It had been 6 months since I bought my last RNG box off the black lion store. So, I decided, I would give them a try again today. 400 gems for 5 “Rich” chests. The result? I got a bunch of candy. Waste of 5 bucks.

Last time I do that. It’s just that simple.

GW2 lottery boxes are, for the vast majority of users, simply unrewarding and not worth the money. Direct purchase skins, however, I will happily continue to buy from now on!

Actually, if someone boots you at 15% of the final boss like that, I have heard it’s a bannable offense. It’s one thing to boot someone early or midway cause they are sucking- it’s another to use them to get the boss to near dead and then remove them from group purely for the purpose of denying them loot.

I agree that reporting should allow more information. The current system looks only half done and I keep expecting them to implement the other half any day now.

Maybe email the support team and report the user that way.

I will say this- a month or two ago Colin Johnson posted saying that he was aware of the backpiece issue with Engineers and that, while it isn’t a huge priority, it is now on their radar and something they will look into fixing.

I really REALLY hope part of that solution involves letting us hide the hobosacks. I really, really do.

Does Anet play the game

Tolmos.8395

I know that I play on Live, but usually only a few hours per week. (What with work and all.) I also don’t always represent the Arena.net guild, since it’s nice to just play sometimes. And, no, our game accounts aren’t the same as GM accounts; we don’t get special items or anything like that.

IMHO, I really think playing should be a paid part of your job. I understand, as a programmer, how time consuming that work can be… but considering the type of software and changes you are making, you should have at least 5-10 hours a week of personal experience using whatever feature you are in charge of fiddling with. Yea, it would slow down production having each member lose 10 hours of work time for 10 hours of paid “play” time, but I really REALLY think it would put Anet’s development and support so far ahead of other games that it would become news worthy.

Immortal Tyrians... ele, ranger, thief, engi

All statistics stated have been researched and tested. Now, I know most of you guys never fought a good engi, a couple of you have fought a good ele, quite a few must have fought a good ranger, and all of you have fought an annoying thief. Well, here are the numbers me and my friends found when testing the healing and condition removal of these classes (keep in mind that we didn’t include skills that remove all conditions for it’s effect but assumed that it only removes 1 condition). With the engi we healed for about 55k health and have the ability to remove at least 20 conditions at the time, all in 1 minute. On the ele, we are able to heal around 60k health and remove at least 14 conditions at the same time, all in 1 minute. On the ranger… we were able to heal about 50k health and remove
at least 34 conditions. Now, ha ha ho, the thief…moment of silence…heals for 65k and removes 25 conditions. These thieves also have to ability to permanently stealth as they please. If they feel that they want to stealth for three minutes straight (no reveal)… they can start at any given time. Know that we didn’t include any elite skills and we only need at least 1 utility slot to achieve these healing capabilities on each class. Also, (besides the thief, though they can do this if they want to) the classes have approximately 3000 toughness and still enough damage to kill a bunker guardian, not completely useless. We might make a video to show this to forums. We also survived against three people in a three vs. one with all four character before (though we had to flak of course. The thief just killed them all one by one however). Anyway, what do you think guys? Gw2 went a little overboard on the whole “healing” idea. At least we have phantasm Mesmers to explode 20k damage in four seconds just to keep these guys in check, right?
Again what do you think about this awesome game where you don’t really die? I hated how you actually died in most MMOS. Don’t you like the whole immortal effect?

Build Makers- Sword/Board + longbow?

in Warrior

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

Alright, so I recently hit 80 on my warrior alt and have been looking into a build. Before I get much farther, there is a particular requirement for the build:

-> It must incorporate sword/board and longbow. I got the 8 bit skins for those 3 weapons and intend to put them to use! They are why he was leveled to 80 to begin with =D

So, that said… I’m at a loss! I’m guessing a zerker build would be wasted on a sword/board warrior?

