I could have sworn that sorrow’s embrace was the most underplayed dungeon. I even forget it exists on the map most of the time.
I’ve been playing since November and I still haven’t had a reason to go there. It’s probably because the armor is hella ugly and the weapons are just red version of Asuran skins.
In all seriousness it really comes down to build, experience, and knowledge of the enemy class. I was literally in your shoes banging my head against the wall over getting rolled everytime I met a Thief. What I didn’t realize is I was getting better at fighting them and beginning to predict them. A few build tweaks and a butt load of practice later and I rarely run into a thief that can down me, nor survive my hard CC SD spike, and with my shiny new rocket boots they find it hard to get away/gap close without burning down their initiative.
Long and short I turtled up my build until I got good enough to kite them, and when I got good enough to kite them I eventually got good enough to kill them. The rest is just a blur of Badges of Honor, WxP, and the occasional repair costs for run ins with players who are just plain better than me.
…now if I could only repeat that learning process on D/D Ele’s I’d be set…
The only time I generally get rolled by them is when I’m in a small group and we’re capping a tower or depot and another group comes in to defend then I get FFed by the thief. Don’t usually see them beforehand, and then the backstab, etc, I’m dead. I don’t really have a problem with that, especially as I’m rolling around at lvl 79(now) in mid 60s greens and I don’t have a the fullest grasp on the class yet. My only problem is really with stealth itself and how it takes any so much vulnerability away from the class. I don’t know why anybody wouldn’t play a GC build on a thief when you have stealth as a defense(and offense). On my other characters, I don’t even bother chasing thieves anymore.

Helping you out. Btw I am a thief and engis(good ones) are even worse than guards to 1v1.
Thief damage is high. Too high.
Didn’t you face fresh air S/D eles? or actually shatter mesmers? They’ll take you down whitout even going stealth. And necros can burst equally high these days. To say that thieves burst is op isn’t only false, it’s outdated.
Thieves burst is OP because they can do it over and over with no danger of dying due to stealth abuse. Other classes need to commit if their combo is countered they are in the fight win or lose. Stealth mesmers can get away also but their reset time to abuse stealth is much longer then thieves they also do not have the movement skills.
This is exactly the issue. Thieves don’t have the vulnerability other classes have by being seen before they launch into their combo. And(as I’ve noticed), if they feel like they aren’t going to win the fight after 5 seconds, they will just stealth and run away.
The stealth traps in WvW aren’t the answer to this problem. They’re not used at all and stealth for WvW should really be reviewed.
Uhm, ever heard of AoE’s? If not, problem solved. Thieves are still vulnerable in stealth, but you just can’t see them. Its like trying to burn an invisible piece of paper. Any AoE spam around you or whoever they are attacking will discourage them to keep doing so, or they will die. Assuming the thief is running backstab, they are glass and need to get close to you, which means standing in your AoEs will rub them the wrong way.
Thieves running away shouldn’t be a problem for you, they gave up and accepted their defeat… Sure it’s annoying, but who really won the battle? So many people seem to have a problem with thieves, but how many of you actually tried the class? You’re asking Arenanet to nerf a class that you havn’t even tried. If someone whos never tried Engineer before started saying they were OP and need a nerf, broken class, etc. How would you react?
You can’t AoE every area after they stealth. The only way to know for sure is if they had stealthed in a small enclosed area, at that point, it was kind of dumb to stealth anyways. I’m not calling for a nerf to thieves, I could give a crap about them, however I think the stealth mechanics could be modified. Obivously Anet is aware of this problem because they took the time to implement those lame traps in WvW.
Maybe like every other game, direct damage could remove them from stealth? Maybe if they have conditions on them, you can see where the damage numbers are coming from without actually being able to target them, and you can still AoE the area?
Looking for some Sigil options for Axe and Focus weapon combo. Off the top of my head I can only think of Bloodlust/Force? What else is there?

Are there any good wvw power/condition hybrid builds out there? I’m thinking rifle/grenades? I’m getting sick of the flamethrower and its instant-death against people with retaliation, but I wanna keep my rampager’s gear lol. I kinda realized I probably should’ve gone with Soldier’s gear but I’m too poor to afford that lol.
