I had a legitimate mid-game disconnect after my power flashed at home. I’m not relogging, as I have no desire to (further) punish my teammates for my misfortune.

Be like me. Save your teammates from your misfortune. Don’t make them lose a pip.

The idea being teams of roughly equally MMR’d folks faced off against an immediately higher or lower MMR group of folks.

So you’re saying that deliberately forcing non-competitive matches was a good thing?

GW2 does not currently have an MMR system in place to make team-stacking balanced. Winning or losing is guaranteed to give 1 pip or lose 1 pip. TCG could theoretically face 5 random pugs that don’t have HoT and the reward/loss would remain constant.

Given the system that we have, deliberately making one team stronger than the other is absolutely the wrong direction to take. If the pip-range for winning or losing were larger, say 1-5 pips for winning or losing depending on the MMR spread between teams, then it would be more reasonable, but this is not the system we have, and this is exactly what has contributed to an absolutely great deal of frustration for many people in the game.

As it stands, low MMR players are absolutely being punished for simply being low MMR, while high MMR players are being rewarded for having high MMR (which is beyond stupid when a matter of a few games can artificially inflate or deflate your MMR to extreme points on a new account.) Evidence of this exists with the numerous players that struggled to get out of Sapphire or Ruby on their main account with potentially thousands of games played, but steamrolled to Diamond or Leg with 75% win ratios on f2p accounts.

I reiterate: the current system cannot support or sustain a playerase when winning or losing awards the same change in pips, regardless of any potentially existing skillgap between the two teams (and in this previous season, the skillgaps between each team were often significant.)

Hey folks,

It’s been a while since we’ve commented on leagues, so here’s a brief update.

There’s definitely room for improvement in the league system, and it’s safe to say that it’s the team’s highest priority now that we’ve signed off on everything going in for the July release. It’s still a bit early to talk about specifics, but I do think we can talk about some of the goals we have for the changes:

  • Improve match quality
  • Make divisions more reflective of player skill
  • Make leagues feel more rewarding after you’ve placed in your appropriate division

We’re still determining the scope of the project, but I do want to be clear that it’s unlikely that these changes will be in for S4. Once we get a bit further in the dev process I’ll see if I can give an update on our thoughts/direction.

-Grouch

Will there be any sort of soft-reset for MMR or should players that had big loss streaks at literally any point in season 3 just skip the trouble and not play from day one?

It’s great that you’re planning on changes in season 5, but you need to not allow your playerbase to become so jaded and discouraged that they quit before it gets here. Something needs to be done in the short-term.

Not looking forward to it at all because I don’t think that matchmaking will be improved in any meaningful way to make it more indicative of individual skill and not somehow punish players or benefit them just because.

However, I still have 45 wins, 50k rank points, 10 wins on 2 professions and 3 division crossings (which I’ll only have to actually grind through Sapphire thanks to making Diamond this season) to get my wings, so I’ll have to suck it up and punish myself by playing enough to finish before I can go back to doing kitten I might actually enjoy.

If Anet fixes the long list of things that make sPvP frustrating, I’d love to play it more, but I just don’t have a lot of faith at this time. It’s just too much to do in a single patch to get right.

If more viable power builds enter the meta, there’ll be absolutely no reason to nerf condi-berserker. It’s already easily hard countered by power-berseker, and a decent hybrid stealth mes can ruin any warriors day too. Only trouble is what can be brought to the meta overall. Beating the war is no good if you get beat up by all the revs constantly.

Despite everyone saying this, I always found myself going 50/50 with most condi warriors. If I don’t get into zerker asap, or if headbutt misses, I’m often dead before I get 3 bars of adrenaline. I’ve been burst down in a matter of seconds by condi wars after dodging/blocking as much as I could. If they’re lucky and evade my GS primal a couple of times, or if it clears the wrong condis, I’m usually kittened pretty quickly.

However, this is with me running GS/Axe+Shield and not rifle, which may be a huge factor. I imagine the ability to kite with Rifle will completely hardcounter a condi war, currently. As it stands, melee just dies in a matter of seconds if they wait out your defenses and actually land mace primal.

Started in Emerald, got to Ruby in about 3 days with ~70% win ratio though about 150 games. Finished the season in T1 Diamond with 321 total games played. 161-160 win/loss ratio. Didn’t hit Diamond until my 301st game.

Biggest win streak: 8 games, about four times throughout the season. Biggest losing streak: 14 games, a couple of days after hitting Ruby.

