Retribution or Forget it?

It seems possible to me that all of the Molten Alliance, Aether Blades, and Toxic Alliance forces that continued to follow Scarlet went to Lion’s Arch, that the attack on the city was the, ‘All or Nothing,’ moment for those three factions, and that they’ll be wiped out and any possible survivors will simply return to their respective factions. Molten Alliance Dredge would return to the Moletariate, while their Charr would return to the Flame Legion. Toxic Alliance Nightmare Court Sylvari would return to the Nightmare Court, while Krait return to… Krait. That sort of thing.

In short, I wouldn’t be surprised if these Alliances were destroyed or disbanded.

The Toxic Kraits are (according to Angel) considered outsiders to the original Kraits. So they can “never” return.

The other factions, maybe.

Good point. However, I remember another post somewhere on the forums by a user speculating that the Toxic Alliance Krait, as they’re all of the Toxic Variety after the tower event, may be mind controlled by Scarlet through the toxins. In short, I would imagine -all- of the Toxic Krait are in Lion’s Arch, and they’ll all fight to the death.

Another lesbian relationship?

I don’t really care about lesbian relationship, but I feel that the kiss didn’t really need to be there. Replace Marjory with another male character(Not Faren) that we barely know. I would have the same reaction.

If there is going to be a love story, the writers need to go deeper within their relationship. We need character development.

I disprove.

I think another valid issue is how temporary the Living Story content is. If you don’t follow along with it, you miss out on things like the developing relationship of Kasmeer and Marjory, so something like this comes off as fanservice or, ‘Being progressive for the sake of being progressive.’ Granted, that’s more of a complaint with Living Story.

Either a relationship like Kasmeer and Marjory’s needs to have a more permanent and available development for a character to progress through, or there needs to be a way to replay Living Story content/scenes/dialogue with a suggested chronological order.

There are lots of intelligences wandering around without any protection from the dream. Why was Scarlet chosen?

Someone had to be.

Though in all honesty, its probably because of the machine she was attached to that let her tap into the universe itself or whatever it did exactly. It basically allowed her to see everything and how its all connected. The Eternal Alchemy.

Vexander.9850

Ah. Never played WoW, so that’s why I’ve never heard of him.

It would need to be a really, really convincing idea for said winged characters to not fly though. What’s to stop them from simply flying around when they’re out and about in the wilderness? Or if the players are roleplaying criminal/outcast phoenixes that don’t give a quaggan about laws or regulations? That’s why I still think it’ll never happen; it would stretch believability too much.

They’d have to get the special armor and training necessary from their government that would allow them to fly and fight at the same time. Besides, the Gliding animation pretty much would be flying.

Vexander.9850

As who is? Sounds like a Charr name, but I can’t say I’ve run into him/her before.

We both know that a true winged race would never get introduced. It would require a complete overhaul of the game engine to support flight and aerial combat, so we can pretty much rule it out from ever happening. The best we’d get is one with cosmetic wings like the Largos, but such races would have massive clipping issues with armor and weapons.

He’s from World of Warcraft. Has wings on his arms like the Tengu do. Likewise, I wouldn’t implement the phoenix with aerial combat or flight. Quite simply, that’d be lorewise a restricted thing. Special armor only the government can give out or something that lets you fight in the air. So, it’d be a strictly NPC thing. Adventuring phoenixes (Players) would be able to glide instead of walk, like how charr run on all fours when they run.

Phoenixes were already present in GW1. They were charmable animals for Ranger pets, so it’s highly unlikely they’d become a playable race.

Weren’t bears and various forms of felines also available for GW1? Didn’t stop the Kodan from being a race or the Charr from becoming a playable race =D

But yeah, like I said, I doubt Arena.net will do that. I just like to make outrageous ideas. That, and let’s be honest, in almost all MMOs, people have always wanted a -winged- race.

Vexander.9850

Well, they can add a gay character, and not have him in a relationship. I suggested that Loremaster character. Personally I think the story is due for another character on par with figures like Lord Odran, and making that character gay to make him a bit more down to earth and relatable would seem like a good move. It doesn’t have to be in your face, or a major part of his character, something minor discovered through dialogue. Making him, ‘Brilliant but Lazy,’ ensures he’s not over-powered as well. The kind of person who doesn’t take off the gloves and prefers to let other people do the work while he does the thinking. A strategist in other words. Still combat capable, but far more inclined to smell the flowers and hold back. Doesn’t want to break a sweat.

