Trying to decide on a PvP class

Welcome back to Guild Wars 2, most people tend to complain about classes for a couple of reasons.
1) They do not understand how their class works
2) They refuse to learn how to counter them (I say about 60% of the time it’s this)
3) A class is legit broken mechanic wise (I say about 35% of the time)

You should never pick a class based on the current flavor of the month. Last month (Early July) Rangers were the class that everyone was playing, the month before that it was Turrent Engie, the month before that it was DD Ele.

1- Warriors are not awful right now, they are shoe horned into an elite but they are not awful in comparison to other classes.

2- Thieves can destroy any class with high bursts, but there is a trade off… one mistake and they are dead. With high damage comes low survivability.

3-Not at all, I have a Necro that runs Minionmancer and She is my 2nd favorite. You have to learn to position your self behind your minions and aid them instead of playing the tank….

4-Eles can burst really hard, but again… high damage trade off is low survivability or in Eles case… you need to be quick to switching to water to heal back up.

5- Mesmers have a few issues:
if you interrupt them they are screwed
if you cast a reveal on them like “Sic Em” they become very easy to focus
if you are able to apply tons of continual condi you will have a down fight

6- Guardians are very good at applying tons of Burning and Blinding. Meditation guardian is still a thing. Again remember, high damage = low survivability.

7- Elite Specializations are a new trait line that when equipped will change the way you are treated in game by NPCS and how you are able to play your class. You will be given a new skill set to play (traps, wells, etc) a new weapon your class couldn’t use before (staff, warhorn, etc) and to my understanding, your class icon and name in hero panel will change to show the specializations name instead. You will NOT be able to use your new weapon, skillset and special abilities with out having that trait line equipped.

The best bit of advice I can give you since you’re a GW1 veteran is to dig through the Guild Wars 2 wiki and do some quick research. See what appeals to you and do a couple of Practice (formally known as Hot Join) matches and see how you like them.

Guild Wars 2 PvP, your armor, weapons, levels do not matter since they are auto scaled. Everything in your PvP Build Manager is what matters. That can be accessed in the Heart of the Mists by clicking the helmet icon at the top of your screen.

Remember, DO NOT PLAY A CLASS BECAUSE IT’S CLAIMED TO BE OP… YOU ARE NOT HELPING YOUR SELF OUT ANY BY DOING SO… JUST SHORT TERM GRATIFICATION WITH LONG TERM DISSAPOINTMENT.

Unless I missed something…. Ascended Stats = Legendary Stats….
You are not at an unfair advantage for using Ascended Stats….

With the current system of changing Ascended Stats via Mystic Forge, I’d imagine it would be cheaper and faster to stay with Ascended then going with Legendary.

I also, don’t see any where of Anet stating that will be the only Legendary Back Piece ever. I’m sure more will be added as time goes on and they will be for unique aspects as well.

Let’s not Turn Guild Wars 2 into Government Handout 2…..

I have already reported on this issue numerous times, within the pvp community you have two groups of people.

1) Don’t fix this issue until the game is “balanced” since it’s unfair to force to play.
2) Fix this now

Hopefully, I will have some feed back on this issue soon…if not hopefully it will be addressed by one of the developers.

Why am I getting random Ranked Games?

Can you tell us what you mean by “a few”?
How long have you been PvPing?
Is it possible that you have played some Paid Tournaments in the past? or Solor or Team Arena ques when they existed?

Fractal Reward Track

I believe that fractal rewards should be exclusive to fractals… If they were to implement this idea they would have to introduce a quest for PVE players to get Glorious Armor and a Vendor for both PVE and PVP players to buy mistforged weapons with just Gold.

I’d like the creation of a fractal reward track in pvp which enables us to choose a fractal skin at the end of the track.

I’ve done more than a 100 fractals and i’ve always wanted to have a fractal greatsword skin so i was wondering if it could be possible to create an alternative way to obtain those skins.

