I have to disagree with this. The whole point of MMR is to gauge the skill of players. It does this by reacting to the result of the games they play.

If this is accurate, and I believe it is, it would have a very good chance to predict the outcome. For example, right now we have stats that show when the MMR difference between the average of each team is approaches or surpasses 200, we correctly predict the winner 95% of the time. That difference of 200 is less than 10% of the spread between the top player and bottom players.

- That fits the theory of the ranking system. I’m surprised that the ranking differences of individuals in the same match are so large. It’s a factor of queue times and player volume, but also noise caused by secondary goals like preventing multiple classes on same party. One idea to increase player volume: allow queueing outside PvP isles. This would mesh well with the accurate remembering of player position on PvE world and reduce tediousness of waiting times.

Some people are like that, insecure about their own performance. I’ve seen dungeon groups on LFG tool have description like “5k+ AP points only” or players asking others to ping their gear as if a few points of damage made any difference in the grand scheme of things.

Rating points don’t tell other players anything. If the concern is “is this guy a good player?” after seeing that he has rating of 1500, what can be said about his value? The matchmaking already balances teams based on ratings of individuals. The logical choices:
1) 1500 is an accurate representation of the player’s ability.
2) 1500 is underrated ranking, because the player has been on a streak of losses and is likely to win this match.
3) 1500 is overrated ranking, because the player has been on a winning streak and is now anxious about losing this match.

So seeing individual rating doesn’t help predict the match, if the match is fair.

That being said, it could very well be just simple personal command like /rating or /rating_volatility on chat for those curious individuals who seek it to improve their own game.

Just for his knowledge.

- There’s lots of interesting questions, since MMR values are different for team size and professions. You could find answers to questions like:

  • Which profession gives me most consistent performance?
  • Am I better at playing Necromancer or Thief?
  • How has my ranking evolved during the past week?

It looks like you had a very high rating and a wide deviation… which suggests to me that you may have been hit by one of the early bugs that distorted your rating. Since then it has been stabilizing downward and is now near your previous Solo/Team arena ratings, which is still above average.

You should start seeing more consistent games.

- I would really like to see this kind of information available on a website. Would it be possible to add it to API for third party developers?

Light armor. They specialized in calling up spirits that attacked, protected by taking your damage, or healed, or they could use or give allies weapons. In Guild Wars 1 you could have a main profession and a secondary. So, the main could be a heavy armor profession with a light armor secondary. The armor you wear depends on your primary profession.

You’ve played 33 games, 12 of which are wins on this account. Was that for a specific time period?

- Those were my all-time stats since I started playing PvP a few days ago. I played some more since I made the post. I think I get it now: the initial rating was not my true skill level, so I had to lose many games until I reached my true rating. After this point I’m now getting 50% win rate:

Nice as the revivals are, they’re secondary to ultimate goal of scoring 500 points before opponent does. Also number of rank points correlates heavily with time spend on PvP, but little with your ability to play it.

17 games played, 4 games won. Ranked matches, single character, always solo-queued.

Considering that I spend several minutes queueing for a match, I’m shocked at how bad the system is for creating balanced teams. Are you perhaps calculating statistics like “team mate revivals” and “PvP rank points” that have nothing to do with ability?

A full loss is the same as if your team ended the game with a score of 0.

- How is this “full loss” different from just losing the match? The matchmaking seems pretty weird to me. I’ve played 15 ranked games with same character and only won 4 of them. Shouldn’t the system balance teams so that every player’s win rate would approach 50%?

Think about what you are suggesting for a minute.

- I haven’t suggested anything so far. Inserting reward trigger on last boss’ death is certainly a normal way to code a game. I don’t think the coders anticipated that party composition would rapidly change at this point in the instance and that selling services outside trading post would become a social phenomenon for dungeons. It’s using three systems (freely joinable parties in LFG tool, gold transfer with mailing and dungeon reward) to gain unintended advantage.

The developers read these forums virtually every day, but they derive the greatest benefit from reading a concise, combined set of comments from a wide range of forum members. Imagine reading the 12th or 20th thread that says virtually the same thing. Does that speak towards something positive: “This is definitely something we need to do?” Or does it point away from reading the forums, when there’s so much redundancy and so little value in repeated/duplicated comments? The devs are busy people. Let’s make it easy for them to get feedback, both good and bad, in an efficient, meaningful manner!