Vexander.9850

Don’t get me wrong, Vexander – I think the idea of having Phoenixes and Kitsune as playable races would be pretty cool… but as Getefix mentioned above, if Phoenixes were pure flying creatures, it’d be pretty hard to implement.

Just think – some bad-kitten high-level boss decided to use a knockdown skill on all surrounding players, but Phoenixes, flying high above the ground, would be like: “Haha! Can’t touch this!” then everyone would want to be a Phoenix. Mechanics would be totally screwed.

Kitsune are remotely possible as Canthan characters, but there haven’t been any lore on them (to my knowledge), so I don’t see them springing up too soon.

Also, I just want my Tengu ranger so badly. So there. XD

Well, if Phoenix were implemented, my personal suggestion is that they’re too heavy to fly if they’re equipped for combat. So the best they can do is to glide around like, say, being on the Broom Toy. Except in combat when they have both feet on the ground, meaning knockback and knockdown mechanics and all that apply to them.

As for Kitsune, yeah it’d be something new, but I don’t think the Largos existed prior to GW2, so its not as though Arena.net is afraid of implementing new races. Certainly it seems the only option for a race other than humans coming from Cantha. You’d need a race capable of blending in with the humans, and given RL Kitsune mythology and stuff, that’s right up their alley.

Vexander.9850

your phoenix idea is pretty much pretty looking tengu, kitsune are slim charr

I wasn’t aware the Charr were a race whose very biology incorporated magic, or who lived amongst humans, disguised as them. Or that Phoenix, winged humans in essence, have clawed feet and hands or were extreme isolationists. If you read what I wrote, you’d see how badly wrong you are. Unless you’re just looking at, “fur and feathers.”

you never said anything about no hands…. then they won’t be a playable race cause how will they hold weapons? and the charr sometimes are magic-orientated, just look at the ‘gold’ legion (what happened to calling the flame legion the ‘gold’ legion anyways?)

I suppose wasn’t that clear, I meant physically speaking (fox-people/cat-people…. meh)

if you want to create a new race – try insect-people
or maybe the races to be used in utopia

Well, to each their own. I was mostly thinking what’d be interesting. Certainly a Kitsune race would blend in well with Cantha’s culture and all. So what if they’re fox people? Kodan are bear people, Norn are shape shifters, etc… and as far as the Phoenix concept, well, they’d have hands. They’re kinda winged humans appearance wise, but I can’t see that working out anyways.

I just like making absurd suggestions.

Another lesbian relationship?

in Lore

Posted by: Vexander.9850

Vexander.9850

I am frustrated with the way they portrayed lesbians and the fact that there aren’t any non-homosexual relationships just makes it worse. The story so far gives off a glow of, ‘how can we make this more controversial to the mainstream audience’ and also seems to emphasize the fact that Arenanet is biased against non-homosexuals. We get it, your gay, we don’t really care and we don’t need to see your fantasies on our screens. They have the right to putt whatever they want up there, but the fact that they most notably putt up lipstick lesbians made it hard to appreciate their love story in the first place. Let alone the fact that I didn’t give 2 shakes of a broken compass about Marjary and her companion at all. That isn’t a pair of any lesbians I’ve ever met and not using characters from the story made the whole living world relationship pointless. It was poorly structured and although their kiss at the end could have been a great aspect of the story, I feel that the poorly done animation on the part of Marjory’s underling made it difficult to believe she even cared. Someone in the animation and story departments has been watching too much television.

The following list was made by another poster, I believe somewhere in this very thread. It proves how very wrong you are to assume there are no Heterosexual couples and that they are, in fact, the majority in the game, with lesbian couples being the second most numerous (though having maybe 5 or 6 couples total to the long list of hetero couples).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t there supposed to be another Sylvari Tree in the Shiverpeaks as well? I thought I read that somewhere. If that’s the case it seems to me that the Sylvari race may be Tyria’s reaction to the Elder Dragons. I mean the planet itself. Malyck’s tree is near Mordremoth, the Pale Tree is across the sea from Zhaitan, and there’s supposedly another tree in the Northern Shiverpeaks (unless I’m wrong), which would place it near Jormag.