Anyhow, what I am looking for is…

  • PvE Build, primarily for open world but I’d like something that can contribute to dungeon groups, if possible. I have NO intention of taking this character in PvP of any kind
  • I have nearly 800 hours /played on this account. I feel confident in my ability to dodge. If you have a build that is squishy, yet destructive, and would be viable with my weapon set- bring it on!
  • I am quite confident in my ability to kite, as well. Again- if you have a build that relies on kiting for bigger bosses with my longbow, I’m cool with that as well.
  • I like tanky builds. I played tanks in MMOs for years, so if you have a build that is massively reliant on toughness to pull mob “agro” my way and save those I run with, I’m all for that too
  • Make sure to include info about what weapon sigils to take!

I played with a zerker build on Isle of the mists and it did alright, but I’m not sure it wouldn’t be a complete waste since I’m running only a 1 hander for damage and then a shield. :-\

Let me know what you guys think! Thanks in advance =D

Silly reasons you won't play a race or class?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tolmos.8395

I play human because I always play human. I can’t relate to any other race, so I can’t bring myself to play them. When I make my character, my first thought is always "What would I do in this world? How would I turn out? ". The answer is rarely “as a steampunk obsessed cat”. =D

I don’t play entire games because of the running animations. Take Rift- male humans (eth and mathosians are what they are called) look like they are power jogging in the most silly way imaginable. I can’t help but chuckle when I see my main in that game run compared to say GW2 or Aion (which both have the best human running animations I’ve seen in an MMO)

Why are people strongly against raids?

I
So why are people against raids?
They don’t want GW2 to turn into another WoW clone?

The only thing raid related I am against is a raid mechanic that revolves around the best gear/rewards coming only from raids. I’ve been a raider for a long time, and I’ve always been appalled by my fellow raiders believing that they, and they alone, deserve all the best rewards because of the “hard work” we put into it (maybe I was the only one enjoying the raids, cause I never looked at it as “hard work”…)

If a game could implement raids with the exact same rewards as those found outside of raids, minus say achievements or titles, then I would agree entirely with raids being introduced.

tl;dr- many MANY raiders have a sense of entitlement that is simply out of control. I, at least, don’t want to introduce that to this game.

GW1 vs GW2: Pros and Cons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Another aspect of GW1 was the fact that all the classes were balanced nicely. Classes weren’t being smacked with the nerf hammer every few weeks, or even months

This is the point where I realized you were talking about a different game than Arenanet’s Guild Wars 1. >_>

I played GW1 from the day it released until 2 months before GW2 released, and then started GW2 at the first day of headstart. I can say that, so far, the nerfbat has been extremely lax in comparison.

There are a lot of things that GW1 destroys this game in, but when it comes to that GW1 loses hands down. Every month I had to redo my ele build and at least the builds of 1 or 2 of my heroes because of hardcore nerfs to skills.

Especially the Seering Flames nerf. God, that was the worst…

Catering to Casuals is Ruining GW2

Tolmos.8395

Tired of hearing these casual vs hardcore debates.

Casuals make up a majority of the player base, buy the fluff on the gem store, and pay for the bulk of new updates.

Hardcores push the content, force developers to make and develope new content, and are more proactive in identifying game issues.

A successful game needs both sets of players.

This has been going on in every MMO since MMOs released. Not a single one is unique in being able to avoid the debate.

It’s basically just a bunch of little kids all demanding that their group is superior and thus deserves the most attention. Because sharing is overrated, right?

I do agree with this. I wish movement speed remained the same in combat. Games do this so we can’t just run away from NPCs, and so NPCs don’t have to resort to rooting tactics to stop us from running… but it can be quite aggravating. I would rather the NPCs just move at 120% movement speed and us stay at our regular speed, than have them slow us down.

I’m quite happy with the amount of updates in GW2, but I wish more of it was permanent.

We’ve been playing around so far this year with a lot of different concepts to see what works for a living world game, and see what players liked and didn’t like. Based on all of your feedback, you’ll be seeing a greater degree of permanent content built into future living world releases in 2013. And of course, some things you’ve seen before may return again, in its current form but updated like SAB or holiday festivals, or in a new form entirely….

