Disclaimer: watching the video or even reading this post will make you a bad player!

With the constant rise in prices of everything needed to keep your character up to date in terms of gear, I decided that the best way to do it is to refute the meta itself. I only have one Ascended Weapon, namely my Dagger, and since I didn’t want to pair it with a crappy Exotic off hand, I started to fight without any offhand weapons. Needless to say, the results were really good and I think I will keep sticking with this formidable weaponset.

DP thieves? I laugh at them!
Perplexity Condi Engis (who even use Supply Crate!)? They die by my powerful dagger!
Permastun, Hammer/Mace-Shield Warriors? Who said you need stunbreakers? 4x Heartseekers are all you need!
“Challenger of the Arena” who don’t even /bow before duels and permastun you with PW? There’s no escape for them!
Lyssa Runes (hello, upcoming nerf!)? Who needs them!

What is best about this video is that I never used my trump card: Twisting Fangs. This is, in my opinion, the best skill in the game. 4 initiative for a skill that roots you in place for 1 second, does less damage than autoattacks and stacks 2 Bleeds for 10 secondos! This is freaking OP, I can only imagine the things I could do once I fully master this weaponset (in the video I even wasted a few Blinding Powders because I’ve never used that skill in a long time )!

Also, since my thief has gone on a diet (last time she checked her weight she was not so happy), I limited the use of my food buffs to only one Deluxe Burger : apparently, the increased Poison Duration was what I needed to kill that Perplexity Engi. Really OP food, I expect its price to increase tenfold very soon.

I hope more and more thieves will start using this weaponset. Maybe they will realize how good it is. The fact that you can chain 5x Heartseekers without worrying of managing your Initiative is so good! I can’t understand how people still have to figure it out.

Anyway, seriously, the only roaming spec I use that won’t be nerfed by this patch is my Condi Nade Engi.
A conversion rate of 15 Ferocity=1% crit damage is a lot. I hoped for something like 10 Ferocity=1% crit damage (and that would still be a huge), but like this I don’t know if I should keep playing some roaming specs anymore.

I let my mother play with this spec in a solo q match. The only game she had played before was Super Mario Bros for my Game Boy, 15 years ago.
She won the match just by standing all the time at home point and didn’t get decapped once.

Well played. There was not even a single decent player among those, and not a single build that could have given you problems, but still you “danced” very well among the enemies.
As usual, it takes only one good player to completely mess up an outnumbered fight. It’s rare to win even 1v2 when you are facing a good opponent, and it’s close to impossible of they are anywhere decent.
Build is OP, but counterable. I like PD thieves as they kill PU mesmers really effectively. Too bad they are REALLY rare in EU :/ alas, the PU plague is still increasing

I play a ZERG speced necro, and I have the rogues ganging me all the time. Normally when I am trying to reach the Zerg. Last night during an epic 3 way zerg fight, an EP Rogue picked me out and took me down. That is what they are suppose to do.

The frustrating part is when I try to do the same with my Rogue, the results are disappointing. So I fully understand why people get frustrated when dealing with them. I also hate dealing with D/D elly’s and Mesmers.

I play a Staff Ele and when I see a thief trying to gank me when I go to my zerg I easily outrun them. I can go from North camp to briar with a DD thief chasing me. I admit though that a DP WILL make me pop my FPS if he keeps stalking me.
And when I play necro, I simply kill all the “omgicanpermastealthyolo” DP thieves trying to kill me, unless they are more than 3.

Ive been playing condi war. Yes you can faceroll over noobs, but once you start playing against good players you have to play smart to win 1v1s, doesn’t matter their class.

My condi war only has 19k health and cleansing ire is my only active condi clear so it’s not exactly a bunker. And I only have 1 block sword #5. All you have to do is dodge or block my pin down and impale, stay out of LB burst circle, and use your condi clears if I land flurry on you, and you’ll be just fine.

It is not I that have to dodge your Pin Down or Impale.
It’s you that you must miss it.
That’s the problem with those two skills.

I always find stealth-“spamming” Mesmers a bit of a weird thing. We’re talking 24-30 seconds CD on one, 36-kitten on another, 90s on another and 90s on the final one.

And none lasts long either (3s, 3s, 2s, 5s respectively, +1 each for PU).

How is that stealth “spam”?

Mesmers with 20 20 30 0 0, X/T+Y, Decoy+Veil+Blink+Mass Invis have a 42,2% of stealth uptime. Veil actually stealths you for 3s (untraited), and can and WILL be used twice.
That’s actually a lot of stealth uptime.

And those mesmers are food for my minion zoo condi necro and engineer respectively, as they have no condi removal.

And what does it matter? Unlike cheesy D/P thieves you can’t die to a PU mesmer if you don’t want to. Their damage ramp up is slow, and they can’t chase worth crap.

