How can this be fun? Legendary grind

It isn’t fun at all. It’s a terrible failure at content creation… there’s no context for the legendaries, there’s no story. Just grind — grind of Asian proportions, 10x worse than anything World of Warcraft ever had.

I think this is good, though it may be too little too late.

Zerging is the most un-fun strategy and it was a shame it made it into the game in the first place.

How is pacific time “conflicting”? There’s only one time zone called that, and the company that created the game is in it.

And if you really… can’t, Google “pacific time zone” and the very FIRST thing you see is UTC-8

Am I the only one that sees this as a drip-feed to deviant behavior? GW2 is becoming more and more about explicit rewards rather than implicit, which seemed to go hand-in-hand with the spirit of the original manifesto.

“More rewarding” shouldn’t always equal a token, a badge, a point or an item.

This project was delayed in favor of having the specific folks required to build it skill-set wise working on solidifying the core of the game. You’ll hear more about our ecosystem in the future, but we’re not actively working on this project, in favor of making sure the core game itself is as fun and rewarding as possible.

Edited to add: We’ll discuss what sort of projects we’re doing instead in more detail in the blog post later this week, and even in more detail as the Jan/Feb/March releases get closer.

This was one of the features I thought would put GW2 squarely in the “next-gen” category, with support for external channels right out of the box… very disappointing.

Well he did say it was going to happen eventually, and even if it takes a while then at least the core of the actual game will be the benefactor. Although it doesn’t have your idea of “next gen” out of the box (bit late now) I’m sure many players will be happier to have better, more reliable loot drops, less buggy traits, perpetually working DE’s, bosses that are more innovative etc. etc..

See, to me… “better, more reliable loot drops, buggy traits, working DEs, innovative bosses” – that should all be part of the package without any special treatment. I shouldn’t have had the opportunity to even buy a box if those were the things that were still left to be done.

But they showed off the “extended experience” in 2010… they alluded that they had an entire team dedicated to working on it… separate from the game designers responsible for the things above.

So, it’s fairly inexcusable to me that it doesn’t yet exist, but even more so because it was due to “needing to make the game better first.”

The game should have been “better” out of the box.

Anyway, you;ll soon see once you level your toon there are cracks in the design all over this game. Its not apparent right away, but this game cannot hold your attention like WoW did for so long.

Why is this a problem?

Because palyers being “done” with an MMO is not profitable for them.

Guild Wars 2 Ultra Casual / TP Legendary's

Are not even legendary anymore or even rare.

Congrats on the legendaries.

What annoy’s me is Guild Wars 2 and Legendarys has just turned into trading post wars 2. Not about how much you played the game, how you earned it through playing the game, but how you can play the trading post….

Welcome to Trading Post Wars 2.

It makes me laugh how Arena Net made this game and thought it was a good idea, legendary’s are not even rare anymore a few months into the game because it doesn’t matter what or how you play the game, just play the trading post and get rich.

Is funny how someone like me who plays the game, does not play the market hardly at all, does not get out there credit card every 5 mins, has over 1000 hours of game time and yet still is nowhere near there goals or a legendary, but players with less than 500 hours have hundreds if not more of gold and 3-5 legendary’s already…..

I feel it just cheapens the game as a whole, I dont even see GW2 as an RPG MMO anymore, the rpg is a joke, its barely an mmo, I see it as an ultra super dumbed down version of an mmo for super casual players. That’s how I see GW2 from now.

How Anet thought this was a good idea I don’t know and there trying to compensate for there lack of forsight by knee jerk adding ascended gear grind and nerfing any decent way to make gold just by playing the game. Punishing players with diminishing returns anyone? Worst thing in mmo history and serves zero purpose other than to stop players doing what they want to do and forcing you to go do something else….causing an anti social effect aswell, sorry guys iv got DR I have to go…

So yeah congrats on your legendary’s but im thinking it doesn’t mean very much in this game anymore and welcome to Trading Post Wars 2.

TLDR: To me this game just does not feel like an RPG MMO, it feels like a super ultra dumb downed for the masses casual game and all about trading post wars 2 and the gem store.

