Even if they dealt 400 damage each, it’s still added damage that shouldn’t be there.

moreover air fire are just a small part, every rune/sigil used currently i uettrly broken ( hello vamp runes)

IMHO the problem is that they can proc all sort of attacks that happen “on hit”.
Take “Chill of Death”, for example.
In theory, you shoud be afraid of getting hit while BELOW 50% hp. In practice, this never happens, as usually the attack that drops you below 50% HP procs Air/Fire, which will then proc Chill of Death.

Yeah, as I said I tried to show “more” of what happens during a GvG. Most videos around are just of people getting oneshotted. But here, I tried to show you all the other sides that most people don’t know.

I believe Sindrener to be the “best” thief in the GvG scene, but his videos, despite showing many cool things, are mostly for “veterans”.: my video, on the other hand, should be easy to understand for everyone who is somewhat accustomed with GW2

This is a collection of our best moments as a Focus Party back in Vendetta [VnT].
The video was made to show a taste of the life of a Focus Party member, which is made both of epic moments and disappointing letdowns. I tried to include all the possible situations that a Thief can encounter, but of course these might not be enough. Gameplay is by no means perfect, but it should be fun to watch (I hope).

Clips include GvGs against dF, vE, RS, TA: basically, the best guilds around when VnT was active.

I can easily say that playing in the VnT Focus Party was extremely rewarding. All the players in it were extremely cool, and although some might have been hotheaded, they were all an important asset in our team. Our main tactic was to wait for the enemy Focus Party to engage (sometimes even baiting it), and then try to either jump on them or just retaliate: we were extremely specialized in Focus Party fights, and we are proud to say that we have lost very few FP fights during the whole pS/VnT lifespan.
My role, specifically, was a “supporting” role for FP: my primary goal was to ensure that everyone in our FP survived, especially our leader (George). Of course, sometimes things did not go as planned, and that’s when individuality had to kick in: I might not have had the same DPS as a Critical Strikes Thief, but on an already weakened target my burst was deadly.
Our strategy worked really well…. until TA’s Focus Party came up with the “screw FP fights, in order to win GvGs we need to take down casters, or even melee-ers”: sadly, this tactic not only completely countered ours , but became extremely popular. That, however, was at the end of my GW2 “career”, so that’s why all the fights shown in the video are quite old – some are even 6 months old, but I believe they are still cool too watch

In case you haven’t realized it yet, I easily get excited during a GvG: it was very common to hear a loud scream in our TS during a round whenever I managed to do something “clutch”. Going “on fire”, and letting your teammates know it, can be of use as a psychological morale boost to both me and the ones hearing the scream (but don’t be too loud – I still have to learn this though ).

I kept the editing simple, I hope you’ll like it.

If you have anything you want to ask, go ahead and type it. I will answer every question regarding the video you have. Also, if you have any question concerning a FP I might still be able to answer it (I took a long break from GW2 but recently came back and got updated on the new “meta”). Build, tactics, composition, role… if you want to know something, I will try my best to answer your question.

…and test your reaction time. Don’t cheat, it won’t help your situation (a lot of the people in the LB are “cheaters”).

My average reaction time while 100% focused is 230ms, which means that when I am “expecting” a PBS I have the time to dodge it (take into account your ping as well – I usually ping below 100ms, so I am able to dodge it IF I know that the ranger is going to use it soon).
However, if I am not expecting it (for example, if I am currently focused on something else, like interrupting his Heal, planning something, talking to my teammates, looking at the map…), my reaction time is around 400ms, which means that, taking ping into account, I will hardly react fast enough to dodge it.

In any case, this is how I divided skills:
-Skills below 0.5 cast time (instant skills AND 0.25s cast time skills) need to be “randomly dodged” (which means that no matter how fast you are, you either predict the exact moment the enemy is going to use it or you won’t dodge it).
- skills with a 0.5s cast time are usually dodged IF predicted (which means that if you expect them to use a certain skill soon, you might react fast enough to dodge it).
-skills with 0.75 cast time need to have you focused on the fight, but you should be able to dodge them always (assuming you are not out of dodges).
-skills with 1+ second cast time can be dodged all the time if you see the animation.

