First of all: hats off for a great guide!
With all the new ascended gear, and the soon coming ascended armor / weapons, what ascended stats should you go for now?
(ascended earrings/amulets/rings/backpacks)
thx all
For small group www fights, which one is the better? Focus or shield?
Or does it depend on the main hand (Mace / Scepter)?
I like the group protection from shield (specially when traited) and the knockback. (Also it looks awesome!)
But focus can give blind on up to 4 foes every 25 sec and 3 blocks.
Are there any traits for focus?
cheers
Thanks for the great tips! I enjoyed every second of the video :-)
Looking forward to see more.
In our guild we do excactly the same tasks as your party did. It’s much more fun than zerg vs zerg.
Search and Rescue should be a F-number command!
Search and Rescue = F5

Great Voice!
[I take no credit, just wanted to share this with those not aware]
I made a warrior alt after my main ranger. I got the warrior to lvl 30, was boring as hell. Deleted him!
Then made a thief, atm lvl 30 . a lot of fun. but never feeled like contributing to group.
Then made a GUARDIAN! atm level 62. It’s awesome. I feel rly active in groups (dungeons/fractals/www). And a completely different playstyle than ranger.
But Ranger is still my top prof!
For the first time ever ally NPCs are competent and actually able to fight and support!
During the last boss in Molten Weapons Facility dungeon, I was rezzed by either Braham or Rox!
I think it’s awesome that they are actively engaged in the event!
I have been playing Ranger since release but I still can’t figure out the usefulness of “Guard”.
Where and when (also why?) do you guys use the “Guard” skill?
Is it a pvp, www or pve (dungeon / solo) preferred skill?
Skirmishing Traitline
-Move Trap Potency and Trapper’s Expertise to wilderness survival.Beastmastery Traitline
-Fix Master’s Bond to "You have a bond with your pet that increases its attributes each time you kill a foe. When either of them (you have 2 active pets) is defeated (dies) or deactivated (removed from their slot in pet menu), the bond is reset. (The Bond should be reset if and only if the above mentioned happens or the player dies) (Maybe two different stacks to the two active pets, I.e. Pet A has a stack of 22 but Pet B has a stack of 0 because it haven’t been called out of the Pokéball)
I strongly, deeply agree with you! Specially the trap traits and “master’s bond” should be re-made! We have wished these changes for a loong time. So far no dev response, but keep the hope high!
About the traps :

I have also seen engineer’s turrets get hit by the beam!!! Why attack dead objects anyway!?!?!?
Question: As a Ranger, if I swap pets before they get hit with the beam, does it “avoid” the hit, or does it simply kill my new pet?
if you swap pet at the moment skull is removed, (just like you would dodge yourself) the “new” pet will not be hit.
Also, “search and rescue” is good to have here, since dead pets still rez.
Ascended rings (and other gear) should be salvagable in order to gain Fractal items but also usable in Mystic Forge (gain another kind of ring).
I know that hacked accounts are used to run bots and exploits, but I simply don’t understand why some (regular) players risk their own account by doing exploits?
Anet can easily track your moves and hits really hard with no mercy (perma bann), which I strongly support. We all remember the snow-flake bann avalanche.
But why risk a perma bann for an account that you have invested hundreds of fun playing hours?
Ps. Don’t exploit! The Unmerciful Hammer of Bann hits hard!
If you set Animation on low, you will not be able to see some important stuff. Eg. some pve events are about pouring water on structures on fire. If Animation is on low, you can’t see the fire!
There will always be stupid people around you no matter what precautions you make! Fortunately, as suggested, you can always block people (right click name / “face” and block).
Also try to ignore them. You can also report. Anet will check the chat logs.
…..
Dear A-net… in your Ranger Profession page, besides you have false description of the class, you have traps icon in the spirits explanation section and spirits icon for traps section… THAT IS how much attention you pay to us rangers…
…….
LOL never noticed that!
