Another overflow nightmare in the making
in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath
Posted by: hedix.1986
Aye, we all prefer being unable to even play at all.
Oh wait..Or… they could give us control and let us pick overflows manually, like GW1 did with districts.
This! I’ll never get tired of repeating this. hugs Shinzan
In order to play with friends, and not have to rely on AFKers or people that a) don’t listen, b) have poor builds, d) don’t care to improve/help, the overflow problem must be taken care of! Preferably before new megabosses and definitely before another Elder Dragon finale.
Dont bandwagon on the same 2-3 servers. These events, at least the first few days, are a lot more fun on the less populated servers.
Stop thinking you have to be on a T1 server to enjoy content. Spread out a little.
I don’t approve it, but I see why ppl do that.
- T1 servers have more people and more good players.
- The overflow will likely have more good players that can get organised.
So everyone who cares goes to those servers after getting tired of trying with pugs that never learn. Small pop servers have more limited supply of good players and they’ll mostly end up on main, while the overflow usually fails. Again, choice of overflows and choosing who to play with in events that require organisation is necessary.

Got a perfect strategy for the retake. We basically take a few days off and let LA itself work against the enemy. Scarlet / Elder Dragons / Whatever captures LA, they find out about Zomorros and decide to arm the Aetherblade army with precursors and legendaries. Many rares are lost. Our Personal Nemesis curses the Mystic Toilet and Anet and ragequits, alt+F4. We just move back in et voila! LA retaken.

In a way, it’d be nice if home cities are used more. My favourite is Divinity’s Reach, but as there is no cheapskate port-to-PvP-port-to-city thing with DR, LA is more convenient.
Not concerned about Dungeon token vendors, they can move to the Vigil Keep, I’m concerned about the entrance portals to the Mist War. At least temporarily while the occupation/destruction lasts.

Umm, wasn’t EotM supposed to be a place for GvG as well? Considering it was initiated as Anet’s apology for their employee trolling GvGers.
But if there is no choice of overflows, how can 2 guilds of the opposite sides actually arrange a GvG session? Did anyone try this?
Taxiing own guildies is one thing, not sure how taxiing people of the opposing server would work or if it is possible. Basically, commanders of both sides need to enter EotM at the same time and hope they end up at the same place.
EotM as it is only solves the issues of gold league servers and creates some problems for those with lower population. Again, like with the big world events like Teq & Marionette, inability to choose between overflows and see their numbers leads to problems in this game.

This is not how you present a story, guys. You’re supposed to weave exposition into the gameplay, not dump an NPC with verbal diarrhoea who spews out the amazing story so far in all its glory.
As much as I agree, this random!scholar NPC is still an improvement from out-of-game blog posts that used to be the only way to deliver lore. NPC Plot Dump was poor, but at least this was in the actual game, so that the majority of players who don’t read blog posts, actually get some clues as to what is going on.
That being said and giving Anet the credit for slightly improving game lore (so that is actually delivered in-game), they should really work on better storytelling and lore implementation, as well as flesh out more believable characters.
Scarlet’s Lair and the clues there were a good step in that direction and much better than the “Exposition Fairy”.
[DV] – megaboss community
Some people just don’t read / listen. I don’t even know why they’re bothering to come to these events then. Some people have lousy builds. But they do show up. And take a place on the main from a better player. And fail the chains. And cause the event to fail for everyone else. But there’s nothing to be done yet cause we cannot choose who we play with and Anet hasn’t fixed the Overflow issues.
[DV] – megaboss community
More like: “I queued to the main map for a week and all I got was this lousy title.”
This. :p
Also, “Extreme Gardener” gets a +1.
[DV] – megaboss community
Long waited salvation for the most populated servers, but not for the Bronze League. Even during the first few weeks of S1, we didn’t have that big of an issue with the queues. Yes, you would’ve waited a bit, but it’s wasn’t a very long wait. Bigger problem was actually being outnumbered by blobs, coverage etc.
So I’m concerned that EotM will take the players away from the real WvW maps – maps that count. It will be brand new and shiny next week, everyone will rush there and borderlands won’t have enough manpower.
One of the reasons for EotM was also to include PvE population into WvW, give them a reason to join. But I’m sceptical as to how successful that will be. Season 1 was one such attempt. Achievements were poorly conceived, PvEers caused queues etc, but even so, WvW population wasn’t very welcoming to the influx of players, or as they were being called “walking lootbags”. I don’t think EotM will address this. Experienced roamers will pray on the achievement hunters most likely. And as result, full-zerk PvEers will either go back to PvE where their builds work well.
tl;dr – double-edged sword indeed. Saves servers with long queues, but distracts much needed population from smaller servers. WvW community needs to be more welcoming to pugs / new players to make them WvWers. A new map with LS achievements will not help there.
[DV] – megaboss community
(edited by hedix.1986)
My main concern is what will this new map mean for smaller servers, ones that didn’t have a big issue with queuing. EotM is fresh and shiny, and since Anet is lousy in giving us new zone content, everyone will end up in EotM (myself included, I’m curious). Ok ok, all-PvEers are going to be easy loot, but this will draw players away from the real WvW maps. Fine for big servers that have tons of people in the queue, a la Gold League. But for the less populated ones, which have trouble filling the 4 existing borderlands, the task of not being outnumbered is going to be much more difficult.
Maybe one way this wouldn’t be an issue is if they make EotM accessible solely through Living Story for the 2 week duration of LS, and then open it up for WvW.