Of course, LEARNING the animation is actually important. For example, PBS has a 0.5 cast time, but its animation is not “that” different from a normal autoattack, so by the time you realize that the enemy is going to use PBS instead of an autoattack at least 0.1s have passed already.

You need to camp Shortbow. Just don’t even think of staying in DP unless they have already used the Mantra or unless you can safely stealth (through LoS or through the use of the stolen skill to gain Stability).

The funny thing is I can beat a cele meta spec engi but not a turret engi….

I can “beat” most “meta spec engis” as well but it takes a huge amount of time and a all my CDs, both being far more useful if spent in other ways.

Being able to “beat” something does not mean it’s the wisest thing to do during a PvP match.

Some very good advice in previous posts.

From playing dps guard myself (still a noob), the only trouble are trickery thieves for me, when they time the interrupt well and when they land the stolen ability. Still very difficult match up for the thief.

Landing the stolen ability is the key to beating good mediguards. Still, it’s incredibly difficult to use it due to the insane amount of blocks/blinds of the Mediguard.

…it’s basically impossible to get killed by anything that is not a group of 4 full zerk, DP Trickery thieves in TS who decide to focus you. You can even troll zergs with this build, as you are pretty much unkillable in wvw, and you can still kill any zerk class very easily.

That’s not true. Mediguard is one of the most resilient professions in the game when it comes to focus fire.

I agree with everything Shockwave said, and will also add this:
_use Infiltrator Signet if you get hit (and pulled) by Binding Blade.
_use Infiltrator Arrow if you get ringed and Shadowstep is not ready.
_use Blinding Powder if you get ringed and you can’t swap to shortbow or shadowstep
_use the stolen skill if you get ringed, that’s basically a 100% guaranteed hit and will void the ring

Just don’t go 1v1 them and let the tanks deal with them. Play safe and abuse your mobility with Shortbow: Infiltrator Arrow is a GREAT escape tool, and should not just be used for moving around while out of combat! If you’re being focused, it’s better to Infiltrator Arrow somewhere away instead of wasting 4 initiative on a very situational (and short duration) dodge with SB#3

Serious question: Counters to a turret engi?

Take your time to kill rocket turret first. Then you just need someone with enough stability to kill the remaining turrets fast enough. Any Mesmer, LB Ranger, Power/Condi Necro should be enough to nuke the turret engi who is fighting on point with one of your bruisers.
After that, spawn camp him with your roamers.
If the two engis at mid figure out they have a brain and rotate to defend the point, have your roamers go there and cap mid, and simply rotate once the roamer full capped the point.

The biggest mistake you can make is try to fight on a point that is not yours when your build does not allow it. If you are a bunker, then fight on point. If you cannot withstand the AoE then kill the enemies FIRST, and then proceed to try to fight on point.

i have to agree with a lot of you, especially with the one who commented on my panic stealths. i often have off days but sometimes i have those “in the zone” moments like in this video (the last fight where my 1v4 turns into a 2v4)

and narkodx, i run signet because i solo stomp camps and moving from camp to camp faster is always a good thing. i actually use scorpion wire when im more in a combative mood.

(nother edit) that first video really doesn’t show off anything special :P and all your guy’s speculations are definately justified. i get sloppy often after roaming all day

That second video doesn’t help your case. In the necro fight alone you miss 4 CnDs. Not from them being smart or dodging, you just kind of miss them. Then you let arguably the slowest class in game get a ton of distance on you before finally taking them down. The end fight showcases once again the build’s strength of killing terrible players.

You have a lb ranger who in all likelihood was using his face on the keyboard, never even getting off a rapid fire or more than 1 or 2 autoattacks before going down (in a span of 30s+). There is a staff ele who is auto attacking in fire the entire time, instead of just throwing on aoes on it’s allies. People didn’t start dropping until the medi guard came in as well, so its hard to claim that was a result of you playing well.