You can also do AC or Hotw for Soldier’s gear. Hotw P1 is easy and fast, and AC P3 is pretty easy, P1 is ok with a decent group(avoid P2).
Eng and Wars built for control match up very well vs necros, exploit the classes weakness of no stun breaks and stability.
Actually necros have both stun breaks and stability.. this is engis weakness since last patch actually, and why lot of people dropped elix R.
Skills like well of power (similar to elixir c, plus stun breaker) and spectral walk, break stuns. Not to mention DS stability from 30 in soul reaping, which is not even necessary imo having such utilities.
Probably the only way to easily taking him down, is zerging him, like one class (warrior) using full cc utilities, and another one bursting him.. agree whit that one :PA necro that takes 30 in DS for stability is going to do very low condition damage and or have poor defense, its not the build people think is strong.
The stun breaks are on really long cooldowns and most necros dont take them other then spectral walk and thats normally already been used for movement speed, if the necro takes the stun breaks then condi pressure is going to be much lower.
I’m giving advice not here to argue or give false info, necro is easy to counter as the 1 v 1 tourny showed. CC or turrets builds do very well vs necros, burst spike can kill them if they are not working with a full bar of LF.
Its not an automatic faceroll victory for the eng vs a good necro however you will win more times then you lose with practice. Thief is the class for faceroll wins eng is the class that has a higher rewarding skill cap.
What this guy said^
I agree. I don’t see any reason to run story mode more than once per account. This post, however, might be better served in the “suggestions” forum.
Yeah, but that’s where topics go to die. Obviously Anet doesn’t read anything there.
However, I kind of hope this thread can develop into a discussion on whether it should be unlocked per account, or that SM needs to have better rewards for motivation.
I think one idea would be to make Story Mode(at least for the sub-80 dungeons) easier than it is already. A lot of people that are new to the game take issue with(and rightfully so) that the dungeons aren’t friendly for new people, and that there aren’t any dungeon options for lower levels because of this and poor scaling. SM could be a viable dungeon option that rewards a decent amount of XP(which it already does, and would be a decent reward if SM was easier). Also it would be a good way to “train” newer people to the techniques and mechanisms of the EXP mode dungeons.

“Let people play how they want to play” … definitely one of the more interesting attempts to justify exploiting I’ve heard. Kudos.
Anyway I mentioned in my second post on the the thread that it takes two to tango. The people who happily advertise to exploit this obviously broken path aren’t the only ones at fault. How this hasn’t been fixed yet is mind-boggling.
With that being said, can we expect a fix to this any time soon?
I don’t run CoF P2, but why would it bother you if other groups jump gates? As long as you don’t have to group with them I don’t see the point in being angsty about it.
When the risk/time/rewards of other players are out of whack with the norm it inflates the economy with easy gold. CoF also doesn’t actually balance itself between gold and high value goods to offset the gold generation. All it does is inject more liquid cash into the market which raises the cost of… everything. Players who then do not take advantage of an exploit to accomplish the same ends lag in terms of generating wealth on their account. This means they will take longer to get their legendary than if other people weren’t exploiting this.
Since it isn’t based in skill/effort/risk, it’s not a legitimate method of accomplishing higher rewards per unit time invested.
But a p1 CoF run is still faster right? Isn’t that the real problem with the economy? Amongst so much else.
I was looking for a thread about maybe why the materials/tiers are inconsistent?
Is it just because the devs realize that the market for certain things are saturated and they’re trying to artificially regulate the prices? Also did not realize that the only thing in these are recipes and quartz, that’s hardly going to regulate kitten.
Not really regulate. Just drain off excess supply. Similar to the boxes near launch that created the mystic forge conduits.
It seems they still haven’t figured out how to add a permanent sink for these items yet.
Not sure if they really need a permanent sink. That will just make these kind of things expensive all the time. Or the sink will just become obsolete all the time. Temporary sinks work just fine really.
