No to any offensive traits that trigger below 50% player health. Fit it into the skirmishing theme:

MDG: You and your pet gain 1 stack of might for every successful attack you make on a target while flanking. No ICD. Duration 8 seconds.

Might need tweaks.
Rapid Fire is 10 hits, warhorn 16, Barrage 12.
Access to 25 might if barrage hits 2 targets sounds a bit too powerful.

But the idea sounds much better than the current functionality.

@Lazze
The thing is that I have been playing Ranger ever since I started playing Guild Wars… And that’s nice few years already and I haven’t found a way to keep my pet healthy.

If I as a Ranger keep playing below 50% HP for 8 seconds – I am basically a horrible player. That’s just how it is. Furthermore, in PvE we always run with 25 might stacks, which means this trait would probably be used for PvP (where pet is constantly dead or below 50%, regardless of how much you try) or open world (where pet deals 30% of our damage, so boosting it by 16% via 8 might does not compete with it by a long shot).

Which means that it would only provide a temporary reduction for your loss. If you lose your pet – you’ll lose 30% of your damage.
Trying to fall below 50% HP yourself is a disgrace for the game itself. That’s much worse than keeping your pet dead in case you know he’s going to die again even if you ress him up.

Currently the trait is plain garbage and only keeps company the other garbage traits such … Honed Axes …

I kinda like the aoe on Winter’s Bite. I think that should be made baseline though.

We are comparing Quickness or AoE taunt fighting over an AoE chill that lasts for 3 seconds. Just come on. No one uses axe with Zerk stats anyways so that stat is useless as it is.

If the trait provided the benefits according to your pet’s HP (dead pet included), well yes. I would consider it. DPS increase when my pet get’s low would be triggered often, wouldn’t endanger Ranger himself and would provide an option to compete with Quick Draw.

I would honestly never run it. Counterproductive to the profession mechanic.

You mean even more than it currently is?

Maybe healing power will be more important to the druid

God, please, no…
That would imply that druid will become a healer and as we know – that role is completely out of the game design.

The thing is that even if Healing Power is druid’s desired stat – this trait only gives less than 100 power from that.

So in reality – what this trait does is:
~it provides nothing for hybrid or DPS builds
~if your goal is to heal people, it gives you Direct damage that is vastly inferior to condition damage source (uh, I mean… hello?)

Even people who intend to deal damage while focusing on healing power will go for conditions and will ignore Power one way or another.
This trait is just designed as bad as it could have been.

Still, the concept is horrible.
Your 1st thought when below 50% is to get away or get back up above 50%. And yes, both Enlargement and Instinctive Reaction (?) helps you with that.

Running Cleric armor gives you 85 (+-) bonus power from this trait. Let’s assume you sacrificed 45% of your stats for healing power, reducing your DPS by roughly the same amount (too lazy to do the maths that everyone would ignore anyways) just to get useless 85 bonus power that can’t even be noticed since your DPS is horrible whatsoever. This trait has absolutely no meaning or purpose.

Verdict: Horrible Trait

If it provided a meaningful amount of Power so it would open possibilities for hybrid survival builds, that would be okay (even the long mentioned reverted conversion from Power > Healing). Currently the trait is plain garbage and only keeps company the other garbage traits such as Predator’s Instinct, Most Dangerous Game, Honed Axes and so on.

ranger would become interesting if HoT brings a pet revamp, i.e. better f2’s on many pets, another active pet skill, and 90% aoe damage reduction in WvW/PVE

Pet is currently our true and only anchor in this game. We have the DPS to compete in PvE (but it doesn’t scale unless you go for NM – which is a shame for BM enthusiasts) and we might have been excellent skirmishers if our pets didn’t miss 80% of the attacks due to movement.

I mean, there already is like a hundred of (ignored) solutions.

The fun part comes in when people realize Ranger’s DPS is higher than the one of Warrior. And has been for a long time.

Yea, yea… Everybody knows that warrior with Phalanx Strength brings better team support. But that just implies that they are our and Thieves’ support tool.

Now that’s one lovely idea for our fellow Rangers who know what and how to play.

Developers are proud of pets and them being a class mechanic.

As I am. In a way, ranger’s is the only true mechanic in the entire game. I mean, something with a true layer of complexity. Others range from glorified signets (Guardian) , skill modifiers (ele, necro+hp bar, rev) to straight up “more buttons” (warrior, thief, mesmer, engineer).

In ranger there’s a whole lot of managing and as soon as I started seeing my pet as an asset rather than liability, I noticed my “pet handling” awareness improve.

I love my pets. But I’m not proud of them. They are just like a younger sibling.

And what about spirits?^ Can’ t believe that someone could even think that they were viable like they are right now

They aren’t far from being viable. I, for example found a nice use for them. As bombs.
Since they provide their benefits for 13 seconds after death, it’s not such a bad thing to simple keep sacrificing them.