You DO remember that in Guild Wars 1 you had to be in a city/outpost to change your skills and reallocate your trait points? It was a far more restricted system than in Guild Wars 2

Disagree. ANY town allowed you to change not only your skills, but your trait spec as well. In this game, I can change my skills anywhere, but depending on my location I could end up traveling halfway across the world to change my trait spec. I can’t just run to beetletun and switch out my traits.

Pretty funny post honestly, Little bit of boasting and flexing… haha. As long as it makes you feel like a boss though.

On point though, post this answer in many threads but this game does seem to be trending towards casual, giddy content that is more for the family, than the “core” gamer. Maybe soon, this game can be a personalized version of Sims. Cosmetics, homes, susie homemaker.

How do you define casual content? What do you consider a challenge?

I agree that much of the living story has been “meh” at best, although the dungeon at the end of flame and frost was cool.

My personal view is that ANet is trying to mix it up. You get some challenging content such as the Halloween jumping puzzles. You get dungeons like the flame and frost thing and the super adventure dohicky. They also throw in a lot of diversion stuff like crab toss.

The idea is to make the game generally entertaining.

I consider casual content such as this; Content that can be easily completed with any level character without any prerequisites. For example, Southsun Cove is casual through and through. Arah Explorable has to planned more thoroughly (Unless you’re a boss like OP, then you just “slam” through it… I guess.)

True Endgame content that is tailored for level 80s that requires steps to complete is not casual. You have to put effort in to be rewarded. Granted, Dungeon rewards are weak, but the idea behind planning, and having pre-requisites is what I like to do.
Some people complain that content such as that is grinding, but I disagree. It’s for the players who want challenging, rewarding content. Underworld and Domain of Anguish in GW1 were examples of this. You didn’t casualy beat those areas (Again, if your like the OP, and just “bossed” through it, then it doesnt matter what you play, cause your a game god and just need SUPLEX MODE 5000 just to get a challenge. You versus 5000 hordes of zombies with just a wooden plank.)

Er… I disagree with this. I usually scoff at the whole “You should EARN your in game rewards” arguments, with the mental image of fat guy from southpark’s WoW episode behind the keyboard. That said, the game wouldn’t be fun if nothing required any effort.

Ever played a really awesome game and then used a cheat code for it? If not, then be happy because that can RUIN game. Suddenly achieving everything without putting forth even the smallest amount of effort pretty much ends the game before it starts. Most games aren’t meant to be work, but they are meant to be challenging. That isn’t a blanket statement that applies to ALL games, but it does hold true for most.

Not to mention that there’s absolutely nothing wrong for a gaming company to cater both to hardcores and casuals. In fact, it would be a lot of a better business plan than what they have now. Having both markets play your game is better than only having one of them…

Thats the big question. Is it really better when 50% of your developer ressources are spent for maybe 5% of the playerbase .. and 50% for the other 95% .. or are these 95% kitten ed of maybe after a while because it would be so much better if they get 100% and also a chance to get some nice shinies that normally only these 5% have.

Well, when WoW started catering to the casuals, they started losing players. And by losing players, I don’t mean ‘lol, 5% left, cry babies’, no, their sales went down all across the board. So, actually, yes.

To be fair, WoW is a horrible example since they also started catering to casuals at the same time the MMO market boomed with games that have graphics so amazing in comparison that it makes WoW look like something from the 90s…

They lost players for a LOT more reasons than that. The 5% left for that reason… the other who knows how many people left because WoW is a dinosaur that has failed to keep up with the genre.

I think ANet is trying to make content that appeals to the elite. They did in GW1, they’re trying to do so here. Look at FotM, the AC revamp, rewrites of mob mechanics for the Krait and the Risen, scaling revamp in Orr events. Most of these changes have produced backlash from players claiming the changes made that aspect of the game “too hard.” Yet, these changes have not floated the boats of those asking for challenge. Why?

