Kill Switch in Sylvari? [Spoiler]

There have been indications of this in the TA explorable dungeon stories. Both TA up and TA Forward feature Nightmare courtiers that become crazy as they fight for power. Leurant, one of the courtiers, said it best in the TA Forward Dungeon path, “The first lesson in war is to wipe out your enemy. And that includes generals and foot soldiers alike.” Next time you’re in the dungeon, watch the scenes involving Fyonna and Vevina (TA up path) and Leurant and Fyonna (TA forward path). Their actions are similar to Aerin’s actions.

It could be that power to a Sylvari is like hormones to humans. In real life, teens can become aggressive or emotional when they enter puberty. Oftentimes, there is a human mentor that can guide them through that stage of life. When there is no mentor, the teen can easily become a delinquent. Sylvari, on the other hand, don’t have any mentors that can help them when they’re exposed to power. Sadly, the Pale Tree herself recently admitted to not having enough life experience, so she’s no help in this situation. When you have time, have your Sylvari character go to the Pale Tree and ask her about the elder dragons.

This is definitely a hardware problem.

Not at all. This is definetely just a bad example dev optimization.

I play on a 5 years old pc.

My gf is playing on 1 years old msi high end laptop that is like 5x my pc.

Usually msi own my pc in every single content of gw2.

Except dry top where without any reason i stay around 30 fps and my gf drop to 8.

That’s not hardware issue, that is NOT having optimizate stuff properly on some hardware setting\fx cards

I should of clarified that my advice was for people with low end or average PCs.

The average person usually play MMOs on low end PCs. You know, the kind of comptuer that runs for $700 or less. If you can afford the high end stuff that costs $1000 or more, then you won’t need to upgrade as often. You can also overclock a high end PC, but overclocking can damage a low end computer. I know for a fact that Hewlett Packard (HP) doesn’t design their computers’ motherboards for overclocking. GW2 runs on my HP computer. When I called them with questions about upgrading the hardware, the company recently warned me not to overclock.

Since the late 1990s, my practice has been to buy PCs on sale then upgrade them over the next few years. It gives me the opportunity to learn how to build and fix PCs. That’s how I know this stuff.

Sure there may be some issues with the game, but that isn’t something we can control. Yeah we can complain on the forums, but if the issue is with the computer, no amount of patches is going to fix a player’s hardware problem.

It’s also no secret that MMOs always have changing requirements esp. graphics requirements. Even WOW has changing requirements with each new expansion. There are going to be times when players have to upgrade their hardware.

I’m able to play this game at 20 fps, but it’s at the lowest settings. It doesn’t look good at the lowest graphics settings. In my case, I’m just going to have to invest in a new card and max out my computer’s RAM to 16 GB. I’m only encouraging others who have similar problems to consider investing in new hardware as needed.

This is definitely a hardware problem. Usually that means it’s time for a new graphics card. I’m in the same boat as you. My FPS is 20 on the new map, and my 3 year old computer is using a Radeon HD 5450 card. In other parts of the game my FPS is 30 to 45 (including WvW ).

If your computer is more than 2 years old, you will need to upgrade the graphics card to play this game. Contact your PC’s manufacturer for suggestions and/or go to websites like Tom’s Hardware forums (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/) for advice.

If you are using a Hewlett Packard computer, you can try to get advice from the official forums: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/

Other possible problems:

1) Power supply unit (PSU) is not giving enough juice to the graphics card or the PSU is giving up. This problem happened to me a month ago, and it caused my FPS to drop from 30 fps to 5 fps before the PSU died.

If you bought your computer at a store, you may need to change out the PSU. Most computer manufacturers in the United States use a 300 watt PSU which isn’t enough power for a really good graphics card. Do some online research on your graphics card and find out its Minimum System Power Requirement. If you’re low on money, a good gaming PSU is the Corsair CX series. I have the Corsair CX 430 on my computer and it helped boost my FPS. My new PSU costed $39 on Amazon.com

2) Your computer is running too hot. Heat and/or dust can affect your computer’s performance.

To find out if your computer has a heat problem, download an open source program called SpeedFan and run it on your machine as you play GW2. Go to http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php and click on SpeedFan 4.49 (highlighted in blue) to download the program.

FYI— When you use the Speed Fan program, a green checkmark indicates normal temperature. Blue down arrow indicates cooler temperature. Red up arrow indicates that the temperature is rising. The Fire Symbol means that some parts of your computer are running really hot. Obviously, it’s bad to get the Fire symbol on anything other than the GPU (graphic card). That usually means that you’ll need to dust the inside of your comptuer with a can of compressed air (available at Wal-Mart or your local computer store) . FYI — Don’t ever open the PSU to dust it. Think of it like an Asuran golem energy core. You can get shocked or eletrocuted if you open it up. It’s best to leave the PSU alone and just dust the other parts of the computer with air (like the heat sink, motherboard, and the graphics card).

GW2 causes most graphics cards to run really hot. The only time you should be worried for the GPU is if the temperature is getting close to the card’s Maximum GPU temperature. You’ll need to do some research on your graphics card to find out its Maximum GPU Temperature.

3) You don’t have enough RAM. Memory can also affect FPS as well as the computer’s processing speed. Max out your computer’s RAM. If you aren’t sure how much RAM to add to the computer, contact your computer’s manufacturer.

4) Your computer’s motherboard might be giving up, or it might be too old. This is a worst case scenario. If it happens to you, it’s best to buy a new computer or build a new one.

Asura spotted in RL China!

kta.6502

THIS JUST IN: Recently a few real-life Chinese campers happened upon a naked Asura wandering around in the forests. How the poor little guy managed to travel from Tyria to Earth remains a mystery. The human campers ran back home, reported their finding online, and started a huge controversy in mainland China. It even started a new conspiracy theory: The Chinese government was in league with the alien being. Neither the Inquest nor the Colleges have claim to recognize the lost individual.