If you died to a PU mesmer it’s because you stayed around to eat all those clone deaths and the build up of bleeds that is much slower than a necro or engineer can stack bleeds.

For the most part anyone can ignore a PU mesmer and kite him around. They only become somewhat effective when holding a point in wvw, but in any fight where the opponent can move on without losing anything it’s a waste of a spec compared to playing a phantasm mesmer, which is just as good a duelist spec and can actually kill people in a short amount of time.

Where did I say that I lost to a PU mesmer?

This thread is kind of funny.
The only thing I agree with the OP is that Impale needs to be reworked a bit.
Also, anyone with half a decent understanding of the game would know that any skill with 0,5s cast time is undodgeable unless predicted or unless the opponent is simply spamming his skills.
But that’s it. It’s “only” impale that needs rework. Anything else is fine. I have fought condi users as a power user, and have fought power users as a condi users. Conditions are fine, some classes have better condition cleanse than others, but believe me that most things are quite balanced at the moment.

Sure hihey, its the baddies spamming stealth, but does that give me a counter against them? And do those baddies survive? yes they do actually. Probably moa would be the only counter or any 4 second stun.
But hey then you have blinding powder and shaddow step. Even if, let’s say you get stunlocked, you can still escape with that spec. It’s just annoying to fight against, nothing more than that. I also don’t get why thieves play it, its not even that good.
But 1 thing I do know is that perm stealth should never be in any mmorpg.

You can figure out who is halfway decent at using D/P from their build. A decent D/P will run Shadow Refuge, Infiltrator Signet and Shadowstep as utilities (heal can be either Withdraw of HiS). THOSE are the ones who are almost impossible to take down even if outmanned, because they will always have 2 escapes ready.
Even if they don’t have Infiltrator Signet, Shadowstep is still a 1200 range (double) teleport, so no matter what you do, unless you manage to down him from 50%→0% (which is achievable on some classes, like Eviscerate or Killshot warriors, Shatter mesmer or other thieves) in a single burst, he will get away if he is determined not to die. It’s basically the same as a Dogged March+Melandru GS+Sw/X Warrior. And I am afraid to inform you that no matter how you nerf stealth, the combination of Shadow Refuge+Shadowstep (or Shadowstep+Shortbow) is a guaranteed escape for ANY thief. Stealth based ones just have more potential to annoy people thanks to their traits, and I even laugh when people say “hey look I am 1v4ing and not dying lololol”, when all they do is go in stealth, backstab, then go back for 10 more seconds hoping that any of their opponents would leave. I have done this in the past, but realized that it’s simply not worth it as ANYONE can do it.

I have 2k hours on a thief, when d/p became the meta i put him down, spam stealth and bore an opponent to death, 5-2-5-2-1-5-2-5-2-5-2-1 Like hihey said, build clealey takes ALOT of skill toplay, like 5-2-5-2-5-2. Try playing a d/d ele and swappign the attunements to gain relevent boons/attacks for a fight, then you will know what it means to have a spec that is “far from easy to use” stop defending a gimick you like to abuse in wvw hihey, all you do is spam stealth on your thief be it home bl or any other map, i feel bad for the enemies having to go through the process of watching you spam stealth and run off when they hit you. :P

My main is Ele, and atm I’m roaming with my engi or my necro.
You don’t know me, nor my way of fighting. I log to thief only when there are some mesmers who like to play #yolomodelookatmyboons and need a lesson to put them in place.
But you are right about one thing: the first weeks I played DP I really did only 5222521.

Can we remove stealth spamming specs once and for all? Not to call it OP, but it pretty much ruins the gameplay of the player facing it. It’s not fun to fight and there are too less counters. The specs are too easy to master and sometimes are really strong.

Of course I mean D/P Thieves and PU mesmers with this. These 2 specs heavily rely on stealth. In my opinion stealth should be a luxionary, not something you can spam. If you can’t handle the enemy’s damage and get outplayed, you shouldn’t be able to cast 2/3 skills and have a free escape ticket. With both specs you have kittenness outplaying you so you can’t interrupt it. With D/P thieves you have blind spam just before stealthing. This makes it almost impossible to stun or interrupt them from stealthing and with PU mesmers there’s a fair chance to get aegis so they can’t get stunned either. Not only that but mesmer’s gameplay is really dodgy, making it pretty useless to try to lock them down on 1 point cause they can easily blink away.

I would come up with a suggestion that demotes spamming stealth, but doesn’t affect those who use stealth as a luxionary:
When using a stealth within 10 seconds from the previous stealth, your stealth will last 1 second shorter. This effect will stack the more times you use stealth within 10 seconds of your previous stealth, meaning if you use a ’’3rd’’ stealth within 10 seconds of the 2nd stealth while already having the debuff your stealth will last 2 seconds shorter.

