When will the patch go live?

I’m always baffled by these threads. I know some of you people understand how programming works. So many things are dependent on other things, and you might not even realize change A broke system B until later on – and then you spend hours trying to reproduce the bug so you can fix it. It’s like you’re playing Jenga but some of the blocks are invisible so you don’t realize stuff was balanced on the block you pulled out until it collapses.

Even a seemingly insignificant change can have unexpected consequences. One person makes a text field slightly bigger (pets can now have 15-letter names instead of 12!*) and suddenly your whole game crashes.

Obviously they want to make sure as much of it works as possible, knowing that when they release it into the wild two dozen people will still manage to break something in a way they never anticipated anyway.

Why are MMO characters called "toons?"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

bluestocking.6148

I don’t know why it bothers some people either. Normally something like a word bothers someone if there is some type of emotion involved. My guess is, these people are attached more to their characters than the people who use the word toon and it feels like it is trivializing it in some way.

If that’s not right maybe the people who are bothered by it can give a better explanation as to exactly why.

It just feels weird and, I don’t know … jarring? I guess it’s all those years of D&D, where I rolled up a character. Although it actually bugs me when people say they’re “rolling up a warrior” in an MMO, because there’s no “rolling” involved and all warriors are going to have the same starting stats.

Basically what I am saying is that I am a crabby old fart so get off my lawn?

It isn’t so much a case of it being ‘short for cartoon’, as a play on words. The short form of character is ‘char’, and ‘toon’ is in reference to that. A weird sort of rhyming slang if you like.

I believe this explanation to be the most apt.

I also believe that anyone under 30 won’t like the term as much… In a way, it is making light of the whole phenomenon of gaming and avatar representation in a virtual environs. Younger people (under 30) take gaming far more seriously, and for some, it is their only form of interaction with people of their own age and may be their sole current source of sociological growth and experience – so to make light of that – will feel ‘insulting’ to them.

Judging from the responses above of “hating the term” by the ‘younger’ crowd, I believe what I have inferred above to be correct, so far…

Erm, I’m 41.

We were big fans of that movie because it was the FIRST movie to combine cartoons and live action,

What, you never saw Mary Poppins?

Or Bedknobs and Broomsticks which combined cartoon and live action in the 70’s…

On topic…toon was used in mmo’s before WoW. I know I heard it when I played Anarchy Online and that launched 13 years ago. WoW likely just popularised it due to the volume of players plus the gfx style.

Oooh that’s right, I forgot about Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Both of those movies weirded me the heck out as a kid. I don’t know why. I think I wasn’t sure if the events were supposed to be “really” happening or not.

i also used the word “character”, i only come across “toon” mainly from WoW players.

It wasn’t just WoW, because the first time I heard someone use it was playing something called “The Realm Online”. Their website still advertises that they’re “dial-up friendly” so you can imagine how old that game is.

I first heard “toon” used in Wow, probably because of the overly cartoon style of the graphics.

However, personally I really, really hate the term “toon” for “character” and do not use it myself!

Oh thank goodness, I’m not the only one. I don’t know why, but “toon” bugs the crap out of me.

The ANet tag in PvP or WvW is a free pass to being killed instantly, so I don’t think playing PvP with the tag on is much fun

I know a guy who does that on purpose. Buffs his guardian all up, stands in the middle with his tag on and lets the other team kill him as a distraction while his team does the rest of the work.

As for my younger siblings, they’re all at least 18 and live 1000 miles away so no. I do play with my middle sister sometimes, though.

Well, the first SAB was very popular. World Two was loudly hated on the forums.

People rant about things they don’t like on here and then they act all shocked when ANet goes “welp, guess we won’t do that again.”

Not really. If A.Net listened to whiners – we would have mounts, a tonic to level automatically to 80, and a lot of other nonsense.

It’s rather easier to NOT create content than it is to develop an entirely new thing. Apples and oranges, as they say.

Oh, I’ve seen worse game filters. At least it’s a blacklist and not a whitelist.

