Maybe this is Stockholm syndrome, but I’ve found myself rather endeared to the character the writers have come up with. I think, especially tomorrow, we’ll see that she’s not so much a bad person as a misled one. Admittedly, she may be psychotic without the entity’s influence as well.
Regardless, there are a lot of criticisms of Scarlet being a Mary Sue and they are justified, but she also represents a more complex character and story as will be apparent tomorrow.
It could also be that I am fond of characters that are so independent and driven. She also has a funny face, which I find more interesting and entertaining.
I was just at Maw in FOTM and was kicked from the party when it was at <25% health. It wasn’t because of anything I did so I presume it was so they could sell my spot.
This really sucks. I didn’t take a screenshot of them so I don’t know their names. What can I do? What can be done to put an end to this?
Please don’t post walls of text. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
Seriously though, it’s far easier and more productive to discuss one thing or a few things at a time than to read your entire reworking of the class. In fact, you’re less likely to get your ideas noticed because you’re posting a wall of text.
Honest question, does longbow warrior not fit the archer-class that some people are looking for?
Here’s a goal for the devs: make the ranger class something that you would want to main.
Besides Hrouda (RIP in piece) I don’t think any of the Devs main ranger. If they do, I’d love to know and for them to be a voice for us.
Correction : “If they do out of PvP, I’d love to know and for them to be a voice for us”
:p
Yes indeedy. I do pretty fine on my shout-regen Ranger and everyone knows about spirit ranger. Not sure how BM bunker is these days, but regardless, meaningful changes to Ranger need to come outside of those specific builds. I don’t want to be provided with a short list of possible builds, I want the openness to develop my own with my own playstyle.
When I saw Izzy Cartwright’s ranger video where he was just echoing Brazil’s dungeon build, it was kind of tragic. I was hoping he would offer the kind of insight and ideas that would come from a dev that actually plays ranger as their main.
On a different note: The class really isn’t as catastrophically disastrous as some of these people will have you believe. Most Rangers seem unwilling to experiment and discover the versatility that the class offers. However, 18 months later and (at least what seems like) just two meaningful patches – Aquaman, and Incredible Hulk pet – it’s getting really frustrating.
Even if this pet responsiveness patch is going to be awesome, we won’t even see it for a month or two, which will still leave parts of the class that really need attention.
I’m coining the phrase ‘trickle-down balancing’ to describe the state of this profession. (referring to the power creep discussion going on in the CDI)

No responses from anet in over 24 hours. The only responses we got are from Allie who in the grand scheme of things is unimportant (no offense and all) since she isnt the one thats going to be making the changes nor is she one of the designers of the class.
Would love for someone else who can actually answer some of the questions we have about the direction of the class since unfortunately Allie isnt in a potion to do so since that isnt her job.
The tread isnt going anywhere atm.
That’s not fair. People are providing a rather hostile environment so that Allie has to watch what she says.
Look what happened when Allie did reply: People fixated on one thing and prattled on and on about permastowing pet in favor of aspects. Now they’re fixating on her usage of “power creep”.
There are certain people here that are so fixated on their own personal goals for the class that they aren’t willing to have a proper discussion and are also preventing one.
I don’t blame Allie for not replying because whenever she does we essentially attack her without having an actual discussion. She’s also the liaison between us and the devs and unfairly takes a lot of the brunt.
That being said, this can’t be a discussion if the devs don’t ask us for feedback on the specific things they’re looking for. It’s too one-way (something more like the Fractals CDI would be wonderful). Some transparency with regards to their short-term goals for the class and what they would like to prioritize would be much appreciated. Unfortunately, I’m sure they have a lot of work themselves and there’s a ton of pages to read through here.
(I have to admit, I am also feeling disappointed. People became excited because we thought Ranger might get some much needed love, but I think Prysin is right about the devs having lost enthusiasm for this thread. This is most likely going to be as underwhelming as the underwater-buffs-patch.)
Soooo when is this thing going to start?