Shame ……..
Staff:
I would prefer a 1H main hand long range cc OR 1 H main hand melee AoE.
And now that we are adding weapons: Give us a whip! (also mentioned by some other guy in another thread)
Whip:
It could be 1H main hand melee/mid range cc or 1H off hand melee/ mid range cc off hand.
(How awesome would it be to have Whip + Torch!!!!!)
Both staff / whip suit the ranger / pet team. Either way, give Ranger something that gives some cool group effects.
- buy mats for a mystic forge weapon. cool skins that you can keep for yourself or sell for profit.
- buy gems : buy boost for yourself and your guild (bonfires)
- or donate them to me :-) he he
A couple things:
- For PvE/PvP/WvW, we know that those are 3 different playstyles, we don’t just lump PvE and WvW together.
Considering WvW and PVE use the same skill values, yes you do.
We’re starting to split PvE/WvW in the upcoming patch.
But we want them to be things that keep consistency across the game types as much as possible.
JonathanSharp.7094, Game Designer
I’m not sure how this will effect www nor PvE, but it’s a big step in the right direction. Imo, www and PvE should be separated from the beginning.
How will this impact Rangers?
I think Rangers can finally outshine in www!

I don’t think Anet’s philosphy is the same as for the game you mention. Nor the main player base I guess. When ascended gear was introduced, a lot of players flamed about the new gear they had to grind for.
So, I guess you have to consider GW2 as another kind of MMO.
Is it better or worse?!!? Well, that’s a personal taste. Personally I like GW2 so far.
Also a new MMO is on the horizon (tip: Fus Ro XXX ). Keep an eye on that. They will soon announce beta testing.
I don’t think most Rangers who are complaining are complaining about sPvP. We’re stronger there because the extremes that other classes can bring everywhere else are not available there and our pets, a large part of our class, are more comparable to classes that now don’t have ascended gear, food, oil, etc..
Heck, my pet is supposed to be a large part of me but I have to trait 15 points Nature Magic to give boons I get to my pet … and even then it’s not the same duration as the boon I get but instead a very gimping duration dictated by the trait.
Runes of Melandru and Lemongrass are nice to have … though I wish they weren’t in the game (along with Rare Veggie Pizza and other similar things). Runes of Melandru does not save you from burst damage.
I agree with the Greatsword in WvW. It’s wonderful. I will not give it up! Traited, you have a 1,100 leap every 9.25 seconds.
…..
Yeah, I really think that food and oil buffs should also be spread to our pet(s), or give some WvW “Beast Master” perk that makes pets deal more damage and makes them practically immune to AoE so that pet builds can actually exist in WvW, because we kinda are the only prof that can’t just swap some traits and utilities to remove our pets… That or they make it baseline in WvW since that’s the only real area of issue.
…..
I agree. It is in www and group contribution Ranger lacks the edge compared to other professions.
Use the block!
It saves you the headache for a second meeting with the same people.
I know there is always the question in game forums about balance. Some people think a class or classes should get a nerf and some think a class or classes should get a boost. It is never an easy thing as any developer, designer, or anyone who knows the game industry can tell you. But there are certain times the call for nerfing or buffing is just a rant on some particular aspect they dislike. This works beyond classes and can be various parts of the game. A food change can affect a class, a class change can affect a style of play and so on and so on. ….. . To alleviate some ill conceptions about what balance is and is not I’ve found and interesting web clip that can answer some questions and enlighten those who wish to view it. http://www.penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/perfect-imbalance
Imo, Ranger has none of the required aspects mentioned in the clip.
Ranger has no edge over any other profession. In fact it is the other way around. All other professions have an edge over Ranger.
I just hope the Ranger traits and pet AI get better one day.
Give us an edge, and some decent build diversity!
NO to longbow!
Heavy armor = front line
Make a Guild Mission subforum, plz!
Are there any public Guild Missions on Aurora Glade today, 6th of april?
