You don’t hear about all the people that do not have Guild Wars accounts, and still get the email; mostly because they don’t have accounts and can not log in to the forums to post about it.
If ArenaNet’s security was breached, we would get millions of posts about scam emails and hacked accounts.
And the people who are getting identical emails but purporting to be from Blizzard about their WoW account. Whether they have one or not.
Also I have yet to receive a single spam email on either my main email (which I use for nearly everything, including GW2 and WoW), or my old yahoo email that I keep specifically for spammy things – and which my GW1 account was registered on.
They may be harvesting email addresses from somewhere, but it’s not these forums.
If you’re saying you had an inappropriate character name, and this is your first offense, you should be able to log back in after you rename to something more appropriate. If this is NOT your first offense, then no. You’ll have to wait.

Edit: Inc always beating me to the punch. shakes a tiny fist
This game has a filter.
People who are easily offended need to use it. The reporting and suspending for offensive language is quite frankly user error on the part of the offended.
Also the agreements you click on at the beginning of the game will not hold up in the court of law. They’ve been overturned repeatedly.
G’day
You know, everyone assumes it’s people with their filter off that get “offended”. But in my experience, a chat filter is pretty much no bar to anyone who wants to get around it. People who so desperately need to type out their profanities are certainly willing to take the extra half-second to add/remove an extra letter, period, or asterisk or find a creative misspelling that will ensure it doesn’t get caught.
I know a game company that drops any message that includes the n-word, or that includes a short word for a sexual assault. If your message contains either of those words, the whole thing will vanish and not be sent to chat, regardless of whether your filter is on or off. All this does is slow people down for 30 seconds while they figure out why their message didn’t go through and then they misspell the word in question so that it does. So me having my filter on does no good whatsoever.
And of course there’s plenty of ways to verbally abuse someone that don’t contain a single filtered word.
I’ve never played a game where the punishment for swearing, for typing a few words, where people get offended at something stupid, is a “3-7 day BAN” or exile from the game itself,
If you want to punish someone for typing or voicing an opinion… you can simply mute them from the game, unless Anet have not figured that out yet… You are all only against me because you dont know what’s happened, and are all referring to something nearly no one reads at the start, and in result, probably arent the nicest people in the world.Saying i have a gaming addiction and problem and telling me to seek help is internet abuse in itself, that’s a form of abuse, bullying, so be careful of what you’re saying.
(that is not directed at everyone)A verbal infraction should result in mute,
An in-game bug abuse/hacking and that crap, should result in a suspension/ban.
Well, when you develop a wildly successful MMO, you can decide what punishment will go with what infraction
!
I love the bit where you’re saying you should be allowed to cuss all you like, but everyone who suggests that if you can’t stop from typing the f-word you might have a problem is a big mean old abusive bully. Love that cognitive dissonance.
You had your warning the first time you got suspended. No ones fault but yours that you keep choosing to type profanities.
Sounds like your account has been compromised. You’ll want to change your password and contact Support.
First of all, all of you here are not qualify to answer any questions about anything if you’re not working for Anet. You don’t know any more information than anyone else here so stop posting as if you’re working for Anet. Even if they say they don’t auto ban doesn’t mean everything they say are true or believable.
But … if you already don’t believe what ANet says, why does it matter if they reply or not? You’re not going to believe their answer either.

so someone is doing phishing attempts through the guildwars 2 official website?
No, they’re spoofing ANet’s email address and sending you to a fake site made to look like Guild Wars 2. It would be hard to steal login information if the link took you to a website that didn’t at least try to look like it was legit.
i see. well i swore at them as a reply on my phishing email and it ended up on this website as a support ticket haha. they responded first and created it. oh well, i updated the ticket through this site, see what they have to say about what happened.
I think there is actually one link in some of those emails that’s legit; the link that just takes you to the support page. The links at the beginning, though, to “verify your account” are not. That’s probably what happened.
lol I hope you get your stuff back. That sucks cuz I know how it feels. Ive been hacked as well but luckily Supported helped me …to an extent. Took me 3 months to get everything worked out. If you ask me, support needs their own support. They are so stupid sometimes and refuse to work with the players. 3 months is awefull for a settlement over a hack.
I find a great irony in your screen name.