SAB ISNT STORY. Its just some fun optional quest. And I bought this game to play GW2, not a game boy emulator.
This.
I understand that some people like SAB, but tbh it is wasting developers’ time that could be spent on something more significant – like writing a believable story, creating new zones and dungeons, actually exploring GW1+2 world. If I wanted to play a silly platform game, I would play it. Instead, I bought an RPG/adventure MMO.SAB is an action/adventure/RPG mini-game, and it works fine. Regardless. The developers have no sway in a story, they need proper writers for that….if you are fine with more scarlet, then keep your current mindset.
Huh? I definitely do not want more Scarlet, which is why I said that nothing should be distracting developers from focusing on a believable story. GW2 started off as a really interesting setting that left a lot of unanswered questions from GW1, the main GW2 storyline, Destiny’s Edge etc. There are plenty of GW1+2 mysteries and areas that haven’t been made accessible yet. Revealing all of that content will take a lot of time. So instead of throwing in a random-villain-alliance-spoils-an-RNG-drop-festival and other content barely connected to the lore of the existing game, devs should be exploring new zones and do at least some progress on the lore, with so many loose ends around.
While SAB was fun as an April’s Fools joke, it’s a game inside a game that’s being developed despite the main game lacking in features (story, zones). The reason most people enjoyed it was probably because it was a break from grindy, disconnected story of LW and the Scarlet nonsense. So the state of the main game should be addressed before developing mini-games.

As for opening the portals, uh… I’ll have to think about that one.
Portal is opened on one lane only (i.e. no lanes). Other players fight the mobs, while 1 person is soloing the champ inside. They have the Teleportation Sickness so that only one player can go through the portal.
The only issue renamining is Fractal Scaling. And what spoj said about champ1 mechanics. All champs should be soloable.
And actually, unlike other world bosses, this event already reduced the zerg-fest as it splits the group. And then it splits it some more once inside the portal.
[DV] – megaboss community
Staff in dungeons is great for skipping trash. Swiftness, plus Line of Warding to stop aggroed mobs. But yeah, that should only work if there is time to switch to S/F before actually fighting.
[DV] – megaboss community
Neat idea, if there are 5 pads inside the portal, each party member would have to solo a champ and destroy the generator. Should be fun. But lane defense seems tricky in a small instance, it would basically permanently split the dungeon party. But say if everyone would defend a lane and then enter one by one when the portal opens (still governed by the Teleportation Sickess), it could work.
Marionette would be much more fun in an instance, than having to fail because some people run with useless builds.

For an important fight like the one with Elder Dragons would be, crucial to GW2 story, we cannot rely on overflows! While these boss fights are fun, the amount of randomness and waiting to keep a spot on the main server and pray not to DC, would break the epic Dragon fight. Since EDs are so crucial to the story, they should be instanced. Preferably in a dungeon, if not, in an instanced raid where we can choose who to play with.
Definitelly don’t want people with utterly poor builds/gears and AFKers to cost me my victory in that final battle. And I don’t want to wait for it for hours either!