The big pet changes I’m going to be gunning hardest for in this upcoming CDI discussion are massive improvements in attack accuracy. The first two are the primary changes I want to see.
“10 second cooldown Long-range distance closer skill added to all melee pets.” (Anti-kiting utility, just as any melee character has to have to succeed in this game.) Ie. a charge covering approximately the same range as the greatsword 3 swoop skill.
“200 unit range pounce/teleport effect added to the auto attack on melee pets to include a that pulls them into the closest range of the enemy character model center” (This while functioning as a partial distance closer is mainly to help quell the “Stop to attack at maximum range” issue that make the pets so susceptible to side-steps. You shouldn’t be able to dodge so many pet attacks just by means of holding down your a,d keys for half a second.) This attack would effectively pull them straight into absolute point blank range before their auto attack goes off, rather than having them auto attack from the maximum possible range.
I will hammering for BOTH to be added, not one or the other. Because again, they each answer to different issues. The first one enables pets to deal with the kiting eles, mesmers, (ironically rangers), bow spam warriors and other challenges they face where distance creator skills are frequently used in the same way any melee build character has skills to counter these. This is NOT overpowering them, it’s simply equipping them with the tools to do a job they are unfairly expected to accomplish at the current time.
The auto-attack pounce is because I perceive there will probably be some technical issues cited defending a potential inability to “make pets able to move and attack simultaneously”. If this is technically unfeasible with the animations system/massive AI overhaul that takes months… then this can be added in as little as one month and function as a reach around to enable melee pets to effectively land more hits.
The two others I want to see happen:
Cleaving effect added to ALL melee pets. I know some rangers are going to whine about this making the drake seem less special, but this is one of the effects that play a key role in making pets already highly telegraphed and predictable attacks less vulnerable to players mindlessly smash a,d keys while auto attacking. Other classes get a lot of mileage out of their auto attacks, in time we got ours. Since our pet plays a roll in that, it needs to contribute much more than it currently does.
Massive increase in projectile speed of all ranged pet’s attacks. These skills already have a very highly telegraphed build up, medium-slow projectile speed is simply unfeasible.
*Please note that I’d still like to see pets/pet to ranger damage ratios as an optional, rather than a forced decision if possible. These are merely suggestions to make pets viable and contribute the damage that they are already expected to contribute but fail to do so due to mechanical issues. *
I’ve criticized a lot of other ideas as OP and I think these are a tad strong, but I really hope the devs read this because those are some really good ideas.
bringing back awards cheapens everything :(

Well, you know it is nice to bring things back once in a while because there are some people like me that may have been around since the 3 day head start, but I had to miss 7 months worth of content because I was away. My wife did my dailies for me while I was gone and that was it.
When I got home and she realized there were things that were missed that I thought were cool she felt guilty. I only asked her to do my dailies while I was away.
Bringing back some items actually makes A-Net look even better in the eyes of those that have to deploy for months on end and can’t enjoy the content updates. We have the wiki to fill in the story gaps, but to get our hands on something that is only account bound and can’t be bought is AWESOME.
You have a nice wife. Tell her that.
You could just use hunter’s shot’s 3s stealth on hit, switch to gs and maul that way.
Invites sent.

Tried to send an invite, but too many guilds.
Sorry, could you try now?

Shortbow
(…)
I like your shortbow suggestions, though personally I would like a longer daze on Concussion Shot. And because of why I said they can’t increase range on longbow, I don’t think they’ll change range on shortbow.
1) Slash > Slice > Powerstab
Sweeping Tail A wide cleaving sweeper attack with the greatsword, launching all nearby foes away from you.
I think that would be annoying because it would constantly interrupt the autoattack to chase after your target again.
3) Swoop > renamed to Eagle Strike
Reduce Range to 900,
Noooo! I like using swoop as both a gap closer (which I think every class has access to and this is currently our best one) and to travel around faster.
Predatory Bond Shout
Lets your Pet charge at you foe crippling it. You Pet will gain Predatory Bond also, letting its next 3 Attacks heal you.
