as anything other than a mistake that one would hope would get hotfixed before the end the event, so that everyone could have an equal chance at winning, not just those lucky enough to not be colorblind.
We have been begging for this since release and have only just now gotten a “Hey, we’re considering doing something about this at some point maybe in the future when it’s possible. Maybe.”
I just hope they dont make the minis soulbound. I want to be able to sell them years down the road for massive gold to new players who want my 4 and 5 year minis.
There isn’t an achievement for an 80 of every class? Odd. Of all of the things in this game that I’ve heard of people do, that is one of the few I honestly look at as being an “Achievement”, far beyond making a “legendary” weapon or completing some instance.
In fact, the only other thing someone could tell me that they have done in this game that would actually impress me would be beating Liadri. :-P
If they had experience scrolls that jumped you 20 levels, I would be all over that. After three level 80s, I’m tired of leveling… but I’m not tired of alts =D

(furthermore zerging is not even so challenging)that would literally kill a part of what made Gw2 stand out from the rest of the MMORPGS. if that happened then it wouldn’t be people yelling at you for ruining their farming spot, it be people yelling at you for just being there.

Yea, I’m not a fan of creating an “us vs them” mentality with the loot. It’s part of what I love about GW2, and don’t want to see it shift in the opposite direction :-\

This is probably one of my favorite patches that has come out so far, and with all the negativity out there I wanted to say “thanks”.
The champion loot buff has made doing open world content rewarding enough that I no longer feel pressured to just speed run instances over and over to get money. I despise instances of all kinds, so Im really happy getting an open world alternative. Try not to nerf it too hard when the inevitable time comes…
The queen’s gauntlet has given me, someone who has logged well over 1,100+ hours since headstart, a reason to play regularly again. Yes, the design of the arena floor and the dome, combined with Liadri, has made me want to punch my monitor on more than one occasion… but up until this point it has been a blast =D.
The account wallet has made my life as an alt-o-holic a 100000000000x easier when it comes to gold. I finally, FINALLY, have all my gold in 1 spot without having to run back to the bank every time I want something.

I went to cursed shore today to try out some of the scaling events. One of the events spawns a lot of elemental champs. Soon I was being blasted in map chat and folks were saying to block me, some suggesting that I should be banned for botting.
I left without completing the event – but was rather disappointed in the experience and concerned my account would be flagged.
Is it ok to complete the events in cursed shore? With the amount of folks in the event farming, I am rather concerned about the economy going belly up. The immersion in the game also seems to break, adding to the unfun factor. Other events in the zone are ignored too with everyone focusing on the farm. I sincerely hope ANet nerfs farming of events such as this, such as encouraging people to complete the event.
So my question is, am I ok completing these events without ANet punishment?
This is why I turn off map chat entirely. There are better things to do than listen little children threaten to tattle on me for a PERCEIVED wrongdoing, simply because I’m getting nicer stuff than them. No matter what their idle threats, I suspect nothing will actually happen because I’m playing the game. And on the off chance Anet does turn out to be so daft that they actually ban me for playing normally, then I would know to find a new game.
tl;dr- ignore map chat. You lose brain cells reading it, anyhow.
They chose to cater to the wrong MMO crowd, in my opinion. The “MOAR!!!” MMOers are the wrong kind of players to build a community – or a game – around.
Normally I would disagree, but this time I don’t. Before this, the best rewards came from instances. That pidgeonholed everyone into a single style of play. The goal of this was to open up the opportunity for everyone to play what they enjoy and get rewarded equivalently. No, it’s not perfect yet and no, it’s not balanced yet. But the idea is on the right track.
This isn’t about MOAR, it’s about giving everyone, not just dungeon runners, something to play for.

The most annoying carebear feature in the game is rallying in pvp. All it does is reward bad players.
And yet, it’s available to everyone, including both participants in that particular PvP match. So whenever I read a line like this, what I read is “Anet introduced something more than just facerolling WoW style in PvP and I lost because the other player used to better than I did, so please remove it from the game”.

