The uses of the Dead

You can be a pure DPS backliner for your home server zerg and defend your land! In roaming we are also fine but not very mobile, so you might miss your Gs warrior. In pvp you can play CC condi or just straight powermancer. PvE is meh for team support but not worse than warrior in terms of DPS.

Where they dont shine, is wherever you need mobility, stability and evades. You can still spec into eliminating these weaknesses but at a cost of DPS.

Greater marks trait - blast radius 300 ???

in Necromancer

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

It should show it regardless. Radius is the radius of mark itself. Blast radius is the aoe or dage radius. So for instance two enemies are approaching you. Say you throw mark on a warrior and he triggers it by walking into it. Even if the other guy wasnt inside the mark to trigger it, if he was close enough to sides of the maRk (60 distance) he would eat the skill too.

Your first dps spec with 50%crit -200%damage means you hit 50% of the time for an extra 100 damage, so over time (.5)(100) = 50% extra damage. With power of 2200 that makes your effective power 2200 × 1.5 = 3300

Your new spec is 30%crit-211%damage so thats .3(111) = 33% extra damage average. With 2300 power your effective power is 2300 × 1.3 = 2990

So you lost about 10% damage with your new spec… though it will hit higher numbers over time it wont do as much damage as it crits a lot less.

Im assuming you did not check the traits which give you an extra 50% crit in DS. Since main source of damage will be piercing life blast, life transfer and wells (can also tick while in DS) build has 100% crit with fury. So you can make your calculations with 80% base crit basically.

Superior Rune of the Pack + "Retreat"

in Guardian

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

Pack is optimal for most situation with its 50% uptime on fury thats shared with allies, not to mention stats. I feel like for a roamer guard either pack or traveler runes must be present. However i think wasting a trait and utility for movement is sacricing a huge deal. The reason we get kited os because some builds have more gap openers than our closers. The best thing you can do is try not to miss binding blade and use your other three gap closers cleverly.

Its a very complicated subject though i believe you covered most of it. I dont care enough about inflicting 5 less vulns over 1 minute of time or loosing 1% DPS. So i do whatever i feel like doing.

For those who are interested enough, here is DnT analysis on the camping vs swapping.

Confused about the advantages of power necro

in Necromancer

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

Not a HUGE difference so people play what they prefer. Some pros and cons:
Axe: Deathly claws is a hard hitting skill from 600 range when traited. Unholy feast is good only if you hit 3+ opponents. AA is pretty bad. Synergizes with WH isnt terrible but its better with a focus due to range and chill yhst helps you kite. I tend to only take it if i also have 6 second cooldown on death shroud since dps of axe isnt sustainable.
Dagger: Decent cleave witj AA. AA can be very useful in some pvp maps like khylo to ge erate life force by hitting crates walls and windows or even treb. Good to cleave downed bodies as well. Life siphon is pretty useless unless heavily traited to siphoning. You can still cast it while closing gaps or running away if other skills are on cooldown. Skill 3 immob is vital for setting up burst with your teammates. It can be used to combo like 5 skils one after another and gets better with fear chains here and there.

I take dagger for pvp and axe when im a backliner in WvW. Axe is only better in PvE if you need to kite a single target. But yeah preference :P

Damage for sPvP: Is Signet the best heal?

in Warrior

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

As said above, healing signet has best heal per second and synergizes well with adrenal health. It also provides more active gameplay as you dont worry about getting heal interrupted.
Mending could be as useful when fighting condi classes but you still need to invest 1 trait in it (redtorative strength). It would also synergize well with on heal proc runes.
Healing surge i find isnt viable in pvp because of massive cooldown. But i gues if you need adrenaline a lot for an axebow build and go yolo, then its a nice refill.

akaCryptic.2389

I didnt actually try condi in pve. As you said the bleeds have a cap. But bosses dont perform skills fastly enough for confusion to be worth it do they? Also most bosses dont even move making torment inferior to bleeds or burns. Also you need time to set up and apply condis where standard powers just dps right away. Again i havent tested their effectiveness but this is my view so far.

