I really like the staff and I think they look aesthetically better than a random greatsword but my build jusy functions much better with GS
I’ve been doing the chambers and GS trumps staff there since I’m using more of a power phantasm build rather than a condi one (iwarlock is also useless soloing since I have 3 phantasms up and only myself to give conditions)
I bought 2 Kasmeer staff skins though.
GS is great for tagging (CoF p2) and for AoE (…CoF p2). However Staff is for utility, boss fights aswell can be used in melee without damage reduction and still grant tons of buffs to allies, gain all the buffs from allies and supports with signet of inspiration for total OP-NESS for the whole team
Read my last post btw – it’s power based, NOT condition based. Also with 20/20/0/30/0 you can trait staff and GS what ever you need. Just switch your weapons and adapt to the situation. Mesmer can do this well, they require all the weapons they got. Except Torch :o (PvE)

I wouldn’t say something such offending against the condition staff if I wouldn’t have tested it myself.

The true bad sad fact is, that the direct damage increase you get from zerker outdamages the condition damage increase you get from a full malice build (I had 2500 condition damage). It does not matter how much % of your damage is conditional. It does only matter wich increases the total damage more – and thats a zerker build. Also 33% of your aas have no condition damage applied, only vulnerability (wich is power based).

The iWarlock is the most power based phantasm we have. He has the highest possible ratio based on power and crit damage. On a condition build he deals less damage than a clone wich is about 1-3k based on condition on the enemy. However I enjoy the 10-15k’s more when I face a dungeon boss or 25k against dwayna. Hf with your conditions to catch up there.

The only damaging condition here is poison. And the power damage part of the CS is much higher and does its sexy 4-8k power based. And you will deal 1-2k and see every 4th tic pro poison … seems legit.
Also to mention:
Conditions are just a nice addon for the damage in PvE. To focus on them however is a big mistake.

Dont forget the skipping :P Best case would be swamp and then harpy. First you get Mossman axe, oneshot the champs at harpy frac then port up to endboss :P
I still need to find a video that shows how to port past the 2nd set of harpies after the golem. I also heard that it can bug out the last boss too if you skip?
if you skip and don’t trigger the raving asura talking sequence (i think) it bugs out.
You have to attack the last harpy at least once to trigger the “the groups has approached the harpies” status. Now leave the harpy and kill the boss.

So I got a stack with every kill when I use A/B + A/C and still got battle with A/B + D. There aren’t any good sigils anyway for mesmers.
Pretty ok for PvP, WvW, but wasted in PvE.
I like the idea infact that we need a move speed signet. But to say it in a single sentence:
Signet of Inspiration now only grants swiftness when out of combat
aaaaaand we’re happy.
I used to main a condi mesmer, even in PvE, and I was never once kicked out of a party because I was using a staff.
I guess they kicked you because of the condition mesmer part rather than the staff itself. Staff is a power, not condition weapon (iW).
btt: The staff is a good PvE choice.
PvE Phantasm Build weapon quality:
Perfect weapons: Sword, Focus
Good weapons: Pistol, Staff
Situational weapons: Greatsword, Scepter
Do just use for cloak skipping weapons: Torch
There will be no reason to kick you, the warlock deals en solo 8k, dungeons 12k and at world bosses up to 25k per attack. It’s the highest aviable DpS we got and once you got 3 of them you outdamage any other class in single target.
I guess you play a phantasm build hm? Anything else isn’t that great at PvE anyway.

Those are the first actually really good designed weapons in the whole game
In general, the weapon designers are doing terrible in this game. I cried so many times. Like there are acutally 2-3 good looking Swords in the whole game. Even the legendaries are ugly in general.
Create new weapons with quality – the current one are very bad made. One of the biggest negative points about this game – bad weapon design.
What stats do traveler give you except speed? Tought they are pretty worthless in combat :s
ruby orbs? grant overall awesome stats since phantasms won’t benefit from other passives.

I would add the iDisenchanter to the “Rarely used, but still used for some specific encounter” like sometimes in TA when you lack of condition remover or also against the permabuffed golem in CoE. If you got 3 of them the boss will never recive any protection nor anything else. Preventing protection alone gives the team a damage boost of 50% in trade of 3 damage phantasms from you. Pretty nice imo.

btt: As for sigils you should go for stack/battle + battle. Nothing is compareable to 6 stacks might, it’s about a 8% damage increase for you and your phantasms. Two stacking sigils make you weak until they are full and you (probably!?) gonna switch them with battle weapons. I feel ok with stack/battle + battle. While killing 25 foes i already have my 6 stacks perma might but its pretty interesting to doublestack, never tought about it.
The Scepter has a worse dps than the GS actually, don’t underestimate the GS that much. It also is more single target based wheras you pick the GS for the AoE. Staff is more useful in general but the GS makes a great job in CoF p2 for example. In almost every situation there:
There is never a “better weapon for everything” – at lest not in the mesmer pool. They are all situational and I’m happy to be able to use them all in certain situations.

