All the buffs!
Well, nearly.

I run a shout guardian, so I’m constantly popping them off, even if I’m just running past people who are fighting something I don’t feel like engaging. If I happen to be running next to someone and have a staff on, I try to target the speed spell in a place they’ll end up running though – just because why not.

HoM exclusive ranger pets?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

interpol.2397

I would have a problem with it if the HoM pets were better than their counterparts, but they are either equal, or worse (lower health, iirc). I would also have a problem with it if not getting the pets interfered with gaining some sort of title, but they do not.
It does not affect the “profession mechanic” when you switch between 2 pets only for the combat aspect, and the HoM pets have better counterparts available.

You do not need the pets, you want the pets – just like a few days ago someone was complaining that they needed the HoM Heavy Mask skin because not having it broke the game.

Skill/button lag has moved to WvW....

I’ve had this start happening in WvW recently as well, and it’s gone beyond skills – I’ve even had weapon swap lag by 5-10sec, when only my party members were within draw distance (that I could see).

It can’t be anything new, as I don’t recall downloading any updates. Could be server-side issues? All I can do is confirm that I’ve only started noticing the problems recently, like you have. I don’t know of the inner workings.

T3 Cultural armors - why so expensive?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

interpol.2397

The stats on T3 cultural serve the same purpose as the picture icons do on accessories – none.
No one sees your Ascended earrings, so why is OP not up at arms that they have to “pay more” to get an item with an icon it doesn’t need? A generic earring shape would be fine, why are they charging us soooo much more than they would have without a custom icon?

It’s just there. If it wasn’t there, the price would not be lower.

Could ANet have done the same thing they did with HoM items and had no stats on T3s? Yes. But they didn’t do that. That really doesn’t change anything at all, just like Asc. rings having icons (even though they’re a purely stat item, and the icon is pretty much unnecessary beyond a generic placeholder) doesn’t change that they’re for stats and not for looks.

ANet never have a number, but it has been stated that they intend to raise the level cap in the future.
Of course, their stance on this can change, but they’ve said it very much outright that they’re Oh So Happy that the way they’ve made GW2 would allow for an increased cap, unlike lame and uncool GW1 and its disgusting horizontalness (last statement added out of facetiousness).

I am very much against a raised cap, but I think that if GW2 stays “good enough”, and the expansions are intriguing, I’ll power through it when it comes.
I hope they manage to rectify all the Ascended gear with more than just “lol now u hav skin” when the cap is raised, because I very much doubt people would like to grind up to BiS again.

Is March patch really going to fix Culling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: interpol.2397

interpol.2397

@Heijinks
It’s been stated that culling is mostly server-side. It just doesn’t send the information (player models, of example) to the client, so the specs are mostly irrelevant, since it can’t draw what isn’t being sent, and thus can’t lag out because of it.

I play on a laptop and I had no lag issues with WvW zergs months ago, when culling wasn’t so tight-fisted. Now I’m lagging out and having culling issues in the notoriously empty mid-level PvE zones, and that only started after the Feb update.

You don’t need a high-end computer to play GW2 at low-to-mid settings with no lag, as I’ve proven to myself prior to all these “fixes”. Even during the flood of people GW2 had on release, I had 0 problems.

Obviously, the majority of us don’t really know what ANet is actually doing when they make fixes, but with culling being removed, you can pretty much bank on there being more lag, but I see no reason why things should keep actually getting worse than they were on release.

Is March patch really going to fix Culling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: interpol.2397

interpol.2397

My concern is, whenever anyone from ANet talks about culling, all they talk about really is WvW. In previous updates, when they “tested” new culling systems, they tested them in WvW.
But now, it’s obviously starting to have impact in PvE as well. Honestly, I find that culling is less of an issue for me in WvW than in PvE, because NPCs and structures aren’t as affected and are not as numerous. And, while an enemy in WvW might not see me, just like I can’t see them, obviously the mobs in PvE will get aggroed even if I have no idea they’re actually there. In Orr especially, this can get really aggravating.

So I’m wondering, when they talk about eliminating culling, if it’ll get carried over to PvE at the same time as in WvW, or if for now this will be a WvW-only fix.

