Verbal abuse by enemies in WvW

From what I understand, this is done by them adding you to their friends list (or blocking you), then your actual player name comes up for them to whisper you.

- Indeed. When I blocked the abuser I can now see their charactername, accountname, online status, current location and number of achievement points!

Lately I’ve noticed something odd. When I kill enemies on World vs. World, they are somehow able to whisper to me with insults. I thought every enemy was named just [servername] [rank name]. I would like Arenanet to close this exploit, as it makes playing unenjoyable.

I need to rebuild my ranger.

I love my ranger, but is sure seems squishy.

- That’s what the class is. Glass cannon with huge single-target damage and long range. Poor area-of-effect and party support abilities. If you want a tank, play Warrior or Guardian. If you don’t play the class to its strengths by positioning correctly in fights, you won’t fill your role. Stay in the backline or sidelines so you won’t get damaged by enemies.

This is the build that maximizes your DPS and thus usefulness. Pick a target and attack it until it goes down.

If you get attacked, you have knockback, stealth, dodges and invulnerability to get you out. This build is not meant to for 1v1 situations. You’ll do much better in groups. Use greatsword for getting away.

I predict the removal of white swords will weed out all the wvw players who do not care about ppt or helping their server become better.

- Where did you get this idea? White swords is a defensive measure: it simply says that objective is under attack but tells nothing about what kind of force is attacking it. Could be one player “tagging” it or full zerg taking it. Scouting is definitely needed and appreciated even with white swords. Removing them is making defending harder… which is already giving us this “player vs. door” type gameplay. It’s strange why Arenanet would want us to rely on third party applications like voice chat to coordinate our game.

Gotta love these backseat psychologists – I suppose we are all touched in the head.

If you don’t like it and feel it demeans you as a person – don’t log in anymore – problem solved.

There is so much stuff to really get upset over – this ain’t one of them.

- No, we’re not touched in the head, but the method is meant to fish out the people who are. It’s both unethical and disrespectful for the player. I would fully support a law that included these types of schemes under gambling legislation.

My problem is with the why. Why did Anet spend time on this instead of fixing more pressing issues? My theory is this is the other half to the NPE “solution.” The NPE was to get new players to stick around. These free log-in rewards are to keep old players logging in.

- Skinner box and metrics. Have you ever been to a casino? This is a platform in which you’re supposed to make microtransactions and fund the engine that gives you more and more of carrot in a stick. Call it “loyalty program” for being a good guinea pig.

What kind of rewards excite you the most? Anet tweaked them a bit, so PvP players now get reward track progress and WvW players get their World XP track. Apparently unmotivating rewards were a big problem that caused the players to drop the game. It’s alright if you don’t want to play either, just log in to claim your reward and Anet can have it added to the statistics. And who could complain about free stuff in this brave new world?

For heck’s sake how hard is it to re-purpose a skin, change it’s stats and binding, and add it in somewhere? Make it plentiful and easy to get even.

This is the kind of request that should take one person and hour or so to actually do.

I’m not really bothered by the current model. The only thing that bugs me is the gamble aspect, i have partaken in it and have also gotten pretty disgruntled over it.

- Gambling without at the very least knowing the odds is throwing your money away. What if the thing you want has 0.001% chance per bet and bet is 5 dollars? We don’t know it, it could be a scam.

I have trouble understanding a design feature that is intended to make the player experience more unpleasant. Like you said, the player avoids it. As in, the player avoids logging on altogether and finds a game that doesn’t put them in a penalty box for five minutes because they happened to take a risk. The point of a game is to be an escape from reality with limited consequences. Being forced back to a waypoint is consequence enough. What exactly is forcing a tedious walk back to the corpse going to add to the experience?

- Important part of enjoying a game is the feeling of competence. You’re right that if the game constantly sends you the signal that you’re incompetent, then the player will quit playing the game. On the other side if everything you do is outside the realm of competence, then playing the game feels pointless. Good example of the latter is grinding: do this easy action thousand times and you’ll be rewarded. The reward is given for simply playing the game, not for learning new skills.

Just goes to show that, in a world where people are complaining that current content “only takes 45 minutes to complete”, you will have people who complain that it “takes too long to get rewards”.

- How about this:

  • Anet decides to focus on creating a great game that is rewarding to play for it’s own sake, instead of creating a game where people play for rewards.
  • Gem store items are reasonably priced and interesting instead of limited and based on gambling.
  • Bugs are fixed in timely manner and good documentation in given to players.

It’s not that difficult, really.

I tend to disagree with your statement. The population sample is significantly skewed. People who post on the forums are people that want to voice something.

- Voice their concerns, excitement or ask a question about the game. If complaining, what are they complaining about? You can pretty much judge from the content what kind of issues are relevant to your interests. Indie game forums are often full of people who are simply seeking information to deepen their appreciation of the game.

No, grinding is the act of doing the same content over and over and over and over again to gather resources or to hope to get that rare drop.

- Exactly, presence of reward makes it a grind. When you’re playing a game like chess you have same board and pieces every game, but nobody would say that playing chess is a grind, because the activity is its own reward.

Every game is grind. Every. Single. One.

It’s always about refining and repeating your actions.

If you’re noticing it, then maybe it’s because you’re playing simply to get some kind of status symbol, or reward, rather than for the enjoyment you get from the game.

- Not just playing for reward, the rewards are smothered on your face. It’s made very explicit that you’re playing for them. Run around the world doing errands: BIG GOLDEN MEDAL appears on your screen and stays there until you click it. Kill a few critters: cling achievement unlocked. Whenever you kill a monster, there’s effect to some kind of progress bar. Gain stuff, unlock stuff, progress… that’s what this game is all about. That’s what is meant by grind.

