Your character is more customizable in GW2 than any other MMO to date.

Champions Online says you’re just flat out wrong. Please don’t be making the mistake of thinking EQ, WoW, and SWTOR = all other MMOs.

I played champions, extensively in fact, it was a great game but I still stand by what I said. Yes it had more visual character customization, however I was talking about builds and mechanics, which it didn’t do as well nor in which did it allow as many customization options as GW2. Now quit trying to nitpick the discussion into going off-topic.

Talking builds and mechanics, CO still outdoes GW2. Superstats, powers, power enhancers, talents… all with minimal restrictions allowing you to combine essentially anything you want to combine. Sorry, you can say I’m nitpicking, but you counter someone’s post by saying GW2 allows you more customization than any other MMO ever, and I’m saying you’re wrong.

The whole discussion about trinity on this forum is like a bunch of kids saying that everything is easy and they can do everything as good as someone who practiced doing something for years because “hey, it’s just about doing this that and not doing this and that, easy I can do it too np”. Ignorance.

Ignorance.

That’s always been the Guild Wars community. Way back since GW1. They bite hard on the no-subscription fee bit and the ignorant righteous indignation of all else takes root. Ever wonder why WoW and SWTOR are the only MMO’s mentioned by 95% of the ones who “hate traditional MMO’s”? They don’t know of any others lol. Get used to it, man. :x

In my personal opinion, while the answer itself disappoints me, I’m actually pleased that he came out and said “We’re not working on home instances at this time.” Just flat out said it.

Do I wish they were? Absolutely. But I know GW2 needs a lot of work to improve, and some things can’t just be relegated to “we’ll get to it when we get to it” status. This, unfortunately, is one of the things that can. So I’m cool with him just coming out and saying they’re not working on it atm. I believe that’s good because the more people who read this, the more realistic expectations will be in any near patches. People will know not to expect Home Instance upgrades so there will be fewer gripes when the patch comes.

ArenaNet, you’re always going to get flak. You’re never. Ever. EVER going to satisfy your whole community at the same time. Withholding information and being vague and mute doesn’t settle us down; it frustrates us. Yeah, you’re going to get complaints from people when you say “We’re not working on [subject] at the moment. We want to, but we feel other things take priority”, but they’re going to amount to far less than your current/usual behavior of say-nothing-and-then-avoid-the-forums-when-the-patch-hits. Man up.

All that said, however. Start using the fking forums more. Don’t release all your info to Reddit. Or news sites. Stop being run by your fking marketing division. Give us information. Some of us can survive off that alone…

Best MMo of all time = SWG, closely followed by EQ1.
.

I never played EQ1, but of SWG I cannot agree more. That game was beyond amazing and had so many awesome things before the NGE. I still reminisce about SWG and all the great things about it.

On topic, GW2 has potential. I feel like its “doing new things” just for the sake of it. I’d wait a while longer to see what ANet does with it before declaring it the “BEST MMO”. I could definitely see GW2 becoming the best MMO, imo. But only time will tell.

And no, people, just because I didn’t proclaim GW2 is Jesus, doesn’t mean I hate it.

Brilliant and accurate read, Gehanna.

Champions Online has a system where your character can pretty much do whatever you want to do. You’re not even limited to staying within a single “powerset” (think of them as classes, if you’d like). You get to cherry pick which powers you want (as long as you meet pre-reqs), you get to pick which stats are the most important for you (and thus scale with your level), and you get to pick tiny extras to any stats for a little boost, as well as pick enhancements for your powers. You’re always given plenty of options but there are hard limits so you can’t simply just take everything.

Things work together and are dependent on various other things about your character, and it then features roles in combat (tank,support,dps-range,dps-melee) but the roles also have downsides. You can work around a lot of things if you’re clever/creative, but my point being is that your character has the potential to do literally anything you want. But you have to make choices to get it. You have to decide “well, I’ll take less of X so I can get more of Y, since Y is something I really want to focus on.”

I often feel like GW2 wants to be sort of similar to champions. Grouping is really only necessary for 5-man dungeons or world bosses, usually, and for regular overworld questing you can handle almost anything if you know what you’re doing.

