Any word on turret AI fix?

Tolmos.8395

It’s been close to 9 months since release and we have… nothing. Don’t get me wrong I can handle and adapt to a lot of things that are going on with engies, but this is one issue that is downright gamebreaking for me.

Since release, turrets have had 2 gaping flaws in their design.

A) They don’t distinguish between invulnerable targets and vulnerable ones. Take the Champion Modniir Ulgath (I think thats his name… the centaur shaman). He spawns an army of invulnerable air elementals to toss you left and right. All of my turrets focused entirely on those elementals, instead of on the shaman! Not a single turret shot the shaman!

B) They don’t fight dragons. They seem to have some sort of religious conviction against hurting dragons, because they just refuse to do it. I have placed my turrets between the toes of a dragon’s target able foot… nothing. Not even a puff of smoke from my flame turret in its general direction. This, of course, nullifies my supply crate during those battles too.

Of course, there are also the annoyances of having turrets give target priority to things they shouldn’t- like destructible environment items (tables, supplies, etc in centaur camps) or mobs that are on the opposite end of the fighting area than the one that is beating your face in with a giant wooden club.

This isn’t a small issue. For a turreteer like me, this is beyond game breaking and it’s a real shock that it has lasted as long as it has. :-\ Not only do they not help, but they become a liability to me because their existence on the field neutralizes my ability to use any of my toolbelt skills. So keeping them out at all is a detriment. That means that during dragon fights and during fights with invulnerable NPCs, all of my utility skills are rendered worthless and I have to play with utilities that I’m not specced for :-\

So I have to ask… what’s the word on this? Is it being looked into? Is it even on Anets radar? Or should we just get used to the fact that turrets simply don’t work right and never will in the future?

Even a forced target acquisition button, like that ranger’s F1 skill, would be all I could hope for. If I can just MAKE my turrets attack my target, then that’s all I need.

I would never use one of those bad ideas.

I’d use the 25% movement increase when it came to dragon battles, since my supply crate is 100% worthless against them anyway.

What to buy with gems?

in Players Helping Players

Tolmos.8395

My advice- avoid the RNG items. No chests, no dye packs, no supply crates or whatever.

There are far too many things to use gems on that are useful and a flat rate. I always start with bag slots, then bank slots, then character slots. After that, some flat rate cosmetic items are a huge plus, like the new quiver. Finally, as I level up alts I’ll have to redo some of those bag purchases and also buy some more transmute stones if I have a look I want to go for that isn’t heritage armor.

Spending gems on RNG in this game is VERY unrewarding, and as a player to another player I cannot suggest strongly enough to avoid it. Especially with so many flat rate things you can buy.

2500 HOURS!? in one game?

Wow. Just wow.

Since the game has been out roughly 8.5 months.
8.5 × 30 days = 255 days
2500/255 = 9.8 hours every day since launch.

You sir need to go outside for a bit.

Im also having a hard time wrapping my head around it.

I have ~2500 hours in GW1. But I played that game from the day it released (didn’t play beta and there wasn’t a headstart- just the day it hit store shelves) until GW2 released (some odd 6-7 years later). >_> I can’t imagine logging all of that time over the course of 9 months.

I’m going to save this reply and use it against people who try to say raids and trinity in this game are an absolute must for it to thrive. =D

This is the sort of defense of this practice i see a lot on here. It’s not about having to have the items, it’s about wanting to have them. Comparing real life luxury items, with in game items is really a bit silly, don’t you think?

No, I don’t. I see no difference at all in the purchase of real life luxury item and a virtual luxury item. And cosmetic skins are just that, luxury items. I don’t like the rng system any more than you do, but let’s not pretend these cosmetic skins are required to enjoy the game.

I agree with most of what you said, but you worded that last line incorrectly. They are not required to be SUCCESSFUL in the game, but whether or not they are required to enjoy the game is 100% subjective. For some players, aesthetics are a big part of a game and if they find an aesthetic they desire for their character and have no valid way of attaining that item, it can indeed kill their enjoyment of the game.

It would be like a raider being told there is a raid in the game and they have a random chance of getting to play it. You might be thinking “That’s different. That’s actually playing!”. No, it isn’t. That’s what a raider enjoys doing. Aesthetics is what others may enjoy. The way you are thinking about aesthetics, I am thinking about that raid. Me being able to enter that instance doesn’t affect my enjoyment in any way, shape or form, so I wouldn’t care if it was RNG.

