Kinda entertaining in low tier play. If your mmr is anything above 50% you are regularly getting opponents who would tear through this faster than wet tissue paper. I also wish blast gyro was a thing, it’s just too unreliable.

HGH gives healing mist a condi cleanse + might stacks. HGH is basically par for the engineer course, so if you run a viable build, healing mist has 1 cleanse.

Hmm…sounds like it would cause reveal.

Even if it doesn’t, I still think you’re better off with Hoelbrak since burning does so much more damage than other condis. That’s also why I wouldn’t drop FT for a condi build like this.

Hoelbrak with flamethrower…. then points out burning and down puts condi. All in the same small paragraph. So much contradict, such a small place.

Btw krait does significantly reduced damage, for 3s. The proc CD is 9s. I like krait, but it has adds no survivability and the dmg output is not high enough to offset.

Expertise does increase my durations, which is useless vs. cleanse classes, but nice against thief, DH, warrior. It has brought 2v1 into a different light as my condi are still procing when I go down. Definitely gotten the better of some downed spam 1 duels after my condi’s all tick another 4s when I’m down.

The ‘burstiness’ this build can induce into condi with rabid amulet makes using rabid very viable. The difference is 5% crit on wanderer’s. Only reason I use or mention it.

If you’re going in premade, then krait over undead all day. I thought the same, but running with no perma swiftness made me appreciate toolbelt on slick shoes, and the added cc is so clutch if getting focused.

I actually like the hammer + 2 tweaks to above build, for stronghold. The build does the most good on a node, and is downright op with the right team composition. I chose not to take ft anymore, used to use instead of slick shoes pre-hot. The ‘secret’ weapon is really the rune of the undead. With one trait swap, toughness not only gets stacked and mitigates damage, but it also improves dd and condi damage. It’s synergy with rabid is really nice. Expertise and that precision tho.

Red headed step child type build, but it’s dirty. I switch between wanderer’s amulet and rabid. Been doing more wanderer’s recently for the precision. Hard as hell to kill, and as long as you are familiar with elixir hotkeys, the lack of vitality makes little difference against another condi class. I find even the sneak gyro underwhelming, so that is another that can be switched for a preferred elite. I still like the crate for when I am defending a node.

IMHO I find toss elixir b to be very effective. I do play primarily spvp, so to that disclaimer, scrapper/hgh builds are op as kitten right now. Particularly in a team fight, we can basically spam elixirs, and their throw counterparts, it’s awesome. I used to max out at maybe 18 stacks of might and that was for brief amounts of time, usually able to sustain more like 12. Scapper spec allows me to sit around 22 without even trying, when I am full on combat it’s always 25. Losing retaliation on elixir b would be catastrophic. The synergy with hammer/eg/elixirs combined with these new tank skills centered around toughness make the scrapper a monstrosity in a node brawl. I preferred the original leap mechanic as it allowed you to do a damaging circuit around a single target, or the whole node. I still enjoy now being able to target the real mes, and run them down. Without even considering clones. First two leaps let me shatter them for caster. Third puts me in the mes face, hammer 5, eg 2, throw elixir b, down elixir b, throw other elixirs, welcome to the thunder dome. Give me free hero points because I hate the pve grind and I want my wvw hammer. That is all.

I am super not excited to have to go hunting hero points again to play with hammer in pve. My understanding is I must essentially hunt down every hero point in all maps to fill my new scapper spec.

Please correct me if I am mistaken because I find this a huge turn off. If I have to redo all the old maps, may as well just retire engi and start fresh with another class. *sad face

I mean, have we never mmo before? This is probably the most common QQ of all games with a pvp element. If they could “just fix it” I’m sure it would be done. As an avid pvp player, I’m tired of these threads. I can only imagine how exhausting the same exact complaint, day after day, all from people ‘who don’t rant, but here goes…". If you want to play gw2 and win every fight every time so it’s ‘balanced’ in your private universe, may I invite you to explore the vast pve options offered.

Did you ever stop and think that perhaps the issue of your losing streaks has less to do with anet, and more to do with your gameplay? I’m willing to bet using burn at all is considered ‘cheese build’ to you too.

Underwhelming. Gyros are not tuned to keep up with the speed of gameplay engineer excels at. They do cool stuff, just not in the area you need or at the speed say HT can be dropped, procced, and detonated for additional effect. Hammer is a hammer *yawn. Watered down mix of tool kit and guardian animations.

