Guild Hostile Takeover...power gone!

I mean, I dont understand how they can demote you, the creator. It was from my understand that no matter if someone is the same rank, there is always someone who is considered the guild leader and hence can not be demoted or kicked, even by people of the same rank as him.

I’m not sure that’s true. According to the wiki, Leaders are able to demote others of the same rank, even someone who was the original guild founder. The OP’s story seems to suggest that he made the mistake of promoting the two leaders of the other guild to Leaders of his guild, and that’s how they conducted the hostile takeover.

To the OP, I can only offer my sympathies and echo what Deified suggested; NEVER, EVER, promote anyone to the Leader rank other than yourself, unless you absolutely trust that person and know their character to be an upright one. Many people love power and authority, but very few have the wisdom to use it fairly and responsibly.

I hope Zhaitan isn't dead

Zaxares.5419

I highly doubt that Joko would consent to becoming Zhaitan’s Champion, simply based on what we know of him from GW1. He’s immensely prideful and doesn’t like being inferior to anyone, which suggests that unless Zhaitan was able to physically/mentally bend Joko to his will, Joko would never consent to allowing Zhaitan to rule over him. It COULD happen, but given that Joko’s Bone Palace is far, far away from the sea coast, it’s not likely that Zhaitan’s influence could reach that far.

I do think it’s more feasible that Zhaitan could make a return one day, however. If he is truly a physical manifestation of an innate force in the world, all he needs is time. Eventually, death (or undeath) will build up to a level high enough for him to regain consciousness, form a new body, and rise to menace the world again.

Sons of Svanir: Women depicted, but...

Zaxares.5419

You know, I actually don’t know whether the Sons of Svanir view Jormag as a Spirit or not. Their relationship with the Icebrood, at least what I’ve seen so far (and to be fair, I’m not very far in the game at all), seems to be a bit ambiguous. If you speak to one of the Sons in Hoelbrak, he’s adamant that they do not worship Jormag; they worship Dragon. To a Son of Svanir, that’s a distinct difference. They revere Dragon as the ultimate predator, the greatest Spirit of the Wild, and the Elder Dragons like Jormag and Zhaitan are simply dragons in as much the same way that normal minotaurs are to the Minotaur Spirit. However, other Norn are adamant that there is no Dragon Spirit, and the Sons of Svanir are either self-deluded, or deluded by Icebrood shamans, which is where the animosity between the two factions comes from.

It may be that some Sons of Svanir truly believe that there is a Dragon Spirit and are seeking to emulate it by following the teachings of the Icebrood shamans. Or maybe some are simply using the Dragon Spirit philosophy as an excuse to gain power. I think it just goes to show that the Sons of Svanir are not, in and of themselves, a unified force politically and theologically.

But whatever the reason, I’m certain that once they become corrupted by Jormag’s power and become Icebrood, a Son of Svanir’s goals align with that of his Master, and their previous beliefs cease to matter.

Do food effects stack?

As Cantaloupe said, you may only have one food effect on you at a time. You may also only have one “item” effect (represented by a wrench icon on a pale blue background) granted by potions or sharpening stones/maintenance oil/tuning crystals on you at a time, although you can have the food and the item both active at the same time.

Boosters can also be used at the same time as both previous effects, and I believe (though I haven’t tested it) that you can have multiple Boosters active at the same time.

Dye hoarding: Sell them or use them?

Zaxares.5419

It’s up to you, but if you want a higher monetary return, it’s better to sell them. The price of Unid’ed Dyes is crazily high, so even if you were after a specific expensive dye, you’d come out ahead just selling the unid’ed ones and buying the one you want.

Personally I’m opening the unid’ed dyes I find, but that’s because I have 5 characters and I want to get a good spread of dyes on each character. If I get a duplicate, it goes to another character. When it gets to the stage that most of the dyes I’m getting are already unlocked on my characters, then I’ll switch strategies to selling instead.

To add to this, if you’re after Wool Scraps, the numerous bandit camps in Brisban Wildlands (aim for the level 21+ areas) drop large amounts of Worn Garments that can be salvaged for Wool. Take care not to get caught inside the camp when a boss spawns, however!

RNG is RNG, I’d say. I haven’t been keeping track, but my stockpiles of Cloth and Leather have been growing at roughly the same pace as each other. (They’re both outstripped by Wood and Metal though, since I get much more of those harvesting from nodes. As a result, I usually vendor any metal or wood items I get rather than salvaging them, unless they’re Masterwork or Higher, then they go on the TP.)

Armorsmith stuck because wool scraps are rare

in Crafting

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

Yeah, something sounds wrong with the OP’s story. Are you salvaging all level 20 – 35 light armor, Bryan? The vast majority of cloth scraps come from salvaging those plus the salvage items that Khisanth mentioned. You will also get some from Bags (particularly those dropped by Bandits), but I wouldn’t rely on Bags solely to get Wool Scraps.