What the campers didn’t know: A film crew was filming a commercial for Guild Wars 2.

You can read more about it here:

I’m also having the same problem. The rubberbanding started last night after 10pm (Pacific Time). I have the Comcast Extreme 50 internet connection. *I’ve already contacted Comcast about the internet connection, but there was nothing wrong on their end. I ran a test on Pingtest.net and here are my results when I contact comcast’s ip in lynnwood, WA, USA:

Packet Loss: 0%
Ping: 15 ms
Jitter: 4ms

FYI : I live in Seattle, WA USA
I currently have 40 mbps internet connection.

I can access other parts of the Internet without problems. The rubber banding (and extreme lag) is in Guild Wars 2 only. It’s making every part of the game unplayable.

My computer’s specs:

Model: Hewlett Packard HPE – 400y
CPU: Amd Phenom II x4 945
GPU: Amd Radeon HD 5450
2TB HDD (with 1.5 TB available space)
8 GB Ram

Please fix the lag & rubberbanding! I want to play the game!

YAY! FINALLY! SOMETHING FOR US STORY-LOVERS!

((ahem!))

I’m looking forward to the Story Journals as well. I’ve been waiting for an extension to the PS for a while. The Sylvari PS is my favorite storyline, and I want to know what happens to the Sylvari PCs. I’m curious to know if there will be a rivalry / conflict between Trahearne and the PCs. I hope my Order of Whispers Sylvari PC gets a chance to get back at fern boy for stealing the spotlight during the Zhaitan storyline.

The best parts: We can all play the game at our own pace AND we get more acheivements. YAY!

I don’t mind paying the 200 gems for past episodes either. That’s like $2.50 USD. That’s cheaper than a movie rental from Amazon.com (which is $3.99 -$5.99 USD). I’d rather spend money on games than on movies any day.

Thank you for the upcoming update, Anet!

I do have a question:

Will there be both solo and group events in each episode?

Finally, Anet please add LS Season 1 to the Story Journal when you can. I would like to play all the pre-Twilight Assault updates such as Flame & Frost and the Queen’s Jubilee.

Dcd during Teq and no chests

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

kta.6502

I’ve had it happenen many times.
You don’t get the chest if you dc at the end.
I think you can see the chest on the mini map but its not there to loot.
Yes I was in right server every time.

Looks like I’m not the only person with this problem.

What’s really frustrating is that I spent an hour preparing for the Teq event on each day. Then I fought Teq with everyone else from beginning to end. I was in the zerg, frying the dragon with my Engie flamethrower. I never even died during the battle or battery phases (Yes, I’m that good.). Then I dcd just before Teq goes down, and I never got my loot. Like Beleth, I saw the mini chest, but I didn’t get anything.

In my case, both Teq runs were initiated by my guild on the TC server.

On the Saturday run, I returned to the shard that I dcd in. On the Sunday run, I was sent to another shard when I logged back in. I had to have my guildies pull me into their shard. The fact that this issue happened twice this last week is the reason why I’m posting a bug report on here.

This situation is not okay. I understand that Anet probably programmed the game like this to avoid giving stuff to AFKers. It’s just that hard-working, honest players shouldn’t be denied their rewards because they dcd.

I kinda like the PC not being the central heroe/heroine of the story or the chosen one.

And I like the actual NPCs… well I love Kas, Jory and Taimi. Rox is kinda cool too. I don’t remember the others… but I missed a lot of story thanks to the temporary content aka living world.

I understand. I know the GW2 community is split in half on this one. One possible solution to solve this is to give the players the choice between being the hero character or being a sidekick.

As a customer, I don’t purchase games that have the PC as a non-heroic person. It’s too much like real life. I live as a normal human in RL, so why would I want to RP as one?

I also enjoy hero stories. That’s why I buy RPGs (esp. JRpgs). GW2 was originally advertised as a hero story via official trailers. The devs even said that the focus would be on the PCs. When I discovered that Traherne stole my character’s storyline, I felt as if I had wasted $40 on the game. It was misleading advertisement. If I had known that my character was going to be a sidekick, I would of never purchased the game. Alot of the fault lies with Anet and NCSoft for not advertising the game correctly. BTW, in the United States, it is a violation of Federal and Washington State business law to advertise a product in one way and then give the customer a totally different product. That’s why fans like myself have spent time pointing out the game’s problems to both companies in hopes that they will give us what they promised in the first place.

It’s seems as if Anet is working to fix the problems since one of the devs did say in-game that all the LS 2 stuff is permanent. It indicates that the devs really did read the various comments on the forums about LS 1. I hope LS 2 is successful.

What Living World(TM) Should REALLY be about

in Living World

Posted by: kta.6502

kta.6502

It should not be 100% about developer-made story.

We need that of course, to extend the lore of the game, but this is an MMO. Not a single player game. You cannot make a meaningful story in this game as you can in a single player game, where it really captivates the player on a personal level. Here, everyone experiences the same thing and everyone is the hero, the effect of the narrative is not as powerful.

50% of the Living world should be about the developer-made content, but the other 50% should be about players dictating the course of history – most importantly, the guilds.

The living world should be granting guilds positions of power, making them struggle against each other with combat, politics (influencing players), getting votes, conquering temporary (but not so temporary) things and so on. Voting for kiel vs gnash was on the right path – but it was too little. Voting is not enough. Bring guild wars back to Guild Wars.

MMOs have been corrupted into becoming glorified level up/get loot but online games, and they make absolutely NO use of the multiplayer features they actually have. Playing a single player game together isn’t enough, give us players dominance over the board of the game.

Make it happen anet

No. NO! Oh H*** NO! F** NO!

It hard enough having to be in a guild to get access to content like guild rush. I don’t want any GW content to be locked behind a “Guild Only” barrier. Guilds are prone to drama and problems. Sometimes, guild culture change and people are forced to leave. Sometimes, people get g-kicked for petty things. Don’t believe me? Read the WoW Drama Mama articles at http://wow.joystiq.com/category/drama-mamas/

There’s alot of crazy stuff that happens in guilds no matter what game a person chooses to play.

