There weren’t any substantial buffs or reworks. (Well, the change between trait lines to spec lines… But that was more of a shuffle of things along with somethings being removed and somethings being made baseline rather than a full-on rework.)

There have been a relatively steady stream of nerfs.

So yes, the thief is weaker than it was 1.5 years ago…. But it’s still stronger than what it will be in 1.5 years.

The last sentence made me chuckle… I also doubt somehow this is STILL not our rock-bottom.

One other thing I can add to this info is that with the major balance update a few months back, all classes but thief were buffed heavily in damage & sustain.

Consequently, thieves, being more or less the same as they were, feel and play much less powerful now.

Hey all,

Im back to GW2 after more than 1.5 years.. Nice to be back ^^
But, I must ask.. whaaats up with the thiefs?
They are mostly a joke in 1vs1 in WvW..
They are no longer competitive! Are thiefs patched to death?
My experience over the last days and the twitch streams that I have seen, make the thief to a joke..

I play myself no thief.. but, why do the devs destroy such a fine class?
I miss the nice old 1vs1 battles against thieves!
Arenanet.. bad job I thought you guys are different from the other MMO Devs..

The Winged foot is the symbol of the Greek God Hermes. Hermes is considered the God of thieves. one of his characteristics was great speed.

The planet mercury and the Roman God Mercury is just a renaming of Hermes and the naming of Mercury the planet was based on its speed in orbit . The Element mercury was also called “quicksilver” due to its fluid nature and how it flowed again referencing Hermes.

Since whole Daredevil “Elite” Specialization is a lazy rework of Acrobatics… maybe it felt lazy and appropriate to rework the swiftness icon for Daredevil to make it a cherry on the top?

That elite skill was probably one of the strongest things ever conceived and the best part it, it didn’t even do any damage directly, now THAT was a powerful thief elite.

I wouldn’t mind reveal being an issue if we had a REAL active stealth mechanism like the one Caithe has for the Elite skill.

It essentially reminds me of Rogue’s in WoW with the “Shadowdance”. Essentially the same mechanic.

Well, one can hope, right? Feels like that’s all thieves do this days We’ve become from the masters of stealth to masters of prayer and hope.

Probably what’ll happen quite soon with all the nerf calls to Vamp Rune, along with the abundance of Reveal mechanics introduced to every freaking class.

With the Herald’s Facet of Nature giving a 50% boon time increase would this make it a total of 44s + 22s = 66 seconds of stealth? i.e. perma stealth with a Herald present?

Stealth is not your typical boon and as such the duration can’t be altered with “boon enhancing” methods.

Trapper thief

Trapper thief is completely unbalanced… Its not impossible to outplay, all it takes is standing/porting on their Black Powders to reveal them.

However, the fact that conditions can be APPLIED (not remain… APPLY) in stealth is broken. Simple fix would be to cause Reveal in any form of condition “application”. Would fix PU condi mesmers, would fix trapper “perma” invis thieves…

Or they can just introduce reveal to all classes and nerf everything into oblivion. I’d say Anet would do the lazy thing, anyone else?

Or they could simply change offensive (applied by enemy) revealed to “spotted” debuff like in WoW. You are still in stealth and profit from all stealth buffs but enemies can see your half visible silhuette.

Poison for example doesn’t completely prevent eles or guards from using their heals, why the hell should revealed applied by enemies deny thieves most of their mechanics? Most stupid design idea i saw since first season Cata/MoP in wow.

Kudos to that design… If revealed is the semi-transparent & targetable state that we’ve had in WoW and other games, that would be a great… I don’t want to say solution but a compromise we can at least LIVE with…

I will just say it here that I feel for every other thief out there trying to make it work on a competitive level. Successful ones are now for 100% the BEST players in gw2 for choosing a class that requires twice the effort and attention to be half effective.

Of all the state we’re “reduced” in… we still found a way and adapted. We thought hey, this ain’t too bad… I can no longer successfully 1v1 but alright, our role has shifted to +1, decapping and stealth resses… Cool, lets roll.

(insert more QQ by ignorant casuals who can’t even fight this simple mechanic)

If you’re in dire need of Spirit Shard, I would assume its worth but otherwise, that +1 level to an alt or simply the convenience is much better value. You can potentially use 10 per week to get a free Black Lion Key as well…

Spirit Shards are also farmable through some mobs (with low rate) so I’d say keep your Tomes for potential use later on

Bliss is absolutely right on all points. Except maybe laptop cooling pad. Ive never needed or used one. I just want to add that I have played GW2 on a lot of computers of varying quality. The component i recommend you focus on is the CPU. GW2 is very CPU heavy. Even on low graphics, Ive had terrible framerates when i had a great graphic card but a mediocre CPU.
When i played with the opposite situation, Great CPU/integrated graphics card, it was a much better experience. I could have medium quality and still have decent framerates in zerg situations.

