It was a shallow attempt to insult people that hold certain opinions.

Or a simple observation that a particular type of player has begun to surface in GW2… the type of player that WoW’s community is known to be infested with.

A simple observation made with an entirely snarky tone.

So… not a “simple observation”.

So, wait.. being snarky immediately makes it a “complex observation”? Bah, semantics!

PVT is useless in open world and deserves a kick in dungeons/fractals.

anyone that uses pvt in a dungeon/fractals absolutely deserves a kick, using pvt would slow down the group and waste peoples time, nobody cares if your running around open world in full pvt though

Ahh… so the WoW crowd really has made it to GW2. Good to know.

My only complaint about the full zerker expectation is that it limits my playstyle options as an engineer, if I needed to do that. Going dual pistol, full zerker, would be a bigger hindrance than going full rampager with dual pistol. To go full zerker, I would almost HAVE to run grenades, which I am not a fan of. :-\

Honestly, it’s absolutely not hard to find a non-zerker dungeon group. You’re complaining about being looked down upon by Zerkers but that’s, what? On the forums? In the occasional PUG?

Honestly, I hear about it but have never seen it myself. Almost all of my groups are glad I run as much toughness as I do. I’ve gotten pretty good at aiming NPCs away from the groups, so my groups very VERY rarely have even 1 death in them, and usually that’s just in groups where we 3 man the dungeons because we can’t find a full 5.

But not once have I had someone tell me “drop the toughness and run zerker” in any of my groups.

I’m honestly surprised that the wiki page for aggro states that damage is so high on the aggro table, higher even than toughness. I have NEVER had a zerker or anyone else pull aggro off of my engineer or guardian, both of whom are running ~2k toughness (well, engie is at ~1800) for that exact reason, and certainly not doing top damage.

I’ve been successfully “tanking” in this game since it released based entirely on my character’s toughness. I’m not sure what they are basing their information on the wiki page upon, but it has not been even remotely reflected in my personal (1,000+ hour) experience in this game.

People need to stop with the I had to rez zerker comment.

First of all, they have all the agro, so of course they die easier. Second of all, if you are in zerker too most trash and easier boss will die fast enough that the zerker won’t die.

Agro in Guild Wars 2 is not based on damage done. If anything, the zerker should have none of the agro. So if you run zerker and die in a dungeon, you are doing something wrong.

Use real cash ,buy exp boost and gems.Use gems to buy crafting item.Insta craft yourself to lvl80.That is what crafting do.

Exp boosts doesn’t increase your experience gain via anything but killings enemies.

Was going to post this myself, but since you beat me to it I’ll just confirm this info. Exp boosts are only for monster kills. They do not affect events, hearts, or crafting xp.

Nightmare Wallet for Alt-players Gold

As an alt-o-holic I have to say… I love the account wallet, especially for gold. In fact, it was what I was most happy about. I have 3 80s atm, and working on my 4th (who is almost 50). My remaining 4 character slots (yes, I bought more) are in the 40s, since I’m planning to take all the rest of my slots to 80 en masse, and all at once.

The one thing I despised was needing to buy something for one alt, and then remembering “Wait… I think alt #6 had 2 gold on him! Let’s go check!” and finding out that nope, wasn’t #6… maybe it was 5? Oh wait, possibly 7. Dang, guess it was 8.

I no longer have to do that. All of my gold is now crammed into 1 spot, which makes my life 1,000x easier. If they went back to the old system, I’d probably rage lol

Just curious. >_>

Frankly, I don’t know how to better state it, so I will attempt it once more. If you can watch the dev livestream for the current content and not understand that it is an extended platformer, you are unfamiliar with gaming genre. That’s it, pure and simple. Living story content should not be defined by a niche element which some players will love and some will hate. This is an MMO with a diverse player base. You want the core game to appeal across that wide diversity and the living story to be told in the broadest possible way. This should be straightforward stuff for any experienced gamer.

Sure there is platforming in the current update, but your original claim was that voting was “gated”, which is completely absurd. You don’t even have to hit the space bar to JUMP ONCE, to get to the voting! You don’t have to enter any instanced mini game or do anything that any player with enough skill to aim a simple AOE can’t accomplish.