This has potential, but ideally I’d like it to be a skill you could manually activate on canines which would reallllly help with healing yourself in downed state before someone can use their finisher.
[/quote]
Dagger
4) Stalker’s Strike
Change it into gaining Stealth on hit and let you perform within the Stealth automatically a retreating Backwards Jump to also evade attacks this way.
I like the idea of (a very short) stealth but I think the evading backwards would make it too strong. Then this is too much like the mobility that only a thief should have.
5) *Crippling Talon > renamed into Merciless Talon
Cripples, Torments and Poisons foes now.
The combination of cripple and torment would make this very strong. I like it, but I don’t think the devs would.
Sword
1) Slash > Kick > Pounce > Pounce changed into Frozen Soil
Change Pounce from a Leap into an Attack that deals Chill, like Frozen Soil adding to it an effect, that causes an AoE in which downed enemies can’t be healed for some time.
a) That would make us the only class that could negate down state and for several reasons, I think it’s unrealistic to expect this to happen.
b) PvE’ers don’t like how the weapon roots you, but in PvP and WvW pounce is so important and useful. It gives us a unique and strong style so I would rather keep that.
2) Hornet Sting
Energizing Wind
You and your nearby Allies gain Vigor and Regeneration for a short time.
Maybe just vigor and not regeneration, but I think the skill is fine as it is right now.
3)
*Serpent’s Quickness
When used right after Serpent’s Strike, the next incoming attack will be blocked, you gain Haste and the foe will be made vulnerable.
Yeah, that’s basically giving us aegis in addition to haste and giving vulnerability. It’s too much, maybe just one of those.
Torch
Flame Trap gets removed as Utility therefore.
Wat. No way. That means that you can’t have a fire field without using a torch. Right now, you could use warhorn instead of torch and give AoE might. Not to mention that traps are a whole section of our utility skills and are not meant to be weapon skills.
Yeah, Orpheal, some of your suggestions are ridiculously OP. I like some of them, but I’m going to point out the ones I either disagree with or which you should change because they won’t be given serious consideration.
1) Long Range Shot.
Increase its Range to 1500,
Is the enemy in a range, that is 0-500, the Auto Attack changes into Point Blank Shot and will launch the Enemy with a range of 600 away.
I believe they said that they needed to reduce it from 1500 to 1200 due to system-side issues at that range so don’t expect that to return. Point Blank Shot can’t be in auto-attack because there are too many situations where that’s a detriment. People already hate rangers for using point blank shot carelessly and pushing mobs out of aoe.
3) Hunter’s Shot
Completely change the effect.
Hunter’s Shot should deal Torment to foes with increased Stacks, so longer the range is.
I like the idea of giving the pet retaliation, but the current stealth-on-hit is really useful, especially since we have little access to stealth. I think Chap also said that one idea was that it would give you time to successfully use barrage (or something else). The previous changes to our weapon skills were meant to give us more means of achieving strategy which is paramount – this throws that away in favor of raw damage, which is a problem in this game that they’re already trying to fix.
4) Point Blank Shot > changed to Read the Wind
Gain Swiftness and automatically dodge the next incoming hits, while you perform this Skill. The next 3 Attack Shots after RtW will fly 2x faster and are unblockable also.
I strongly disagree with the unblockable part. Ranger needs buffing, but not at the expense of being unstoppable by other classes.
5) Barrage
Increase its power and reduce its Cooldown to make it equal to Ice Storm from the Elementalist’s Frost Bow
So raising the maximum hits from 12 to 20 and reducing the Cooldown from 30 to 20.
Make it a charge skill, whose Radius becomes bigger, when charged for approx 2 seconds before firing off the arrows.
I would like its power to be increased, but I don’t think it would ever be as strong as Frost Bow. Elementalist conjure weapons give power bonus on top of the bonus from your weapon set – this is why they have limited usage and time. This would also kitten off a lot of elementalists as it’s like stealing their thunder.