If you want that extra 1%, just apply a stack of vulnerability. My point is, min-maxing is ridiculous and waste of time since you can never tell the difference during combat.

Speak for yourself. This is like saying that Exotic=Ascended because “meh, what are 5% more stats after all?”.

In a competitive environment, which is the one I prefer and play in, I want everything maxed. You maybe will not be able to tell the difference after 1 fight, but after 100 fights you can easily see the advantages of slight increases in your damage/survivability.

Moving up the balcony on Forest

The balcony overlooking mid on Forest, which skills can move up?

Any teleport with 900+ range. The exact spot you need to teleport is shown in the image below. Keep in mind you need to target the pinpointed area from the location I am standing in. If you are on the stairs, you won’t reach the top.

This is the list of skills that can bring you up there:
Thief: Steal, Infiltrator Signet, Shadowstep, Infiltrator Return, Infiltrator Arrow, Shadow Trap.
Mesmer: Blink
Guardian: Judge Intervention, Merciful Intervention
Necromancer: Flesh Wurm
Elementalist: Lightning Flash
…of course, the teleport skills that are “target” based (like Steal, Infiltrator Signet, Judge Intervention) need the person you are porting to to be at the location pinpointed in the image.

Do you ever have bad days on thief? (PvP)

It’s all up to the team honestly. I understand my mistakes and sometimes I admit that if I did something different we could have won a close match. Still, there are a lot of times in which your team comp is just terrible, or in which the players in your team wipe while outnumbering the enemy. Or when the close holder gets decapped 24/7, or when he just decides to sit on point and and do nothing the whole match. There are also times in which you have the hero who pushes far all the match and dies without even decapping the point, or those in which half your team gets destroyed by a turret engi because they don’t know how to handle them, and by the time you realise the reason you’re losing the game it’s usually too late to tell them.
There are also times in which people can’t read chat and just don’t want to listen to you.
All in all, soloq is a real PITA. I really don’t bother much though. I might rage at times but I usually cool off pretty quickly.
I think that most of the times it’s because I believe I have a pretty high MMR, so I get matched with people that I’m lucky if they are using proper “meta” builds.

I just had a game on foefire in which I said “1 close, I escort the guy at close, then go mid if they don’t push. Rest mid”. The result was, we had 1 zerker Ele push far and only 2 went mid, and they both got destroyed by a turret engi and a zerker Ranger. By the time I joined the mid fight, our Ele at far was already dead, and we had already one person down in the mid fight. They got mid soon afterward and then it became basically impossible to do anything as people kept zerging mid (instead of focusing on side points). Again, by the time I realised the reason we were behind, it was already too late as they were leading 300-100 or something. I just akitten after that.

I just tested this pretty exhaustively. The character screen rounds your critical damage, but the game does not – all the decimals you get from doing exact calculations are preserved in the real damage numbers.

So if you have, say, 252 Ferocity, which equals to 166.8% Critical Damage (in the sheet it’s shown as 167%), and your base attack should do 1000 damage, you will deal 1668 damage on a critical hit, am I right?

It is definitely rounding in the engine.

It’s not quite that – some of the points that don’t change the displayed crit % are wasted, and some of them are not. The game itself and the character sheet both round, but in different ways – the game rounds up, while the sheet rounds to the nearest.

Are you sure? When I look at the precision from my guard right now, he has 1387 precision = 26%. With -832 i get to that number, with -842 i get to 25%…

So when I have 49,51 critchance, it actually counts on full 50% (shown as 49%ingame)?

I’m very sure. I tested this pretty extensively after the NPE patch to make sure.

Your guard has 1387 precision = (1387-842)/2100 = 25.9524%, which the character screen rounds up to 26% (the nearest whole 1%)

For clarity, to get 50% base crit chance:

1882 precision translates to 49.52% crit chance. The game will display 50%. Your real crit chance will be 50%.

1881 precision translates to 49.48% crit chance. The game will display 49%. Your real crit chance will be 50%.