Thanks I’ve been gaming on laptops since forever… needless to say its been a love/hate relationship. Mostly love when you buy a fresh one and it goes smooth for the first few years and you get to enjoy things like LAN parties with friends and take your gaming anywhere… But there’s always double sides to a coin

For the cooling pad, I have to say if you haven’t tried one yet you definitely should! Good cooling pads reduce heating in between 5-10 degrees Celsius. It really depends on the quality of the pad, the ventilation holes of your laptop. Some laptops have bad “architecture”, ventilation UNDER the laptop instead of back side, and without a cooling pad or structure to elevate the laptop, believe me, it falls short on cooling. Hence getting a pad solves a lot of the problem + cool it additionally.

First things first, I don’t want to be a jerk but its always good to politely fix things before its too late.

Lag is caused by your internet connection and has absolutely nothing to do with your gaming spec. What you describe as “lag” is the frame rates per second (FPS). Higher frame rate gives you smoother gameplay feel and lower…. well we all know how that feels -.-’’

Second, both of those laptops are extremely bad for gaming. I’m sorry if you’re on a low budget, but if you want to game on a laptop, you gotta have a deep pocket — a full one, at that.

Like another user suggested above, there are 3 VERY important things to consider when you expect gaming on a laptop and if you fall short on any of these 3, your gaming experience will become a nightmare.

1) Most important out of 3 — Cooling.

If you’re gaming on a laptop, you want to have a GAMING laptop, which is designed in a way to have larger casing for air ventilation and a lot of isolation to keep the hardwares intact for long years. That being said, not even gaming laptops come close to the cooling efficiency of a Desktop computer simply because you are limited to the confined space of a “portable PC”.

2) CPU (processor)

The times are changing my friend… Back then we used to go ham on the graphics card to have the best performance in MMOs but lately, what defines the perfect MMO experience is the quality of your CPU. You can’t be cheap on processor. You need at least i5 to have decent performance. i7 is great for multitasking if you’re into doing a lot of background tasks along with your gaming (such as browsers, playing music etc…)

3) GPU (graphics card)

Yup, since we’re playing vast combination of animated pixels, we are required to have a great graphics card to run things smooth. Your two options are AMD and nVidia. Both are fine, AMD is like the cheaper version with “less” game support, whereas for elitists, nVidia is the best graphics card out there with much better game optimization. I don’t want to get into debates on this one as I think its all personal preference.

Now once you get these parts handled, optional but recommended components are:

-8 GB RAM
-SSD to install the OS and games in + any HDD of your choice
-Laptop cooling pad (a good aluminium one — like Thermaltake)

These are all I could think of. To be frankly, I didn’t even know a ThinkPad W500 could run GW2… I’m lost for words… Depending on what your idea of “playable” is I suppose it will work. However, for having a healthy gaming experience you want no less than 30 FPS. This is important for both enjoying the game and keeping your eyes healthy.

I would recommend checking articles like: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-budget-gaming-laptop-so-far/ or https://laptopninja.io/finding-the-best-gaming-laptops-under-500-dollars/ to find at least workable gaming laptops. You do NOT want to play games on an integrated graphics i3/i5 4 gb ram machine…

Sorry to be harsh and straight forward, I just want to save you a couple of hundred bucks. You can buy much better desktops for around the same price you pay for a very very bad laptop (for gaming).

Keyboard / Mouse/ Etc. Position

One thing that really changes the ergonomy of a gaming environment is the height of your desk and chair and their position relative to each other.

Basically, you want to sit as low as not having to bend your wrists but as high as avoiding permanent contact with the desk itself.

Second, many pro-league professional players who play for extensive hours (10+), position their keyboards slightly off-set. I’ve actually started doing the same without even knowing its “a thing” because it felt natural to me. Turns out, placing the keyboard straight is actually straining hands. What you do is you slightly shift the left side of the keyboard up. This will cause WASD keys to be slanted and your left hand is completely straight and not strained. Try it — you’ll see what I mean.

Naturally the method above takes a while getting used to cause then you have to slightly shift where every key is and if you type without looking like I do, it causes a little frustration over the upcoming weeks

For the mouse you have to make sure you have the right size. There are certain ways to “grip” the mouse and first you gotta identify which type of grip you are narutally accustomed to. After this, find a mouse for your practical use (MMO mouse if you find you’re running out of comfortable keybinds / regular mouse if you are set with your binds and like ergonomy more than function) and stick to it.