You realize this is part of ArenaNet’s business model, right? They want to sell gems. Players can buy gold with gems… then buy lengedaries with gold.

This is all quite intentional and by design. If you think otherwise you’re fooling yourself.

The first Guild Wars was not a niche game… A game that sells 6 million copies and is able to hold its own for 7 years against WoW, coming from a fairly new developer can be considered a pretty huge success.

It held what against who? I completely paled in the shadow of WoW. It was nigh unplayable do to the awkward controls and strange “no jumping” clause.

It may have sold 6 million boxes over the course of the entire franchise, but the number players was a fraction of a fraction of that. And if you’re going to count it that way, you will also have to admit WoW has sold over 30 million.

Ditch the dungeons and gear treadmills and go back to how GW1 played..loot wasn’t as necessary and the game was really fun from start to finish..

Guild Wars didn’t really have very many players, certainly not the numbers needed to support a true triple-A MMO like Guild Wars 2 and compete with WoW.

Are you kidding me, they had 5 million players during the “Factions” expansion…

If ‘no raids and no major gear grind’ is niche, then I have no problem with that. Everyone knew GW2 was not going to be that kind of game. That’s why many of us BOUGHT the game.

But what we didn’t expect was absolutely no guild-driven team play or progression. What we didn’t expect was another solo MMO that throws out everything that is great about team-based progressive gameplay.

If I was forced to have a group/guild in order to progress I would quit and find another game.

The only reason Everquest succeeded with this mindset is because it was the only choice on the market, Final Fantasy XIV tried to force players to group and it died one of the quickest deaths in MMO history.

We cannot have this attitude going forward.

MMOs offer a very unique proposition in the way that they foster cooperative or competitive gameplay with progression intertwined. There is no other genre that offers it, and the core differentiator is the group content that makes it all possible.

We cannot any longer try to facilitate solo players into this content designed for groups. It’s making the overall experience for everyone anemic and any unique advantages about the genre are evaporating.

The NFL doesn’t field teams of volunteers. The Rolling Stones are not compromised of walk-on musicians. They are well practiced and consistent teams. The same must be said for MMO group content unless we want to see the genre wither away.

In all of my life, I have not disagreed with a post more than I do with the OP of this thread. The OP’s entire post can be summed into 4 words: “This is not WoW”. And somehow he goes on to make this sound like it is a bad thing.

No, it’s not WoW. It is solo friendly. BiS endgame gear used to be easy to get, but now you’ve gotten your wish and there’s a gear treadmill so enjoy that… And finally more Guild based stuff is on the way.

But I really don’t get it. You have how many other gear grinders out there? Why in the world do you people keep coming to the successor of the wildly successful Guild Wars 1 and keep trying to demand it do everything WoW did and nothing GW1 did? It boggles my mind.

3. We are missing engame challenges, raids AND the grind for better loot.
Yes yes, I/we know. GW2 is a mmo where endgame gear stats are capped for all, and easy to get to. Its all about finding better looking gear, and stand out in the crowd..
- That is just fine, if Arenanet want GW2 to loose players all the time from boredom.

Guild Wars 1 did just fine without that. More than just fine.

No… it amounts to “this is not an MMO.”

And GW1 didn’t do just fine. It was a small niche game… if you’re ready to admit that’s what GW2 is, I’m ok with that.

Selling 30 000 units a week, not tracking digit is a significant amount. Mist of Pandaria, the most successful WoW expansion is selling less, successful live MMOs normally stabilize at selling 2 000 a week or less and are still alive and well. Growth of 30 000 people a week is a significant amount. I don’t think that you realize that.

We recently visited NCsoft and came away confident that 4Q OP is likely to reach a record high of more than W100bn. Based on our conversation with the management, we estimate Guild Wars 2 sales at W118bn in 4Q (vs. W46bn in 3Q)

Yes, in case you were wondering.

That is a huge success.

-Edit: And… it’s releasing in China pretty soon.

The denial is strong with this one.