Speaking as a player, I feel it would be best if you quit playing GW2 for a while. Based on your posts recently, you have no interest or desire in playing the game, you have nothing to contribute to any discussion just bashing ANET and GW2 in general.

There is a difference about telling the truth and just being a jerk. Going to multiple threads and trashing people because the game is not the way you want it to be, is an example of being a jerk.

No one is telling you are not entitled to your opinion, but I am telling you that you need to stay on topic and keep your posts in a way that can be beneficial. You can still be negative while delivering a constructive approach on how to improve this.

Based on your past posts, you do not appear to have any interest in keeping things constructive, you just wish to bash ANET and GW2.

Example of a constructive negative post:
I do not like the current reward tracks because ANET doesn’t understand what we want. I think they should add _ or __ maybe ____ as reward tracks.
_ Would be neat because ________
_ Would give us something to earn towards.
_ Would give a chance to earn some of the things that PvE players have easy access too.

Example of a non constructive negative post:
ANET doesn’t care about us, i’m deleting my characters.

Remove pvp dailies

This thread has been addressed almost on a weekly basis.
As the dailies are not a perfect solution, they are a step forward from where they were. They do know that more needs to be done and hopefully they will balance out the dailies with the suggestions you guys have tossed out.

The Removing of Class Wins and replacing with X- Amount of Wins / Games played.

This has been brought up before about separate queues and what not. It’s a pretty heated discussion. Some people feel that we should only play Conquest and adding anything else ruins the game. A few others believe that there should be seperate queues but not for Ranked as that will increase the time in the queue way too long for Conquest.

Give it a few hours and I’m sure you will see what i mean.

I’m actually more content with a 2v2 or 3v3 Custom arena instead. All the Devs have to do is give us the tools to make these maps, implement rounds, add a turn-based Round Robin function so Spectators can enter the the map one at a time and we got ourselves another gamemode. Or at the very least, a map we’d like to play on occasion.

There are tools that the Devs can offer us to better our map making possibilities. Our crave for Dueling can be remedied with Dueling Servers but Trolls – bad sportsmanship players – hinders this experience. Especially for newbie players who genuinely want to duel and get better. Map makers need to assign more than one moderator to govern these servers.

If we get our 2v2 or 3v3 custom server gamemode with Rounds implemented and/or Round Robin entry, people would play it. They’d want leaderboards and would want it to have its own separate queue but hey, we’d at least have 2v2/3v3’s in the PvP scene.

Sorry for double post but I wanted to separate my posts on these two separate ideas.
The above ideas you stated are things that I and i believe gates have presented to the developers in our weekly reports. I know for a fact they got them and read them over and I know they are considering a couple of them. At the moment, everything is all hands on deck for Heart of Thorns.

Hopefully as things start to wind down with HoT development, we will be able to see the developers return to their perspective areas and give a little more TLC to their areas.

ANET does care about the community feed back; however, they are not going to act without seeing both sides of the issue. A lot of things over the last couple weeks have been added to the game based on community feed back. Yes, they are not exactly what we wanted for PvP but they are a step in the right direction.

Q's Deliberately Slow?

I don’t believe so, I’ve experienced extremely fast queues a few times, along the lines of 5-10 seconds max. However, I’ve also experienced 15-20 minute queues as well. Most of this is within Unranked, I generally only play ranked if i have a full party.

Can you give us some details?
What are you playing? Unranked or Ranked?
What time of day are you playing? Please include time zone….

Suggestion for PvP Event

PvP gambit would be interesting; however, it would have to be done in Unranked and Practice only.
Some things I thought of:
Crippled, everyone has cripple that can not be cured.
Super Sonic, Movement speed is increased by 50% for the whole match.
Mini Me!, Everyone is shrunken down to the size of minis
1 UP, Everyone is double in size
8-Bit, everything is 8-bit.