You might as well claim that everything in Lion’s Arch is gated content because you have to figure out how to aim your character into walking toward an asura gate to get there. You’re essentially saying that something is gated from people who cannot perform the most rudimentary function of character control and pushing a key to activate an AOE, and if that is the case for some players, then they have bigger issues because the rest of the game is basically unplayable to them.

Now, we are getting somewhere, excellent! So, there is platforming in the current update. Very good at recognizing your gaming genre. Here’s the problem. I don’t like platforming, so I chose to avoid the current content—as I have the jumping puzzles. My argument has nothing to do with how easy or hard the platformer is; I simply don’t enjoy platformers. That’s the gating that I’m speaking about. It’s gated content for me if it is, well, gated behind a platformer. I dutifully watched the dev livestream, saw that it was an extended platformer, and chose to skip the content.

That happens. With a game this diverse, there will be content patches that simply don’t appeal to some people. Take FotM- it didn’t appeal to me in any way, shape or form, so I chose to skip it. Doesn’t make it worthless to the population as a whole, but it did to me and thus I overlooked that patch and content. On the other hand, I love the platforming aspects of the game, so patches that make use of it will get my full attention.

Its’ pretty much working as intended, I’d say.

and you think you have technical knowledge? lol you don’t sound like that ‘’some some some some might maybe might some stuff like that’’ lol. that is not an answer.

as a player I seek stability. If a class have that without problem I should too. That is that simple.

While I have a point in this conversation which is seeking equal stablitiy on how skills responds on other classes, you are here just to call me angry kid..

you will be now ignored forever by me so don’t even bother spamming another answer if it is not related to fix of this situation. just don’t post your useless ‘’ some is like this and some is like that and sometimes that might be some some’’ based stuff to call people kid on this thread.

So ignoring others makes you more grown up? Yes, I have some technical knowledge in programming that goes back to around 10 years of experience and I believe to understand how some faults might happen.

That said I did not reverse engineer GW2 to track back such faults. Neither do I have the time noir the knowdlege to do so (which requires further time to get into it). But taking that aside I ’ll try to provide you with a basic example as to how different skills could look like and why some happen to work different then others.

The following examples aren ’t written in a specific syntax / language and don ’t actually work like this (they are actually simplified for a better understanding not written in a C / C++ style syntax like GW2 is probably using).

Example code:

function use_rocket_boots() {
	// This disables you to move in another direction while this skill is active
	freeze_movement();

	// This is where the skill-animation will actuall be triggered - super simplified
	do_some_skill_specific_things_like_jumping();

	// When the player position in the client (= your PC) is not were the server expected it to be
	if(get_client_position() != get_server_position())  {
		//wait until you are where the server expects you to be
		wait_until_synced();
	} else {

	//you will only be unfreezed if the server says its ok to unfreeze you
	unfreeze_movement();
   }
}

function use_whirlwind() {
	// This disables you to move in another direction while this skill is active
	freeze_movement();

	// This is where the skill-animation will actuall be triggered - super simplified
	do_some_skill_specific_things_like_throwing_kittens_arround();

	//you will actually be unfreezed withouth any checks after everything has been done
	unfreeze_movement();
}

The above example of use_rocket_boots shows how a unclever positioned check could actually prevent you from moving waiting for the server to repond before you ’re able to do anything at all (=~1s stuck).

use_whirlwind doesn’t wait for the server here but just does it purporse and lets you continue what you are doing withouth any delay. It ‘s optimized for speed. The actual checks do happen in other functions and don’t require the server and/or are much more performances wise optimized and implement caching or something simliar.

As a professional software engineer, I have to say that this might very well be the silliest post I have ever seen.

Wrong, this from someone who has been playing WvW from the start

So just because you have played WvW from the start you have better information than ArenaNet themselves about increase of WvW activity?

Could you please link an Anet response stating that

A) WvW activity is increasing
B) Player population is growing, not shrinking?

Because so far, it’s not a question of his information vs Anet’s information, but rather his information vs some other random forum viewer’s information.

this has been debated since release and I have yet to ever see a clear answer, Anet employees have been quoted confirming both theories, which are contradictory.

After searching, I cannot find a single instance of an Anet employee confirming the other theory. All I have found are people ignoring the Anet responses.