Edit: @ Durend: very good post, I hope everyone reads it clearly. It tells exactly the flaws of shatter builds and the adventages of phantasm builds.
I also want to mention that the inspiration traits are worth getting 30 points into, since there are so many good traits that can be easily swapped around if reflection is not needed, if heal is needed, if condition removal is needed, if phantasm health is needed (aoe). Most of the time phantasms regenerate their hp if they don’t die due the passive, but it’s again some forgotten passive too …

Viable in the context of PvE means “a good idea”. Just because it works doesn’t mean it’s worth using otherwise the answer to every thread about viability would be yes. I think the only Mesmer build that wouldn’t work for PvE would be a condition sceptor/torch build.
Or no brainer builds :P There are a lot of them xD. I guess viable means more like “is compareable with the casual phantasm build in damage and utility / support” aswell “doesn’t annoy your team more than helping”.

“just use X” is allways a bad advice. It’s what the goverment does Do something and don’t think about what you are doing and if there is something better. There are so many ppl doing it like this so it must be the best way. WRONG! Aoe shouts that convert condi’s to boons = worthless

0-20-20-0-30 has no dps (even though osicat uses it in his heavy shatter 3.0 build) (awesome build btw)
shatter builds don’t need and is in fact wasting condi damage ( even though we have traits to support condi on shatter)That cleared that up.

The answer is simple. If you use pistol: 10/30. If you use sword 20/20. Talking about offhand. What do you pick more often? Also beeing on illusion trait means you have reduced shatter abilities, so F3 has lower cd with makes 20/20 more attractive.

To be honest – tickling was a serious method of torture in the dark age. You are able to die due the damage to your loungs. There was also the method to put salt on your body while goats where licking it off wich tickles and slowly removes the skin wich has been salted again until infections and painful death was the result …

I doubt it. Since I like the playstyle of the mesmer and therefore it’s more fun to play a mesmer than anything else. I don’t know why you play this game, but if it’s not fun you desire i really start to understand your decisions.
If you really want to get real about it…….make a guardian. Guardians just make pve easy.
There is no 5 man same class party that is better than any different classes combination. Guards are like something between warrior and mesmer. Good damage and plenty of utility. However I’ve never seen a Guardian clean conditions efficient or stack vulnerability so good aswell remove boons. And I guess I don’t have to mention a almost 200k passive damage elite, do I? Every class has it’s + and -. But Guard > Mesmer is just as stupid as Class X > Class Y.
If you’re using full rampagers, then I retract my wet noodle statement.

Are you saying that gear that is full offensive stats hits like a feather? That just doesn’t hold water on the most basic levels of common sense.
Full rampagers isn’t that great to be honest. In general direct damage deals about 2-4 times as much damage as condition damage, depending on allies and enemies. So everyone goes full zerker wich makes sense. So should you do for shatter builds if they are focused on F1 and not F2. However any shatter build is traiting some condition damage passive aswell F2. But now it’s about you to go for the crappy condition damage in pve wich is in the mesmers case just confusion or just stay focused on power and zerker and trait F3 to be a serious damage dealer.
The passed weekend I played a full condition shatter mesmer to learn more about our class. I had 2400 condition damage and still dealt like 25%-50% of a power build. The highest confusion tick was about 8k but just once and then it disappeared and left me with cd’s.
Zerker Mesmer – maybe kitten – but 0 condition damage – plz. (PvE)

Not really. You wont get 6 stacks permanently wich you will have with battle. Also you wont be nonestop aaing. Utility skills, interrupt, summoning, dodge …
Shatter builds are also pretty bad in PvE because they usually take utility slots for mirror images or decoy. However the team is much better with a mesmer that is able to use feedback, nullfield or mantras or even a portal.
A build who forces you to use certain utility skills is simply a bad build. And shatter without additional clone production is just … well … a weak phantasm build or a single clone shatterer.

