If mats were easy to gather a bot or a guild could never corner the market, someone could always undercut, they would too. If a guild is buying all the mats I farm I will continue to farm, said guild could only buy so many mats from several farmers before the guild would go broke. They can’t sell lower than they paid me for them, or they would still go broke, just more slowly.

Blah, people hate on farmers, but farmers provide the mats that people buy on the tp. If all of the farmers were to give up in disgust; the supply of mats on the tp would eventually run out. Then people would be reduced to gathering their own mats to make things for themselves. No one would be willing to sell their mats, because no one would have extras to sell.

I posted something similar before, and a misguided individual replied that a virtual world would have unlimited resources.

Except, someone has to gather those resources, and if no one is gathering them to sell, a buyer has no access to them. Running out is quite possible, especially when anet has events that use specific mats to make event items.

Farmers, especially when there are a lot of separate farmers in competition, keep prices low. If Joe wants to sell 200 mats for 1s, and I want to sell my mats quickly, I have to undercut Joe, or wait for his 200 mats to get sold.
Now make mats a total pain to gather, make them annoying or time consuming to collect. At that point you will have very few who think the time spent gathering is worth the gold they get from selling. So supply on the tp lessens, there are fewer suppliers total. The very few suppliers can charge whatever they wish, because customers are desperate enough to pay exorbitant prices to avoid having to gather the mats themselves.

This is why I like item farmers. If there are many, many separate farmers, not several bots nor a guild working together, but individuals free to compete for speedy business: then mats will be cheap on the trading post. Casual farmers, if you will.

If their are no casual farmers, just hardcore farmers who don’t bother to compete, then you have high tp prices. The measures used so far don’t dissuade hardcore farmers, and farming guilds, and certainly don’t discourage bots, they wreck people who would dabble in farming though. Dabblers are the impatient ones who sell things cheaply. I want casual farmers, dabblers, to be encouraged somehow.

I am greatly surprised, Richard, I really didn’t expect a trait line that emphasized precision to be any good for a condition build…
I tried your build, and it works marvelously! I am getting more than twice the bleed stacks I used to get! I added 5 more points in dueling so now my illusions cause confusion on death… I noticed that confusion on death works even if the illusion dies from you summoning clones with three already out. I am running 0, 25, 25, 0, 20. I don’t have rabid gear, i have order of whispers gear, same stat combination though.

Huh, ran null today with a warrior, guardian, necro, and another mezmer. We won fairly quickly. I guess when everyone knows what they are doing it will run smoothly. Now that I think about it, most, if not all of my failed runs had one or more people who wouldn’t listen when we told them about nulls shield. They would either run all around the cave in a panic, or stand there attacking null (which kept null in one place and away from any green mines.) Upon reflection; I don’t want anet trying to program content around fools. I feel silly for blaming anet for player errors.

I pretty much play staff, and only staff, and trident in the water. I totally rely on condition damage, if I must destroy an object I summon phantasms. I just don’t like switching weapons. Oddly I don’t mind switching elements on my elementalist.

Just a very simple, basic, play style:
My build is currently 0, 10, 30, 0, 30.
Desperate decoy
Debilitating dissipation, Chaotic Dampening, mirror of anguish
Master of misdirection, Illusionary elasticity, Illusionary persona
a full set of runes of the undead; because they stack with chaotic transference.

I am tempted to change to 25, 0, 25, 20 just for the condition duration. I could even add two superior runes of lyssia for that extra 10%. Longer confusion, burning, bleeding, weakness, and vulnerability on several opponents just from my staff #1 wile my clones add stacks. Or just a bleed duration rune set. Again, I just want to use staff, it is an odd kind of mid range aoe weapon, I quite like it.

I used to ignore condition duration, and focus on condition damage, noting that people could just cleanse it instantly. However, after getting confused by reef drakes and just running around and using illusions to kill them, I am not so sure increased condition duration would be a bad thing.
I don’t pvp at all, but that could change.
Thoughts?

anyway finally beat him… 2 warriors, a guardian, a thief, and me (condition mesmer)
I was basically bait, when my clones weren’t up null followed me everywhere. So I would shatter when his shield came up, and run to the nearest green mine. Before that I was trying to 4 man null, so We didn’t have the other warrior, the others insisted we get more dps, an it worked.

There you have it folks it takes 4 dps and a squishy class to beat null. Only one squishy, so you can lead null with ease.

Substitute a squishy with a ranger pet if you like. Lol I can’t imagine trying to beat him with several ranger pets out. From what I have seen null likes summons most of all, then eles>mezes>necros

I may have recovered an upgrade once with a basic salvage kit.
If you want your upgrades back with any regularity you need to use a master salvaging kit. Even then it can fail to recover the upgrade.
I figured out a while ago the higher grades of salvage kits don’t only extract better or more mats from equips, they are also much more likely to recover upgrades.