Anet added this RNG in with super low chances knowing full well that it would kill the enjoyment of the game for certain individuals. That’s impossible to deny. But it’s that same fact that brings in so much money for them- those people are going to spend spend spend (if they can) to get those items to increase their own enjoyment.

They know those players want their next hit, and Anet is the only provider for them.

Heroes from GW1. And swappable skills from GW1.

I played about 2500 hours total on GW1. 1500 before heroes were introduced, and another 1000 doing the same content over again with heroes just because they were so much fun to gear and set up builds with. Heroes were probably one of the most amazing features I’ve seen added to an MMO, and I’m sad to see it go.

What do you do when you have 9 characters (8 of them level 80 w/ multiple weapons some multiple gear sets and cultural tier 3 armor) and you’re getting stomped in wvw, you have no need for dungeon running because everyone’s geared, and there just isn’t anything you really want to do but you still want to play.? I’d think farm for the chance of a good drop. As if you haven’t killed this game enough with the drop nerfs, you slid a few more things in there. I just wonder where it’ll end. The chances of getting an exotic drop with 130% MF are 0 .0000000001% but if the sky falls and you do get one, it’s one of the “many” 1 gold one’s that you added (worthless). Now I can’t press ctrl to view my missed drops. lmao. You sincerely want me to miss the few drops that I do get ? Come on guys. I’ve been a good player. Spent 500-600 US $‘s in the gem store and I’m just one player. You guys can’t be hurting for gem sales that bad. Bad enough to ruin the game.? Just killed an orr boss and didn’t get the daily. Not sure if you took daily chests out and I don’t wanna know. I look forward to playing this game when I get home and I play it so much that I need to switch things up. I need to farm every now and then to refresh. I know you’re relying on new players but they’ll run out eventually. Think about the guys that have been here since beta and head start before it’s too late. PLEASE.. Don’t kill the best game I’ve ever played so soon

This basically shines a huge, glaring light at the problem with MMOs today.

For anyone who plays Skyrim, or any other single player RPG- how many of you explore a dungeon or do a task because you want the mad loots at the end? I dunno about you, but not me. What about Sandbox MMOs? Do you focus most of your tasks around mad loots at the end? Not me.

Why? Because actually doing the stuff is fun to me in those games. But most modern MMOs have gotten rid of the concept of making content fun and instead just make it rewarding. The end result? “I don’t have any more gear to get from this instance… why should I run it?!”.

That isn’t the fault of the player, it’s the fault of the game itself that its content just isn’t enjoyable enough to run more than a couple of times on its own merit :-\

That just bugs me with MMOs sometimes.

Hardcore characters?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

I dunno… IMO, if I were a game dev, I wouldn’t do it for fear of losing players to stupid stuff. I mean- what if you have a hardcore character being played by someone who puts tons of money into gems each month cause they are super serious about the game. Then, one day, that person hits a lag spike in the middle of a champion mob fight… suddenly you risk losing all that gem income every month if he rage quits the game over it, and all because of something out of your control.

If it were me, and someone suggested I implement that into my game, I would “nope” my way out of the conversation as quickly as I could.

That said, for my more realistic stance as a player- I’m all for it. It wouldn’t affect me adversely AND there would be many lulz to be had at the horror stories of people losing their characters to stupid stuff like the above. =D

Anet is starting to feel more and more like that guy in a trench coat standing in an alley that wants you to try your luck at finding the cup with a coin under it.

This is probably the most true statement I have read. I have stopped buying RNG items and will never purchase another. I’ll purchase gems, but only for flat rate services/items that I know what I’m getting. It is simply too unrewarding for me, personally, to buy into those chests.

Unfortunately, if the business model is working for them then I don’t see it ever stopping. Which is a shame…

Temporary Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

I can see why they are doing the revolving temporary content, but not the one time only.

For revolving- it makes the game look like more content is being produced than there is. If they pop out the content as permanent, then we’ll play it, finish it and never go back. Also, this time next year they have to produce even more new content to put out, or folks will say “But what about last year?! This year sucks!”

Doing it this way, they are guaranteed to have content to push out every holiday, in between those holidays, etc. They can keep a constant flow of patches going without having to put in the work of needing to produce new content. And there is also the hope that since we weren’t able to play it after all that time, it will feel new and shiny to us again.

I have no explanation for the 1 time content, but the temporary content is a pretty sound business decision since it can be used as a “gift that keeps on giving”. Sucks for us players, but it makes them look good in the long run.

