Am i the only who isnt impresionned by this video ?
I mean, he/she only shows fight where his/her build is the rock against the cissor. What about condi-spec ? You dont show duel againt this kind of build cause you just cant do anything (or maybe you show this at the end, but i got tired before, anyway i bet 10gold you dont). I really hate this kind of video, where you “show off” THIS is the word cause you dont say a word about what owns you even if its just a matter of build, say it, cause here you’re just dishonest with the viewer (that why i say “showing off”).

I wont comment about your policy of “i’ll help in game not on the forum”, as i understand your point of view.

This is kind of what I was meaning in my comment. It seems he only included fights vs. players where his build was good or even at an advantage (and swapped utilities based on opponent even then), and, judging by the youtube comments, left out the ones where it wasn’t.

I don’t mean to say he isn’t good, you can tell from the video he is, but you don’t really display the skill you have by only showing fights where you have an even or better chance of winning.

I’ve definitely taken 16k backstabs before heh, although that isn’t the norm.

The problem is (as a D/D ele), fighting a d/p thief is a no win scenario. They have too many ways to avoid damage for you to 100-0 them, and when they get low, they stealth until they’re back to full health. There’s no way to get them down, all you can do is stalemate until you get bored and leave, or until you make a mistake and can’t recover since you don’t have one of the most broken mechanics that has ever existed in an mmo.

You can beat bad thieves. You can even beat good thieves who choose not to cheese. But you will never beat a good thief who abuses stealth. Fixing thieves isn’t even a matter of nerfs, it’s about fixing a horrendously broken mechanic.

Yea full zerk thief damage is insane but they die just as easily as they can kill you if only you counter or avoid the follow up hit. When fighting these type of thieves players it is all about how fast your reaction is after you get hit once. If your reaction is a bit too slow you will suffer defeat but if your reflexes are fast enough you will gain an easy victory. Of course you need to burst just as fast as well.

Great, now if anet can just work out a way for everyone who doesn’t play burst scepter to beat thieves we’d be all set.

They aren’t going to do anything complicated. For one it’s a lot more work than they are going to put into a trait that is only going to be used for pvp. For another, pvp games strive for clarity both when using and countering abilities. An average user should have a reasonably good idea of what their character is going to do at any given time, as well as being able to immediately tell what their opponent is doing.

No class should be able to simultaneously attack while evading (invulnerable) incoming damage.

This is such a big problem with the game. Between thieves with sword builds, AI condi builds, warriors with healing signet and multiple immunities, and the other various invincibility attacks, there are far too many ways for people to do damage without answer. That is just bad design. It removes the counterplay from the fight.

What is anet doing about it? Adding evade frames to burning speed. So much incompetence.

The root problem is that the devs don’t care about the pvp at all. You think we’d have chain immobilize if they cared? Hambows? Condi spam? Chain stealth? PU mesmers? Skyhammer? 3-4 months between patches? Asuras in pvp? Completely overblown graphical effects? Hundreds of bugs which have been ignored since release or earlier?

The list of problems this game has could go on for pages, and what are the devs doing about it? Nothing. They’re sitting around waiting for another 3-4 months to go by so they can release a small patch with a few number changes that doesn’t change anything.

Anet puts profits ahead of the game and the players 100% of the time. Every time keeping their word has ended up being financially inconvenient, they’ve gone back on it and told people to deal with it. Any time a mode has been deemed unprofitable, it has been abandoned.

There’s no point telling the devs what they need to do to fix pvp because it isn’t hard to figure out. The hard part is getting devs that actually care about pvp, and unfortunately the anet devs do not.

I’ve never understood why people talk about spammy like it’s a bad thing. They seem to just be meaning it requires pressing buttons at all times. What else are you going to be doing? Put a movie on and watch it while you autoattack?

The devs really don’t do a good job. They stumbled upon an excellent combat system, but everything else they’ve done is kitten. Balance is terrible and slow, most of the new maps are bad, there are no new game modes or any other content, they ignore most of what the playerbase tells them and then later have to slowly fix it, their communication is almost nonexistent and what they say is meaningless, they haven’t made a PTR, and the list goes on and on. People like the game because the core combat mechanics are really good, but the devs are not doing anything beyond that to improve the game.