The problems are:

  • the combat mechanics make even 1-hit kills irrelevant to someone who can dodge/block/reflect them every time — and anything greater than a 1-hit kill is by definition also irrelevant
  • pressure damage (conditions applied constantly, AoE proliferation and ubiquity — often to the point of nowhere to move to, lots of little hits that add up) has to be forgiving enough to allow for success given good play; since this tactic can be overcome, it will be. Once it is overcome repeating that success is not hard
  • open-world content difficulty is susceptible to being outnumbered, despite scaling (e.g., on FC the temple events are not being done; on SoS, they are (or were two nights ago) well attended — the other night while guesting I saw 4 of 5 god statues inactive)

While I’ve seen quite a few requests for more challenge, I seldom see any of those posters offering concrete suggestions as to how to provide it. Now, there’s a challenge, work towards a solution.

My solution to cater more to the “elite”:

Reduce NPC damage so that it takes 2-3 hits to kill a player instead of 1.
Increase # of Dodge times per endurance bar to 3 or even 4.
Increase NPC attack rate by 300% or more.

Instead of a slow “I hit you, you hit me” combat system where 1 hit = death and you can only dodge twice, make it a fast paced combat system.

Yes, they do add in more updates than any other MMO. However, the amount they keep adding in seems to be shrinking and shrinking and there hasn’t been any content to really keep some players actually playing and not just for the 2 hours that they need to play for to get achievements.

But yes. They do add in a lot of updates.

On the upside, if we’re lucky that means they finally moved one of their new content devs over to the bug fixing team and we’ll start to see some of these bugs that have existed since beta knocked out…

I don’t mind having people being better then me, but the game is too easy in general. Normal quests just feels like hack-n-slash mostly. And waypoints everywhere which doesn’t require you to plan your route or anything and kind of takes away the adventurous feeling.

I agree with this. Though it’s really tough to be able to get it right. Most of my friends don’t game a lot, or just kinda stink at it, so for them this game is challenging. For me, it’s pretty much a cakewalk since I play games a pretty solid amount and am used to the ridiculously hard content of other games. But if they geared all the content around someone like me, the game would probably flop since folks who don’t game 20+ hours a week and/or have a lot of overall gaming time under their belt would start dropping out like flies in frustration.

tl;dr- I understand WHY it is as easy as it is, but I do have the guilty wish that it was tougher.

Why there should be a dps meter

Tolmos.8395

I should have mentioned that I see that being a tall enough order that, considering Anet’s current success rate at implementing new features in a timely manner, wouldn’t be seen for a long time.

So, that said, if they had a meter for literally every aspect of combat, I would agree with a DPS meter along with them.

I agree that it would take a long time to develop this way. However, they already have a system in place in PvP that tracks how much damage you take and from what sources, so there is a starting point at least. I think it is something they can expand on and that it would honestly help the playerbase overall.

Yea, I can agree with that. If you can measure the entirety of what someone is doing in combat, it would help them in the long run.

I suppose I was a little jaded because in previous games it ONLY consisted of a DPS meter. As a tank, nothing irked me more than some little crapeater stopping the group mid run to kitten about another player producing 5-10% less DPS than him. I usually just boot the crapeater and find a replacement for them, since the amount of time that lower DPS player would have cost us would have been only a fraction of the time this guy was costing us.

Depending on the circumstances, I don’t play well with other “elitists” >_> lol

Sooo many players just wishing GW2 to be “Hey, a swung a sword. I swung a word again”
Oh, I didn’t realize it was just the AIR.

Some people want to be good at what do they do, including gaming, some people just want to have fun with their friends and some people just want to be carried through the content by other people.
God forbid someone notices they are slacking. The END OF DAYS! Kill all ELITISTS!

I do not see any other reason for not wanting stats in game, but being afraid to get caught slacking.
By stats I mean DPS, tanking, healing uptime.

People don’t want the meter because of all the things the DPS meter CAN’T read. Like buffs, fields, condition removals, etc.

DPS meters create bad players in games like this. In this situation, you aren’t arguing just with casuals who don’t want to see the game ruined by elitism- you are arguing with those of us “elitists” who don’t want the game ruined by stupid people who try to bully good players into playing stupidly, like them, so their little number will go up.

Want a meter? Get a stop watch and time your run through the dungeon. That is the best possible measurement of EVERYTHING in your group, and gives you something to work towards bettering.