Personally I do think the theory about the Sylvari being Elder Dragon Minions does hold merit. However, I’ll also believe they’re a creation of Melandru as well. At the moment, being connected to Mordremoth seems the more likely scenario.

I think neither Kitsunes or Phoenixes would fit in Cantha/Elona, they seem too mythical for gw universe. Though Tyria (the planet) is a huge place, we’ve seen only small part of it through gw1/gw2. I wonder if ANet would let us explore other continents in the future

Yeah I know they don’t exactly fit necessarily. Doesn’t mean I can’t make something up or something. Anet will ultimately add new playable races or not, and bring in new NPC races or not. Considering how much other mythology you can find in Tyria, I wouldn’t be surprised to see either one come up sooner or later. Pretty sure there are phoenixes (birds) in Cantha as well, and in GW1. The concept would just be making a race out of them. Kind of angel-like, in appearance.

Would be nice if Arena.net decided to make some new races as well. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t mind, say, Largos, but underwater combat is ultimately a gimmick in the game and rarely satisfying. I’ve only ever been able to enjoy it on a Thief, no other class feels -capable- in the water.

If it were me, I’d add new races with expansions and try to make them fit somehow.

Cantha: Kitsunes. A race of magical fox people who have been a myth in Cantha for ages. They often disguise themselves as humans, and tend to be quite skilled in creating illusions. They continue to remain hidden to Cantha due to its human supremacist policy, but when Cantha comes under threat, choose to reveal themselves to protect it, allying with the other races.

Elona: Phoenixes. A race of winged humanoids who live in the skies and mountains of Elona. As Palawa Joko’s influence spreads over the lands, these people who had remained unaware of others for many ages decided to combat the threat he posed. Discovering that the world has many races, they show an innate curiosity and friendliness towards them, readily allying with them.

Another lesbian relationship?

Again, in -my opinion- (so feel free to discard it), it was neither the time nor the place for the relationship sub-plot to be advanced, and it made Kasmeer seem like a blatant, negative-gender stereotype trope. That’s what I don’t like about it. I’d much rather their relationship had its own cutscene elsewhere to progress it, rather than getting cut short and forced somewhere it didn’t feel natural.

This is how it felt to me as well. It really was a sort of “I’m ready for my big giant lesbian kiss now mister director. Cue closeup!” -kind of moment. It felt really ham-fisted. As if the whole purpose of the scene was not just to advance the romantic sub plot, but to have a lesbian kiss in there just at the last second.

Advancing a romantic sub plot is good. Having a lesbian kiss scene for the sake of having a lesbian kiss scene, is bad. I feel videogames quite often venture into this well-intentioned but poorly executed portrayal of same-sex relationships.

I’d honestly have rather had the scene somewhere more appropriate. Whether they’re celebrating in Divinity’s Reach, standing beside the Queen as she gives a speech to the city of Scarlet’s Fall, or if its among the refugee camps outside of Lion’s Arch. It was a touching scene, and a nice addition to their relationship. It just didn’t feel like the right time or place, and as a result, it felt like a cop out to their relationship.

Another lesbian relationship?

Yes, I said it didn’t need to happen. If you take that scene away, it changes -nothing- about the instance dungeon and the story. It has no impact on it. Marjory and Rox are both still injured, Scarlet is still dead, the Elder Dragon still gets woken up, and the drill still explodes.

No it is important as it shows the process of the relationship. Something they’ve been working on for months. Why can’t GW2 have sub-plots occurring along with the main-plot? Why can’t a single event progress multiple plot lines? Why can’t we defeat Scarlet and see the progression Marjory and Kasmeer’s relationship? I don’t see you complaining about how Rox and Brahams relationships was also progressed during the same event.

As for Rox and Braham, I don’t see how their relationship advanced there. They were -already- very loyal friends to one another, had already shown a willingness to give up their own pursuits for the other. That just re-affirmed their existing relationship and gave it context to the situation.

Masculine effects for a male Mesmer?

I thought it was sad that the mesmer in the new group was a female. We already have Gwen, Jenna and Anise as iconic mesmers, we really didn’t need Kasmeer as one. It was a missed opportunity to portray a male mesmer for a change. The female mesmer is like ArenaNet’s own special trope. Male mesmers exist but they generally lean towards the drama club side of things.

