Why is CoF still in the game?

What’s the point of nerfing CoF at this point? The damage it has done to the economy is done, and nerfing will do nothing but stop the rest of the players who are currently leveling up the warriors and mesmers needed to compete, economically, from catching up. There’s no point in that.

The disparity in wealth that has been created by CoF is there. Anet knew this would happen and welcomed it with open arms- otherwise they would have dealt with it LONG before now. All you can do at this point is exactly what they intend for you to do- level up a mesmer or warrior to 80 and run CoF with the rest of us.

Nerfing it now would only hurt you. The rest of us are already loaded from it

Flamethrower kit: you would think that flamethrower is a flame spewing weapon that burns everyting to ashes, right? but thats strange, ther sure is lots of flames but…nothing is burning, how so? A big suprise for every new engineer in traning that pick up this kit to burn some a***s whit condition, as its a power based weapon! its logical right?
Using flamethrower you first break their bones and then burn them…for 1 second.

Soldier: Captain! they are in the bunkier we wont be able to do anything to them!
Captain: dont worry! we have flamethrower!
Soldier: Great! we can use it to burn them inside…
Captain: What are you talking about! we will use it to break throu the wall and get inside
Soldier: …umm…its a FLAMEthrower right?
Captain: it sure is, and it hit realy hard, after you break a part the target you will then burn it for 1 second, see ther is your FLAME part
Soldier: OHH!! that makes sense!

While I understand where you are coming from…

I desperately hope that Anet doesn’t read this and say “That’s a good idea!”, nerf the power damage of FT and make it a condition heavy build, because I just finished my armor set for FT dangit lol

What does 'no endgame' mean, exactly?

I’d wager it means, for most people who say it:

  • Little to no level cap exclusive content
  • No continual stat progression after level cap.

What would those things consist of, though? Raids? Gear grinds? Or something entirely different?

No more convert to pvp or pve!

my problem with PvP is that ther eis no gear progression and you cant show up your gear as a way of “skills” or “time spent”. Nobody even cares about gear there, there is nothing to brag about, and nothing that can tell you you are “progressing”. On top of that you have to decide if your wings are PvE or PvP. PvE where most of the action happens, or PvP where people go to test the different builds since doing it on the actual PvE is near impossible due to money and time gated issues, also fastest way for the daily.

This is because if there was gear progression in PvP, it wouldn’t be a sign of “skills”, it would be a sign only of “time spent”.

But the more extended problem with be that the gear you progress to would BECOME your “skills”. “I pwn noobs cause they suck and I’m awesome!”. No, they pwn noobs because they have 30% more overall stats than the noob does. In fact, they’ve probably become so reliant on those stats that they suck more now at PvP than they did when they first started.

I 100% support GW2 having a stat plateau in sPvP. I would never sPvP again if they changed that.

That said, a cosmetic gear system would be fine by me. Let the best PvPers… or at least the ones who have stuck with it the longest, have the best looks.

What does 'no endgame' mean, exactly?

Tolmos.8395

I see this constantly and I can’t help but wonder, every time… “what does this mean?”

I come from games like Ultima Online, Shadowbane, EVE and Darkfall, where “endgame” means you hit max level (or at least a level at which everything you want your character to be able to do, he can do) and then just run around doing whatever you want. Endgame, to me, means “I don’t have to worry about stats or levels anymore- now I just run around making my own fun!”.

I did play EQ for 1 or 2 years, WoW for about 5 years, and Rift for about 1.5 … their endgames involved gear grinding via raids. Is this what folks want, when they say “no endgame”?

I’m honestly curious. The /age on my account is close to 1,000 hours since headstart (very, very few of those are afk). My main character, my engineer, has 500 of those hours. I still have not done anywhere near all the stuff I want to on that character. So, I’m confused when folks say “there is nothing to do. There is no endgame”.

So what does it mean? When you say those words, what are you wanting to see in this game?

Because Rift is a game that is all about armor and stats, and the solo dungeons dropped the equivalent of this game’s blue armor.

By the time those things released… what was even the point of running them more than once?

I like it better that way. More believable than “I remember you! You’re the hero of the land! You, alone, saved all of us!”. Then they see the guy behind you. “I remember you! You’re the hero of the land! You, alone, saved all of us!”. Then the person behind them. “I remember you! You’re the hero of the land! You, alone, saved all of us!”.

It makes people think “well, I could move and take a ton of damage, or I could sit still in a mobility focused MMO and let this Thief nuke my face with 100% accuracy while I do absolutely no damage”.

It’s essentially a straight up damage increase to any class that gets it, that punishes melee builds and anyone who doesn’t want to sit still like you’re playing WoW.

It’s simply another mechanic that is no fun to deal with.