If she actually had a good motive, and if we’d end up fighting side by side at some point. I still hope that’s where they are going with this.
We don’t want another salad dude stealing the credit for our work, thanks.
This. 1 Trahearne was enough.
[DV] – megaboss community
If more open-world raid bosses will be coming up in the future, an overflow mechanic revamp is absolutely necessary!
Kick AFKers, get people into highest populated overflow, allow the choice of overflows.
People wouldn’t loose the morale for being stuck in an overflow, If that overflow would be able to quickly get the population like the Main. The other day in Lornar’s, several overflows were created. After DCing, I traveled several times, but the 2nd overflow I went to had more than the 4th, which technically should be the one closer to the Main server.
This randomness is really killing the big events. And this is not a matter of content it created for casual or hardcore players, it’s a matter of dumb luck, speced up PC and not disconnecting.

Wiki and Dulfy are the easiest and fastest ways to learn basics, so ofc, people will spam it in chat as a reference. On RoS, we also have people describing everything on TS.
But what kills the morale is that with all this prep and guidance, there are people with poor gear/builds. And they fail miserably, in defense and during champs phase. It pains those who put in a lot of effort to loose because of those guys. Cheering and support is excellent, as long as people put effort. But if pugs are gonna AFK and run like headless chickens with lame builds despite all the guidance and repetition, ofc the morale is going to go down.
Because overflow is an instance really, but there’s no choice of overflows and we cannot choose who to play with.

Congrats Deso! Glad an EU server did it first.
People are complaining about the loot – what exactly was the loot? Same as Teq or?

Storytelling has improved greatly, starting with Nightmare’s End. There’s still room for more improvement (connecting LS to existing lore in the game), but at least this patch gave us a story instance to catch up with NPCs and Scarlet’s Lair – my fav bit of LS since the Bazaar. It’s nicely designed, there are so many details to look at, and it’s an excellent fuel for speculation. Thank you, Anet.
Best of all – the story components are in the game this time. And I really appreciated what Rox said in the instance when asked if she took down Tequatl on her own. She admitted that there was “a small army there”. Omg, did we just get some recognition in this game?!
Though, not sure if I like Taimi’s idea of a Scarlet being a good guy all along – it certainly wouldn’t serve Anet to end a story arc with an OP Sylvari that steals the show (Trahearne 2.0).

Maybe she wants to bore tunnels to get to the source of the ley lines.
After that she will inject the poisen she produced at the “Tower of Nightmare”, and the Ley Lines will transport the poisen to the Elder-Dragons.
We know, that the elder-dragons absorb the energy of the ley lines, so they will absorb the poisen, too.
Remember, the poisen leads to illusion. You can’t differentiate your friends from enemies under the influence of the poisen.
So Scarlet could poisen all elder-dragons at one stroke, and we would see elder dragons, who fight each other, because they no longer recognize the other dragons as friendly.
While using the probes to inject something in rather than harvest is interesting and would be a pretty ingenious way to stop the dragons, I find it unlikely that this will work like an illusion. Remember, we have no evidence that dragons are friendly towards one another in the first place. Also, not all of them are out and about, close to each other, so there’s no reason why they would fight.
Another issue is that the thumpers have now been renamed to energy probes, which does sound more like something that would collect the energy instead of injecting into the leylines.