I don’t care if this game is called Guild Wars. I just want to have access to the game and be able to play the game, guild or no guild. It takes alot of time to find the right guild.

BTW, I’m currently part of a large guild on the TC Server.

Am I the only one...

…The doesn’t trust Caithe at all? And I say this as a diehard Sylvari player. All the little hints that get dropped, her past, the way she carries herself, and the mother of them all, the Vision of Orr, all add up.

It well and truly irks me that there’s no way to call her on being completely compromised and untrustworthy. Sure, she may be innocent, and I want to think that, but wartime is no time for idealism. The vision was something that “could” happen, but may or may not, I’ll grant that. But quite frankly anyone even giving passing thought to flipping sides at this juncture shouldn’t be privy to the details of whats going on. Especially with the Nightmare Court, in regards to Caithe.

I trust her about as far as my character could throw Zhaitan. You’re either in the war and on the right side %100 or you’re not, and neither the player character nor all of Tyria has time for anyone under that percentage. It’s either the firing line or a cell and under investigation, in my book.

…But maybe all this is just me going for the Order of Whispers first and foremost.

This goes hand in hand with my general contempt to Destiny’s Edge, bat at least with the others it’s a reaction to their general childishness rather than being suspect.

So. Anyone else feel even somewhat the same?

No, you’re not alone. I think that Caithe is “compromised” as well. She comes across to me as borderline Nightmare or even a Court spy who disguises themselves very well. I wouldn’t even be surprised if she is still seeing Faolain. I realize that Caithe dumps Faolain in the TA dungeon story, but she is still with Faolain deep in her heart. I know from personal experience that close relationships like this don’t go away in group oriented societies like the Sylvari.

My hope is that Caithe will return in future updates and that Anet will continue her story. I think her storyline is the best NPC storyline in the game.

I also think that the Order of Whispers concerns about all of the Firstborn Sylvari are well founded. There are some secrets in the Grove that I hope the Anet writers include in their story.

let's not judge before it happens..

in Living World

Posted by: kta.6502

kta.6502

I’m the first person to jump on the writers how bad they are doing their job. But for the next living story let’s give them a chance to prove they are not fresh out of some community college or home schooled writing class. Sure they made some ridiculously simple and glaring mistakes any rookie would avoid but I have hope.

IF they deliver some boring story then unleash hell, go broadside and open all barrels. But until then I say give them a chance to prove that the first chapter was more of a lesson than their best attempt.

TL;DR – give them a chance…

Anet might not be to blame for the LS content. Keep in mind that NCSoft might be the real villain here. When I participated in the WildStar beta, I realized that it had the same problems as GW2: a flat storyline and the PCs are forced to rush from event to event (Just like Living Story Season 1). Even the Explorer path is too similar to GW2. *There is a very good chance that inexperienced folks in NCSoft are calling the shots when it comes to content in GW2. *

As a long time Guild Wars fan, NCSoft is on their last legs with me. If LS Season 2 fails, then I just won’t buy any games from NCSoft in the future due to the fact that they interfere too much with developers, animators, and writers. Video games cost money for us consumers ($20 – $60 in the U.S.). When a game doesn’t deliver, I won’t purchase the sequel. As a consumer, I buy RPGs for the storyline and interesting gameplay. Anet has the gameplay part down. We just need a really good storyline to act as icing on the cake. The story doesn’t have to be complicated or extremely thought provoking. The LS 2 story just has to have the following:

the PCs as the main characters and the heroes of the story. This is non-negotiable.

— NPCs can’t steal the PC’s spotlight. If the NPCs dare steal the spotlight, they have to be punished in some way (i.e. get overwhelmed by the bad guys, get themselves killed, gets their power taken away, etc.)

— Believable NPCs. Give me a reason to care about the PC’s sidekicks and minions.

— Keep the story in-game. No dev-created fanfics and important lore on other sites like Facebook, the blog, Flickr, etc. As an RPG, all GW2 Lore and story needs to be in-game. Period.

FYI— I will still keep playing GW2 no matter what. I bought the game last October and I like my main character. I’ve also found good people via this game. If Living Story 2 fails, I just won’t buy other games from NCSoft (including WildStar).

LS Season 2 Preview!

in Living World

Posted by: kta.6502

kta.6502

Not much of a preview. Been there since launch right? At the very least a long time, even before Scarlet. Also there are tons of points across the game that could preview future content like this does, and technically could mean they are open possibilities for season 2 as well.

That being said, based on conversations from the sister, we could easily see how this could be used for the next season, yes. Breaking news though? No.

So? All that means is that Anet probably has the entire GW2 story planned out well in advance.

So why don’t they churn out the updates? During Season 1, the story was rushed too much and in dire need of editing. It could be that Anet wants to be a bit more careful after getting so much negative criticism on the forums. I hope they take their time with the story. We need better quality updates than what we’ve received for the past 16 months.

The fact that the stories match and that the White Mantle are mentioned means that Anet will most likely build on what they have unlike Season 1.

LS Season 2 Preview!

in Living World

Posted by: kta.6502

kta.6502

Heads up!

Earlier today, I was in Brisban Wildlands to work on map completion, and I discovered that there is LS Season 2 preview info on the map. You can find it at the following locations:

  • East of Gallowfields Waypoint, there is a place called Seenan’s Bandits. It is a fort. Before Ivy, the NPC, sends you on the renown heart mission, she tells the PC that there will be an upcoming Seraph assault against the bandits soon. That is similar to the story we hear from Majory’s sister at the end of LS Season 1. Once your PC finishes the renown heart, you’ll get info regarding the White Mantle.*
  • At Triforge Point Waypoint, your PC will meet a Sylvari named Valiant Mathair, another Renown Heart NPC. If you talk to him, he’ll mention about a new alliance between Inquest, the Bandits, and the Nightmare Court. Sound familiar? Hmm… This reminds me of a particular LS Season 1 character who created weird evil alliances (such as getting the krait to team up with the Nightmare Court to create the Toxic Alliance).