Any word on Dragon lag fix?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

A few precursor bits of info here:

A) My computer is a beast. At no point do I experience exceptionally low framerates during the dragon battle. I hold a solid 20-25FPS DURING the battle, 40-50 soloing around the world (all max visuals)
B) Considering I’m a software dev by trade and a long time gamer, I’d like to think I do know the difference between server and client side lag
C) But in case you don’t buy B- I constantly monitor my connection on another computer screen. 12ms pings against google with 0 packet loss
D) I am on Tarnished Coast server

OK! Now that the above info is out of the way…

Nighttime battles against dragons can be pretty rough for me Skill lag can be rather insane during Teq and Jormag, taking as long as 6-8 seconds for one of my skills to register that I hit it and go off. My client is showing it as being pressed (the skill starts flickering like “hey, I’m about to go off!”, but the skill doesn’t actually activate for those 8 seconds.

The dragon battles are awesome. I love them. But at the same time, this skill lag kills my interest in them entirely. Rather than battling for the fun of it, I’m just there for the reward. Rather than using strategy or skill, I’m just hitting buttons and hoping SOMETHING will activate and get a few more points of damage done in my name. It’s rather unfortunate, since the dragon mechanic is amazing

So I was curious- is there any mention of whether this is being looked at, or is it something we’ll just need to get used to?

I don’t miss raids. I didn’t mind them in GW1 because of heroes, but in GW2 I don’t think I’d like the idea.

I would, however, be very open to it if the raiders could understand that GW2 is all about making rewards available to all paths, so anything a raider could get in their raid could also be gotten by another player in fractals or doing an open world Dragon boss. To this day, I’ve yet to see a game with raiders who didn’t feel an extreme sense of entitlement, however, declaring that their way to play the game is the only right way and therefor they DESERVE the gear and no one else does.

If the GW2 community could raid without that childish, entitlement driven, mindset then it wouldn’t affect me one way or the other if raids were introduced so I wouldn’t care at all.

I feel farming is mandatory, so why keep nerfing it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

Its not like farming nerfing is anything new in this particular genre. The faster you farm, the faster you make it through content. A company would rather you run the same instance 1,000 times than 100 times, so if they find out you have a method to move at a faster pace then they WILL slow you down.

The longer you are in the game farming, the more likely you are to buy gems. Simple as that. Why would they let you complete something in a hundred runs when they can make you take many hundreds of runs and keep you in the game longer?

as much as I love this, it won’t happen.

The hobosacks serve an important purpose, telegraphing to other players what skills you have. Much like how you know what a warrior can do when they have a rifle equipped, players need to know what an engineer can do when they have a kit out. While this is a non-issue for the flamethrower and the elixer gun, the others either have very small weapons (tool) or none at all (’nade and bomb).

I’m not too keen on this method as a) the sacks aren’t that visually distinct (especially on an Asura) and b) you don’t get to see much of them if your target is facing you.

I would love to see the sacks go away, but that would require them putting in weapon “skins” for the bomb and grenade kit and likely reworking the wrench for the tool kit to make it more obvious which is which.

Whenever I hear this argument, I immediately think of the stupid people in infomercials. You know the ones- given simple, very easy to do tasks and they fail miserably at it, so they need some completely useless thing to help them accomplish it.

If I’m running around spitting flames from a huge gun, a backpack is not going to help someone determine my skillset if they haven’t figured out I’m not wielding the grenade kit yet.

The game shouldn’t be geared entirely around stupid people. Yes, concessions can be made, but if they can’t see the obvious already, I shouldn’t be made to suffer in order make it even more painfully obvious.

Colin Johnson said he is working on the hobosack issue. He realized it was an issue when he tried to put on the 8 bit backpack and it covered the backpack up.

Finally. Not like we haven’t been whining about kit hobosacks since day 1 of headstart (some as long as beta).

My vote- make the kit hobosack hideable, like the regular hobosack. I don’t care if you add a buff, nameplate, whatever over my head alerting all to what kit I am using; that is fine by me. If they really need to see a backpack to figure out whether I am using the alchemy gun or grenade kit, then so be it- give them a giant sign to look at and go “OH! That huge gun spitting flames all over the place isn’t a medkit! Good thing they told me, I would have mistaken that for sure!”

Just… let us hide the stupid hobosacks.

I agree with what the OP overall wants, but disagree with how he wants it.

I would prefer if Anet just renamed the current weapon set to what it really is: “Shotgun”. Fine, let us keep using rifles for the shotgun slot, but don’t beat around the bush. This isn’t a rifle. It doesn’t fire like a rifle, it isn’t used like a rifle. It’s a shotgun, plain and simple.