I still haven’t had a successful run though. 14 runs that failed.
Also, why the hell is he so focused on ranger pets and other summons? I can’t lead him anywhere when he is dancing with a ranger’s bear. Engineer’s turrets auto explode a mine, if the turret happens to be in the mines aoe ring. Ranger pets and ranged summons often explode mines. Null’s Heal turrets spawn faster than one person can handle.

Rage and rampent energy and getting pushed or pulled into a mine, all at once. If someone tries to rez you the golem is just going to aoe spin you both, or you and the other three trying to rez you, and they will all go down as you die. If they leave you then we simply die one by one… in fractions of seconds. the rage electricity damages at an amazing rate.
Several times I have shot the fire mine closest to the entrance gass mines with the appropriate shot, it often explodes when I shoot it, the gas mine and the caltrops just beyond it work fine.

I am just truly frustrated.

If I can get people to agree, I am going to have to get summoners to not summon, unless they are mesmers (they will have to be ready to shatter kitten quick) Rangers will have to be always ready to press f3. I honestly don’t know what to do about the healing turrets.

I guess at the very end we all need to grab guns and make every mine green and lead null through every single one. Attacking just isn’t working, we can never quite kill him. We always get painfully close, and nearly always die in unison.

From what I have just experienced, trying to guide him into the correct mine especially with the random exploding mines and roving energy would be a total nightmare. On the other hand, if that would let us see that shield less often…

eh, he keeps attacking the ranger’s pets, annoying as hell. especially if the ranger doesn’t pay enough attention. Why is it we can just get near a mine and it blows, while the golem has to run over it, precisely? Also, there were several times when I used the correct setting on the mine detector only to have it blow up a mine anyway, several times in a row even.

When I noticed the lack of conditions I didn’t know what to do. That crowd control boon seem rather pointless since he can’t be blinded, or afflicted by weakness. I tried switching to support and just activating mines. I had have a nice toughness score and the golem seemed to like following me, when it wasn’t attacking the ranger’s pets… My last fight, he dropped his shield, so I dropped my detector to cast a few skills, we were all instantly downed. Well one guy was still on his feet. We seemed to be doing fine, and suddenly everyone was covered in electricity. Some one suggested it was rage. It is a little difficult when the shield pops back on immediately after we remove it. especially if there are no mines spawned t the time.

When exactly does a person realize that an event has become an endless loop? How many hairs make a beard?
By the time they do realize the monsters are endless, don’t they want to collect the drops they killed for, before they leave the area?
If I come upon an event, I am not just going to stand around to make sure it isn’t bugged while the other folks are killing everything. If I kill things I am going to loot them.
I am not keeping track of when I killed a monster so I can correlate it’s death with the moment I recognize a possible infinite spawn. I am certainly not going to loot all monsters in sequential order of kill. “Hmm this has been going on for about five minutes to long, now which monsters did I kill in the last five minutes and which bags and chests belonged to one of those monsters, so I won’t pick them up?” Not a chance.

the only day I gathered from a passiflora, this week I had run out of ori axes and ori picks. I figured I could get the pick and axe later so I harvested passiflora in the meantime. When I went and bought said pick and axe I found that I had been using my masters harvesting sickle instead of my ori one. Masters harvesting sickle is level 35… I had obtained one flower and several fruits using it. while my ori sickle lay forgotten in my bags.

This is just wild conjecture, on my part: They removed Super Adventure Box. In the notes about the box they mentioned turning off fall damage. What if it were a bit more complicated than that. What if they made a new type of jump just for the SAB, one that doesn’t end in fall damage? What if when the sab was removed or made inactive, not all of it’s contents became inactive? What if your character is trying to make two different types of jump at the same time? Of course the guess falls apart when you note people are taking damage both times, or when they jump repeatedly 4+ times, and when they die after the fact. ah well. I do know it hit me when I was guesting, I can’t remember which server it was though.

Not even going to comment on the whole ‘magic is cheating’ thought process. That’s just one big lofl.

I didn’t mean that using magic was cheating, I just meant to use cheating at dice as a non unique use for magic. My point was that if you can replace probability with other means, such as physically altering the dice, then replacing probability is not unique to magic and so is not essential or part of magic’s essence. Like setting things on fire is not an essential characteristic of magic, there are other non magical ways to set things on fire.

My point is that magic causes things to act against their natures, and this would make the application of logic to a magical situation difficult, if not impossible.