Could toss in a couple of bonuses to encourage people to play with those gambits.
Maybe:
+25% MF while in Heart of the Mists
+25% Rank Points
+25% Reward Track Points

Just an idea, what do you guys think and suggest?

It use to be a trend in PvP to fight naked, it wasn’t a form of sabotage or anything, it was used as a way of protest to show how annoyed people were over the PvP rank changes.

Birthdays coming up!

Meh… I’d rather see Birthdays become account bound with your oldest character being sent the gift. Remove the souldbound off of it and make it account bound.

1) Will encourage more people to play different races an characters without feeling guilty about deleting a character. You won’t feel guilty for trashing a Charr Ele for an Asura Ele because it’s your oldest character.

2) With it being account wide it’s more personal to you as a player then a character.

3) You will only be given 1 gift every year instead of 8-12 gifts every year so that gifts value will be a little higher. People may have liked Queen Jenna a little more if they were given 1 per account instead of 1 per character.

I personally think Year 3 gifts will be along the lines of:
1 Birthday Booster
1 Mini Taimi
1 New Title “Elder” or something like that since Y2 is “Veteran”
1 New Toy or Everlasting Tonic

I’m with you on TDM queue not sure why it was ignored when we asked for it way before SH was announced. There is no logic for it mixed with conquest pure favoritism.

ANet forgot about it?

Nah it was just pure favoritism.

Or since it was a beta and it was being used to test, maybe it will be added as well providing the separate queues on game modes is what they plan to keep.

“The Forum Specialists are a step forward, but they still don’t give us much insight into what the devs are actually thinking or doing at the time, and that feedback is precious to players. With no test server and very little back-and-forth between devs and players, each patch feels like a stab in the dark, and it really doesn’t have to be that way.”

We are forbidden to speak on behalf of ANET or state anything that can be considered concrete unless it’s public knowledge already. The forums specialist job is to keep the threads on the right track with ideas and constructive input, answer general questions in regards to their subject areas and pass along information to the development team.

For the most part, the emails we send are not directly responded to by a member of the dev team. It’s usually just “Got it” along with any answers to questions that they are willing to publicly answer.

The pvp community is being heard though, within the last 30-40 days you can go back through the dev notes and see things the community has suggested that been implemented in one way or another.

Why no new Ranger F ability?

Eh… I’d rather see Rangers obtain new pets then new F abilities.

The way the Pet Management window is set up, there is room to add 2 more pets to have the window balanced out with 6 pets on each row. The last row, currently only has 4.

Personally I say:

>.< … but I’m still stuck on some GW1 pets I’m sure there are animals not from GW1 people would rather have in GW2

I think something similar to presearing ascalon in Guild Wars 1 would be a good idea for Pvp.

Tiny little town, maybe done in a military academy theme ran by the Priests of Balthazar, all the mechanics are there and some npcs to explain how things work. Once you are ready to leave that town you are placed in a conquest map with other people who have NEVER played a pvp game before. Once the match is over, as long as you scored 5 points you are able to move on to the heart of the mists. If you do not score 5 points, you are kicked back to the academy and you have to start over.

Once this has been done at least once, you are able to go straight to the heart of the mists on any character.

If there are not enough players to fill out both teams, NPCs will take their place and they will just have a predefined route for A → B →C and the ability to attack the opposing team if they are within range.

just a hasty idea.. I’m sure there are tons of flaws and what not.

Just something to consider and expand upon idea wise or stir up some more talk.

NA you will have flares of competitive moments. You will trash talk each other and have a beer after a game. EU wise, the match continues even a month after it’s been over in game.

Would have to see the numbers to know more, but i do know that Queues have a tendency to be buggy….

Even before SH being added, Some people would be stuck in a 20 minute queue when the average time was 1 1/2 minutes. Don’t know what the cause of the bug is but it does happen.

For the most part, I’ve noticed all my SH games take 2 1/2 – 4 minutes queue time wise.

You do bring up an interesting point of a 4 way split in the pvp community though.