I really like the suggestion of ravens. It really buys into the trickery aspect of the class.

I’d be up for seeing racially oriented effects for Mesmers. Humans with butterflies, Norn with Ravens, Charr with Cogs, Asura with Crystals, and Sylvari with Leaves. As far as Kasmeer being the third prominent female mesmer in the story, I think Anet is kind of hinting at something. Jennah is royalty, Anise is nobility, and from what I understand Kasmeer was also nobility. Seems likely that either female nobles often take the path of the Mesmer, perhaps as a status symbol amongst Krytan humans, or that many choose that path in honor of Jennah, who is, after all, a very beloved Queen.

Coming to a gem store near you, yup I would pay for that (Norn Mesmer).

Class/Race specific things like that -would- be pretty nifty. Can’t figure out what to give humans though. Can’t resemble what the other races have, so an eagle is out because it’d be too close to Ravens…

All five races servants of the Dragons?

Posted by: Vexander.9850

I think you’re looking into this too deeply.

The Norn have no love of dragons, at all, they never have, they utterly despise dragons probably more than any of the other races of Tyria, even before they had to face off with them.

Humans are too busy killing themselves, even during GW1 and its prologue The Guild Wars themselves, Humans have always been more interested in killing and conquering humans than actually fighting dragons.

I wouldn’t agree with these two points. Some Norn love the Dragons; the Sons of Svanir. Not only that, they’re tolerated enough to have a place in -Hoelbrak- no less.

That said, I can’t say I’m exactly aware of humans constantly killing other humans. Not large-scale wars at any rate. I can’t think of any wars between, say, Kryta and Ascalon, or Orr and Ascalon, or Kryta and Orr, and I don’t think Elona or Cantha are anywhere close enough to another human kingdom to even wage war on them.

Now, if people can say that about Jaina, what’ll they think of Kasmeer? Anyways, there’s a time and a place for those sort of scenes as well in my opinion. I don’t think that was the time or the place. If you removed that scene from the mini dungeon, does it really change anything? Does it affect its moods or atmosphere? Not really. That kiss would have been better placed in a celebration.

If they kissed in a celebration or anywhere else, people like you would still kitten about it being “unnecessary”. Nothing would change.

And I don’t agree with your whole “Kasmeer is hysterical and dramatic”. If you thought your lover was dead on the floor bet your tail you wouldn’t stop and think rationally. If she was a guy, you probably wouldn’t call him on being “hysterical”. Her reaction was understandable and everyone I played with empathized with her , and that made killing Scarlet even more satisfactory.

I’ll thank you not to speak for me. If Kasmeer and Marjory were Kensmeer and Manson or whatever, I’d still feel the same way, as there is also a trope for an over-emotional homosexual male. If they kissed in a celebration, I’d have been fine with it. I’m not sure who you think you are to tell me what I think, but I’ll let you know you’re wrong all the same.

The only people who are posting about quotas are those who have an issue with homosexuality. For these sorts of people one homosexual relationship is too many so as soon as one appears, especially one that seems to be happy and loving, they suddenly discover the need for a quota for hetro relationships because there are too few “normal” relationships being shown. They also ignore any evidence presented that says otherwise.

I tend to ignore most of them, but unfortunately they do seem to be rather persistent in their bigotry. Thankfully the majority of players don’t seem to have an issue with Kasmeer and Marjory’s relationship and I have yet to see anyone in game comment negatively about it.

This a common sociological phenomenon whenever you have an a suppressed group of people who begin to have rights and representation in a society where a privileged, dominant group has kept them marginalized.

There was a time when people claimed to support women, as long they didn’t vote or work. There was a time when some folks thought black people were fine as long as they didn’t eat in the same restaurants as whites. Today, when gay people occasionally get the same rights and representation as straights, there is naturally going to be a portion of the privileged group that sees any move toward equality as an erosion of their privileged position. As with previous civil rights issues, people always come to the table with all sorts of “moral” and “logical” rationalizations and reasons to justify inequality and prejudice.

