  • Under your moral system
Criminal commits assault > is caught and jailed > serves in a humane correctional facility where there is no negative reinforcement against his or her crimes > is released > 66% likely to repeat their offense > is caught and jailed > serves in the same correctional facility > is released > now even more than 66% likely to reoffend… and the percentage goes up with each return. This is the standard in the United States and most of Europe.
  • Under my moral system
Criminal commits assault > is caught and jailed > serves in a harsh prison where he or she is is treated with the same violence he or she doled out > criminal is as little as 20% likely to reoffend, maximum 30%. And the percentage goes down with each return. Those statistics are based on Japan, which has one of the most successful criminal justice systems of any industrialized country in the world.

Oh really? The US justice system is one that involves people spending 5+ years in a concrete box with murderers, rapists, etc. Brutal physical and sexual assault are a regular occurrence there. Climate control is non-existent, with temperatures in Florida prisons reaching an upwards of 120 degrees in summers (prisoners have been known to literally BAKE TO DEATH.) The cells measure 6′ × 11′ on average.

Some of these inmates get taken a step farther and put into solitary confinement, either for their own safety or as punishment. These individuals spend 23 hours a day alone in lockdown, without the possibility of contact with anyone outside of their own guards. During their 1 hour break they get a break in an outdoor, unshaded and cemented cage sizing twice the size of their cell. This can take place for as long as 25 years, at which point their minds are broken beyond repair. This same form of punishment was a torture reserved by Stalin in his Gulags for only the most heinous of criminals.

American Recidivism Rate: 60%

Norway, on the other hand, has built a prison that roughly resembles a dorm. Air conditioned and containing ample reading and research materials, these dorms house 1 inmate per cell and focus entirely on rehabilitation, NOT revenge as the US justice system does. Photos of this prison/dorm can be seen here at TIME magazine: http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1989083,00.html

Norway Recidivism Rate: 20%

TL;DR – Science and facts, unfortunately, do not support your argument. At all.

Turrets: why are them fooled by mesmers?

Guess people are missing the point: i know that they simply hit whatever is near them, as things stands now. And their terrible AI is well known too.
What i’m saying is that since they are turrets, thus mechanical beings, there is a case where this doesn’t make sense logically; that is, illusions.
If devs wanted, there would be logical reasons to basically make turrets a sort of counter to mesmers’ illusions. Giving them reasons to go after turrets before killing the one who set them up – a thing they do directly, as now.

Meh, in this case I don’t mind the charity of giving this one to the mesmers. Their clones are practically worthless. I’ve never once lost 1v1 to a mesmer, or even remotely come close. They just are badly designed for such all around. Their clones practically run giant neon signs that say “IM NOT THE ORIGINAL”, so there’s no chance of you being tricked.

It’s sort of like a little kid being allowed a headstart in a track race against an Olympic athlete. Let em have it… just let em have it.

I would happily run a big icon next to my nameplate saying what kit I’m using, or an obvious buff or something like that. ANYTHING that would allow me to hide this ugly hobosack on my back when I try to run kits. I would play kits in a heartbeat if not for that…

If I have to guess, until now u’ve been farming in orr, otherwise u would have dropped turret ages ago…
If I’m correct, turret is considered an enviroment weapon (just like the ones u find in front of the gate in CoF), with the exact AI; said so I belive Devs won’t change it as it is working as intended.

If u are planing to do PvE, u can take both Kits or Elixir, and going for condition damage, which at the moment is the strongest build arround.(look arround the forum, u should find penty build with HGH)

Returning to the turret, right now they have a great number of issue: their hitbox, for example, when I drop Healing turret in NULL istance, I would likely activate 2-3 traps at time, even though i’m far away, resulting the turret insta-destroy.

Not really farming Orr as much as doing 100% map completion on my engie, helping friends do events, and such like that by way of PvE. Not a big dungeon guy myself, though I have done a few.