Does every law of physical science have the disclaimer, “unless affected by nearby magic.” 2 + 2 = 4 unless a doubling enchantment is in effect, though such an enchantment can be affected by a counter charm which will negate or merely diminish the effect of the enchantment, except on the one hundredth day of the year at 2:00 pm when such charms have no effect, not to be confused with the one hundredth day of the centennial year which actually doubles the effect of doubling enchantments, unless that day happens to fall on a Thursday…

If you change the nature of something it is no longer that thing. If I file down the edges of a die it is now a fixed die. It has become another entity and cannot behave exactly like the original. I am not talking about using magic to convert one entity into another. As you pointed out several forces can convert matter and energy into other forms. Since that is not unique to magic it is not essential to magic. Converting things is not the essence of magic. Magic causes a stream to run up hill, when the magic wears off, or is depleted, the stream will once again run down hill. Magic didn’t convert the water into special water that runs up hill. take that same water out of the stream, away from the magic field and it will behave normally. The nature of that water has not been changed. You get moa morphed, and for the duration of the spell you are a moa. When it wears off you are yourself again. Your nature hasn’t changed. the only thing that changed was that a spell was present which acted upon your nature, and then the spell was removed and its influence upon your nature ceased.

You could be converted into energy and that energy converted to a moa, but at that point you would not be you and your nature would have been replaced, not just acted upon, by magic.
The problem with talking about magic is that it doesn’t exist and, the terms I can use to describe magic are not as precise as I would like.

Nope. altering probability, cheating, is not unique to magic. You could use magic to fix dice, you can also weight them or file down the edges, and then throw them so that the die lands on the sides you want it to.
The thing about magic, the thing that makes it unique, that sets it apart from everything else. Is that it can make things act against their natures. All of my examples from the previous post are not improbable, they are impossible without the presence of magic.
Think about a world where magic is common.
If magic were to exist, how could Sr. Isac Newton have discovered gravity? People hovering around on brooms, the only fruit that actually falls off of trees is in the poorer communities who don’t have spells to automatically gather it. "Gravity is a force that pulls on things related to the poor and unintelligent… " How do the asura know about electricity? Do they know about electricity? “A fluctuating magnetic field generates an electric current… and so do an elementalists hands…” How can you even say that A=B (except when magic is present) If magic is everywhere in your world? Is there a place in Gw2 that is totally devoid of magic? Even a null field is caused by magic. “All objects fall at the same rate, unless one turns into a sparrow in midair, or falls upwards, or disappears.” Where are the crucial non magical similarities or differences between different types of matter and energy when they may be converted from one to the other or even cease to exist for any number of magical causes?
God, the elementals alone… Absolutely everywhere! The whole planet must be saturated with magic. I am sure you want to compare magic to a natural force like gravity.. but my brain is fried at the moment. Later.

I plucked this gem from the suggestions forum, one of the more recent discussions about um, armor variety. I was going to respond, and then decided that my response has very little to do with armor.

Actually, it does. Magic causes entities to behave contrary to their natures. That is the essence of magic. Oak trees do not become fully grown within days, it is not in the nature of oak trees to gain that much mass that quickly, yet sylvari magic can manage that. A slow flowing stream does not run up hill, it is the nature of flowing water to take the path of least resistance,the inquest’s magic causes a stream to flow against the pull of gravity.
Boulders do not become self willed humanoid shapes, air cannot be ignited by mere force of will, you cannot pass from one point to another without first traveling through the space between those points. Magic allows all of this to happen. If you should ever place a restriction upon magic, magic cannot accomplish this or that particular thing, a wizard, an eldrich abomination, a god, or a little girl will step forward and say, “Well, actually, " I can make that happen.” Magic means that logic becomes an impotent and arbitrary method. Yes I could take several months and learn to speak French fluently, or I could just perform this ritual and have the same effect. Within a day, an hour, a few minutes…

To doubt the protective ability of a party dress or thong woven using a ritual, is laughable in a magical world. If it is inherently magical of course it will stand up to a great sword or a flamethrower, magic means it gets a free pass to do the impossible.

Yes, yes, of course it does! Now go and tell that to the new self-styled lord of darkness over there, he seems to think he can break all of your magical rules… He must be doing something, even plot armor isn’t holding up against him!

More Skimpy Armor Please? [Merged]

Far to many coats cover the posterior. That is what the pants, skirts, pant skirts, and leotard bottoms are supposed to be doing. Though you couldn’t tell from some of the coats. Some, “leggings” do cover more than others, I would still prefer more coats to actually stop at the waste or above. An option to turn off a butt cape would be nice. Optional sleeves, and turtlenecks, would also be lovely.

even if you make an exotic mini pet… what if it is an ugly one? I suppose there may be collectors. If you make an unpopular exotic you are probably going to have to eat it or sell at a loss. In magic the gathering we call those crap rares, they have the rank but uncommon or common alternatives are better.