Stupid question, but what exactly does a “responsiveness pass” mean? I’ve never seen that kind of phrasing before.
Ranger:
Ranger pets are receiving a responsiveness pass and will be much easier to command. For example: Activating your F2 skill will now break your pet out of its current action in order to execute that ability.
So here’s the deal. It’s not unreasonable to want to be able to go back and watch cut scenes and do instanced portions of the LS, like when the player enters the tower of nightmares.
You can’t allow people to play through entire updates though. I agree with what NYG said above, that the aim of the Living Story is to feel like a LIVING story. Everything that changes in the world is made coherent through the narrative.
But imagine if people could just go back and repeat the attack on Southsun or aiding the refugees during the Molten Alliance story: eventually you get fewer and fewer people doing the current living story. I think they want you to try to keep up with what’s going on with the living story in the present because other players playing with you is part of the game they’re selling.
Well there are bad players of every class, but brown bear + bow ranger is so iconic that maybe that’s just the ones you’re noticing more readily. Confirmation bias or something.
Yeah, I thought the point of the devs confirming that her lair would still be there was that you could still use your cyphers. Instead, there are just pages from her journal in there. I don’t think it’s unfair to say that that was misleading (and probably due to bad internal communication).
Alas.
I’m really excited for this, but I won’t be able to be on at the usual times that the patch hits. Will it be like when Mad King Thorn came out of the lion statue where the cutscene repeats every so often? Will I log in to an already destroyed LA? Is it possible that it will be instanced?
I was really looking forward to standing on the lion statue as everything crumbles around me.
1. Ranger
Something needs to change about the AI. The pet positioning itself behind the mob was a good start and the toughness boost certainly helps, but as it is now, there’s little synchronicity between the ranger and his/her pet. It’s incredibly frustrating to be in the middle of a fight and you try activating F2 only to get no response – or worse, F2 goes on cooldown without doing anything.
Improvement to trait lines might be a way to get people to use spirits in PvE because as it is right now, that’s an element of the class that has little to no utilization outside of sPvP. (I’m not counting frost spirit which is utilized for the one single build that everyone runs around with.
I watched Isaiah Cartwright’s video on the ranger hoping to see some suggestions on how to best use the class…only to watch the same build that brazil from DnT has made popular.
Another blast finisher would be most welcome. GS Maul could be a possibility.

When I get stunned or immobilized, all the other stun breakers break the stun right away, but with lightning reflexes I stay stuck there for 1-2 secs before I’m free. Anyone else?
. . . on a semi-related note? Who is voicing Scarlet Briar?
Tara Strong
She voices Bubbles, Batgirl, the asura announcer in the pavillion, and now Scarlet. Is there something this woman can’t do?
Hi, guys! Would you please give me some suggestions on how to take on deadeye with 5 gambits? I was thinking of going for trap ranger build with carrion armor and rabid weps/trinkets.
I think the whole conversation method Anet chose to go with was off here. Putting the characters of the dialogues in front of boring 2D backgrounds with little to no emotion-expressing body language is a particularly bad idea for supposedly highly stressed scenes like a battle or a tearful goodbye or whatever. When you have no well-paced animation, writing that doesnt feel forced, and no sense of the background events (like said battle), all you have left is what you hear. And Mira didnt provide a good enough performance to take our attention away from these other failings.
Well said. I like the direction they went with cutscenes with Dragonbash onwards. I think the development/animation team would really benefit from developing a tool like Source Filmmaker. It would not only result in better cutscenes with less development time (and thus, a more engaged player body), but also allow players to make movies as well. This would really increase the awareness of Guild Wars 2 and put more money in NCSoft’s pocket.
I realize that they’ve already got a lot on their plate, but I hope someone sees this and is willing to discuss it.
The voice acting for Deputy Mira was probably the worst I’ve heard in the entire game. I don’t think it’s the script’s fault or even that it’s difficult to convey emotion only through voice – it was bad on a whole different level.