The Stereotype that women are more prone to emotional outbursts, being ruled by their emotions, being unreasonable when they get emotional, etc… Come on, its a common stereotype in media and literature. I’m not saying women cannot have or portray emotion without succumbing to this, but when it gets extreme, it falls into a stereotype.

If you’d like to learn more, I suggest reading this page:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HystericalWoman

I don’t see her reaction being particularly uncalled for, whether the character is male or female. Her lover is dead on the ground and she got emotional. She certainly can’t fall into the Hysterical Woman trope though because of the how the scene actually played out: instead of weeping in a corner, she went for the throat and attacked Scarlet directly. It’s actually a pretty balanced portrayal of a woman (or healthy human being, for that manner) as she shows both vulnerability and the ability to step up and overcome being vulnerable with competence and action. She wasn’t depicted as being a helpless victim or hysterical princess.

I’m not really a fan of the LS in general since a lot of it is simplistic, boring and forgettable, but i’m having a hard time seeing fault in how Kasmeer was framed in that final scene.

Like I said, we’re all entitled to our opinions, and I’ll respect yours. I know people who hate Jaina Proudmoore for being a [Female Dog], and I’ve seen people on forums post things like, ‘What do you expect? She’s a woman, of course she’s going to go crazy when her emotions get ramped up.’ I happen to find Jaina to be very reasonable and justified at those times myself.

Not really. We’ve been assured before outside of the game that they do care for each other mutually, but from what we see in game and the way their interactions are written in the Edge of Destiny novel, it really comes across as one-sided idol-worship on Logan’s part. I’d definitely not object to seeing that relationship explored a little more.

Well, do they care for each other or are they in love with each other? There is a difference between these things, after all. She can still care for him without being slavishly devoted to liking him.

Personally I take it to be more like she’s wearing the queenly mask

. . . warning, TV Tropes link.

That’s how I always saw it as well. Since they’re both very public images and such, they have to be careful about how they interact. When you take into consideration the rivalry between the Ministry Guard and the Seraph as well, and Caudecus’ political position in opposition to Jennah, I honestly suspect that she and Logan can’t do a lot of things they’d like to.

However, I would love a Living Story where Jennah and Logan get married. The nature of how they fit into the narrative doesn’t even have to change. Jennah still rules as Queen through her bloodline while Logan as King acts in direct defense of Kryta and her allies.

I would like some major gay male npcs

My wife finished GW1 with a competent ele. The only interest she’s ever shown in GW2 has been when I told her there was a gay male couple in beta. We’re in a very liberal US state, and we both are as well, so that really perked her interest in the game.

Just sayin’, in case Anet is interested in selling to females…

Must have been the two Sylvari. They’re the only male couple I’m aware of in the game. Which is a bit of a shame, but let’s be honest, when the world is facing the apocalypse, I don’t think people are typically going to be too worried about their dating life.

I’ve heard murmurs of there being a gay male Norn npc in one of the Vigil story lines for Norn, but I’ve not personally done it myself. The npc is Wjerd Bladeborn, whom might have a crush on Fibharr Ygosson based on his dialog, or perhaps he’s implying that Fibharr has a crush on Famke the Fair instead.

To my knowledge there aren’t that many gay male npcs. You really have to look hard to find what few there are, and just about all of them are locked behind personal story choices that you might not even take. I can however count at least 5 gay female npcs quite readily. There are of course the big four; Caithe, Faolain, Marjory and Kasmeer. There is also a widowed female Charr named Fronis Darkstone in Diessa Plateau who tells the story of how her mate was killed by the Flame Legion. (She only has this dialog when she isn’t patrolling Ebonshore Plant) Sariel could also be interpreted as being in a relationship with Faolain. She gets very thorny about the prospect of Faolain wanting Caithe back.

I’d love for there to be a prominent male pairing that isn’t shown once and then promptly forgotten about (I.E. personal story), or just a case of fandom crack shipping. (no matter how much some of us may want it, Logan and Rytlock will never be a thing…)

Honestly I could see Rytlock and Rox getting together. They seem like they’d make a pretty good pair. But yeah, there aren’t many male NPCs that you can tell are actually homosexual. Its never bothered me though. If the defining trait of a character is their sexuality, then you have a weak character in terms of narrative and development. That’s why I’ve always liked how Arena.net has done their relationships. Caithe and Faolin aren’t defined by loving one another. Kasmeer and Marjory aren’t -defined- by being a couple. Its a part of their character, but both are highly developed beyond that.

