To get badge drops you need a significant amount of damage in a kill. In a big zerg where you tag everyone with 1 skill you’ll get small bags and other junk. I seem to get around 1 badge every 3 – 3.5 kills on average.

Fully agree with OP, there’s some major consumable abuse recently. One I saw last night was doing perminant knock downs over and over. It wasn’t the gear one either.

Cool I think you’ll have fun with it. It took me a while to get used to playing the more tanky build and consistantly landing CnD, knowing when to run, when to fight and so on.

Here’s a nice bit of number crunching and theorycrafting to help decide where to put crit damage (valk/zerker) most efficiently and where to put knight’s or other stats.

Mesmers are great 1v1, one of the best. The problem with a mesmer roaming (and guardian too) is they have no mobility since roaming isn’t actually about 1v1. You need to be able to pick your fights.

The hide skill isn’t up yet. If it somehow is, wait 3 seconds while auto attacking and then stomp again…

The fact that you filled all your slots with PvE characters sucks for you because you should have one empty for PvP to learn the skills if nothing else.

Depends on your play style but personally I found D/D glass cannon backstab is the worst build I tried (also the first).

For roaming WvW I’ve been using a full valk/knight’s geared S/D and shortbow thief and found it much stronger. I don’t kill as fast but I win more 1v1s 1v2s and 1vXs with it than with D/D. My traits are 0 30 30 0 10.

I forgot to add roamers are the eyes and ears for where enemy zergs are, scouting their siege and spotting for yours, first responders to Xs on camps and towers, and any other small objectives (quaggen nodes etc…)

You should be reporting information on enemy zergs to everyone else on the map and/or voice chat.

I just wish WvW promoted roaming more than zerging. There are times when over an hour or two, the only people I see are either in 10s, 20s or 30s… Maybe 1 or 2 5 groups if I’m lucky.

The problem with solo roaming though is that you aren’t really helping to do anything constructive for your team on the map.

Then you don’t know how WvW works. While the 30 zerg is hitting it’s head against the front gates, your roamers are taking yaks out in the back so that the siege damage from the zerg will actually mean something.

And soloing a supply camp is about the most efficient you can do in WvW. Imagine converting a small zerg of 10 into seasoned roamers and then flipping every camp and stopping every yak on the map in 5 minutes (theoretically).

A good roamer is much more valuable than a zergling. It’s just that with the WvW reward system, zergs get much more rewards/kills/karma.

A lot of classes can roam with 1v1 builds but thief and d/d ele seem to do it best. Here’s a couple videos of my thief roaming from the last 2 weeks.

Damage levels seem fine to me. Full zerker builds were in most cases a failed meta.

Why is everyone complaining about Zergs?

OP, zerging isn’t about numbers, it’s about everyone on the map doing the same thing in one big group because the rewards.

As a zerg you:
- get more rewards than as a small group or solo (technically equal rewards but the zerg completes it faster)
- don’t need to display any skill or thought
- almost certainly contribute less to your team overall than if you were in a small group or solo.

So the reason for zerging is because of the reward system in WvW. Not anything about ‘superior numbers’.

So the problem with WvW is that, through its rewards, it promotes zerg play over roaming and small team engagements.

If you’re looking for a competitive Maguuma, I think you saw it when we led reset night with our 2 full queues but I doubt you’ll see it again for the rest of the week.

FA is more competetant and fun to fight than Kaineng IMO. DB of course is always a good fight when we’re not both overshadowed by some other larger server.

There’s just not much motivation to invest time or money in WvW when it’s all guaranteed to disappear overnight. We’re only here from the collateral damage of Mag 2.0 and I think everyone remaining will be glad to be back in T4 next week.

Thief's Speed Hacking

All they need is add a hit-effect when you’re hitting stealth characters.

Apart from that, recent culling changes greatly improved combat vs theves since stealth essentially doesn’t cull now except in massive zergs.

That said, killing theves is quick and easy from my warrior with on-demand 10-15k killshot (10k with a tanky build) while from my tanky S/D thief which sacrifices all burst, I can’t really do anything to d/d eles, tanky guardians, and certain mesmer builds.

Just a heads up, if your hitting a thief while they’re stealthed pay attention to the animations, you’ll know when you’re doing damage.

Interesting and useful to know. I never really paid attention to the attack animations before. Thanks for that tip.

You’re missing the point that these guys DO NOT REACT. We can’t take them head on, obviously, but a flank or any sort of moving to the side and they just run back and forth auto attacking ahead. This is not zerg busting.