Got a yellow dye out of the flame pack. Flair. Very close to illumination. I tried it on the order of whispers cloth shoulder and the gemstone looked sweet. Gonna have to try dyeing that cloth armor with all the gems.. the one with 4 dye slots (can’t remember the name) Anyway not so impressive on cloth, or leather inserts, hopefully good for metals or gemstone type inserts.

Please make it a torch skin… and let it keep it’s ambient glow, please. I know the largest mad king book has an ambient glow, and I know I can use an aoe targeting field to see the outlines of ledges in a dark jumping puzzle. I would still like a torch that actually gave off ambient light. Since this one already does…

I only tried it on infantile mode though. If you want to take a group of five in there and smash at the thing in normal mode, let us know if you get anything. Tip: The amulet cannot be hit during a bellyflop cycle or when the mouth opening cycle. After a few rounds he starts to change his attack rotation. some rounds he just bellyflops and then opens his mouth, giving you no chance.

since the slingshot and bombs doesn’t seem to target I always have to eyeball them… I just figured the gems pieces don’t either. I simply face the frog while holding a gem, and when his mouth opens I click the fling icon. I never actually click the boss. The amulet is not targetable during a belly flop or a mouth opening cycle. The only real times you can target the amulet is when the frog is stomping to the left or right, starting when he looks in that direction with his eyes and ending just after the stomp. I tried to destroy the amulet twice, on infantile mode with bombs. The second time I used ctrl+t so I could keep track of the amulet’s health. ctrl+t only allowed me to target the amulet and only if it was available to be targeted. I could only target the amulet during the side stomp cycles, the targeting always fell off if a belly flop or a mouth cycle began.
Btw. when the amulet’s health reaches zero it rolls over to full health on the next hit. During my first attempt I must have gotten the amulet to zero several times without knowing it (I didn’t target at that point, I just threw 500 bombs. I knew that I was hitting it because bits flew off and 50 kept popping up)

The thing about this one, it is at a choke-point on the main path. You must travel past this point, it is not at all out of the way. The dig location also happens to be under one of the hands during infantile mode. Several bobbles have been found in out of the way locations. Is this the only one hidden on the “main” path? Further it is found by digging in water. I would hate to think that there are any hidden in acid… Since the shovel description makes a point that it can dig anywhere, shouldn’t we have found baubles from digging on tree branches?

I did learn that the best time to lob bombs at the amulet is between when the frog looks to the side to a little after the stomp is finished. The stomp animations are the only time you can hit the jewel anyway. The jewel is unavailable during the belly flop or mouth opening animations.

But yeah, I was expecting that killing the amulet to make the frog shrink or explode, at worst become unkillable. I had such hopes for an amulet drop of some kind. sigh.

It is immortal. I too noticed the health bar and wasted 500 baubles blindly throwing bombs at it. It looked like I got it down to half health. I figured I had been wasteful and so I came back the next day and tried to make each bomb count. I targeted the thing after each salvo. Apparantly I had “killed” the amulet several times over during my first attempt. When it’s health reaches zero it rolls over back to full. I know it has sped up my farming, zone 2 the pond with the two turtles. You have to jump from a lily pad onto a leaf. dig in front of that leaf and the purple spawns behind the leaf.

Found it during a group run. I was getting frustrated because I couldn’t make the jump onto the root that lets you get to the shortcut worm. Then I started being unable to make the jump from the lily pad to the leaf… I still had my candle out from using it in the dark woods, and this bothered me for some reason… I thought, “I can use the shovel to put the candle away.” So I did and there was this purple glow…

For the last few runs the two bubble bobbles that are supposed to spawn in the cage chest have not done so. I have not finished zone 3. I have eight bubbles, I bought 2. The last three runs I made the zone 1 boss chest had no bubbles, nor did the zone 2 boss chest. I feel like this started when I bought my first bubble, but I haven’t really fought the bosses enough to know. I read about people farming zone 1 and 2 so I thought I would give it a try. the nostalgia was nice. I like collecting the baubles. The staff skin with an animated bird looks cool. Hopefully I can get it before the month ends. I would love for the adventure box to reprise more eight and sixteen bit games. I dislike 3D jumping but I will put up with it for content like this. I intensely hate the bouncing mushroom platforms.

I can confirm; when you are downed, and you kill one of her summons, you do not rally.
I fell off the tower multiple times, always hit wood and needed to start from the checkpoint. If the follower dies she will not spawn at the checkpoint with you. After several attempts I did finally manage to kill the priestess without dieing from poison afterwards… and could not finish the quest. The objective disappeared when the priestess died, so did the map marker. The quest prompt did not change. Pressing space bar all around the area did nothing. I have not been back a second time.

except for us newbs who don’t know the name of what our next armor should be…
and the fact that people would then miss out when someone sells a rare armor under cost.