Making revealed last longer would ofc also just be just as good to nerf it as mentioned above. 3 seconds is just a joke. It should be at least 4, maybe 5 seconds.

On some way I still think stacking stealth should be possible since that can offer teams still some combo’s and surprise attacks, however spamming stealth should be punished.

We need less passive play, more active play!

Thief is probably most active played class in this game and yet you speak about passive play.

Thief is 100% active. Some baddies like to stealth and regen to full by abusing Shadow Rejuvenation, but that’s what they are: baddies.
A thief who is passive will not do any damage. A mesmer who is passive is still killing his opponent.
Anyway, I’ve thought of many ways about how to nerf stealth, but it’s impossible to do it with the current state of the game. Too many thief’s build are dependant on stealth, like it or not. D/P trickery, for example, NEEDS stealth, and I daresay that it’s the build with the highest skillcap in the game. Even SA D/P (assuming a good player and not someone who is in stealth for more than 50% of the fight) requires A LOT of skill to be effective with. Of course, if the opponent is a newbie than he will get killed anyway, but against a decent opponent D/P is far from easy to use

I probably should have asked this in one of stickied threads, but I couldn’t delete my post. Basically I was curious which stats are best for a D/P roaming thief. I wanted to do more small scale pvp. My biggest problem is I am used to spvp where there aren’t really any stats. Also does gear boost your characters much? For instance will a player in ascended be much better than one in exotics?

The difference in Ascended vs Exotic is minimal BUT it’s still there. Although if you are looking for a Power based spec (which almost all D/P require), if you just manage to get the Ascended weapon you will see a boost of 1-2% of your damage just from that. Getting full Ascended Trinkets will provide another 2-3%, and the armor will do the last 1-2%. Not noticeable, but could surely help in some situations.
As for the stats, there are a lot of opinions on how to build a D/P thief. Just start with some zerker/valk and mix it with some more defensive (PVT, TPP) items.
Remember: the main reason D/P thieves take some defensive stats is to avoid being instagibbed by other thieves. I started as full zerker, but when you are outmanned the risk of a random D/D thief jumping in and getting a Steal→CnD→BS combo are really high. With some toughness/vitality you can avoid being oneshotted, so I usually try to stay above 2,5k armor.

Somebody could post video how to kill decent perma stealth thief who doesn’t even try to fight back. I sometimes manage kill these noob thiefs who wear berserker, but pros use some full PVT and doesn’t take kitten dmg. Sometimes i land hammer stun like 10 times and they still flee same way every time.

Tell me the name of the class you want to see kill a D/P thief. I can currently manage to do it with:
-Thief
-Engineer
-Necro
-Mesmer
-Ranger
-(Warrior still learning)
Also, there are no “pros” in this game. There are good players and bad players. I agree that good players mix some PVT in their sets when they roam in D/P. But saying that “they take kitten dmg” is hilarious. They take A LOT of damage, the only reason for a roamer D/P to take some PVT is to avoid being instagibbed by other thieves.
Lastly, if you want to KILL someone, you need to have the spec to do it. If you are not equipped with a build able to beat a D/P, don’t complain that you are losing.

It is quite popular; the most forgiving toon when used in glass cannon next to warrior due to reseting fights effectivly, good access to evade, high mobility, stealth, teleports, unseen burst with no cooldown except revealed’s and because stealth itself can be traited and improved to grant 100% crit chance, condi removal, aoe blind, regen and increased movement. not all builds could combine that into a single build and still have crazy burst but boardland bloodlust, sigil stacks, consumables, guard buffs could compensate pretty well for that. unlike warriors who will outrun u and could see laughing at your petty attempts to chase them but at least u know they’re gone while a thief could leave you puzzled where they might have ran to, in which direction or if they even ran at all only for them to strike out of nowhere with the upper hand. D/P is the most popular and forgiving. it offers all the surviveability a thief needs built into the set. I personally dont mind them when they’r alone but if they got a partner then I’d just find an ally, npc or run away somewhere.

i used to run ele and ranger in wvw but those two are thief baits so i stopped. I once ate a 9k cloak and dagger+ sigil of fire proc+steal and my ele was downed even before the actual backstab could hit me. i have an easier time with mesmer warrior and engi. if you want to stand a chance against them run bunker ranger with apothecary but the good ones would just run away.

You really have no clue on how thieves work. Typical post of WvW baddies who don’t know anything about the game and still write WoT to try looking cool and experienced.

You must be a beacon of credibility with all that 1337 toons and a group of buttbuddies.

The Ange server is usually populated by decent people. No matter the build, if it is allowed by the rules then people will not complain. Of course, sometimes there is someone with an odd build who seems to win every fight, but still, the atmosphere is usually pleasant and if someone starts whining the spectators will make fun of him.