Now, in PvP I have and always will run turrets. My K/D ratio is outstanding and I can count the number of 1v1s I’ve lost since headstart on one hand, and I attribute that greatly to my turrets. I don’t see myself dropping them any time soon for that.

Since I don’t like the kit hobosacks, for now I’ll stick to elixirs. Luckily for me, I have and always will run condition builds so I won’t have to worry about changing out my gear!

I must be doing something wrong, but I don’t think I’ve ever accidentally hit the wrong target. I mean, I’m really trying to remember a time when I have cause I really enjoy kittening about broken stuff, but I just can’t seem to think of one.

Huh… well, if I ever figure out what it is I’m doing, I’ll share. lol

EDIT: For additional info sake- While I have played every class to at least 30, my 80 main that I started at headstart is an Engineer. And when I play, I never let up on the right mouse button. Ever. It is pressed down every second I am playing.

You’ve actually hit at the very root of the problem here Tolmos. For someone like you who never lets up on the right button, you won’t have this issue. I have no idea how many people do that, but for those of us that don’t keep it pressed, it opens up a whole world of possibilities lol.

Both left and right mouse buttons can currently acquire a target, problem is tons of peeps use the right one to pan the camera around. And when you press it(or sometimes even depress it) it likes to target whatever the cursor is hovering over.

~sidenote: doesn’t your finger get tired? XD

lol that makes sense. It’s just how I learned how to play oh so many years ago. But I can see it being an issue that other players have to play the same way as I do in order to achieve the same results. While I do like how the system is now, I also hope they add options in the settings menu for targeting algorithms for others who want to play in different ways.

And no, my finger doesn’t get tired. After 15 years of MMOing, it’s just become second nature. The middle finger on my right hand is the strongest finger of the lot! haha

The turrets just target whatever is closest to them, unless it’s a dragon. It doesn’t matter if that thing is a clone; it doesn’t matter if that thing is invulnerable; it doesn’t matter if that thing is blocked by another object between it and the turret; it doesn’t matter if that thing is an inanimate object, like a table, while you are getting your face bashed in by a herd of centaurs. As long as whatever it is closest to is not a Dragon, it will shoot and attempt to kill it.

I started my engineer at day 1 of headstart, decided to run turrets and have done so ever since. 900 hours later, I’ve pretty much played turrets until I am completely comfortable with them. HOWEVER… it is now time for a change!

My gameplay style has changed drastically now that I have graduated from college and have a full time job, and I find myself doing more Dragon hunting than anything else. I do other things, mind you, but dragons pretty much are the bulk of it (once I get done with them I dont really have free time for much else!). The problem is that turrets ignore dragons entirely. I kind of always assumed that by this point such an obvious and gaping bug in the turret AI would be addressed… but it hasn’t. And that leads me to believe it simply won’t be. Whining won’t change that, I suppose, so it’s time to adapt.

I don’t like kits. Can’t stand the hobosacks, tbh. Sooooo that leaves me with either gadgets or elixirs. Since there is really only 1 gadget I like, it’s elixir time for me! =D

So with that said- any suggestions on a good full elixir build? I have a pretty decent idea, but since I’ve played nothing but turrets I don’t know for sure. So I figure I’ll cut to the chase and ask the more experienced elixir players: do you have any tips for me? =D

Perma death -OR- the dropping of all loot on death, i dont know why, but i feel like this makes MMO’s so much fun for so much longer! Can you imagine how many more guilds would work together so much more seriously, how many people would travel in massive groups, how much RP…. Just the thought makes me kitten. A HC mode of Guild wars 2, where loot tables are quadrupled in favor of the player, and mobs are taken more seriously!

Grr, not sure why i like this, maybe its an immersion thing?

[swear word removed by moderator]

That’s one thing I miss about EvE Online. Death has consequences. If you don’t have a jump clone, you are out of luck. Perma-death really adds to the immersion.