But there’s never really much choice. Yes, I should retract that. There’s a few choices you can make. Your Utility skills and traits and weapons and in the end… your character doesn’t change that much in how it approaches the world. Your goal in GW2 is simply to spam your skills to meet the 5% so you get credit and can get “loot”, and then… spam your skills because that’s all there is to do in GW2.

The choices we do get to make feel shallow and unrewarding. There’s not much downside for picking one thing over another, so there’s not much upside to it either. Just pick a character and use your buttons.

This is what bosses were like in GW1. I don’t know why anyone is surprised, tbh. Bosses had more health and did more damage. But preparing for them was the same as for regular mobs. Just nuke the hell out of them and move on.

ANet are not responsible for their game. If their game systems allow you to make things a bit easier on yourself that’s probably a reason for concern. Nevermind that they scripted and coded the game to make it possible for you to do that, you should be righteous and resist the temptation to minimize risk/maximize reward.

Serious reply. Just look at the people who defend ANet over anything. ANet never makes mistakes/bad decision. Ever

Where did ANet say this was an exploit?

There was a thread made 2 weeks ago that specifically mentioned this and asked if it was an exploit. No official response whatsoever. Also the ig screenshot of a Dev being coy and not stating its an exploit.

As much as players are bound by ToS or whatever nonsense argument people like Erasculio et all make, ANet has an obligation to step up and say “Ok, we’re aware of this. Its definitely an exploit.” Not continue pretending to be clueless then ban waves of people feigning “oh my god, we just discovered people were affecting the market, we had to react!”. Sorry, but thats BS.

Also, people who “flip” the market are just as bad, yet that seems to be encouraged by ANet. So I don’t buy the whole “save the economy save the world” argument either.

The arguments I’m seeing in support of ANet are:

Person: “I just found out I have lung cancer”
ANet Illogic Defense Mechanism: “That’s what you get for smoking, you deserve it.”
Person: “I’ve.. never smoked, dude.”
ANet Illogic Defense Mechanism: “Yes you do, you have lung cancer. That’s proof. You’re paying the consequences. You knew the risks.”
Person: “Are you crazy? I’m serious, I’ve never smoked”
ANet Illogic Defense Mechanism: “Trying to play innocent won’t get you anywhere. You got what you deserved. You should have thought about it before you started smoking. Toodles~”

(Note: Only demonstrating the absolute idiotic “logic” from the ANet defense force, not equating smoking and cancer to salvaging items and being banned from a game. Though I doubt they’ll all recognize it.)

A reset time during your sleeping hours would be a reset during someone else’s playtime. At least with 00:00 UTC its based on a standard and not a preference of one region over another. Besides, you can finish your Daily right after the reset. If it resets at 6pm for you, then do the Daily from 6pm-8pm your time. Why is that impossible for you?

Reset time is perfect as it is, since its based on a global standard and not regional preference. This is a global game, after all.

Can we stop pretending like subscribing to a game means you’re forced to play? I’ve played a handful of subscription based MMOs (and in fact, during my stays at Champions Online I subscribe even though the game is mostly true f2p), and never felt like I was forced to play when I didn’t want to. Nor have I ever felt that if I unsub, I can never ever come back. GW2 is not the only game you can decide to stop playing and come back another time. I’m not aware of any MMO that deletes your account if you cancel a subscription to take a break for a few months, so please let’s stop pretending the GW2 is an exception in that regard. Sure, it doesn’t have a subscription, but a lot of MMOs don’t have subscriptions. In fact, a lot of MMOs don’t even have a $60 purchase requirement. So the “you don’t have to play” isn’t some unique feature GW2 offers. Let’s stop talking about it like it is.

Would you reccommend GW2 to a friend?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: arjeidi.2690

arjeidi.2690

I would not, and it has nothing to do with “vertical progression”.

We’ve had how many bugfixes in the last month? Oh, you mean just the fixes that came with the Lost Shores patch? Which hardly fixed anything (and in some cases did more harm than good [blind > phantasm summon, for example]).

Since release there have been countless bugs regarding skills and traits and game mechanics. Every profession seems flooded with more things that are not working than are. And its 3 months on now and we’re reduced to bugfixes once a month? Are you serious?