She sounds so emotionless and completely breaks the illusion of acting. Just listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=7-xxpulMVis&t=1158
Secondly, I’ve only done Order of Whispers’s and Durmand Priory’s “Battle for Claw Island”, but the part where Tybalt/Sieran decide to sacrifice themselves seems awfully contrived. I get that the different plot lines needed to converge, but just killing them off like that was too abrupt and disappointing.
First of all, the player has to spend some time fighting the risen there and it becomes obvious that there are too many for one person fighting even in just one cluster of the many in the courtyard. So this means that one person choosing to try to hold back ALL of the risen in the courtyard seems very futile – you’d only hold them back for a few seconds before they overwhelm you, thus making the sacrifice for naught.
Secondly, why not send Deputy Mira to die then? She previously states that it’s every Lionguard’s duty to die protecting their city if that’s what it takes. Well, that’s what it takes. She’s already crippled and slowing everyone down. Plus, like I mentioned, her voice acting is atrocious!
I liked Tybalt and Sieran much more.
Lastly, I must concede that voice acting is no easy occupation and takes much skill and talent. That being said, Mira’s dialogue should never have been allowed to make it to the final cut. It’s not so bad that only someone with experience can notice it….it’s very overt.

The ‘Living Story’ storyline is disjointed and incomprehensible. It lacks focus and a clear plot theme. It seems to be completely unrelated to the game’s core content. It seems as if the Living Story writers are attempting to create a virtual, living novel. However, the way a story is conveyed in a novel does not translate well to a mmorpg. By the time the in-game plot is fully revealed, the players will have forgotten most of it and will lose interest.
Many of the living story characters are unremarkable and entirely forgettable. I wasn’t here for the first appearance of Canach and his second appearance did nothing to explain anything surrounding the character, whatsoever. Canach was just some cold, random plot mechanic, akin to the ‘swing away’ Louisville Slugger as was presented in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2002 film ‘Signs’ .
Evon Gnashwho?
Ellen Kiel…oh, that crazy, angry woman from Southsun?
Marjory…evil Mae West?!?! Kitana from Mortal Kombat? Who knows and who cares? She is generic as all get-out.
Lord Kaswhat? Lady Farsomething? Did they even do anything in Southsun?
I don’t like how the entire story isn’t told, exclusively, in-game. I don’t do 3rd party websites, digital short stories or book store novels. I want the entire story to be conveyed entirely in-game. If you want Ree Soesbee to write novels, that’s fine. But make those novels available and readable, in-game.Dailies…I hate dailies. I’ve hated dailies since Netherwing Ledge all those years ago. Dailies do nothing to add immersion and seem to be more of a mechanic to lead players out into a game world…a game world they would have no need to venture into otherwise.
Idk, those are just a few of my complaints.
I agree about Canach, he was a minor character who didn’t stand out and was very forgettable.
If people don’t know about Evon Gnashblade, it’s from not exploring. Tons of people go to the LA TP, and see him there.
Ellen Kiel has been in the story consistently and there wasn’t anything forgettable about her.
They did a fantastic job with Marjory’s film noir character and I’m sure people still remember her.
People that have done the human plotline would know Kasmir and Faren. I think the introduction on Southsun for those that didn’t know was acceptable. I think if you weren’t just rushing through for achievements, you would know who they are.
I strongly disagree with the ire over the short stories. They’re really well written and convey content in a way that would not be nearly as good in-game. What you’re asking for would be long, resource-intensive cutscenes. I am not alone in applauding the short story work, but I would concede that it would be nice if we got an in-game email letting us know that a story was up or even making it possible to read through the game.
I do not want to be spoon-fed stories and content. The same people asking for that are demonstrating such short attention span that they would quickly get bored if they got what they’re asking for.
What the kitten are honor tokens? Now you’re just making things up. There are just enough currencies for the different reward systems out there and it’s perfectly fine. This means that people have different ways of getting the same stuff. If you don’t have a ton of gold, but you play WvW, you can substitute Badges of Honor for ascended accessories. I’ll admit that it’s important that they don’t get carried away with currency systems, but I think the current brouhaha is melodramatic.