THEN, add a rifle slot to us. It would give us that additional weapon option so many of us crave.

The only purpose increasing levels to 100 would achieve is obsoleting the rewards from all current level 80 content, basically turning it into a temporary content. That’s the ONLY thing it would accomplish.

I can’t see how that is a good thing. I would rather them build on top what of currently exists- an entire xpac of additional level 80 content. Can you imagine what it would be like for a new player? To hit 80 and have twice as much stuff they could do as we have now? Twice as many skins available. Twice as many ways to get gear?

OR, they could increase the level cap and our endgame can once against be sparse and barren because they focused entirely on the 80-100 “experience”.

Tough choice there…

i dont really see a need of increasing the level cap…

Thought is very easy to level up…doesnt take…time, the thing would be people would need to get lvl 100 ascended and legendary/exotic stuff unless they dont add lvl 81+ stuff and just increase the level for you to use more traits…who knows.

With an expac it would be used to slowly introduse players to new area’s and new consepts much like what level 1—80 dose now.

That’s unnecessary. Guild Wars 1 didn’t require such an introduction, as it kept max level static for the entire game. And you know what? People LOVED it. Bragged constantly about how awesome it was compared to the WoW/EQ model of constant level increases.

i don’t want to re-grind everything but 20 additional traits would be AWESOME

Tell me exactly when you had to gained for level 80 or for gear that let you play max level content.????

For a brand new, casual, player it would take ~1 month post 80 of karma farming to get the exotics they need to be accepted into fractals. Without that armor, when asked to ping they would simply get laughed out of groups.

It would take several months if you count the time to level up.

And of course, all this ascended gear everyone is currently so proud of would be tossed to the wayside. I’d get a small chuckle out of that, at least… =D

I can see an expansion having an increase to 100 but an update to 100? What purpose would a level update have anyways. The game scales yiu accordingly so let’s say we’re all now 100, we go to an old dungeon and now were downscaled to 80. I just don’t see any reason for this game ever. This game focuses more around builds and play style. Leveling is this part that’s in the way of that all and increasing the level cap would do nothing or prove nothing positive. I’ve yet to hear why increasing the level cap would have any positive features at all?

That point of view has been the general consensus on forums. There have been threads 500+ replies long that are almost unanimous “Oh god please don’t implement more levels. Leave us at 80”.

Still doesn’t change the fact that it’s coming :-\

nothing to fear there bud. The way these bots teleport is by using a feature in the game in an unnatural way in that they teleport just after they finish that last swing getting that last bit of ore. It’s very noticeable. There is literally no time for them to humanly open up the world map, click on the one they wish to teleport to next and then have a load screen. They just go poof instantly.

This is a terrible way to watch for someone teleport hacking and I strongly recommend everyone use this as an example of what NOT to look for.

It is completely possible to open your map while the mining/chopping/gathering is going on. If you have been playing for 600+ hours, you know when that third “clang” of the mining pick it going to strike, so you have the waypoint up and ready to go. The second it goes off, you click “Yes”. Off you go.

I do this constantly. If people reported based on this alone, I can’t imagine how many man hours have been wasted on Anet having to review my account based on all of those erroneous reports >_>

I can’t complain- I finally got a quiver I like for my ranger. And if they would add combat wearable glasses to the gem store, I’d buy those in a heartbeat.

giving this another shot

Well… There’s still nothing to do PVE wise,, still no skill-based dungeons/team setups RIP GW1

Forums can’t be made happy.

Thread 1: “OMG THIS kitten IS TOO HARD! GIVE ME TRINITY SO I CAN PLAY WITHOUT SKILL”
Thread 2: “ZOMG THIS kitten IS TOO EASY! GIVE ME SOMETHING HARDER TO PROVE MY MANLINESS IN!”

Which is it, people?!

DPS and Meters

Given that the only real “end game goal,” in Guild Wars 2 is improving your own ability/skill at the game, and the only real way to measure your ability at the game is your DPS, I personally feel that a DPS meter is a very necessary addition to the game.