Guild Wars 2 sold, perhaps, 2 million copies, maybe a touch more. It’s been estiamated that perhaps there are 500,000 active players. Still better than most other MMOs, but lets face it, this game is free.

Most importantly… the number of players Guild Wars 2 has right now is more than it will ever have. Ever. There is no growth.

So WoW has 9,500,000 more active players than GW2 – and those players are willing to pay per month.

Guilds are their do enrich our experience not to be able to have an experience. If you don’t get that, why do you play mmo’s?

Back to my original complaint – too much time and effort by developers as well as too much expectation by players for solo players to be facilitated through group content.

If content was designed for a group it should only be accessible to a well-organized group. The minute you make compromises to it to include anyone who comes along with no communication or coordination required it becomes simply a bad joke.

Lets take an example…

Do you have a favorite band? I’m going to assume yes. Why do you like them? But more than that why are they a good band? Do you think they practice together? Do you think that contributed to their ability to play better or more complex music? It sure does. If 5 random people who may or may not even play an instrument came together chances are you wouldn’t like what you heard. Because they were not a team and therefore not as good.

Another example.

I am watching the NFL playoffs right now. I see two teams competing against each other… Do the same players play on each team each weekend or do they shuffle? Do they pick new teams when they show up at the stadium? Or worse just pick fans from the crowd to play? No. Why not? Because a team can accomplish so much more when working well together.

Those things above don’t facilitate a solo person walking in and having success and neither should group content for an MMO. It should be for well-oiled teams only.

And right now Guild Wars 2 has absolutely ZERO of that. And that my friend is the big problem it faces going forward.

Teams matter. Team play matters. If it’s exclusionary too bad… the players that want it will rise to the occasion.

i’m glad almost everything can be solo’d in guild wars currently as its a pain to find a group without a LFG tool, especially if i’m not doing the flavor of the month dungeon and wish to do something obscure.

That’s what guilds are for.

Everyone – especially the developers – is hell-bent on facilitating solo players in mutli-player content. This is to the detriment of the genre and has to stop.

They sold 2Mill copies and need place to put them just in case they log a back in. It in no way shape or form means that the server is current running full online 24/7 with concurrent players.

they sold 2 million copies in the first 2 weeks. The real copies sold number is between 6 and 11 million. I don’t see that massive people shed and I haven’t met a single person that has quit GW2 besides those that come to complain on the forums.[/quote]

I haven’t laughed so hard.

They sold 2 million the told us about. Maybe another 500 000 since then. And the actually amount of people playing is but a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of that.

GW2 has peaked. It’s now a struggle to retain and push them into the cash shop. Growth is over.

There’s plenty of complaining on the WoW forums (and every MMO forum).

If anything it’s worse on WoW forums as it’s the same crowd as Diablo 3 – blizzard die-hards, mostly kids and immature adults stuck in gear-ego rat race who just reply with “lolol l2p nub qt” – whereas here we actually have most people with proper grammar and actual words.

Hehe no.

The typing of complaining here on these forums indicated systemic problems and universal dissatisfaction with things that may not be able to be fixed.

Complaining about class balance is one thing. Complaining about how the game works or doesn’t – and is fun or isn’t – is another discussion entirely. And that’s what we have here.

you know what a dead game is right?

or a dying game.

look at Battllefield 3 / Diablo 3.

For an MMO – GW2 fits the definition of a dying game.

Saw it with Warhammer. Saw it with Age of Conan. Saw it with Star Wars: The Old Republic. The same patterns. And here players don’t even have to pay to play.

“GW2 fits the definition of a dying game”

With a steady population growth and lots of high population servers with increasing economies on all? Well if that’s your definition of a dying game, what is your definition of a growing one?

Next thing, you’ll tell us that CoD Black Ops 2 was a great innovation for the FPS genre.

Population is rapidly decreasing and worse there is no growth path.

The difference being those games lost 10x as many players as GW2 in the same period of time. How many servers has GW2 had to merge/shut down? Those other games had already lost up to half their servers this far in.