I have to agree that the Dailies are currently somewhat grindy, but often, you will fulfill the dailies just by playing the game. If people like grinding, then they can do that as well. I’m not sure how to improve this and I’m eager to see some suggestions.
tl;dr: ANet, I’ll be patient, bring the Living Story together and make it good. Don’t spoonfeed us content, keep publishing short stories, but let us know about them and make them accessible in the game in an immersive way.
Are you hitting the nail every time? No. But you’re getting close and here’s one player that appreciates the continuous stream of fun. Perhaps try to provide a broader variety of content so the people that want to grind can do so, but casual players can get something just as fulfilling.
You write very level-headedly. I think the painfully cynical tone is due to some disappointment that’s been festering for a long time, according to your post history. I’m sorry that you feel this way and I do agree with you on some points, particularly in the unfriendliness towards casual players. But I think they are offering some even mix of content that even casual players can enjoy such as with the queen’s gauntlet matches.
I think you have unfair expectations and some of your criticisms are undue though. I too would love it if the balloon ride was more vista-like like the elevators at the grove, but I honestly wasn’t expecting much. I was rather impressed with the size and design of the balloon stations. The currency thing is just sensible…it’s a way to offer rewards based on the content for that event that you can exchange for other things. They’ve also got black lion weapon tickets to let you get weapons from past events that you missed (although the RNG and ridiculous cost of the skins needs to be addressed. It would cost you something like $50+ in gems to get enough ticket scraps.)
I also don’t give much credence to your friend’s assessment after one hour. He obviously left out of dissatisfaction and I would not expect him to be overwhelmed after a short peek. I took a break for a few months, I missed SAB, but when I came back I found the game really fun to jump back into. Maybe you should consider that.
Best.
This has happened to me thrice in two days. Twice in two different dungeons and again while mapping. The game thinks I’m in combat even when there are no mobs around. My only option is get far out of range of where I was. I’m not even sure if this is a ranger problem. I’ve tried everything – switching pets, putting pet on passive, switching weapons, messing with possible culprit skills, etc.
I’ve never experienced this before.
You did not read my post properly. It is not an option. It is not possible without touching core systems. Which will have other consequences. An MMO is a very complex thing.
So what your telling us is: Removing a key feature from the personal bank doesn’t touch any core systems, but adding a completely new feature while leaving the bank as is would require you to alter core systems.
I may not be a programmer, but something about that statement just seems backwards to me.
He’s not a programmer either. He has no idea how the digital cogs work. In the future, he should refrain from posting comments, in regards to topics outside of his own area of expertise.
Take your own advice then. You, and others, do not know the coding practices or how business is run within Arena-net. It’s not your area of expertise on how to run an MMO.
I’m credited on 20+ video games from ‘Wing Commander’ to ‘Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga’ ….but yeah, I’ve never produced a mmo before. My brother is working on that one. You may have heard of it. It’s called ‘Star Citizen’ .
Nope, never heard of it.
Also, judging by your posting you are a true negative Nancy. It makes it hard to take you seriously when you do have a legitimate complaint.

It keeps them from attacking your crystal carriers and keeps them from going and getting crystals also.
Interesting. I wonder if the demand for these can act as a makeshift poll.
If so, then Kiel is winning. Keep it real, vote for Kiel!
So, I picked up one of the Rare Evon Buttons off the TP, just to see what they did, since Google failed to tell me, and it just seems to be a Permabutton, which is pretty darn cool.
My question is, where do they come from? Is it the Gemstore Bundle?
I got a permanent Kiel badge out of a Aspect Arena chest. I’m curious if I’ll be able to still use it after the event. For example, if Evon wins, then I’ll walk around with my Kiel badge, obstinate in my choice.
I know for a fact that this guy has a coding issue, and reads your moves before the round.