Just to clarify in case someone misinterprets this post- not having a jump clone in EVE doesn’t mean permadeath. It does mean losing about 2-3 weeks worth of character progression, but your character doesn’t permanently die in that situation…

I dunno… I’m all for the addition of this. Besides one or two failed indie MMOs, no game is going to FORCE every player to take park. Like other games with this option, it would only be for people playing “Hardcore Mode” characters, who would get special little things around their nameplate to show off who they are. I’m all for that. If you can make it to level 80+ without dying once, you deserve to be pretty and special.

But I also get entertainment. When that character dies to a random lag spike, I’ll be laughing my kitten off.

They are subpar as a utility class and really have no heal capability… so it’s DPS or gtfo. But they can’t DPS worth a crap, so what does that leave them?

The game isn’t designed around 1v1, but it still happens and can be a pretty solid indicator that something is terribly wrong with a class when 3 of the 4 posts you put here had to do with thieves being imbalanced in 1v1 :-P

Why no /inspect ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tolmos.8395

Ha, this is not discussion, this is just a polite argument. Seriously. 8-9 months without the need for Inspect, why ask for it now? Why not 8-9 months ago? Or in beta? Obviously no one minded, why is this even an issue. As long as people are divided, this idea is going no where. In my opinion, however the cons of this feature far outweigh any “Pros” for it to be of any use to the game.

PROS:
1 Can be selective in grouping for those who wish to be selective
2 Assist with helping guildmates and friends who are new to 80
3 Determine what certain weapon or armoor skins are that you see people sporting
4 Explore different builds on other players for ideas on your own character

CONS:
5 Could possibly increase elitism (no evidence for or against this)
6 Privacy concerns
7 EDIT: FROM TOLMOS: Players can be turned off the game after being booted at a dungeon for having sub-optimal gear

Arguments against
1 Being selective is rude and will ruin my gameplay

2 Why would one argue against helping guild mates or friends?

3 “I don’t want people to know what I am wearing, because I want to be unique in my appearance”

4 Unsure why one would be against this, but perhaps privacy argument?

5 There is no evidence to support this. At this point it is all speculation.
5b People can party up with friends or guildees, or be specific on gw2lfg.com what they are looking for. Inspect can only help enforce any requirements gw2lfg.com specified.
5c There are already elitist people in this game and there is nothing being done against this

6 You do not own your character, and thus hold no privacy rights to the character.
6b Your privacy concerns are not a serious concern, because they are not protecting real world information (such as SSN, SIN, Credit card, address info etc)

7 Players may be turned off the game from having super hard dungeons that they run in sub optimal gear, and that their guildmates will have a harder time helping them pass this given the no inspect feature

I may have missed something, but have been following this thread for awhile and tried to some up every argument from both sides of the pro’s and con’s. Please let me know if I missed and I will edit and add.

From my summary, at this time, the Pro’s seem to outweigh the Con’s.

I have been following this thread since the beginning, and this seems to be an accurate account of all the feelings that have been discussed. I’m glad someone was keeping score. You were even nice enough to include that guy that was worried about “people stealing his look,” haha.

Edit; In an attempt to add a little levity to this discussion…argument…discussument…lol. In WoW, i used to run with “show target’s target” on, so the target you had selected also showed their target.

So, i’d find myself hanging out in IF, /inspecting someones gear…not really thinking about it, then suddenly I would pop up as that person’s target. It would be an awkward moment where i realized that that person just realized i had been staring at them or /inspecting them. At that point i would quickly mount up and take off…i dunno it felt just as awkward as if you were just caught staring at someone IRL…haha. Good times…

It’s a pretty accurate assessment of the PRO side of the discussion, but it leaves a great deal lacking for the CON side of the discussion. All together it is an exceptionally biased post that ignores many of the points made in the thread.

A video game elitist is an individual who only socializes with others that they deem worthy. Within video games they create a clique (commonly a guild or clan) and only allow those individuals to participate in their activities while viewing themselves better than everyone else in the society.

When the majority of your school life was spent being picked on by others, you have to make up for it by being awesome and better than everyone somewhere. Might as well be a video game.

