It sure feels like there’s more focus on BG from both sides than they against each other. By the way, someone was in SM earlier wasting supplies on useless siege. If someone happens to know who it was, if it was something done from a guild or some such, just let them know that’s not very cool. :<
Point update:
BG: 86,464
SoR: 54,467
TC: 51,326
Come on TC, focus on SoR and go for second and stop taking Rogues Quarry from BG every five minutes! :p
I have the exact quote in the OP, and with the way they worded it, it is very clear that they meant the wintersday box with the Minis, not the presents. :[
If it was mistakenly left in the patch notes, they should at least correct it. It’s been days now of no information about this (and a surprising lack of care from most players), which kind of sucks since it’d be amazing if the patch notes were actually true, even if it were a very rare drop.
Even at 1% chance of dropping, with the low chance of getting a Mini out of a box, that’s still enough that some people would get a wonderful Mini surprise this Wintersday. :’[
I won’t let this one go until we get an official response.
Well, it doesn’t appear that enough people care for this to get an official response at this rate. :[
People really don’t get the meaning of “grind” these days..
Sounds like you misunderstood then, like many are. He never said there wouldn’t be more cogs. He said that from the five days, you’d have enough for two. People need to stop putting words in devs mouths and jumping to conclusions/assumptions really early on and panicking/complaining before they even know what might happen. -.-’
Even if it had a .001% chance of dropping, we’d have heard >someone< talk about it by now. I’m really surprised no one seems to care, what with all the complaining about the wintersday box in the gem store you’d think people would care more that it was supposed to drop in the world for free.
You really should have named the thread “I don’t like wintersday minigames”, or “I don’t find wintersday minigames fun”. The way you say it sounds like they are simply badly designed and not fun for anyone, but I think the majority would say otherwise. :<
And doesn’t this go against forcing people to use the gem store?
They never said that everything available in the cash shop would also be obtainable ingame. You can play the game fully and never spend one penny in the cash shop.
Minis are not an essential part of the gameplay. Forcing people to use the cash shop would be something like : “repairing broken armor is only doable with an item you can only get in the cash shop”.
No, Minis are not essential, and everything in the gem store is entirely optional. But, at the same time, it >does< say very clearly in the patch notes that the wintersday mystery boxes are supposed to be a world drop.
Bump in the hopes of an answer.. I’m kind of surprised no one seems to care that they don’t drop in the world, and yet at the same time are non-stop complaining about the fact that they are gem store only. >.>’
Cogs are not for making tonics. It’s a marketing play to take up more inventory space so you buy gems and buy more bag slots or bank space :P
Yeah, that makes sense, they’re probably in league with the aliens on Planet X that are going to hurl asteroids at us tomorrow.
Apparently the 200 cogs from the gift were for people who had trouble receiving them from previous days that they completed, and is useless to the rest of us. I painted mine and hung them from my christmas tree.
I think this survey might have been a bit different had the boxes been available as drops in the world as the patch notes had said they would be.
If you want to have all 5, you’ll have to buy them, that’s all there is to it. They have to make money somehow. No one is forcing anyone to buy anything. 2 out of 5 is enough for most people to be satisfied, because the majority will really only have 1-3 that they really like anyway. Again, Arena Net has to make money somehow, be thankful there aren’t any pay-to-win type things on the gem store and that the prices aren’t outrageous like some other games out there. We can’t really complain about something this small when we don’t have a subscription fee and can play the game for years without putting a single dime into the gem store if we don’t want to.
Any chance of this getting a response? There have been several threads on this subject that have pretty much confirmed that no one has found these boxes as drops, even though it says they can drop in the patch notes. It feels like this is worth getting an official response about. :<
I think this deserves a bump, at least in the hopes of getting an official response. The fact that it seems to be a missing part of the event should be somewhat of a big deal, especially with all of the people complaining about the mystery boxes.
If you put your Snowman, Golem and Infinarium (All acquired from the Wintersday Box in the BLTC Gem Store) with 50 magical stuffing,. you get the Baby Quaggan Mini I believe.
Different minis than what the OP is talking about, though. I’m saying this mostly so no one gets confused and goes throwing their toys in the forge..
Yes, those are the ones I mean. I’ll edit the OP to clarify. I’m also going to try farming a bit and see if I have any luck. I’ve not heard anyone mention getting one so far, but I know it’s been mentioned that they’re supposed to drop. I’ll try to find a quote.
EDIT:
Here’s another thread that was on the same topic and got pushed down. It seems no one has found any so far, but it >was< in the patch notes.

(edited by Veltoss.9135)
My favourite out of the Wintersday Mini’s is easily the Festive Golem made of Christmas Tree Lights, Pretty Coloured Lights is always good!
THAT IS NOT A TOY MINI. YOU ARE A FAIL.
Anyway I pick the Griffon plush. My charr may be a big burly warrior with a big mace and axe, but he just wants to bury his muzzle in the griffon’s belly and pppphphphphphpphphphphph!
