Without knowing their reasons for change, I don’t see how we can judge the change. And, for the most part, Anet isn’t sharing their reasons.
I think it would be nice of patch notes would include not just changes, but notes behind the rational for changes.
I think this might help diffuse some of reactions people have to them.
For once I might agree with you…even as unlikely as this suggestion is. However, it really may not help anything at all if they just keep on making changes their customers aren’t happy with.
This brings me to my next point. This last update has caused the most serious negative feedback both on the forums and in game since launch. By far and away more people are unhappy with this latest patch than any other one. Yet Anet hasn’t said kitten about it. Ever wonder why?
My theory is that this decision came down from NCsoft. Look at the Cantha thread. They’re not saying kitten about that stuff either. Anet usually would respond to something that has created so much negative feedback if it was their decision. We all know now about the Cantha problem and what happened there. This probably isn’t too different. NCsoft probably suggested this or told Anet to create something grindy for the hardcore gamers or lose them.
This also segues nicely into another point. This game is not GW1. This game has a different audience. I know the loyal GW1 people are mad and they have every right to be, but you also have to realize that GW1 appealed to far fewer people than mainstream MMOs did. I know GW1 wasn’t really an MMO but GW2 is. Because of this, GW2 will not be immune to problems that plague modern day MMOs. One day GW2 is going to tank really hard, just like every other game. Hell, this last update could be the climax of the downward spiral, who knows. This happens to every MMO, but GW2 is free so it might just take longer.
Only thing removing the trinity ever did was not having to go out of your way to search for a tank or healer.
Yeah I guess that’s kind of the point really. If you want to take a general glance at the classes compared to other games, there’s not too much that makes them unique outside of the pet classes being useless(if using pets).
I understand what Anet was trying to do with the game, but I can’t help but wonder if this is the best execution of getting rid of the trinity.
Imo, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the trinity and “roles” in the first place, but I think the issue is that people don’t like waiting for a good tank or healer and that most people just want to DPS. Now that people have that playstyle(everybody DPS’s in a dungeon) is it really what you wanted?
If it reverts the changes made on Sept 3rd(minus runes of the traveler) I might look forward to it. Otherwise nahh.
Seriously this rune needs an explanation because all of the changes make very little to no sense.
Agreed, and what’s worse is that it’s still in my armor. It should have become unsocketed with the patch.
I’m downloading another game right now.
Which one? I need a new game too, 2 friends of mine just quit, and I don’t feel like putting up with Arenanet’s kitten.
I’m checking out Rift again. It’s f2p now and I had originally played it when it was first released and never did get max level. I’m not expecting miracles or anything but it will provide some entertainment in the meantime as opposed to just being frustrated with GW2.
2 weeks right…. if you have infinite money.
lolololol
And that’s just for 1 weapon! Holy crap. Everybody reroll a rifle engie or staff ele right now!
Sure it is.. if you’re not making a legendary.
you cant even buy obsidian shards with bauble bubbles anymore.
Go do some events. They are what gives the best karma. Things are back as they should be in the world of karma.
With nothing valuable to buy with it of course.
(even more so now that exotic weapons are junk)
Me and some friends decided to quit GW2 l will talk about it in this post. This game was very friendly to who wants to play with alterns. I have 5 level 80 characters with full exotic sets. I got 8 exotic armor sets, lots of exotic weapons and 9 trinket sets. Because I like to play with different classes and different builds. I mostly play in wvw. I done with pve when I have got my armor sets from dungeons. Now I have enough gold and Badge of Honor for more sets. Honestly I don’t like map complation, living world events an other pve things. I like to try new builds and classes in wvw. Also I had plans for 3th exotic set for my ranger and 2nd exotic set for my guardian. I bought a bank slot for these lots fo sets.
We have a small guild consist of wvw players not zerg members. We generally do small party raids and duels at wvw. We have lots friends in other servers also they like duel in wvw too. So me and my guild mates have lots of alterns for fun in wvw and duels. We like to play this game in that way. So we don’t farm loots in both pve and wvw in zergs.
When they anounced first ascended trinkets we didn’t support this idea but we can handle with it. Personally I only bought 5 ascended amulets for my alterns for their new sets. This is effected our play stlye but not much honestly. After wvw xp things appeared and they said this is character bound. This was also bad thing because I play with 5 characters at wvw. But we can handle with it too. However now there is a full ascended vs full exotic comparison at wvw. This game started to force people for play one character. This is not a good news for players like me. After the last ascended update me and my guild mates decided to quit GW2. Because this is enough for us! Before that patch I had goals like achieve some nice pvp finishers for use in wvw and buy some finishers from trade post. I liked to work for that. I still like this game but this is about react to ArenaNet for their attitude against to players who like to play alterns and wvw players. There is a lots of pve contents but they give little things for wvw players like masteries. I’m sure there is a lots of wvw players they look forward to their flame ram masteries lol. In conclusion our fun understanding and playstyle ruined with these all patches. [JUMP] is leaving. So I agree with the topic. Thanks for funny hours (more than 1.3k hours for me). GW2 was a nice game for us. Sorry for bad english.
