I hope beyond hope that game developers begin to ditch Windows in favor of the SteamOS. No one needs bloated Windows for gaming, we could have much faster cheaper and lightweight systems with Steam. Just need the software.
people will still play guild wars 2 due to no monthly subscription.
There is no value in free… otherwise everyone would be playing it, right? Or LoTRO, or SW:TOR, or… you get the idea. Free means nothing.
Players are willing to pay for a service they find value in… WoW continues to prove it to this day, and ESO and WildStar are creating packages for that value as well. Some people prefer the subscription because it lets the designers focus on game design instead of monetization.
If the only thing a game has going for it is “it’s free” then it’s already on the way to the grave.
Not saying that’s GW2, but, they really do have to announce something pretty major – an expansion, for example – to be seen as relevant in light of new competition.
Sadly, this part of the manifesto that rang most true:
“But if you hate traditional MMORPGs, then you should really check out Guild Wars 2.”
It’s the reason I just don’t really play anymore, despite the amazing world.
I’ll never play another subscription game again, because of the design decisions that make subscription games work are the very design decisions that make subscription game suck.
But you don’t think b2p/f2p games are just as bad? The game design decisions are based purely on monetization. Same thing, different coat of paint.
Ultimately, this list represents the reasons I don’t really play the game anymore. They’ve all taken the edge off of the important features of what it means, to me, to be a good MMO. Especially instant travel, shared kills & resources and a game-wide economy.
Though, I agree with #7
I’d care more about minis if they weren’t creepy. Why do we have tiny people following us around?
I’m all for organic or mechanical minis, just not human/other sentient races.
I’m a little confused by the OP… what are you racing to level cap for, exactly? There’s nothing there waiting for you, no “end game” so to speak.
What am I missing?
@LanfearShadowflame
Thanks for the response!
I understand the goals, I think, of making classes less dependent on each other, but it would be neat if the also COULD be, if that’s how they chose to play.
Why not offer pure healing or taking abilities, but put the “skill” spin on them, sort of like WildStar is doing. No whack-a-mole healing there.
For players that don’t want to engage that way, the current/standard builds would still be available. But for those who want to try approaching content that way, they could work with these new builds.
Taking and healing also offer unique gameplay and there are players that enjoy that. Sometimes the “kill all the things and stay alive” strategy wears thin, because it’s very chaotic and not so tactical.
Obviously this has been discussed ad nauseum over the past year, but I really think that if ArenaNet could work on adding this depth and dimension to the game, you’d see a huge swath of player come back to check it out, and likely stick around.
Class interdependency is so important in an MMO, and here it’s really lacking.
I’d love to see a content patch or expansion that brings true group roles back into the picture. I think it would give the game an amazing shot in the arm.
Thanks for the reply… has this been answered officially somewhere? In an FAQ or anything? I searched but couldn’t find anything.
Am hoping they may have the tools internally to do this…
This is probably going to sound absolutely insane to most that read it, but… I’ve decided to come back and give the game another shot, however I’d like to do so on a “clean” account.
I’d like to start with no achievement points, none of the “progression” associated with an account. I don’t care about the characters I have either, as obviously I didn’t progress too far (maybe 36 or so) last time.
So my question to Anet is, is there a way to totally wipe my account and start from scratch?
To the OP, good post. However you have to realize, not everyone shares your opinion.
And for the most part, those who wish for change will post here, not those who wish for same.
Instead of making Tyria one big seamless world why did they choose to keep using portal load screens from GW1? can anyone explain why?
This is a big reason why I stopped playing the game… it’s such an amazing looking world, but the zone lines and loading screens at every turn broke the immersion… could never really have flying mounts, which would have made the world that much more amazing.
Compared to Windows, the framerate is lower. I haven’t noticed it at all becoming an issue during WvWvW zergs (I just started playing WvWvW, but it feels no different zerging a keep than it does running PvE or just exploring WvWvW). It’s EXTREMELY noticeable in all dragon and similar fights.
And it seems my post was premature… the BLTP black screen issue is still there, just not constant now – sometimes it populates the graphics, sometimes it doesn’t. Which is odd, considering it works perfectly fine in Mac, which leverages an offshoot of Wine.
No, it isn’t an offshoot of Wine at all.
Seems awfully similar to Dalaran…
Except for the fact it’s older than when Dalaran decided to float away.
Uh, no its not
Seems awfully similar to Dalaran…
Words, words, words. We’ve heard a lot of them, but only a change in action will matter. Many of the words you’ve said before are in complete disagreement with what you do.
