Loved the C64..cassette tape anyone? XD
We didn’t have the tape deck, but we had one of those floppy drives that would overheat if you didn’t have a fan DIRECTLY on it at all times. In fact, I may still have a C64 in a box in my garage. I wonder if it still works? I don’t like the emulator I got to play Mail Order Monsters.
How they got my new *safe* e-mail again?

It’s kind of ironic that everyone who comes here saying they’re hacked always says they have super-tight security, unique emails, and 47-character randomly-generated passwords.
Meanwhile I’ve been using the same email address for everything since 2009 and I haven’t even had a phishing mail.

Your last question was “how would I feel?” right? I’d feel annoyed with myself for making a name that violated the rules. But – not to sound rude – our feelings aren’t really relevant to the issue. Everyone who’s named their character something ridiculously obscene has been upset about it too. Everyone who’s been banned for using a mod has been upset about that.
You’re right though. No players have an effect on your name being changed, only ArenaNet does. And they seem to have made the decision already. There’s not really any “argument” here, just people trying to explain the issue and you refusing to recognize it.

They can’t monitor every single name that’s made. They can’t possibly make a blocklist of every possible variant spelling of every disallowed name. How many ways could you come up with to spell “Trahearne”? I can think of dozens! People come up with disallowed names that make it past the filter all the time; just read this forum for a few weeks and you’ll see some VERY interesting variations.
And they can disallow any name they want. It’s their rules. If they want to say "no characters can use the word “Banana”, they can do that. The rule they’ve made is that they don’t want characters named after major NPCs – just like a dozen other MMORPGs I’ve played.
What they CAN and DO do is get reports on names already in-game and then enforce the rule. It doesn’t matter how long you “got away” with it. It matters that someone brought it to ArenaNet’s attention and now they’re saying “nope, sorry”. For all you know an actual employee saw it. They don’t have to play with their ArenaNet tag on, you know.

Most every game I’ve ever played has had a policy that you can’t use variations on the names of major NPCs. As with any other violation of the naming rules, it doesn’t matter how long you’ve had it. They investigate when someone reports it and/or an ArenaNet employee sees it.

This is an inspiring thread.
Nice to see some particular references like games running off of audio cassetes and Phantasy Star. Zork, anyone?Leather Goddesses of Phobos.
Doesn’t that have images? Too mainstream. Get older!
Naw, it was a pure text adventure. Unless there’s a later version I don’t know about.
When you load it up the first time, it asks for your age because it had some …adult content that didn’t appear if you were under 18. I lied about my age, of course, but I was actually terrified that the computer would somehow know I was lying.
Jia, you’re old. Fidonet. 300 baud or 1200 baud for the rich. Local BBS’ in your area code.
True confession: I didn’t break up with my boyfriend in high school, because he was loaning me his 2400 baud modem and I didn’t want to go back to 1200.

Geez man, go eat a sammich.
I’m really surprised that we don’t have more older gamers since video games are such a great way to stay mentally active even when physical activity can be limited.
My grandmother-in-law is 80-something and plays Gamecube stuff pretty much every day. (She wouldn’t play GW2; she’s too paranoid of identity theft to get online, and considering she lives in the middle of nowhere, it’d likely be dialup or satellite internet with horrible latency anyway. But I bet if she did play it, she’d be as good or better than I am.)
When the Wii came out, we were all playing Wii Bowling at my in-laws house. My husband’s 80-year-old grandmother smoked us all. And all of her grandsons are gamers.
I mean, clearly, having three or four letters in sequence within a benign word should not prevent the legitimate word from being used! But if I type the name for the Factions character — assassin — it works fine. If I type a verb similar to the word “analyze” — inserted here: kitten — it comes out filtered. (The word is “asess” but add the double “s” in the first instance.)
I wish I could remember what game it was now, but it had a real problem with words like “assassin”. Which led to many a person being “buttbuttinated.” So … could be worse.
41, spouse is 38, two teenagers who also have accounts. On Wednesday nights, we often play with my in-laws, including my husband’s 65-year-old father.
Whenever anyone makes a crack about my age I ask them what hobbies THEIR mom has. None of them have ever answered that.
I’d like it to be equivalent with the old system; there was a “cheaper” cost to transmute below level 80. The lower-level stones converted at 3:1 when the wardrobe hit, maybe they could implement a different, easier-to-obtain charge for lower levels.
Is this email from Guildwars2 legit?????

