Anet's plan for Ranger and Necro

I think all these people complaining that necro and ranger are terrible don’t actually play the game. They certainly aren’t playing the same game I am. Both those classes are fine. That’s not to say they could use some improvements, but they are no where near worthless, or even bad at all. I think these people feel that if either of these classes aren’t brokenly overpoowered (and they aren’t) then they are worthless.

^this

and i’d add on to it that people are focusing to much on the weak parts of the class. every class has a few issues.

for ranger and necro its the pet and minions as the AI has never been ideal and never been durable for high level content

but both classes have enough that works for them to make them good.

ranger’s ranged attacks, and being a good jack of all trades. good at nothing, bad at nothing. it performs its role well (though i wish i could hold the bow like this when i shoot https://alttabninja.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/2-1.jpg but meh…personal problems xD)
in range and melee its a solid performer, but it will never shine at anything. at the same time it will never fail at anything.

necro’s marks, wells, fears, and vampirisms makes it the most durable class that isn’t a heavy armor. sure its not the best for melee but with its marks and wells there is no class in the game with superior AoEs (not even Elementalist, as necro lays ALOT more AoEs down and at a MUCH faster rate)

i never understood why the necro was given close combat weapons in the first place, they are magic users that survive better in the background of groups; especially when you look at how much more damage the second hand focus skills do compared to the dagger skills.

i think its for the theme of the “grim reaper and its scythe” plus the fact daggers are seen as dark weapons that steal life.

lore wise its fine at least, but i will agree gameplay wise it does make people play in ways not beneficial to their class.

doesn’t stop me though, the dmg of dagger’s 1 skill is so high (rivaling thief)
and because i’m used to theifs, dagger is a nice way to translate from thief to necro (instead of being forced to immediatly use a staff that i’m not used to. instead i can slowly transition from dagger/thief to dagger/necro and then staff/necro)

Engineer. HAMMER. Must has.

Just sayin’.

I want a thief with a TORCH.

i want necromancer to have a torch.
now THAT would be a good combo. death + fire.
i can see green fire attacks that burn the soul rather than the body =D

I think A net wants to use weapons that are least used by certain classes like torch, focus and warhorn. Warhammer on a Engineer is one example. A cloth profession getting a shield. A leather profession (Ranger) getting a staff. Shortbow is only used by two professions. So if you think about it they could really expand certain weapons to the spotlight,

but the same could be said for rifle (used by 2 classes, and not particularly effective on either. Engi has all its kits, and warrior’s rifle hasn’t been that popular or effective since bleed was removed from its 1 skill)

while staff for guardian, ele, and necro is pretty popular

Are there any physically unique characters?

in Lore

Posted by: arenta.2953

arenta.2953

In Game of Thrones, there’s a very large character named the Mountain. He is painted as a villain and people are intimidated by his size. He’s very physically powerful and near unstoppable.

In World of Warcraft, there’s a very large character named Garrosh Hellscream. He is also a villain and towers over everyone (though they never acknowledge his size, really). He’s also very physically powerful.

In both of these universes, these characters are exceptionally large. No other characters in their universes (save mythical races that are meant to be large) are the same size as them. They are fearsome, influential, and renowned.

I recently had a thought that such a character might be interesting in GW2, but for all I know something similar exists.

Does GW2 have any characters that are physically unique from the rest of their race? Characters that stand out from the pack by their appearance?

if you see caithe’s face appear in the sylvari character creator. tell me <.<

i expect it will be released at the same time GW2 was originally released

at the end of this summer
August 28, 2012 was the original GW2 launch date
so August 28, 2015 i expect will be HoT’s launch date.

and if not, who cares? it means Anet will have more time to deliver us a completed product.
Would you rather Anet cut corners and make the ending as dissapointing as the Zhaitan fight? completely removing the ground fight with Zhaitan?

or would you rather wait another month or so so that the ending is satisfying and something you want to replay.

if i have to wait. so be it. the more finished the product, the happier i am

Although shorter swords and daggers were used, the katana was probably the ninja’s weapon of choice, and was sometimes carried on the back.71 The katana had several uses beyond normal combat. In dark places, the scabbard could be extended out of the sword, and used as a long probing device.85 The sword could also be laid against the wall, where the ninja could use the sword guard (tsuba) to gain a higher foothold.86 The katana could even be used as a device to stun enemies before attacking them, by putting a combination of red pepper, dirt or dust, and iron filings into the area near the top of the scabbard, so that as the sword was drawn the concoction would fly into the enemy’s eyes, stunning him until a lethal blow could be made. While straight swords were used before the invention of the katana,87 the straight ninjat? has no historical precedent and is likely a modern invention.