Do we have a “Guild Mission” forum?
I think all professions should be treated equally. Why should thieves have immunity to “chill” when it comes to skill recharge rate?
Chill should affect thieves’ initiative regen as it does on any other profession.
I would like to know if “chill” (-66% skill recharge rate) affects thives’ initiate regen?
And if it doesn’t ……….. shouldn’t it?!?
I like this “chill build” idea. I made a similiar BM – Chill build, to ensure my bird and jag could make the hits. Concentrated on chill duration and pet dmg. Awesome!
Not suited for dungeons though, imo.
Btw. remember to make the chill combo finishers!
Edit. Sup Sigil of Chilling is also good to consider (20% chill duration)

Frostgorge is the most awesome map. Ever!
looks really good, but not much going on there, hence it’s mostly empty. It mainly gets populated when it’s time for the Jormag to show on schedule, then the zone empties out apart from some gatherers and a few people leveling. Cursed Shore is loaded with meta events, lots of farming, good amount of gathering nodes. Frostgorge needs revamping, though not as bad as lost shores needing total revamp.
More high level meta events (read better drops) in Frostgorge would be really cool!
Beautiful scenery, awesome music, the right temperature (I’m Norn), and mjød (beer) as much as you can dream of!
Do not worry about these zones. I too find them not appealing because of its visuals and zombie-like creatures. Much prefer Frostgorge.
Frostgorge is the most awesome map. Ever!
thx for sharing data
A lot of people chose ranger to be an archer sniper and got stuck with crap DPS because reasons.
Yes, I’m aware of that. I chose ranger for the bows as well.
But Anet’s vision / policy for the ranger is based / build on pet. I doubt they will change that whether we like the pets or not.
There are numerous options and combinations for the crossbow. One of my thoughts for having a crossbow was that you could have a 1-handed bow. It would open for a lot of new fun and exciting builds.
Also the crossbow could be both single target damage (sniper, like wintersday) or multiple target weapon. See the pictures for inspiration.
How about we play the class we feel most comfortable with, and you abandon ship only to come crying back when we get buffs. After all, the smart people stay with the class they like most.
Please read the post a little more carefully. I didn’t abandon the ranger, I still play it and surely enjoy the play style (as I said in the post).
My point was that you shouldn’t narrow your opportunities. Get out there and try out other professions. I tried warrior and did not like the play style despite everyone emphasis on the huge numbers. So I didn’t stay with the warrior.
Also, you don’t know how much other classes perform compared to ranger if you don’t try them. When you learn how much better other professions do dps/cc/support you get an idea of what ranger is missing. That said, I still solo pve with ranger because I like the arhcer style.
Finally, STOP defending a profession that has serious shortcomings. I love the ranger, but Anet has to make some changes in order to make the profession right.
Why choose Ranger, a pet based profession, if you don’t like to have pets!?!?
Anet has to make pets more viable. Taking them away is not the solution!
Why don’t we have Crossbows?!!???!
Ranger should have 1-handed crossbow (main hand) and off-hand crossbow.
Imagine having a main-hand crossbow with torch!! :-)
Or Sword with crossbow!!! That would be EPIC!
I love my ranger. I have over 800 hours with her (Norn female) and still enjoy the game with her. It’s awesome for solo pve. However, the lack of Ranger fixing and the recent on going nerfs made me try out new professions.
I leveled a Warrior to lvl 40. Nice stats, but incredible BORING play style.
Leveled a Thief to lvl 40. Fun play style, nice combos. Will keep it as an alt to level later on. Not strong in groups. I found it more like a lone wolf.
At the moment I’m leveling a Guardian. Really fun and love the diversity in weapons and skills. Awesome group support. But more difficult to stay alive compared to Ranger. But I will definitely go with the Guardian all the way to lvl 80. It has cool group supports that Ranger lacks.