Just a heads up. If they are sending you a phishing email chances are they know about that email address. What you choose to do now is your choice.
Not necessarily, some people get the emails who don’t even have a GW2 account. Gaile has said she gets identical emails warning her about her Blizzard account – which she doesn’t have. They’re just testing email addresses, a lot of the time.
I just took a new character to the Black Lion Trader (Weaponsmith) and although I got the dialogue about trading in my Town Clothes, when I accepted, I got nothing in return.
It seems new characters no longer are given any Town Clothes upon creation.
Yes, I left that part out! He will give you the dialogue and ask if you’re ready to trade, but there won’t be anything in your inventory when you’re done. I can see how someone might think they’d done it based on the dialogue, and then later wonder where their tonic went.
Again you don’t have any idea of this subject, or what they said. And as I see this, I’m not asking for your approval, more where anyone here except those admins and me, is ignorant of the facts.
So why politely don’t mind your own business? Because this isn’t, and again you don’t know anything about it, FOR THAT and only that reason you don’t have any matter here.
And for the other guy, Astral projections, let me check… You don’t know either and the others Don’t know either, so you don’t have any idea nor will have of what I’m talking about.
What I wrote was for a situational case with information about the “mistreat” and “bad behavior” not released. Was intended only for the admin, as they told me to post there, so if he can read the tickets and the incident I don’t have the necessity to inform forum warriors and wanna be about it.
If you don’t want the opinions of forum-goers, why are you posting on the forum? If you want to address customer service, this is not the appropriate venue. If your ticket needs further review, there is a thread for that. In fact, threads created solely to debate or complain about customer support decisions are against the forum rules.
If you delete it not only can you get 3 more tonics by making a new character and speaking to the NPC again but you can also buy it from the trading post if you don’t have a free character slot. Current price is 60 copper. http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/36179
I don’t think this is correct. New characters will not have town clothes, nor will they get a tonic from the armorsmith. I just made a new character a few days ago and tried it myself.
Whatever you have, that’s all you’re getting.
I just came here to say the OP’s name made me giggle.
You can absolutely buy the game online as a gift. When you purchase it, you should get an email (at your address) with the game code in it. Forward this email to your friend. DO NOT make an account with the code first, let your friend do that. The person who registers the code is considered the account owner.
I bought the game for my sister at launch and she’s had no problems.
It’s also not permitted to name suspected hackers on the forums, so this whole thread will probably be deleted.
You’d have to buy a Chinese copy of the game. The regulations in China mean that, basically, a Chinese publisher is paying ArenaNet to license the game over there. It’s run on the other company’s unique servers and is not connected to the US/EU game. I’ve seen this sort of thing before with other MMOs that had a China launch.
There is no option for English on the Chinese servers; I heard that it’s a legal restriction they have there. A dev mentioned it in-game awhile back.
Also I think everyone else is right about the inability to transfer. They way I understand it is that a Chinese company is paying ArenaNet for the rights to run GW2 there. So you’d have to have a China-specific copy of the game in order to play on their servers. I’ve seen the same thing happen with other American games that launch in China.
The Texas IP is a known glitch. It’s actually you, logging into the site, being routed through an NCSoft login server in Texas.
You can look up the IP but it’s very probably just this. Happens all the time.
thanks a lot for the help guys….by the way mounts are only available on store?
This game does not currently have mounts, sorry. Or did you mean something else?
If you’re not even getting the automated response, you’ll probably want to check this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Not-Getting-Our-E-mails-Hotmail-Yahoo-Gmail-Comcast
Keep in mind that hacked accounts/account restorations are THE most difficult and complicated thing they have to handle. It’s likely to take at least a week after you get a valid ticket number to see progress.
I had long hair for almost 17 years so believe me when I say I always try to give at least one character proper long hair, in whatever game I play.
…but then you went along and chose the single example that is most likely to turn them off the idea forever :P
(also, i think there is a similar hairstyle in the hair kits)
Dude, I’ve seen some of the devs. Trust me, they can rival that hair and have beards to match. They are so not afraid of long-haired males.
That is mix and match. Top Is Krytan Armor Skin and Bottom is Viper Medium Armor Skin. (Both are Gem-purchased only, though.)
Yep. I have the same combo on my Ranger:
Since then my account was hacked 2 times.
IP address was from TX, US. I hope that you can save my account and i don’t have to go to US buy a gun and shoot that mean hacker (which is a joke I would never do that).
(Can you for example block and IP from certain region ? I am 100% sure that I will not play GW2 in USA)
The Texas IP is actually an NCSoft login server. Sometimes there’s a glitch where, when you’re logged in to the site, it shows up as that Texas IP. If that’s the only strange IP you’re seeing, your account is now secure.