From my summary, at this time, the Pro’s seem to outweigh the Con’s.

Hrm…

Pros:
1) Elitists can be more elite
2) People wanting to be carried through dungeons can have an easier time of it
3) I can’t actually see a good argument for why you would even want this? (1 freebie pro!)

Cons:
1) Players can get turned off of the game the first time they try to run a dungeon and get booted because their gear wasn’t good enough
2) The entrance into getting gear will become far more steep. It will become a catch 22 of “you need good gear to run the instance, but you need to run the instance to get good gear”.
3) If you ever find a good look, you will suddenly find a dozen people who look exactly like you.
4) “Link me ur purples”
5) Random messages from ignorant fools who read that some build is the best ever, and without doing any math themselves believe it. Therefor anyone with a better build who simply doesn’t want to share it with anyone will get kittened at constantly by said people QQing because they don’t understand your gear layout
6) Not that your build being secret would be a problem anymore, because- oh yea. That would likely be part of the inspect too.

From my summary, at this time, the Cons seem to outweigh the Pros.

See what I did there? Making a biased “argument” post and then declaring a victor based on your own bias wont achieve much…

You’re right, we don’t stop people from looking at us in the street. Just like we don’t stop people from looking at us in the game. But if someone on the street suddenly ran up and tried to rip open my bag and dig through the contents to see what I had on me, or started peeling back my shirt to see what sort of undershirt I was wearing, we would have some words. Same as in game.

Add inspect, make it optional (like Aion). Problem solved. Those who demand to be able to inspect can just pass by people who refuse to activate it just like they would if that person had poor gear.

This method actually makes an awesome method to weed out players both sides don’t want to deal with. Even after full ascended gear releases, and I’m running full purples WoW style, I STILL won’t turn mine on; and if someone whines to me about it I’ll know I don’t want to group with them. Whammo- we both realize the other isn’t someone we want to run with and a miserable party experience is avoided.

Tolmos.8395

While I don’t particularly like the idea, I can see GW2 added > 5 man content simply because GW1 had it. I don’t think the game will ever add raiding of the style that WoW or Rift has, but I could definitely see GW1 style 10-12 people groups.

The primary difference between the two being that raids in WoW and Rift are pretty much celebrated in their design, being unique instances that take for freaking ever. GW1, on the other hand, just… did it. It’s like “Ok, this place requires 12 people. Its no more special or longer than any other mission or instance, but you need 12 people to get through it. Bye!”

What are you talking about? All the “Elite” missions in Guildwars 1 were both longer and harder than the “Norm”. On top of that all of the “Elite” content in Guildwars 1 had hardmode. The first time I ran Urgoz on hardmode it took me atleast an hour and we didn’t even finish. The “Elite” content in Guildwars 1 was very similiar to modern mmo “Raids”. You had a large group, some trash and some bosses, that seems to be the formula for most “Raids”.

The difference in time and difficulty really wasn’t so much that I noticed it, tbh. :-\ I farmed The Deep pretty regularly and it felt about the same as the rest of the game, except I had 4 more players with me. And I liked that a lot.

What is "skill"?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

For many players in other MMOs, the word “Skill” is synonymous with “Gear”. The raiders are “skilled”, everyone else isn’t. The hardcore PvPers wearing the top end PvP gear are “skilled”, the “noobs” wearing greens (regardless of the player behind the wheel) are not.

In FPS games and other games were everyone is of a base stat plateau, skill literally means 1 player’s ability to win against opponents/survive the game world.

In this game it’s a bit of both. For me, at least, when I whine about something not requiring skill I mean that I could do it with minimal thought and effort on my part as a player. My character, wearing all exotic gear and being level 80, can complete the task with me watching Dr. Who on the side monitor and only mildly paying attention to the game in my peripheral vision.