FACT: There was a time when I purposely took a drink (juice) instead of belching, and he drank water, when every other time I would belch and he drinks (juice). Begin the “No you were just unlucky all those other rounds, and that 1 round was the only time you could’ve beaten him” posts.
FACT: Several of my guildies were able to beat him without rejuv boosters, and when I try to beat him WITH rejuv booster, he wins…? how does that make sense? try again anet and stop trolling us.
That being said, I was able to beat him after approx. 80 times, and it had nothing to do with me belching his water. When it came down to our last drinks, he had 0%, as did I, and i had a belch and he just drank juice (makes complete sense…? no, no it doesn’t)
I’ve also noticed that he cuts off my strategies. If I decide that his belch is timed with my water so i wait a turn before drinking, only then does he use belch. He’s definitely reading your moves.
For anyone else having trouble, I was finally able to beat him after a few stubborn hours.
Keep your HP up as much as possible.
Each time you start, he has a different strategy/pattern. If it’s not looking good, forfeit and try for another one. The one where he belches first was good for me so that I could predict them better.
Belch first, then drink water during his forced drinking. Bluff always, and drink water when you can.
The rest is luck.
This is really unfun. There are some patterns, I admit, but the mechanics are really frustrating and circumvent challenging to go into just not being fun. Even with strategy, so much just relies on luck. He sometimes uses belch as soon as it’s ready and sometimes he waits until you’re drinking water. Not to mention, the ridiculous amount of damage you take compared to him. It doesn’t even matter that he doesn’t bluff at all because juice doesn’t damage him that much anyway.
This is my problem exactly. I’ve been going through weapon galleries trying to decide, but it’s annoying to have to keep that chest bouncing there.
The guys in the ranger forum like to think the class is used a scapegoat to trample all over by anet so other classes feel better – some people actually believe that.
It’s not that bad. It’s quite playable and while there are issues with the class that I would like to see addressed, they never keep me from being able to play what I want to play. There are a few options for how you want to play (though something like spirit ranger is good in spvp, but horrible in pve. Trap ranger is still viable though.)
DPS-wise, anet recently nerfed pets’ damage significantly, but I haven’t noticed much difference when I’m playing. Some skills got buffed as well and there’s more to come…it’s just a matter of how long it will take.
I don’t really play WvW, but I’ve heard that beastmaster ranger, which was the reason for the nerfs, is actually stronger in WvW and PvP.
Shortbow should have shorter range than Longbow. If the most range they can give longbow is 1200 (plus eagle eye), then it makes sense. He said that they brought it down to the same range as thief’s and that they didn’t want the shortbow to overshadow the longbow. This is important – You have to have pros and cons with weapon choice. The appeal of the shortbow is its fast fire-rate, people who just care about burst and condi would obviously choose shortbow. It needs to have a down side too. The point is to encourage different weapon choices for different purposes.
I think this qq’ing will cease once they improve longbow’s skills so that it’s a serious choice between the two.
Where can we get a recap of the episode.
Yes, we care about the forums.
We also care about all the classes equally.
It’s strange, because the different treatment between classes is evident (someone said thief?).
It’s also clear that you don’t read the forums (ex: since day one all ranger complain about the lb skill and the pet ability to hit moving target, and after a year nothing has changed) and that you don’t test your patchs.
Give credit where credit is due. There were many threads asking specifically for longbow to get 15% arrow speed and they not only granted that but gave extra damage as well. With regards to the pet, several updates ago they made it so pets maneuver behind the mob whenever possible and gave pets hp and toughness buffs. I was feeling optimistic then, before they took two steps back by declawing pets.
To the devs: I’m sure you play the game too. When was the last time you saw a ranger running with spirits? Maybe some specific build in spvp, but never in PvE or WvW. You’ve set up so many options for the class, but you’re not making any of them appealing. I don’t want OP damage – I want to have fun, I want versatility. When I made a thief after playing ranger since launch, I was surprised at how fun the class was. At how many different skill options and combinations were possible. Please don’t let this class become cookie-cutter.