Yeah I’m pretty much in the same boat. If GW2 wants to be a modern MMO, it’s going to have to have the lifespan of a modern MMO. One year, it was a good run. This is what happens when you cut corners for time sink instead of engaging content.
I’m downloading another game right now.
I guess there’s no official response yet.
ETA: This is what I’m talking about.
Hey all, no worries, we got you covered.
Weapons, armor and trinkets with magic find will become account bound, lose their current stats and will gain the ability to be double-clicked to select one of several stat options depending on the item.
For example, if you have an Explorer’s Pearl Staff, you can now double-click it to change it to any other crafting stat.
We will have a blog post about it with more extensive information as well, keep an eye on the website.
(edited by Zindrix.1750)
i was about to ask the same, wasnt supposed that they will go account bound?
That’s what was posted in the MF thread by a dev.
First of all, if you have MF runes/sigil of luck socketed in your gear, it’s still in there whether you want the new stats or not(that’s bullcrap).
Secondly, I read that the gear was supposed to be account bound, yet it’s still soulbound to my character.
Probably should have let people change their runes to any of the ones they wanted just like the gear. The new sigil of luck is horrible, and so are the pirate and noble runes.
Semantics.
Blah, blah, blah, grindy, boring, time gated, time sink.
Better?
Don’t worry guys, Anet is making sure this game will be like every other korean MMO. You get 1 character at max level and 1 set of gear. Then you never play a 2nd character unless you buy a 2nd account. Guild Wars 1 be dammed.
There was a lot of things I didn’t like about GW1, but I did love not having to grind my kitten off for gear.
what? you had to grind your kitten off for gear in gw1 too………kurzick? luxon? obsi? some of the other ones that had high material lists? XD
Those were for skins. For max stats you could just get the regular stuff for 1 plat.
true, very true, but who is fine with being a mindless zombie, one of the horde XD
I guess the point is that we won’t even have that choice in GW2 since we will have to grind for max stats(ascended).
Personally, I barely did any of the pve in GW1 and mainly just did PvP so I wasn’t a big skin fiend in the first place. Also, I feel like GW2 has a lot of the same armor designers from the first game and most of the time they get hung up on gimmicky cartoonish ideas for armor instead of making them look like proper sets of armor. They should hire some fashion designers and not cartoonists.

No for all of you that have a disagreement on the ascended stuff. How many of you own an ascended item? We knew back in November they were going to keep adding ascended to the game, if you was against it, then you shouldn’t have gotten any in the time frame because it is against your playing style, correct?
Incorrect, very.
See, the reason I have Ascended stuff is the same reason I hate it: It offers an objective and significant advantage over exotic.
I’m forced to have it to keep up, or I’m at a disadvantage. That’s the problem with ascended. If they were simply exotic stats with an infusion slot most people wouldn’t give a kitten: Get them for fractals, don’t get them if you don’t wanna do fractals.
As is, they offer a significant advantage over exotic, forcing anyone that wishes to remain competitive to go for them. Remove that and I’d happily ignore them.
I agree with this. A lot of people just say “you don’t have to get them” but if you want to stay competitive you kind of have to, especially in WvW.
If they were smart about it, they wouldn’t give the weapons a base damage increase. However, I’m sure they will because they fail at making compelling content so here we go with the gear grind cop out.
Will you trolls ever learn to read statements all the way through rather than taking things out of context?
People will ease up on taking it out of context when it stops getting this kind of passionate, emotional reply. It’s very good bait to work people up and fog the issue, distract people from addressing the actual heart of the argument and only focus on details.
It’s a known, accepted, debate topic.
… Pretty sure that whole Manifesto argument was quelled when Vayne told everyone off with multiple sources to official dev interview and statements, even a blog post addressing the manifesto shortly after it was created, before the game was even out.
It wasn’t quelled, because the sources that Vayne mentioned did not say what he claimed they said. Some of them even directly contradicted what he claimed they said.
I think at this point it is fairly obvious what they say and what they do are 2 different things now. They probably didn’t want to add in this kind of time sink, but they don’t have the right content(horizontal progression) to keep people interested, and this is basically a cop out.