To date, with the exception of a few jumping puzzles, that pretty has described 99% of my GW2 PVE experience :-P

The closest to a high skill PvE battle I’ve had in this game was on the heart of the mist island. Go to where the various class sparring partner NPCs are. On the right side are 2 kind of close together- the warrior and the thief. Aggro both of them together and try to win. Be honest about it- don’t get the warrior to half health and THEN aggro the thief. 1 autohit on the warrior, then run to the thief (or the other way around). Dont fight back until both are fighting you.

THAT is a skill based PvE fight, IMO. It took me several tries before I could regularly beat that duo.

As a former “hardcore” raider, you are way off base with this assumption.

As I am also a former hardcore raider from both WoW and Rift, I stand by my statement.

Where's the Challenge? Like old times...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

So, for those who feel as the OP does, what actually constitutes challenge in an MMO? What constitutes skill? Does challenge consist of so much mob damage that any mistake means failure? Does skill mean perfect play? I see posts about dungeon groups where they seem to be demanding perfect play, but that seems more like the practice effect that eisberg refers to.

I’m honestly curious, because this game seems plenty challenging in spots. However, mob AI that can be predicted is always going to present little challenge once you’ve learned its moves — assuming the math is tuned so the encounter can be done at all.

I already answered this on your other thread but I’ll add something here. One hit kills are overboard on the skill challenge, mainly because lag can set you up to take that hit. But a mob than can 3 shot you and attacks pretty often would certainly be a good start, for me at least.

Thanks, mate. Iirc, you were the only one who answered in that thread, so thanks for that also. I assume that 3-shotting is relative to the amount of time it takes you to finish the fight? 3 shotting with 2 dodges, a block and a heal when it can get 8-10 hits off before you can kill it would be different than the other extreme, where it can only get 1-2 off.

Do you know the chicken event in Malchor’s? The new Veteran Chickens Shoot Egg ability is doing 3k to 4.5 K through 2580 armor, they use it every few seconds, the tell is similar to the one they use for their Peck ability which does much less, and the timing to dodge it is fairly tight. On FC, this event used to complete all the time. Now, I see that someone has maybe killed 1 of them, then left — presumably because it was too hard.

Er, I meant 2-3 shotting in relation to consecutive hits I can take without a heal. If you manage to land 2-3 blows on me and I can’t find a way to get my health back up, I die.

If they do this, though, I’d like to see 1 more endurance bar added to the gauge so we can dodge 3 times on a full bar.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/How-to-counter-get-out-of-jail-free-button/2125456
(engineer got thief down to 5% health but thief ran away)

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/warrior/How-are-Warriors-in-1v1
(asking about how warrior does in 1 vs 1)

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/elementalist/3-minute-fight-with-thief-in-WvW-any-tips/2121509
(ele fought thief for 3 min)

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/Beat-A-Thief/2104628
(necro asking for tips on how to beat thief in 1 vs 1 in WvW)

there could be more but these will do for now …

wouldn’t a simple “guild wars 2 is not balanced for 1 vs 1” put an end to all those discussions?

so what do you think?

The game isn’t designed around 1v1, but it still happens and can be a pretty solid indicator that something is terribly wrong with a class when 3 of the 4 posts you put here had to do with thieves being imbalanced in 1v1 :-P

Thoughts on Raiding

While I don’t particularly like the idea, I can see GW2 added > 5 man content simply because GW1 had it. I don’t think the game will ever add raiding of the style that WoW or Rift has, but I could definitely see GW1 style 10-12 people groups.

The primary difference between the two being that raids in WoW and Rift are pretty much celebrated in their design, being unique instances that take for freaking ever. GW1, on the other hand, just… did it. It’s like “Ok, this place requires 12 people. Its no more special or longer than any other mission or instance, but you need 12 people to get through it. Bye!”

Need I remind you of the way MMO’s use to be?

1) spam an area for a group for several minutes/hours.
2) Meet group in one area of the map.
3) kill the same mob or mobs till you got bored and logoff.

yup, that was alot of fun

So you played Final Fantasy XI as well, huh? =D

Why no /inspect ?