There is a very good chance that we might see more of Mathair during LS Season 2. His Wyld Hunt is to take down the new alliance, and he’s going to need our help. Doesn’t that sound like a particular NPC we met in the Personal Story?

For those who can’t access the area or who are too lazy to go check it out themselves, there are screenshots below that have the info.

For the GW2 Newbies:

At the end of Living Story Season 1 (LS 1), the PCs defeated the infamous Sylvari Engineer / Genius known as Scarlet Briar, who had terrorized all of Tyria for the past year and a half. Scarlet is the reason that Lion’s Arch (LA) is currently in ruins. There is currently no sign that LA will be rebuilt soon due to the damage from the miasma (toxic swamp fumes), council politics, and bad memories. Some NPCs have become racists against Sylvari because of Scarlet’s actions. We also found out that the Seraph will be mounting an assault against the bandits in Brisban Wildlands. The Pact (mentioned in the Personal Story) will also be joining the PCs since Scarlet’s final experiment woke up the Jungle dragon, Mordremoth.

How Mega Server affects people w/o guilds?

I’m really curious about this.

Folks go in and out of guilds all the time. In many other games, if you leave a guild, there is a good chance to be recruited into another guild in-game.

The new GW2 Mega Server is so experimental that there is no way to know how newer players are affected.

If anyone is willing to share their experiences, please post them here.

Here is the final Mordremoth fight in comic form.

This clearly isn’t just me pasting pictures and text over an old comic of Zhaitan that I made weeks ago.

Edit: The original – https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/escape/Treahearne-where-is-he/first#post3672837

Ummmmm, yeah was kinda funny until you got to Treahearne. I don’t get why everyone says he took credit for everything, during the epilogue bit after you kill Zhaitan, he CLEARLY states that he wish he could’ve been there to see Zhaitan finally be defeated, he never once took credit for killing the dragon. All he did was cleanse Orr. Pay more attention to the story before going and making empty accusations about things that didn’t actually happen.

The damage was done after the PC and Trahearne start on their quest. During the Forging the Pact story step, the NPCs gives Trahearne credit for saving them when it is the PC who fights Dzhudin Stormbreak. Trahearne gets knocked out during the fight because he’s such a lousy fighter. When he’s rezzed at the end of the story step, Trahearne never refutes the NPCs’ statements and give credit to the PC. That’s what made alot of players very angry, and in the western countries this is the mark of a bad-guy-in-the-making. Alot of people have thought that he could eventually turn into a bad guy. It hasn’t happened yet, but people are expecting this.

The apologies that Trahearne makes at the end of the PS are a band-aid on a deep wound. The damage is already done. People are only reacting to Trahearne in the same way that they would react to anyone who takes credit for something they didn’t do.

Fun fact: Trahearne is mean with Order of Whispers and Vigil characters. With the Priory PCs, he’s all sweety-sweety. Yeah, the plant is biased.

What zhaitain should of been is you do Arah to get attuned and then go fight Zhaitan with 500+ other players I hope they learn there lesson and while where at it trahearne needs to die or become bad.

I said the same thing in my post “Tension, Conflict, and other Things the LS needs” (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/lwd/Tension-Conflict-and-other-things-LS-Needs/first#post3837681), and I quote…

Ending this game with Zhaitan’s final defeat will help the story come full circle and be the perfect closure to GW2. One possible way to defeat this guy: Our heroes could go through the Rite of Acension quests to take this dragon down. Again, I’m expecting the second battle with Zhaitan to be the final one.”

i think arena net is genius for repeating this.
pressing 2 was just too epic. especially if you synced up your 2 pressing to the background music

You’re confusing pressing 2 with pressing 1. One doesn’t simply “press 2”, they hold down 2. Big difference.

Make the Next Living Story Darker

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

kta.6502

I was always unable to get fully invested in the living story because it was a bit too “unserious” for me. Scarlet (corrected!), while she had her charms was a just a little too cute and chit chatty. How about a serious threat? Zhaitan could be that but he’s more like a villain in absentia.

How about a Dark Lord with a scary name or title like the “Mordsith” (borrowing from SWOT, sorry!). We need to see him turn Tyria dark, impale people and leave them for all to see, kill a couple of people we love (Scarlet make a joke of Farrow, by cooking him and leaving him in his undies).

In short, make him evil. Make him scary. Give me a reason to fear the night. Remember you song “Fear not this night”? Make it come alive. Live to the tune of that. Give us despair, bleakness, oppress our hearts. Make the demonic come alive.

Corrupt Tyria, fill it with the sounds of shrieking wraiths in pain (not lumenescent will—o-the-wisps mind you).

Give us more single instance living story dungeons to make us afraid and isolate us from our friends. We want to feel heroic at the end of the day, that’s why we role play. It’s hard to feel heroic against comedic villains.

Do that, and I will get more involved in the living story.

You don’t always need darkness to create a scary villain. They just need to be personally involved in the hero’s life.Villains that are far away aren’t as scary as villains that are close by. Let’s take a look at a some examples from Lord of the Rings:

Sauron (aka The Necromancer)— He’s that big ugly eye that stays on top of his tower for the entire story. His distance keeps him from getting personally involved in the heroes’ lives. (Well, he attacks the heroes via Saruman, but that diminishes Sauron’s potential as a bad guy)

Saruman — The wizard who gives the Fellowship trouble. He’s scary because he constantly tries to harm the heroes. Example: When he finds out that a hobbit has the ring, he orders his minions to capture all hobbits. That puts Merry, Pippin, Frodo, & Sam in alot of danger

Gollum (aka Smeagol) — He befriends and helps the hero, Frodo, in order to get the ring for himself. During the course of the story, there was a chance he could turn on the good guys at any time.