The way I’d go about it would be to have a new major character who is male and homosexual to have some dialogue options. Take the one I suggested earlier, the really scholarly guy.

“So, you’re a Loremaster? I bet that leaves little time to go to the taverns and find someone special.”
[If the PC is Male]: “Why go to taverns when I get to work with handsome men like you? Ha! Don’t worry, I’m not actually interested in you. You’re not quite my type, no offense meant.”
[If the PC is Female]: “True, but the kind of men I find attractive don’t tend to frequent taverns.”

Because that’s honestly not my problem. Do I have to repeat that I’m gay?

And? A lot of gay men have issues with woman and even lesbians because they suffer from the same male centric world view as most men do. Looking through your posting issue you certainly seem to have this problem, I mean redesigning the living story cast to make it all male… complaining that there are too many female gods and too many male villains and the rather silly post where you said you thought prior to the kiss that Kas and Jory behaved like sisters… (either that was deliberate or you’ve slept your way through the dialogue in the past living story updates).

And you didn’t answer the question. What in particular did Kasmeer say or do that showed she was ruled by her emotions or was an unreasonable hysterical woman?

I’m sorry, what? When did I say re-design the Living Story cast to make them all male? I have never -complained- that there are too many female gods or male villains, I noted it to those people who thought this game was anti-female because they were being idiots. As for Marjory and Kasmeer, I don’t play every bit of Living Story. Trying to keep up with it 100% of the time gets very tiring. As it is I know for certain I missed the Evacuation of Lion’s Arch and the part where they all went into the Mists. Given what I saw of the two from the Toxic Tower and other bits I had seen, they seemed like sisters to me.

As for what Kasmeer did? Her portrayal in the Dungeon makes it clear. What does she do when her lover is injured so badly she seems dead? Does she try to get help? Does she stop and think rationally? No. She gets angry and acts on that Anger (and was pretty awesome doing so I might add, not that it doesn’t help the issue). So after that emotional outburst, she follows up with another emotional outburst in the form of the kiss. Do you see what I’m getting at? She’s not acting rationally, she’s acting irrationally, which fits into the trope I linked, if you bothered to read it.

Honestly you seem more intent on attacking anyone and everything that doesn’t agree with you, going so far as to put words into people’s mouths and make attacks on their character by misreading their past posting history. Rather than looking at a criticism made by someone, stopping, and going, “Hrmn… I can kinda see what he means, -but- I still don’t quite agree,” you’re going full blown, “Urgh, this male chauvinist needs to burn.”

Relax. Its a game. Its a story. I am -allowed- to have an opinion and to support that opinion, even if you don’t agree with it.

[Edit]: For Clarification, I think you’d do well to read my posts completely when making judgments. Allow me to copy paste the one you seem to have taken issue with, and highlight some points for you.

I don’t think anyone could complain about this game having, “Typical female villain stereotypes,” all that much. It barely has -any- female villains. The majority of villains are male, and the majority of heros are female. It’s been that way since Guild Wars, and continued into Guild Wars 2. I mean, let’s keep count for a moment…

Of the Six human Gods, Four are Female.
The Last known Human Royal is a Queen, who has a male Minister as her political arch nemesis at this point.
Destiny’s Edge is composed of 3 females, 2 males, with a woman being their leader (Eir Stegalkin), and another female being the Catalyst to bring them together (Caithe).
A massive part of the Charr conflict with the Flame Legion is their treatment of female Charr.
The Pale Tree, a deity-like being, is portrayed as Female.
The Sons of Svanir is an entirely -Male- antagonist group.

I mean really, Scarlet may be a lot of things, but its almost -refreshing- to have a female antagonist for a change. I really, personally do not consider gender inequality to be a huge issue in this game or story. There’s a fair mix of male and female characters, and all characters are, for the most part, portrayed well.

I just think its silly to pull the gender card into this. I’ve had arguments with people who thought Guild Wars 2 was a Misogynist game before for one reason or another. I really just don’t think gender has that big of a role in Tyria when it comes to characters like Scarlet. Being male or female wouldn’t really change her in my opinion.