A pair of kusarigama, on display in Iwakuni Castle
An array of darts, spikes, knives, and sharp, star-shaped discs were known collectively as shuriken. While not exclusive to the ninja,88 they were an important part of the kitten nal, where they could be thrown in any direction.89 Bows were used for sharpshooting, and some ninjas’ bows were intentionally made smaller than the traditional yumi (longbow).90 The chain and sickle (kusarigama) was also used by the ninja.91 This weapon consisted of a weight on one end of a chain, and a sickle (kama) on the other. The weight was swung to injure or disable an opponent, and the sickle used to kill at close range. Simple gardening tools such as kunai and sickles were used as weaponry so that, if discovered, a ninja could claim they are his tools and not weapons, despite their ability to be used in battle.

Explosives introduced from China were known in Japan by the time of the Mongol Invasions in the 13th century.92 Later, explosives such as hand-held bombs and grenades were adopted by the ninja.83 Soft-cased bombs were designed to release smoke or poison gas, along with fragmentation explosives packed with iron or pottery shrapnel.67

Along with common weapons, a large assortment of miscellaneous arms were associated with the ninja. Some examples include poison,72 makibishi (caltrops),93 cane swords (shikomizue),94 land mines,95 fukiya (blowguns), poisoned darts, acid-spurting tubes, and firearms.83 The happ?, a small eggshell filled with blinding powder (metsubushi), was also used to facilitate escape.96

This is part of the Ninja Wikipedia.

Arson was the primary form of sabotage practiced by the ninja, who targeted castles and camps.

So I guess since we are now calling Thieves Ninjas its safe to assume dual torches !

No seriously, ninjas were rarely used for assassination and often used blunt objects to avoid killing.

The interwebs, is there anything it can’t teach you ?

A ninja (???) or shinobi (???) was a covert agent or mercenary in feudal Japan. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, and open combat in certain situations.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja

The best-known cases of assassination attempts involve famous historical figures. Deaths of famous persons have sometimes been attributed to assassination by ninja, but the secretive natures of these scenarios have been difficult to prove.15 Assassins were often identified as ninja later on, but there is no evidence to prove whether some were specially trained for the task or simply a hired thug.

Portrait of Oda Nobunaga, by Jesuit painter Giovanni Niccolo, 1583–1590
The warlord Oda Nobunaga’s notorious reputation led to several attempts on his life. In 1571, a K?ga ninja and sharpshooter by the name of Sugitani Zenjub? was hired to assassinate Nobunaga. Using two arquebuses, he fired two consecutive shots at Nobunaga, but was unable to inflict mortal injury through Nobunaga’s armor.51 Sugitani managed to escape, but was caught four years later and put to death by torture.51 In 1573, Manabe Rokur?, a vassal of daimyo Hatano Hideharu, attempted to infiltrate Azuchi Castle and assassinate the sleeping Nobunaga. However, this also ended in failure, and Manabe was forced to commit suicide, after which his body was openly displayed in public.51 According to a document, the Iranki, when Nobunaga was inspecting Iga province — which his army had devastated — a group of three ninja shot at him with large-caliber firearms. The shots flew wide of Nobunaga, however, and instead killed seven of his surrounding companions.52

The ninja Hachisuka Tenz? was sent by Nobunaga to assassinate the powerful daimyo Takeda Shingen, but ultimately failed in his attempts. Hiding in the shadow of a tree, he avoided being seen under the moonlight, and later concealed himself in kitten he had prepared beforehand, thus escaping capture.53

An assassination attempt on Toyotomi Hideyoshi was also thwarted. A ninja named Kirigakure Saiz? (possibly Kirigakure Shikaemon) thrust a spear through the floorboards to kill Hideyoshi, but was unsuccessful. He was “smoked out” of his hiding place by another ninja working for Hideyoshi, who apparently used a sort of primitive “flamethrower”.54 Unfortunately, the veracity of this account has been clouded by later fictional publications depicting Saiz? as one of the legendary Sanada Ten Braves.

Uesugi Kenshin, the famous daimyo of Echigo province was rumored to have been killed by a ninja. The legend credits his death to an assassin who is said to have hidden in Kenshin’s lavatory, and fatally injured Kenshin by thrusting a blade or spear into his kitten.55 While historical records showed that Kenshin suffered abdominal problems, modern historians have usually attributed his death to stomach cancer, esophageal cancer or cerebrovascular disease.56

go by that logic if u want, but then why put staff in at all.
what does theif gain from it?
a mobile melee? nope. dagger
a stationary melee with knockdowns? rip for thief

i’d sooner believe its a dart gun than a staff(at least dart gun is a stealth weapon)

can u give evidence of any ninja using a staff during actual combat (aka not training)

First off a staff is in there cause we are all here speculating that the artwork represents the thief elite spec character panel and every single character panel for elite specs has included the elite spec’s weapon.