Most tickets are responded to in less than 24 hours. If it passes 72 hours, there’s a sticky thread for tickets over 3 days.
I’m dying to know his “not bad” explanation for Sofa king.
-snip-
“(US and UK) someone of Japanese descent (shortened version of Nipponese, from Japanese name for Japan, Nippon)”
Um, nowhere in that wiki article does it explain how Nip is offensive. The nick was probably removed cause of a close resemblance in wording to a part of human anatomy.
It is absolutely used as a slur, whether you believe it or not. I don’t know how old you are or where you live, but I’m certainly old enough to have heard people use it as a slur. Also the name of the article is “List of ethnic slurs”.
I’m having this issue today as well. Nothing I do is giving me the prompt. I’ve tried left-click, right-click, F, running away and killing something else. I have no prompt at all when I approach Gavin.
EDIT: Okay, so here’s what happened: I exited the instance and did it over from the beginning. This time, I was very careful not to click on Gavin in any way until the quest prompt said to talk to him, and it worked. I think maybe if you accept the “talk” prompt before the quest asks you to talk to him, it doesn’t let you talk to him again.

I find replying to abusive behavior online with what I like to call “cheerful unconcern” is the best strategy. Either I act like I don’t have any idea what they’re talking about, or I just agree with them. “wow ur so ugly” “Okay.” Eventually they get so frustrated with the lack of response that they cross a reportable line, or they give up and look for a more easily-provoked target.
A guy on WoW once harassed me after I refused to give him gold. After about 5 minutes of me replying with “Okey-dokey!” and smiley faces, he got so angry that he ended up blocking me.
Don’t give them what they want. Report behavior that crosses the line and note if it’s repeated harassment by the same person. Because letting them provoke you into an unwise reply is exactly what they want.
Yeah, the reason account issue is that they believe your account is compromised. This can be they suspect you of sharing your account with others, or because they believe your account has been compromised by hackers.
Also keep in midn that yesterday gw2 has been out of service for several hours. So you ticket is prolly in between the big pile of tickets cause of that. Now you got a response your ticket is out of that pile and should be handled quicker.
What is the reason to suspend account completely if it was compromised? Just send a request to change password and block it until I will do this steps. It is common behaviour for thousands of companies!
But no, block it, send no e-mail, make me write a ticket and wait for few days to fix. Very reasonable behaviour!
They suspend the account so that the hacker cannot do damage to your account while it’s out of your control. Sure, they can send you a “better change your password” email – but how do they know you didn’t just, say, go on a week-long vacation and won’t see the email until you get back? You can bet if they did that, someone who was out of town would be here in the forums instead, complaining that they lost everything because they didn’t see the email and why can’t Anet just suspend the account?
I’ve played WoW too, and I’ve had tickets open more than a week without a reply. My husband’s D3 account got suspended over a $2 auction house transaction and we never did get that $2.
And as multiple people have said, ALL THE SERVERS went down yesterday. I’m sure they have a lot of “urgent” issues to sort through.
EDIT: Also, it may be Friday evening for YOU, but I happen to be in Washington where Anet is located and it’s not even 7:30am Friday here. Local support staff is probably barely even out of bed yet. There’s a good 12 hours before they will be done for the day.
(edited by bluestocking.6148)
I am not seeing how it’s not respectful of them to investigate it for you. If you sent a request “last night” (not knowing what time zone you are in), it might have been after hours for many of the support staff. They’ll probably have it sorted out for you today.
Hm, well everyone had the issue with the “trial account” today, as they had some kind of server crash. However, your ban message suggests violations of the naming policy. Have you ever been in trouble for a character name before? If not, it could be an error and you should probably send a ticket to Support.
It says modifying or tampering with the game.
Oh you’re right, I was assuming the red text was the reason. Never mind then.

I’m confused as to how, if he gifted you the expansion as soon as he bought it, the access key was already used to create an account. I gifted my sister GW2 by ordering it online and sending her the unused key, and she’s had no problems.