They really need to do 1 of 2 things then. Make the other middle tier mats easier to get, OR reduce the mats required for crafting those tiers so that(for example) crafting T2 items aren’t more expensive than T4.

I’ve completed story mode for several dungeons on my characters, but not every character has completed SM for every dungeon that I run. Often times there will be issues with trying to get in certain dungeons due to people also not having it finished, then we either have to disband or switch characters to ones that we didn’t really want to play in the first place.
I’m not sure what the bigger issue is, the fact that SM doesn’t reward much, or that it’s boring and there’s no incentive to do it again on alts because you’ve already done it on another character. I think a solution would be to unlock EXP mode if you have completed SM on any character on your account. That way we only have to run it once and never worry about which character has what unlocked and just play how we want to.
What you can do is run the dungeon on your lvl 80 and switch at the end to get the exp on your noob char. Usually you need to switch before the boss is dead or have somebody watch the cinematic(if the movie is long enough). Also need to make sure your char is right outside the instance ready to go in.
Make sure that you weren’t the one that created the dungeon, because due to Anet’s flawless logic, you will boot everybody from the instance because of their “instance creation” mechanic.
Just LoS the spiderlings around the corner and stack. It’s not an exploit and it’s the easiest way to kill queen. Helps if you have a water field up too.
I also tried Cleansing formula 409 with elixir b and h. It was terrible ^^. If the necro equips corrupt boon you’re pretty much screwed with elixir b.
On another note: Does the Ds teleport thing work if you dodge it ? or do you just avoid the chill ?
Most Necros aren’t carrying corrupt boon anymore, for what it’s worth.
And if you dodge the hand you cancel the teleport, the chill, and the 3 stacks of bleed. If it hits you you get all that plus they’ll start stacking torment immediately. So it’s an important dodge.
That’s what I was about to say, most necros don’t carry that around anymore.
They should absolutely not be removed. If anything their cost should be increased.
If you allow people to never be in the world, they won’t. If waypoints were free you would never see anyone out in the world, because people would just port to where they want to go.
The fact that it is costly means you are more likely to see people out in the world because they don’t want to use their precious coins. This is an MMO. It wouldn’t be an MMO if you never saw other people.
Just look at WoW. Because of the flying mounts(and the fact that you have no reason to go outside of a city) you will never see anyone out in the open world.
Does that sound like an MMO experience to you?
This doesn’t make any sense at all. I think he was saying the opposite actually.
People might do events if the monetary rewards were at least the cost it took you to travel there. Right now dungeons are much more lucrative and only cost the WP fee to get there once(I use WvW to get back to LA).
Side Note: If CoF P1 ever gets fixed, I think a lot of the gold sinks could be reevaluated, but right now the economy is all effed up because of it.
Elixir H, Elixir B, Elixir S, and the trait Cleansing Formula 409. That gives you plenty of condition removal and a stunbreak with access to stability(with 50% chance).
As far as the killing part, I would imagine a power rifle build or even a turret build might do the trick?
HGH is terribly overrated and viewed as powerful, when in fact it’s strength lies in how brain dead easy it is to execute and win. Once I left HGH I tried to go back a few times, but I couldn’t, I felt handicapped.
Care to elaborate?
runs away unless they outnumber the opposition
Can’t imagine anybody from TC knows how that feels.
Am I the only one having these issues?
“Place among the top three racers in Sanctum Sprint”
I have placed 3rd twice now and I have not received this achievement.
Somehow, I’ve managed to get 14/15 Frequent Sprinter, and 15/25 Crowd Favorite, how would I have 1 more completed races if I’ve only ran 14?
———————————————————————
Other than those achievements(I’m sure some of the others are bugged too), there’s been a few issues with the race in general.
For one, the lightning leap is rather inconsistent when you’re using it to leap to those predetermined points. Sometimes it seems if you hit it to fast it just makes you start over from the last checkpoint or sends you directly to the ground.
Another issue is when you fall off or whatever else and end up at the checkpoint. Sometimes your character does this awkward squat thing like it’s trying to take a dump in a hole(during which, you cannot move) and other times it’s normal.