There should be a way for me to get the blue quaggan bagpack however I want – or there should at least be an equivalent alternative for people such as myself, not the exact same skin.
Maybe a yellow quaggan bagpack. People who spent money or gold will still have their blue one, but I will have a yellow one by doing whatever I want because I am a very special person.

interpol.2397

I really doubt that you’ll convince more people into playing WvW by trying to guilt them, and trivializing their preferred play-style. Condescension rarely gets you anywhere.

I used to be a PvE-only player until a month or so ago – WvW was just dull for me, because zergs were the last thing I equate to “fun”. Lately, I’ve been running it more because of my guild. We get parties of 2-5 people and flip camps and ninja towers with other small groups. We still zerg occasionally, but it’s much more tolerable when there’s banter over teamspeak.
I think, while there are many PvEers that will just never like WvW, there are also those who don’t like it because they haven’t ran it with the right group of people. But goading them about it certainly won’t achieve anything. Might make them want to do WvW even less, if they perceive that OP’s attitude is the prevalent one.

It basically is an “I don’t care” – he shuffled you off to somewhere completely irrelevant, where you won’t get anyone to address this problem.

Did you file this as a bug, or as something else?
Obviously, this shouldn’t have happened in the first place, but if it’s not fixed yet, I would post it on the bugs forum with screenshots, and refile the claim as a bug, because this can’t be anything but that.

Culling doesn’t have to do with your computer – it’s mostly server-side, and how much information is being sent from the server to the client is what impacts how many player models are being rendered.

What I’m seeing is
“Oh no! Now I can’t faceroll absolutely everything while churning out DPS anymore. I quit!”

I nearly laughed out loud when I read some claiming that warriors are no longer viable because of this nerf. How are you spec-ing yourself that you can’t tank anymore? “Tanks”, in a standard game, sacrifice DPS for survivability – they hold aggro, they are not the damage dealers. If you’re running with crit, you’re not going for a tanky build to begin with, and that’s the issue.
You can’t have both.

In the end, there are 3 options:
High survival + low DPS
Med survival + med DPS
Low survival + high DPS
Within these, you usually have a couple of build options you can use. If you have one class with High Survival + High DPS, while the others don’t (let’s face it, some don’t even have high DPS at all) that is not balance. That is being OP.

-- that’s just.. ugh. very.. i don’t even have a word for it. --

Well, it’s been 250 years since GW1, perhaps Cantha hasn’t remained strictly oriental then. But really, I’m so disappointed to know the reason for the great collapse. I’m asian myself, but help me understand.. Is it racist that the cultures were blended, thus the negative feedback?

It wasn’t strictly oriental to begin with anyway – Kurzick and Luxon were most certainly based on other cultures.

I think the issue goes back to the portrayal of East Asia in the media since…forever – all the cultures (and their food, religion, clothing, architecture, etc.) have a history of being jumbled together into one stereotype. I think Japan might be an exception, but certainly China, Korea, Vietnam, et al, have been portrayed as being the same thing. Now people and companies are, rightfully, trying to move away from this amalgamated image of Asia.

Now, I don’t agree with Cantha being shut down in GW2 (at least for the foreseeable future), but I can understand the issues it was facing; like how for example the names of Canthan characters were based on real names from a load of different countries, with the indication that all these people with these extremely different names were from the same culture.

I think Elona didn’t suffer from this problem so much, because there were distinct cultural lines drawn.

A Discussion of LFG Tools

After being in GW1 and using that party search, which was great, I don’t see ANet making a random grouping system, having made a lobby search previously.
Like others have mentioned, I would be extremely happy if they would let searchers and party-creators enter in the specifics of what they wanted to do, much like is shown in gw2lfg – I could see it being set up similarly to TP search.

I don’t remember having many negative experiences in the GW1 party searches, since you chose who got to join to fit the party best; sure there were always calls for LF MONK, and I have a feeling that rangers and engis might take longer to find groups (though that’s more of a class balance issue – there are reasons for the discrimination), but it was very non-confrontational, since you knew what you were getting.
There will always be grouches and trolls and flakes in all games, of course, so getting a PUG together isn’t always the best choice, but I’m an advocate for the Lobby Search system – it made my time in GW way more pleasant.

Another issue for not seeing people could also actually be culling – at least for places like LA. You just don’t see people until you’re nearly sitting on top of them sometimes, because they don’t render.

Whenever I log into GW nowadays, I keep automatically pressing to roll and jump.