A friend of mine just had an issue with another game where he used a fake birthday to register and now he can’t remember what he used. Not because he was underage, but because he just didn’t feel like giving out that info that day. So he can’t recover his login information.
What do I do if I get banned for no reason?

the language filter is on by default, so being a newbie is not an excuse.
Except last week, I noticed my filter was off, and I’d never shut it off. A couple other people mentioned that possibly the patch had affected it, because they noticed the same thing. I generally leave chat filters on because I think they’re funny.
I’m not trying to diminish your frustration, but if you’re getting spam at an email address you only used for GW2, that does not mean the GW2 user database was compromised.
I get spam on a DAILY basis at multiple email addresses that I’ve never used anywhere. Not for forums, games, social networks, talking to family, etc. The addresses have never been used, ever.
3 of the email addresses are gmail accounts I created with the intention of using them as throwaway email addresses (if I wanted to use the email address somewhere but didn’t know how secure a site was). I never got around to using them as I’ve only been using my own domain for email, but those 3 gmail accounts still get spam.
I regularly get spam sent to various addresses at my domain, and again these are addresses that I’ve never used anywhere.
I keep waiting to get spam at any of the email addresses I’ve used for GW1 or GW2 but so far that hasn’t happened.
And meanwhile I’ve been using the same email for a dozen games, including this one, and haven’t had a single email. My GW1 used a different address that gets a metric buttload of junk mail, but it hasn’t gotten a single scam email either.
It’s baffling how all these people with super-secure unique emails are getting hit with these, meanwhile my GW2 email is the same one I’ve used for a dozen other games (including WoW) and I haven’t had one yet. I’m almost insulted.
hands you a cerveza
I am told that if you delete all you characters, you can move to a new realm free of charge. I’d definitely try Support first, though, and see if they will help you move. I think they’ll probably get it sorted for you.
That does seem pretty mild, I’m kind of surprised that triggered a ban.
Well, what do you think happened to your characters?
IPs can be spoofed. How do you think so many people get their accounts hijacked by gold farmers in other countries?
Sounds like your account may have been hacked. You’ll want to file a ticket with Support so they can investigate, and hopefully roll your account back and restore your characters.
Suspended for undirected profanity in say?

Oh, that makes sense. Because I didn’t think “off” was the default, and I normally leave my filters on because they amuse me.
Suspended for undirected profanity in say?