Notice how NONE of them take any damage, and if they do it gets healed. If they receive a condition, boom its gone.

How does that happen? You stay on your commander AT ALL TIMES. You DO NOT run off EVER, EVER, EVER.

WM is just running a similar tactic, maybe not the same builds, but similar.

It’s not the tactic in question, everyone knows about zergballs and combo fields… It’s the implementation.

Watch any of the initiates in that video, look at 8:00 for example. They play like real people, they know where they’re going, what they’re about to, and how to adjust their formation to the positioning to completely destroy their opponents numbers. It takes 1-2 sweeps to take out a force of superior numbers, not 10 sweeps against inferior number to end up taking taking out 10-15 people total and also fail the objective… How would you address this?

Not sure why the argument is about the tactic itself. Of course combo fields work and they work very well when done with real people.

To counter a thief theres just 1 skill you need to dodge, block, or blind, or interrupt, CnD.

Then they have no stealth which means they’re down 5 initiative (half their potential skills) and their most powerful stealth opener is gone.

Theves can’t touch guardians period. D/D eles almost always force a retreat, and warriors #3 rifle + kill shot will down every single glass cannon thief. 2 skills.

If you don’t understand the skills of a class, you might not be able to beat it regardless and that’s how it should be.

Suppose the easiest way to determine if it’s a multibox, is to have a warrior jump into the middle of them and use Fear me. A multibox shouldn’t recover from that, leaving the stragglers running in random directions.

I’m pretty sure they will recover from that and any CC which is what makes it interesting. But if you’ve watched bots in PvE, they also don’t seem to be affected by their pathing being interrupted (like by being in downed state). If you revived them they would get up and move to the exact same location as every other bot as if they’re moving to a precise x,y coordinate rather than a simple repeating macro.

They split plenty. What they were doing there? Farming easy kills. If you weren’t a thief, you’d have died several times just like all the other maguuma players in that camp.

And stomping? Lol? What kind of baddo actually does this in large fights?

Are you being pedantic? Stomp or kill its the same thing and they don’t do it in a number of cases.

Who died serveral times? Some died once and stayed to watch the hilarity. The only people who were downed were directly in front of them and they didn’t even finish them all (including myself). I was downed and while unstealth, they didn’t finish me or stomp.

Farming what? Their whole guild got what, 15 kills and 0 Karma in 10 mins? Ok that’s ‘farming’ by Kaineng standards maybe but a group of Real players who are organized could do that with 1/4 the numbers or less. I mean sometimes I can do about 8 kills in 4-5 mins solo but if you’re karma training, of course you wipe everyone and take the camp before leaving. How could someone in Kaineng not know this??

What incredible discipline and organization!

Zerg of 18 can’t even take a camp from about 6 people (was less when I got there, before I started recording).

Why on earth would a zergball stay balled up vs a disorganized force of ~6?

Why do they NEVER split up to clean up and take the camp? Has a WM zergball EVER split up?

Why don’t they stomp downed players (or even finish them)? Just run by and let them get ressed.

Why would they let us res the superviser over and over and ultimately fail taking the camp, leaving before things actually get messy?

Why don’t they touch anything behind them or to the side right next to them?

We already know the answer to all these WATs…

I’m guessing multiboxing isn’t against the GW2 ToS. It isn’t on WoW from what I’ve heard, though I’ve never played that game. But it’s just stupid fighting them… feels like PvE.

This post is so full of fail. For the first two ‘cases’, it’s called being good players and understanding how to play WvW. Why would members of the zerg stop to deal with one member, who is hardly going to do anything to them at all if ignored? The guild claim NPC is much more important of a target to take down in lords room than any players, and if people stop to attack the one fool who is trying to distract the enemy force, it slows down the capture. Focused fire is the best fire. WM players are very disciplined, they attack who/what Jang attacks without question. In terms of defending, your priority is always to be in the lords room. If you’re in the lords room then the enemy cannot cap the structure until you are dead. Zergs that get caught up on single players are poorly disciplined, they should always be going as fast as they can to the commander and/or the target.

The last case is something that no one can answer other than WM. I have played WvW with WM many times from when they were on SBI, and I can recall times where we would sit there and auto attack reinforced gates to death from as much as 50% ‘health’. No one expects the zerg to sit there and auto attack a gate to death, and it is a lot easier to focus siege on enemy siege, than it is to pick off a loose zerg that is using their skills on a gate.