The only cool new thing I really like is the offset 2nd- leap of hammer #3. No, not a troll. This skill can be used to whip around a target 3 times, screwing with their orientation and throwing their ground targeting to the wind. It damages, and procs any fields you interact with i.e. drop and proc HT, hammer 3 in a tight circuit around enemy and drop their hp while you end up overhealing, detonat HT for maximum heals. Just takes a quick mouse movement, but once you get it, you find excuses to do it. Only build I found enjoyable in the slightest was 16-22 stacks of might-full elixirs across the board, basically a rampage warrior at that point and it’s a good time.

I understand burning is op at the moment. But why slot into it so much? What do you do when your burning stacks get cleansed? How do you cover your burning stacks if that’s all you can apply? Consider the life long lesson about the risk of putting all your eggs into one basket.

I can stax 18 burning in one rotation! Guard cleanses all, necro regifts them back to you, ele cleanses, mes stealth cleanses, warrior rampages… all burning all the time is effective against one cleanse-weak class: engineer. And only if they have no idea what they are doing. Condition duration is garbage due to cleanse. Stack condition damage, not burning.

you stunlock them when you stack 10+ burns, that’s why i run rifle. the power damage from carrion isn’t that bad either.

I definitely hear you on carrion, and offered a carrion/rune of scavenging synergy above. Stunlock is hardly perma though, and unless they are really new, break the stun and cleanse. I just don’t see enough cover conditions available to rifle, for my fat fingers at least. Gonna have to give it a whirl anyways! Whatever works, right?

I know you lose a cleanse from initial, but toolbelt skill is your second cleanse, and it synergizes well with hgh. Has 2s lower ‘cast’ time than drop, overcharge, detonate. Same cooldown as HT, and might stacks. Seems to work in a pinch, when you should go down and have like 400 hp, somehow it always seems to get in there, offer protection, and a second chance; whereas I sometimes QQ as HT sits next to my downed body.

H has some very nice synergy with the Alchemy and Inventions lines. If you dont run those then its nowhere near as good as turret.
If you run those its potentially as good (which means as amazingly great) as HT with less overheads and things to go wrong as you clearly have experienced

Not an issue of speed. It’s an issue of I am hauling kitten , and sometimes the overload is too slow. I usually catch the edge of the field with blast, but why worry? When I run HGH I run elixir h. I think the heal is comprable, and the animation is such that I can chain drink and throw h for 2 cleanses which is = to HT cleanse. Without HGH, HT all day. I still prefer p/p over rifle, IA with blowtorch at melee range immediately covered by poison, blind, confusion, and bleed from pistol 3, 2, 1. This is 6 stacks for about 20k of burning alone. Add 1200 poison, 1200 confusion, THEN elixir gun stacks, then flame thrower stacks. This is napkin math simply from base damage. More than half of the above damage procs will crit, passive attacks (also applying crits with bleeding and additional burning stacks), and the perma retaliation takes care of the oh kitten burst cc and run away most classes do. 2k toughness with a total of 3k+ armor from rune and emblem synergy make up for running with no gear shield, and ruin direct damage. I find soldier engi is my favorite class to 1v1 as grenade barrage can be sidestepped easily, magnet can be avoided by hiding behind a pebble, and their sustain dmg just won’t cut it in a prolonged fight.

Above is a guidea written with premade spvp in mind. However, with some minor substitutions it is actually a pretty fun build to run in living world and wvw. It’s not 1v1 king against tanky wvw builds, but it definitely holds it’s own, and you can solo camps in less than 3 mins once you get used to pulling, kiting, and the build.

I run this with almost primarily berserker, one condi dmg accessory, and one piece of assassin’s armor, kitten’s power comes from crits and your crits proc burning.
Substitute superior runes of the ogre. These are cheaper to get ahold of a 6/6 set, boost your base damage with power and a flat 4%, best of all you have essentially perma rock dog companion for all your solo needs. It adds to dps(some is more than none), is actually a fairly effective tank, and works great as a distraction target if you find yourself in over your head.

Substitute superior sigil of force for a total base dmg boost of 11%, and superior sigil of accuracy for passive crit boost of 7%. Unbuffed, no food or utility, this build sits at 64.75% chance to crit. Again, crits are what make SD viable so it’s important not to skimp on crit potential.

Substitute stim pack for HGH. No elixirs in this build and that fury is excellent for the build.