I never talked about traiting trashsword … but cutting is worth a try.
Just double the speed of the projectile and the animation of the chain and its ok. More clones make it even more useful to keep this weapon for bombing.
Well as for me I go 20/20/0/30/0 and then 100 power are about 4% damage. If I daze something with sword 4, F3, or mantra there is a global +5% for 10 sec. You can even start with 2 clones and F3 for 10% and if you interrupt even 13% or 16%. Most classes have to slowly build up vulnerability and the mesmer gives a nice starting stack up to the others got their stacks.
5% additional damage for 10 sec equals 15-20k damage in a party with 5 members. If you count this to the “personal” (passive) damage I bet it’s pretty even with the +3% – +9% from illu trait. Just that I also got a sexy additional +17.25% phantasm damage aswell a 3rd illusion trait wich can be even more useful than any damage source since (imo) utility >>> damage.
I could be wrong too about the “meta mesmer”. But now I want to know it

There is no "standard". Ppl call their own build "meta" to feel protected against arguments.
Also 10/30/0/20/10 is definitly not meta, nor a good desicion to build *imo*. It seems like a sword/sword + sword/pistol build? Also I guess it’s supporting phantasms. So why throw away +17.25% phantasm damage and +2% damage and if well played plenty of vulnerability for ... +3% - +9% damage for yourself?

It’s not like I don’t use the pistol my friend. But I went away from it, slowly. I used it all the time but after I’ve realized that there are better traits especially for the ultra waisted 25 in duelling I’ve just … put it “away”. With sword traiting you simply trait your main and offhand and don’t have to invest any more. I won’t give away dominion 15 at all costs. So I kinda forced my self into this.
But why do you need a 1200 range aggro tool even if they are speard thing? o.O
Sword with Dom 15 is more rewarding than the pistol because of its line daze.
Sword #4 is 900, Pistol #5 is 1200. Pistol bullet will bounce around while Sword won’t since it’s only a straight line projectile. Pistol is much better for pulling mobs for a LoS tactic. All it requires is one block/evade for iSwordsman to fail where iDuelist has 8 attempts/projectiles. If mob is running around iSwordsman will run around chasing the guy while iDuelist will keep unloading as long as he’s within 1200. Also, because of this I can summon iDuelist in safe spots without worrying about them coming too close and getting killed. On paper sword offhand might sound better while in reality pistol is much more practical and reliable. This is why I much prefer pistol offhand than the sword.
Don’t get me wrong, I still do use sword offhand and it’s good weapon but only in specific situations such as lupi in Arah where that extra block can be a difference between living or dying.
The mention it once again. Traited pistol makes it pretty ok. However either traited or untraited, the sword has more benefits from Dom 15 and this was my message.

My main used to be an Asura Guardian, but ever since I tried the Mesmer I fell in love with the class. I have always leaned more towards spellcasters in general, anyway.
I love the Sylvari armor and how the dyes blend! I also thought the lightning catcher back item fit pretty well with a Mesmer.
Best outfit since about 10 pages … Really love it, gj!! <3 (And I rarely say that somethign looks really good ;D)

I was on this “journy” too with the 15/30/0/10/15. Back then I tested +4% mantra damage vs mantra heal and surprisingly the mantra heal won. It’s really incredible 2k heal aoe and I couldn’t image something better togeter with Mantra of Pain especially vs mobs like Subject Alpha. I also saved plenty of kitten from Mossman, it’s a great heal I really underestimated it.
To cut the long story short: I prefer 30 in inspiration over everything else. The traits there are just too powerful to ignore – my opinion / my playstyle ^^.
So I became 15/20/0/25/10 first, to have the illusion damage, then I realized I could simply give myself a bit power and 2 new traits so I went to 20/20/0/30/0. It reflects my playstile perfectly, but I’m sure I’m gonna test some illusion trating post patch
Dominion 15 is pretty strong imo and instead of wasting the last 5 points somewhere I better invest them into 20 for a semigood trait. Thats also the reason why I personally just use the sword. It’s harder to use but with dom. 15 it’s more rewarding than the pistol because of its line daze. However I just can agree what colesy says: 10/30/0/30/0 and traiting pistol won’t make it worth going for dom. 15+ and vice versa.

60s worth of single iDuelist damage:
no PH, 7000*60/7.5 = 56.0k (933/sec)
w/ PH, 7000*60/6.5 = 64.6k (1077/sec)That’s 15% more DPS. Do not underestimate PH.
1. theory – there are plenty of situations where a phantasm dies after one attack, iDuelist even during sometimes
2. 17.25% more damage from dominion seems to be more useful, especially if 1. happens

I could argue now that we just can have 3 phantasms but that would be totally wrong in practice.
Phantasms die and you will have yours up thats true. It seems very viable with this results.
If they don’t die 20/20/0/30/0 seems better, but normally they will die, especially when the target dies (elite mobs).
Hm it also depends on the weapon wearing, for example 3 phantasms with a staff, gs, ohsword, scepter isn’t desirable since you will destroy them anyway.
Some phantasms have too long cd even with doubletrait. And what do you have doubletraited? Sword and Focus, so actually just sword means swordsman since focus has a 25 sec cd (-40% =15).
So you can summon 2 swordmen, 1 X, 2 swordmen, 1 X. Not bad to be honest, but I would never give up my vulnerability or the 3rd inspiration trait. I even would like to have a 4th one snif