Yes to everything Pixel said! Pre-event mechanics was in GW2 since launch, it worked, it should have stayed that way.
[DV] – megaboss community
So far, events where few AFKers or people not listening/reading can prevent the entire event from succeeding, have been an excellent example of behavioural biology.
[DV] – megaboss community
Fight it. Fail or win. It’s about trial and error, and ultimately learning the mechanics. Christ, people are so whiny.
Normally, I’d agree, but since we cannot choose which overflow we end up in and who we’re playing with, the ability to learn from trial-and-error is limited. Cause there always seem to be AFKers and people not on TS or reading the chat.
The fight is instanced, an overflow is basically an instance. But we cannot choose who ends up in our instance. So the event absolutely depends on random people all pulling their weight. Come next overflow, nothing guarantees you’d end up with the same people, to be able to correct any mistakes.
[DV] – megaboss community
People guest over to the biggest servers on the first day of the patch and find themselves in overflows? What a shock!
Hey I don’t agree with it, but that’s what tons of people did late last night, after a few failed events on home server. Which made our home efforts harder later, because so many determined people guested. I guess it happens because of they know how Teq “worked”. Bigger servers get it done on some overflows, while smaller ones, not so much.
[DV] – megaboss community
I understand that they want to avoid farms that kill the event like with Scarlet’s invasions, but with so many gold sinks introduced lately (ascended stuff, need to change builds, poor RNG), it feels like there’s just no reward for time spent. Reward should be increased for events that require ridiculous waiting times.
[DV] – megaboss community
People wait in one zone because they want to fight on the main, that on most servers has the most organised people / highest chance of success.
[DV] – megaboss community
WoW devs NEVER tell ya how to beat their bosses. The best groups do then publish videos and guides. Too much complaining, these fights are amazing.
WoW has instanced bosses. Think for a moment what that means. That means you can choose who is going to fight the boss alongside you. Just as importantly, that means you can choose who is NOT going to fight the boss alongside you. You don’t have to worry about some random guy being AFK in a turret…a turret upon which the entire fight (and the hour(s) spent waiting for the fight) hinges.
QFT. While I find these new mechanics awesome and I do like organisation over TeamSpeak (player cooperation ftw), there are always people who don’t come to TS or don’t read the chat, so event completion purely depends on which overflow one ends up in with what kind of people, which kills the fun. Possibility of learning from one’s mistakes is low as well, because if we cannot choose who to play with, during the next event there will again be AFKers and new people who haven’t tried and learned from errors. The way to avoid that is to camp in the same overflow, which is hours of waiting – not how most people want to spend their gaming time. Sadly, doesn’t seem like Tequatl feedback was taken into consideration.
[DV] – megaboss community
The timer + the overflows really kill this event I agree.
That is the main reason why people rush to big servers like Desolation or Blackgate (brand only) which creates even more problems for those servers that suddenly have bazillion overflows and people on their home server can’t get into the main.
Plus waiting for X hours because you might wind up in the wrong overflow is just simply not fun gamepay.
[DV] – megaboss community
know we all said we wanted the lore in game and not on the website, but the Scarlet scribe is a fairly rubbish way of doing it. Go on. Go on. Go on.
.
It’s still better than nothing in-game! While written as a meh recap and pretty straightforward, at least it is in game and not on some random blog post, and it gives us information. So thanks for listening, Anet! This update, along with the Nightmare Ends, is probably the most they’ve given us in terms of the story since the release.
Had one issue with it. The new character Taimi rambles on about how Scarlet might be the good guy raising an army to fight the dragons. Since the damage is done, it’s be better removing her without infuriating the players even more, by making her Trahearne 2.0.
And yes, the instance conversations are repeatable.

Just wanted to know if these are intended behavior or bugs/oversights:
This is will RNG-auto-fail the fight in some circumstances (a player is left to solo the champ – or forbid, no player is allocated to a pad). It would make more sense to allocate players in round-robin.
this happened to us. we finished 4 pads only then to notice no one was in the 5th. This can’t be “working as intended”
There really should be a way to hop to the next pad after you’ve defeated your own.
Yes! There should be a limit of players on pads, but we should be able to fill one if empty. Or if people die too soon. It’s a bit depressing not being able to complete the game because of either the teleporter bugs or other people’s incompetence.
[DV] – megaboss community
Good point. While these mechanics are really fun and it’s great to get organised, it’s impossible to have everyone on TS – there always seem to be people who don’t read the chat or troll around. While I raged about that when Teq was up, no point raging again. But it should be noted that it is not fun when an event fails because of AFKers and players that are not investing. To avoid that, since this isn’t instanced and we cannot choose who we play with, it is really important which overflow one ends up in which leads to hours of waiting. Connection issues mess this up even further. And that is not fun gameplay. So scaling and fixed overflows would be much appreciated.

Well, just ducked into WvW for the first time in ages… and there are probes there too. Thoughts? ‘Cause these can’t have anything to do with Primordus or ley lines.
Very good point, been wondering about that as well. Is it just game mechanics like the offshoots, so that WvW players gets some news of what’s happening in the PvE world? Otherwise it could be explained by Scarlet’s interest in the Mists, but then makes it difficult to correlate them to ley lines and the Depths.