Without using intentionally incendiary language, it seems the players that care most about performing at their best— through practice and fine-tuning gear and builds, are also the ones that would like to see /inspect.

The players that play for fun—-use builds they enjoy, don’t care about getting the most optimal gear—- are worried they will be subjected to the same standards as the top tier players. They feel that /inspect will expedite the “elitists” ability to subjugate players that don’t perform to their standards.

There are some of us who do care about optimal builds that don’t care about the /inspect either.I will judge your ability to play based on how you do in the dungeon, not what you are wearing.

That said, why am I against it? Because the people who want it the most, and abuse it the most, are folks who want to be CARRIED, not elitists. They don’t want their team to be optimal because it brings out the best in themselves; they want the team to be optimal so they can get run through by the best and have others make up for their own shortcomings.

When someone is forming a group and demanding specific stats/gear, the first thing I do is inspect THEM. And, in my experience, the majority of the time they come up lacking. Of course they throw out all kinds of BS excuses “I know what I’m doing! I’m the one forming the group!” And the rest of the well geared players get duped into this little scheme so he can get into an instance he is neither skilled nor geared for, simply by riding on the backs of the players around him.

I don’t use /inspect in any game, even when raiding. I’ll take you… and if you fail miserably to keep up with the pace of the group, I’ll replace you. I’ll give you a couple of chances, and I won’t judge you based on your gear. I will make the assumption that unless you specifically tell me “I don’t know if I’m geared for this”, that you know the requirements and are joining with that in mind.

I can’t think of a valid reason they would NEED to do this, so I would bet good money this was just a “bug fix” that had been on the docket since headstart. There are a lot of those out there. They likely had no idea that RPers cared so much for the zone, and if you make enough noise you might be able to get them to bring it back.

Incoming LFG Tool?

The website will ALWAYS be better than any in game LFG tool. Putting that out there right now.

Once the in game tool is launched, the website is likely to die, better or not better. Less and less people will use it, which will make it not better..even if it turns out to have been better.

I’m guessing the in game tool is harder to grief though. Anyone can post your name on the site. It’s happened to me on a few occasions.

I think you’ll find that people will shun the crap LFG tool for the good website.

lmao I’ll take that bet.

The guy who made the website was smart, and probably made some serious bank off of the idea, but at the end of the day folks will use whatever is easiest and most convenient to get to. Oh sure, some hardcore fans of the site will likely keep at it for a while, but I can’t see your average player minimizing and browsing a third party webpage when they can just hit a hotkey and go ingame.

So yea, I’ll take that bet. I don’t see the website surviving more than a couple of weeks, tops, after the tool is released.

Easiest to hardest prof. to use well?

Tolmos.8395

Easiest to Hardest:

1. Warrior
2. Ranger
3. Guardian
4. Thief
5. Elementalist
6. Necromancer
7. Engineer
8. Mesmer

I agree with this list pretty well. Ranger and Guardian could be switched out if you wanted, as well as elementalist and necro, but this is the general idea of it. Thief can shoot up to the top if you are talking about PvP.

Warrior, guardian and Rangers are by far the easiest to use well. They are pretty simplistic and straight forward in design and gameplay, and usually the perfect classes for first time MMOers or MMOers who aren’t interested in having to keyboard dance.

Thief is also pretty straight forward, but it has the added bonus of being squishy and lacking AOE utility or weapon attacks.

Elementalist, Engineer and Mesmer get into a whole new line of difficult, however. These classes introduce far more buttons that need to be kept up with, while still being limited to the same and often LESS dps than the top 4 classes. So as opposed to classes 1-4, which require 2-4 button rotations for max DPS, these require 8-10 buttons for max rotation (element switching, kit swapping and clone exploding) to achieve max DPS.

Ele, while more squishy than engie, has more utility and more damage (which is sad to say considering how little damage it really does in some weapon specs. It requires some serious keyboard dancing to play right. It can be downright exhausting playing one. LOTS of ground target AOE, as well, depending on your weapon.