Anet reminds me of Mythic and DAoC. They released a fantastic game with mechanics that were hugely loved, but had no idea what to do with it. The first expansion was basically just improving the current game, and things went great, but then they had a massive brain diarrhea and figured hey, let’s release Trials of Atlantis! And then they lost a huge chunk of the playerbase, and most of the subsequent expansions were either disliked or largely ignored beyond necessity to such a degree that some of the most popular servers were the Classic servers which got rid of much of the expansion content. Sadly anet is much the same.

They have a great base, but no kittening clue what to do with it. The only difference between DAoC and GW2 in that regard is that Mythic actually released new content whereas Anet avoids making mistakes by simply not doing anything.

Well, we knew there wouldn’t be any real pvp changes this patch. It really is sad though how many months it takes them to release balance patches. If you looked at the spvp by itself, you’d never know anet was a massive company. All that money and yet they put up the results of an underfunded independent studio producing their first game.

The core elements that contribute to combat are amazing; things like movement-related CC, leaps and evasive dodge rolls, active dodge are what set this game apart from other MMOs.

Even so, poor balance and class design coupled with a lack of game-modes end up ruining an otherwise outstanding PvP scene.

Yep. I enjoy mechanically playing the game, but there are a ridiculous amount of problems with it. And it isn’t just poor balance that can be ironed out over time. The problem is the extremely poor design decisions which the developers still believe are good.

It seems like the market has recognized the positive aspects of active combat however and is adopting it into upcoming games. It is my hope that the games coming out in the next year or two will be able to replicate the fast paced combat, but have developers that are more up to the task of actually designing a game.

Honestly it seems vague to be able to attack and evade at the same time. . .typically in fighting games if you attack someone you are left open to a counter.

This is one of the biggest problems with the pvp in this game. There are far too many ‘I can hurt you but you can’t hurt me’ abilities and builds. You should be able to either attack or defend, not do both at the same time, yet that’s what most of the popular builds do, and the builds that can’t end up getting pushed out of the meta as a result.

RTL is perfect the way it is.

Bullkitten it is. It’s horrible how it is now. I could sort of live with the concept if the devs had actually stuck to their word and made it so it still goes on reduced CD if used offensively but avoided (block, evade, invuln, etc), but right now there are so many ways to avoid being hit by RTL that if you are using it as a gap closer, it’ll still go on full CD kitten near every time. They need to either reduce the CD, or make it work the way they said they were going to.

I play all professions in spvp(as I focus only on the pvp gameplay,rather than pve or WvW) with a main thief.Those builds with signets are plain horrible,because you are actually effective(if you land every hit) one time in a period of 40-50 seconds.Low movement options,bad survivability etc.Such build can only exist in WvW where you can fight 1 time in 5 minutes-burst someone down->run away with shortbow.
When you play some real PvP like the tournaments with over 40-50 rank,then you’ll see that thief is ONLY good for roaming points,picking off someone on low hp and again short bow-ing to the next point.
If as an ele you can’t at least escape a thief with such newbie burst build then the problem is in you.Thieves based on crit dmg never jump on ele without help,cause it’s plain stupid.
As a profession concept thief is MEANT to burst and we’ve seen only nerfs since the dawn of guild wars 2,after which we became only roamers and a free kill in teamfights.
So as you eles can constantly buff yourself with armors and regens, thieves can and should do huge amount of burst.Else why bothering at all playing a thief,when you can just roll warrior with even bigger amount of dmg output,heavy armor,20+k hp and 10+seconds of dmg ignore.

First off, obviously this post is about wvw since you don’t see those numbers in spvp. Secondly, low movement options? Are you kittening serious? The thief that killed me in half a second jumped instantly from a mile away using multiple teleports. There is no lack of movement for burst builds. And bad survivability? Ya, it’s really hard to survive when you can go invisible every three seconds.

There’s no l2p for fighting thieves. It’s a broken class with broken mechanics. Thieves will never be balanced until stealth gets neutered to where it needs to be. It should have been an extremely limited use, short duration tactical ability, not something thieves spam every time revealed is up since it is always the optimal action.