If they make us queue in the heart of the mists then they cant have seperate queues

If I have to order a milk shake at dairy queens lobby then they can’t have separate flavors, just the flavor i want. Do you not see the error in that?

Most effective task in Stronghold?

Premade wise, I tend to have a team roles pre-determined
1 Runs Supplies
1 Defends our gate
1 Roams Between Mid, Home and Enemy Gate
2 Escorts Door breakers

Keep spawning Door Breakers till the gates are down

Once both gates are down spawn Archers

Roamer should go with the 2 escorters to help clear out the NPCS to make killing the lord a lot easier. The one running supplies should pay attention to the mini map for chances to spawn heroes.

If the other team is being to much on offense, the roamer should rotate back home to help out.

To answer your question more directly, which of those roles best fits you?

If that particular game mode offends you too much, you are able to opt out of playing it.

Click the crossed swords at the top of your screen
Right Side of that window theres two boxes
Uncheck the one that says “Strong Hold”

Does ArenaNet have the intention to merge the Stronghold map in the same pool of matches of ranked queques?

Because no way I’ll keep playing the PvP if the queques are the same. Currently I’m leaving every ranked match in which the game tries to force me to play that PvE mode…

P Key -> Right Side of the window -> Uncheck Stronghold

Replace P with what ever key is bound to your pvp window
or just click the crossed swords icon at the top of the screen

As supreme said they cant punish leavers until they balance their matchmaking. Players shouldnt be forced to sit through a match when their team is all under lvl 30 while the other team is all seasoned 80s on broken builds. If they started forcing us to sit in these imba matches then more players would be pushed away from spvp

On the flip side of that coin, you can not hold anet responsible for fixing MMR and matchmaking in general if they can’t address the issue of players leaving. It’s a double edge sword for anet. Part of fixing match making is implementing some sort of punishment to discourage players from quitting. Even if they implements something like:

1 of each class only
+/- 3-5 Levels of your current level
50/50 Gender of IRL players
Balanced Intellectual and Economic status
Same operating systems for both teams

No its not a double edge sword. Punishing leavers is very minor compared to matchmaking actually being functional. Before a punishment could even be implemented anet would first have to address the core issues such as class stacking and player levels. Once these are resolved there would be less players leaving during matchmaking. Yes there would still be the players rage quitting but once matchmaking is rightfully balanced there would be no excuse for the players to quit meaning anet could rightfully punish them for those actions without hurting others.

If anet was to implement punishing before matchmaking; then the players who have valid reasons to leave the match would be getting punished and pushed away from spvp. Players would be forced to sit in a match whos fate is decided before the match starts or leave and take punishment. Basically it would serve as a lose lose situation sometimes which is something no one would enjoy.

I don’t believe one should be added before the other.

I believe that both systems should be implemented at the same time with the same patch.

Let it run its course for a week or two, let them gather data and opinions from the community. If it’s working, keep it in place, if it’s not working, disable the punishment while the next MMR fix is rolled out which would have the punishment feature enabled at the same time.

Well yeah i think anyone would rather have both issues fixed at the same time but thats also assuming anet is capable of doing both simultaneously :P

I think the bigger question, is the community going to be willing to wait the extra time for the developers to have both working… And would they be willing to be the test monkeys to ensure the MMR formula is working as intended since it can not reliably be tested in house with just a couple employees.

For the most part we all agree on what has to be done, it’s a matter of how it will be rolled out and the best way of doing it that we differ on :P

How do I leave an unranked match once inside?

Okay then. Thanks for explaining. Still, if they’d let me leave at the beginning before it started like I wanted to, the team would have had a full 5, as I got a phone call from work while in there and couldn’t play the match, anyway.

Even if you clicked the wrong button, you should have noticed that you were in a queue for something. With this particular situation it wouldn’t have mattered if it was for Ranked or Unranked since those are your only two options via buttons on the menu.