Well, I saw the video of you roaming as DD alongside VII, and have to say that you got carried a lot there. You basically ran in circles avoiding the melee train and doing close to no damage to no one. Any bad thief would have done basically the same as you did, but at least he would have killed that necro (lol).
You don’t even run Hoped to find some footage of a (self proclaimed) skilled ele but sadly, it looks like I was wrong :/

Don’t run PU in tPvP. It sucks and will only make people on both teams to hate you.

If you don’t feel you need the extra survivability from Decoy, you can take Illusion of Life. If the opposive team does not have many condi users, you can consider using Ogre runes instead than Lyssa.
Other options are Phantasmal Fury instead than Far Reacing Manipulations.

Try to snipe from afar, remember to use your Portal and kill Condi Necros and Engis ASAP when you see them in a teamfight. Don’t go alone doing 1v1s, be a dps support for your team and make use of portal.

Good, another easy kill for my engi.
Bad DP are way better than bad DD. A bad DD will still kill you if you don’t pay attention. A bad DP will not.

Apologies to those in these markets, but why do a few people have very large orders for fine and masterwork quality of these weapons, when most other weapons and armor of similar lvl and quality sell only for around vendor price?

It may be luck, but i think it’s because these items have a higher chance if dropping a t6 than others.

Is this really true? And if so, why do they have a higher chance at dropping T6? First I’ve heard of comparable items having different drop rates.

It’s not proven, and it might be just luck. But when I realized that some weapons (they were only 1handed weapons though) had a higher price than others in the TP figured that there must be some trick to it. I assumed it was because of this, and since that moment I have always salvaged all those weapons.
I recall getting a lot of ori out of Axes, but much more mithril out of, say, 1h Swords. From Shields I would get either Ori or Ancient Wood, from Warhorns too.
I have never kept track of my findings, but when I had my bags full I usually got enough t6 to consider them worth of being salvaged rather than vendored

EotM Red Keep Balanced?

Probably because the ‘Red’ servers are technically supposed to be the weaker of the three colours. This is also reflective of the Overlook keep in EB. Definitely the hardest of the three keeps to siege.

Both Green and Blue keeps in EB are way easier to defend than the Red one. The red keep has so many flaws (included the lord insta dying if you siege it from the back) that when there is a zerg in inner it is simply impossible to hold it.

Reason thieves need a nerf

Classes that counter D/P thieves in a 1v1:
-Nade/bomb engis
-Hammer Warriors
-D/D eles (assuming the thief is actually dueling and not just trolling)
-PU mesmers (arguable)
-Zerk Guardians
-Condi Necros

Of course, you have to know your class and know how D/P works in order to beat them.

The majority of these classes counter a brain dead D/P thief. A D/P thief with any skill with perma stealth outside of the Engis AoE and come in for a backstab, run away and stealth. Rinse and repeat.

Hammer Warriors could be a counter but their attacks are very telegraphed and they require to be in melee range which can be a problem with pistol #5.

D/D eles I could actually see being a counter with all of the AoE they have but then again a D/P thief can just stealth until the Ele stops. Just like the Engi.

I would have to say that PU mesmers are not a counter since a D/P thief can perma stealth and completely avoid condis and clones.

Zerk Guardians. I assume you mean the ones that teleport every where and blind constantly. I don’t really see how (maybe you can enlighten me) since blinds really do not affect D/P thieves.

And lastly condi necros. Condis hurt every class and this could be a counter if you can put enough condis on the thief before he stealth.

About engis: a Engi with any skill will not have any problem in using his blocks and Invulns to avoid being backstabbed if he sees the thief avoiding his AoE. Plus, while Shadow Embrace is a good trait for condi removal, the condis put out by a nade engis are usually too many to only rely on SE for cleansing. Also, the Engi has so many interrupt skills that the thief will have a hard time against a good one. I suck as engi and made one just to understand how they work, and guess what, I melt D/P thieves.

About warriors: Their attacks are telegraphed but a D/P does not have any source of Vigor. The only way he could mitigate damage is with blinds, against which Warriors have zerker stance. Also, using hammerstun near the BP field will force a dodge from the thief, making him waste half of his Ini pool. Not to mention the #4 skill insta-aoe knockback, the #3 cripple (usually an immob) and #2 weakness are all great against D/P.

PU mesmers are a counter because if the thief is stealthed to cleanse their condis the thief will not do any damage.

Blinds not affecting D/P thieves is the most fun statement I’ve read in this thread.

Condi Necros have an istant interrupt with Doom. Again, I suck at necro but I kill so many D/P thieves with it that it’s extremely fun.

The only easy thing about D/P is chaining stealth and saying “hey look i’m stealthed you can’t kill me trolololol”. A good player will crush a D/P, period.

Fun fact: almost any fotm reroller PU mesmer is a wannabe hero 1v1 player.