WM and Jang Gun know how to play WvW, they’ve been at the top of T1 and played against most of the good guilds in the American server scene. No one in T1 ever accused WM of botting, perhaps it’s just the lower server players lack of understanding of WvW that results in this conclusion.

Your rhetoric is so full of kitten. Rather then keep spewing it, try actually running with their zergball. Also try to find them zerging with only WM and no random so you won’t be confused.

I don’t give a kitten about their history either. Maybe no one noticed before, maybe they just started recently, or maybe they really are braindead. Doesn’t matter, people are just stating their observations. I didn’t believe the claims either until I saw it for myself.

All someone needs to do to avoid being targeted is step to the side out of auto attack range. They can be literally standing next to the zerg just out of melee range or following right behind them attacking and they wont be touched (except by other randoms running with the zerg).

Have you ever noticed their zerg split up? Even when it makes sense to mop up and capture a circle? I haven’t. I don’t think they can.

I’ll post a video tomorrow so you or anyone else can draw their own conclusion on whether its bots or just braindead. It’s an almost pure WM zerg trying to take a camp from what starts at around 6 players and gradually builds up over 5+ minutes. All they need to do is split up and clear the circle but they can’t do it. They can’t even stop us from ressing the supervisor over and over. They keep running through like a blind bull ignoring everything except what’s in front of them and the only reason anyone’s in front of them is because the constant stealth culling abuse.

Ultimately they leave for no apparent reason while still heavily outnumbering us and still completely ignoring anyone who attack them from the side or behind while they’re leaving. If you think that’s organized and ‘being good at WvW’ I want to know who brainwashed you… Actually I’m surprised no one else has posted videos like this since I’m sure we have lots of clips like it.

For anyone on Maguuma or DB, try attacking their zergball from the sides or behind. The only people who will ‘see’ you are randoms tagging along with the zerg.

@the rest of Kaineng, nothing against your server as a whole. You have a whole lot of people and good coverage but almost no roaming presense and a very suspicious guild.

I was a little surprised when I logged in last night around 10pm (est) and there were only queues on 2 maps. Only two queues 3 hours after reset is even less than 3 weeks ago. Good news IMO, though not necessarily for this matchup.

About the current match, meh. As far as points are concerned, probably doesn’t matter how well we play in the day if we’ll lose it overnight as we sleep. Guess we’ll see how it shapes up on weekdays though.

Bugged queues or not, I saw almost no organization from Kaineng last night on their BL. If you hold only 1 tower on your home map maybe its going to seem like double teaming but DB was just as big a threat there or more, and also the first ones to break into the outer garrison.

Zerg server is one where everyone on each map travels in one big karma train zerg with a 1 dimensional strategy that expects to win because it has bigger guns and no one is willing or able to think for themselves. Right? Right so basically Crystal… or… nvm.

I’m not worred about Maguuma becoming a zerg server. At worst, we’ll go through a few lame matches going up till we meet higher competition in the higher tiers that will wash away anyone who doesn’t belong. Then we’ll have a few difficult matches going back down until we’re left with the same core, plus maybe a few more who have become Maguu-men (and women).

Well it’s true we’ve grown some in numbers as well. Last night after restart was the first time I ever saw full queues on every map.

So far I’ve seen good things from the guilds we gained so if we can keep the strong organization together that makes Maguuma what it is, I wouldn’t mind rising a tier or even 2.

Thief Mechanics

+1 to OP.

I’ve noticed even fighting 1v1 there’s always (or usually?) like 1 second of ‘culling’ when coming out of stealth where they basically get the first couple hits in before even appearing and it’s not that culling from large numbers of players on the screen.

Last night on my thief I took down 2 ballistas from full in the middle of about 6 people spamming all over. Took 5+ mins and I didn’t die. On the way out, a couple of them left, I killed 2 of the people (probably 1v3 don’t remember), and escaped with my life. Perhaps a little luck too but this shouldn’t really be possible to get away with, with that many people doing all they could to stop me. And this was not the numbers where true culling happens.

With my build now (not D/D), 1v2s are generally not difficult and 1v3s (lvl 80s) are very possible (depends on classes), given enough time.

Blind, block, and dodge rolls are soft counters that can prolong a fight but some harder counters are needed to stealth. Like a conditional mechanic that would bring them out of stealth (say if they took 20% of their total hp in that instance of being hidden).

At least disable the initial cast of Shadow Step while CCed because that just seems like a game breaking escape skill to me.

TL;DR: Reworking the stealth/escape mechanics on theif are needed. More lazy damage nerfs are NOT needed.