Necro is on par with the 1-4 classes on keyboard dancing, but it’s just weak. WEAK. Playing a necro well means handling playing a massively underdog class. To play a necro well requires more luck than anything… And if you go staff, prepare for hardcore ground target AOE.

Engineer requires a lot of keyboard dancing as well. Between the kit swapping and keeping up with the toolbelt, a good engineer will never have idle fingers. Like their Ele and Necro counterparts, lots of ground target AOE here, too. These guys are pretty high on the list not only because of the above listed reasons, but also because of their general lack of DPS. They’ve been nerfed into oblivion since release, turning them into a pure utility class. Even the best engineer couldn’t expect to produce the same DPS, in any situation, as an equally skilled/geared warrior. The class just isn’t designed to do that.

And finally the mesmer. In PvE, Mesmers are squishy, have funky cooldowns and deal as much damage as a 6 year old girl with a foam sword. Their “clones” run around with huge neon signs saying “I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL”, so don’t expect to trick anyone with it, and die at the slightest gust of a breeze. I’ve played one of each class to higher levels, with 1 exception: Mesmer. It was just too… annoying.

Yea, the general design of fractals is pretty hair brained. Not sure who decided to make entry into them basically require charity on the part of others… basically- if you aren’t someone who started the day it came out, you are gonna have a tough time.

All together, it’s not a very smart design. :-\

what was the reason we couldn’t get an option to hide backpacks again?

Just gonna take a guess it’s for the same reason a warrior can’t hide their greatsword.

That’s incomparable. We are asking for the backpacks, not the guns, to be made invisible. Having a warrior swinging thin air because his entire sword is invisible would look ridiculous. We’d still wield the gun- it’s the hobo sack that serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever that we want hidden.

If someone can’t tell the difference between my wielding a grenade kit and a flamethrower just by looking at my weapon and the attacks I do, a backpack isn’t going to help them further…

Why no /inspect ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tolmos.8395

Another reason this game will never see /inspect is because of the idea of build secrets.

People are saying that skilled players will always run the optimal build- indeed. However, they will be running the best known optimal build.

Lets face it, the majority of players who consider themselves skilled really aren’t so much when it comes to character building and determining stats. They go on the forums, find what others claim to be the best, do a few test runs to make sure the DPS seems solid and run with that. But few sit down and actually figure out for themselves what produces the highest DPS, HPS, etc.

Now the question is… where is the rule that the person who finds the most optimal build must share that build? Sure, it’s a kitten move to keep it yourself, but it is also their right. So that means one of two things happens- either some imbecile who is too unskilled to see to what is going on looks at the dude’s armor and goes “wtf? You aren’t wearing what forums says is the best build layout! You are crap! FAIL! /boot” OR someone who does know what they are doing looks at the armor and then the player’s playstyle, puts 2 and 2 together and has a pretty solid chance at remaking their build.

To some players, neither is acceptable.

Forgetting people who don’t want to be looked down on, even among elitists the idea of the inspect wouldn’t fly. It would really only server 2 purposes- being used by fails to find people to carry them more quickly or it could be used by snoops to steal others’ builds.

Luckily for us, the post has been filled with almost unanimous comments replying “Please no” to /inspect. Arenanet would have to be on something majorly trippy to add it at this point.

But but… we NEED inspect so that I can make sure the people in my group can carry me effici-… I mean, so that I can know they are up to par with what is “needed” in the dungeon. Yea, that’s it…

tl;dr- skilled players don’t need inspect and don’t have to dictate their teammates builds. They can succeed even when one player is a little behind the others. The rest just cry and whine and chime about “teamwork” as being the reason for them needing inspect; aka: people carrying them quickly and efficiently.

Easy to use, easy to access in game group finder utility so that players don’t have to go to a 3rd party application to build their group. It would be quick, simple and yet innovative. It would work for both open world and instanced content.

And then I would offer to make it for them, cause I’ve yet to see a game do it right and feel confident I could build one that would rock