The Stereotype that women are more prone to emotional outbursts, being ruled by their emotions, being unreasonable when they get emotional, etc…

What particular emotional outburst did Kasmeer suffer from that showed she was ruled by her emotions or was being unreasonable? I think you are clutching at straws here, why just not admit that your real problem with the kiss is that involved two women or just not post at all.

Because that’s honestly not my problem. Do I have to repeat that I’m gay?

I used to think that the butterflies were a bit effeminate at first, but as Astral said, while toying around with one of my alts for a bit, I’ve managed to role play a male Mesmer who’s a tad of a playboy rogue.

I now see the pink as magenta/purple (a very royal/noble/typically psychic colour) and the butterflies as gender-neutral effects of the mind-bending glamour.

This is how I always saw it to be honest. Butterflies are just a symbol of the class it seems.

Up until the latest update that was truly meant to benefit larger servers(even if not on purpose) I would have said A+. But now that they decided we were having too much fun and that we had actually figured out how to beat the event regularly, D-. Close to fail.

At least I completed the content before that. Now I can do world bosses and WvW without worrying about missing an event that I once truly enjoyed.

Seriously, people actually started moving to the regularly scheduled boss fights like Jormag and Golem II yesterday.

Good job alienating casual players, small servers and making it a “Play the way ANeT wants you to play” event. I could see if there was an exploit, but the run from boss to boss method was actually fostering coordination and server unity on my server. That is all but gone now.

Really? I kind of thought the change was an improvement. Until the change no group I was in was able to beat the Prime Hologram for some reason or other, but after the change things seemed to work out better. That, and breaking up the knights forces three groups of players to coordinate, which solved the issue of getting into the Prime Hologram area only to die from a laser path immediately (turns out Scarlet starts doing stuff a minute after the first knight is killed, so if they die at the same time, you can enter the arena without worry).

My server had no problem until the latest update. We would take out 1 knight at a time and still have 2-4 minutes left on the event. Then we would go in to the Hologram fight, a few would die or be downed, but not event failure threatening. We weren’t aiming for perfection, we were aiming for success.

Before the all on one knight method we were having occasional successes. The groups with fewer people tended to fail even if we got the knights down and progressed to the Hologram.

Now you need a larger force than one single zerg(40-60 was my server’s zerg doing the one at a time method). If you don’t have 3 sizable zergs, you fail, and never reach the Hologram fight. The old method actually brought our server together, but now LA is just a champ farming zone. I’m sure if they can swing a full zone they may try the new REQUIRED method, but otherwise the event is dead on my server.

Yeah I can see what you mean. Maybe they should make the old method possible again somehow. Say, when one of the Knights is downed, the other two lose 1/3rd of their HP? I think that’d encourage people to do it the old way, but still allow three large zergs to work at the same time as well.

Possibility of a new playable race?

The Tengu were originally going to be a 6th playable race. I believe there was commentary on the, ‘Making of,’ DVD that came in the physical collector’s edition of the game. I didn’t get that copy, but I know people who did. I don’t recall why the Tengu were cut from the final product.

Personally? I’m glad they were. I can’t see them really being that interesting of a race. I’d rather see a new race crop up. That, or an obviously magical race as we really don’t have a race where magic is a part of their culture, society, and biology.

Humans – A little bit of everything
Asura – Magic and Technology with an emphasis on Intellect
Charr – War and Technology with three legions dealing in Combat, Engineering, and Stealth
Norn – Strength and Personal Honor with a touch of hedonism (they have a LOT of parties)
Sylvari – Nature and Curiosity really dominate their culture

I can’t see the Tengu bringing something unique to the selection of races.

Going to say here what I said in another thread.

As someone who is gay, I found the reveal a surprise, but ultimately, I am disappointed in it, though not nearly enough that it makes me change my mind about the game or anything. I’ll try to list my issues.

1) It makes Kasmeer into a Stereotypical Over-Emotional Woman trope. A lot of the female characters in GW2 are strong individuals with different traits, personalities, and so forth. A lot of the characters regardless of gender are like that. I think this is the first time a negative stereotype has been applicable to a character based on gender or orientation. Its disappointing.

2) A Video Game is not the right medium for that kind of a reveal. It felt forced into the cinematic for no reason. I’d rather have read about those two and their relationship, how it developed, grew, and so forth, in a novel or a short story, rather than having it sprung on me in the heat of battle. What could have been a really good story and reveal felt cheap and hollow.