Lmao. Basically through a roundabout way you’re TRYING to argue mindless zerg tactics even lead to better score. They don’t, and you’re not winning from tactics, you’re blind and delusional if you think that. If you were fighting on our side and in a voice chat for even an hour you’d see that, I guarantee it. Until you drop some of your ego and open your eyes to realize that’s what’s holding you back as a server, and then TRY to start improving, you’ll be stuck fighting servers like Mag and Ebay for 2 weeks with your vastly superior manpower, oops I mean “determination”.

Here’s a scenario that will play out every night on every other tower: spending 100+ lives and ~15 pieces of (poorly placed) siege to take a tower with 8-10 defenders with your 30 man zerg. ONLY to lose it 5 mins later to 5 people because every single one of your zerg ran all the way across the map to take Ebay’s keep when you could have left a few people to start trebbing our last keep from that tower and saved an hour and uncounted lives… or at least held it with 1 man and an arrow cart which would have also cut off our only supply (at the time). And after finally taking our keep in an hour long battle, a repeat performance on that tower that you lost…

But no. Ignore the fact that we’re outnumbered 3 or 4 to 1 holding a keep and multiple towers (and retaking them) in EBG for 3 or 4 hours. Our ‘apathy’ vs your sheer determination is the reason you took them in the end! Ok, it’s more fun this way

Short version of my point…. players who don’t care about the score aren’t going to measure skill in the same way that a player going for points will.

Yea I see that’s your argument and it’s pretty simple. It’s just that the conclusion doesn’t follow. It could only be valid with a “win win win = better” mentality, which is yours and that’s fine (though ours is better :P).

To understand the Maguuma “epic fight” mentality (I hope it’s not exclusive to Maguuma), lets put it in a logical form because you seem to think there’s contradiction:

Premise 1: REGARDLESS OF THE WINNER, the most fun and epic WvW match ups are of 3 (or at least 2) evenly matched sides. The least fun (worst) WvW match ups are heavily lopsided, to the extreme of one side spawn camping on every map as this is bound to be an entirely pointless week of zero fun for all sides. I don’t care if you have the ‘must have braains cough score’ mentality, your not going to have much fun even when you own everything.

Premise 2: Winning in an epic WvW match up could mean next week is going to be a pointless fight. Most likely because your server can’t field the necessary numbers to compete. (Losing could have the same result but reversed.)

Conclusion: if we’re already fighting an epic match up that’s nearly tied for points, winning (or it could be losing) isn’t necessarily in our best interests if we want to keep fighting an awesome fight next week.

It’s a perfectly logical and actually very simple reason for not caring (or even not wanting) to win. The only contradiction, I assume, is in your own case accepting premise 1, since you don’t think a relatively evenly matched fight is actually the most fun.

And really, you can drop the silly pretenses about score = skill. Mindless zerg comments aside, everyone (on Ebay and Mag) knows CD is winning from sheer manpower. 6 Pm EST and we’re outnumbered in every borderland except our own, even in EBG just now losing our keep. Correct me if I’m wrong, that buff only happens when another side has 3 to 1 numbers, right?

Not even remotely.

Please outline why getting a higher score is a good thing for Maguuma.

My point is, that If you don’t try to win, you don’t put yourself in a position to EVER win. Because of this, it becomes easy for you guys to discount the score, but in the long run you’re not doing anything to get better in regard to what WvW is actually about. So while you’re having fun (which is great) and gaining more players who think the score doesn’t matter (which is only great if that’s the type of player you are) it’s never going to get you anywhere as a server. If you don’t care about the score, then I’m not going to “outline” why you should. I really don’t care how or why you play.

I’m just saying that unless you care about the points in WvW, you’ll never improve at gaining them. Nor will you gain many other players who care.

Lots of people like to win, lots care about the score. Not all are bandwagon players.

Fact is, try as hard as we can, we can’t beat CDs sheer numbers. There… is that the pat on the ego you wanted?

Maguuma does an amazing job with the numbers it has and I’m 99% sure if CD had identical numbers and coverage, well… We would have a fine demonstration of quality tactics and organization over quantity :P

The difference is not lack of trying as you mistakenly believe. It’s recognizing that, sure, it’s an uphill fight with no possibility of “winning”, simply by the numbers. But whereas for you apparently, that’s everything, for a lot of us, that’s nothing. It has zero effect on our motivation. In fact, being the underdog means it’s probably going to be an even better fight!

So while you see EBay starting to lose ground this week from what I assume is morale attrition, Mag is as ready as ever to kick kitten rack of kills and points, and chew bubblegum while we’re at it!