- I don’t know how developers see these forums, but I often use the front page with thread titles as a way of navigating what is being discussed on the forums. I can also understand why someone with fresh idea would want to start a new thread instead of having having their post buried somewhere on page 68 on a thread with 142 pages, where most of the responses are essentially personal messages between small group of forum users. Nobody can find the needle from the haystack like that.

Case in point: I want to find what Anet representative responded to big thread. There’s a mark that at least one (1) such post exists on the thread, but I need to click individual pages and quickly scroll from top to bottom and look for red color to find out if the post is on that page or not.

Since there’s no effective post voting and thread constructing tools like Reddit has, posting a new thread is sadly the best way to get attention on a subject.

Selling dungeon runs?

What’s the exploit?

- That dungeon rewards are not given for completing the dungeon from start to finish, but when the last boss dies or last cutscene is played. Since rewards are scaled based on how difficult the dungeon path is, I believe the reward is intended for full completion.

The buff is a big boon. 30 all stats is equal to having armor 2 grades above ascended*, and every time you capture bloodlust, enemy loses the bonus on all of their players. Pointwise denying enemy bloodlust cuts their point gain, as stomps no longer give score to them.

For math:
Bloodlust 30*6 = 180 stats
Ascended compared to exotic +47 light, +54 medium, +60 heavy (armor)
+ 14 major stat, 11*2 = 22 minor stats
total 83 stats light armor, 90 medium armor, 96 heavy armor

Builds question

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zenith.6403

Here is a very popular site for builds:
http://metabattle.com/

- I went to check for WvW builds. On the Ranger section there’s a build that is “great”, where the author apparently doesn’t understand the role or strengths of the profession at all. Put a melandru rune on armor, not take movement speed signet or trait which gives the longbow 1500 range. Instead choose 62-per-second healing signet and tanky traits… you might as well roll a Guardian if that’s the kind of style you’re into.

Players don't understand bloodlust.

in WvW

Posted by: Zenith.6403

Zenith.6403

It has come to my attention that I’m in the minority of the playerbase who understands what bloodlust is, how to capture and maintain it. The concept of “holding” ruins that turn color automatically seems to be unintuitive for a lot of players. Furthermore since it requires coordinated effort of at least two people to actually capture bloodlust, you get players who stay and capture one ruin and just leave afterwards. The concept of holding ruins is interesting, but it’s executed poorly. Therefore I suggest a change to how bloodlust works:

  • Ruins should not turn into grey color when nobody is in them. Instead they should remain in the color they were after the last person captured them. This makes it very clear which team is holding ruins in the borderland.
  • To capture bloodlust, one team should hold all five ruins in the borderlands after which timer starts for other teams to intercept it (by capturing any ruin)

This kind of change would make the concept of bloodlust more intuitive and would allow even single players to contribute to effort by capturing and defending points.

Also, someone new to the game will not notice the difference. Their leveling experience will only be NPE. So to tell a new players it’s boring and tedious isn’t fair. I know lots of new players who do not feel that way!

- I believe the human condition is shared. If killing speed of monsters is acceptable for a character that is fully geared, it will certainly be less than acceptable for character with inferior gear and lack of access to relevant traits. Try taking upleveled character to WvW and start killing neutral monsters there to notice the difference. On the positive side OP will be happier when he can get those traits, if he doesn’t become bored and quit before that.

I’d like to see one quality-of-life kind of fix to both Feighned Surge and Slipstream Mesmer spear skills. You know when you use these skills you gain a short burst of movement speed. This burst ends in full stop of movement before the standard moving animation and speed is resumed. It looks silly and makes me wonder if I gained anything by using these two skills. I’d like the movement continue on normal speed (or swiftness speed if the buff is active) without stopping.

Ranger: everybody want to kill you first. Good in nothing. High risk, low reward. Good against very new players with “random” evaid sword or with 1500 range longbow

- Ranger deals thieflike damage from range. Rangers are primary targets because when a ranger chooses you as a target, unless you have projectile reflect or invisibility, you will go down.