Was it over-emotional of her to taunt Scarlet and use her illusions as a distraction in a maneuver for you to execute Scarlet yourself? Why does every woman have to be strong, it’s almost like a spit in the face to those that rely on their significant other. After what Kasmeer’s been through, I’d hate to see her lose someone again. It’d be a stereotype if everyone was “strong”, this game embraces diversity. One could interpret your complaint to be that Kasmeer represents all women, or that women are an organization and as a representative Kasmeer makes them look bad.

The kiss was a reveal? I felt like I was hit over the head with their relationship during Tower of Nightmare. I feel like the kiss was to solidify Jory and Kasmeer as “people”, not just tag-along NPCs.. and maybe to squash any lingering doubts about them.

Every woman does not have to be, ‘Strong.’ However, as I said, this is the first time I’ve seen a blatant, negative-gender-stereotype in the writing, and I was a little disappointed. Over-Emotional women tend to dominate most games and media. Look at Jaina Proudmoore’s recent portrayal in World of Warcraft, though to be honest, in that case I don’t mind as her outbursts are justified and don’t -define- how she acts and behaves. Kasmeer has always been a very bubbly and emotional person (so yes, the kiss is in line with her character), but now every time someone see’s her, they’re going to think she’s ruled by her emotions, even though that hasn’t been the case at any other point in her story.

It only takes -one- case to ruin a character. Honestly at this point I kind of hope Marjory and Kasmeer get to take a nice, long vacation and just disappear from the Living Story for a good long while or perhaps forever. Give them a house somewhere in Divinity’s Reach where players can talk to them, and update their dialogue for the new Living Story content so they can voice opinions or even give hints. They’re a nice couple, so its the least that can be done for them story-wise, to have their happily ever after.

I’m still not seeing this “stereotype” you’ve managed to identify, please be more specific.

The Stereotype that women are more prone to emotional outbursts, being ruled by their emotions, being unreasonable when they get emotional, etc… Come on, its a common stereotype in media and literature. I’m not saying women cannot have or portray emotion without succumbing to this, but when it gets extreme, it falls into a stereotype.

often times I think that those kinds of fun facts should be kept to novels or interviews with the writers. It doesn’t necessarily have a place in the story.

So homosexuality belongs out of sight, should be placed in… lets say… a closet of sorts?

Yeah. I guess my opinion in this regards can be best expressed in bad 80s music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3G-X4K1DcM

Way to take my words out of context. Am I the only homosexual who’s trying to see the other side of the fence and look at the whole event in an unbiased and calm manner to see if there -are- any problems at all? I voiced my opinion. Hate it if you want, or stop halfway through reading to get angry and post a snarky reply. In case you’re that angry that someone could voice a dissenting opinion though and don’t feel like going back to read, I’ll repost why I feel that way below.

A video game is not a great medium for a Story. Players want to -play- a game, not watch a movie, or read a book. Because of this, content such as cut scenes and forced dialogue has to be kept short, so as not to interrupt the flow of gameplay. You can’t really get into the meat of a story because of this. A novel, a short story, etc… provides a much better medium. I would rather have read one about Marjory and Kasmeer than just had a simple scene that, contextually speaking, didn’t need to happen.

That kiss would have been -much- more appropriate in another cut scene after the fact, showing our heroes celebrating in a tavern somewhere, or at the refugee camps.

I doubt such a law exists in Cantha, they worship the same Six Gods as the rest of Humanity. @Tanith
Thank you

Yeah I know the lore behind the charr thing and I think it’s really interesting that they’re taking that road, it’s just not a very common or usual one. Most people in the U.S. are moderately to very religious, so it is a big risk to make such a game where the gods are absent or even nonexistent.

I don’t think its that odd. When Gods are present in a game, they -tend- to be killable, which I think is more offensive to the religious than the Gods being absent. Personally I’d love to know where the Six are and why they’ve gone silent. I suppose the absence of the Six helps Anet develop the other races though. It’d be a pretty big finger in the face to keep telling the Charr, “No Gods? We’ve got Six. Here, shake Dwayna’s hand. Don’t worry, she doesn’t bite.”