Second, what you feel the thief gains from a weapon choice doesn’t matter. You are not the developer anet can give thieves scepters and shoot unicorns from the scepters if they wanted to so saying that scepters does not give thieves anything is a mute point. Just like saying staff gives thieves nothing is a mute point because if anet wants to give thieves staffs they are gonna give thieves staffs no matter how you feel about what thieve’s need.

Third, why do I have to give a historic basis for ninja’s using staffs. Cause first of all ninja’s as seen in movies and other media are so far removed from actual historic ninja that there is no point in comparing the two or giving a historic basis when developing a ninja for a video game. Historic ninja’s for one were mostly peasant farmer’s more likely to use a hoe or other farming tool in the manner of a staff like weapon then a rifle seeing how gunpowder would be hard to come by. Also ninja’s using staffs isn’t crazy look at Donatello from the teenage mutant ninja turtles for example. Also i don’t think you have ever even touched a real bo staff cause if you have actually felt the weight of one you wouldn’t be calling it a bludgeoning weapon like it cant quickly disable or kill someone. A strike from a bo staff on someone without armor is gonna do its job in one hit. Also one of the most iconic ninja weapons is nunchucks those are bludgeoning weapons as well but I guess you cant kill people with those either.

i was talking about ninja in the period of Oda Nobunaga.

cause players have freedom of choice for what game they play and spend money on.
devs can’t choose what game they develop.

Did you really just ask one member of the forums for evidence of real ninjas in combat, to prove how a thief bo is ‘viable’ but then reply to them with cartoons?

posted a cartoon because its based on a real historical event.
if u want i can bring a historical video. but since they didnt have video camera(or heck, cameras) back then its gonna be a made up product depicting a real thing.

never said they didn’t use staffs, or nunchucks
but generally, ninjas perform the role of assassins. look at the era of soloman, and ptolemy.
knifes, daggers, throwing knifes, and darts- silent bladed weapons that don’t make a sound when you use them (even rope, though that was more a last resort)

or, rifles.

Class colors are used in the background are reminiscent of theifs current trait lines backgrounds

and yet a blugeoning weapon matches a stealth class?

do we know what color this druid will be? green cause ranger?

answer these
1. why would a stealth class use a blugeoning weapon instead of a single hit weapon.
2. why would they give ranger and theif the same weapon when so many classes have staff? and only 2 have rifle
3. why would they give thief a staff when dagger is already the pinnacle of dmg dealing. what would be the appeal of staff over dagger for a STEALTH class.

4. look at existign thief weapons, all share something, weapons that in real life would be used to quickly kill their target.
one of these things is not like the other. what is it? staff.
but rifle fits in

pistols are ranged yes, but they MOBILE range. constant dmg
rifle is new, stationary ranged alpha dmg

staff? stationary melee? for a thief? thats death
mobile melee? we have sword and dagger already. so a waste

To be fair the character on picture is hardly a druid.

you need to go look up some non D&D druids. look up a druid when their home is destroyed(like for example, when an airship fires on a forest)
they get dark as they pull your body apart and shower your blood over the plants you killed.
oh and heres a pretty picture

You’re really grasping at straws here man. Why don’t you answering me this. Why would any character designer choose to use an armor set called sneakthief to represent a druid class? The whole point of design it to represent something to be readable by your audience usually using available tropes and stereotypes. Now if you can honestly say that you would make the design choice to use a ninja looking outfit to represent a manipulator of nature then good thing we don’t have you on the design team. Also to your point about a stealth class using a bludgeoning weapon I see no problem with it. Staff is a traditional martial arts weapon ninja’s are martial artists. There is more sense in that then putting a druid in tights and a shredder mask.

go by that logic if u want, but then why put staff in at all.
what does theif gain from it?