1872 precision translates to 49.05% crit chance. The game will display 49%. Your real crit chance will still be 50%.

For how they played their previous matches, TCG plays were WAAAAY funnier to watch. oRNG were just boring to see. I honestly don’t know if the DCs happened when TCG had the upper hand, as they both happened when oRNG had more points and higher score.
Frae on his thief really impressed me though. He did an AMAZING job at keeping Sizer at bay – something that Chozen totally failed to do (imho).
Still, good matches. I honestly think that TCG could have won foefire if they pushed Lord with more people on their first attempt instead of just Sizer and Texbi, but meh, too late for “ifs”.

Rabid Engi is cool but still has the same counters a Cele Rifle has, and will die faster to a D/D Ele and Shout Warrior. The only difference is that Cele Rifle loses to Rabid but meh, not really that meaningful.
Cele Rifle provides more team support in teamfights due to CC and better cleave on downeds.

Because you know…it’s always better to autenticate opinions with facts..i know vahn (Mrbig…the guy who opened this thread) and he definately has pvp experience…what about you?

I know people who have over 5 000 matches behind them since release and they still lack basic knowledge about professions, their skills and custom builds and possibilities.
I find it fantastic when those proclaimed experienced and knowledgeable players roll around only “meta world” which in fact is nothing beyond being a popular build which is used by majority, because it’s given right there to lazy people and work one way or another.

Let’s see who is the real lemming here

You’re incapable of making a simple list of pros and cons of such build. You simply repeat after some buthurt guy who shouted that this build is overpowered and needs to be nerfed. Obviously, the more people follow it the merrier, no? In fact there are even those who shared their bitter experience that they died to thumper and rocket turret alone while engineer was absent.
So yes. You’re sadly a lemming that follows some rage hype for that build meanwhile like any of those kids refuse to talk about that build weaknesses.
And that’s why I asked you to list pros and cons of that build, because I wanted to see if you can neutrally look at that build, and if I should take you seriously.
Condition pressure can be spared since it’s the basic weakness for every single clkitten for necromancer.
Reason why none of those “Turret OP, NERF” doesn’t want to talk about weaknesses behind that build is simply because they don’t know.
Why they don’t know?
Because they’re simple noobs, who got owned and all they can do is rage on forums with waterfall of tears which makes them unable to see anything else beyond pluses of that build.

Well on the other side i know NO people with less than 1000 ranked match able to properly discuss about game balance and flash news: in low level pvp turret engi is more meta than those so called meta builds cause everyone can play it due to the noskill needed in order to be effective with that.

Anyway turret engi is not a problem for me since i’m running a war spec that counters both cele engis and d/d eles atm and usually play with at least 2 or 3 ppl (There’s always someone to que with np)…if i see a turret engi i usually go straight for it and gank the crap out of the braindead guy (If you wanna try we can 1v1 on point), as i said problem is that turret engi is too rewarding for the 0 skill level needed ti play it, it’s even way more reterded than celestial rifle that still takes an “insane” amount of skill compared to turrets…sure celestial engis are also way more powerful in tpvp but those guys running turrets are just unable to play it…that’s why you will never see a top engi playing turrets…point is: If you know how to play celestial engi is far better…but for noskilled nabs that can’t play a proper build turrets are the way to go…and as a noskill spec it’s way too much rewarding, if you try playing shatter mesmer, thief, d/d ele or pretty much anything else just afking waiting for ai to get the job done liek you do on turret you’re gonna be a rallybot all day long. You can try by yourself anyway…go celestial rifle…if you’re decent you will be way way stronger than on turret…if you suck then it just proves that all your “skill” comes from ai and not from you. Simple as that.