Also it really feels like you’re falling too long before it decides to reset you to the checkpoint. It should just port you back after you miss your jump.
This matchup blows. They need to keep the high pop servers against eachother no matter how stale it gets. Maybe TC can WvW against themselves while they roleplay mindless zergs?
I’m looking for a “guide” that’ll suggest what builds are effective for the different roles in WvW. I scoured the first few pages and see several different builds, some w/ explanations and others w/ little detail other than a vid.
I’m looking for the Masks, Drakecos, Ukinis and Shanks, to tell us a bit about why they run what they currently run. Pros and cons of their respective traits/gear. Thoughts on each others builds. Their ideal setups.
Ex:
Build name: Alkaholics Anonymous
Role: Havoc Squad
Spec: HGH Elixir chugger
Pros: Permasprint, condi burst, fast paced.
Cons: Vulnerable to condis, low survivability
Also, maybe you could provide a link to your build(at least traits/utilities)? This thread interests me as I’ve been searching around for some WvW build ideas.
And we all know how stable and fast it is… /sarcasm.
rather no tool than another tool running in that kitten awesomium browser.
So true.
Hell, what if they just had a button in game that would open your computer’s browser to a subdomain off their main site which ran an “official” version of gw2lfg.
I don’t know what about the tool is taking so long. The TP already runs off of web-like technology and www.gw2lfg.com has been up for a few months now.
I always sigh when I see these complaints/threads.
I cannot stress the importance of joining like minded groups on gw2lfg.com. Please use the icons for a speed run or completion run, or write in the field what type of run it is. Completionists are always going to kitten about the speed runners, and the speed runners are just going to find a new group because it’s easier.
Not sure if you read the post, but it’s about an exploit where you jump over the gate, not the usual skipping past mobs, which is why skipping is in quotes.
Speed runners often times use exploits or other means to make the dungeon run faster. This post could have been avoided if the OP grouped with other completionists instead complaining about something that wouldn’t have affected him otherwise.
I am much more understanding of running through/skipping trash mobs, and I think that this is a way speed runs can be distinguished from a more casual and/or completionist run. A key difference between skipping the trash mobs and the boss exploits I mention above is that the trash mobs can still do damage to your group, still knock you down, and kill you. If you choose to skip, you need to keep with the group, know exactly where you’re going, when to dodge etc.
If you want to maximize your group potential/DPS and get through the dungeon quickly with experienced players that’s fine. I do not agree, however, with using obvious exploitive tactics to do it.
To kind of reiterate what I said earlier, I would just tell your group how you plan on completing the dungeon before you actually start it. That way you can find a new group or people can leave if needed.
That being said, it’s kind of dumb to use the stairs on the P1 boss because it’s so much quicker to kill him the normal way. The only time I’m really ok with using the stairs is if the PUG is so full of fail that they aren’t able to kill the boss normally after 1-2 wipes and I really just want to complete the dungeon instead of disbanding. I have no problems with using the pillar on P3 though. That boss is kind of a mess for PUGs and I don’t even bother with P2.
When you look for a group, find like minded players and don’t join speed run groups. State this in the message on gw2lfg.com or when people join. Completionists and speed runners need to stop partying with each other.
Problem solved.

Not to derail the thread or anything, but honestly the problem rests on Anet’s shoulders. The more they nerf the profitability of open world farming, the more and more people are going to run dungeons for gold. Of course some people are going to run dungeons for the tokens anyways, but for a lot of people dungeons are the best source of gold vs time investment right now.
Also, once they nerf CoF P1, this problem is only going to get worse because the people who run dungeons for gold are just going to look for the next best way to get it.
Without expansions….does that mean we won’t get new classes or skills? My god the skills are getting really old by now. Especially when many classes have weapons that they all avoid.
It costs 68g alone for the bloods on a zerker backpiece. Seems a little silly to me.
I agree.
I was on my way to the zerker backpiece until they nerfed the skelk farm during the SS event. Unfortunately, I just lost interest after that and I gave up on it because I don’t enjoy Fractals at all either(even though I have the piece needed to make it).