The important thing after setting your gaming gear right is to stick with it and run the mile. You’d be amazed how much you improve with that particular set of gear given you practice long enough. Once you’re comfortable with your setup you’ll notice you can game for longer hours without feeling any pain.

If steal could lock F skills then way to many things would have to be rebalanced with that in mind, including steal itself. So while the idea sound simple enough its pretty unrealistic and impractical to implement.

You dont have sustain but you have stealth + regen with stealth+ condi remove with stealth and best mobility in the game with decent damage. You cant have all =)

But wait i can’t gain stealth because engi and other classes have revealed spells

I can’t regen w/o stealth and frankly that regen is quite low and won#t save me from all the dmg flying around.

Condi removal….yeah about that one…. 3 sec stealth to remove 1 condi…. engis on average apply like 5 different condis…. i have to sit 15 sec in stealth to clear them……

Thieves have best vertical mobility but by no means “best” mobility….

Define decent dmg? Are we talking about 3k backstabs (because this is normal, 7-9k backstabs require might stacks, executioner, vuln stacks and squishy target)?

Have it all? Oh rly? Thief is ONLY class in this game right now that has to trade off dmg for CC, has to trade off defensives for mobility, has to trade off CC for dmg because of initiative and the way stealth works. NO OTHER CLASS DOES. Do you see thieves spamming stuns and doing high dmg and having multiple defensives with ports? NO.
Unless there is some secret build that can do it. Please show me.

It has to be ignorance or just trolling by Babylon.8972… It would be the same if steal disables F1-F5 from engie. And after complaining that this would be op cause loss of survivalbilty and dmg, I would answer: “hey, you can still block, knockback and use your elite… You can’t have it all”

F3: Defensive Toggle

Wow, this is the second post I read from you (I just read the F4 implementation) and I’m again impressed by how much potential it has despite having a trolling attitude to it

Um, I would like to enhance on this idea and propose F3 being a toggle that can’t be used along with F4 (stealth toggle) if those 2 systems are implemented. So if you choose to stealth, you lose your sustain which makes perfect sense.

Furthermore, toggling the F3 skill will continuously drain 10 endurance per 3 seconds to prevent leaving the toggle on, like you suggested. However, how about instead of granting “perma weakness” to everyone else, it could lower the endurance cost of dodge by 50% and cleanse 1 condition per 3 seconds (just like shadow rejuvenation).

This would be far easier to implement, synergizes with Daredevil and evasive thief playstyle, AND greatly benefit the long-forgotten Pistol mainhand builds.

F4: Shadow Realm

Toggle’d stealth is actually the best idea if all our opponents are to be given means of Reveal like this. As much as there’s a trollish air in this post, the suggestion itself is the only one that can salvage such a mess, that is reveal.

The fact that it can be used TWICE with “Kinetic Battery*” is just crazy. You can effectively shut down any stealth effect in the area for 12 seconds.

In high skill-cap tourneys where clutch fights are greatly affected by successful SR-resses, I don’t see how any opponent engi would give up such counterplay. Granted, Elixir X is very very good and you’d have to spec into Scrapper traitline just to utilitize Sneak Gyro (lets not kid ourselves, rest of the gyros are quite subpar — along with the traitline)… but the potential counterplay on a 20 second cooldown is crazy good.

you forgot that our whole trait line is based on stealth…. i wish i had a 900 range, aoe spell on 20 sec CD that prevented mesmers from using shatter and creating clones for 6 sec

Yeah, while you lose your stealth for 6 seconds you still have blind spam, shadowsteps, steal interrupt through stability. Im sorry your glorious stealth got counter but you have still a lot defences and after 6 seconds you can disappear again +15 seconds and full reset the fight.

Yup… After playing Daredevil I concluded stealth would still be the mechanic that keeps Thieves competitive and finally made my “Quip”. Imagine my frustration after the Engineer Elite Specialization reveal…

Granting Reveal to all classes look nothing more than a VERY lazy attempt to help players deal with a class they don’t fully understand. Seeing as no Thief was given ANY help to counter other class mechanics, its just sad…

Reveal is just a very unfortunate, bad game design thrown around to avoid actual effort to address the real problems with the mechanic (not that it has many…).

My suggestion to alternate Thief & Stealth.

I will explain why I’ve graded it this low.

1) The implementation is very kitten a technical perspective. It is possible, don’t get me wrong, but they’d never implement a work-around this complex, affecting multiple classes at once.