K so two ways they can make money off this release and time gating:
Making people play more, thus more chances of them buying something.
Impatience leading to buying gems to convert to gold to buy said items.
So that’s two things for making money out of the patch. There’s three things that will harm the gem store with the release.
What are those? Just curious. They always add more junk every patch hoping people will buy some of it.
Skill variety
Ritualists
Jade Quarry
Fort Aspenwood
No gear creep
Yeah Lucem, builds (should) differ in stat allocation, not the sum of stats. Meaning, everyone should have the same sum/pool of stats, but how they choose to allocate them can/should differ.
Ascended gear, makes the sum/pool of stats differ (and allocation differs like always)… which means some people will have 110 points (say) versus some people that have 100 points.
It’s not bad when it’s easily acquired and everyone is once again with the same sum/pool of stats… but when it’s prolonged for no apparent reason….
… where the kitten did the post go… (deleted?)
I don’t think they would do that, but there’s another post around here titled “Fixing Ascended Gear” that has some good ideas in it.
ETA: Here’s that post: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Fixing-Ascended-Gear/first
There’s not going to be an expansion because they’ve wasted all their development resources on LS. This has been obvious.
Incorrect, On numerous occasions they have stated they have 4 Living Story Teams as well as a couple much larger teams, working much larger projects that have not been announced yet. They have plenty of resources being dedicated to things other than LS.
And you believe that? They probably have a few vague ideas of what they want to do next, but the proof is in the pudding. They didn’t even know until now whether or not they planned on having expansions! Don’t you think if they actually had anything they would have thought harder about how they were going to release it?
My guess is that the LS was mildly successful so far but a lot of people want more permanent content(which they say they’re working on) and they haven’t really started this on a large scale quite yet so it might be awhile. They have started working on new skills and maybe some “mini-zones”, but I don’t think we’ll see any new classes for a long while(if ever), or more than 1 new area released at a time.
wha, conjures are super fun, just would be nice if you still got all your other attunement spells while they were equipped or something.
They may be “super fun” but the whole concept of the class shouldn’t be based around it like many on this forum now seem to think. Instead of realizing how broken this is, they’re just like “LH or go home!”.
Let’s just try and get the class fixed instead; it worked for necros.
There’s not going to be an expansion because they’ve wasted all their development resources on LS. This has been obvious.
I’m beginning to wonder if Anet has even considered the impact of all of this “vertical progression”(read: time sink). Ascended weapons will no doubt have higher stats than normal weapons, but they will also probably have higher base damage. This has an even greater impact on the differences between someone geared in full exotics vs full ascended gear.
The issue with this is what happens when you want to change your build? What happens if you dual wield 2 sets of weapons so you need 4 for just 1 build? What happens if you play more than 1 character? 2 characters? 3 characters? There have been other changes that haven’t been alt-friendly and that’s fine, but I think this is becoming too much. I can’t keep up with gearing all of the characters or builds that I play.
I realize people are just going to say “you don’t HAVE to get ascended gear”, but I like to play WvW and it’s silly to think that people are running around in gear that is 10-20% more effective than mine just because they play 1 character and I play 7.
Ascended Gear has already killed build diversity and alts in WvW. I’m 10% stronger with my warrior (I don’t play anymore). 10% increased damage will have a huge effect on the outcome of a battle in WvW, especially in small squads. Not to mention you’ll be 20 percent stronger with buffs. Ascended Gear and buffs have no place in PvP.
If you actually played you would have realize that ultimately ascended gear doesn’t affect WvW in the slightest. People love making justification about whatever, but it doesn’t affect WvW more so than the lack of build diversity and the in balance of classes.
You could argue that 1v1 in WvW it might affect, but the game is definitely not balanced for 1v1. And most of the time you are getting streamroll by a zerg anyways. in a ZvZ ascended gear isn’t going to be the deciding factor.
the biggest issues that affect power are all on the spvp side, everywhere else they are factors that supersede ascended gear.
Most people are on high pop servers. I am not. Zerg v zerg doesn’t happen on every server. People need to stop with this misconception.
I for one welcome ascended weapons and armor. its not a huge gap and gives me and others something to do in the building up of a character however slight it may be. And really its not game breaking.
Do you WvW? Do you have more than one lvl 80? People that do are usually the ones that have this issue. If you have 1 character and just run Fractals 24/7 as god and Anet intended, then I guess everything is fine!
Level scaling still combats this problem in PvE – if level scaling did make it to a point where you get limited by the max gear for a specific dungeon. For example, what if all dungeons scaled down so that all gear choices higher than exotic will be scaled down to exotic? That way, ascended won’t necessarily have that much impact to PvE, and only affects high-level fractals and Arah.