Maybe… all of these years of neglect and nerfs are all part of something bigger? What if Anet plans to continuously worse as time goes until both professions are undesirable to the point no one plays them anymore so they have a reason to delete them and not worry about managing them in the future! :O

You don’t play WvW or sPvP do you. They are every where in those game modes. I should know. I play one.

necromancers are incredibly easy to lock down in both game modes. I should know. I play one.

if you solo yes

necros are ment to be with the zerg, providing a ton of AoEs, life steals, and crowd controls

specially on edge of the mists where those AoEs lock down paths very fast. with 3 necros you can stop an entire zerg (or at least send alot of them feared off the side falling to their doom)

the life steal has been epic as well(blood trait line) as i’m only lv 35 on my necro, and i’m playing in lv 45+ areas (not wise….but its pretty fun and challenging)

the only part of necros that fails atm(other than the nerf to the well….which i’m a bit sad about)
is the low durability of minions.

idk about spvp. but in WvW, a Necro’s vamperic aura, wells and marks, greatly benefits any zerg. (plus that fear wall. )
so much so you become public enemy number 1 of the enemy zerg

I run daggers on my necro, which will translate to greatsword in the alternate universe that HOT decides to appear in, so i run a frontline power build. any class with a lot of interrupts (warrior, thief, mesmer) that exploits them properly can easily lock down a necromancer even if i’m fighting 1v1.

staff + dagger/focus for me =)
dagger for dmg/heals/speed (that vamperic aura+other life steals)

staff for when i’d rather not lead the zerg and just want to blow people off bridges

unfortunately….minions need more hp if i’m ever going to use them (they die so fast…just not worth it). and the elite skills are a bit….lack luster due to their inability to last long in a zerg(using lich for in a zerg makes it easier for people to focus you…which gets me lectured by zerg leader about keeping a low profile to maintain my vamperic aura for as long as possible…..glad to see he cares =D

necro is easy to lock down, but if it isn’t locked down then its dmg turns the tide easily(and the conditions/cc/vamperic stuff)

Yes it does. Ninja’s used bo staffs (among other weapons). And they practically invented stealth.

the bo staff was a weapon of training, not really used much by successful ninjas in the field.

It was used as a weapon as well.

(or in the case of the katana, something that 80% of japan carried around. it was still a weapon that could kill in a single hit though, unlike bo staff)

There are martial artists who can disable or even kill you with their bare hands in many different ways. I’m sure a ninja can do quite some damage with a long stick. A true martial artist can turn everything into a deadly weapon, wether it’s a razor sharp sword or a paper clip.

true
but most of those aren’t ideal for assassinations or sabotage. as they take time and position. not ideal when there are alot of guards around
or in the case of japan, an army.

when you use a blugeoning weapon, you are giving up stealth
when you use barehands, you are relying on being alone with the target.
-both vastly impact your survivability as you need to be there and gone

both reasons that blades and eventually rifles would become more popular very fast.

a bo staff is for fights when your opponent can strike back at you, in which case the bo staff counters the blows. but you lose stealth as your target is aware of you.

the bo staff was a weapon of training, not really used much by successful ninjas in the field.
mostly throwing knifes(and other throwing weapons), katanas, and daggers(multiple names for them).
rifles became popular for their ability to eliminate the target from a distance, saving much risk in that distance needed to cover (as its easier to stealth to a view of the target rather than up close, and it was easier to run….which ironically is the reason Oda lived, both shots hit his armor and failed to kill)

as i said, blugeoning weapons like the bo staff don’t mix well with stealth. smaller, easier to conceal weapons work better. (or in the case of the katana, something that 80% of japan carried around. it was still a weapon that could kill in a single hit though, unlike bo staff)

the rifle was the exception as it had range.

Sylvari will become mordrem if corrupted, so they will be monsters, not professions exactly. And Faolain when creating a nightmare court created her version of the dream which can work as well as the dream, yet I wouldnt be surprised if she gets corrupted, even willingly.

About the picture, check this article and plz don’t spread misinformation

In 1319 AE, Faolain followed Caithe to a burning village that had been overrun by Destroyers. There, she performed a dark ritual involving blood magic to poison Caithe.

-blood magic? mesmer? but thats necro

You are wrong but I love you.

how am i wrong?

blood magic for a mesmer?

and you saying they didnt reuse assets from guild wars utopia in eye of the north and gw2?

also look at the creatures in that picture
do they look like nightmare hounds?

Faolain (picture) is a mesmer not a druid.

rytlock is a warrior, not a revanant

point?
things change.

look at caithe, somethings changing there~
and Faolain can’t change?
the comign of a elder dragon of the forest(druid’s home) couldnt make faolain change? not even for caithe or for the nightmare court’s goal?

Jungle, not forest

And changes are made from class to spec (of the same class) with exception of rytlock but his change is backed up lorewise.

So with this analogy it’s Eir or Autie Rox that will become druid (because they are rangers).