In addition to far too few bug fixes, they nerf classes based on how they are now, when half their kitten doesn’t work, instead of fixing them. Do I think fixing a bug should, or would, only take 10 minutes? No. But if you’re a competent enough programmer to make the game, it shouldn’t take you 3+ months to fix them either.

Then there’s the failure to split PvP/PvE from the beginning like they said the would. Any developer thinking both areas of gaming can be balanced on one set of skills that isn’t Rock/Paper/Scissors is deluding himself, and I thought ANet had learned this from GW1. Either they didn’t learn, or they did but simply don’t care.

I would not recommend GW2 to a friend right now, as it is. But as I play periodically I’ll see how it goes. If it improves, then yeah I would. But as of right now, no.

Agreed! Jumping Puzzles in GW2 are one of my three favorite things about the game. (The other two things being: the environments/scenery/details, and Quaggans <3 ).

I haven’t finished them all, I’d say I’m only about… 50% through them in total, but I tend to repeat several of them daily (Morgan’s Leap, Dark Reverie, Spekk’s Lab, Shattered Ice Ruins.) I’m currently working my way through Harathi Hinterlands planning to do that one next. Sadly I missed out on the Clocktower though, oh well. Hopefully it makes a return next year.

Grats on finishing them all, btw. Its cool knowing there are others as in love with them as I am.

Reading your post had me thinking “Well, they kept that in from GW1 then.” In GW1, bosses were really just “harder” mobs (“harder” being defined as ‘having more health and armor and damage while ultimately behaving exactly like a regular mob’) which a profession-specific glow that you could (eventually) cap skills from. They always seemed ‘meh’ in GW1 and I’m a bit… not surprised while reading your assessment that they have much of the same feel. There’s nothing really unique or interesting to them.

Only speaking for myself… but I’ve been playing MMOs for ~8 years now. Always participating on forums. And in the early years, I’d group up with anyone at anytime for anything. It was fun and interesting meeting new people. But my experiences have been mostly ‘meh’. Sure I’ve met some really nice and great people, but either I or they end up stop playing the game a couple months later and so there goes that. Or, as it is in real life, most people I bump into tend to be jerks or morons or completely juvenile, usually a combination of those to differing degrees. It just isn’t worth my time anymore to group with people and take a chance “maybe they’re not a kitten”.

I’m not saying everyone out there is a moron, or that even most people are. For me personally, I’ve had enough grouping experience in my near-decade of MMO playing. I’d rather play games with people I already know, or on my own. My time is rarely ever wasted that way. :x

I’ve seen fewer than 10 mentions/references to EQ2, Ragnarok Online, SWG, Champions Online, CoH/CoV, etc. throughout the 2 months of these forums, and I don’t think that number will suddenly rise, ever. Maybe 20 mentions by 2013. The reason its only WoW is because that’s all they know of. Yeah, its the cheap way out, but they’re likely not MMO’ers so its a lot easier to just mention the biggest one out there rather than learn about other games.

They all have good features. They all have bad ones too. GW2 also has good and bad features. But the GW community is incredibly self-righteous, and it always has been.

Guild Wars 2 is not free to play. You do not get to log in to the game without a copy being purchased. Purchased =/= free. Simply having no subscription doesn’t make it free. Guild Wars 2 is not free to play, it just doesn’t have a subscription. Which isn’t uncommon these days.

That said, I find the ‘gambles’ (chests, dye packs) to be so unrewarding I think my money is better off spent on other things. (Hooray Skylanders!).

This is a decision every player will have to make for himself/herself. Telling someone “too bad, ur dumb for not knowing lololz” is all well and fine… and then those people stop buying items. If you’re really a fan of ArenaNet, wouldn’t you like to see ANet make money?

EQ2 has a card game called Legends of Norrath, and I must admit that I had a great time playing it. I think it’d be awesome to see something like that in GW2 way down the line.

Why is GW2 combat sooooo BORING???

I much prefer the combat in Champions Online, to be honest. Guild Wars 2 combat aims to be similar, but the cooldowns on most abilities, combined with their situational use, means you either spam everything for “fun” and then die because your blind is on cooldown, or you conserve your skills and just yawn while you autoattack.

GW2 needs shorter cooldowns across the board.