It also affects WvW.
There are diminishing returns. Adding 10 power when you have 100 power is not the same as adding 10 power when you have 1,000 power. As you increase power, eventually you reach a point where the increase is only marginal. I believe that there was a thread many months ago with stating this but with toughness.
Theres no dminishing returns in GW2. Period.
Adding 10 is adding 10 power and incresing you damage for that 10 power for same amount whatever your start point is.
The effect of that 10 power is less the more of it you have. Some people just don’t understand relative increases I guess.
Some people don’t understand the increase of weapon base damage having a greater effect on overall attack damage.
Guys, this thread will get deleted if you keep talking about GW1 farming. That’s not what it’s about.
people forgot that LH needs a guardian to take you alive.
And sorry if as an ELEMENTALIST player i refuse to see as the ONLY viable PvE profession, swinging a HAMMER in melee with all my skills and many utilities locked out.
Churning earth given the CD and the cast time is horrible.
People says mesmer has low dps.
Elementalist without hammer or FGS+wall has almost half f it with half survivability. It just has the best cond cleansing around for PvE that is really handy in few situations, but ele needs much more…..expecially in sustained damage.
And i hope devs will stop the conjured nonsense.
It can be viable but its not what elementalists players wants to play.“Is it fun?”
NO!What does that mean?
It would be like “I’m a Warrior but I like only maces, shields and hammers, I’m full zerk I do no damge wtf”.
You cannot come out and say “Elementalist is the weakest class” when you refuse to use some of its core mechanics.
I mean, you could, but it would be proof of you being not so smart.
Is it really this common for eles to be jaded so much about the class that they believe Lightning Hammer for ample damage is ok?
I have a lvl 80 ele but I don’t play him much anymore even though he was probably the character I enjoyed most. I kind of gave up when I realized how much more damage other classes I have could do with much less cost to their survivability. Imo, eles shouldn’t have to cling to conjured weapons for adequate damage, that is just silly. Reading ele forums and seeing everybody say “use LH or go home” just leads me to believe everybody has given up and this is the class now: Lightning Hammer.

Even so, she is ignoring the fact that the weapon could have a higher base damage anyways, which is multiplied by power for your overall attack.
You have to keep in mind, when ascended weapons and armour comes out, it isn’t just their stats that will increase. The weapon damage and defence stat will be higher as well.
An ascended greatsword might have a damage range of 1090-1200 on top of the higher stats.
That’s what I was saying, but some people still didn’t understand or read it.
LOL, you know what i find hilarious? The fact that ascended was first meant to be so you could handle doing higher levels fractal, but anet hasnt touched fractals since their release. In fact, they completely ignored them in their dungeon “revamp”.
I have a feeling ascended will be needed for more then fractals because they seem to not even care about fractals at this point.
What about people who don’t like Fractals and just want the higher stats? Anet seems not to care about those people either.
Fractals are a poor attempt at a classic “endgame”. GIVING MOBS/BOSSES MORE HEALTH DOESNT MAKE IT HARDER ANET.
And whats the point in having higher stats if there is nothing to use it on?
WvW.
Like you said, Fractals aren’t harder, just more annoying and takes longer which is why I don’t do it.
And WvW is 90% zerging, where having ascended instead of exotics really wont matter.
Please, my server is extremely low pop, especially in WvW. There’s zerg sometimes, but rarely. Even then I like smaller groups of 5-15 more so than the zergy stuff.
So I have a full set of exotic MF gear with superior runes of noble, pirate and sigils of luck. Also trinkets with exquisite opals. What happens to the upgrades in my gear if the stats are going to change? Will they be unsocketed or am I SOL?
LOL, you know what i find hilarious? The fact that ascended was first meant to be so you could handle doing higher levels fractal, but anet hasnt touched fractals since their release. In fact, they completely ignored them in their dungeon “revamp”.

People as always overreact. The same was happening when they released ascended trinkets..We won’t see anytime soon highter tier than ascended, by that time everyone will get it.
As for alts i don’t have any in current state but i do plan to make them and guess what? I will be running them in exotics as i don’t see the point why i should put ascended gear on something i barely use anyway.
As for cof old times, i been running them with ppl that dindt had a single ascended trinket and noone complained about it, nor i don’t rebember anyone getting kicked for that reason. And i did over 1000x runs
I could care less about ascended gear for the horribly designed dungeons in this game(which is also why I don’t have ascended rings from fractals). However, the combination of stats from weapons/trinkets and eventually armor will be significant enough in WvW, which is what I enjoy doing.