The karma idea makes sense really. It seems like they are kind of trying to push people into events and things which already reward karma so why not? The other problem is that even the exotic versions are hard to come by. There’s the karma options from the temple vendors, the fractal one that takes too long, and then the extremely rare dungeon drops. Either way, there’s not enough stat options for the pieces obtained outside of Fractals.
First of all i would buyout ArenaNet from NCsoft and give them full independence to what they create.
i have a bad news for you.
Anet claims continually to be really independent on GW2.
So they are the only responsible for any success or failure.
Except for that whole Cantha thing right?
When they stated that rangers would be in Guild Wars 2, they did stat that the use of a pet is necessary for to access the full potential of the class. If you remember, they don’t care what other games do. Their vision of classes is how they pictured them to be. Rangers here use pets, and are one with nature. If you do not want to be one with nature then do not choose a ranger and leave us alone for not being what you expect.
Expectations only lead to disappointment.
Like expecting the class to function properly? Expecting the broken mechanic to be fixed or replaced?
Sometimes I feel like all of these pet advocates are more about the aesthetics of the pet instead of caring whether or not it functions. Go buy some minipets if that’s the case.
This idea would fix the core difference between ranger and other classes. Our class mechanic is currently an essential part of our class, but for all other classes the class mechanic is an additional part for the class.
I actually really, really don’t like that idea at all. A part of why I chose the Ranger is because of the constant companion at my side. If that became reality, I would likely completely lose interest in my Ranger which is my main character.
The constant companion is something you take on when you choose Ranger — every class has one definable thing that makes them stand out. If the Ranger lost that, it would lose one of it’s biggest purposes. “Summoning” the pet would be terrible and holds the same idea as the Necromancer has for skills. That would completely nerf the Ranger I think.
That’s the just the problem though. The pet is a forced class mechanic for Ranger, and it’s broken. You say that you would lose interest in the class without it, but many other players already have because the class is so broken around this terribly functioning AI disaster(the pet).
@ Chopps Spirits had never 40k Hp
but in a dream ….
On the order of means “a factor of ten higher” in an estimate. I always thought it was in the 10k range like a normal player’s health. I think a bear is 40k health fwiw. I don’t know I don’t really use spirits except in dungeons vs mobs using vigorous spirits and they tend to survive those encounters. All i know is 4000 seems awfully low. Also just because I guess at something that ISNT SHOWN by anet in tooltips doesn’t mean I’m wrong about everything. I’d kick your kitten up and down the sidewalk in pvp ranger v ranger no doubt. See who knows more then?
Lol do you realize all of your responses are “I’m guessing their HP is around this number because that’s what it seems, and I’m not wrong because I’ll pwn you in PvP!” ?
Are all of your facts based on whether you can pwn somebody in “ranger v ranger pvp”? But keep on with the responses though, it’s moderately entertaining.
The only thing that really needs to happen is that pet damage needs to be decreased and coefficients increased across the board on Ranger skills. The pet should be utilitarian, you shouldn’t be totally dependent on it for basic DPS.
I’ve said that before – but Anet is hung up on “The ranger and his pet are one”. I’d love to have the stupid NPC removed from our damage calculation (I’ve said extremely disparaging things about the people who used the x/x/30/x/30 build and letting a poorly coded AI npc be your source of damage.)
Personally, I’ve never been big on using the shortbow, but I included that purely because of the amount of forum crying about it. And it is a simple enough fix – extend the 5% damage to shortbows as well.
Pillager, I don’t care if they break the animations for it, pets should hit at 300 range, while moving. Most of the attack animations would work fine while moving anyway – the bulk of them amount to bite/swing paws about.
1,000 times this.
Other than being extremely stubborn, I don’t know why Anet just doesn’t give Rangers an ability that allows them to stow their pets until the player actually summons it back(instead of it coming back during combat). While the pet is stowed, Rangers should regain whatever the damage coefficient it is that the pet would normally take away from the Ranger.