I grinded my way to Ruby at the very beginning of the season, playing as much as I could. I was Ruby when many of the early legends were still Ruby. When I hit Ruby, I decided to slow down and try not to burn myself out. This was a MASSIVE mistake. I played only 3 games a day for a few days, winning easily until a week or so had gone by. At that point, I found myself playing with significantly worse players all of a sudden (presumably the good ones in my MMR range just kept grinding towards Diamond and beyond and got too far from my pip range to queue with anymore) and went on a 14 game losing streak. Literally nothing I did made a difference in those games, most were substantial blowout losses.

After struggling with ungodly terrible teammates for another few weeks, I decided to just say kitten it and switched to power warrior for the rest of the season and started to win more games because I could burst multiple people more reliably and stomp better with Dolyak Signet. Securing stomps or being able to do tons of cleave damage to downed foes made a MASSIVE difference in my games, as the rest of my team was literally too stupid to stomp or cleave themselves, often costing us teamfights when I couldn’t do it myself.

After my losing streak, my level of teammates never improved. I was forced to hard carry on a power warrior for the next 150 games if I wanted to win games. I still lost a LOT, because no single player can reliably carry games. I lost too many games where I was successfully holding home 1v3 and seeing my team lose mid 4v2 or 4v1. I lost games to quad necro/dragonhunter where I would instantly down 2 players only to see my team not stomp or cleave and end up getting killed and rallying everyone.

Honestly, I only need to hit Ruby in season 4 (everything else should be completed by then) to get my wings, and then I’m done with sPvP. I have no faith that Anet will improve matchmaking and will punish myself to get the wings and then move on to WvW or more likely other games.

It’s funny, despite spending a significant amount of time PvPing this season, trying to improve, learn how to counterplay other classes and everything, as soon as I hit Diamond I almost completely quit playing. I’ve played 20 games in two weeks, and honestly have no desire to play again. That’s how bad this season was, how un-fun, demoralizing, frustrating, etc. Even when I was on win streaks, I wasn’t enjoying it.

I play necro and warrior, and I’ve been playing power warrior for the second half of the season. If warrior gets nerfs, it will likely be to mace primal, which is legit overtuned, and wont really impact power wars.

If warrior does get overnerfed (and there’s always a decent chance of this happening since most players don’t understand how to counter warriors), I’ll just play my necro, which is ridiculously strong but very much under the radar, and be fine.

It will be unfortunate if warriors get overnerfed since I actually enjoy the class in PvE as well as PvP, but we’ll see what happens.

Hell, if matchmaking is as awful in season 4 as it is now, I’ll grind my kitten off to finish my achievements and then never touch sPvP again anyway, so it may not even matter how warrior is adjusted in the long run.

Overwatch implemented ranked matches two days ago. Since then, my win ratio has significantly increased, presumably due to many of the better players switching over to OW, leaving GW2 with people who are still just trying to grind out pips or something.

Basically, OW pulled all the decent players away, allowing me to more easily win games.

For allowing me to hit Diamond. As soon as ranked play in Overwatch began, the quality of my opponents absolutely tanked. I’ve been playing strictly Greataxe Berserker for the last two weeks, and the last couple of days either something clicked or something on the other team unclicked. I’m frequently 1v2ing and defeating opponents, frequently downing multiple players at once in teamfights, and just generally having a significantly larger impact on each game.

I’ve gone back to probably a 65-70% win ratio in the last couple of days after having dropped to around a 40% before that.

I was tier 4 Ruby a few days ago and was lucky to break even on pips each day, but the last couple I’ve had a 5 game win streak, a few 3 game win streaks, a 4 game win streak that got me to Diamond, and most importantly, only one 3 game losing streak, and only a couple of 2 game slides.

My blood pressure owes a big thanks to Blizzard for releasing ranked play before the end of Season 3, since it really made it easier to carry poor teammates since my opponents were no longer as awful.

Balancing SPvP individually——-

- This is probably the single most important change that the SPvP community needs whether you realize it or not. Not only does this make sense, but since SPvP is already isolated, not one change you make here effects the rest of the game. The way it currently works the devs expect us as players to think about the rest of the game before giving changes to a specific game type, however this way of thinking will never create good balance and the reason why is the majority of changes people suggest are obviously only made and will work for Spvp. WvW and PvE are very different in terms of balance and changes for one often conflict with the other two making the change almost meaningless to begin with.

The Lesh Prince recently developed some tech that makes skill-splitting more feasible than it was previously – you’ll see some PvP (and PvE) splits in the next balance update. It’s important to understand that changes will still need to be global, but we’ll definitely have a bit more flexibility moving forward.