Bandits are probably the easiest to get Wool Scraps from. They drop Bags which sometimes give Wool Scraps (I’d say about 30 – 40% of the time), but they also tend to drop lots of Worn Garments which salvage into 1 – 3 Wool Scraps each (on rare occasions they’ll also give Jute Scraps, but I don’t mind since Jute Scraps sell for quite a bit). Cleaning a couple of the Bandit Camps in Brisban Wildlands should give you a decent amount of Worn Garments to salvage.

It may be because you are moving the camera by holding right mouse, which bafflingly is also used to select a mob so if your pointer is over a mob when you move the camera you are likely to select them.

That may be why it’s happening! I do use the RMB to move the camera around, and I experience all those issues the others have mentioned. I’ll have to pay more attention to whether or not I get these issues when I’m panning the camera around during battle. If true, hopefully we can petition ANet to include an option to remove RMB targeting.

There aren’t that many recipes that require Chili Peppers, and to be honest, there are so many different recipes that a budding Chef can EASILY level past the range where Chili Peppers are a level-appropriate ingredient without needing to use them. In fact, I believe there’s a Chef guide out there that takes you from 0 – 400 without using any Chili Peppers at all.

That said, I do agree with you that Chili Peppers are abnormally hard to get. Despite playing from launch day and bringing 5 different characters through the starter Charr areas, I only have 30 or so Chili Peppers. (In comparison, I have over a stack of Vanilla Beans!) I think Chili Peppers need a tweak similar to what Vanilla Beans got, where they drop in quantities of 3 – 5 instead of 1 – 2 like they do now.

No.

As my Sylvari (Necromancer!) put it, “The Nightmare Court make Mother sad… And anything that makes Mother sad can’t be right!”

That is some bizzare logic, but fitting for a relatively young race.

I roleplay my Sylvari with a very child-like mentality. Physically she may be fully grown, but she still tends to see the world through a child’s outlook, which has resulted in some amusing RP sessions.

“So I told this man in the Busted Flagon yesterday that I was a jeweler, and he asked if I wanted to see his family jewels. I said I’d love to, but before we could go back to his room, my friend Velda (she’s a Norn) walked over and grabbed him between the legs. His face went all funny, and she told him to stay away from me. When I said that he was just going to show me his family jewels, she said, “Trust me, they weren’t great specimens.” I’m still not sure what all that was about, but Velda said she’d explain some other time."

Zaxares.5419

The other problem is enemy numbers/power scaling up due to a greater number of players in the area, even though those players might not actually be participating in the event. For example, last night I was passing through a town when an event popped up to defend the town from Risen. OK, not a problem. I move to the circle and prepare to defend it, but the event threw a HUGE number of Risen at me per wave, about 8 – 10 of them, and I and a second player wasn’t able to kill them all fast enough.

Now, I’ve done this event completely solo before, and during that occasion, each wave consisted of only 2 – 3 Risen, a much more manageable number. The difference this time was that there were a number (4 or 5, I believe) of other players who were standing in a safe spot inside a town building near the event. Perhaps they were AFK or roleplaying, I’m not sure which.

I want to make it clear that I in no way blame these players for not participating, but the fact that the game automatically went “Oh hey, there’s 5 – 6 players in the area, so I’ll throw 10 Risen at them per Wave!” despite the fact that the other players did nothing to help is ridiculous. The game should only adds mobs/speed up respawns if it knows for sure that the extra players are actually participating. This means that, in the case of my event, it should only have sent me and the other player 4 – 5 Risen UNLESS the other players jumped in and started attacking the Risen/healing the players fighting them, whereupon the game detects that there are more active players and scales up the number of subsequent waves appropriately.

In the case of respawns, this should also be taken into account so that the game doesn’t up the respawn rate of enemies in a cave just because another player is running past the area or is standing in the mouth of the cave.

Warbands and Charr Love

Zaxares.5419

@Konig: Ah, didn’t know that about the multiple fahrars per Legion. I was under the impression that each Legion only had one Primus, and by extension, there was only one fahrar. Perhaps Primus is simply the title given to the Charr in charge of a particular fahrar, and there could be multiple Primuses (Primes?) at any one time.

Noted about the parent-child relationship too. I was basing my answer off my experiences in the Sorcerous Shaman Sire path, where it seems that Clement Forktail regretted not playing more of a role in the Charr PC’s life. Of course, this may be his personal attitude and not indicative of Charr as a whole. It does seem though that, based on overheard NPC conversations around the Black Citadel, that Charr parents (or perhaps civilian ones, at least) do remain a large part of their children’s lives.

@Penny: That’s what I thought too, but during the Sorcerous Shaman path, a Flame Legion shaman confronts Clement Forktail and accuses him of betraying his warband to the Iron Legion. Clement responds by saying that he should have remained loyal to his Legion first, and not followed his warband to the Flame Legion out of loyalty to them. Warbands do fracture, after all; there are leadership challenges, deaths of old members and new members are occasionally inducted into the warband, but the Legion remains constant.