Substitute battering ram for elixir s. This gives toolkit for melee if you must, perma swiftness, and oh kitten button in gear shield. Caltrops isn’t horrible if you need to gtfo there either. Throw wrench is the real skill, causes cripple does decent dmg and procs SD. Rifle turret is eh, but the 6s cooldown on surprise shot which does nice dmg and ofc pros SD. These will both crit well into 3-5k each. Battering ram is a personal favorite of mine, for no reason other than it gives the trifecta of toolbelt skills that are target guided, do good damage, and ofc bring the lightning. Don’t forget that SD chains to other enemies as well, it’s pretty powerful imo. The primary skill proc of battering ram can help buy time to get gear shield up and drop HT if you get in a hairy situation. Does damage, and a knockback. As far as I can tell, it will interrupt even enemies with stability, even if it doesn’t knock back. The toolbelt skill is the focus ofc and it does really great dmg, high range, procs SD, and has a reasonable cooldown of only 12s.

Bring food, and engi precision drinks ftw. This is a pretty easy build to use, I found it very effective when trying to make that leap from total engi nab to mediocre engi nab. I still play it today when I roam, though I keep a condi set in my bag. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do, gl.

I run this all the time in ranked with great success:

P/p, elixir gun, flamethrower, elixir s. The order is based on my key binds, nothing more.

Firearms 1,1,3
Inventions 2,3,2
Alchemy 2,2,1

Rabid amulet, rune of undead
Sigil of torment, sigil of generosity

Use pistols 2,3 as openers to burn cleanses. Drop elixir gun 5, 4 to get first burst of retaliation, and the 2k toughness of undead/rabid makes dd pretty negligible. Watch opponents health bar for their cleanse then open up with condis; p/p 4, 2, 3, eg 1, 3, 5, 4. Keep eg 5,4 up as its is quick cd with condi cleanse, healing, and retaliation. This combo reks thieves, warriors, soldier engi, rangers, and shatter mes. Flamethrower use as interrupt, oh kitten 5, napalm to block a side of node, 1, 2 for dps and burn application. I use elixir h for additional might stacking, but those attached to HT will find it just as effective for healing/cleanse purposes, just no interrupt.

Undead synergizes well with rabid to stack toughness, and stacks condition DAMAGE, as opposed to duration (burn or otherwise). Duration makes your condi’s op on paper, but with almost all other classes ability to cleanse regularly, duration goes out the window. Need damage to “burst.” The additional toughness drives direct damage dealers bonkers when their rotation takes you to half health, maybe.

Torment sigil is aoe application, and hurts targets that move, and to stop moving in pvp is to die anyways. Torment is the rock you put on the hard place in 1v1 1v2. Forces most classes to disengage and try again, giving you time to heal and cooldowns to pop. Generosity sounds like crap on paper, but in a 1v1 with d/d cele ele, it is amazing, and doesnt hurt against burn guards. It is possible to stand toe to toe with them. As long as you leave fire rings, cleanse burn stacks (of which you have 4 total in this build, 5 with HT) their direct damage breaks against the toughness of the build.

The only hard counters to this build are good signet/condi transfer necro, and good pu condi mesmer. Good being the key term. If you are careful with opening Condi, it’s easy to spook necro into procing early, then they are just hp bags that your condi’s eat quick. If they wait though, and force you to stack, then transfer, it’s rip. Condi mes is the same kind of deal. They have excellent mobility and escape/target drop with stealth. A decent mes will run a few circles around you, get you to lose the real one, then unload. I find a good mes to be the most effective counter to this build. If they are patient and time well, they will come out of stealth as your retaliation drops and quick burn with condi. 2k toughness is great against direct damage, but the 15k hp doesn’t give alot of room for mistakes of you aren’t able to reflect condi application.

Keeping retaliation up is important, and easy, once you get used to it, and very very strong, combined with spray and pray poison/condi cleanse, cripple shot, and spamming 1, elixir gun is very strong as defensive weapon, and covers your high dps condi very well. Elixir s for stealth. Amazing on approaches, or to disengage in a fight and restart from a better angle. Classic stomp/res assist, and with self regulating defenses, you can take a beating, then use double elixir s on top of a stealth kicker to get away, heal, and come back. Great for teams with strong rotation skills. It’s also a good way to kite off nodes if you get focused by 3 or more. You can’t fight them and win, so drag them off the node towards teammates. Flamethrower is great, has a little of everything, 5 defensive utility, 4 firefield and burning application, 3 throws off nodes, 2 is awesome dps even with low power, and 1 is an auto burn application and very nice on downed players. Just don’t get stuck using it on cooldowns the power creep works in a negative way if you don’t switch out to keep applying different condi to cover dps condi.

Supply crate for elite ftw. You drop f5 on a node with bunker down and end up with 10 or more health packs in a matter of seconds. These can be picked up while on elixir s so use that, go from dead to 2/3 health with one proc. I like to save my crate for team fights, but dropping it with immediate overcharge can and will change the tide of 1v1 or 5v5. The long cooldown is rough, but the skill is powerful, and the turrets hang around.