Celestial rifle is actually way more difficult to play properly, because your bunkering capabilities are close to 0 – you need to be waaay better in terms of decision making to make it worth playing it. A Turret Engi can just decide on which point to stay, and go there for the whole match and if he is lucky enough to have an enemy player who likes to engage a 1v1 with him with a build not capable of doing so (and there are a lot of builds not suited to fight a turret engi) he will basically be able to win the match easily by himself, without literally doing anything.
I’ve played Celestial rifle for a while, and again, while not being hard to play mechanically (still harder than warrior though), it is kinda hard to play it in a way that will benefit your team. Necros, DD Eles, Warriors, mesmers, rangers… You can’t rely on crate for every 1v1 you engage on point!

What drives me crazy is the question if critchance and Ferocity round off/up.

They round up to the nearest 1% – also, remember that after the NPE went in that your base Precision is 926 now, so your crit chance is now (Precision – 842) / 2100.

Frustratingly, your character sheet rounds to the nearest 1%, not up, so the critical chance displayed there might not actually be what your real chance is in game.

… So it IS rounded? All the points in Precision that do not change the “%” displayed are wasted, then?

I love how people defend this build and say that you only need to “dodge the rocket turret” when the only spec that can effectively dodge the rocket turret 4k autos is an SD thief When I play DP (which is basically 100% of the times) , even when we outnumber the engi, I still get soooo much pressure from that turret alone that it forces me to use way more CDs than it should be required (especially when they like to glitch turrets in mid air so I can’t kill them with melee attacks).

In any case, with proper communication and/or good players, you can usually outrotate a team with one, or more, turret engis. The problem is when you have heroes in your team that spend all the time of the match 1v1ing them, usually with the result of dying without even without decapping the point.
In a team fight, turret engis are terrible, and you can really go kill the rocket turret and then they will be just a tanky, useless player with no team support and no damage (just leave them for last). If they place roots on a point and don’t move, simply outnumber the enemy team 5v4 or 4v3 in every teamfight and just forget going for the point they are holding.

I think the reward tracks are great! What we need is more tracks, specifically tracks with rewards that is only obtainable in pvp.

We do have them (Glorious Reward track). Shame that the armor is terribad though.

A p/d thief has no ready access to weakness or to burning yet deal quite nicely with an s/d thief. Heavy and continous condition pressure is a weakness of the s/d build.

As to s/d thief beating a condi necro any day I call bull mate. If a thief spends all his time on ports and evades to avoid incoming conditions they are not doing any damage. You have to close to melee range to fight.

You also seem to be under the impression that a necro using chill can not also inflict poison and weakness.

…. That’s because Spinal Shivers autoproc deals around 4k dmg, not because of the Chill.
Condi Necros don’t have any way to Condi Bomb a thief. They don’t have enough access to “covering” conditions (compared, to, say, engi) to prevent the “important conditions” from being cleansed. Also, Condi Necros have literally 0 sustain. If an SD is pressured, he can just kite no stop.
Really, I have the impression you don’t know how SD works.

I’m all for improving Necro viability, and nerfing this skill would plain wrong. Sure, it’s a skill that would make even the worst Necro shine (and sometimes I even get mad a lot when I die to a Lich Necro), but still, I think it’s needed.

Lel? What are you even saying? Chill on thief is useless mate. Thief can easily move through ports (not affected by chill) and dodges (not affected by chill). Plus, they can cleanse it very easily with the their healing skill. Really, if there is a condition that does not scare me at all when I play thief, that’s chill/cripple. Saying that it order to beat a thief you need Chill is plain wrong.

The only conditions that really annoys me when I play thief are Weakness, Poison and Burning. All these usually call for an immediate cleanse.

S/D thief beats condi necro any day.
Use BV from 900 range to proc the Reaper’s protection trait. Stunbreak with Infiltrator Signet the Nightmare Rune proc (if you already have a condi on you, otherwise you can wait it out). Use Shadowstep to stunbreak the Doom Fear, then wait a bit and use the port back to cleanse some condis. Use Withdraw to cleanse Cripple Chill, and manage your initiative well with the cleanse from Sword #2. Dodge the Reaper’s Mark and the dagger #5+2. Dodge Tainted Shackles last hit. Dodge Dark Path. If your engage went perfectly, you can even use Steal just for Interrupting his Healing Skill.