Ok there are exceptions, there always is, but it still stands that MOST (hence not all) species would not attempt such things. And granted dogs will pretty much hump anything. Guess I stand somewhat corrected lol.
I will still say it is more unusual than common though.

Of course. I don’t think anybody was arguing that it was more common for members of different species to be attracted to species other than their own (you’d have serious reproduction issues if that were the case!) It’s also obvious that most NPCs of the various races are attracted to their own kind, since examples of interracial relationships are hard to find throughout the game. At the same time though, there is ample evidence to indicate that cross-species relationships do occur from time to time.

There’s not really enough evidence to state that Sylvari are more attracted to non-Sylvari, however. There appear to be plenty of paired Sylvari in the Grove and throughout the Sylvari personal stories, for one thing.

Warbands and Charr Love

in Lore

Zaxares.5419

That’s an interesting question… I was under the impression that cubs were raised to be loyal to their Legion first, their Warband second, and to the Charr third. But you’re right, there are examples in-game of Charr (usually gladiums) who have switched Legions when they join a new Warband.

I believe that each Legion has its own fahrar, but which fahrar the parents they send their cub to probably depends more on location than anything else. A Blood Legion mother serving in the Iron Citadel would probably send her cub to the Iron Legion fahrar simply because of its close proximity; she doesn’t need to take extended time off to travel back to the Blood Legion lands, and she can also continue to keep an eye on her child. The lore is a bit sketchy on whether Charr parents continue to maintain relations with their children after they join the fahrar, but based on the Sire story arc for Charr characters, I’d say that the answer is usually “yes”.

Charr couples, however, are a different story. Some Charr, particularly those living outside Charr lands, probably live in nuclear family-like structures to compensate for the lack of the fahrar and other Charr social support groups. Among Charr living in their homeland, it’d probably be a case of “stay together as long as we like each other”, since the fact that cubs are sent to the fahrar means that there’s no reason to stay together for the cub’s sake if they can’t stand each other.

Good post, Syntax, but I think the scenario you gave in the second example for Market B is not quite accurate. Assuming we’re talking about materials or some other highly traded commodity, it’s highly unlikely that no other seller posts new gizmos for sale, which means it’s just about impossible to completely buy out stock of an item without posting buy walls (which falls under market manipulation which I agree with you is unhealthy for a market).

The other half of the equation is that while price bubbles do form, they always collapse in the end because there is a point beyond which players simply will not pay the listed price. When this point is reached, no gizmos sell, and eventually somebody will list their stock for less, and then somebody will undercut that person etc. until eventually the price stabilises again, probably at or near the original 47 copper price, or a bit higher depending on available supply.

Of course, don’t forget that ANet could also step in at any time and adjust item drop rates if they deem prices for a particular item to be unreasonable. (They did exactly that with Vanilla Beans. I expect the only reason they have not done so with Charged Lodestones or other rare mats is because they simply don’t want to have too many people running around with Legendaries or super-expensive Exotics.)

Norn Relationships?

in Lore

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

The issue of whether forging a legend based on infamy is just as desirable as one forged through heroic deeds is a very intriguing question, and what I know of the Norn through literature and in-game experiences with Norn NPCs tends to be inconclusive. For example, the story on the ANet blog about the young hunter who studies under Snow Leopard in order to murder the Norn huntress who killed his father over an unpaid gambling debt shows that while all of the shamans acknowledge that the huntress’s action was out-of-line, nobody would do anything about it. Likewise, despite the fact that slaying a sleeping foe is not considered an honorable act by any Norn, the Norn nevertheless honor the young hunter for avenging his dead father.
As such, it seems that although the Norn may disapprove of certain actions or behaviour, they nonetheless extend a grudging respect and even reverence for particularly vile or despicable Norn. In that sense, Norn criminals or villains attain immortality not that different from honored Norn like Jora or Asgeir, although most Norn still value “a good legend” over “a disgusting legend”. Nonetheless, when it comes to making one’s mark on history, it seems that some Norn will be desperate enough to go to any length to be remembered. A Norn who is infamous for being a lazy, cowardly wretch who betrayed his own brother may still be remembered throughout the ages as someone that Norn children should not aspire to, thus living forever in the tales of the skaalds.

The only sub-culture among the Norn that seems to be universally reviled are the Sons of Svanir, and only because they have more or less rejected the Spirits of the Wild in favour of worshipping Jormag/Dragon.

Here’s one good example of a bird attempting to mate with a human: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6A7uFSbRJ5w

Now, you could argue that that incident was an anomaly because the kakapo in question (“Sirocco”) was originally raised in captivity before being released into the wild and may have imprinted onto humans, but there have also been recorded instances of wild dolphins trying to initiate sexual contact with humans (both males AND females). I’m sure that if I did enough research, I’d turn up examples of other species who initiated sexual play with humans on their own accord too.

Of course, none of these encounters would ever lead to viable offspring, but it just goes to show that there ARE unusual sexual tastes among creatures other than humans.