‘Short’ rundown of a p/p condi build I have found and particularly enjoy. You can switch carrion amulet and scavenging rune if you have some teammates you can rely on. Toughness build is fun in solo q, and thus far is the only engi build I have found in the current state of gameplay that can help carry in ranked. Gl.

Poor gold income in PVP

Also exclusively play pvp, and I make enough to make ascended armor/weaps, level cooking and jewelcrafting, work on pre’s. I am also rarely below 150-250 gold as my ‘cushion’. I think what he wants is enough to splurge on gems for those awful angel wings. Just my guess, but yea, you can make good money playing only pvp.

What an utterly asinine thread. There are so many gameplay issues I would so rather be focused on than this. Maybe try not to exacerbate the not-so-fond nickname, ‘fashion wars,’ so much. Realistic grenade tosses and preaching about mortar animation… is it really such a mystery why engi and those that play it get generally disregarded? Cmaaaaaan! Give me reliable cleanse and/or stunbreak, I will happily watch mortar shots come out of toons left kitten.

Cause I think at most we have 10 condi cleanse on 20-50s cooldowns, and this is simply spamming them… trying to use in a rotation means like 6 available, but more like 4. This is on a full elixir kiting build with rifle. Most viable builds have like 4 total with cd’s. We have to run away and dodge constantly, to usually get melted. We need the “perma” vigor, swiftness, regen.

Realistic…. sorry, I threw that out the window when my little alien with huge ears started shooting a flamethrower at my lion/mouse/Chinese dragon man holding a chainsaw for a greatsword…. it’s a game. Make the nades loftable. As an engi who successfully does not play grenades outside of some pve, even I see being able to throw them over thing as a viable use. We carry flash bangs but have to be within melee range to use properly, THAT is not realistic.

I saw golem elite skill. I think drones have gone by the wayside. Can I just say, great we are getting a second weapon type, hammers suck. Am I a barbarianeer now? Do I hit nails in my off time? Am I a clown? Do I amuse you? If we are going to deviate from the motif, can we use 1h sword so at least shield skills can be kept? Hammers are the worst choice you could have gone with, bar none.

In my opinion with hgh builds tools is better than invention. The reason is the 15% reduciton on tossic elixir which is really valuable for might stacking and for elixir Effects ( with elixir B you have 6 sec stab every 17 sec or so that is really strong )

the problem is that engi is soggy kitten. Our weakness is in our strength of having so many kits and so much variety. We are forced to make sacrifices in each build. Part of the power in p/p condi, for me, is survivability and I don’t think we have a stronger oh kitten than bunker down. I would be more inclined to trade alchemy for tools than inventions in this build, but if I am taking tools it’s for ranked q build.

Definitely viable. I sometimes run p/p, eg, ft, elixir s, elixir h, supply crate. Sigils of energy and torment. Rune of undead with rabid amulet. Firearms 1,1,3. Alchemy 2,1,1. Inventions 2,3,2. This has decent sustain with 2k toughness against dd builds. Have to be smart with cleanses, but you have 4 so time them and watch your boon/condi bar. The real secret weapon with this build is eg 5, then 4, for area retaliation. Lasts 6 seconds and is amazing burst against all classes/builds. Fairly quick recharge, and a good dd kicker that you can allow to launch you to safety. Otherwise keeps those pistol condi’s on cd, use incendiary ammo as second burning application(not first as it will get cleansed, p/p 4 good as opener), stack might as best you can with high and ft(about 7-10 easily sustainable). Otherwise take advantage of ft utility 5,3, and quick burst with 2. Use eg 3,5,4 to hit a whole group of enemies with condi, allies with cleanse/boons, and apply retaliation+dd kicker. Elixir s is oh kitten button and additional might/stealth for approaches. I enjoy taking sown bunker guads 1v1 in a couple of seconds with this build, and if you watch red circles, can stand against ele. Rangers are wet tissue as long as you avoid pet, thieves are paper too(excluding exceptionally good ones). The real issue I have found with this build is against a decent mes. If they get you wasting condi’s on clones, or resist trying to burst during retaliation, they hard counter this build fairly easily. It’s surprisingly hardy, and alot of fun. VERY EFFECTIVE COURTYARD BUILD. Great if you have team support in conquest, collapses under focus. Good 1v1, but with condi comes the build up time, and if in those few seconds back up arrives, it can be trouble. Gl/hf. Basz.6129 if you have questions or suggestions. Basically one must have and use voice speak to get others to queue with you because watching fight changes on the mini map and ally health in the corner is too much.