I got hit with a 3k steal, 6k cnd, 13k backstab combo the other day. 22k damage in half a second. I’m not tanky, but still have 2.4-2.5k armor, so it’s not like I’m full glass. Thieves are dumb.

Check the gift prices before you buy. I’ve been doing this for a little over a week and never has the giant gifts been the best deal. The large gifts usually sell for more and cost 25 less glory.

That’s not always the case. I’m way above decent with my ele yet I tend to fail sometimes at seeing that burning speed animation specially coming from an asura. There’s also the case that I would dodge the skill and use my instant casts to do damage during the time the player finishes that skill. That won’t be possible right now with the dodges added. I would have to wait till it is done while in the meantime that players gain great amount of distance to me without any setback.

I still fail to see the logic from Anet on buffing a weapon set that is already very strong and balanced as it is yet fail to arrange the ones that really need attention like focus and scepter. Water trident addition is lame.

D/D did need some buffs, and I’m not sure why you think scepter needs attention so much more when it’s in a better place than dagger mainhand right now. Plenty of eles in tpvp running s/d or s/f, pretty much zero running d/d. Also, I’d be careful what you wish for with focus. You think the weak abilities will get buffed and they’ll just leave earth alone? The earth focus skills are so ridiculous, that if they buff the weak skills, they’re going to nerf those first. That’s probably a large part of why they haven’t touched it yet.

However, I have the same reservations about this particular change. Landing and countering burning speed was one of the primary play/counterplay components to being/fighting a D/D ele. I’m glad they were finally looking at balancing us, but I would have greatly preferred our mobility being returned instead of just adding evade to an already highly used ability.

I feel like Battle and Hydromancy will be potent for Dagger users. If you haven’t gotten a Hydro sigil now they have gone up in price.

I think Fire/Air looks good for heavy dps users. Sigil of Renewal/Leeching for sustain.

I am pleased as I know that even with the new ferocity changes and crit damage changes along with rune and sigil restrictions being changed some new and fresh theorycrafting will begin.

Was going over leech setups with a guildie earlier. Assuming you can only use one of each sigil, you could run sigil of blood, sigil of leeching, and slice of candied dragon roll and get something like 2.5k-3k damage and healing over 9-10 seconds. Toss in signet of restoration for good measure and you could have some pretty extreme survivability in a dps build.

Kill shot is absolutely kittened. Miss a single dodge and die instantly? That’s idiotic. It might not be “overpowered,” but it’s sure as kitten terrible game design.

Interesting, but not sure how it’ll actually play out. The blast finisher on frost burst is meh for solo. It’s not worth blowing water CD just to get a few stacks of might unless you are fighting terrible players, and if the cd is increased a lot, that’s actually a not inconsequential nerf to damage output and cc. Definitely has more potential in groups where you have other fields to take advantage of.

I have mixed feelings about burning speed getting evade frames. On one hand, great I’ll be stronger, but on the other, it removes a lot of the counter play options when fighting a d/d ele. Messing up enemy burning speeds is something I enjoy heh. I also wonder how it will function. Can I go through stuff like lines of warding with it? Will it ignore reactive effects such as shocking aura?

The armor of earth change is of course nice, but a 12 second difference isn’t really that huge of a deal

Overall, it’s not a nerf, but I don’t see any of the core issues being addressed here. Maybe if there are a good amount of nerfs to other classes in the patch as well.

Edit: Just read the summary thread. These changes are actually a lot more significant than they initially appear since the other classes are indeed getting some of their most OP abilities toned down. The vigor nerf to other classes is especially nice. Finally justifies our vigor taking up a trait slot.

Rate my WvW solo Roaming hybrid build

There are several major problems with the build.

First off, I’d go way less celestial and get some soldiers/knights/valk/zerk instead. Your physical damage is very low with that setup.

Second, signet of fire sucks. If you are really set on adding some condi damage in, use cleansing fire instead. It does less damage, but it’s instant, cures conditions, and synergizes with your water traits.

Third, with zero arcane you have unreliable fury uptime. Not only are you unable to maintain it with zero boon duration, you are going to have to choose between using your auras at the optimal time and using them to get fury. You are also going to have spotty vigor uptime for the same reason.