2) The idea immediately creates the notion of difference between classes. Almost as if “classism” Don’t tell me you don’t already see posts on forum/reddit saying how thieves have real stealth while mesmers or other classes have the “useless” stealth. It will affect the community negatively.

3) The idea solves the problem for only 1 weapon set. I especially don’t like how you’ve mentioned “Ghost Stealth” will be attained through “blasts – finishers” which immediately says go D/P or go home. You know stacking stealth through Shortbow is never a thing unless out of combat.

4) After playing for so many years without any movement speed restriction in stealth I really don’t want to go back to “WoW-style stealth” where you’re punished for being invisible.


Overall, good & constructive effort to solve the reveal problem, but unfortunately, not enough in my humble opinion.

The only suggestion I can have for the whole reveal fiasco is to reduce the reveal to 2-3 seconds. 6 is incredibly long as it is. Ripping off stealth is already a huge counterplay, and not letting them gain for another 6 seconds is just ridiculous.

I would also like to see such reveals on a much longer cooldowns (60 + seconds) considering our utility stealth skills are on a relatively long cooldown and it wouldn’t be fair if they could counter it every single time we use one.

I already believe our “initiative-generated stealths” SHOULDN’T be countered that easily. We’re literally spending ~10 initiative to keep ourselves stealthed for 5-6 seconds. We trade our resource of damage/evade/debuffs (anything that initiative grants us) for stealthing ourselves.

I don’t know…. they are really fudging up Thief boys… I feel cheated and sad for investing this much time on a class that lingers on the border of being completely unplayable – unfun.

Any mention of Reveals being too kitten Thieves and exclusively Thieves (’cause other classes who rely on stealth have tons of other mechanics to sustain fights), result in a lot of comments from people like:

“LOL, l2p. Thieves are perma-stealthing forever, noob…”

Getting downvoted to oblivion by Engineers on reddit specilization post xD Looks to me that Toolbelt reveal is going to get nerfed and they know it.

My biggest concern is every class getting a Reveal eventually. In that case it will be absoutely insane to keep up with it as a stealth-based thief.

Getting this as well and its starting to become unplayable.

Every time i load a new map my graphic settings change, sometimes in WvW they will just randomly change in the middle of a fight which means my FPS drops a fair bit.

Something else thats bugging me is the fact i get the 3-5second screen freeze everytime i go underwater. As a WvW player you are required to go under water a fair bit in the borderlands especially in bay.

I think its pretty kitten that the dev team havent even acknowledged this bug yet. Surely it doesnt take long for them to make a post saying they are looking into it.

+1. I’m not greatly impacted by the settings changing, although I agree its an annoyance. However, underwater freezes are VERY important and should be fixed ASAP.

In WvW gameplay its causing huge problems. I know you guys realized underwater fights won’t be a thing and probably look into ways to fix that system but forcing people to avoid waters completely is NOT the way to do it :P

GW1 = random arenas (only solo queues) + team arenas (premade vs premade)
This system was clearly a success.

GW2 = all together in one queue 4Head

Why you did not learn anything from you success? Why you have to redesign everything?

HOWEVER, our impact to the outcome of matches is VERY high and your ego of wanting to “be the knight and not the squire” is thoroughly irrelevant. If you don’t like what we do best, you’re looking at a blissful reroll.

I personally enjoy having that much “invisible” impact on my shoulders.

Well this has got to be a joke. I mean…. you even…. what?? And the fact that you complain the class is broken but you want to nerf it further? Is this real life?

You know, instead of calling a nerf for the daze effect, you could by all means complain about “auto-defense” trigger skills that make some classes kittenedly OP?

Out of curiosity. How do you determine if someone is macroing? I mean I know its a thing, but how do you know this? Or do you just suspect?

Pretty much if a guy is doing dodge jump all the time which in combat is impossible to do it every single time.

So let’s say, you 1v1 someone and he’s using dodge jump often(have energy sigil+vigor) then he’s using a macro with 90% chance – there can be someone to do 5 in a row luckily, but doing 8~12 is pretty much impossible and repeating it in every combat.

Hence, anet should fix that dodge jump thing.

Yes because we should all be considered doing illegal actions when we do something others can not do. Spouting utter nonsense.

You can guest my server and watch me dodge jump 100% any time using 2 keybinds and nothing more. Just because you haven’t practiced and put in the hours to gain a slight benefit doesn’t automatically make everyone who did susceptible of “macroing”.

Besides I hope Anet would focus their attention on fixing things that matter and not things that are used as an excuse to call nerf. Not to mention I recall a podcast where its been acknowledged and not going to be dealt with cause its a niche practice thats quite harmless and slightly beneficial.