GW2 endgame is grind...

Zenith.6403

Grind exists for one reason. No group of developers can create content as fast as we can consume it. They put years working on Guild Wars 2, five years at least, and people had 80th level characters and a week and exhausted all the content in a couple of months. That’s because there was very very little grind at launch compared to now.

- Games don’t need to be grind. Grind happens when game developers get the anti-humanistic mentality that the player should be “rewarded” for doing tasks in a game that is built to be simple and monotonous. Because the game is simple, you can easily create lots of content without worrying about depth.

Take a look at many first-person shooter games. You could be playing the same map over and over, but experience it differently each time you play. What about fighting games? The player’s actions make up the game, as opposed to going through the hoops set by developer.

- It happens even in WvW. People just don’t move anywhere without a commander telling them just what to do and what skills to use. I’m playing in Seafarer’s Rest server, which is #1 WvW server in Europe. Today I literally just walked across our enemies’ side on Eternal Battlegrounds, captured their (upgraded) far side camp by myself and saw neither enemies or friends on the way.

Random example: think about how much time it took to anet to do the Commander tag account shared & multi colors. Such an easy/fast thing to do and always asked by EVERYONE…and yet it took them ages.

- It’s not so much a question what is easy and what is hard to do. When you’re responsible for making a good game, there are many things you should notice:

  • What is it that we want to accomplish with this feature?
  • Is this feature available for all players or should it be given to part of community? If latter, by what criteria does the selection happen?
  • Should players choose their own colors or should we put pre-defined set of colors?
  • Should the colors represent something?
  • Is there some other functionality to commander tag?
  • Will implementing this cut out other options in the future?
  • Will implementing this break some existing system that is in place?

If you get it wrong, you’re just going to have wasted dev time in exchange to annoyed community who doesn’t see the point in the change. Lots and lots of community suggestions are nothing but knee-jerk reaction to whatever is annoying them at the moment.

This is very frustrating.

These scores seem legit, that server must have 1 person on it ?

- The whole game mode is about having masses of players and coverage. If you have 20 players on one side sieging keep against 40 defenders, keeps stays on the original holders and those 20 attackers will have accomplished nothing. At some point they’ll just give up on the game mode. It’s almost impossible to win a fight against larger group due to how downed state works.

Zenith.6403

My question: Do you agree that it’s good to not share that sort of information, information related to the actual direction of the game saga as a whole?

- I was thinking more along the lines of what are the long-term priorities of the company. Is it just about retaining the playerbase by any means necessary and making changes on the game based on “metrics” type of feedback, or is there some sort of creative ambition going on? If latter, what kind?

I know that the situations of companies aren’t comparable, but as an example League of Legends has had some significant investment in the core structures of the game. If an old champion no longer filled the role it was originally designed for, then the champion was redesigned and re-released to players. To me that feels like the developers want to maintain cohesive player experience of quality throughout.

You can run through some World vs. World and count plainly visible bugs that have been there since the launch of the game. Bugs that you encounter every time you play the game mode, week after week. I’m sure that if anybody had bothered to playtest the game, this version would not have been released. Anything from NPC standing in the middle of supply depot and player pressing F for ‘hello’ instead of getting supplies.

- I don’t see the point in player-initiated server transfers in the first place. All it does it to create unhealthy bandwagon effect described in previous posts. If some servers are underpopulated, they should be merged by Anet. Megaservers made server allegiance meaningless in PvE anyway.

While at it, I think the exploit of being in a party with enemy server player in WvW should be closed. You can see on the map where their commander is going…

You are never going to get to a place where all gear is equally good for every person. It just isn’t possible, and even if it were, it wouldn’t be a good use of development time.

- Going full power stats is good because:
1) condition damage is broken
2) skills, dodging and buffs/debuffs give better protection than armor tanking

so it’s not really a question of what kind of character you want to play, or how to strategize to beat the challenges.

Queensdale is active, other areas are less active. It’s pretty much a single player game to play PvE. There’s a new leveling system that gimps your progression. For example you won’t unlock your traits until 30th level and have to do certain tasks to assign them. Elementalists and Necromancers are fine. Play how you like.

This is a great suggestion, but a bit too practical for consideration. You see, a fitting suggestion has to sound like a great idea, but leave the player underwhelmed. Adding time for hacking report booster is a step into right direction. It has to solve a problem that isn’t a problem, like armor repair canister. It should solve a made-up problem like storage limit.

The problem that they have stated hasn’t been lack of new players but that many new players leave the game before getting to 80.

- It’s the name I tell you. They bought it expecting some guild wars and instead they got bunch of repetitive tasks. Nearly every heart quest follows this pattern:

  • kill these monsters
  • interact with these objects
  • fetch these trinkets

80 levels can take a couple of weeks to reach. By that time it should be clear what kind of game the player is playing.

Condition/Boon Duration is Bad Design

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Zenith.6403

Durations are absolutely necessary. The entire point is that longer duration = stronger boon, it is an extra point of tuning for balance.

- If only it was so that increasing condition duration scaled so well. Since damaging conditions tick every second, 2.0 second burning or 2.99 second burning (+49.5% increase) has same effect. Having large number of condition damage characters in party is going to cap their effectiveness, while -condition duration food sharply cuts down effectiveness of single condition spammer.

Condition duration modifiers should be removed and replaced with condition damage modifiers.

Party support is Guardian’s theme and I think it should stay that way. But what buffs should they bring to the party? Stability and protection fit the theme. They’re “solid like a rock” so maybe providing swiftness should be left to other professions. There’s also too much caster-type power with AoE autoattacks (staff #1). Strong team player should be weaker individually.