So I guess tanky/support playstyles either require no skill or have a such a low skill cap it can be achieved by anyone and never be improved, ok gotcha. Dps has absolutely nothing to do with skill as far as I’m concerned-that is more tied to your gear and traits set up; surviving encounters is more skill based. “Oh look I can do consecutive 15k hits to kholer in AC! Too bad I never cleanse any conditions, attack the adds or even dodge his instant-down skill so I’m down more often than not and cause an even greater loss in dps b/c someone has to rez my sorry behind. Oh look the person who was rezzing me tried to rez me while I was in aoe…now he’s down too and someone has to rez him…let’s see, that leaves only two persons actually hitting the boss”. Or how about this-same encounter: I’m a Guardian, but I won’t bring “stand your ground” to protect the party against kholer’s pull; no instead I’ll bring consecrations for fire field (either for might or +10%more damage), bane signet for power and either ‘save yourselves’ for fury or a spirit weapon for additional damage. Well I can dodge the pull well enough but the a couple of the party members miss the tell frequently…too bad I have to be rezzing them instead of hitting the boss with my big sword/hammer"

I understand where you are coming from but there is more to mastering the game than those little white numbers floating on screen

Since day 1 of headstart, I’ve taken pictures of characters of various characters that I’ve run into in the major cities. I’ve been compiling these pictures into 1 giant photo album, which will continue to expand and grow.

These are all from the server Tarnished Coast. Some of the armors are awesome, some of the poses work well… some, maybe not so much =D But here they are for your viewing pleasure!

It says a lot about this game that I can take so many pictures and have almost no one who looks identical to another (there are a couple of people who come close, but not quite).

The first 2 pictures are shameless plugs of my own characters, in case you missed it. Couldn’t help it =D

Total damage for the entire team? Sure. Total damage for yourself ONLY? Yes. Total damage for other individuals in your group? Oh hell no. It just invites a type of in game bullying that is neither welcome here nor needed here.

I play trinity games regularly, and consistently play a tank or healer. I refuse to play DPS. With that said, if ANYONE in my group wastes my and the group’s time by kittening and whining about someone’s DPS, I boot them. Simple as that. I have the patience of Buddha when it comes to running with other people, but I will judge you by your own standards. If a player thinks that someone’s DPS being 5% lower than their own is slowing down the run so much that it needs to be addressed, then I will address the fact that their kittenty personality is slowing down the run.

tl;dr- my vote is- for yourself, sure. For others? No.

Engineers still viable outside kits?

1 kit = what areanet wants you to do

This is exactly what I plan to do if I ever run kits… but until they implement the hiding of kit backpacks (which, btw, I’m thrilled anet announced to plan to implement), I can’t bring myself to do it because the backpack looks horrendous with my armor >_>

Engineer's Healing Turret Needs To Be Fixed!

condition removal on a 15-20 second cooldown?

“on demand” ish water field?

purely aesthetic?

My traited healing elixir also gives me condition removed on a 20 second cooldown. It also gives me a heal that is more than twice as large with the exact same cooldown (20 seconds for traited elixir, 20 seconds for turret. 15 if I insta-pickup). It also gives me a 10 second regen compared to my turret’s 3. It also gives me, on top of all of that, another buff.

So, yea… water field with turret vs 2x bigger heal, 3x longer regen, same condition removal and an extra buff. Hard choice there…

You are talking about a traited elixir versus the healing turret.

From the state of the Game I gathered that the main intention for the healing turret change was to open up other builds.
In other words: when you do NOT go for 409 trait, or elixir traits in general, than the healing turret provides almost simular effects without spending traits on it.

Not saying this makes the healing turret better, just saying you shouldn’t compare to traited elixir H, since the goal was to give something to those engineers who didn’t do that…

Ok, then lets look WITHOUT traits:

Elixir H: 5560 heal every 25 seconds, random buff (10 sec regen, swiftness/protection)
Healing Turret + overload: 5040 personal heal every 20 seconds, 8 second regen to nearby allies, two condition removal to nearby allies, 2520 public heal to nearby allies + Water Field for additional healing burst options

If you insta-pickup without taking time to overload, you can knock off 5 seconds from that (putting the heal comparable to the Elixir H since every 30 seconds you would drop a 5200 heal), but lose the condition removal. So definitely overload, since without it you have a subpar heal, subpar regen time, and no buff (but regen IS a buff, isn’t it?).

Fixed some things.
If you want to compare the Toolbelt skills, Toss Elixir H gives you and your team a random boon of Elixir H Every 30s. Regenerating Mist gives you and nearby allies a Double Stack of Regen for 3s + another Water field every 25s

In that case I stand corrected: I did not account for the extra regen tossed on.

I’m still not happy with the heavy handed nerf, but I can accept that the turret is still useful.