Keeping parity between modes when possible is important to us – but when it’s not feasible we’ll look at splits.

edit: that clickbait though

Quick question,

After season 4, with the Ascension being attainable through a secondary means, will progress made currently shorten the necessary grind to get it next year, or will we have to complete an entirely new set of achievements to attain it?

Basically, I just reached Year of the Ascension 4, and I’m wondering if I stopped now, would the fact that I’ve completed 1-3 give me a head-start on attaining the wings later, or would I have to do something different in it’s entirety?

I know you can’t give all the info as to how to attain it post-season 4, but curious if you could shed any light on this point.

I have to wonder what you guys that haven’t experienced this get out of constantly trying to explain to everyone how bad these players are. Do you feel compelled to justify your own win streaks.

Just to be clear, are you making the argument that you have a 20% winrate and it’s not your fault? I just want to make sure I know what you’re trying to say.

You’re also making a huge assumption with your math that people with poor winrates can play 100’s of games. I’ve maybe played 130 this season and I’m in legendary right now. And now I’m stuck because the progression gives me 3 wins… then 4 losses, rinse and repeat.

the ‘progress fairy’ doesn’t ‘give’ you 3 wins and 4 loses, you have simply progressed to the point where you are slightly below average. How else could it be, at some point this happens to all apart from the most skilled teams in legendary.

Slightly below average? The player pool is so small in legendary it keeps pitting me against people on the top of the leaderboards. So I don’t play it any more. And now people are complaining of hourlong queues in legendary. Funny how that works.

That’s not below average — that’s below the top players’ average.

But, you are in legendary? what do you expect to face? noobs?

Why have matchmaking consider MMR range if it’s just going to ignore it half the time?

I honestly don’t care if the rewards are account bound or character bound because I have virtually no desire to even have another character, much less need to have one at 80, especially with no map completion progress.

As it stands, one of my 80’s is nothing but a bank mule, and my other two open slots will probably end up being the same, if not PvP alts for alternative builds.

Technically no, but the matchmaking algorithm has created a form of one. In any truly competitive game, MMR hell does not exist assuming the teams are either even or gain/loss is normalized based on the difference in skill. Given that season 3 is entirely based around matching teams up against other teams that are significantly better or worse than their own, yet pip reward or loss remains constant, no argument can rightfully be made that there is no form of MMR heaven or hell.

bLind.6278

but is it possible for someone with low MMR to always be put on the losing side despite being this late in the season where most high MMR players have already climbed out of sapphire?

Essentially, what this means is their MMR is so low that they are the bottom of the bottom of the pip range and there is no other players lower than them? in that case, there should only be a few of these players because not everyone can be bottom of bottom.

The first 150 games this season I had a 65% win ratio halfway through ruby. It took 4 days to ruby, around 7 to get to 150 games. After that, I took a few days off to relax and regenerate after the grind. From that point I’ve played around 110 games and have managed to tank my win percentage to just below 50%. The difference in teammates is absolutely dramatic. Most of my games are completely non-competitive, any that are close are probably due largely in part to me 1v3ing only to see my teammates lose one point 3v1 and the other point 1v1.

I get that you can’t win every game. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the most skilled player in the world. I make mistakes, there are things that I need to improve upon. But going from a 65% win ratio to a 49% arbitrarily? If anything, I’ve improved over the course of the season.

I tried joining a guild, but inconsistent teammates due to them letting anyone and everyone in just made things worse. My other friends quit after seeing what this season was all about.

I’m honestly not far from doing the same. I want to like this game so badly, I want to enjoy PvP, but the system just works against me every step of the way. Every single step.

8.) Show our MMR, atleast if get blowout matches we know if we are just out played or plain suck.

9.) 5-5 Matchmaking not 5-6 or 5-7. Thats why we should see MMR. (i.e. Team A 2100 MMR vs Team B 2200 MMR)

10.) We should See MMR so we know if there is an existent matchmaking or atleast a working one.

These are the three key points in my opinion. Beyond more balanced matchmaking, if the spread is significant, players should either not lose pips, or the average pip-per-game should be increased. IE: a win will normally give 3 pips in an even MMR match. If you beat someone significantly lower than you, you only receive 1 or 2 pips, and if you lose to someone better, you only lose 1 or 2 pips depending on spread.

The fact that you’re deliberately matched against players stronger or weaker than you, yet every game has the exact same reward is just dumb.

Honestly, the entire system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. In ANY legitimate Elo/MMR system, the amount you win or lose should be weighted based on the skill of the player(s) you’re fighting. Since we can’t see our MMR (and it has no meaningful impact on our matches barring being high enough to get free wins from the laughable team-stacking algorithm,) it should impact our pips.