This is all presuming you meant to do Practice, formally known as “Hot Join”.

The idea of adding players to replace people that leave has been purposed before, i’m just stuck in the same place as most of you are…. waiting for an answer

Have hope though, a lot of the communities ideas were implemented this week for pvp.

For the record, not sure if it was implied or not.

Practice, formally known as Hot Join has not been removed but had it’s button removed. Players can still participate in Practice by going to the Browser in the Heart of the Mists. He has crossed swords over his head and has been there for a very long time.

Beta event highlighted matchmaking fail again

LoL does matchmaking better than any game I have ever played even if you don’t consider the difficult to implement League system(because it requires a large player base), new players will always be in the same “MMR bracket” although that is not quite the way it works.
Veteran moba players or smurfs will very quickly promote out of this invisible tier and legimate new players will stay there for quite some time.
This sort of implementation is relatively simple to implement in comparison and is a must for a growing PvP community.

Let’s not have LoL’s MMR’s system…

1 ) Encourages win streaks to promote your self out of the bottom 90%
1 A ) The promotion of rage quitting since there is no punishment system atm
1 B ) Toxicity levels within the community will nearly triple for new players who make even the tiniest of mistakes.

2 ) LoLs system is done on a team ranking not a solo ranking. This would work in a Team Queue situation of say 5v5 premades; however, this will not work very well in a solo queue situation since your team mates are constantly changing and their MMR will vary. LoLs #1 flaw in their formula is the time spent in queue. The way LoL is set up, the formula would rather get you into a game quickly then finish putting you in an ideal match up that “favors a 50/50 chance of winning”.

I would even go as far as to state that LoL has more threads complaining about their system then GW2’s by 2-3 folds.

GW2’s system does need to be refined a lot more, but LoLs system is not one to emulate…. especially with GW2 mechanics and rewards in mind.

There has to be a practical point of acceptance for players to merge into the next phase of game play. There was some data mining by that_shaman with some interesting tidbits of information. I won’t post the link, but i’m sure you can find it with ease on reddit.

Providing the data mining is 100% accurate, i’m sure one can put that information in conjunction with this change together to see what’s going on

I’m not arguing with you, I’m stating what is happening so you understand what you deem to be a priority is not something as simple as cracking a whip and have it uploaded.

Heart of Thorns is being developed, if its not a QoL or Heart of Thorns Related it’s basically a spare time project. With it being a spare time project it’s when ever the developers get to it. Just because the developers get to it and finish it doesn’t mean it’s a straight upload. It has to go through the QoL team which is working on testing the HoT and other QoL content.

There are numerous hands that project has to go through before it is uploaded.

The basis of your whole argument is that " years of waiting for this feature and it’s still not implemented, I’m no programmer, but I’m pretty sure it won’t take that much time to have such measley option, it’s in every other MMO! "

I can argue that Polymock is more important than open world dueling and is the basis of this game as it was a fun time killer in Guild Wars 1.

We can go in circles around priority and importance but it comes down to point 3.

1) 2012 + 3 = 2015
2012 + 4 = 2016
The current year is 2015.

2) It’s not a priority and would require a lot of changes and newbie safe guards.

3) There are a lot of things on the list as well, most of them I’m sure is a higher priority then open world dueling. All resources at ANET is being focused on Heart of Thorns. Unless it’s going to be added as a Quality of Life patch or as Heart of Thorns Content, the chances are it’s a spare time project when the developers feel like it.

I’m sorry you’re dissapointed but that’s the way it is.

It’s no longer EZ mode idle and spam 2, I’ll give you that much. But, it’s not a dead class by any means. I’m having fun running weapon set ups like:
Long Bow/ Short Bow
Short Bow/ Axe + Warhorn
Long Bow/ Sword + Axe

The only major difference I’ve noticed is that Ranger has to actually work a little more when it comes to killing mesmers and thieves. Before 1 sic’ em is all you needed in conjunction with Rapid Fire.