New to Game, deciding on what Profession

in WvW

Posted by: Zenith.6403

Zenith.6403

Every profession has damage, healing and party support abilities so there’s no role trinity.

Warriors and Guardians are wanted because of technical oversights. For example the Guardian’s Line of Warding skill can create an uncrossable wall for 5 seconds that knocks down all foes trying to cross it. Since WvW is played with huge blobs of players, this can have devastating effect on the blob. Natural counter of blobbing – AoE damage – is limited to affect only 5 targets.

Solo playing is plagued by poorly implemented mechanic of stealth, which has no counterplay and allows classes that have it to engage and disengage fights at will.

I think you’ll have the most fun if you don’t take the game too seriously. It’s a freak show with each class competing with others in overpoweredness.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zenith.6403

Zenith.6403

An important question may be to ask if a model is still a good concept and a great implementation just needs to be focused on or if the model doesn’t work fundamentally.

- Goodness of RNG vs. non-RNG model depends very much on what do you want the moment of greatness to be. Think about situation like this: you’ve worked hard for a month and at payday your boss gives you an offer. You could either have your salary as normal, or you could flip a coin for 50% chance of no salary and 50% chance for double salary. Expected value for both options is the same (0.5 * 0x + 0.5 * 2x = 1x), so it shouldn’t matter which you choose, right? Regardless almost everyone would choose to have their salary as normal because there is value in predictability.

I think most people tend to be conservative in economic decisions. Randomness is undesirable, but it’s even worse when one doesn’t know the odds. The value of a legendary weapon could range from 10 dollars to 1000 dollars (we don’t know what precursor drop rates are). I’m not going to start emptying my bank account to find out which end it’s closer to. If the price was fixed on a level I would find acceptable, you could have a deal.

Example of good kind of moment of greatness is scoring a critical hit. You hit the monster on soft spot, so the health bar went down faster. It breaks the monotony of fights and adds a bit of random chance to every encounter.

Was I being a troll by trying to defend the castle? A couple of players whispered me telling me I should uninstall and that I was costing them the ‘recap’ experience and stuff. One guy did offer me support, but by then I had had enough, and I logged out.

- People are generally playing Edge of the Mists for the fantastic and constant rewards it brings. You’re not getting any rewards for defending structures, but lose the bonuses you’d get if you let the enemy capture your building and afterwards capture it back.

I don’t really understand – if it isn’t a WvW zone, why can you kill other players? And if it is a WvW zone, why are players allowed to act like this if you try to do what you’re supposed to do?

- Technically it is a WvW zone, but without the usual server allegiance being a factor fostering competition. Of course you can build siege weapons and defend if that’s the way you want to play it.

Why Wvw fails to attract players

in WvW

Posted by: Zenith.6403

Zenith.6403

2) A game of numbers : WvW game is more about numbers. It favors zerg-play which, after a while, becomes more and more boring(same builds, same roles, same approach). Unfortunately nothing was done to actually encourage a different approach to WvW or tune down the zerg effectiveness so people’s focus can shift to something else for a couple of years now.

- The only reason it’s a game of numbers is because there’s no information what’s going on in the map. Stick close to your zerg so you have the highest odds to capture whatever you decide to capture. What if you could see where your enemies are going? Several things:

  • Defending gets a whole different meaning. See that zerg coming to your tower? Quickly send defenders to that objective while they still can enter it.
  • Ganking and dueling players who are moving between points.
  • Taking objectives wouldn’t be so easy and more often you would have to build siege engines like trebuchets on strategic spots. It would also come down to defending the map areas at large.

Why Wvw fails to attract players

in WvW

Posted by: Zenith.6403

Zenith.6403

The point of WvW isn’t to get shinies, it’s to beat the other servers. The problem is, that’s largely out of a player’s control, and the process of helping out is not often fun.

- Take a look at the income evolution graph for Far Shiverpeaks server, tier II in Europe:

http://mos.millenium.org/servers/view/23

Notice how the battles are quite close in daytime, but early in the morning when players of other servers have gone to sleep or school, Far Shiverpeaks players capture everything their opponents had. This gives them huge score advantage that can’t be surmounted by playing at daytime. This is true for other successful servers as well: late at night and early morning coverage is what decides games.