It’s not a toy, but it is a mini. It’s one of the ones from the wintersday boxes, and probably my favorite as well out of those.
I also thought I’d dislike the golem, but I like it a bit after seeing it ingame. I definitely like the griffon (who doesn’t?). I think as my second pet, I might go for the ventari, but I haven’t made up my mind yet.
I’ve read and remember hearing that the Mystery Wintersday Box would also be a drop out in the world and not only from the gem store. Is this still true, and what is the drop rate? Has anyone gotten any and out of how many kills? It’d be great if there was any possibility of getting one of the pets without buying the boxes.
EDIT:
Two other topics on this, all with people saying they have not seen any drop: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wintersday/Mystery-Wintersday-Box-Not-Dropping
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wintersday/Rare-mystery-Wintersday-boxes
Seems no one has had any luck getting these as loot, though it IS in the patch notes.
Patch Notes: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news/Game-Update-Notes-December-14-2012/first#post998477
Quote:
“Rare mystery Wintersday boxes will have a chance to drop throughout the world. They will also be available in the consumable category of the Gem Store. They will contain gifts available in-game, plus a random item only available in the store.”
(edited by Veltoss.9135)
I really wish they’d clarify a bit more about these pets. I’m fine with however it is, they have to make money somehow, but it’d be nice to know. I like pets. :<
What’s to say, that by the end of event, they won’t all be available for sale? You’re jumping to conclusions before the end of the event.
Because everybody wants to spend thousands of gems on boxes just to see the pets in the store for 300-400 gem each, right? Makes total sense, nothing to be angry about. The minipet part of the event is beyond recover. Spare for some heavy roll backs, there is absolutely nothing ANet can do to fix it.
It seems that way. People like to rage and complain, why wait and see if Arena Net changes anything before the end of the event? By buying now, they garuntee that they have something else to rage about later if Arena Net makes them easier to get. People love to rage.
PS: Stop exaggerating, there are plenty of changes ArenaNet could make, but no matter what they do, people will find something to rage about, because that’s just what some people have to do.
Same, I was extremely impressed with Lion’s Arch especially. The amount of detail and the amazing decor is great. Compared to the usual MMO christmas event, this is amazing so far. I’m also really enjoying running all over the place finding christmas presents.
They still did a pretty poor job of covering the ground with snow.
What do you mean poor? I thought they did a great job. The textures look good, there’s a lot of it, and everywhere that has machines running has snow on the ground. So what do you mean by poor exactly?
Also, it may be affected by view distance, but I can see the machines without getting to a high vantage point. They look like roundish boxes spitting out snow and moving around a little bit.
Has there been any talk by Arena Net about providing tools for machinima creation? If an Arena Net dev sees this and is able to comment, can you tell us if there are any plans to add more support for machinima creation? A model viewer, perhaps, or better yet, making GW2 assets available for use in Machinima so that we could use third-party tools would be absolutely amazing. But mostly I am just curious if there has been any mention of this in the past.
People quitting because they said there will be slight stat improvements you can get in a bunch of different ways easily with no power curve and no grind is just ridiculous. They obviously didn’t care much for the game to begin with, or that wouldn’t be enough to make them quit. And they definitely do not deserve a refund after playing for so long.
That doesn’t seem steep at all, especially considering you could buy it with gold. ArenaNet has to make money somehow.
If you’re talking about the Agony resistance, there is no Agony in other dungeons (yet?), so it won’t affect it at all besides the other increased stats over exotics.
First off, one new tier of gear does not make a treadmill.
Second, they’ve said already that they will be adding more ascended gear and more ways to get it.
Cool story bro.
Terrible idea. The majority of people talking about ascended on the forums are those kittening and freaking out about it. The people who are patient enough to wait for them to add more ascended gear and more ways to get it, and to balance the RNG, etc, are playing the game. The poll will be heavily biased in the “freaking out” group’s favor.
They already said they’re adding more ascended gear with more ways to get it, including from dungeons and more fun ways as well.
source?
“Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content.”
Oh I read that already ~ its all smoke and mirrors without an solid information. I wouldn’t put too much into that.
How the kitten is that not solid when it comes straight from them? You people are just trying your best to have a reason to freak the kitten out and keep your conspiracy theories going.
They already said they’re adding more ascended gear with more ways to get it, including from dungeons and more fun ways as well.
I hate the new gear because we weren’t supposed to have a vertical gear grind in this game. I hate the new dungeons because it has destroyed the dynamic events in the higher level areas completely. I am very disgusted with ANet for putting that crap in the game.
Good job ANexxSoft
Once again, the “grind” (which really isn’t much of a true grind at all) will disappear once they’ve added more ascended gear. The new dungeons will not be taking people away after a while once there are other ways to get ascended gear. People freaking out over a temporary problem for the sake of having something to kitten about.
You don’t get it and it won’t go back to normal.