I very higly doubt this. My theory why bulls charge and earthshaker miss is about different ground levels or movement impending condis or swiftness. I think they screw the skills up mostly and even if they add a “ignores cripple chill swift” skill fact, there will still be the issue of elevation. Again this is just a theory so.

These days i stay away from Bulls Charge as i prefer to take a defensive utility instead. And hammer is just countered hard by some builds. Also the F1 doesnt cast sometimes eventhougj i use it in range and when it does its like 1 second laggy.

Necro dungeon issue

in Necromancer

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

As others have mentioned above, there isnt really anything that necros do better than oyher classes. AoE? Ele is better. Condi removal? Guardian. Single target DPS? Thief.

The necro can still be useful if one of the above are missing. The necro however should know each path of dungeon and what utilities to swap just like a good guard. For instance in AC after spider queen before traps there are knocking down gravelings. If you dont have guard for stability, a necro could drop well of darkness for a smooth battlr with tons of blinds. Or in skip runs the necro could go plague form, keeping aggro on and spamming blind while rest of you follow on his tail. But as i said earlier you would rather just have a thief to stealth you. Well of Power is similarly a substitute for purging flames.

The necro should indeed spec selfishly for own DPS. He can also rez squishy allies and kite if needed thanks to death shroud. The absolute best way to support your team as a necro in most encounters is, kill your enemy before they wipe your team

Idea is simple: immob with skill 2 then burst with F1 or on sword immob with either 2 or autoattack chain or even F1 to be followed by final thrust burst. Didnt really know what to take for offhand but i like shield in general. It should work in theory but will probably be weak. Please try it out and tell me as ill be away from the game for another week or two. Have fun! (immobs might help you with landing bursts when laggy)

Hambows have amazing sustain. But that doesnt mean you cant outplay them. Its a but more difficult in pvp cause you may need to sit on the point which happens to be almost as big as their hammer and LB burst radius. When they are on longbow watch out for pindown. This may initiate the CC chain. When they are on hammer you should kite if you can. They shouldnt catch you and if they try to leap with earthsaker, well you should see it coming as its the easiest skill in the game to dodge if they are attacking from afar. As a necro if you so get caught with CC dont waste a stunbreak immediately unless its a 2+ second stun. Stay in DS to soak up the damage.

By the way, whats that longbow skin called?

Warrior playerbase seems depressed without having any reason to do so

People have their reasons. They dont feel as strong in 1v1s anymore especially in top levels of play. Also the constant nerfs actually changed things a lot. I main warr/necro cause they are more straightforward in terms of playstyle. Also nice HP pool.

TLDR: with death perception 25-35 base crit is optimal. Foot in the grave is not worth if you have good guardians.

The DPS build seems ok as Im assuming it fits your playstyle and zerg. I never tried the faster well recharge build simply because i felt close to death was too strong of a trait to pass as it synergizes well with my own playstyle.

My setup is almost identical to your dps build but i take lich form and 50% in crit. This allows me to mix valkyrie with zerk to get some more HP. I like to keep my crit chance around 35% as i will get enough fury from my warriors. Giving up 50 crit for death perception doesnt make too much sense for me as ill have 2 guards in my party for sure. Also i run pack runes cause im broke but 50% fury uptime isnt that bad overall. I drop my wells and go into DS piercing lofe blasts and everything crits its just so nice DPS. You can do the same with ice bows to get crits. As for the stunbreaker i usually take spec armor but sometimes swap to walk or even wurm to place it in my keep. Though wurm can leave you off worse by porting away from your allies water fields.

Weapons
Staff: You will have a staff on one of your weapon sets 90% of the time regardless of your build. Staff is not a DPS weapon, its taken for its utility. Long range life force generatin AA, condi transfer and AoE fear are the main reasons.
Axe: AA is crap and 3rd skill is situational. 2nd skill is often used in PvE and WvW fpr single target dps along with life force regen.
Dagger: The reason you take this on you mainhand is the hard hitting cleaving and Lf generating auto attack. The 3rd skill immob can be used to set up burst in pvp. In PvE its useful against trash mobs if you dont have wells. Off hand is used in condi specs
Warhorn: good in pve and wvw for swiftness and aoe unblocable daze.
Focus: I never take one, honestly other offhands seem much more useful but this is useful for chilling builds.
Greatsword: We dont have this yet, but i think its gonna be kitten.
DS: Main DPS way for pve, just spam autoattack and 5th skill. Also very useful in condi builds for bleed fear and torment.