I don’t agree totally with this concept of MMR hell. There have been plenty of cases where players, on long losing streaks, have passed over their accounts to others (yes I know TOS and all) and have proceeded to move them out to other divisions.

MMR hell is where you’re better than your group but not good enough to carry them. It’s basically where you’re marginally (and typically noticeably) better, but not extremely better to the point where you significantly impact the game.

Hi Ithilwen. I’m a long-time PvP forum lurker, rare poster. I’ve seen many of your threads and finally had some time to sit down and respond.

I understand your plight, maybe not from personal experience (I.e. tanked mmr), but I see where you are coming from. The poster above has a good point. It’s important to play when there are more players online. Regardless of one’s personal convictions about the MMR system, I think it’s fairly obvious that it is important to play when more people are queuing. Not only do you get much more bearable queue times, but your matches tend to be more even due to a higher player population.

It makes zero difference when you queue, one team will ALWAYS be stacked. The only difference is that during prime time, there is a smaller chance that one team will be stacked with significantly better players, and a closer margin MIGHT exist.

The next point I want to bring up: does matchmaking really force onesided match-ups? Well, the answer is that we as the players do not truly know. We can provide personal experience to back our claims, but we do not know for a fact.

Evan stated early in the season that the typical player spread was something alone the lines of:

4 v 5
4 v 5
4 v 6
5 v 6
5 v 7

The teams are stacked every game. The lead PvP-designer said as much.

Although I have had a drastically different experience in PvP than you (based on your pictures, gameplay video, and posts), I can’t say you are wrong to feel upset. However, I would argue that someone whose MMR was lower than it should be would be able to outplay many of their opponents, and in the long-run be able to reverse losing streaks. Over 500 games this season with similar results suggests to me that your MMR may be very close to where it should be.

Just my two cents.

Being able to outplay your opponents may win you a few more games than you otherwise would win, but it’s a team game and ultimately you are only 20% of your team. The other 4 players on your team have a very significant impact on the game given how close each capture point is. A team that doesn’t rotate or teamfight properly can lose all 3 points very quickly. Individual effort is incredibly marginal in a lot of games. I’ve held home point all game through multiple 1v1’s, 1v2’s and 1v3’s in some games, yet my team was consistently unable to capture either mid or far.

Being better than the other team helps, but unless you are EXTREMELY better than them, and happen to counter their class, it wont matter. A warrior likely wont be able to burst down a decent ele before support comes regardless of how good the warrior is.

In the end, it’s not a day versus night issue, or if you queue during prime time. If you want to win, you have to happen to play when your MMR happens to be on the higher side of your range.

What keeps you from watching pvp on twitch?

Because their experience is not indicative whatsoever of what the typical player will see. Many streamers are near the top levels of MMR, meaning they win their games easily, their teammates do what they’re supposed to, and the streamer comments that he’s not even trying while he’s winning 500-50.

I think working on why they AFK is a better solution.

This will literally NEVER happen with the current PvP dev team. These are the people that thought intentionally stacking teams was a A+ idea for a competitive game.

Why I don't have any sympathy

in PvP

I main warrior and don’t know how to play anything else and I got to ruby season 1 SOLO when It was trash, season 2 SOLO when it was trash, and Diamond now season 3 SOLO when it is good but not even the best and I got my Legendary done. And I am not even that good.

So I have really no sympathy for the people complaing, I bet you would never have been able to get to ruby in S1 on a warrior if you can’t get to ruby on your OP class.

I got midway through Sapphire in s2 on a warrior in six days despite having virtually never played sPvP before (apart from getting to rank 20 through primarily hotjoin matches). I’m nearly Diamond this season, solo.

You don’t deserve the wings any more than I do, but because you happened to actually play in season 1 and 2, you have them, and I don’t.

got a 9 game win streak and then...

Had a 7 game win streak two days ago, needed a 10 game to hit Diamond. Lost 1, won 1, lost 3 today, quit.

Maybe I’ll get lucky and actually get a decent teammate tomorrow.

Knowing that I could’ve done literally nothing to make it so I could’ve won either of those 3 games I lost today really made me feel better about it, too. Definitely.

It really is a tough problem to fix. I mean, if they take steps to shorten queue times, then that means there is more likely of a chance for you to be paired with enemies way above your skill level, or allies way below it (and vice-versa). This would further promote the “flip-flop” / win-loss nature of pip progression.

I’m not sure how to go about solving the issue, really. I suppose the only thing to do is to somehow make PvP more appealing to have a larger player-base to select from. But then that leads into a catch-22 with the issue above.