The whole reason people are doing these new dungeons in lieu of the dynamic events in Orr is the new gear. We were never supposed to have a ‘gear grind’ in this game at all because it does exactly the things it is doing to the game now.
What don’t I “get”? They’re going to add more ascended gear and more ways to get it, they have said this. Temporarily, Fractals is the only way to get the current ascended gear. Temporarily, many people are doing Fractals rather than dynamic events. This is something that will be smoothed out with future patches as dynamic events are rebalanced and more ascended gear is added to the game.
But rather than be patient, people would rather freak the kitten out and act like the game is going to completely change forever. Let’s just make a huge jump to assumptions for the sake of having something to freak out about.
Using a G600 mouse… people even USE the keyboard these days?
How quaint.
Yes, because you can still be much faster and efficient by using your left hand and several fingers, compared to a couple fingers and mostly your thumb. And it should be noted that your thumb is slower then your other fingers.
Why would they nerf drop rates
IMO, to steer people towards the gem store and gem paks.
My conspiracy theory is that-
Stop. Stop now. We have enough conspiracy theorists on the forums without you creating some out of nothing.
The drop rate was accidentally increased by far too much, then they fixed it and reduced it back. If the drop rate is lower now, it’s probably to help stabilize the market temporarily because of the sudden rush of new dyes, so by lowering the drop rate even further for a temporary time they can help prevent the market from changing too much.

They’ve already said they will be adding more ascended gear with more ways to get it, and we know they’ll continue balancing things like this. Why all of this doomsaying? It killed GW2, really? It’s not dead, and that won’t kill it. All of the freaking out on the forums over ascended gear is really getting ridiculous.
It’s not just the gear. It’s the awful gating mechanic, the random disconnects leading to players being unable to progress and the obnoxious elitism these changes brought about.
What people don’t seem to realize is that all of these problems, including the lack of players elsewhere in the world, will be fixed over time as they add more ascended gear and more ways to get it, which they have already said they’re going to be doing. This is a temporary issue that people are over-reacting about, because let’s face it, people >love< to freak out and complain about video games.
Still sounds just like someone talking about a government conspiracy theory, a lot of guesses and assumptions, very few actual facts.
Ok thanks for taking the time to provide your point of view.
In regards to point 1 – yes I do remember what they said… and yes I do remember the manifesto very clearly.
The thing is, everything must evolve with time.
Whoa whoa whoa…stop right there. We are 3 months into the game, and you’re saying “things must evolve with time”?? Ridiculous. I would bet my bottom dollar that this whole fiasco was planned even before release, which means they pulled a bait and switch on us. This game was advertised for 5 years…5 YEARS…as not having any sort of vertical progression. And now its just as simple as “its evolving”? No. That pig doesn’t fly.
All of you people freaking out are just making >huge< assumptions based off of nothing. You’re all reaching as hard as you can just for a reason to freak out. Calm the heck down already. This isn’t a conspiracy theory.
There is no conspiracy, just simple math and common sense. The “iterative” process for this size implementation takes much longer than 3 months, I can guarantee that. From initial proposal to implementation you have all manner of processes that need to be completed…lore, modeling, programming, stat mechanics, concept art, testing, etc. This has been in the works since well before launch, and now they can deal with the backlash.
They added a few Ascended items and said they’ll add more in the future. You and everyone else seem to be blowing this far out of proportion, assuming there will be a treadmill, that the game is entirely changing, etc.
Some classes and races really go well together. Humans (preferably dressed in noble-looking gear) look the best as Mesmers in my opinion. Charr make awesome warriors, and Norns make cool Guardians. Sylvari obviously rangers with the fern wolf pet. I also like human females as Elementalists, they can really pull off the look and animations.
Ok thanks for taking the time to provide your point of view.

According to Arena Net, it never ends. But at some point people will find it impossible to progress because of how much Agony will be hitting them for. It’ll be interesting to see how far good groups can get once there is more gear with agony resistance.
Why not get a group together on your server to help clear the event, or ask your guild for help? We’re never really had trouble getting this cleared on Blackgate if people ask for help. It’s always a good idea to build a sense of community in your server for things like this.
Guess not, with that attitude. If you didn’t find even one person after 15 minutes, you should just take a break. If your server is populated you won’t be able to enter your server’s LA without getting an overflow, which is an extreme advantage in finding groups. Can’t find someone? Log out, log back in, get another overflow, and see if there is anyone in that overflow.
Ready to give up on your monthly (even though you started pretty late..) after one hour and then making a thread about it makes it seem like you just want some attention, or just want to complain about something and get sympathy when you don’t really deserve it.
2) They’re adding more of it, which implies that each new dungeon will gate content by requiring more of it.
That’s a big assumption. And a lot of this panic people are having seems to be based on making huge assumptions.
The incentive is fun. I don’t believe that there’s any major design flaw on the side of fun here, but that it’s simply a different game, and not to your tastes.
I’m pretty sure they said it would take some time to get a system for this in place.