As others said there isnt much way of support to allies but here are a few situational methods i often use:
Plague signet: in pve when mobs only inflict 1 condi on you like burn or poison. You take them from teammates to take off some pressure off them.
Well of darkness: very strong defensive tool if you have no thief in party. I use it for gravelings after spider queen in AC given we have no stability.
Grim specter or Lich form 5: this removes like 9 condis from your teammates, useful if you guys are stacking and each have over 4 condis on you.
Well of power: same as above
Resurrection: Rez your squishy allies in death shroud. Often you will find yourself the only one standing!

Note that these mostly work in unorganized pugs and will make things much smoother. In harder dungeons like fractals, a guardian will support the team better in all ways except for DPS and rezzing.

Troll Necro Build

in Necromancer

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

There are 2 ways for you to troll in EoTM.
1st way: Spectral Powermancer with a thief friend. You take spectral walk grasp and wall along with lich form. You go all zerk with preferably on crit proc sigils. Idea is to burst once your thef friend stealths you. Life blasr + doom or lich form from stealth is pretty fun.
2nd way: I think something close to terrormancer should work. You definitely need corrupt boon, reapers protection, master of terror and rune of nightmare. And get wither spectral walk or wurm cause they will catch you often.

vs Mesmer: Warrior Perspective?

in Warrior

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

Pretty much everything has been summed up above. I hate fighting a mesmer on my warrior, its just not fun on top of being a counter. As for specifics:
My odds will be higher if in wielding a GS against a lockdown or shatter.
There is no way ill kill a torment mesmer unless i run condi hybrid with a lot of cleanse.
Staff teleport gets makes me mad.
Kiting with stealth and blinks makes it much harder for me to land burst on you.
Oh and birdie is very annoying when fighting on open field.

In PvP its not a huge problem as ill decap until my team gets in or ill just die on point. In wvw however i change so much on my build solely to kill mesmers.
1) I run GS/Axe shield and take leg specialist over great fortitude just so i can land eviscerate after axe 3 or gs 4.
2) I take mobile strikes in case lockdown (also helps against rangers and escaping zergs). The oppotunity cost of doing this is about 9% pure damage as im not taking destruction of the empowered.
3) I run the condi food which is again a dps loss.

How are Warriors now?

in Warrior

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

Warrior is good team support but not so good in 1v1 above medium skilled players. We have huge telegraphs and get penalized harsh for missing burst thx to nerf. This puts you in a tough spot especially if you are running cleansing ire. Roaming is pretty fun, i find mobility OP but other than that its about average. And PvE good support, ok damage, high health even with full zerk makes you a wanted player.

Warrior was kind of easier to play. Now they slowly changed it so that more skilled warriors get more out of their characters

Death shroud- are you happy with it?

in Necromancer

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

I wont go into much detail but here are my opinions about the main things discussed:

Heal/Utility Skill bar in DS: no. This is against the whole concept of becoming something else that has a seperate health bar and uses bare hands to cast spells.

Access to stability: Again, you practice the art of undead and corruption, clearly you arent stable. Roam with a guardian if you really rage. I know i rage pretty often when get focused on with my necro.

Buffs to DS: Certainly LIfe Blast velocity needs to be increased like 25%. Same with dark path, it renders them to useless sometimes. More importantly entering or exiting DS should NOT interrupt stomps and resurrections. Also Dhuumfire needs some serious buff, its just way too weak compared to what it was.

My last 2 suggestions should bring some more build diversity as players may tend away from opting for close to death and death perception 90% of the time.