What I miss the most are a working LFG tool, rangers without pets, and story-line missions that encouraged team-building.
But, as others have already said, GW2 still has many more moons before we can really compare it to GW. Right about now, GW is at a place where no new content will be created (months ago, really, if you consider Winds of Change as the last new content add); this is where we should take a snapshot, and compare the content of GW2, say, 3 years from now, to the GW of today. I doubt it would even take GW2 that long to surpass GW in total content. Heck, compare GW2 of today to GW1 just before the addition of Factions, and I think there are still more things to do.

Don’t get me wrong, GW is way more polished than GW2, and right now I think much more fondly for the original than the “sequel”, but it’s obvious that the devs’ ability to add new content is way greater in 2 than in 1.

Guild Mission Concerns

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: interpol.2397

interpol.2397

First, let me make this perfectly clear:

No one is stomping their foot.

No one is digging in their heels.

We have paid the cost over the years. Being forced out of some games where the devs have made a sudden design decision to punish small guilds under 10 people. It was a deliberate, published decision. And we voted with our feet. We had fun. The game was deliberately changed. We left. End of story.

My response was to those players who have a knee-jerk (uninformed/narrow) perception that the obvious answer is “merge”, or “learn to grow”. There are reasons we keep our guild limited, some which started out with protecting guildmates. It is our choice. We accept full responsibility.

That does not mean we are anti-social. Like I said, we have participated in and also led raids of various nature (PvE, raid, and PvP). We have adapted. And continue to do so.

There is a concern about small guild participation, and that is being voiced by my guild and others.

Accusing people of being “narrow-minded” and going on their knee-jerk reactions is a bit presumptuous, especially when the suggestions follow a logical train of thought.

Don’t have enough people to do something? Find more people. Be it from being in an alliance (a point which you decided to ignore, by the way), or having membership in a larger guild, while keeping your own, for just such situations where you need to tap into a network of more people.
I’m just saying that if having 1 small guild with no alliance is hurting more than it’s helping, maybe it would be a good idea to be open-minded (as opposed to narrow/uninformed/knee-jerk) toward additionally participating in larger groups, as well as being in your own.

Anyhow, I do agree that all this panic is a bit premature; the details do seem to imply that smaller-scale guild missions will be available, and that outsiders would be able to join in on the open-world portions, which should help out the smaller guilds. We’ll have to wait and see, and it’s not going to be a very long wait.

Guild Mission Concerns

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: interpol.2397

interpol.2397

What would you call a group of 4 people that have been together for over 20 years, and gaming online for over a dozen?

That is our guild. It is a guild. It has been through multiple MMO’s at that size. We have been in games with in-game mechanics that support alliances, and games where we managed to form alliances through outside abilities.

We have led server wide raids on an on-going basis for years. We have participated with large outdoor raids, in RvR, WvW, doing explorables (all except one path in one dungeon which demands 5).We have added folks to our group to take through dungeon runs when nobody wanted that particular class.

I know from postings out here and on other forums, there are many similar guilds.

Pardon me for responding, but the cliche “just merge” demonstrates the same level of insight as “learn to play” or “you’re playing wrong”.

You say your group has joined alliances before whether in-game functions allowed it or not – so what’s stopping you now? (the answer is nothing, by the way; my guild had such an alliance)

You don’t have to merge. In GW2 you can keep your guild, but also join another. And another. And another.

You claim that you’re so benevolent, graciously letting people into your dungeon group; but you’re not so benevolent as to accept people not part of your in-club into your guild? You can let people into your guild to have more players without compromising your friendship.

This is absolutely your decision, but every choice has an opportunity cost, and you must decide whether it’s worth it or not.
If it ends up not being worth it to be part of a smaller guild, then you have to adapt, not stomp your foot and stubbornly dig in your heels, or live with keeping your tiny group and not being able to manage the content.

Will we see some improvements in the UI, in terms of flexibility?

Colin: Right now there’s really not very much at all that we can do with the UI, like resizable elements or anything, so, hopefully, at some point we can tackle that.

I wanted to finish my personal story as soon as I could, just to get rid of that green arrow on the screen. Are there any plans to let us hide UI elements?

Colin: Yeah, I think the UI team has something about it so that we can consolidate that whole right side of the screen, make it easier to manage and use. That’s still a long ways off, cause it would take huge engineering [...] to pull off. We do want to have that daily reminder up there too.