But that means the design is horrible almost just as much as my manners. They simply don’t exist for the passives anymore (except Frost for PvE) and their actives take 1-5 seconds to complete.
If the spirits had their actives as baseline and they would provide stationary aura of the spirits now (means using the active would spawn the spirit outright) – we’d experience a nice era of viable useful and user-friendly spirits.

Now? They are just user-unfriendly and clunky as hell.

The soft CC you mentioned might very likely be the case.

You remember them saying that all the “on swap traits” is their effort to make pets wanted since the pet itself is garbage?
Of course they used different wording but that’s pretty much what they said.

If there’s one thing I miss from traits since the changes is the trait that gave you fury and might when your pet HP dropped below 50% (was back in Marksmanship).
… I mean … I wouldn’t argue if The Most Dangerous Game kept it’s current mechanic but triggered based on pet’s health (dead pet included).
I mean… Yea, I would consider this trait in WvW and some other environments that way.
Heck, it would be amazing for open world, too. Pet goes low way too often without any way to prevent it from dying. And it would beat Quick Draw in terms of DPS.

The OP’s got the point, though.

While the trait is fully functional and such – it’s still hard to make use of. I sometimes have my times when I curse the functionality because the NPC in the very back is being body-blocked (as a model) and I can’t target it – resulting in random direction of the arrow (usually to the skies above the rest of the targets behind).

It would definitely become a QoL change. Is it a buff? Well yea. Imagining how many reflects, projectile denial and what not abilities came with the elite specs (compare Strider’s Defence to Thief’s auto-attack with staff untraited) – I wouldn’t really find it that strange.

The bug comes from Protect Me mechanic where your pet “trades attacking for damage transfer” – meaning that if you force your pet to attack – he will consider it an order and stops his former action (damage transfer) in order to attack.

If just Spirits’ Cast Times actives were instant and would apply the effect on death – I’d find them viable.
Now they can be fine if the enemy is bad or will be useless if your enemy uses both of his eyes.

Also, I hate ANet for stealth-nerfing them. From everything I can get over with – I can’t stand stealth-nerfing. If I’m getting nerfed (unfairly) I have to know about it. keeping it to themselves is the highest level of toxic nature I hoped I’ll not suffer from in this game after it made me leave WoW several years ago.

I believe Gyros will be better since they were designed as an Elite spec (meaning they’ll buff it if it sux) rather than already luckluster abilities that got nerfed with pre-HoT patches (thanks Anet).

When i think about it which spot is still open? The dd is damage or controll, the scrapper is controll or support, at least i think so. So whats the most likely spot for druids?

Probably support too.
Both offensive and defensive. If you think about it, almost all of us already have a DPS choice. Giving us some more support (of whichever kind) is what Elite specializations seem to be about.

Necro – chill offensive support
Ele – stun breaking support
Guardian – Ranged utility support
Thief – offensive combat “support” (safe stomping) > Staff will not be their DPS option

And so on.

So I believe Rangers might very likely become the buffing/recuperating and disrupting kind of support. You know, those that have been mentioned a dozen of times like launch, roots, heals (I believe an Elite heal was announced back when Druid was leaked), resistance…

Also, rooting the enemy for 2 guaranteed Chill applications and possibly blowing 1 dodge roll are not bad either.

It’s just that we asked for that change into Trapper’s Expertise before pre-HoT changes and we got a silly cripple, so I’m trying to find some other possible solutions.

However, the immobilize always was and ever will be the best solution for trap problems. Making them high risk/high reward is what they need. Now only for the reward part…

The drones look nice, more in a moving spirits style than pets imho. Personally, i love pets/minions, i’m glad that another class gains access to the ‘summoner’ style.

Plus they’re insanely thematic. Asura engineers should have been surrounded by flying constructs from launch.

I’m glad that more classes get access to summoning mechanics.

I’m just kittened more than I used to be when I was a stupid teenager because (oh, correct me if I’m wrong) we Rangers were supposed to be the pet-class and the only thing I see happening is every single class being fixed, updated, buffed, remade, utilized except Rangers so seeing others getting only the best of what we were supposed to hold is getting frustrating
and I’m sincerely done with their load of promises and giggles about how “Invigorating Bond is a powerful trait”. I’m not kidding. I was disgusted when I saw Ranger pre-HoT updates and none of them even knew what for the love of lord happened to our class.

It’s just sad how they kept mentioning how good job they did with the synergy (such as I don’t know… Nature’s Vengeance with Fortifying bond maybe? I felt like I’ll need a resuscitation).
I felt wrong when they mentioned Synergy of Clarion Bond with Remorseless. They could have also mentioned that every Ranger can play a charr to get even more amazing Synergy with battle roar (for 1 hit on 30/35 sec CD. I’m out)

Maybe I wouldn’t have become so skeptic and arrogant about this matter if they took their job seriously. Because giggling about how they fail at what they do (quote after 3 seconds of silence of not knowing what the hell Ranger traits do: “Best level commentary! Haha”) is not really what I wanted to hear after they made countless of people buy their expansion for a lot of money (needless to say they included base game in the expansion, making people who bought it a few days before regret their life).