So no, many players don’t feel like this is a “journey” they want to be a part of.
It also sounds like it was written by marketing. “Be sure to drop ground breaking in there at least twice!”
Expansion=same kitten you’re getting right now.
They are likely worried it won’t sell that well, yes.
arenaNet hasn’t even put together 1 content patch’s worth of equivalent WoW content yet, and they’ve been our a whole year.
The game is in trouble, IMO.
What you, the OP does not realize, is that the content pacing and locking is for your own enjoyment. It’s to progress and achieve things.. if you went right to the end zone, you’d complain that the world was to small and you had nothing to do.
And what you don’t seem to realize is that without levels there would be no need for an endzone. Hard to go straight to an endzone when there isn’t one is there.
Levels are meaningless numbers and only there for the less intelligent players.
Doesn’t work that way. Players HAVE to be directed, because YES there would be an end zone no matter what – whichever one had the combination of “easy” and “best loot” would be where all players go and the rest of the world ignored completely.
Hell, where do most level cap players spend time in GW2? The answer is not the world, even though the lower zones are “just as good” for them.
Smart game designers know what’s up. Dumb players think levels aren’t necessary.
in “MMOs”, yeah sure i agree with you, but you are forgetting the “RPG”, hence being called “MMORPGs”
Role playing games will always have leveling, it’s the part of “getting stronger” and the adventure etc.
It’s not an essential part of the ‘role-playing’. Otherwise it would have been called ‘level-playing’.
It actually is essential to RPGs.
What you, the OP does not realize, is that the content pacing and locking is for your own enjoyment. It’s to progress and achieve things.. if you went right to the end zone, you’d complain that the world was to small and you had nothing to do.
Never pay money to play this game. They create pain points on purpose, it has nothing to do with fun.
Hello,
I have played the game for 1700 hours now. I just reached 550 gold. I have enjoyed playing the game and i know that’s the most important. But I see all my friend and, guildies around me getting their legendaries. There is one who has played the game for 1100 hours and has started making his 4th legendary.
I farm dungeons and harvest nodes. But i’m still sooo far away from my 1st legendary…I’m totally lost.
What am i doing wrong? :/
They’re paying real money to get ahead.
Hi, I recently bought the game, and when I started to play, I noticed the starting zones or leveling zones are really empty =(, except Queensdale.
I was wondering if anyone is interested in a leveling group from pretty much level 1-80, or I could join a leveling guild if anyone has one of those. I am currently on the server TC, but can change server in 5 days >.< thanks
There’s not really many people playing anymore, and those that are are at level 80 so they hang around in end game zones or Lion’s Arch.
I wish I could point you to an in-game guild recruitment service, but there isn’t one of those either.
Perhaps there is a 3rd party web site someone can recommend.
If you are compelled to play every single day for any length of time… you are not casual.
Actually, the Mac figure for WoW player engagement is around 28% (Euhetemec has it correct.) Which matches the current domestic consumer market share for the platform… these studios and publishers wouldn’t be doing this if there wasn’t a significant opportunity there for them.
It’s foolish in 2013 to think the Mac cannot play the same games as the PC, and even more foolish to think that Mac customers aren’t eager due to the starved market.
It is however permanent, so being lvl 80 shouldn’t be much of an issue.
Eh, most players quit before level 80.
Steam OS will not be a platform that publishers other than Valve will write to.
We were told we would get our end game gear and never have to worry about it in the future. But no. More and more ascended items keep coming out.
Regardless of what anyone said, what sense would it make in a game that is planned to be alive for a decade or more to have an ENTIRE system in place – itemization – completely END within a month of players starting? OF COURSE they are going to continue item progression. Sheesh.
Plus, why would you want to be done? And if you do… why do it anyway? Why not just ask for gear right out of the box? Because if you enjoy getting it – enjoy it more! if you don’t then why do it at all?
Group content designed right means you need a team, not just warm bodies.
The targeting system in this game is terrible and actually the #1 reason I stopped playing. Clicking anywhere loses your target which is ridiculous, but there are also random target drops like the OP is explaining.
Low FPS is your (computer’s) fault.
Skill lag is Anet’s fault
No, it’s the engine.
Stop playing on machines from the late 90s. A 3rd gen intel i5 and a GTX 640 GPU will run Tequatl on max settings without breaking a sweat. The problem isn’t the servers or even the engine. It’s YOUR machine.
Source: Running Teq with no lag on max settings on a Dell XPS 8500 with a 3rd Gen i5 processor and GTX640 GPU
No, it’s the engine.