Here is a clear response stating that the server populations are based on the number of players who call that server home. There are no Anet responses out which contradict this by stating it is based on how many are logged in:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Server-Populations/first#post703192

EDIT: I challenge anyone who states that there is an Anet response contradicting it to post that response, otherwise it can only be assumed that it’s a non-truthful statement. “Its there, I just can’t find it right now. Google it!” is not an acceptable cop-out

So… Has the game gotten any better? It was pretty bad when I left. Way too casual and unrewarding. How’s the playerbase? I haven’t played since about 2-3 months out of release.

If by “casual and unrewarding” you mean “Not like WoW, lacking in raids and not based on vertical gear progression”, then the answer is that the game is still GW2 and has not become WoW yet. Sorry.

As for the playerbase- larger servers are pretty packed. I haven’t seem what the smaller ones look like but Tarnished Coast has a lot of zones that still push me into overflow.

Working towards better gear is a solid incentive for a player to keep wanting to play a game. It’s a big part of what made WoW, WoW. Not trying to make this a GW VS WoW discussion, but wanted to point that out.

To me GW2 was trying to sell an experience, which although beautiful, does not create enough interest for extremely competitive-minded players like me. Honestly when I played GW2, I got the same feeling I got when I play single player RPGs. I don’t know how to explain it, but I guess I liked the feeling of working towards being recognized for my efforts.

You can still do that. Become well known for being more skilled, as opposed to the usual MMO view of being well known for being better geared. For once, you have an opportunity to shine not because of how much free time you have, but because of how good of a player you, personally, are.

There are many players on individual class forums who post videos semi-regularly, or who are well known on their server for doing amazing feats. And they accomplish those feats without the help of bigger numbers, making them actually someone worth being recognized.

Of all the MMOs out there, this is, to me, the best game to try to achieve recognition on.

I can’t find it right now, but there was a line, maybe from the Manifesto?, where they said grinding for purely cosmetic items is OK..

f someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game.

Makes sense to me

Yea, I agree with the mentality. I never plan to get a legendary, but I’m glad they exist for those who want something to work towards. I think they should put out more Legendaries, though. Just 1 of each weapon kinda sucks, especially when some of those weapons I wouldn’t even buy if they were cheap exotics…

Hobo Sacks: A Terrible Fashion Statement

Some pretty interesting ideas here. I was actually spit-balling some ideas on how to address this today. This has always been something that has bothered me, too.

For example:

  • Have kits respect the existing back item flag. If you have a back item and you want to show it, hide the kit. If you don’t have a back item or choose to hide it, always show the kit. Obviously this makes it a little harder than usual to tell what kit you are using, so:
    • A nameplate icon similar to Elemental Attunements would be a good addition (I may add this regardless if we can get the art )
    • Move the kit somewhere else on your body. I know, crazy right? For example, who doesn’t like a sweet fanny-pack?

Hopefully this finally gets resolved soon, and I’ll do what I can to see that happen. Keep in mind, as Colin mentioned before, that there are some pretty beefy projects going on that are consuming our engineering time. But that doesn’t exactly mean we can’t sneak stuff in here and there .

-Bill

Holy crap… a game dev has used some of my suggestions =D

I would happily run a big icon next to my nameplate saying what kit I’m using, or an obvious buff or something like that. ANYTHING that would allow me to hide this ugly hobosack on my back when I try to run kits. I would play kits in a heartbeat if not for that…

I would love if that would be true, but I think Anet is still traumatized from trying to balance GW1. They probably have involuntary twitches that trigger when you say the words “55 build”. Their kneejerk reaction was limit GW2 players to 10-14 total skills max, so it will take a while and a lot of therapy to get them to the point that they are willing to expand beyond that .

I wouldn’t take this post too seriously, folks. This line pretty much betrays the true intention of the post-

With 45 min of game per day, I have the same stuff, the same skin, the same advantage than a player who play 8 hours per day.

Translated: “QQ casuals get the same rewards as hardcores. I’ll pretend to be the most kitten casual you have ever seen and make the most ridiculously innaccurate claim I get (mostly to rile up players looking for a reason to be angry, regardless of the accuracy of my claims) to get the point across that this should be changed!”.

We see casuals do it all the time to hardcores, I suppose it’s only fair that the other way around happens as well.