I think you might have a chance with an appeal on this one. Normally I’m the first person to chime in with “well duh what were you thinking?”, but in this case I see the probable issue and don’t agree. “Pwn” is well-established slang and I don’t think (among gamers anyway) that its meaning is terribly questionable.
You might try floating some alternative names in your appeal though. I remember “Foo Foo Cuddly Poops” offering “Foo Foo Cuddly Oops” as an alternative and being accepted.
Can I play as the new llama finisher?
I, for one, am glad to see this christian event ignored.
You must be fun at parties.
The Texas IP is actually you; you’re being routed through NCSoft’s Texas login server. That’s why it’s not asking for authorization; it’s originating from a valid, authorized IP (yours).
I’m not saying you’re not getting hacked, because it sounds like you are, but the Texas IP is a known glitch and not something to worry about.
The IP in Texas is an NCSoft login server. It sometimes shows up when you’re accessing the game or the forums, even if you play on an EU server.
But it does sound like something else has unauthorized access to your account! You should probably contact support and take some steps to secure your account. You can change the email address associated with your account by opening a support ticket.
You need to go to one in a major city, like Hoelbrak or DR.
Someone needs to photoshop some sunglasses and a flashing “DEAL WITH IT” onto that llama.
Panda hat master race
Her dead serious facial expression makes this perfect. “Laugh at my hat. Go on. I dare you.”
Where do people see all these characters running out and about? I took my guardian for some map completion adventure and haven’t spotted more then four players while adventuring in mid-level zones. So I was left soloing events and champions as usual.
Try Timberline Falls. I think I’ve killed that Krait witch more times in the last 3 days than I have in the previous year. And it wasn’t a massive zerg, (I try to avoid those because I lag out badly) it was 4 or 5 people at a time. Just right, as far as I’m concerned.
I wonder why you would want to shoot yourself in the foot so bad…it’s not like it hurts them to give you gems xD
I can see why he’d want to make sure it’s legit before spending the gems. What happens if he buys a bunch of stuff and then they go to deduct the mistaken amount from his account and take all the goodies back? It’s not shooting yourself in the foot to be honest about a mistake even if it doesn’t hurt anyone.
In any event, even if it is a mistake, since you brought it to their attention they’ll probably just let you keep them. I’ve certainly seen other people who got extra gold or gems or duplicate items from ANet who were just told “Thanks for letting us know, please keep it with out compliments.”
Or a Charr, but I doubt your Asura can get it that high.
Finally free of the tyranny of trenchcoats:
@Wesnt – you should only make one ticket, and you should only update it if 72 hours go by without an answer. Multiple tickets slow down the process as they have to close out duplicates.
No more trenchcoats! I feel so freeeee!

One refund can’t be rejected if you purchased one cloth item from the gem store that is now one outfit or tonic.
does this means they could refund witch costume?
Its so awful nowi asked but still waiting
P.S. also while we are here…is there any other costume without “the bald” effect?
You guys, you can still turn off the hats on the town clothes outfits like the witch and cook.
People don’t like change. Change is unpleasant. If you’re on Facebook, what’s your wall look like the day after they make a change? Everyone yells about how much they hate it and want the old FB back! And then in 3 months, we’ve all forgotten what it looked like before, they change it again, and everyone says “I want the old FB back this sucks!”
Sometimes these forums have really great, constructive suggestion posts. They tend to get drowned out by the threads of “omg you broke my favorite thing I quit 5EVA!”
I use the mouse on the left and map all my skills to the number pad. Weapon swap is right CTRL, and so on. I only use the keyboard for movement when I want to dodge (down arrow).
This is a little weird, but do you have your dyes sorted by color or rarity? The reason I ask is, I had mine sorted by color and I could not find my Ancient Silver. Turned out it was in the yellow category for some reason.
I’m just wondering if maybe Abyss is being categorized in blue or red or somewhere non-intuitive to look for it.
I’m always baffled by these threads. I know some of you people understand how programming works. So many things are dependent on other things, and you might not even realize change A broke system B until later on – and then you spend hours trying to reproduce the bug so you can fix it. It’s like you’re playing Jenga but some of the blocks are invisible so you don’t realize stuff was balanced on the block you pulled out until it collapses.
Even a seemingly insignificant change can have unexpected consequences. One person makes a text field slightly bigger (pets can now have 15-letter names instead of 12!*) and suddenly your whole game crashes.
Obviously they want to make sure as much of it works as possible, knowing that when they release it into the wild two dozen people will still manage to break something in a way they never anticipated anyway.
*based on a true story.
Good thing you don’t work for Anet then with how easily you get frustrated and flustered professionally.
My problem is the bad PR. Don’t say the 15th if the patch won’t hit the 15th in one of the two major regions your costumers play and pay from.
Missed the part where I said anything at all about my profession. Also missed where “baffled” became a synonym for “easily frustrated”.
But if you really want to know, I spent 10+ years as a teacher. There’s very very little that professionally flusters me. I can take being vomited on with total aplomb.
Are you suggesting that ArenaNet employees should go to work at 3am their time, or that they should alter the earth’s rotation so that Washington state is not one of the latest time zones? Maybe they can move their offices to the IDL so they can be at work the instant our societal construct of a date begins!
Probably.
As long as it takes.
You’re welcome?
it is NOT fare to announce a patch on 15 and have more half of the gamers receive it on 16th. that’s my point! i don’t care about wages, over hours and other stuff!
they said 15th, i want to get it on 15th, not a day later!
Maybe you should consider mentally adjusting the patch times to take your time zone into account. If they say the 15th, it’s your 16th.
Or you could go on not caring about anything but yourself, I guess. Hope that works out for you.
i asked but still waiting