The OP has stated several times that he doesn’t just mean for the meter to record DPS. He thinks it would be great if it could count how many rezzes, condition removals, combos, etc. that any player does.

I should have mentioned that I see that being a tall enough order that, considering Anet’s current success rate at implementing new features in a timely manner, wouldn’t be seen for a long time.

“casual” does not mean “amateur”. Nothing in this game needs to be made easier, things need to be made harder. If you are finding things in this game too hard or challenging, you need more practice and need to improve more.

I can’t express how much I agree with this. Casual means lack of time, not lack of skill. Some of us have been MMOing for a LONG time, and could give a hardcore player a run for their money when it comes to gameplay skill.

I understand that the difficulty can be difficult for some people, but I would prefer that group not identify itself as all Casuals, since they may be only a small portion of them, and may even include hardcores.

I would be willing to bet high stakes that this game is also bringing in more money than a game with subs.

This particular pricing model is just ingenious. I don’t agree with the lottery boxes, at all, but I do agree that it is a smart way to increase the bottom line!

Tbh I don’t think it’s a secret that f2p is more profitable then P2P, and B2P (GW2 for example) is also potentially more profitable.

I really do hope B2P becomes the standard, it’s the best middle ground I feel.

I remember when GW1 first came out. It was the first major B2P (that I know of at least) and no one in the gaming press thought the model would be sustainable.

Oh how wrong they were.

They weren’t entirely wrong, though they mostly were. The model was it was when it first came out wasn’t sustainable for very long. Back then, the idea of an MMO running a decade+ wasn’t really something anyone considered, so for GW1 the idea was just to push out a new xpac every year. But then Anet quit focusing on GW1, quit putting out xpacs, and the money quit flowing as freely…

Then came the in game store. THAT became the sustainable model.

GW2 learned well from its predecessor and will probably be far more profitable because of it.

As much as I despise the idea- they really shouldn’t bring DPS meters without adding Trinity to the game. I can’t see them having one without the other. At least then it would create the understanding that not every class or build needs big numbers to contribute.

I would be willing to bet high stakes that this game is also bringing in more money than a game with subs.

This particular pricing model is just ingenious. I don’t agree with the lottery boxes, at all, but I do agree that it is a smart way to increase the bottom line!

Why there should be a dps meter

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tolmos.8395

Yeah, that’s great and all. But it is very much so in PvE. There are no encounters that even encourage players to going support. The way that they currently have things set up, there isn’t a point in going anything but DPS. Which is why I said exactly what I said.

It doesn’t matter if players have encouragement to go support or not- some don’t have a choice. Take Engineer. Besides grenades, they don’t even have a second pure DPS build. That means every engineer forever would always need to go grenade, or get heckled out of dungeons by noobs who think everything comes down to how big of a number is on the DPS meter.

Not sure I’d enjoy that, myself.

Yes, Chris Whiteside did say that. It’s too bad it seems to have fallen by the wayside. =(

Though, I’d rather have it here on the forums, than on Reddit.

Agreen. I know reddit is exceptionally popular but I’ve never been a fan of its overall layout. I find it very unpleasant to look at.

I wish these skins were for armor. Pity best hat my Asuran has worn so far is town clothes only lol.

It’s a shame the concept of town only clothes exists at all… I would love to have glasses on my characters.

Engineer backpack changed then went back

I was walking around and noticed that my backpack looked different. It looked great, the top was flat and rounded with only a bag showing out the top on one side and had an emblem, (not sure which one it is as I’m new, but it wasn’t a guild one as I am not in a guild).

It really looked nice and then I looked at a new shield and the backpack was gone! I did a search, but found nothing that looked like this backpack. Am I missing something simple or was it a glitch? (They did do a patch with 30 minutes of me seeing the change, but it was gone before the patch).

Let this be a lesson to you: every time you run across anything different or new, take a screenshot. Could be a really neat graphical glitch that no one has ever seen and that you’ll never see again.

Engineer turrets build video (duels)

Pretty cool video man! Made me want to go mess around with turrets today for fun.