Fourth, there’s no reason to run Melandru runes for soloing, especially with heavy condition removal in the build. Traveler is a solid option, going triple boon duration works as well, or divinity.

Fifth, strength of stone is absolutely not worth it. It adds a bit of damage, but in order to get it, you are giving up your only source of stability (unless you swap in armor of earth), which you desperately need for soloing.

Sixth, sigil of life? Sack up and run bloodlust.

Seventh, You have zero sources of protection. You are going to get butt kittened.

Overall, your build has a lot of theoretical defense and offense, but very little of both in reality. Your condis are going to get cleansed, your physical damage is low, you have tons of healing power but only one of the heals, and you have no stability or protection so you’re going to take a kittenload of damage.

If you are set on diamond skin (I’m somewhat ambivalent about it), this is what I’d do:

First off, forget about the hybrid thing. You don’t need to run traits/utilities for it. You aren’t going to be running any extra sources of condis such as perplexity, so there’s no point investing heavily in it. With 30 earth and some celestial, your condis will get a bit of an edge that makes them harder to ignore, and that’s the best you can do without going full condi build.

This trait setup paired with traveler runes:
30 earth – stone splinters, rock solid, diamond skin
20 water – cantrip mastery, cleansing wave
20 arcane – renewing stamina, elemental attunement

This will give you high up time stability, perma vigor, and high uptime protection, as well as some other smaller benefits such as perma 25% speed and high uptime fury.

Then again, your setup looks like you really want to run around healing a lot, so you may just want to go the traditional 10 air 30 water, 30 arcane with triple cantrip.

There are a lot of directions you could go, but that build is nononono.

I actually ended up playing with dev in soloq… he was playing an ele and was doing fine O.o

Were you playing with Powerr? We won our first match-up in the 2v2 tournament last weekend with him playing D/D ele. He’s a great player.

As for elementalists, we’re not scared to talk about them, we just haven’t talked about any profession really (in regards to the next update). There are a bunch of changes coming down the pike for the entire game in general. I mentioned on the ele forums before the holidays that we think the main problem with elementalist is sustain – and that’s what we’re focusing on addressing. I mentioned on the ESL livestream today that our first step towards rectifying this is making Signet of Restoration function the same in PvP as it does in PvE.

Not afraid to talk about them? I’m still waiting for one of you to explain why RTL goes on double CD when blocked/evaded/invulned after it was explicitly stated that it would not.

There’s no reason to pair pve stats with grinding pve gear. It is 100% doable to provide pve stat armor that can be gotten for free from merchants like the current spvp gear.

Pve stats make for a far better game, but kitten adding grinding to spvp.

It sucks. Well, it’s not completely useless. Obviously shocking aura is nice, but you can definitely put those points to better use elsewhere.

It’ll fire whenever you get cc’ed, not just when you get cc’ed by a melee at an opportune moment. If you get cc’ed from range, it does nothing. If the warrior uses one of their many cc’s before actually going in for the skull crack, it does almost nothing. If you get bas venom backstabbed by a thief, well ya, he’ll get stunned afterward… but you already got hit for half your health or more and all you’re stopping are some comparatively low damage autos. You’ll get a lot more mileage out of running rock solid (20 earth) and simply avoiding the cc in the first place.

The grounded (20% to stunned) is fairly mediocre as well if you’re talking solo. Maybe if you’re running with hammer warriors you’ll get some use out of it, but it won’t do a lot for you by yourself. Your primary cc damage combo chains off updraft, and the damage modifier doesn’t apply to blowouts.

Also, the build you are looking at is really not good. You definitely want to have at least one of your heals (15 water, 30 arcane). Without it, you have practically no sustain and will just get crushed. You are also missing a lot of condi clear.

Personally I think the air line is completely overshadowed by the other lines for a D/D ele. You can run it if you just really want to hit hard and don’t care about being really effective, but it’s never optimal in any situation. This is largely due to the fact that both of our defensive lines carry a decent amount of damage increase with them. With 25 earth you get both stone splinters (+10% to essentially all damage), and +10% when your endurance is full (great for initial spikes), as well as all the defensive benefits from the line. With water, you get +1% damage/boon at 25 points and some superb defensive utilities.