We’re comfortable fighting outnumbered, we don’t want or need to be a top tier server with massive numbers and queues because that’s not what makes WvW fun. I see and hear sentiments like this from fellow Maguumians all the time and that’s more of what they mean when you see “Mag doesn’t care about winning”.

Seems entirely unnecessary. There’s already a system in place where your drops are based on damage. If you just to a few hits like in PvE you’ll never get good drops. Pretty sure you would actually get less drops and badges with magic find gear in WvW.

Kind of an odd question if you ask me. Why play if not to win? But then, as I said different people enjoy different things. (shrug)

So you mean in your opinion only the server with the highest score (most people) should play?… Idk about you but I’ve had a lot more fun on the weeks we come 2nd or 3rd than on the rare times we’ve rolled across all the maps. Since a lot of people seem to share your mentality, there’s also a whole lot more people to kill, speically those endless CD zergs oh baby!

And just a funny unrelated 5 man ninja tour through CD’s EBG territory from last night/morning. Actually started defending Mendon’s and 4 camps, 1 tower later, we took SE keep with our main force

It’s clear that they are exploiting the culling/rendering bug, but ANET isn’t doing anything to fix it for WVWVW.

People always confuse perma stealth with culling… It’s completely different. They’re using combo field + leap to stay hidden 100% of the time. That’s not the issue. The issue is that they can prevent points from being capped while hidden and there’s no visual indicator of where they are.

I don’t know why they haven’t fixed it yet.

To qualify OP, I’m not sure about a sense of progress where things are going from “mindless zerg activity to thought out action.” The good players were thinking out smart uses for their classes and skills since day-1 while everyone else does whatever it is they do, regardless. Also, I’ve been on bottom tier, top tier and mid tiers (which I prefer) and the only difference for the most part is raw wvw numbers and coverage, not tactics. Certainly the former #1 HoD held their spot with numbers (including mindless zerg power!) and NOT special strengths in strategy or organization.

About classes fitting into roles, except for a few niches like mesmer portal, it’s not so clearly defined (which I think was one of the design principles).

I have theif and warrior but minus a couple great support skills, thief is pretty obvious and 1-dimensional tactics-wise so ill go into warrior.

GS mobile strikes warrior is actually more mobile than theif and with good awareness can do all the behind enemy lines work like disrupting supply or even soloing supply camps if left alone for 5 mins. But with stealth, theif is just king at disrupting supply lines.

Warrior can stat boost zergs with banners, shouts, and trait aura, or speed yaks with warhorn and banners. Longbow has 2 very good aoe skills for taking down siege on walls. And of course warrior is a great tank and burster. Rifle is a glass cannon (theif) killer. What else? Basically a warrior thinking ahead before the fight starts has tools to bring to every situation.

Have people across the maps that can communicate where they’ve gone. There’s a reason WvW is 4 maps and that is to allow for strategy.

You want a good fight but they want to win the battle and/or karma and exp. A lot of people in zergs are actually not very good and a “good” fight would mean they lose. If you have communication across maps you can catch them. Don’t rely just on your guild, rely on your server.

Come on !!! => Go make specific thread and leave wvw maps out of this. Don’t ask why wvw addicts will go on leaving your server if you are promoting such behaviour in not dedicated place like wvw maps. Spvp is more the place for a “fight club” and even if not, then request A-net to create some instance for your 1vs1 that we really don’t want to see in wvw. Thank you for your understanding.

In my opinion the biggest issues that need addressing if the system is staying, this if for WvW, I could care less about PvE:

1) speed of revive is far to fast, faster then the speed to stomp without quickness, which is just plain silly. Needs to be slowed down in WvW.

2) downed bar balance, major review required, with a focus on defense, not offense. Your downed, ie out of the fight. When my guildy asks us to not revive him cause he is doing insane damage, there is a problem.

3) no rally off pve mobs in wvw, no rally off of necro pets (if that still works)

4) I think you should get one less ‘revive’ before your instant killed the next time you die, in WvW

1) Factually incorrect…

2) Same as 1 and your guildy is bad.

3) No, it’s part of the environment and adds tactics and dynamics. I can’t count how many times this has saved me in a 2v1 3v1 Xv1 because I had something called awareness.

4) limiting the number of revives for each life would be interesting. In GW there was the “death penalty” that reduced your HP and gradually wore off with kills.

Well it might be nice for balance to limit the number of revivers to 1 or maybe 2 people max. But fast revives are really needed atm to counter theves invis stomp (coming from a WvW thief).