I have a kid at home who has supersonic hearing for my and the wife’s voices. I am not risking waking the beast for that, so I am relegated to solo queue, alot.

This is pretty fun for me alot of the time, but it gets increasingly frustrating when I get stuck with plainly new or low rank players all-the-time. Especially when it is up against 3-5 premade players. I know I am fairly decent at my class, and to go from maybe 2 hard earned wins to 5 losses consistently, really sucks. I don’t care about rank, it’s just not fun to get wiped on the floor by 3 players because my allies are all fighting one bunker necro and a thief.

Just make a queue that can only be entered alone. Tigers with tigers, wolves with wolves, etc. It’s exhausting.

You can pull at least 2 scouts by themselves. = less enemies when you get the central guys = a smart pull. I have never had a problem with this. I don’t kite in pve either, I dodge and move from aoe, hardly the same thing. Don’t miss was over general statement I meant to focus on grenades specifically as when I first started playing 700 hours ago on my engineer exclusively account, I found grenades to be difficult to use as landing them consistently where I needed them required a learning curve. I use the word glitch loosely, much like everyone uses kitten. There is no need to be a kittening little kitten and hide or kite the mobs. If you move into the camp, taking both duos of scouts out first, then engaging the central npc’s I find I can clear the camp taking less than 50% damage in under 3 minutes. Sorry I didn’t break it down clearly enough. I don’t think engineer has a playstyle that is particurly friendly to those who need task level instructons to be successful. Perhaps you should reassess who is not real familiar with the class.

In HoT, please consolidate useful skills and disregard waste (bounce shot, glue shot, elixir c alone) bounce shot should be an effect of EG 1, glue shot should have icd on crit for a real skill slot or utility<—— it’s a space filler which seriously nerfs p/p viability all around, elixir c should be a function inside of other elixirs or elixir gun. It is the only cleanse focus utility engi has, and simply does too little to ever have a clear function. Let HT secondary be affected by healing power. Make aed viable. Reconsolidate firearm/explosive traits; they are disorganized and neither synergies completely with clear dps rotation. 48 steps in optimal dps rotation is ludicrous. Gives us a drone that res’s like ranger pet, or marks a true mes, or disrupts lich form, or can negate enemy guard excessive heals. Please stop fixing kittening elementalists, 3 major heals, endless cc with huge burst and condi dps. They don’t need anymore help. Stahp making charr look like Chinese dragons with mouse tails. Rename unranked pvp queue solo queue and only allow solo queue players. Ranked is both if people want to be foolish. So tired of 5/5 premade enemy ream with 3 allies lvl 10 or lower.

Engineer healing is suck at the moment.

If you don’t run in like a chicken with your head cut off, use smart pulls and don’t miss camps are so easy. FT/RT/GK in zerker gear, no need to kite or glitch walls

Soldier>marauder for solo q.

You simply pop as marauder if you have no support. 1v1 ele with soldiers by being spatially aware of aoe and run away tactic. Engi disengage very effectively, there is no harm in stealth to other side of node and re-engage with ranged. Play to the strengths, you have hard cc if timed properly and can dump dps into a stationary target. Elixir trait, with elixir h is suprisingly hearty, and with s kicker, battle sigil, strength rune = non crits 3k+. Throw some nade conditions in and the oh kitten gear shield for when the enemy finally comes at you. It takes practice, but overall far more effective than relying on paper marauder dps, or praying their cleanse rotation is sloppy.

I have found it makes me monitor my health. I have the habit of getting a little reliant on melandru rune, and getting in the dirty to overcharged’ a necro and end the aoe train. I keep my toolbelt skills on cd, except throw elixir s. If I’m getting low, or my self regulating procs, I’m out. I try to kite: run and dodge away in a beeline on auto elixir, when that runs out immediately pop my manual elixir s, keep running because they chase, they can see you this whole time, and then set up with throw ‘s’ to stealth and fully disengage. Rare ranger that keeps up with all 3 and me running flat out, dodging with energy sigil, and that’s it. Other classes can’t keep target. Heal up, reset with mortars. Sorry for hijack op, but I hope this description helps. Don’t forget gear shield.

Give this a try. Put down the grenade kit. I take this solo into ranked and put down guards, necro, mes 1v1 fairly regularly. I really only struggle against ele, and long bow rangers. I exclusively play engi, and play spvp probably 80% do my play time; I was definitely with you on the frustration scale after updates. Gives this build a try, it’s surprisingly tank and had excellent burst with not awful static condi apply.