The One Ring — The ring that Frodo must carry all the way to Mt. Doom. This item purposely placed Frodo in danger during the course of LOTR. It’s an object that has a mind of its own, and it often affected Frodo’s mind.

Now back to GW2. How does this apply to the game?

Scarlet’s problem was that she never got into the personal lives of the heroes (esp. the Sylvari PCs). She was just another mad scientist who caused chaos and destruction. She suffered from “Too Evil for you” syndrome. That’s why it was easy to write her off as a non-threat. It’s also the reason that the Captain’s Council didn’t do anything to protect Lion’s Arch.

What GW2 needs is a believable, scary bad guy (or gal —- gotta promote equal opportunity, you know!)

Here’s a great article that talks about writing villians in alot more detail:

For me, she is more like unrefined diamond, that lost its chance to shine. Anet killed her with bad writing. But, as I said, there is still a possibility of redemption. Her Ghost might shine a little. It would be Redemption on both sides. In game and in writing.

That’s what I’m hoping for too! I want to see Scarlet again as a spirit advisor in the mists and/or the Dream.

The incoming updates look promising.

You’re very correct Nage, people have no patience. Many don’t even seem to know what it is anymore. They forget that Rome was not built in a day. The same goes for any form of entertainment, video games especially.

I wish people had more patience and accepted the game as it is. World of Warcraft started small before becoming the MMO giant that it is today. Anyone here remember WoW vanilla? I don’t remember Blizzard catering to every complainer who screamed about leaving whenever there was something in the game they didn’t like. What Blizzard did was bid the complainer goodbye while keeping with their vision of the game, and their devs worked together as a group. I hope Anet does the same.

WoW also had its problems back in the day. I’m old enough to remember when people complained about the raids when Warcraft came up with them. The same goes for WoW’s LFG tool. There were folks who hated the cartoony aspects of the game. People complained as much about Puggers as they do in this game. With the Catacylsm expansion, the old timers quit en-masse, and the Pandaria expansion caused more people to leave. People even threaten to leave if the game didn’t become completely subscription free.

But Blizzard kept with their vision anyways. In the process they attracted more players to their base and (correct me if I’m wrong) they’ve got a stable 7.8 million subscribers.

I hope that Arena net will keep with their original vision for this game and quit trying to please every complainer that threatens to leave. The “vision” (as I like to call it) acts like a roadmap for the game, much in the same way that the Wyld Hunt does for the Sylvari PCs. (Yeah, I had to throw in a Gw2 reference). It requires alot of confidence to keep going despite criticism. It’s great to listen to fans. However, there are times that we have to be like George RR Martin and tell the fans, “While I appreciate the comments, it’s still my story. I need to finish it my way.”

I also hope that devs rebuild their courage soon. As a creator myself, I can definitely relate to what the staff go through. In my own life, I’ve gotten so much negative criticism for my work (animation & writing). I know what it’s like when the negative criticism wears one down and paralyzes one with fear. I wish I could be there to tell to tell the devs to take things day by day. (Maybe the devs will see this post? Maybe?)

GW2 has so much potential. It has a great mythos behind it, and that’s why people like me stick with this game. It can also bring people together that no other game in my experience ever has. AARM is the first guild I’ve been in for more than 3 months. That’s never happened to me in any other game (including WoW). I hope that the game fulfills its potential.

I think this would help to bring some life back onto the Orr-related maps (pun intended :p). Gameplay-wise, this area of the game needs more interesting mechanics so more gamers can be attracted to the area. It’s boring to go through the same “rushing forward and kill everything” scenario.

It basically sounds like this player wants to use their own “custom campaign rules” for RP. Nothing wrong with that, although I wouldn’t be able to RP with them if their custom rules basically went against the established canon lore. (The same way I couldn’t RP with someone who said they were a Sylvari Firstborn or who insisted that their Human was really a 500 year old Ascalonian Vampire.)

Well, there is the few unnamed Sylvari Firstborns… but I can agree with that.

:P. Reminds me of early GW2 days when somebody was talking about a demon-possessed character. I simply went “Yeah, that doesn’t happen in GW…”

There is such a thing as dragon possession tho. Just refer to Scarlet Briar’s situation. Her diary talked about her being possessed.

well good news and bad news… The good news is, the guy kicked me today as he or she blew up in one of his childish fits and he thought I’m always picking the large 1500 + multi-guild alliance Apocalyptic Armageddon [AARM] over him. The bad news is I have a continuity and RP vacuum now in my own story so now anything I did had planned with him (not sure it would end well anyways) is gone.

I still have to refer to him or her and their characters in my narrative and RP now even though it seems wrong (like every other group and guild that progressed me along my RP story. That I left for various petty immature crap).

Also I blocked him or her. It really started to grate on my nerves with the self-centered crap.

Retcon it. You never really were in that guild and don’t know anything about it.

Oh no… I’m so sorry to hear that.

I agree with Tobias. Just retcon the story. That’s what I do when people I’ve RPed with just abandon the storyline.

The only NPCs we care about is Taimi and Caithe. Why? They’re interesting, and they don’t take over the story. The rest have to be scrapped because they’re all doing the job of the PC. Rytlock’s and Rox’s struggles can easily become the struggles of the Charr PCs. Braham’s struggle to be a legendary norn is the storylines of the Norn PCs.

I disagree. The only NPC I cared about during the living story was Marjory for the longest time, and then Kasmeer when she started to get more back story. Caithe is alright, along with the other members of destiny’s edge, but I’m not invested in her at all.
Side note: Don’t speak for all the players about opinions like this because they’re not universal opinions.

I’m basing my comments about this on the various comments on this forum as well as the comments from players in-game. If you go back into the forum’s previous posts over the last 15 months, you’ll see a lot of people have made the same comments about the NPCs over and over again: Too one-dimensional, bland storylines, takes over for the PCs, Majory x Kasmeer relationship feeling exploitative, etc.