Still, it’s a good system, I suppose. It’s not like I get nothing for it- I get rewarded for my money. And on top of that, it creates something of a techno-socialism. I pay more because I can, and that in turn allows people who can’t pay anything to not have to. It opens the MMO up to many people who don’t have the ability to pay a subscription, and I like that.

condition stacking

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dynamically set the cap of stacks based on how many individual users are attacking the NPC. Don’t let 2 people drop more than 25 stacks, but don’t let 50 people get stuck at 25 stacks.

If that still isn’t enough, prioritize stacks by who is doing more damage. If my stack would do more damage than bob the warrior, give my stack priority. Why? Because it likely means I am condition build and he isn’t, and his stack is just being dropped as an afterthought by skull cracking skill he just used on his hammer.

For the sake of me actually getting credit in the monster kill, I need that stack on the mob more than him.

Since the FULL status is based on how many accounts call the server home, not how many are logged in, the time of day is irrelevant. What you want to keep an eye out for is people transferring off of the server and/or Anet expanding the maximum load that the server can hold. The former happens fairly regularly and the latter seems to happen more often than you would think. Especially for a high profile server like TC.

Early server stacking involved coordinated logouts of entire alliances to make room for guilds on servers that were otherwise full. Unless something changed, how full a server is, is dependent only on current number online.

I’m guessing it changed, because several Anet employees have stated that the server status is based on the number of people who call the server home

I believe server pops are based on the amount of accounts having it as home server, not the currently logged in population. So no need to refresh.

I don’t think that’s entirely true…

It’s already been confirmed multiple times by Anet employees. There is currently no way to see how many players are actively logged into the server at this exact moment, only how many people call the server home.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think the problem is that you shouldn’t play the game rewards, you should play it for the fun of playing it.

I frequently find that if I focus on the reward I don’t enjoy myself very much. If I decide to grind out COF, or I play the TP, or I just try do my daily / monthly then I’m quickly bored and frustrated.

On the other hand, if I log in and decide what I want to do for fun and do that, I have a much better play experience. For example, sometimes I want to try a new jumping puzzle, so I pick one I haven’t done and go do it. Although there is a chest at the end, nobody is going to spend however long (15 minutes or so the first time) for a support token, 2 blues, and a green.

Other times I feel like running around in WvW, so I do that. Sometimes I want to run a dungeon. About once every couple of months I get it into my head to do a fractal (which always reminds me why I don’t do fractals).

Sometimes I feel like working toward map completion. (this is usually when I just want to waste a little time).

At almost no point am I doing any of it for the rewards it provides.

Sometimes I don’t really want to do anything at all. In which case I don’t log in, or I log in, realize nothing appeals to me, and log out.

you are the reason that makes me wanne quit the game. this is by far the most casual post i’ve ever readed in my entire life.

Why? Because games are supposed to be about the rewards? When’s the last time you played a board game where you played for the loot? You play monopoly for the fake paper money? No, you play because you like it. It feels good to beat your friends because you had better luck or better skill. The cash and tiles are a means to an end. They mean nothing in the grand scheme because if you didn’t enjoy playing in the first place, you simply wouldn’t do it.

How about sports; those are still games. You go out and play a game of basketball with some buddies. What loot do you get from that? Nothing. Zero, zilch, nada. No shinies. Just the enjoyment of hanging out and competing with your buds.

Games are about enjoyment, not greed. Sadly MMOs have taught us to be greedy, to expect the shinies, rather than to play the game for enjoyment.

Couldn’t have said it any better. A Game can’t be a replacement for your job, where you get your rewards for doing good. Go get a job and you have your rewards. I want a game to have fun and chill out, not a second job.

That’s what I feel a lot of people who demand more job-like qualities in games are trying to achieve- feeling employed while being unemployed. Which seems a waste to me, since the same drive applied towards something like software development could earn them quite a few dollars lol.

Why not introduce a stat like movement speed and let everyone use all styles of armor, this would make the game more interesting when you un-restrict weapons as well. This could also be the new magic find stat.

Games these days are taking away all the limits, I believe it would be nice if players moved a little slower or faster depending on what kind of armor they used. (Granted, not that much, because the toughness difference in armor isn’t really that much, protection is like an entire set of armor.)

Anet is still traumatized from trying to balance classes in GW1, so they kind of went overboard in locking down every class to a set number of variables to make it easier in this game. Allowing every class to do every armor set would add a complexity level that they are terrified of.