It’s not like teams are at all even now, so widening the spread really couldn’t hurt.

That being said, literally nothing will change before Season 4, because Anet purposefully doesn’t make changes mid-season for some reason that is beyond me.

Chances of reaching Legendary?

I have a 50% winrate and I just made Ruby. With just 20 days left in the season however it may look doubtful but then again I won against teams with Primo and Exalted Legends (and Illustrious but for our purposes unranked doesn’t count) and even had some on my team (suggesting the MM deems them in my MMR range?) so there’s hope.

Edit: I don’t run staff in PvP I was just taking some pictures with it.

play ele, easy games , easy life , easy carries

You had a significantly higher win ratio for the season, so your experiences wont compare to the typical 50% player. At all.

That being said, I’d give OP approximately a 1% chance of hitting Legendary by solo-queuing for the rest of the season. His chances will increase significantly with a premade, assuming they’re not idiots.

Pvp still boring on this game?

in PvP

Balance is pretty good, but MMR is probably the worst system I’ve ever seen in 25+ years of gaming.

Anet designed the current season to intentionally stack all of the best players in the game on one team, so players with higher MMR are literally steamrolling their way to legendary with 80%+ win ratios, while lower MMR’s struggle to make any progress whatsoever.

Beyond that, the system has been made so un-fun (probably 90% of the games you play will be 500-150 stomps) that most people just outright quit once they hit legendary, and those that don’t are stuck with 15-30 minute queues.

If you’re coming back for raids or PvE content you’ll be okay. If you’re interested in PvP, I’d avoid it pretty hard.

Also, I’ll probably be banned for this post.

Mace fits the theme better than anything else, actually. Tons of maces in typical death knight type lore, or shadow priests, etc. Many of them used some form of mace, too.

As it is, necro only has one condi-specific mainhand, so mace would be a nice alternative to scepter, potentially.

How I got over this season's poor matchmaking

As someone who lost a game to 4 guardians earlier today because my team literally argued against not standing in their traps? I’ve spent my day trying to find other games to play full-time.

I’ve tried my best to enjoy PvP, and despite enjoying most of the rest of the game, I just can’t get past the state of PvP.

4 guardians? Even I know you dodge thru the traps (which 95% of the time will be centered on point) or send pets/minions to trigger them, then destroy guard while all the toys are on cooldown.

Well, the other 4 players on my team would disagree with your strategy of avoiding them or triggering them from afar.

Keeping Legends in the Game

in PvP

Posted by: bLind.6278

bLind.6278

Half of the legends win 85% of their games in complete stomps and the other half loses 85% of their games in complete stomps.

There’s a reason that most play unranked and just kitten around. Waiting 30 minutes for a queue for a game that’s decided based on your win % isn’t fun, and Anet doesn’t have any intention of changing their system.

There’s a reason that the majority of people quit pvping immediately after getting their wings. There’s a reason that the majority of people quit pvping immediately after getting legendary.

There is ZERO reason to try and make suggestions when Anet will NEVER do anything about it.

I’ve done numerous t3 dailies in thauma with few issues. Biggest problem I see is that people are generally too stupid to understand the tile mechanics and regularly kill themselves and teammates.

It’s honestly a fight that gets significantly easier as more people die because you don’t have to worry about them killing you because of their own stupidity.

Three months with this matchmaking

in PvP

bLind.6278

I’m honestly done caring. Anet has made zero effort to make this season enjoyable whatsoever, and created possibly the single worst matchmaking system in the history of competitive leagues.

Despite overwhelming criticism and suggestions, Anet has once again remained completely silent on an immensely unpopular system, without so much as a token “we’re reading and making plans” that they would give to other game modes.

I’ll continue playing not because I enjoy sPvP, but because I simply don’t have anything better to do, and despite the system being an absolute dumpster fire, I’d like to continue improving on the extremely slim chance that season 4 is actually playable.

Fortunately I only need to hit Diamond this season or next and Ruby otherwise to finish my meta achievements, so as soon as I get where I need to I’m gonna do literally everything I can to deliberately ruin the gaming experience for everyone else I play with, because that’s what anet has taught me to do.

I know you’re angry, a lot of us are and have a right to be but try not to let the bitterness have you upsetting someone elses enjoyment. Just walk away from the game and do something else for a while.

It’s not intentionally to ruin other people’s experiences, just a side effect from playing whatever build I feel like playing in a system that isn’t enjoyable.

Like the majority of people who are no longer farming achievements for the back piece, I’ll be able to actually play to enjoy myself instead of worrying about pips or winning on certain classes, etc.