Alot of players don’t want to see a repeat of the disastrous LS Season 1.

Taimi is the character with the most positive comments since her introduction earlier this year. There are alot of pro-Taimi posts that are much easier to find. As for Caithe, she doesn’t cause the negative knee-jerk reaction that many of the other NPCs tend to cause. Plus, Caithe’s situation plays a big part of the Personal Story (see the story step “A Light in the Darkness” as well as the Sylvari PS storyline — her Wyld Hunt is to take down the dragons). Plus, alot of people want to know more about the secret that Scarlet claimed Caithe is carrying. *A lot of folks on these forums do want LS season 2 to focus more on the Personal Story again.

EDIT: If you want to find posts that talk about flaws in the Living Story NPCs, you can search the forums via Google. Go to Google and type the NPC’s name followed by the words “gw2 forum” (Example: Majory gw2 forum). With 2 novels to write and a WvW team that depends on me, my schedule isn’t allowing me a whole lot of time to go back to read the past posts so I can create links to them here. To make matters more complicated, some of the critical posts are mixed in threads that talk about the NPCs in a good light. I’ve been visiting the forums at least once a day for the last six months, so I’ve seen a lot of posts that are critical of the LS NPCs. My hope is that Anet will fix the characterization of the NPCs and get rid of characters that don’t move the story forward.

Next: Quit nerfing the Engineers!

Since I began the game six months ago. I’ve seen my main class (Engineer) get nerfed one too many time because others who don’t play the class claim that we’re overpowered. My class isn’t overpowered at all. In fact, my class has gotten weaker after every update and I’m having to reset traits every 2 weeks because my build stops having any effect on baddies in the dungeons and LS. Engies have guns, bombs, and machines. We’re supposed to be as powerful as the warriors and the guardians. We should get bonuses (esp WvW related bonuses) for building and repairing stuff. At the very least, Engies are supposed to be more powerful than the pet-lovng Rangers. Our range should be as great as the characters who fling arrows.

(BTW I don’t play warrior or guardians because all it requires is pressing 1 on the keyboard. Being an Engineer requires more skill in dodging and timing attacks. Plus I’m required to hit more buttons on the keyboard too.)

And finally: Quit listening to the folks who want GW2 to be Second Life

I’m a bit upset that you guys at Anet are listening a bit too much to the players who insist on playing a GW2 version of Second Life. NPCs have taken over the story because we got players who insist that we shouldn’t be the hero. Like I said in the first paragraph, this game was intended for players who want to play the dragon-slaying hero. There are other games on the market for folks who want to play ordinary characters who lead ordinary lives.

PHEW! That was a really long, long post! It took me all weekend to figure out what I wanted to say and write it all down!

I hope what I said helps you out, Anet. Good luck on making Living Story Season 2! Most of us are looking forward to what you guys come up with!

Who’s been the one really protecting the queen? The human PC. Which human character figured out where Scarlet was going to strike next? The human PC. Which human character helped to save LA? The human PC. The only humans we want to see caring for the queen and other stuff related to humanity are the human PCs.

The only romances we want to see are the romances involving the PC. :P

Censorship within Anet

I don’t believe it is fair to completely blame certain writers for the issues regarding the LS. It takes a group to create a game. Myself, creative professionals, and other gamers on this forum have suspected that there are way too many people with conflicting views who have a say in what goes into Living Story (writers, animators, programmers, lawyers, etc.). As the old saying goes, “Too many cooks spoil the stew.” Somewhere along the video game creation pipeline there are most likely folks who are hampering the production process because of their personal beliefs. Everyone must be on the same page when it comes to completing the vision for LS Season 2

I know some of the Anet staff obsess over the game’s Teen rating. If you’re not sure what should go into a teen video game, take some time to examine the games that are already on the market. You would be very surprised to find out what the ESRB has allowed into Teen games. I believe that the rating won’t be affected if the storyline gets more serious and darker. Just don’t forget the occasional bits of humor (like Quaggan and Skritt related stuff), so that the tension can be released.

Regarding Animation:

Animators: Please use the animated cut scenes to show off your animation skills. We players want to see amazing cut scenes involving the PCs and the bad guys, not just scenes showing buildings & ships. It’s good for your resumes, and it will make the audience happy! As always, there should always be a skip button for those players who don’t want to watch the stuff.

Temporary vs Permanent Content

The problem with temporary content is that it defeats Arena Net’s original vision for the Guild Wars franchise: To be the MMO for people who hate MMOs. You guys created a company with the idea of being different “other guys” (mainly Blizzard). Unfortunately the temporary content in LS creates the feeling of the same old MMOs that everyone has come to dread. It places too much pressure on the players to log in everyday and finish the achievements within 2 weeks. Some of your busier player base can’t log in during the week due to work or school. Plus, lack of permanent content keeps new players in the dark when it comes to the LS storyline. The new players have to be given a chance to play through the old stuff, so they can be more emotionally involved in the story.

Lastly, temporary content is bad for the developers’ resumes. When the devs decide to move on to other employers in the future, how are future employers going to see all the amazing stuff they made if it’s not available in GW2?

I’m a fan of the Living Story / Living World concept. I actually look forward to the updates every 2 weeks. PLEASE KEEP LS GOING!

The main storyline of this game says we’re the dragon hunters. Certain PS storylines (like the Sylvari PS) reinforce this concept. Let’s keep it that way. All those players who don’t want to be the protagonists can play Secret World and Second Life. *Millions of players bought GW2 to be the hero who kills dragons. That’s is what Anet advertised 2 years ago in this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xTTdYkOzzg
At the 4:12 mark in the video, it says “Now is the time… Claim your destiny! Forge your legend!” This trailer is why players like myself bought the game in the first place. *

Scrapping Scarlet was the best move EVER! Her death helped to progress the Sylvari PC’s Wyld Hunt, and she prepared the Dreamers for the dragon fights ahead of them. The words Scarlet said before she died indicated that Nightmare could be connected to Mordremoth. If we take out the plant dragon, we’ll destroy two baddies with one stone: The giant lizard and the Nightmare Court. IMO, Scarlet has gone from being annoying anarchist villainess to being the Obi Wan / Gandalf / messiah character of the series! That’s right. She stole the title of Tree Jesus (aka Tresus) title from Trahearne! (LOL!) Don’t’ let her death be in vain; Let us kill those dragons!

