I believe that if profanity is against the code of conduct, the game developers should not include an option to disable profanity filtering. It’s extremely misleading.

True story: I once played a game where the word “assassinate” was filtered to “buttbuttinate”. Hilarious, but annoying. Sometimes the filter catches things it’s not meant to, and people turn it off. Just apply a little Wheaton’s Law to your conversation in public areas.

This is why they don’t give you warnings. They’re not interested in arguing with you about it – and since you’ve spent several posts arguing about why you shouldn’t have gotten a suspension for it with people that can’t even do a thing about it, I can’t imagine you’d listen to a “Don’t say that word again please.”

But maybe I’m wrong. So … don’t say that word again, please, or use another slur of any kind to refer to your opponents.

I totally agree. I was banned and got no evidence of it (makes 0 sense to me that you give someone a 3 day ban and don’t provide the evidence), I think they should spend less time worrying about a few little swear words and try to fix the broken state of the game.

False dichotomy, mate. Moderators are not (necessarily) programmers. It’s never a question of one or the other; people have different jobs to do at the same time.

If you’ve seen some of the ridiculous arguments people put up about why their name choice doesn’t violate the rules, you can probably figure out why they don’t waste their time telling people “you were banned for saying X, Y, and Z”. Probably 90% of the people getting that message would say “Well but X really stood for this totally innocent thing and therefore you’re wrong!” I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve had this conversation on various games:

Random person: asdhfgdfgakshdfk (repeat 50 times flooding the chat)
Me: Please don’t spam, it’s against the rules.
Random person: I’m not spamming because (insert long stupid reason here) and ur not a mod!11!

I’m just telling them the rule and they want to argue about it. Like I’m the one that needs to be convinced.

On another note, I have played a game that allows players to chat-mute other players temporarily. The way it worked was this: you had to have an account of a certain age (I think 3 months), and you had to be a certain rank in a guild of a certain standing and age. This was to prevent players from making a new account (FTP game) and spamming shuns on other people. If one player shunned you, you’d be muted for two minutes. If multiple people shunned you, the time would increase. If you shunned anyone for ANY reason other than a chat violation in a public space, you would lose the privilege, and your entire guild could also lose the ability to shun.

This was a much smaller game than GW2. I’m not sure the same model would be workable without making a whole lot more work for GMs, but I’m not opposed to the idea in principle.

I didn’t see any “hate”, all I saw was several people pointing out that it did in fact violate the naming policy. Unless you’re saying that me guessing you’re not female is “hate”, in which case I apologize, madam.

I see a lot of debate here bout what people expect from support. and though I never played it, I suspect most are former blizzard-customers

Speaking as a longtime Blizzard customer, I much prefer ArenaNet’s support. I once had a Blizzard CS rep misspell my first name 3 different ways in the same email. My name is Jennifer.

Oh man, that’s hilariously awful. I mean, obviously not while it was happening. I can sympathize.

The way I’m reading it is:
-Rifter made a post saying “Haha that thread is so funny!”
-Thread in question gets deleted
-Moderator misreads Rifter’s post as critical/sarcastic/snarky about the deleted thread.

Honestly, I misread it as sarcasm too the first time. Took me a few minutes to sort out what you meant. There’s a lot of people who say things like “I just LOOOVE it when Anet bans me for a TOTALLY INNOCENT screen name!”, and someone probably misread it that way.

I love her voice, maybe because I am also a low-voiced woman (albeit a lot smaller). The scream and moans she gives when she’s knocked down though … my husband was like “what are you DOING to her?”

I like Gaardfrid. It looks like it should mean something. I was also amused at Sam the Hobbit upthread there.

Ylsa Kalisdottir is my ranger; I had a human warrior on GW1 named Kalisdottir, and since I couldn’t remember any of my old account info I thought it was a nice way to remember it.