It did amuse me that on top of this, they gave it only to the 3 most popular PvP classes.

If the patch had released on April 1, I would have thought it was an April Fools joke. :-\

I PLAY AN ENGINEER. Having said that, I don’t think an Engineer should be able to toss turrets onto walls. Instead they should be placed at the Engineer’s feet as having to set them up. We don’t even have technology to do that in modern times. So how could physics be broken to such a ludicrous degree? If anyone reading this has played Portal, what happens when you throw a turret? It falls over due to poor weight balancing. Turrets being able to be thrown onto walls in PVE or WvW is an idiocy. As a person who plays Engineer and enjoys playing it, i think this needs to be fixed. It does not seem right that they could toss them. It would feel much better if you had to place them at your feet, as if having to set it up. I also think the time it takes to deploy a turret should be adequate to time it takes to set up a tripod for anything. This is MY suggestion, does not have to be yours.

EDIT: Anet: This idea would make the Engineer much more fun in my opinion. And the only people who would disagree are the people who enjoy “exploiting” this poor system mechanic. Yes “Exploiting”.

If I were a dev, the first thing I would do is check the person’s account to see if they had a level 80 of whatever class they are going on about. If they don’t, I’d delete the thread and spare anyone else BS.

That’s just me, though

I love housing but I dunno about Rift’s version… something about it, to me, was kinda meh.

I mean, I LOVED the control you had over everything in it, don’t get me wrong… but it took instanced housing to a new extreme. I really like actually seeing the house.

While I don’t expect to ever see UO style housing again, I can at least say I like Aion’s implementation (as long as they add enough low end housing for everyone to get one).

Despite my dislike for the idea of raids, and my extreme like for the idea of housing… it’s the housing that makes me doubt this guy’s story is true.

Many AAA MMOs since WoW have refused to add housing because of a fear that players will abandon the major cities and just chill out in their houses. I can’t say they are entirely wrong, since I would probably do exactly that. So for me, I have a hard time believing Anet would add housing, since some players already complain that cities other than DR and LA are rather hurting for people, even on big servers.

I would love it if that was true, but I have a sneaking suspicion we’re going to see a red post saying “nope” soon.

If I liked and wanted that cosmetic then I would want it to be attainable in a way that wasn’t completely unenjoyable for me.

So, I reiterate- it will only be a problem for me if the items are only available via raiding. As long as they are available anywhere else as well, I can’t see there being any issue.

So what about the dungeon specific stuff that is currently in the game?

It sucks that it’s there… but what can I do? It’s already in the game. All I can do is desperately try to reason with Anet not to make the same mistake twice and hope maybe they listen.

Raiders have nothing to lose, except maybe their sense of entitlement, by having the gear readily available via other means in the games. Non raiders, who could well constitute a LARGE portion of the playerbase, have all the new gear and skins to lose by not having it available to them via a means worth playing.

Sense of entitlement indeed. The players in this game have a hard enough time working as a team with only 5 people, I think if 8-10 people manage to work as a team and beat the hardest PvE content available, they deserve access to something special.

Its your sense of entitlement that says, “I should have it too, even if I’m not willing to do the content.”

As a long time and hardcore raider, I disagree that raids are the hardest PvE content by a longshot. The “hard” part is working everyone’s schedules around each other. After that the tank (usually my job) and the healers kinda sorta have it hard, and the DPS just make sure they tabbed the right mob before spamming their rotation and going back to watching whatever is on their tv at the time. And once in a while, the raid will incorporate a “simon says” mechanic that makes you bounce from one square to another, move at a specific time, pick up an item and take it somewhere in a specific amount of time, etc. That’s about as exciting as it gets :-\

Difficulty isn’t a factor in an MMO. Period. There is nothing designed to be difficult in MMOs, and this won’t be any different. The content is all ridiculously easy so that anyone can do it- that’s the point. So yes, it is a sense of entitlement that raiders feel their playstyle is so much better than everyone else’s that they deserve everything.

I’ve been raiding since Everquest and have NEVER understood that mindset. I raided for the fun. Maybe I was the only one.

Been raiding since EQ1 myself and I seem to remember many, many people and guilds that were unable to make the cut. Unable to beat the content or get as far as other guilds. Every MMO with raiding has seen successful guilds that move through content, and terrible guilds that can’t get it together.

So to quote a friend..
“There may not be any skill, but there sure is a well defined level of suck.” – Synter

Heh, that quote is very true.

That said, 9 times out of 10 its a lack of gear that causes a guild to fail to make it. Some guild decides they want to go for tier 2 gear before even getting their tier 1 completely, and get roflstomped. Nothing will slaughter a guild faster than having someone in “uncommon” quality gear (vs rares) trying to do a higher level raid.

That’s more greed and impatience than a lack of skill, though.