If they decided to take only the best of utilities from Ranger AI and offer it to Engineers – they need to feel responsible for the feelings we Rangers will hold after being ignored for 3 years straight now and still counting.

[Suggestion] How to make Frost Trap viable

in Ranger

Posted by: Tragic Positive.9356

Tragic Positive.9356

It’s Frost Trap. The chill it applies is the use. It may not see competitive use and used in niche chill builds, but the design for the intent is solid. A nice chill and one of the fastest ice fields available.

If it’s still not good enough, tell Anet replace it with a Dust Trap or improve Trapper’s Expertise.

That’s exactly the problem.
It’s still not good enough.

That’s a 30 second cooldown (that isn’t guaranteed to proc, procs late and people can just walk out) that blocks our only access to offense, defense or utility. Assuming we are playing PvP (only place where chill is useful).

If you want disruption – you don’t even think about it. Straight Spike trap it is.
If you want to kite – you don’t need any trap of choice because Cripple from Trapper’s Expertise.
If you want to deal damage, you’ll certainly not pick ice trap since Flame Trap will deal more even with 0 condi damage.

The trap is not fine because it doesn’t fill any single role or purpose at all. If you intend to play Trapper builds – you don’t have enough utility slots because you’ll certainly pick Spike Trap, Flame Trap, and if you are brave enough to go without Lightning Reflexes – you’ll get Viper’s Nest (and not Ice Trap).

With all due respect. How many of those who claim the trap is fine are using it today (for other purposes than hotjoin, please)

Absolutely no problem at all, Bryzy, we as the community are one. Names do not really matter. Well, for the beginning to inform you of my plans:

the 1st day of Beta druid weekend I’ll be reading through every trait and skill description, trying what synergy can be made. Then I’ll go and ask you guyz on forums for help and feedback on how did your combinations go for you, doing the maths on builds I didn’t think of (prejudice of useless builds just as The almighty Regen Ranger PvE meta as you know I loathe). The more suggestions to go with the merrier, that will be the time for you to give me the most crazy and out-of-meta suggestions (just please, everything in moderation… including moderation).

After all the tests numbers and brainstorming (probably when the beta ends) I’ll gather all the numerically and logically correct ideas and suggestions, and if they do not meet the expectations I’ll probably get a ban for being honest (aka ANet are a bunch of unfair kittens for they had 1 chance to get us fixed and they decided to buff icebow instead).

What I wanted to achieve is to actually have traps that have clear use.

The thing is that every other trap already has a purpose.
Flame – condi DPS
Viper’s Nest – condi healing reduction
Spike – CC and condi spike
Frost – <nothing in particular>

We have absolutely zero Traps for Zerk use (except Spike that doesn’t scale in DMG) and that’s why I believe this trap doesn’t need any more dps conditions glued since we as a class no longer need more condition pressure (that’s what other 3 traps are).

Traps (in my opinion) fit hunters and rangers in particular and I’d personally like to see traps being used even in Zerk gear with Longbow. I mean, that’s the whole purpose of a battle trap. Prevent the enemy from getting to you.
Don’t you guyz want a viable Longbow build with spike trap for CC and hard-hitting chilling (amazing fighting condi) trap? To actually play around positioning and not stats for once, as a ranger should?

I might look into it.
But I mean… You guyz know me. I never sugarcoat things. If the druid is a disgrace I’ll say it straight even though I explain why. The problem is that people never want to hear the truth if it isn’t something they wanted to hear.

I might stick to the usual activity I do now. Observe and provide feedback.

I want to hear the truth. We trust you.

I’ll be moving place with worse wi-fi so I won’t be able to do anything competitive like fractals or pvp anyways. Testing all day long seems like the thing I’ll be doing anyways.

Lately i think i’m very salty.. Am i?

You were farming the toxic mordrem event with me, weren’t you?
It made more of us straight-talking never sugarcoating thing anymore.

Anyways, for starters, it would be much appreciated if breathing didn’t cancel Sick’Em hand in hand with protect me.
I can’t stand that for Beast Mastery Builds I’m forced to control my pet via dull shouts because if I touch the pet any other way, I lose all the effects from shouts overall.

Sick’Em would be such a good choice for roaming or PvP or WvW if it didn’t get cancelled by pressing the bloody F2. The burst pets – birds – should be able to scale their burst with that ability. But if you try doing so – you lose all the damage.
But after all, why do I keep saying things like this? No one from ANet cares anyways and all of us already know.

Marksmanship - Lead the wind?

Predator’s Onslaught = sword oriented (max single target DPS)
Remorseless = GreatSword oriented (burst or vuln stacking)
Lead the Wind = Longbow oriented (safe range)

That’s just how it is. You have to take into consideration that if you hit at least 2 people with your arrows – you just got a 100% damage increase (that can go up to 500%).