There’s a careful balance in the UI, because some of that stuff is the “I don’t know how to play this game, but there’s something telling me what I should be doing right now”, so we don’t want people to be able to get rid of something like that, because suddenly they would have no idea what they should be doing. There’s that very careful balance - there’s enough for advanced players to be able to do things without noobs getting totally lost.

http://dragonseason.com/Front/tabid/124/EntryId/210/Lunch-with-Colin-Johanson.aspx

So, you can take that as nothing will be done in the near future.

I can totally see this happening. The dedicated WvWers will be stuck in the towers, maybe on a rotation, being bored and doing skritt-all for most of the time, missing out on drops and badges, while zergers keep zerging. Seems perfectly fair, and balanced toward strategic play /sarcasm

I know ANet is trying to encourage people to think tactically with the Orange Sword removal, but like you, I suspect that it will only lead to more zerging (now stealth) in slightly smaller groups.

Well, if you’re looking to complete areas in general, it is inevitable that you will be at a higher than recommended level for some of them – you’ll get to lvl80 before you clear all the zones. In the end, it’s up to you. I ran around doing all the low level areas first before moving on to the next tier, but when I wanted a bit more challenge, I went and played a zone where I was under-leveled.

It’s not advisable or inadvisable. Do what you like; I know some people save race-specific low level zones for their alts, so that they get a sense of discovery when they play, instead of just rerunning a zone they’ve already done.

If it feels too tedious to you, then do higher zones.

I don’t think that NCsoft is “forbidding” Cantha because of B&S – for one, the audiences are pretty different. B&S is a more…. mature game, if only because of the armors. It’s one of those that encourages people to make their (female) character as naked as possible, along the lines of a TERA visual style. The revealing armors are one of the major selling points of the game, as far as I’ve seen.

Of course it does also feature a “downed system”.
I wonder where I’ve seen that before……………

Anyhow, GW2 is small potatoes in Asia, which is the main market of B&S, so a Canthan expansion to a game the Asian market isn’t interested in is hardly any sort of competition.

@ donaga – that’s kind of irrelevant. When an expansion comes out (could be in a year, could be in ten, idek), a video game trailer about the video game is what OP is suggesting. Not making a trailer to advertize your upcoming game is foolish.

I’ve been on a number of forums, and on many of them if the page is refreshed, or you backspace to it (ie: something went wrong during post submission, and you have to go back to the previous page), the unposted writing in the textbox does not disappear, so you would actually get a chance to resubmit it.

I can’t count the times where I’ve tried to post on this forum, and something goes wrong, and when I go back to the page my text is gone. At that point I just don’t bother adding to the discussion, because I would have to retype everything.

I understand that this is not a bug, but is it possible to have this, with the way the forum is set up?

I was on just a couple of hours ago, so I’m assuming that it’s a recent server issue on their end.
Nothing to worry about, it’ll likely be back before the end of the day – at least that’s how these things usually go.

I have a feeling that it has something to do with the new culling system that has been implemented. Strangely enough, before the patch I had more players rendered at a greater distance in my FOV, but the zone was less laggy than it is now, with fewer character models up.

I remember a thread like this earlier this week.
An ANet member came in and said that they are NOT working on this.

Game is running out of things to do

To actually be able to get that many hours of gameplay and only just run out of things to do is nearly unheard of in games. To put it in perspective, many new single-player games barely have 24h of content – Dishonored can be played through in under 6hrs.

I’m really just flabbergasted, OP. It’s not been 6 months since release, and there was enough in the game to occupy you for 1800 hours. Doing a quick calculation, that’s approx 9h/day if you played every single day (head-start excluded). I don’t understand how you expect ANet to keep up with you, to be quite frank.
I think if GW2 was able to keep you occupied for that long over 190-some days, it’s a successful purchase, and if you’re out of things to do (and are really set against PvP in all forms), I recommend taking a break until there are things to do again.

You cannot reasonably expect there to be enough content in a game to keep you occupied for 2000 hours over the course of 6 months.

How are you qualifying it as an exploit, though?
Is it a skill that is working in a way that it should not be able to – or are they just creatively using a skill within its description’s parameters?

If it’s a bug in the skill, I would suggest bringing up in the bugs forum as well (or sending in a ticket, if you don’t want people to learn about this exploit).