And picture you posted is irrelevnt because it’s concept rt from longbefore HoT even being in plans. Sorry but your argument is weak, like you;re trying to see things that really aren’t hinted to us.

not rangers
sylvari.
aka those who are most affected by this dragon

specially those not allied with the pale tree that stands AGAINST the dragon.

the nightmare court stands opposite the pale tree, they are most vulnerable to the corruption of the dragon.
i expect to see faolain do a pretty big change when the dragon’s corruption offers her power(like jormag did to norn)

and this is the first time anet has posted a picture of something that wont come for ages?
pretty sure they do previews of stuff way into the future often(most never come true)

and besides, that picture has never really matched faolain.

a druid stands to gain much power from the coming of this elder dragon. power faolain would crave. being a mesmer hasn’t helped.

4. look at existign thief weapons, all share something, weapons that in real life would be used to quickly kill their target.
one of these things is not like the other. what is it? staff.
but rifle fits in

pistols are ranged yes, but they MOBILE range. constant dmg
rifle is new, stationary ranged alpha dmg

staff? stationary melee? for a thief? thats death
mobile melee? we have sword and dagger already. so a waste

To be fair the character on picture is hardly a druid.

you need to go look up some non D&D druids. look up a druid when their home is destroyed(like for example, when an airship fires on a forest)
they get dark as they pull your body apart and shower your blood over the plants you killed.
oh and heres a pretty picture

can people stop arguing and THINK

look at picture

is that a thief?
is theif the ONLY ONE who gets that armor?

no.
what medium armor user do we know who is getting a staff.

ranger. duh

if they gave thief staff, that would mean 7 classes have staff. but only 2 have rifle.

so its easier to assume that picture is for the RANGER. not thief.

turning a thief into an assassin = believable. they similar enough as is
turning a thief into a ninja? look at japanese history, ninjas used rifles during the time of Oda Nobunaga. hell one SHOT oda twice.

the Ninjas of this time didn’t use staffs, as bludgeoning weapons are ineffective for stealth.

thief to monk? its to much of a stretch, so no. i doubt thief is gettign staff. as a blugeoning weapon for a stealth class makes absolutely no sense(repeatedly hitting target till they die as they scream….real stealthy….bah)

also, druids defend their forests, aka they can get pretty dark with their hatred of beings who destroy the forest.
and whats going on in gw2 forests? a dragon. corruption.
so why can’t that picture be a druid striking from the dark of the forest?

why do people assume its a thief?

and i never thought twice about this…until i saw this picture

and now i’m wondering, why don’t we have an asura outfit that seems fitting for hot weather?

i’m not saying a bathing suit. what i’m saying is just an outfit with short sleeves and pants.

anyone know why? is there some lore reason behind it o.0

ok, the reason i post this is. theres literally no way to kill these people 1 on 1.

i’ve used stealth trap. they warped out of range

i’ve tried to maximize dmg to them the 3 secounds they visible. they dissapeared in 1 secound(i thought we FIXED the render issue)

seriously….this is getting annoying.

i cant even immobilize them because they lose conditions when stealthed, so just walk out of my vines.

can we plz remove the horribly long time it takes to put down a stealth trap?
that alone would go a long way to fix this problem…..without kitten ing thief in pve or sPvP

so i was playing engineer. they have a pistol skill that gave me an idea

make unload dodge as you shoot.

for example, if you are backing up when you hit unload, you evade backwards
if you are strafign left or right when you hit unload, you evade in that direction
and evade forward if you running forward.

but, if you arent moving when u hit unload, then no evade animation (cause lets face it. some of us like standing still as we fire to feel epic.

Something i noticed recently in WvW is despite alot of npcs, there really isn’t much….life there.
outside of WvW you hear talk about the mist war and all that but once your in it. you never hear them talk about how they feel being in it.

it would be nice to hear like how those sentrys feel being all on thier own

or the sentrys on the wall wanting a drink. or just on occasion having a conversation with eachother.

i know WvW isn’t about story or such, but its the small stuff like this that give the game mode a bit of life so instead of being just for the player, it also shows what the npcs think.

Honestly sinse each dragon has two spheres of influence (zhaitans being death and shadow I believe?) I wouldnt be suprise if we have to kill them in both spheres of influence. maybe we killed his control over death and one day in the future he recovers and we all get stabbed by shadow spikes from our own shadows…Imagine that at hte moment of mordremoths death. Everyone is celebrating and BAMB. All the destiny’s edge members get a shadow spike throw the chest.

….oh god….defeating zhaitan made him hide in our shadows and now he’s stalking us. sometimes influencing our decisions to drive a wedge into destiny’s edge and eventually put us at eachothers throats….

…..caithe stealing the egg now makes sense!!!