They’ve been saying that this was going to be added since they introduced the fractals. This is not new news. The good thing is it’s craftable, but what we don’t know is whether it’s going to be really really hard to get the mats for it. It’s not a gear treadmill if you don’t actually need it to complete anything in pve. If they increase the fractal level or have new boss mobs that use agony, then it might be necessary. They’ve been saying they want more interesting fights. I wonder if this is somehow part of the plan.
It’s probably a time sink to keep people in the game.
Ironically enough I know a few people that still run around in rares on their alts. I mean everyone has a main toon they like the most. Also I think exos and rares will drop in price, but only ones that sre 2.5g+
I agree, I have full exotics on all of my characters and some even have 2 or 3 sets of armor or weapons but I don’t think exotics are too hard to come by. CoF is a good way to get zerker gear for example. I also don’t have a “main character” I honestly do play different characters in different parts of the game. Ascended weapons will presumably require a bunch of T6 mats, some new mats, and then the lovely aspect of crappy development, time gated mats. Oh Joy.
Another post on how someone wants the best of the best right now without putting forth effort? How surprising…
I couldn’t care less about PVE. You want to farm the crap out of the game to achieve the best items in the world? I’m totally fine with it.
But WvW is totally different. I don’t want to see hardcore gamers dealing more damage than I do, just because they farm PVE all day long.
Currently I would have to farm for at least an ascended sword, shield, greatsword, rifle and longbow with my warrior while my ele would just be fine with a staff. lol
And on that same side of the coin, people who play more than 1 character in WvW like I do.
If you haven’t gotten the message by the crappy design and the 20+ nerfs over the last 12 months then you are a little late to the party.
Anet hates alts, the end.
You’re right, and I know this, but it just seems silly if they haven’t thought about this killing “build diversity”(lol zerker).
But, you know what? Anet probably doesn’t care. They’re just looking at their bottom line and adding in gear is a stupid easy fix to a greater problem of keeping some people interested in this game instead of horizontal progression(good content).
(edited by Zindrix.1750)
That’s my point. The guy claimed old players are still progressing.
Where is the progression when I can take a character from 1 to 80 and kit them out with stat perfect gear in less than 2 weeks?
Fact is this game needs something that takes a bit longer to achieve than what we’ve got now.
I agree, but being lazy and adding in time-gated grindy weapons isn’t the way you go about keeping people interested in your game. Maybe they should actually think about adding in some significant end game content that people might want to play? Fractals doesn’t count.
Can you help me understand why you didn’t go 0/0/30/30/10?
Did you think 30 in virtues was better than AH even with all that healing gear helping AH? I don’t really get the point of the virtue line, aren’t the passives better than the actives anyway?
You’d need at least 20 in Virtues to get the trait that improves the regen on the F2 Virture. Guess it might be possible to go 0/0/30/20/20 to get AH, EM, and Absolute Resolution, but then you’d need a lot of Magi gear and keep your crit near 50%. You would also lose 10% boon duration too though. Interesting point however.
ITT people think they can reason with fanboys
True, but it’s worth a shot right?
I don’t know about alts but when it comes to builds there’s nothing to kill, build variety is none existent.
Well you’re right, especially in regards to pve, but I’m more focused on WvW.
I think you have some wrong number there.
Effectively Ascended gear is only 10% better than exotic gear and if you compare an exotic weapon for instance (power, toughness, vitality) + soldier crest with an (upcoming) ascended weapon ^PTV aswell that difference will like +3 power +3 toughness +3 vitality, i can’t see that ruining wvw experience for anyone, unless u think these +3 stats on every piece will make that much of a difference, anyways i get your point and completly understand your sideAnyways just in case you wanna check it out but you have probably already done it
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Item
Ascended trinkets are currently 10% better. Weapons will be different if the base damage is higher because weapon damage is multiplied by stats. So yeah, 9 stat points won’t be much, but increased damage and the sum of full ascended stats will be together.
I’m beginning to wonder if Anet has even considered the impact of all of this “vertical progression”(read: time sink). Ascended weapons will no doubt have higher stats than normal weapons, but they will also probably have higher base damage. I can’t even begin to mention how much I HATE, HATE, HATE, this release. Honestly, in my head I was hoping all of the ascended junk would be released towards the end of the year so I could quit then. Now I’m just considering the other games that are available now.
It was bad enough to ignore the ascended trinkets, but now the weapons will be too much. Not only will the base damage be higher, but it will also have higher stats of course and in combination with ascended trinkets, that’s quite a difference, especially in WvW. I won’t be able to gear my alts. I won’t be able to use a diverse selection of weapons. I won’t be able to alter my character’s builds. Maybe if the classes weren’t so linear I would be ok with 1 weapon and 1 character? Ugh.