On the one hand, I’m glad that the female medium armor doesn’t use the redundant trenchcoat style we’ve all seen a hundred times. On the other hand, it looks awfully ugly to me compared to the heavy and light sets.
In particular, I don’t like how the hat makes you look like you’re bald underneath; while the gloves look great and the boots are okay, the coat looks completely nonsensical and barely steampunk. I’m curious what it’s based on because it looks like you have fairy wings jutting out from your hips.
I would like the person or persons making the call on armor styles to know that adventurer classes would look just as adventurous and maybe even more so if they didn’t wear a coat. In fact, I think in the vast majority of media with adventurers, coats are the exception rather than the rule. It’s nice to have a couple or a few styles that give a nod to the duster-wearing, gun-toting, wild-west adventurer – but there are other styles…
I plan on buying krytan armor just so I can have the jerkin. I just wish they would make armor more akin to that (i.e. blouses, jackets, anything but coats. Female adventurers are still female and some flattering (not naked or even skimpy) clothes would be much appreciated.
What a bunch of crybabies…
>Insect Swarm: This skill can no longer fire behind the drake.
Wtf? Why not? Drakes take so long to cast their attack that marsh drake was the only one that could actually land a hit. They act like this made it so OP.
I feel like Rangers have been qq’ing and kitten-talking to the devs for so long that someone decided to get revenge.
It’s rather funny. After months of complaining that pets died too fast, they increase pet health and toughness (mostly big pets like drakes and bears). Then they decide that they made pets too strong so what do they do? They make them worse than they were before.
When everyone else was freaking out and complaining, I stayed faithful and decided that what I cared more than pets being OP is build diversity and gave anet the benefit of the doubt. I see now that I was wrong. Three steps forward, two steps back.
She seems to target people who are farthest from the rest of the group so stick together.
:S Otherwise, you may just need to retrait. If a glass cannon ranger went in there and kept dying, then obviously he needs to change his build.
Fantastic dungeon! As if it was a nod to the challenging parts of Molten Facility. That was definitely some of the most fun I’ve had in the game. So pat yourself on the back, team that worked on this dungeon. You’re all the kittens.
I’m not really understanding if pets were nerfed because “omg op spvp BM ranger”, why in pve too? Clearly with the patch notes for mesmers they can differentiate the two. I can’t imagine why on earth we needed a pve pet nerkitten
plit the hit point values of clones and phantasms by game type:
Increased the phantasm base hit points by 55% in PvP and WvW.
Increased the phantasm base hit points by 270% in PvE.
Decreased the clone base hit points by 25% in PvP and WvW.
Increased the clone base hit points by 28% in PvE.
Holy crap, you’re right. This makes no sense then. My pets were by no means OP in PvE. We’ll never get an explanation for this so I’m just going to sit here and sulk.

I mean… absolutely destroy the build.
Hell, It would absolutely break most ranger specs in general because i’m not seeing a massive damage increase across the board to rangers to make up for it.
That was the point. In a recent SOAC episode, two of the devs confirmed that BM ranger was OP. They said something like they didn’t want people to afk while their pet did massive damage.
If new viable builds come out of this, I think the BM ranger nerf is worth it.
That being said…My pet is barely worth keeping alive in PvE as it is without losing damage.
They didn’t lie.
Never have they stated that you have a big chance to get the tickets from the Rich boxes. They have only ever said that there is a BIGGER chance to get it from there than from the Regular ones.
>Rich Dragon Coffers contain all the same items as the Dragon Coffers* *that drop >commonly from Dragon Bash enemies, but have better chances at rare items.
Actually, notice how they edited the patch notes here – I didn’t add those *’s. It originally plainly implied that rich dragon coffers had a 100% chance of a jade weapon ticket. That was poor communication so let’s not let all the brouhaha distract from the fact that there is real reason to be upset with Anet over miscommunication and people’s wasted money.
It’s not ideal, but they told it through short stories. I think this form allowed for more interesting narration, but it’s also true that not everyone keeps up with this.