Take out 2 points from blood magic and put them into death magic to get reapers protection. Switch soul marks for master of terror. Really good synergy with all fears and damage on fear. The rest is up to you really. I for example dont go 6 into curses but go 4 curses 2 spite to pick up signet mastery ad i use plague and spite signets next to corrupt boon. Also hemophilia can be better than weakening shroud but maybe its just me who has problems generating enough life force. ( also another reason i dont prefer dark path)

vs Mesmer: The Necro Perspective?

in Necromancer

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

Now out of my 5 chars none is a mesmer so i generally get kited out especially when im on warr and guard. However mesmers dont concern me mich if im on thief or necro. Naturally terrormancer condi necro is a tough fight for a shatter mesmer especially if he isnt running stunbreak mantra. Now i dont know much about mesmers but here are my main thoughts and observations when fighting one.

Usually the blink/invis mind games dont work as well on me as they do against melee classes. Ill use Deah Shroud 4 and 5 when you are invis as they will track through anyway. Dodging shatters isnt that hard if its not set up. I can also just aoe dps illusions or fear with staff. When facing lockdown, it gets much harder as i cant transfer immob right away and the daze just messes up everything. If im playing condi, ill have a tougher time if i have no life force to begin the fight with. But otherwise shatterers just melt down by all the bleeds and fear.

CC hurts the necro most, illusions are not hard to deal with and neither is your blinks. Also the moa is a death sentence for a minionmaster as it removes all our pets.
Now for specific utilities; necros dont have like bread and butter combos so most is just improvisation. But i can give out a few of our common tricks. A good terrormancer will knock you down with flesh golem right before casting signet of spite. Also when fighting a condi necro, they will try to close gap with DS 2 chill which you must dodge at all times! If you get hit by this, whats going to follow wont be in your favour even if you manage to escape right after the hit. As with powermancers, we often combo spectral grasp with dagger 3 (pull and immob). React fast to that if you couldnt dodge the first skill. Use LoS while we are DS autoattacking, its also slow and kind of easy to dodge. If the necro is traited towards it, it can crit you for 5k when you have below 50% health. Last tip, time you shatter for when we are channeling axe 2 or heal as we will be vulnerable.

Thats pretty much all i could help with without knowing mesmer skills. Hope it was useful. (;

Best Leveling Weapon

in Necromancer

Posted by: akaCryptic.2389

akaCryptic.2389

You have two weapon sets as a necromancer and you can switch between them every 9 seconds. I would suggest using Staff in one set (two handed) and dagger warhorn on the other. When leveling you often need cleave and Area of Effect as well as speed to move around. Dagger autoattack provides nice damage and hits multiple foes, warhorn gives you swiftness and AoE daze which is useful defensively, staff 1 has long range and has built in AoE fear on 5th skill. You can switch staff with axe & dagger if you really like axe. Axe is good single target damage so its preferred over staff when fighting bosses, however death shroud 1 (life blast) is usually used in these situations as it is somewhat sustainable unlike axe 2 with the cooldown.

Warrior doesnt suck that hard. Some nerfs were needed some were harsh but when it comes to teamplay, warriors just have so much to offer. Specifically wvw and dungeons. Condis wont stick in zergs thanks to warrior shouts and WH, your backliners wont miss thanks to warrior CCs. In roaming we have the 2nd best mobility with ele (after thief). We also have many weapons and viable builds unlike many other classes that are forced to use metas. To top it all off highest stats!
Only downsides are buggy movement skills, adrenaline drop and the fact that we are predictable.

Elementalist:
D/D Cele a good one will usually outsustain me on my power spec. Useful to carry a focus for boon removal, chill hurts them a lot as they will swap attunements slower. Play defensively while they are on fire. Put down well of darkness if you are out of dodges. Transfer the burn with staff 4. On earth try to dodge the knockdown (ele jumps in the air to stomp). A smart ele will use earth 2 tp block projectiles if you are spamming life blast. In air they are sort of predictable. Ride the loghtning doesnt doo much damage but you should dodge what comes after, updraft (launch). Dont hit them a lot when they are covered with lightning aura. In water you want to be most agressive and use condis once they leave water. Overall its a good idea to kite if you can as thry are melee. But on most cases they will close the gap.
Guardian:
I dont have much experience with guard other than meditation. Much like warriors they are very predictable with their rotations. A bad one will precast focus 5 , teleport to you while casting to burst you down with 10k damage. Now normally you see this coming and its easy to dodge but if for whatever reason you get hit, know that they spent a stunbreak, block and highest dps skill. If you get scepter immob, break it immediately with staff 4, beware of aegis. If they have sword, dont life blast when thry are casting 3rd skill. If they have focus 5 up wear it down with dagger AA axe 2 or DS 4. When they are on GS they are so predictable. Walk out of wirling wrath and dodge binding blade (also spinning skill). I know they have invulns and everything which gives them some advantage. If they set up their burst right, they wont have a problem killing you, but if you manage to kite, then its gonna end up being a long fight. If you are using warhorn save 4 for their heal as you can interrupt them to prematurely end a fight also works with warr axebows. Dont underestimate them as they will counter you fear and possibly outsustain you.
Thats it for now, ill write more when i have time. Good luck