If you want to do damage as a d/d ele, trait like a bunker, and use your gear for your damage.

Here are some builds you can try out which give you enough defense that you can squeeze a lot of offense into your gear:

10 air, 30 water, 30 arcane (the traditional D/D setup)
20 earth, 20 water, 30 arcane
30 earth, 10 water, 30 arcane (my go kitten yourselves condi users build)
10 earth, 30 water, 30 arcane
20 earth, 30 water, 20 arcane
10 air, 10 earth, 20 water, 30 arcane
25 earth, 15 water, 30 arcane (one of my favorites for all around play)

Each has a slightly different flavor, but the same general idea. Lots of defense and sustain so you don’t need to go bunker gear to survive.

What ever happened to eliminating apex builds? Increasing build diversity? All that nice stuff? Did someone bump into the white board and erase it off the list? The difference in power between the top builds and everything else is insane. It’s so big that the build is 90% of the fight, and the 10% skill only comes into play if both players are running fotm builds.

Game has been out for over a year and the balance now is every bit as horrible as it was at release. How many years do you need to get even a minimal level of balance?

Solo WvW roaming build help

Ele is interesting in that you can really run almost anything just because of how varied the skillsets are. D/D is the traditional roaming build, but S/D works perfectly fine as well. Fiery great sword was made castable on the move last patch and that opened up more options for lower mobility builds.

The basic breakdown is S/D if you want to run a very high damage build with lots of burst but mediocre survivability. D/D builds do less damage, but have much higher survivability.

For D/D (since that’s what I’m familiar with), your options are extremely open. Basically 0-30 air, 0-30 earth, 0-30 water, 0-30 arcane. None in fire. Full tank gear to full zerk gear. Generally for D/D, it’s better to go for tankier trait lines and get your damage from trait modifiers and gear. The damage lines generally don’t offer as much and are only for if you just really want to hit hard.

Here are some builds that I switch between:

20 air, 20 earth, 30 arcane
25 earth, 15 water, 30 arcane
20 earth, 20 water, 30 arcane
20 air, 20 water, 30 arcane
30 earth, 10 water, 30 arcane

The only constant for me is 30 arcane. I wouldn’t say it’s a necessity, but perma vigor, elemental attunement, evasive arcana, and low attunement recharge just make the class feel right. But there are plenty of people running low arcane and doing fine.

Gear is very open as well. Generally speaking, you start out fairly tanky and swap in higher dps pieces as you improve.

For a tankier setup, my favorite build is 25 earth, 15 water, 30 arcane. Earth juices up your burst a lot but you still have a ton of survivability through having both heals and stability for ether renewal. I usually run a setup with ~3k attack, ~50% crit damage and ~50% crit chance with fury when I run that build. Strong survivability but still nice spike damage.

For damage, I’m currently running 20 air, 20 earth, 30 arcane. About 3k attack, 60% crit chance, 80% crit damage. Survivability is decent for a burst build but can still put out some serious damage.

For utilities, you’re going to be mostly running cantrips. Sadly the class struggles without them. If you’re going full zerk burst you run arcane blast, arcane wave, flash. If you’re going mid range you run mist form, arcane wave, flash. If you’re tanky you run mist form, armor of earth, flash. Grab cantrip mastery if you run any water.

I know this may not seem helpful if you’re looking for a specific build to try out, but ele is a class that is really personal. Part of why it doesn’t do as well in spvp is because you can’t tweak it to fit your playstyle as well.

Your best bet is to just pick a middle ground starting build, and then see if you prefer more damage or more tank and go from there.

Almost everything eles do is a skillshot. Also, most of our auto attacks are so kittenty that they aren’t worth using at all. There’s also less room for error since we lack the cheese that some of the other classes enjoy such as healing signet with multiple invulns or chain stealth for mesmer and thief. Then there’s the fact that if you want to do real damage you end up very squishy. Staying alive on a glass d/d remains one of the hardest things I’ve experienced in this game yet the reward, at least the objective reward, is no better than the easy classes and often worse.

@Aza: you see many GS wars in wvw due to mobility, WvW is huge map so mobility has greater meaning there

GS wars for fighting are pretty meh

Have you ever tried playing hotjoins with more casual friends and constantly ended up on opposite teams? They don’t like it. At all.