Turrets are amazing in PvP. I’ve been running them since headstart and I can count the number of 1v1 matches I’ve lost since then, on my Engie, on my hands out of the 100+ encounters I’ve had. I attribute that entirely to the fact that most people overlook turrets, thinking it’s a crap build. Even after they die they don’t realize it’s the turrets that made the fight.

One day turrets will be recognized in PvP and we’ll see a lot more of them out there. Until then, I’ll enjoy my semi-unique Godhood =D

EXCEPT for Arenanet, who could lock everyone into whatever armor they are wearing at the start of the dungeon. But the rage and tears that would result from that would cause blood to leak from the header of these forums…

Maybe because sometimes people want/need to change armors for specific encounters, which is a pretty viable tactic.

What you’re essentially saying is “Well, I don’t want inspect. But I have an idea here: instead of inspect, let’s just completely destroy a pretty important game mechanic, just because I don’t want inspect.”

I think he was just saying that the only way to 100% guarantee someone stays in the gear they used to get into the dungeon is to lock equipment once the dungeon has started. I cannot say if he really thinks this is a good idea, but I do agree it is the only 100% guaranteed way to prevent people from getting around inspect/ping checks.

You are correct. And no, I don’t think it’s a good idea. I was just adding that in there because I didn’t want to make the blanket statement of “This is impossible to stop”, when it wasn’t. If the problem really did get out of hand and folks demanded a fix for it, Arenanet could do something about it. Doesn’t mean I’d like the idea.

As for getting around inspect. I have a full set of Zerker gear, I equip that and get in the group. Once I am in I change my gear to the MF gear and then turn off inspect. Now you can check and see I am blocking you now and either auto kick me, or ask hey can you unblock so I can check again. I say sure, then quickly equip my Zerker gear and allow you to inspect me again.

That is one of those unfortunate situations of “if someone wants to do something bad enough, they will”. It’s like a home with an alarm in it- sure, the alarm is a great deterrent, but someone who just wants to smash their way in and grab your TV before the 30 second timer ends to set off the alarm could very well do so. You can make it harder for them, but actually stopping that is impossible.

Hobo Sacks: A Terrible Fashion Statement

in Engineer

Posted by: Tolmos.8395

Tolmos.8395

I agree: hobosacks kinda fit with the whole “rugged adventurer” look that SOME Charr or Human Engineers have going on. Sylvari, whose clothes are made of plants? Asura, with their Tron lines and random hovering baubles? Norn, with their ornate knotwork?

DO NOT WANT HOBOSACKS. There has to be some way of getting rid of the hobosacks, ANet, please. I love using kits (carpal tunnel aside, the ‘nade kit IS a lot of fun) but I hate having to watch my character’s painstakingly chosen look get completely ruined by a Big, Stained Sack of Blobiness +1 whenever I take out my medkit or my ’nades or my flamer.

If people have trouble figuring out what kit an Engi is using, then they are utter kittens. Is a gout of flame rushing through their blob? Flamethrower. Are small explosions turning their zerg into an impromptu fireworks display? Grenades. Are bubbles of strangely-colored liquids splashing everywhere? Elixir Gun. Are barrels appearing from nowhere and exploding with the force of a speeding nerfbat? Bombs. The skill animations for each kit are distinctive enough that there is really no purpose to having the hobosacks in order to “tell what kit the engineer is using.” Honestly, since all hobosacks look mostly the same, it doesn’t even help!

TL;DR – Hobosacks need to go, people need to learn what engi skills look like if that’s the complaint.

Heh, yea… the argument of “we need to see the backpacks to know what they are using!” always made me chuckle. All I could imagine was some warrior watching an engineer running around setting everything on fire with huge waves of flames going “Duuurrr…. is that a ‘nade kit? What’s the backpack look like… OH! I must be the flamethrower! I know how to beat you, now! HAHAHA” =D

I do wish Anet wouldn’t be so selective in what they nerf, though. It seems like all the open world farming spots are getting hit, but CoF is still going strong…

Could be wrong, though. Just seems that way from here.