And wow, Anet… your profanity filter went kinda nuts on his quote here…

How do you distinguish yourself in this game?

I’ve never found a game where anyone thought anything anyone else did in PvE was “impressive”. I’ve never seen anyone look at someone’s loot and say “Man, you must be amazing!” or hear about their best raid times and go “You, sir, are an excellent player and I respect you as a human being!”. In the end, the person in question is usually the only one impressed with their PvE record.

So, that said- I wouldn’t stress over it. It wouldn’t be different anywhere else. Be impressed with your own work and play on!

Im generally indifferent. I’m not a huge fan of any of the legendary weapons, except maybe 1 or 2, and even then I can think of a few really awesome exotic items that look as good to me.

So, honestly, I barely even notice when someone has a legendary weapon most days :-\

Note the politeness of people against flipping and the rudeness of those arguing for. It’s very noticeable.

It’s because those who are for it are so taken back by the sheer audacity of those who are against it. “I dislike this style of play, and obviously am not very good at it, so please remove it from the game. Thank you!”. I actually came to this thread expecting to find that it was a joke, to be completely honest. I can certainly understand why someone would become annoyed at such a blatant display of self-centeredness.

IMO, this is a ridiculous idea. I’m personally terrible at AH flipping; I wish I wasn’t, I’ve tried it many times and failed every time, but the truth is I lose more money than I gain when I try it. But that said, just because I and others in this thread are no good at it doesn’t mean it should be removed from the game because there are those who are good at it. If that was the case, I would argue that PvP and dungeons should be removed from the game as well, and if not that, then all rewards tied to them should be!

All together, the only saving grace of this thread is that it is so fantastical in its idea that there is no chance of ever seeing it happen.

Can you imagine? “Oh look, I see an item I’d like to buy for my friend! Let me buy it for him/her and mail it to them… oh wait, it’s account bound now. Oh well, no more gifts for my friends!”.

tl;dr- No.

I wouldn’t have purchased a second account. It’s things like that which make them so perm-ban happy. There is no sub here, so unless you regularly buy gems then you are worth more to them banned (and thus likely to purchase a new account) than you are in game and having fun.

GW1 and GW2 are by far the easiest games I’ve seen to get perm-banned in, and actually are pretty infamous for this in the MMO community. To say Anet is well known for their heavy handed and rather shady banning strategies is an understatement. I have yet to see a sub based game where you can so easily lose your account and everything tied to it permanently.

On a side note- it sounds like Anet needs to train their support team a little better. Chances are, they are just seeing the previous reply and saying “Meh, this guy hasn’t accepted his action. RESEND!”

I suck at flipping the tp, but I could never imagine any game ever limiting the amount of money you can make off of it just because of that fact. I say kudos to the folks who can play it well. I’ll just go farm Orr :-P

All 3 new armors look fine. Some people I’ve met in LA were happy that their human warriors/guardians could finally wear a norn-looking armor. And Phoenix armor for female human characters is just extremely popular.

Im not immediately recognizing that armor- primarily that headpiece. Which is it, if you don’t mind sharing?

The Character Models

The animations in this game have spoiled me. Take running animations- I’ve tried to go back to Rift, but then I see the human (mathosian / eth) male running animation and go “wtf?!”

Here’s a video of it that I ran across some time ago that shows what I’m talking about-

The Character Models

The GW2 character models are good but not the best in the MMO, in my opinion. I prefer AION character model than GW2, though I heard that gw2 uses a part of its engine. AION has tons more hair, eye, facial, body, and even voice options. But don’t get me wrong, gw2 has the best environmental design I’ve ever seen.

Voice options is one of the biggest drawbacks for this game. I’ve had several friends not get to make the character they want because the voice doesn’t fit.

Example – make a human male. Make him a big black guy and tell me the voice fits perfectly. It ruins immersion for folks trying to make certain styles of characters. I actually really regret the voice acting in the game for that reason.

“Bring back the items we love from GW1!”

“Quit retexturing GW1 items and make something original!”

You know, there are biweekly content updates. Plenty of time to see BOTH.

It’s not the retexturing of GW1 items that folks are complaining about, its the retexturing of what was thought to be an exclusive GW2 item from the GW1 HoM that is causing the QQs.