The social aspect seems to get skipped over a lot in these threads. If you want to play with friends in wvw, you can do whatever you want. You can roam with a few people and focus on kills. You can run around in a medium sized guild group to fight zergs. You can run around in a zerg. You can grab a couple friends and follow whatever commander is leading. You can either play it casually, or hardcore and be successful with either.

What do you do if you want to play with friends in spvp? Team arena, and that’s it. So playing with friends, who quite possibly have varying skill levels, requires making a team and playing competitive fights which have a ranking attached to them. And if you want to play with competitive players sometimes and casual players other times, well, enjoy having your rating (and thus mmr) repeatedly kittened.

Anet is trying to attract casuals to pvp by dumbing down the game as much as possible, when all they need to do is make it so friends can play together casually without being punished.

it wouldn’t be so bad if it was the first condition taken away when you try to cleanse but it is annoying when you have 6+ condi on you. use your shouts and yet you still have 10+sec of immbo and cant do anything about it

Yep, and yet when I try to use stability with ether renewal, a thief can instantly strip it and daze me regardless of how many boons I have up.

Mesmers are extremely hard to deal with as a new player, at the higher end of the skill curve we are no more powerful tan any other class. The key to beat us is spotting the real mesmer which unfortunately only comes with practice.

Any time I see a mesmer say this, I immediately know they are no where near the higher end of the skill curve.

The problem is that you can’t nerf aoe without fixing the major flaws in the game. How can you expect people to use single target abilities when there are 15 pets in the way? How do you expect to land single target abilities on an Asura in the middle of so many graphical effects that you can’t even tell they are in the fight? How are you going to reliably land single target abilities on people who are constantly stealthing?

It isn’t that aoe is so strong or that single target abilities are too weak, it’s that the game is so poorly designed that facemashing aoes is the only way to actually be effective. If you try to just nerf aoe, the game will somehow manage to be even worse than it currently is. Which probably means aoe nerfs in next patch.

Pet builds are obviously ridiculous, especially when combined with the aoe cap and the fact that they can intercept ranged abilities. The problem is that this goes way back to when anet was buffing engi turrets. Everyone was like wtf? why would you ever want to encourage that kind of thing in pvp? And the devs responded saying they wanted to provide simple builds for less skilled players.

Unfortunately, simple gameplay for unskilled players is the pvp devs guiding goal. The pvp devs don’t want to make the game challenging or punishing, they want everything to be extremely simple and easy so that there isn’t much of a gap between mediocre players and good players. They believe doing so will bring in the casuals and finally get them the numbers they are lacking.

Considering they’ve been running the game into the ground for well over a year now and the numbers are still pathetic, you’d think maybe they’d change tact and look at other games which actually had successful pvp and notice that they all had intensely high skill caps and didn’t encourage skilless builds.

Sadly, this is arenanet, and the pvp devs don’t give a kitten about anything because they have a free ride from pve. If the bosses at anet actually fired a pvp dev or two and made it clear that results mattered, we’d have a significantly better game. As long as these horrendously apathetic and incompetent pvp devs are rewarded for achieving nothing, the game is not going to improve because they have no incentive to put any effort into their work.

Hmm looks like you haven’t come across the full zerker P/D thief same traits as condi but full zerk ranges wittle you down then bursts with another set usually S/D. Still a doable fight but I find P/D power w/ S/D offset the hardest thieves to fight currently.

With a honorable mention to annoying S/D evade spam 30 acro thieves put right into same boat as PU mesmers and P/D thieves.

Pretty sure I’ve fought the thief you’re talking about lol, or at least one of them.

But ya, thief beats ele with almost every weaponset. Broken stealth mechanics just give thieves too much control over the fight. Even if your build is good against the thief’s build or you are a significantly better player, they can reset the fight with stealth an unlimited amount of times until you finally make a mistake and can’t recover.

Then I fit into that “extremely unlikely" category. I have been roaming with s/f for over a month now. You personally know how good my s/d Ele was at roaming….. With s/f is even better.

Maybe it’s better for fighting, but I have trouble believing S/F is better for overall solo roaming considering the extreme lack of mobility outside of FGS.