I HATE crafting and I HATE gathering. These are chores; not intense game play.
That IS gameplay. If you’re looking for one-dimensional twitch, then MMORPGs aren’t for you.
Sorry bud; there’s nothing engaging nor interesting about chopping trees, whacking rocks and clicking on a wooden bench to make a glowing stick.
Seriously, whats next? Crafting a fishing rod and fishing for hours to catch ascended fish?
Merchant gameplay is a thing. Just because you don’t understand economic principles, doens’t mean other people don’t enjoyit.
And you know what – you don’t have to do any of it if you don’t want to… buy stuff from other players who do.

Welcome to raiding – challenging, team-based combat. WoW has had it since 2004 (as has most games that followed), and it’s said we have to “ask” for it in GW2 in 2013.
They missed the mark by not launching the game with this kind of content. We’d likely be talking a very different story today about GW2 if they had. But that ship as sailed.
This is zerging not raiding.
I WANT raiding.
Give us an instanced version please, thx.
Well, yes… that would be preferred. Not sure why they won’t do that.

Why didn’t Anet tell us this was coming when the game started?
Now, with 8 characters, I have no interest in the slow process of crafting/manfacturing these ascended or whatever items for any of my characters… since I know that to make them for all will take many months.
The way this has been done is somewhat underhanded, and has helped to dilute my interest in GW2. Anyone else agree?
You can always buy gems for real money and sell them for gold…
(hint; this is on purpose.)
Shallow character progression has from the start been a very weak point for GW2. And it seems you have given in more of a fair shake than most.
There’s no reason they couldn’t provide consistent group content in instances so that teams could have ongoing challenges… Tequatl would have been a great place to start. But they seem to be stuck on the idea that “everyone” is the team, but as you witnessed, that leads to stale progressions and mushy character progression.
If they want to change it so that there’s an epic story involved with unmatched player skill to achieve it over time… then fine. But no more grind. Simply won’t do it.
I agree with the story and challenging content part, but there’s no way to do it without adding a grind of some sort.
The amount of content they’d have to produce per weapon wouldn’t be justifiable for a single weapon. Thus, they’d have to use some form of ‘grind’.
That’s the sad truth; ideal game design isn’t real world game design.
I think if you look at the way Blizzard has handled Legendary items in WoW through the years it’s easy to see how it can be very rooted deep in story and require a real team as well as individual effort.
This time around they did it a bit differently in that everyone was basically capable of earning one through an expansion-long quest line and there really wasn’t anything “grindy” that, if you were playing the game anyway, didn’t sort of just come to you. Most importantly though, they didn’t have a cash shop to lean on that can make the process more convenient by spending money.
The world of Tyria has some pretty awesome lore, but the storytelling in GW2 has been abysmal, and this would be one place they could work on improving it.
why not?more content.
No… no, the current method of getting legendaries is not “content”, it’s a grind with a push toward the cash shop.
If they want to change it so that there’s an epic story involved with unmatched player skill to achieve it over time… then fine. But no more grind. Simply won’t do it.
It’s quite safe to say that GW2 is nowhere on Riot’s radar when making any sort of creative decision of any sort. It’s a non-issue.
Sorry what? A game shows characters…
getting rid of guesting all together
Once I read that, I disregarded everything you wrote. Guesting was one of the things I am most pleased with. Being able to play with several friends from a few different servers when ever I’d like is awesome. So no.
There are much better ways to accomplish this, such as how Blizzard has does it. You simply invite a friend from another server, and they show up in front of you.
I don’t think the engine is modern enough or can perform well enough with dynamic lighting… as amazing as the art is, the world of Tyria will age quickly especially when compared to some newer tech games coming out (like WildStar, for example.)
Dude i don’t care about tequatl being hard i want greater rewards…..GREAT LOOT NOT greens and blues.I want tequatl to drop me a legendary that way ill be happy
The reason they can’t do that is because of the way loot works in GW2. Everyone can’t be eligible for loot… which they currently are.
They need a way to make world event bosses like this “taggable” so that only the organizing group qualifies for super rare/elite rewards, and the rest of the contributors still get access to the same loot they do now.
It’s probably not too smart to “test” a tool without too many folks in the test… not sure what’s up here.
Or they’ve deemed it as useless as it would be.
The industry of much more successful games than GW2 have proven a public test server IS the way to go.
Roles still exist though. Just because the game doesn’t assign them for you doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
They don’t exist.
Tell me, which class, skills and traits can I use to make myself a dedicated healer, capable of keeping up an entire dungeon party of 5?