ANET: Keep with your original vision: Let us kill the dragons… in the same style as Tequatl or Twisted Marionette! We all love killing Teq & Shatterer every week. Marionette was a treat for most of us. We want to see many more dragon battles on the level of Tequatl, Twisted Marionette, or better.

No more stalling, Anet. Most of us are not here to watch Majory get it on with Kasmeer or become Trahearne’s personal servant. Those NPC generated events don’t contribute to the main storyline either. After what happened to Lion’s Arch, we want to turn Mordremoth (aka Exorcist dragon) into compost. Yeah, you can’t pull the wool over our eyes. It’s obvious who was controlling Ceara like a puppet for the last 15 months. It’s time for that b———- to go down once and for all.

While we’re at it, we want to avenge Glint’s death by hunting down Kralkatorrik. Jormag needs to be thawed out, and we’re more than happy to drown Bubbles.

Primordius is giving Tyria grief again? Bring him out here, so we can put him back in his place once more! We defeated him in Eye of the North, we players can defeat him again.

As for Zhaitan, we want a re-do. The final fight with this guy in the Arah dungeon was extremely pitiful. We want to see an open world Teq styled fight with this guy. This dragon is supposed to be undead, and it’s common knowledge that the undead don’t go down with necromancer hocus-pocus stuff. That’s been demonstrated time and time again in every zombie video game in existence. Sorry, but one needs holy power to permanently destroy the undead. He should be the hardest and final enemy we take down in this game. Why? The game’s story began with his forces encroaching on the lives of our heroes. Ending this game with Zhaitan’s final defeat will help the story come full circle and be the perfect closure to GW2. One possible way to defeat this guy: Our heroes could go through the Rite of Acension quests to take this dragon down. Again, I’m expecting the second battle with Zhaitan to be the final one.

I have a certain rp player that is the leader of a guild I’m in.

He has never really played gw 1 and only played gw 2 for so many months.

As much as I try to explain the lore and such to him he has this feeling that in RP, you can only play a human as humans have all their magic and professions given to them by the bloodstones and such which were made by the Forgotten and used further by the 6 gods making our schools of magic etc and the whole Abbadon fiasco of gw 1.

He thinks that playing a magical profession has no point as everything is so pro human and pro six gods even now in gw2.

I know this isn’t the case and I can’t really explain it to him as he is so against the fact everything was human only in gw 1 in essence.

Is the lore just that bad in gw 1 and 2? Or is there a way to make him feel good about playing a non-human?

Also mechanics and lore with professions? Anyway to explain it better as i know for a fact Professions are a lore thing not just a mechanics thing.

I would love Konig to be here to help.

My recommendation: When in doubt, quote from the official wiki.

This is how I see the human lore conflict…

1) GW1 was a human-only game. If I were in your shoes, I would suggest that the guild should schedule time to play the game as a group to study the past lore.

2) The lore from both GW1 & GW2 is valid. Alot of the changes in GW2 are due to characters making assumptions about things. As a writer, the rule I tend to go by is “if a character says it, it may or may not be true”. Remember that characters tend to share their knowledge & experience from their point of view. It seems to me that the humans in this game are living in the dark ages. The evidence? Divinity’s Reach. When humans obsess over religion, it tends to blind them to reality. Religion is part of the reason that the human race is dying in this game.

So much knowledge was lost during the last 250 years mostly due to social and political reasons (similar to the Dark Ages here on Earth). The more highly educated leaders use war & money to control people. Notice that the Centaur War never gets solved. The war keeps going and going while Queen Jennah lounges around on her fancy golden recliner. If there were no war, more & more average people would be questioning her rule (like the French did during Marie Antoinette’s time). Until Tyria goes through their version of the Age of Enlightenment, the human’s knowledge will continue to be incorrect and / or limited much of the time.

3) *When looking for what really happened in Tyria’s history, GW1 lore trumps GW2 lore. Why? The earlier events are what really happened! When RL historians and archaeologists study an ancient document like the Bible they always refer to the earlier source. Until science becomes more important in their society, GW2 humans will continue to have limited access to what really happened in their own past. Those limitations will cause history to repeat itself over and over again.

Now onto the bloodstones…

The bloodstones were not created by the Forgotten. They were created by the Six Gods themselves. See http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Bloodstone

The role of the Forgotten in GW1 were to conduct the Ascension ritual, which gave the heroes the ability to fight the final boss in the game. I personally believe that the Forgotten aren’t acknowledged in GW2 human history because they look too much like the infamous krait. (BTW, There is a Charr character in the Durmand Priory hallway that acknowledges that history has been tampered with)

As for magic, you can refer your guild leader to the long explanation in GW2’s wiki: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Magic

Regarding your Guild Leader…

It sounds as if the guild leader is making up his own version of the lore. It also seems as if it doesn’t work with your character’s storyline. There is a good chance you might have to let the situation go and join another guild.

I see many people want their character to be the Hero of Tyria, and have statues on the behalf even when they know the players next to them are also Commanders of the Pact.

I also see many people who are more into story details that would rather be someone of help but not THE commander. To be a compannion of help to Destiny’s Orphans and yet not to be a MEMBER of it.

How could we get this resolved?

*I believe this is due to a culture clash. In some cultures, people are taught to be leaders and individuals (like Americans). In other cultures, people are taught to follow the crowd for the sake of the community’s goals (like people from Japan).