Really, I dont understand what makes you think Condi Necro is good against SD thieves

EDIT: POWER Necro is a waay worse opponent for an SD thief, because even with all those evades, skills like Axe#2, Dagger #2, DS#4 will keep hitting and will proc some Air/Fire sigils. A well placed Well will force the thief out of a Shadow Refuge. And the Spinal Shivers autoproc is deadly to most thieves. Just dont miss you Doom Fear and you’ll be okay.

I really like where engies are at the moment.

I’ve recently palyed with 2 friends who never touched PvP and one of them came to the game after months of inactivity. We were able to cheese win our way through pretty much everything with all the CC, turrets, crates, etc. It was disgusting to say the least.

By disgusting I mean people who suck against this condi, cc and damage overload. I mean it’s not like others can’t outplay that if they’re good since the game’s balanced and engie=any other class. Yes, that’s right. Obviously.

If anything I can confirm that the healing turret has too high of a cooldown which should be lowered with a possible addition of initial condi removal, because Consume Conditions removes all condis so it’s clearly unfair for engies.

They should just make the Drop of Healing Turret convert all Conditions into Boons, so they will finally have enough condi cleanse to survive in a 4v1

Any team with brains, a Mesmer and a Thief would just camp side points and get an ez win against that comp. Thief nullifies Ranger, Mesmer nukes the point holders without even being pressured. Throw in a D/D Ele and any other bunkerish specs (Warrior, Guardian, even Engi) and you get a gg.

To answer, they simply move the Ranger to wherever the Teef isn’t, put the Shotbow on the other point, and leave the pure turret engi mid. They can delay you at either point for a decent amount of time and just rotate to wherever they need to keep 2 points. The Pure Turret Engi could also leave turrets mid, go to wherever help is needed, drop a crate/CC a bit. gg.

I think you misread. The engi would leave the utility turrets at mid, and crate at wherever it’s needed. If you pay attention to the map you can just pop the Thumper active as soon as someone tries to decap. The exception of course is Graveyard, but that has the advantage of you being able to place turrets in annoying to reach spots, forcing any attackers to either kill them first or have to deal with them while taking the point.

I always wonder what kind of turret engis people are facing when they say they’re no good in organized play, being able to have a presence in multiple parts of the map is always good if you have something like a Shoutbow along.

…. you have no idea how much damage a Mesmer able to freecast is able to do on a Turret Engi.
The shoutbow can’t be everywhere everytime. He can support ONE fight, and even then, a single Mesmer deals enough damage to outdps his sustain on the engi.

I think you’ve never experienced first hand how deadly a thief-mes comp is. Only a full celestial team could hope to survive that kind of burst, not some decap sheets.

… if stomping (or rezzing) would make the guy taking action to go down it would be even more dumb to try doing it and failing.
A player MUST know when he is able to do (or not to do) something. When I play thief, even though I down people, I rarely attempt to stomp them UNLESS I absolutely need the stomp ASAP and I have a CD ready for that (Refuge, Shadowstep).
I am willing to use a CD for safestomping a guy if the situation really calls for it. But if I get the blame for “not stomping” when I know that attempting to stomp would just mean certain death for me, why should I even try? Moreover I usually use my ports for moving around the map so it’s very unlikely that I have them ready for a stomp.
Luckily I almost never get blamed for my decision making in unranked (cause I usually am the MVP of my team), but still, the few times it happened in the past were really annoying.

Don’t just blame people all over for the decisions they make.
Sure, sometimes you are right at blaming the guy who didnt move to rez you when the only guy cleaving your body is a Bunker Guardian…
Of course, the same applies for “can’t hold a node”. It is 100 times better to stay ALIVE than to go inside a point and die in seconds. I actually get even MORE mad when people say “I was the only one on point” when the point was full of AoEs. If you can’t stay on a point you must NOT stay on a point.
There are some situations that might push me to go and hold a point despite not being in the best position to do so, but still, your assumptions are totally wrong.