First you say it’s not directed at anyone, and then you say it’s directed at the opposing team (who can’t see it). Also, talking to yourself doesn’t require typing.
And finally, people have listed numerous reasons that the chat filter is off besides “I like to report people”. I only just realized yesterday that mine has been off all along, and I don’t recall ever turning it off.
Well, there’s a few things that might have happened;
1) You replied to one of the harassing messages unwisely
2) You didn’t reply to any of the messages, but you reported one, and the mod flagged your account by mistake (I’ve had this happen to me once on a different game)
3) The inappropriate language was from an earlier time, or something you’d forgotten about, and they only finished the review later.
So the message says “You’re suspended for 72 hours … because of reasons”? Or does it say something else?
They don’t police third-party websites. That’s another thing they’ve said repeatedly. You had to be doing something in-game that prompted this. What does the rest of your suspension message say?
I certainly wouldn’t take it out on the people trying to help me. That’s counterproductive.
ArenaNet has said repeatedly that they don’t ban people without a review by a real person. If you think they’re lying about that, then I don’t know why you’d believe any answer you got to a support ticket either.
Well, you’re not very nice. I am willing to bet there’s more to this banning than you claim.
Seriously? Don’t you have better things to do than reporting someone’s pet? Christ.
I wonder what about the pet’s name was so offensive that you couldn’t take it.How about a spider named Spits Not Swallow, would you think that was offensive enough to report? That is one name I have seen.
I’ve also seen, in other games, players name pets specifically to harass another player. Like a pig named “Hank’s Mom”, for example.
Someone did: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Email-from-ArenaNet-Please-read/first
I’m wondering if maybe this is the issue:
“-[May not] Reference names of copyrighted or trademarked characters, materials, or products”
I don’t know what you mean by “someone who competes”, but the name doesn’t have to be “offensive” to be in violation. Your post says “words or partial words which are not permitted”. You might wish to have a look here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-naming-policy/
Edit: And if the reason is not covered there, you should open a support ticket and discuss it with them.
Nothing personal, but people always say that and probably 90% of the time it was indeed something offensive. No, you don’t have to reveal the name, but we can’t tell you if it violates the naming policy or not without seeing it.
Wait, are you saying you’re trying to equip TWO of the same ascended gear? Two Lunaria Circle of the Moon?
They’re unique. You can only have one. All ascended trinkets are unique.
It may not just be the “Effin”, the naming policy also says you cannot reference real-life people. Unless, I suppose, your name actually IS Chuck Norris.
Rules of conduct:
You may not create character names or otherwise transmit, post, link to or facilitate the distribution of any sexually explicit, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, infringing, obscene, hateful, vulgar, racially or ethnically offensive, invasive of personal privacy or publicity rights, or objectionable in a reasonable person’s view imagery or content.
You may not market, promote, advertise, or solicit within the Guild Wars 2 Game or on the official Guild Wars 2 websites.
I guess you know better than to do it again now, right? So the suspension worked.
Look, dude. No one lives inside your head. You can come and protest that your name really stood for something totally innocent that has deep meaning for you, but that does not matter. The question you need to ask yourself is “would any person who has never met me know this?” and “Is there another more common use?”
After all, there’s a town in Austria that the forum would filter, but it starts with F and you can probably guess the rest (it ain’t “firetruck”). If I named myself after it, 99% of players would not look at it and think “gee she must be Austrian”. Drug references and genitals are not allowed in the naming policy.
people have followed the policy and procedures here and have not had items returned. “take the money and run”.
So you think this tactic will work for you, do you?
So you’re saying that ANet deliberately went into your account and stole your item because they’re big meanieheads? Because “remove” implies an intent, as opposed to a bug or a glitch which does not.
If you only want to talk to employees, you’d need to use the support link Mercury so helpfully offered you. The forums are mainly players, and Gaile is on vacation at the moment so you might be waiting a while for her to reply.
Drug references are prohibited in the Naming Policy. It doesn’t matter what you say you meant, because no one here is psychic.
The whole social stigma that surrounds a simple word is outrageous. It only contributes further to the distorted and disproportionate attitude so many people associate with it.
It’s perfectly acceptable to make the ‘Okay’ hand sign in Westernized culture, however all you need to do is go on Wikipedia to see that in several countries it even has vulgar meanings.Context and perceived meaning are things that we apply to words and language through social convection and popular culture over the course of several years.
To suggest that an MMORPG community of over 1 million is exempt not only to the wonderous phenomenon that is global culture, but to the world of explicit language is preposterous wishful thinking.
It comes down to a matter of business management vs player behavior. In an absolutely massive and successful game such as Guild Wars, is it safer to say that it is going to attract players from around the globe and therefore should take into account global differences in culture when slapping around bans for misconduct – or to assume that players themselves should consciously make that connection at all times of play?
I personally do not think throwing out 3 day bans for profanity is going to solve the issue. ESPECIALLY if people are not warned prior to receiving a 3 day ban.
Granted, I will DEFINITELY not be swearing again, but I feel as though I shouldn’t have to watch what I say in an online environment that I payed 60 dollars for. I’m not a child in elementary school and STATISTICS would argue that the vast majority of people I’m playing with aren’t either.
And if we’re arguing that American’s find the word more offensive than other Nations, I may as well bring up a free speech debate and argue that if we can’t arrest the Westboro Baptist Church under the guise of free speech, why is banning for something as minuscule as profanity acceptable?
This sort of thing is extremely rare in other games, especially MMO’s.
what you said was a racialy obscene word that is not covered under the first ammendment of the U.S. constitution.
The Supreme Court ruled in 1957 that the First Amendment did not protect obscenity.
westboro has the right to free assembly what i cannot understand is why they say God hates ciggarettes
The first amendment wouldn’t cover it regardless, as that only refers to government suppression of speech. ArenaNet is not the government. It’s their private playground, and they get to make the rules.