Due to the situation with the LS, the most important thing we can do for the game’s storyline is make the PC the center of attention. If a person doesn’t want their character to be the focus of the PS / LS, then they can avoid playing those parts of the game. That’s what alot of heavy RPers do. Most Heavy RPers are folks who want to play the ordinary people or followers (merchants, nobles, servants, etc). Heavy RPers are in the minority on GW2’s NA Roleplay server, Tarnished Coast. Majority of OOC players I’ve spoken to want to play the hero.

New writers. And, preferably, writers who have played Guild Wars 1 on more than a passing occasion.

Sign me up! I’ve played GW1 since 2006, so I know the lore well. I would love to make new LS stories, and I’m not afraid of writing for the Teen market either.

If I were a writer for this game, I would re-focus the story on the PC. IMO, NPCs shouldn’t be getting the spotlight. NPCs also need to be more endearing so we actually care about them (i.e. Taimi).

Then there’s the much-needed cutscenes involving the baddies. I would include those in the LS. Players need to see what the baddies are up to while their characters are being kept in the dark (most of the time).

I would also add more stories involving the Orders. The 3 different organizations have alot of potential for drama.

Those 3 options to choose from just show how childish and silly the writer is. They show that my character is actually no better than Scarlet when killing someone.
- I finally understood the meaning of “kuh-Braham!”?
- Not as sweet as a kiss. (wink)?

Wth is this? Seriously, they employed a child to write these? Or a psycho?
We are the good guys here, we should mourn those who died or at least not comment on those whom we killed. Why not behaving maturely and give options like:
- It was really satisfying.
- It was not as rewarding as I though it would be.
- Let’s focus on the living instead.

Sometimes I got a feeling that this game should come with PEGI 2 rofl.

I don’t know about you, but the choices Anet gave us were more interesting. Those words had more life and punch to them . And I loved the idea of my Sylvari flirting with Majory. The one idea I will agree with you on is the last option you invented. I do wish that the words,“Let’s focus on the living instead” should of been an option.

This game isn’t supposed to be serious like Skyrim.

Fun idea for Sylvari players out there

There is one person on the Tarnished Coast server who has made and RPed a Scarlet Briar PC who kinda-sorta looks like the NPC. That person usually plays in WvW.

If I ever get a pic, I’ll post it here.

Sylvary/Engineer after GW1

Hello,

I am new to gw lore. Gw2 is the first game I played and wanted to know if engineer and sylvari are the new things added from gw1. I read guardians came from paladins or something from elona and the rest were the same.

Wanted to make a combination of the newest class and race tht didnt exist in gw1 so was thinking if sylvari engineer was the one.

Thank You.

Welcome to the ranks, Soldier!

Yes, Engineers (aka Engies) and Sylvari (aka Salads) are new to the GW universe. There’s alot of lore about these two groups. Be sure to read the wiki and play through the Personal Story (PS) in your spare time. My main is a Sylvari Engie, so I can definitely say that they’re alot of fun to play.

Some tips:

— Just be sure to practice your dodging skills and timing when to use elixirs.

— Make use of food buffs and potion buffs.

— Engies can self-revive and revive other using Elixir R. When your HP drops to a very low level, use the elixir and the character should revive when it goes down. You can also toss an Elixir R onto dying PC allies and it will revive them. This takes alot of practice so be patient if you don’t get it the first time.

— If you decided to use Grenades as your Engie’s main weapon, consider investing in a Gaming mouse (the kind that has extra numbered buttons on the side). It will make using Grenades alot easier.

If you’re on the Tarnished Coast server, you’ll sometimes hear me on the TC Mumble chat (esp. the Eternal Battlegrounds channel).

Again, Welcome to GW2! Enjoy your stay!

Sincerely,

Kta

I know its so dead that even the npc are no longer in LA! (I hope this is a joke post or your really out of the loop of things.)

Nope, he’s not dreaming it up! I"m a freelance PS/LS Roleplayer (RPer) & Semi-hardcore WvW / Dungeon / Fractal gamer. I’m seeing the same thing as the OP. I’ve been logging in everyday during different times of the day, and there isn’t any of the usual RP action that floods SAY chat, MAP chat, and ME chat. On the Tarnished Coast server, LA has been dead for the last several days (It was heavily populated for 3 days after the update). Myself and other players thought that RPers were going to take over the city, but I guess they didn’t.

DR is unusually quiet as well. DR is usually flooded with RP chat during the day and evenings (NA Server Time), and the chat is going so fast that I have to click the chat box to read the messages.

Even the Grove is unusually quiet. I’ve only seen 2 Sylvari RPers in there a few days ago, but that was late in the evening. I usually see Sylvari RP during the evening hours (NA Server Time).

To make things really creepy, the TC Queensdale Champ Train hasn’t been seen either.

Luckily we still have the semi-hardcore and hardcore guilds practicing for the new WvW season and PvP tourny (such as AARM, CERN, PINK, and ESP). There’s been tons of action on Eternal Battlegrounds and Edge of the Mists. The TC Eternal Battlegrounds Mumble chat has been busy everyday since the update. There also has been alot of folks from these groups running Dungeons and Fractals to get the ascended and legendary stuff in time for the competitions.

racism in chat OK?

Hi,

I was in a solo arena match a few minutes ago and someone was typing in some oriental language. Another player then told the person to stop and called them a (only using the words as a reference from the chat) “rice picker.” They said this to the person twice during our short match.

I reported that player for taking his own issues with not being able to accept a different race or culture into the game. I also kindly told him(or her) I reported him(or her). Their reply was lololol I’ve never been banned for that. (not exact words )

So my question is, does Anet not care about racism? Will anything happen to this person or was he right to laugh at me for reporting because it’s a waste of time?

I’ve caught this too in Fractals. Racism in a game is never okay, and it violates the TOS.

In cases like this always right click on the name and select “Report”. Then let Anet take care of the rest. If that person’s name-calling really bothers you, then add that players name to your block list. That’s what I do when I see people use the N word. When you block a player, you can no longer see their messages.