So now you’re entitled to every single cosmetic through every means in the game? There has to be incentive for players to do content, which is through cosmetics and titles; just like they separate out cosmetics in fractals/dungeons/guild missions/etc. There are already a ton of zones that offer exclusive cosmetics.

That mentality within MMOs that no unique reward = no reason to do something is why MMO content is going downhill.

Got news for you bud, that mentality is what built MMO’s. Its practically the core principle that spawned this entire genre.

The only entitlement involved is the entitlement of raiders who feel they DESERVE some item or another. Having multiple paths to get an item type would deal with this issue and open up the items to more than just a single group of players in the game.

Sometimes you have to be willing to share your toys.

As for incentive to do the raids? How about making them fun, and not just sticking a carrot at the end of the raid so that people will suffer through it for the sake of getting said carrot. That mentality within MMOs that no unique reward = no reason to do something is why MMO content is going downhill. Single players games don’t suffer from this issue- you do content because it’s fun, not because you are desperately grinding for some item or another.

It’s really up to Anet to deal with this. They need to announce that Akitteng in a PvP match is against rules. They then need to set a timeout timer, that boots people for not moving x amount of time. Once this is implemented, it becomes clearly a violation of the rules when someone just jumps once every minutes to avoid that timer. At that point, have a new report type added called “Akitten PvP” and let people report that. Bam, problem solved.

Nothing worse than having a 4 on 5 match cause you have 1 person sitting at the entrance watching American Idol instead of playing.

The only reason this news would upset me is if Anet decides to give non-raiders the middle finger and add items that are only attainable via raids. That would change the dynamic of this game too far into a direction that I simply want nothing to do with anymore (I used to be a hardcore raider, years ago…).

As long as I’m pidgeonholed into raiding in order to attain certain items, like we originally were to get ascended gear when FotM came out, I’m really happy that they are adding this in for those who like to. The more playstyles they add to the game, the happier the overall population will be.

This was a huge increase from my logitech headset that cost 45 dollars. What about you guys? What headsets do you prefer to use while playing Guild Wars 2 and why are they different from other headsets?

I have a $120+ set of 7.1 surround, over the ear headphones for that very reason. I would play the game on a 10" screen if I had to, but give me crappy speakers (or no speakers) and I won’t touch it. I’d just assume read a book at that point. Sound is massively important for me.

I doubt the same will ever happen in the case of any NCSoft related properties. There might also be some code shared between NCSoft published products which would create additional roadblocks.

I think a better version of his question would been “commercial AAA MMO”, as opposed to just “commercial MMO”, since indie developments are also considered commercial MMOs and thus more likely to end up open source.

Due to the Random Generator for items one person can put in a million hours do every thing and hit nothing but air, where as another can get a precursor in a week? What is the point?

Sounds to me like it is working as it was intended. To me, it looks like the game was designed so that time is simply not a factor. Someone who only has 2 hours a day to play can be competitive, at least item wise, against someone who plays 12 hours a day. Yea, the latter is going to have much more player skill than the former, but gear wise they will be close to even.

I know it’s frustrating, but you just got unlucky finding one of the only games on the market to do this right now. It’s equally frustrating in other games for those people who have no time, basically being punished for not being able to devote their entire lives to an MMO.

There are MMOs out there that have been long dead which the company that owns the IP STILL refuse to hand out the source code for. The game will never be released again, the IP will never be continued in the future… but it doesn’t matter. Some pieces of code in there contain ‘trade secret’ tricks or something else. Whatever their reason- they won’t be handing out the code for it any time soon.

So for a brand new game? lolnope. Come back after the lifetime of the game, which can range between 5-20 years based on previous MMOs

This post will probably be locked, or deleted or incur me an infraction, but I had to get this off my chest.

I am a helpful person. If you ask a question in map chat, and I can answer it, I will, and I will go out of my way to help you, even by doing the busy work of doing a /wiki to make sure the information I give you is correct. I do this especially if I am in an area that is populated by people who could be new to the game, i.e., a starter area or Lion’s Arch.

Today someone mentioned something about the AOE pick up in map chat and I had previously read the bug forum about it, and after the developer clarification in the thread, was able to get mine working correctly. So I answered the questioner with the information I had found out from the forums, and what had worked for me.

Unfortunately the questioner was one of those people who is never satisfied with any answer, and is really just wanting to gripe. To one of my answers (Not to spam the designated key bind button on the new AOE pickup) they said: I KNOW. And I replied “I do not know what you know, I do not read minds, unfortunately.” I realize that sounds mean, but the “I KNOW” statement is kind of a pet peeve of mine. I hear people say this when someone is trying to help by giving information, and it is really quite silly and in the end, transparently childish. “Don’t make me look stupid!” is what is actually being said.