I would wager GW2 has lost as many players as TOR in the same period. TOR didn’t merge servers 4 months in it was closer to 7. Plus. that’s a different infrastructure.

Not dead but dying.

There’s noithing to keep players interested or playing long-term as an MMORPG could. So I think the plane they’ve accidentally set for themselves is:

1) Players comb back for the monthly update
2) play for 6 days.
2a) Maybe spend some money in the cash shop
3) Leave until the next patch.

The problem with this strategy is that the monthly update has to be spectacular each time. So far all we’ve seen are holidays which were obviously in the can and completed long ago. What will they do in April? or August?

In short I don’t think they can meet content expectations by making this a once-a-month game.

I also got my legendary daggers that expac but it wasn’t as cool as the staff

This is one of the biggest failures of the game. The premier “end game” activity is an abhorrent grind.

The very least they could have done is created a meaningful quest line and story to go along with it. Tyria has an awesome world and lore to draw from… would have been nice to feel connected to it in that way.

Instead collect 1000 things and pay gold (and money if you have no gold). Hardly epic.

I am just curious where Mike O’Brien has been? Pre-launch he was very accessible and all over the place. He’d post on Reddit and of course give high-profile interviews to big pubs like Forbes.

But it’s been conspicuously silent from the top. I think one of the things that has characterized ArenaNet as a company has been the communication from all levels with players but that seems to have ceased. Why?

Is it because everything is going just as the emperor had foreseen? Or is there lots going on in the war room to figure out how to turn GW2 into a success?

If you look at these forums there are complaints – just as there are on every MMO forum. But something is different here – folks are still discussing core foundational problems or bugs. The kind of discussion that a game like Age of Conan or Star Wars: The Old Republic enjoyed after launch.

But if you go to Blizzard’s WoW forums you see something different. Players are simply complaining about gameplay such as class balance like nerfs and things. But there is satisfaction with the core game. That doesn’t seem to be the case here.

There is unrest in the forest… there is trouble with the trees. Hearing from Treebeard might go a long way in strengthening the fellowship.

If you aren’t having fun, why would you play?

No that’s the point of Tetris or Call of Duty or Madden.

An RPG – especially and MMORPG – is supposed to be fun PLUS offer depth variety and progression. Deep experiences with long term goals and player satisfaction.

Simple “play” that provides simple-minded “fun” is simply not enough for an MMORPG.

The best weapon skins should come from mastering aspects of the game.

Heck, they should be themed based on what you’ve done.

You should be able to achieve benevolent weapon and armor skins by raising downed and dead allies/using group-altruistic abilities in combat, or jumping in to save a pvp allie in critical condition. Maybe some dark and deathly looking ones for large numbers of pvp kills, or aggressive looking ones for boss kills or challenge modes, or very odd technological ones for completing puzzles or discovering easter eggs.

Each of these would be earnable naturally by “just playing the game” and reflect your playstyle in the process. Then you could make similar-styled items that are craftable for people who like the tone of an outfit but prefer some other playstyle.

The gold sink needs to go though.

But their business model depends on players mastering the cash shop

@Zeldain,

In the end I just think you’re making too many broad assumptions. ‘For fans who love mmo’s and the possibilities that cooperative team play hold,’ I know just as many veteran MMO players that love this game to discontent players.

There are players who like anything, that’s not what I’m arguing. Simply stated, GW2 combat leaves the core unique selling propisition of the MMO genre on the floor to rot. There is zero effort at making team playt fun and interesting because they’re too focused on making sure any random player can play any group content without talking or working with another soul.

I think you’re missing the points where I agree the combat isn’t fun.

I did misspeak when discussing comparisons. You’re right. I’m being too strict. The point I was trying to make was in comparison of MMO systems. Every system of the trinity is exactly the same with every MMO. There are tanks that hold aggro, there are Healers that keep players health pools high, there are dps that fight to bring HP down on the target. These are tried, and tested to the point we can bring up numerous examples and draw conclusions of effective, and very ineffective.