Anet really is just too stubborn to give up the poorly coded AI mess that is the pet. They know and have always known that if they gave players a more controllable way to stow their pets that most players wouldn’t use them in the first place. Besides the fact that Anet isn’t the best at AI programming, the concept of dungeons with dodging red circles probably won’t ever work with the pet…ever. They will have to figure something else out in order to make rangers viable in dungeons, or just give up on it altogether I guess.
The thing that most bothers me is that the boss fights are really really easy, but you have to stay there, hitting them for 10 minutes, dodge a skill here, dodge another there. Boring fights
Pretty much this.
GW1 didn’t have dungeons. Maybe if you wanted to call them alternate zones with higher than average mob density?
Id examine your teams DPS/Builds if these bosses feel too long.
If you trait tanky, play support roles, use subpar weapons/sigils/gear why would you expect them to drop fast? Just because its play how you want, doesnt meant results wont vary if you dont have a correct team formation with organization.
That’s just it though. I was examining our party because it did feel really long, and we had a mes, a zerk warr, an ele, a zerk guard, and a thief. Not sure what gear they had but I was in full exotics/ascended, but I imagine it couldn’t be that bad. These bosses just have unnecessarily more HP or are more boring than other bosses in the game.
I always felt that the issue was that there are too many bosses in the HoTW paths. The boss fights are really easy though. The Jormag comparison is a bit of an exaggeration lol :P
Having said that, I don’t think there is any change needed though.
Yeah like I said, the difficulty and everything is fine, just so long and boring. It’s not difficult that he takes forever to kill, just gets old. Remember, there’s no energy management in this game so there’s not too much of a reason for a single boss encounter to last that long.
This is kind off topic, but since there’s so many great minds contributing to this thread, which offhand sigil do I want for Scepter/Dagger weapon set? What are some good choices of sigils in general for necros?
What kind of trait setup do you have and gear. If you have terror / burning, you might want to look into Sigil of Paralyzation, to increase your fear duration back up.
If more old school condition necro, rabid gear, then you’ll probably want a Sigil of Earth for bleed procs, and corruption off hand. If you have carrion style gear, then you have more choices in sigils, Battle, Geomancy, or several others even are often chosen.
Carrion/Rabid mix, mostly Carrion though with Rabid weapons. 30/30/10 and I do have 1 Sigil of Earth atm.
This is kind off topic, but since there’s so many great minds contributing to this thread, which offhand sigil do I want for Scepter/Dagger weapon set? What are some good choices of sigils in general for necros?
There were many topics about HoTW bosses having insane HP pools making the fight long and boring as hell… but it was over 6 months ago, and up to this day nothing changed.
Wow, that’s surprising!
I realize that very few players run Hotw anymore, but some(most) of the bosses just seem to have too much HP. I don’t mind the difficulty and the mechanics, etc, I think all of those are fine, it just takes really long and gets kind of stale after awhile. P2 and P3 are rather long anyways but especially the end boss in P1 seems like he takes longer to kill than Jormag. Anybody else notice this?
The best part of the pull is that it’s really just an easy way to kill all of the poison spitting spider adds without having to worry about the queen’s poison pools. Even if I had to kill the queen out in the open, at least the spiders would be dead first.
Time and time again I see people complaining about using certain tactics whether they’re for/against them. Please for the love of Trahearne’s ego can you just make sure you post clearly into gw2lfg.com what type of group you are looking for and abide by people’s wishes if they’re also looking for certain types of players? For example, if you’re new, make sure you tell people that when you join a group or looking for one, or if you want only 80s, or if you’re looking for experienced players. I’ve run AC so many times that it’s just really stale and I’m tired of the bugs/inconsistency so when I run into some of these completionist people, it’s super annoying.
TL;DR Use the kitten icons and text fields on LFG so you can pug with like minded people. Only join groups if you fit into what they’re looking for.
I switched to the 20/0/30/20/0 last night and ran Hotw p1. It seems to be pretty decent. I have more damage and I heal just a tad more. Taking the 10 points out of Radiance did drop my crit % just below 60%, but I’m ok with that. Haven’t played my guardian in awhile, but even with over 2k toughness I feel like he takes too much damage sometimes, maybe I just need to dodge more.
Can anybody confirm?