There is no way for someone helping you in game to know your level of knowledge or expertise and to anticipate beforehand what you do and do not know about a subject you have asked a question about, and to edit their responses so that you do not FEEL stupid. (Your feelings are entirely your own, and although I am polite and friendly in game, and go out of my way to help, I cannot also make it so that everything I say is pleasant to YOUR particular ears.)

Personally, I do not think people who ask questions are stupid, in fact quite the opposite, most of the really intelligent people I know, are those who have asked questions all their lives and gotten many answered. It is these same people with the answers that I go to when I have a question! Of course you do not know this about me, either. You may just assume I am another jerk in a video game.

So as I whispered to the guy an apology if he thought I was being blunt or rude, he blocked me. He may have even reported me. So I took a screen shot of the entire conversation. Just in case. (There was nothing that I said that I believe could be construed by Anet as anything other than helpful, but my paranoia lies deep…)

But I still maintain: No one can KNOW what you KNOW unless they are a mind reader, or have known you a long long long time….and not 3 minutes of chat in a video game.

And Anet, if he reported me, I do have screen shots of the conversation. What he said to me in a whisper, I could have reported HIM for.

As someone who works in IT, I’ve been trying to tell people this for years.

If you do not work in computers, I don’t expect you to know as much about them as I do. I deal with them all day at work, and most nights I go home and play with them all night at home. They are my hobby and my profession. If I don’t know more than someone who doesn’t use them nearly that much, then what in the world is the point of me? lol

So, that said, when I explain something computer related to a non-IT person, I do it on a relatively high level explanation- keep it simple, stupid sort of thing. The reason is that I don’t know how much knowledge you have. You may be surprised at how little some people can know, even down to basic tasks like browsing the net. So rather than make the assumption that you know something, only to find out that you don’t later and half my explanation was wasted, I’ll start from the highest level and work my way down.

I explain computers to people the way I would expect a car mechanic to explain an engine to me.

So, is the new armor they added going to remain permanently as a purchase option or will it be temporary and head out the door after a few weeks?

Just curious if I should buy now for possible future interest or if I can wait until that future interest shows up.

Heroes made GW1 for me. I LOVED them. I would easily pay $50-$100 for an expansion that added them to this game. I blew 200+ hours alone just making and playing with the new Heroes changes they added last year (or was it the year before last?) to GW1.

When I go back to GW1 to play, its because of the heroes since no other game out there has that sort of system in place.

Would <3 this.

Is OP nakoda’s alternate account?

I have no idea who Nakoda is but you asking that either means you don’t spend much time on forums or I don’t post nearly as much as people accuse me of.

Wtf is a “toon”

I dunno why it started, but it’s just what a lot of older MMO players call their too- … characters. Started way back in 1997 or maybe even earlier. Some of us who started MMOing in that year heard it constantly and it kinda stuck lol

I miss Toss Elixir S's GROWTH!

Im so glad you posted this, cause I honestly thought I was remembering wrong when I thought back to that skill. Glad to know it actually did that once upon a time. I feel vindicated.

An idea to fix Engineer BAckpacks ~

Alternatively, if Anet feel that enemies have to be able to see it so they can choose how to fight us, allow us to hide it from ourselves/allies, so only enemies see our backpacks.

This could work, too. I really dont care if an enemy sees my backpack as much as myself or an ally.

So after 10 months and nearly 1,000 hours of playing a pure turret engineer, I have finally (for the first time!) switched to a new build thanks to a combination of the healing turret nerf a couple patches back (the 50% healing reduction) and the flamethrower juggernaut buff this patch.

I have to say… wow. In PvE, flamethrower is kinda sweet in comparison. Running PVT, or some similar combo thereof, and pushing 15-21 constant stacks of might via alchemy makes it a beastly combination in PvE. I can mow through enemies as quickly, with far more durability, than I ever could with my condition P/P turret build.

That said, I don’t feel it has the roaming power of my P/P turreteer in WvW. I practically never lost a 1v1 or even 2v1 on the turreteer build, but with this I am having a little more trouble keeping up. I may simply need to practice more though.

It is definitely a neat playstyle, I have to say.

Not sure what the point of this thread was now that I’ve written it, but its written so on principle I’m gonna post it anyhow.

Yay FT.

How to bring players back to GW2?

An expansion is the only real way to bring people back. If someone isn’t playing, news of a big patch might not reach them. But expansions reach everyone’s ears. One of those would get the marketing necessary to bring in new players, especially if new classes and a new zone was added.

Every time you say “toon” I want to launch a nuke at Blizzard HQ.

Why, when the term was coined in Ultima Online? We PvPers have been using that since 1997 lol. It’s just habit now. Been calling MMO characters that since we first started playing em :-\