Anet have made 8 different professions. At the moment, Ranger is one of the bottom feeders (stop denying it!) . We must work harder than any other profession just to do a fraction of dps / support / cc that others almost achieve effortlessly.
My point is, make new alts and leave the ranger for a moment. You might find a new profession that you enjoy. I still play my ranger but not in groups.
Also, less people playing the Ranger, Anet might actually notice that and do some tweaking (make decent pet AI, pet AoE immunity, Viable Spirits, Better trait synergies eg. traps should be in WS, buff to weapon dps)
That will never happen buddy.
But I agree 100% with you that trait and attribute synergies should be better.
Ranger has the worst trait tree. It is really messy and everything just looks randomly made.
In GW1 the trap traits were actually in Wilderness Survival, where it belongs!
I don’t understand why Anet changed that…………….
Would anyone else like to make deep under water darker? Like the EB JP dark room.
I would love to have darker abyss. Maybe with some under water torch to light your path.
Also, the nights should get darker as well.
lol, no you cannot crit on a dragon. logically how can a small ant sized human possibly deal critical dmg to a scale armored dragon.
Fus Ro Dah
I like mindlessly wandering ^^
I wouldn’t say mindless, but just wandering around in Shiverpeaks! Awesome maps and NO risen!
Also the first 30 levels of a new character.
Ranger needs to get more viable group contribution skills / utilities.
As it is now, ranger is the ultimate solo pve survivor and versatile roamer (imo) . But as soon as you put the ranger in a group, it gets uncomfortable and messy (compared to other professions).
Anet have already made a great foundation for group synergy with pets, spirits and traps. Unfortunately only the latter (traps) are somehow viable in groups. Both pets and spirits suffer from severe liability. They add very little to almost nothing to a group in eg. dungeons / www.
The ranger with pets, spirits and traps should be THE most wanted / loved profession in any group composition. That is not the case! Why?
We surely do have the right elements. Anet needs to polish pets, spirits and traps in order to make them more beneficial for the group. There are numerous of suggestions and ideas to improve ranger’s group contribution.
For example, ranger doesn’t necessarily need higher dps from the pets or traps, but it would be awesome if they could contribute more to the group. A pet could eg. passively affect allies / group just by being around. High dps pets could increase group damage on foes, tanky pets could give the group more toughness, “condition based” pets could increase group condition damage / duration and so on. (You get the picture!)
Spirits: There are pages of posts about how to improve spirits on the forum. Bottom line is that spirits are worthless as it is now. They should be more beneficial for the group.
My point is, that it doesn’t have to be something that buffs the ranger, but something that buffs the group. This kind of improvement wouldn’t result in any kind of balancing issues. It doesn’t make the ranger stronger, but makes the group stronger. (win-win)
Healing spring alone is just not acceptable to be the only thing a ranger brings to the group. Ranger has a lot of potential, but the final touch is still missing.
I would love to se the ranger get better group attributes!
(edited by awe extender.1908)
Kudos for the Guild Tower Shield.
I think it looks so awesome that I’m going to make a guardian! Probably a Norn Guardian!
Now that BM build is kind of ruined, could you devs at least make a proper trapper build?!!?
Thanks for all the inputs!
My main is a ranger and I love the play style. I just wished ranger could contribute a little more though.
I have a level 30 warrior, but imo it’s a very boring play style. I have also a lvl 30 thief which I enjoy more than the warrior but I dont think www needs another thief?! I see too many thieves.
It’s a close race between guardian and elementalist……
Which profession contributes most to www?
I’m not interested in JP camping or solo roaming to do 1 vs 1. I don’t have the need to get most kills but to actually play www in order to get the server points?
Which profession makes the server win?
Or is it just about huge zerg vs zerg spamming most AoE? In that case necro / elem would do well, right?
Could someone with experience perhaps make a list with pros cons?
Elementalist: pros / cons
warrior:
ranger:
necromancer:
guardian:
thief:
engineer:
mesmer:
thanks to all helping out!