How to counter:

Warrior:
Hambow can crush you if you are not cautious. But usually easy kill if played right. Stay in their face when they are on bow and start fight with staff. I intentionally get hit by pindown so i can transfer bleed and immob to him (be aware of their stances, this wont work if they have berserkers stance up). Try to sodge arcing alice, warrior holds bow up and fires a flaming arrow, this does a lot of damage. When they are on hammer, use your CC, dagger 3, well of darkness and life blasting from 600 range hurts them along with chill and cripple. Only waste stunbreak if you couldnt dodge earthsaker. They have amazing sustain and chances are will stun you 10s later so manage them properly.

Axebow can be as dangerous. Save your death shroud 3 fear for when you get shield bashed (charged stun) as it will be followed by an eviscerate to hityou over 8k. Even if you dodge shield bash, they will evis right after and hit you if tou are in range so kite them when they have axe. Movement condis can do wonders. Needles to say, dont burst with Life blast or lich when they have endure pain or reflecting shield stance. You will end up killing yourself.

Sword Sword Bow Hybrid: its just an easy fight the way it is. Use you condi transfers as they usually lack cleansing. I dont know much about sword telegraphs but i usually end up cleansing or transferring condis.
When stomping a warrior, do it so that you minion is between you and the warrior, this will cause him interrupting you undead buddy.

Thief:
Fighting any thief is like walking on thin ice, and you are both on it. They can melt down easily, or you will be constantly CCd. Now a Sword/Dagger thief will try to be very unpredictable, they will lone of sight you with sword 2 and evade everythimg you throw. I usually prefer defensively at first and immob them after they use their heal. Save staff 5 for when they pop up shadow refuge. If they do manage to stealth and you know they are around, use DS 5 and 4 as they work through stealth as well. Another useful tip is that DS 4 ignores Line of sight, i would hit enemies inside stonemist castle behind the gate. If you anticipate that the thief is downed and stealthed spam dagger AA around and watch you life force bar. Thieves steal AoE fear from you which looks like them holding somethinf up in the air. Its vital to dodge that although a good thief will make sure it hits by casting it in stealth or something

D/P now you cant do a lot to counter these guys. You have to manage you cooldowna carefully. Save DS 3 for when they drop black powder to leap inside from. This can hurt them a lot as they wont gain initiative/Health/might/condi cleanse from stealth. Save DS 4 for when you anticipate a backstab so you deal some damage to them in stealth. Casting marks on you while they are stealthed can be OK but be aware that a good theif will dodge past them so spend cheap ones like staff 2. Last tip: try not to heal while in line of sight as they have an instant daze with pistol 4 at almost all times.

My first main was a sylvari necro. Sadly over months I realised how much the class was missing in terms of active defense amongst other things. But I really like the concept so I play it every now and then :P I will give some tips on specific utilities that power builds utilise and how to counter some classes.

Consume conditions: Despite being the only viable heal, it has a massive telegraph. As we lack stability try to use this while out of line of sight as any decent player will attempt to interrupt you. You can also combo this with other CC like flesh golem knockdown, any fear or even well of darkness.

Flesh Wurm: Low cooldown 1200 range teleport with a stunbreak! Decent damage and survivabilty but its best to place it somewhere out of combat as you can be really kittened if it dies. I prefer this over spectral stunbreakers sometimes as it gives me time to recover. With spectral armor for example, chances are ill get stunned again rhe next second.