I remember a game I played that tried to implement a “family” server (for parents to play with their kids) that had a whitelist filter. Of course, no one’s character names were in the filter so we all had to come up with bizarre circumlocutions in order just to type each others’ names. Like if I wanted to say “Ceridwen” I’d type something like “Care Ed When” because those were all valid whitelisted words but the name itself wasn’t.

They also have to be careful how they respond. In many cases, it’s probably safer (and thus easier) for them not to, and that’s not considering policies they might work under.

This, and also … a lot of game companies have very strict policies about who can post and when. “Dev bait” posts, where someone taunts them to reply? Yeah those are just going to get locked. You will never get a response to a post like that unless it’s a mod locking the thread. Because if they start responding to those, just imagine the escalation of posts to get a reply.

I’m sure this is more than a case of “went AFK for 5 minutes to get a cup of coffee”. I wouldn’t worry about ever walking away from my computer for a few minutes. It’s persistent unattended gameplay that is problematic.

The problem with things like botting is that if they give out that information and someone actually WAS using a bot, they can use that information to make the bot harder to detect next time.

So if they offer up “thing X, Y, and Z triggered the flag”, a botter knows next time to avoid X, Y, and Z things in his program.

GW2 Devs Have In-game Powers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: bluestocking.6148

bluestocking.6148

I’m not averse to action being taken against leechers, but I am sort of at odds with this:

GW2 Dev characters have in-game powers.
GW2 Devs playing on their personal characters don’t.

What is the difference? Devs’ personal accounts are their ANet accounts because they are in the ANet guild on those accounts. These characters are the same. There isn’t a distinction as far as I can tell.

Furthermore, these kicks are apparently happening not during work hours, implying that the developers aren’t sitting in-game at work and looking for people to kick. They are doing this in their spare time on the side. That sounds a lot like in-game powers to me, honestly.

I think it’s more like… some devs are authorized to use powers to moderate the game. Most of them are not. Also there’s a difference between kicking someone who is clearly AFK and using a dev command to, say, instakill bosses in the game. Likely there are people authorized to do the first one, but no one’s allowed to do the second outside of an incredibly rare debugging scenario.

Anyway, in my experience many games have the moderators logged into a different client than the actual game. So a dev playing on his character in the game client might see a player afking and then use a moderator client he’s also logged into to do the actual booting. Or they may not be in the game at all when they do it. His character might not be doing it, but the person may be from a different interface.

I never received my +20% Magic Find Item

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: bluestocking.6148

bluestocking.6148

I don’t know why you’re assuming his account has any MF when he’s said it does not. If someone never redeemed the original MF item, and never redeemed any essence of luck, then the account would be at zero and any characters made would have zero. He says he is unable to find the original MF-booster, and thus has never applied any MF to his account.

I was saying that since it is accountbound (and thus applies to all characters), his suggestion of just automatically applying it to the account made sense.

Now, if he has been redeeming Essence of Luck and characters are still showing no MF, then either something else is going on or he’s looking at the wrong thing.

I never received my +20% Magic Find Item

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: bluestocking.6148

bluestocking.6148

It’s a slim chance, since you’re both having the issue, but the 20% Magic Find item will appear in the mailbox of the first character you logged into after the update. I had logged into a rarely-used alt to check something and it took me awhile to figure out that’s where it was.

Is it possible you’ve deleted characters that it may have been on?

I guess its possible, but either way since it didn’t get applied to my account, i should receive a new one. Why don’t they just apply the 20% automatically to all characters at start?

uhm, not sure what you mean, but magic find is account bound, not soulbound, they changed that at the same time as the free 20 MF was given. So thats why I also find it strange that you talk bout having 0 magic find when you start a new character. all your character have the same (unless you run some booster).

Right, but in order to get that on your account in the first place, there was an item that boosted you to 20%. He never got that item. Thus his account is at 0% (I’m assuming you haven’t used any Essence of Luck since, OP?) So applying the 20% to the account automatically actually makes a lot of sense, instead of giving you an easily-lost (based on posts I’ve seen) item.

Still, I am glad to see that sales (gemstore or otherwise. Sales are sales, period) are stabilizing. It promotes a positive outlook and shows that the game is holding its own, no matter what the gloom and doom heralds crow.