Back at headstart and for like a month after, 60g was a less attainable goal than 700g is now.
If Arenanet ever takes anything from this event, I hope it is that they should never use tightly domed environments or honeycomb floors again.
My biggest problem with the Liadri fight is not how difficult Liadri herself is, but how difficult the environment makes the fight!
With the honeycomb style flooring, someone like me who is mildly colorblind simply cannot see the ground AOE. Like, at all. With or without post-processing on. Nowhere else in the game have I ever had a problem like that. >_>
Secondly, the dome… yea, that thing. Who in the world thought a dome where the camera couldn’t penetrate and thus gets crammed into unsightly angles would be a good idea for this particular arena? >_>
The thing is- the Liadri fight, to me, doesn’t seem that bad. I actually feel confident I could beat it, minus the angles problem. Even though I can’t see the ground AOE, I CAN see the black stuff hovering in the air before the attack. Using that, I can time the dodge and know where/when to dodge. The angles caused by the dome, however, block my view of them when the white spiral is in a corner, and it makes it possible for the AOE to sneak up on me. Basically creates a perfect storm where I’m simply rendered helpless against the AOE. 0_o
So yea… maybe no round domes or crazy honeycomb floors next next? =D
Ok, so I’m on an RP server and every once in a while a lore based discussion will come into play in a major city. Usually fun to watch players bicker about generally nonsensical stuff, but this time around they said something that honestly has me curious.
A player made the statement that EVERY class dabbles in magic. Without fail, every player in the game is somehow magic based. Of course, as an engineer, I heartily disagreed. I do science, not magic! Their response was that an Arenanet employee, in an interview, had stated that Alchemy was actually magic… and therefor engineers do magic, not science.
I don’t buy it.
So I figured “Hey, I bet the lore writers poke their heads into the forums now and again. Lets see what they say! Put an end to the confusion once and for all!”
So I ask of you, Lore Writing peoples of Arenanet: is alchemy magic, or science?

For me, there is nothing more annoying than running across a mod post when I’m not expecting one. Example: I am browsing through forums and find a hot, controversial, topic on the front page. I may have even been following this topic for some time, so I have quite an interest in what is being said. So, of course, when I see that there is an Arenanet official response on the topic, what is the first thing that pops into my head? “WOOO OFFICIAL CLARIFICATION ON THE TOPIC!”. What am I greeted with instead, when I find the “official response”?

What the holy crap? It’s like you went out of your way to spread your hotkeys all over the place so it would look like you are playing the piano while playing GW2 =D Most people try to cram all their hotkeys into 1 section of the keyboard so they don’t have to move their hand around… you specifically set yours up all over the place so you DO. =D
This setup made me chuckle.
I just finished reading Rob Thody’s news article about <a href=“https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-wallet/”>the wallet</a> and had to cringe when I saw the word “amongst” used in the text. No offense to Rob here, I’m nitpicking on the word itself.
I’m definitely not a grammarista, but didn’t “amongst” go out of style, I don’t know… many years ago? I thought the word was only a pompous version of “among”. Truly, is there any difference between among and amongst (other than the latter is not used in every day conversation)?
I hate the word “amongst” so much that I refuse to wear the “God walking…” title.
I was wondering if anyone else felt the same way.
The Oxford Dictionary would like to take this moment to point out that there is no difference in usage between Among and Amongst.
It’s the hobosacks, probably. They are a particular level of unappealing, and it generally runs off most new engies. They get there thinking “Oh this will be great!”, then realize that their character is not only wearing a hideous hobosack, but looks completely idiotic in the process. At that point they usually roll a ranger or thief :-P

I’ve got one better. I was in DR and was clicking on one of those fun box thingies. All of a sudden a portal appeared on top of the box, which I immediately gained activating priority on over it. Result? I hit F, and was ported to a location WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY above the ground, between the first and second floors of DR, and fell to my untimely demise =D As did about 8 or 9 other people. We all splatted about the same time.

I play males, however I feel its kind of weird that females hold things differently then males do, females seem to be more aggressive and I like the way they attack more.
I see different querky things like kites which allow me to wield like a female would, and females can wield things like a male can, which leaves me to believe that it doesn’t matter, they are just different.
Why isn’t there an option to allow my male to carry and swing like the way I want to? Honestly its a little sexist.
I actually agree with this in many ways. The staff is the first to come to my mind. The female staff wielders hold the staff in a manner that screams sage wisdom, while the males hold it like they are preparing to sprint off in a race. It looks beyond ridiculous when idling in a city and holding the staff.