Plague signet: Not that popular amongst power builds but can be often used in pvp and some niche pve situations for the passive (like burning boss). Better to use this if traited for signets. Active will work as long as you have a target that is within the range. You dont have to be facing him but blind wont transfer so you will miss!

Spectral armor: As others have said its one of the core skills of most builds. Try not to waste it when your LF is full.

Spectral walk: One of the few trolling tools available to a necro. Use it in wvw or pvp and then jump off of a caste, bridge, hill if you cant carry on fighting for whatever reason. Then port back and they cant get to you. Also used to close gaps with rangers that chase you. As far as i know, you can cast it twice immediately before hitting the ground to avoid falling damage, especially useful in exploration and wvw. Even saved my behind a couple times in skyhammer as i ported back to surface before sleeping with the wurms. Did i mention it gives beast swiftness? I love this skill.

Spectral Grasp: nice force and interrupt. Can be comboed with dagger 3 or troll people in skyhammer. Gets out of ranged and obstructed quite easily so beware.

Spectral Wall: rarely used with power builds but its preference, can be useful in pvp whwn holding a point and combo fielding with a mate.

Wells: very useful in putting pressure on points. Darkness is especially usefull against any melee and can be used to safe stomp.

The skills above are indeed channelling. AFAIK downed skill #1 is also channelling so it can be useful when your ally is reviving you when you have dps pressure on you.

Meditation build and bunker build for PvP

Normally Im against meta builds. And when I use them I tweak a few traits and runes. For instance I find rune of the pack effective in everything. Anyway, I feel the guardian metas are actually well made.

Med DPS http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Guardian_-_Meditation_DPS
Healing Bunker http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Guardian_-_Altruistic_Healing_Bunker
Virtue Bunker http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Guardian_-_Virtue_Bunker

Med DPS is my favourite. Easy to play nice dmg and survivability. I will also advice youto search for "guardian legendary build" on youtube

Hey guys again
So after some testing with the build I posted I think I might test the other variant here mentioned. The 4/0/6/0/4. I also use this variant in PvP and overall I think it’s better than 0/4/6/0/4

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fJAQJARTjMdU2ZVImhwJagfgC9t3C5gxAYAUmG5OA-TlCFwANOCAAeAAXVCiUJkgLAAK1fccIAsq8p2+DZ0FEAABgduzgMAMLA-w

What do you guys think?

Nice! Pretty much the build I use. Differences are:

Sigil of Rage instead of Sigil of Fire – for superior 100b combo
Endure Pain over Berserkers Stance – I do swap them often depending on my enemy
Sure Footed over Dogged March – Lemongrass Poulty + Cleansing Ire + Berserkers Stance are way enough against those condis
Vigorous Focus over Warriors Spirit – I’ve been told 25% speed gets written over by 33% swiftness. If this is the case WS is not a viable trait but I’m not 100% sure…
For food I’d prefer other things but theyre all expensive xD so anything will do I guess

Im pretty much on the same page as you guys. Before investing gold into my WvW Set I experimented in PvP (I know its not the same thing but whatever). In fact I tried 3 roaming and 1 pvp build and decided to play LB/GS as it was more efficient overall.

About the sigil, now i like carrying bloodlust in WvW in one of the weapons so that is a must for me. The second sigil is sigil of rage (50% on crit to gain quickness for 3s) on GS which actually helps a HUGE deal when you immob with bow then switch to GS for 100b. They have so little reaction time to heal or stunbreak. Also works well with bulls charge as 2s knockdown will be enough as well to complete 100b. The third sigil is battle as it comes handy with fast hands and i guess the last is up to you. Im inbetween doom (posion= less heal) air and accuracy.

For the rune I go with pack because of the nice stats and swiftness. Combined with sigil of rage you will pretty much get perma swiftness without having to spend up a trait slot for 25% speed (swiftness cancels warriors spirit afaik)

And I find 4 in power line to be better than 4 in critical because of great fortitude and endurance on burst. But i think this is debatable depending on your playstyle.

I must say its not easy to master this build but being able to deal decent ranged damage combined with GS mobility + burst is very nice!