On this we agree, the GW2 combat system is very uninteresting. There are basically 8 DPS classes that are very generic in and of themselves. But based on what we discussed above, and believing in ArenaNet’s goals, I don’t think they intend to change anything about combat… so therefore we’re left with what we have. I don’t think it’s a stepping stone at all.

Look at it this way, if I’m wrong, you didn’t waste anymore time on this game. If I’m right, you have a fun game to come back to at some point.

There are too many core, unconditional problems with the design. They’d have to whole-sale change the game for me to come back and play. It’s a shame, because I think it’s one of the most amazing MMO worlds, aesthetically and lore-wise, that has ever been created. (The story telling is abhorrent of course but that’s another thread.)

In the category of well developed (not the FTP trash MMO’s out there) MMO’s please list to me another MMO that has followed GW2’s design to a T.

I’m talking about same mechanics, same classes, same everything. Please don’t list anything if you can’t use the word ‘exactly,’ and instead use ‘like’ and ‘similar’ in your response.

None right? Well of course there aren’t any MMO’s out there exactly like GW2, because the only game that is exactly like GW2 is GW2.

There aren’t copies of any game out there if you’re going to use such strict guidance. They’re all original.

So what do you have to compare to this unique game to list it as a failure in regards to, ‘without this system, you can’t have this’? Nothing.

GW2 is very bland and boring to me. Yet, I don’t kid myself in thinking this is as good as it gets. Sure, we’re not going to see the same boss fights we saw in other games, because GW2 has a completely different system. Though subjective, I agree the trinity boss fights are far more fun than GW2’s. I love having a purpose in my party aside from contributing damage, so naturally I enjoy utility roles in the trinity system. Yet I’m fully aware other MMO’s have had decades to tweak the Tank / DPS / Healer system.

GW2 has had since August to tweak their own class system.

I’m positive this game will find its ‘sweetspot’ in a year or two. That’s exactly what happened with GW1, I have little doubt the same will happen with GW2.

It’s ArenaNet’s design. There were prototypes years before the game came out that were being play-tested. THAT is when they find out if something is going to work or not… not something as major as combat design after launch. I present to you SWG: Combat Update as one case sample.

ArenaNet came to the table with this “manifesto” and one of the first things they say in it is “if you hate MMOs, you’ll really want to try GW2”. This, in my opinion, is precisely the way they designed combat the way it is.

It’s designed so that you don’t need to play with anyone else, only along side them. No coordination or communication is necessary, and worse there are no class synergies inherent to facilitate those things.

We just don’t know if this system is a complete mess of a failure, or if the potential will outride this dry period. This system may, in time, demonstrate an amazing array of strategy in combat.

We do know.

There is nothing implicit in the combat design that they will change it to make more strategy and synergy required. The tools and the foundation are not there for it.

The combat is what it is by design, and it simply doesn’t work for fans who love MMOs and the possibilities that cooperative team play hold.

I truly believe ANet hasn’t really found a sweetspot for their bosses, and the new system of no trinity. Most of the times the interesting aspects of bosses in other games is the whole strategy between the different classes.

But that’s the purpose of an MMO. Strategy and synergy between classes, and the combat system Anet has designed simply doesn’t have any. It’s not a matter of ‘finding a sweet spot.’

To OP: Because the combat system has no basis for organization or roles. It’s designed to be a zerg that can be taken on by anyone passing by.

Meaning no special abilities, no punishing mechanics… just zerg for all the DPS classes (read: all the classes.)

Just bad combat design, that’s why bosses are lame.

I guess that’s where I draw issue with it. I really wish they DID have roles to some extent in this game.

I’m with ya brother.

This post also describes part of how they viewed grind in 2010.

Adding more later… Time to be in game.

Neat, you can use that same chart to show how many players are playing GW2 compared to other MMOs!

it depends a LOT on how you play the game.

imo, the “internet information” is breaking the game more than helping it.

players have no patience for junping puzzles; they google the answer.
players have no patience to test builds and weapons; they google one.
players just google the game.

in the end, players are screwing it for themselves.
mostly.

Well since you can’t change those factors, it’s up to the designers to make the game fun and non-trivial. They have not done that.
